Lighting is usually the forgotten area in any home interior design scheme, but it clearly needs to be one of the most important. Without good quality light, appropriate for the setting and fitting in the overall scheme, a room would look, well. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . dark! The humble Christmas Tree is a great example of lighting making something fairly pedestrian look well rather magical! So don’t just think about beautiful lighting around your home at Christmas. Lights are for life, not just for Christmas!

The first place your visitors see in your home, start with outside and continue the feel into your hallway: • Ensure the pathway and entrance to your doorway is clutter free and well-lit to accommodate the safe carrying of all of those presents! We love the Quincy outdoor wall light pictured in the large picture left) • Have that all important Christmas wreath on the front door, few things say Christmas more, just don’t attach it to the door knocker and have the wind suggest that you have visitors when you don’t!

• Keep the hallway nice and tidy with any unnecessary coats and shoes tidied away • Add a welcoming festive doormat • Have some tinsel, decorations and perhaps some LED candles in your Hallway (pictured above). It is the first impression of your home and you want to give that festive flavour. • Keep the hallway bright and light with some well placed table lamps like the beautiful traditional lantern style like CARGO table lamp (right) WWW.

MAKE YOUR SPARE ROOM SPECIAL • Clear all the junk out that you have been keeping in there telling yourself you will sell it at the next car boot sale • Give the room a quick makeover with an easy fit pendant like the pretty Secret Garden (shown left) • Don’t forget to ensure you have a mirror in the room, so many spare rooms lack a mirror for getting ready for the day • Add a Christmas star light as a soft table light or gentle night light • Hang a personalised Christmas Decoration in the room, no need to make it into Santa’s Grotto but a Gingerbread Man or Star with your guests initials applied or a welcome message can be a lovely touch • Leave some bottled water and a couple of glasses, after the festivities your guests may need to hydrate!
LITTLE FESTIVE FINISHING TOUCHES • Consider using a theme that runs in the decoration throughout the home. It may be a colour of tinsel running throughout, or perhaps some little decorations scatter through various parts of your home • Use artificial snow spray - despite the fact that it rarely snows on Christmas Day, we all associate it with snowy scenes straight from a snow globe. It can instantly transform your windows and doors • Put together a Christmas picture. You don’t need to be an artist - simply draw a bare stick tree with branches and write the names of all of your guests on a heart. Cut out the hearts and stick them at the end of the branches!
WE ALL KNOW YOU CAN GET A BIT BORED AFTER ALL THE FESTIVITIES - WHY NOT TRY THIS: • Play our new festive game: Fortune 8! A mash up of the Chinese tradition of fortune cookies and after eight mints (other dinner mints are available!). Add little slips of paper with a mix of jobs to do around the house, treats and fun games e.g. Load the dishwasher, sing Jingle Bells, a quick charades game or perhaps ask all of your guests to write a fun game or activity down as they walk in. Perfect to keep the everyone amused on Boxing Day! You get a free mint too!
