We are sure you probably won’t have to look far in your home to find some wooden items, be it a book case, set of drawers or simply your doors. In 2016 we will see a focus on wood of all shades as it becomes an increasingly popular interior trend, so consider incorporating this into your design. The great thing about wood as a material is not just the amount of finishes it comes in, but the way it can seamlessly enhance any modern or traditional setting. It is beautifully tactile and homely, perfectly easy to clean and provides a warm naturalistic and fresh vibe. In the interior design world there is always a quest for something new and different. Whilst designers search for practical stylish materials to use in our homes, few materials have stood the test of time in the same way as wood. Wood has been used for centuries for building our homes, for flooring and for decorative items too.

Throughout the ages we keep returning to the natural beauty and warmth of wood. It seems wood can never fall out of favour; it just gets reinvented. Lighter coloured bleached wood has a modern vibe perfect for urban living with its pared back Scandinavian or beach house look. Darker woods have a homelier more traditional feel that works particularly well in period homes, dining rooms, pubs, bars and restaurants.

look immediately seems more solid and considered. Co-ordinating wooden ceiling lights with a wooden floor will balance the room to give a more cohesive, balanced look. The increasing amounts of technology in our homes results in smooth shiny surfaces that are often cold and clinical. We can soften this look by adding some natural materials to restore the harmony – perhaps we all feel the need to re-connect with nature. The latest trend for all things wooden now means there are plenty of light fittings incorporating wood or faux wood details. Using more wood in our interiors has brought a whole raft of innovative new lighting designs and we are delighted to share them with you. PERFECT IMPERFECTIONS
Non perfect finishes bring a depth and hold a distinctive character that brings a sense of experience Some call them imperfections, others call them quirks. One thing we can all agree on is that these little oddities define the object as your own . In other words, what makes you, you?
A few additions and repairs will have you well on your way. Some people see this trend as a revival of the arts and crafts, a rebellion against machined production and an appreciation for more human and crafted work.
Tarnished finishes which give a look of aging surface detail is going to be getting more appreciation in 2016 as the perfect imperfections trend takes hold.
As things have become far more reliant on technology there has been an increase in desire for those special products that have not been mass produced on a production line. And you can see why when frayed edges, patchwork and faded patterns are great examples of perfect imperfections.
These crafted finishes hold a distinctive character and sense of experience. That’s what makes them so...Perfect! You get the feel of something that’s hand finished and with it, all the care and devotion that went into it. You know it’s unique and not something from the mass produced conveyor belt. A good example of how we’ve moved on from the requirement of perfection is an old favourite; denim jeans. There was once a time where the crispest and bluest jeans were the desired look, nowadays you see jeans with faded colour patches and even faux or real rips in them giving This trend is now similarly becoming them added appeal. sought after in our homes too. Visiting historic homes and seeing how once This is because we long to be unique, be vibrant rooms have faded and got the ourselves and have character. “lived with and loved” look has a sense of class which we now find ourselves striving to replicate.
Team some beautiful handcrafted items such as a patchwork rug or throw, along with ceramics and wooden accessories. This will create a scene of quality but be careful not to add too many items as you may end up with a cluttered look. It’s important not to break the look so opting for suitable lighting is important, there are plenty of hand finished products with beautifully tarnished finishes to choose from. Take inspiration from the industrial trend and use brushed or aged metal finishes which will help to you to blend a mix of styles that showcase the perfect imperfections.
How can you get this style to grace your home?

Metals don’t need to make a room feel cold, the warm tones of bronze and copper are great options for both living rooms and bedrooms. They can also create a marvellous contrast to faded and washed out patterns.
The choice between genuinely hand made products or replica products comes down to personal choice and of course, budget.
If you can stretch to a handmade product the quality is well worth the investment but if this is not an option there are lots of machine made products which are often hand finished to achieve very similar Should you decide to go for the effects. colder colour metals consider pairing them with warmer toned patchwork accessories such as rugs, pillows or quilts.

