How can I buy something when I don’t know the newlyweds style or home? • Opt for something neutral • A table or floor lamp is a perfect addition to any home to add some task or ambient light to a room • Stay away from distinct patterns unless you know the newlyweds style really well Sometimes the perfect gift can help generate some inspiration in a new home to base a new styling around! If all else fails you can always opt for the convenience and flexibility of a Lighting Company gift voucher, that way your newlyweds can set up home with exactly the lighting they want for their new love nest together!
100% WISE

OUT OF THE SHADE E
llie D, our Lighting Geek, will help you to find the right shade for your light.
First things first. It’s all about that base! MEASURE UP. Whilst most of us work in metric these days, shades are still measured in inches. Shade measurements usually show the height and the diameter (the distance across the bottom of the shade not the top). To give a balanced look, a good general rule of thumb is that your shade diameter should be similar to the height of your lamp base (excluding the lamp holder). You can go for a slightly smaller shade if your space is limited and if your lamp base is unusually tall or very slim you may need to adjust the size of the shade. WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO USE IT? To achieve a more cohesive look consider mirroring the shape of your lamp and shade with the coffee table, console table or side table it will sit on. Mixing it up a bit can work too if you select a shade that matches your table shape and team it with a contrasting base. WHAT IS IT’S PURPOSE? Are you looking for a soft ambient light, something more dramatic, or do you want a reading lamp or task light? A translucent shade will give you more light and be better for reading and other tasks whilst still giving you a softer ambient light. Darker opaque shades will give a more dramatic effect to your lighting design.

We can make silk shades in almost any colour or with a fabric of your choice, although most people choose one of the many “off the shelf” versions as they are most cost effective”. Most people opt for the neutral colours as they allow more light into the room.
DON’T JUDGE A SHADE BY IT’S COVER The lining of your shade can have a huge effect on the colour and intensity of the light so don’t ignore the inside of the shade. A white or silver lining will boost the amount of reflective light whereas darker colours absorb the light. Gold linings create warmer lighting effects. SWITCH ON TO THE DETAILS Switches can be found in lots of different places on table lamps – floor switches, in-line switches on the cable and bar switches below the bulb. Make sure when you choose your shade that you can still access the switch without needing to go to a yoga class! IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT TABLE AND FLOOR SHADES It’s not just about the table and floor lamps. A pendant shade with a diffuser or baffle can hide unsightly bulbs as well as softening and diffusing the light. Candle clip-on shades work great on wall lights and chandeliers and can also provide a quick a cost effective change of look.

SUPER SPARE GIVE SOME LOVE TO YOUR SPARE ROOM
For many of us the spare room is a forgotten part of the home. A place to dump your junk, hide the ironing until you really do need to get it done and only ever tidied up when you have to because someone is coming to stay, but it doesn’t need to be like this. A lovely room in which to engage in your favourite hobby, a place to find solace in a good book as well as a loved room for your special guests, especially if they like to turn up unannounced as many of mine do! Make room for a comfy spare chair, a clean and bright decor and a few special touches to make your room feel less of a spare part and more part of your home. A few scatter cushions, a couple of nice prints hung on the wall and a nice light can make any room, let alone your spare! On the next page we have a few suggestions for great lights that don’t have to cost the earth but add a touch of class to your guest’s place in your home.

Fools Rush In? When we are looking at decorating and furnishing our new home, we worry about the sofa, the latest OLED TV, the curtains, even the cushions but the lighting frequently gets overlooked. Next make sure the lighting allows for any activities or tasks that take place in the room. For instance you will need to have access to a socket to power a desk lamp or floor reading light. 4. Indicate where you want areas of light to be and consider what type of light fittings you want in each area. Do you need an up lighter to bounce the light from the ceiling and or walls, or do you need the lights facing down for more direct light? Consider choosing downward facing pendants with a diffuser as this hides unsightly bulbs from view and eliminates any glare without too much loss of light.

t is a legal requirement that public buildings must have safety systems and lighting in place to allow occupants to exit safely in the event of any incident. Emergency lighting must operate in industrial, commercial and retail premises in the event of a failure to the mains power supply.
The corridor above would benefit from our range of decorative emergency lights “Whilst most of us understand the need for emergency lighting, we would cater for the small number of designers and clients who would prefer not to use ugly lighting” said Lynne Hickin-Browne director of Bespoke Lights.
Emergency light fittings have always tended to be functional and utilitarian rather than decorative and, whilst we can supply a full selection of such light fittings, we have long believed there is no reason why emergency lights cannot be attractive too! Decorative rather than utilitarian emergency lighting would be welcomed by many hotels and restaurants who are searching for stylish emergency lighting more in keeping with their interior décor. The wait is over decorative emergency lighting is now possible through our Bespoke Lights division. We have been working with our manufacturing partners to produce a selection of more attractive emergency light fittings and you will find a selection of ceiling lights in our on-line shop that can be converted to emergency light fittings on request. We can also convert some of our Tiffany wall lights into emergency light fittings ideal for corridors and stairwell lighting.
“In a luxury hotel for example, hoteliers can use decorative quality lighting every day with the confidence it can perform the emergency function when and if it is needed”. The Metropolitan Art Deco range of lights features a converted wall light that incorporates a 3 hour battery back-up, allowing it to be use as a maintained emergency light fitting. Conversions cost around £150.00 extra and for this there is some fabrication work and hi tech led lights and battery packs added. Whilst this work is costly, the LED units are extremely low energy and can work out to be a good investment buy. Rather than having an additional light/s installed as a dedicated emergency light some of the decorative lights can be dual purpose. To view the entire metropolitan range visit Bespoke Lights today. Please note: Emergency Conversions may alter the depth of wall lights as battery packs are fitted in a fabricated back plate.

Deco DECADENCE A
delightfully decadent trend: sees a luxury take on the stylish 1920’s Art Deco era. The Art Deco style has remained untouched for decades, which is a shame as the style was originally based on modernity.
All about modern in its time . . . now it returns with a bang and a bling, it’s all about the gold, decadent look
Adding a few Deco style cushions can quickly update an older style sofa if the budget will not permit a new one.
This super, elegant and decadent style is perfect for ‘posh’ luxurious homes and for hospitality lighting too. The Art Deco look has been embraced by the rich and famous – Cameron Diaz recently decorated her New York City penthouse apartment with Deco style elements. Although it’s all about out and out luxury, it’s simple to accomplish and surprisingly affordable too. Just add a few well chosen stylish pieces and you’ll have a luxury setting to be proud of. The basic elements remain true to the original Deco style, with simple linear designs and strong geometric shapes, but here’s the fun part!
If you have a 3 piece suite and you have a large enough room, try sitting the chairs side by side or opposite each other to create symmetrical shapes. This is such a simple yet effective look to pull off. Small scale grid patterns and trellis designs help to keep the look fresh and on-trend. Gold tubular frame bookcases and sleek coffee tables with an open trellis pattern are great choices. Mirrors with geometric shaped glass or frames are a great fit if you have the room to accommodate them. Try to keep walls fairly IMAGE COURTESY OF WITHINHOME.COM neutral. Wallpaper is brilliant for adding a subtle Deco feel providing you stick to natural Ramp up the shine, go glam, accessorise and it background colours like taupe or pale grey must be gold! with maybe a simple symmetrical pattern or a few touches The style of the Art Deco era has an of gold or everlasting appeal yet the colder colour black. pallet seems a little much for today’s modern homes. Deco-Decadence, the updated version We just love of the style, sees less of the iconic symbolism. this modern, Today you’ll see gold highlights and intricate repeat patterns mixed with warmer toned colours like emerald green, electric blue, earthy reds and the like. The look is all about contrasting trellis patterns and gold highlights. Try to keep accessories as simple as possible. DecoDecadence is such a smart look with straight clean lines and symmetrical shapes. Tubular shaped gold accessories and balanced light fittings will enhance this contemporary look. Simply designed furniture works well. If you already have a modern sofa in reasonable condition the good news is that it is likely to work well with this style - uncomplicated square and rectangular shapes are just perfect.
re-invented, decadent look and can see it being readily adopted by the contract and hospitality lighting markets. It is also a stunning stylish look for modern luxurious homes too.

MIXED materials make magic moods
M
ixing your materials is all about adding a surprise element or contrast to your interior. Creative designs add something unusual to capture the imagination. Think of taking the rough with the smooth. Mix rough textures such as wood (especially unfinished wood), shaggy rugs and throws, concrete and exposed brickwork with smooth finishes such as glass, ceramic tiles, metals and leather. This season it’s all about breaking those long held interior design “rules”. Yes, rip up that rule book! Don’t be worried by this as art and nature are no strangers to this concept. If it works in nature and is used by artists it will certainly work for you too.
ROWAN PENDANTS FROM THE COPENHAGEN RANGE
FUTURA PENDANTS FROM THE COPENHAGEN RANGE
LUTE PENDANTS FROM THE COPENHAGEN RANGE
NATURE’S MIXED MATERIALS Think of the contrast in a beach scene with its clear blue sky, sandy beach, gnarled driftwood, pebbles smoothed by years of rolling tides and dark seaweed strewn about.
Klimt uses an eclectic mix of styles from Art Nouveaux to Arts and Crafts. The metallic background using gold leaf and the oil painted flowers, geometric shapes and human forms. form a lovely contrast.
ART’S MIXED MATERIALS In art, mixing collages with paints, shapes and textures is the norm.
So be brave, throw out the rule book and mix it up in your home, you might be pleasantly surprised at some of the results. Our range of featured lighting shows mixed materials being used to their greatest effect. Smoked glass with copper, rustic wood with wrought iron, leather mixed with metal, silk and modern wood with metallic finishes.
The Kiss (shown above) by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt is a wonderful example.
The Copenhagen range of artisan manufactured lights mixes beautiful translucent coloured glass in shades of topaz, blue, bright coral, grey and forest green with warm detailing in gold, copper and platinum to create an amazing look. There is so much to choose from and more subtle than you first thought!