TRANQUIL Let your look be inspired by the depths of the worlds oceans and its rich tapestry of colours
DEEP
We’d suggest using a strong hint of a contrasting deep rich sapphire blue for added impact.
The Lighting Company have added some new silk shade options especially designed for the contract markets. They include 3 new blue tones: “Delph Blue 79” a mid blue which teams well with many colours, the bold “Peacock 92” that’s almost a shimmery turquoise and the aforementioned “Sapphire Blue 80”. This is a deep royal Sapphire that adds confident rich accents to a design. Sand, sea and sublime subtlety. Dive into the depths for inspiration. Sea sediment, coral, sea shells and pale blended shades of blue, green and turquoise help transport us to paradise. Who could fail to be seduced by the soft and delicate mix of sandy textures and pearlescent finishes that we see ebbing and flowing into interior design?
Where does the trend come from? I guess it’s the same thing that collectively draws us to the sea. The sheer mystery and longing for some peace and tranquillity. In today’s frantic world with a barrage of beeps and buzzes from the latest email or funny picture on Facebook we yearn for the peace of the tranquil deep.
Interestingly this “being connected” sees many people looking for experiences The calm tranquillity of this trend sits well and novelties rather than looking to own in bedrooms and bathrooms although it is multiple possessions. also a great luxury look for living rooms too. It was wonderful, being so high I felt away from the hustle and bustle below and found myself wanting to look up. The amazing thing is I should have been inspired to look at the sights below. Instead I was compelled to look up into infinite space where I felt closer to nature. More connected! The good news is creating a calm space within your home is fairly inexpensive. If you’re using wallpaper opt for something with a washed out colour that adds to the tranquillity – and of course a big must is great lighting. The lighting should give a feeling of space so go for lighting that adds to the feel of the room. here is nothing better in the hospitality industry than telling the story of your buildings’ history. With so many hotels looking and feeling just the same, it’s great to find quirky yet beautiful surroundings in which to spend a few days away. There are few places that embody this spirit more than the Ink Hotel in Amsterdam, part of Accor Hotels ‘‘M’’ Gallery collection. Prior to being a luxury hotel and retreat in the heart of vibrant Amsterdam, the building was home to the Dutch newspaper ‘De Tijd’. This building was a place where stories were conceived, written and ultimately brought to life in print. INK. Hotel Amsterdam is a bohemian lifestyle hotel, where the traditional rules of hospitality are freely translated to the modern day, rewriting the definition of ‘luxury’ in ink. INK. Hotel Amsterdam offers its guests the ultimate luxury; the luxury of the freedom of time. We particularly love the typeset themed reception area, the splashes of inky blue throughout the hotel and the little touches that remind you of the history of the building. How could you bring out the history of your building or company in your hospitality setting? Food for thought! * All images courtesy of INK Hotel Amsterdam

hen looking for a fresh contemporary look for their all new restaurant and bar at Marcello’s and Bar 59 in Glasgow, the owners looked to The Lighting Company for some great lighting. Using the same attention to detail that is shown in their fine Italian restaurant regarding ingredient selection, the interior design and lighting had to be just right to create the relaxed and informal atmosphere for the Elmbank Street venue.

INSTALLED Mastering the beast that is social sharing has become part of the remit for most front of house staff within the hospitality industry today.
For the world of hospitality, this has meant some fast changes in the spread of a good or bad review. Not just the preserve of the pompous restaurant critic or hotel inspector, but as consumers we can all make our views known to a large potential audience.
Outlets (pubs, bars, hotels, restaurants etc.) must offer us rich content, great interiors to photograph and relaxed social ambience if they are to be considered worthy of our timeline.
When looking for a hotel to stay in or restaurant to eat out in, customers want to know more about the brand story before they spend their money on a hotel stay or meal out. They want to know how it will feel, how you will put them at ease and whether other consumers have enjoyed the experience. Knowing what the restaurant or hotel looks like, your location and review score helps the customer come to an informed decision on where to spend their money.
Facilitating this connectivity is just the start of it.
As ‘consumers’ we crave more experiences and many more photo opportunities. Hospitality locations must be good at what they do, but also they have to be ‘eye candy’. Being visually appealing gets them posted on social sharing sites. All this can create a buzz and this can be great for business.
We are all so adept at reading between the lines now that seemly polite wellmeaning comments say more than you may wish. If ever you’ve read ‘the hotel was looking a bit tired but clean” everyone knows that’s not good. It’s time the hotelier needs to invest and get an updated look sooner rather than later. Anyone planning a fresh new look needs to be ahead of the game. Larger businesses have design teams at their disposal and the challenge for them is to find engaging interior designs that meet the brands criteria. For small business owners finding the time for all these social and interior design matters can be next to impossible; owners can be everything from the chef, cleaners, maintenance and marketing departments!
WWW.
All of this is important and there’s an accessible source of reviews to connect with! Having an all important free Wi-Fi connection is also a consideration. One of the first things we do when staying away from home is checking that our devices are still connected. Having connectivity keeps us close to family, loved ones and our extended social groups. We feel more assured if we have a social group close at hand to keep us occupied. Hospitality sectors have adapted to facilitate phone and tablet connectivity. We need that phone, it goes with us everywhere, we may need to share with the world everything we are doing, even what we are having to eat!
The Light
Like it or not, we live in a brave new world full of Social Media. Some think this makes us more connected, although when I see couples out for a romantic meal sitting opposite one another not talking but head down buried in their phone, I’m not so sure!
The style savvy establishments are gaining market share thanks to guests sharing but this means they’ll need to change the decor a little more often if they’re to continue to be content worthy of social sharing sites.

INHome If you’re about to embark on a bathroom re-style this may well be the article for you, we’ll give you style notes and tips to creating the perfect period bathroom. Your bathroom will have you flushed with success! We’ll look back at key style elements of the past, and assist with some of the tricky period property dilemmas. There’s often confusion about what is a period bathroom. Indoor bathrooms are a relatively new invention as it was not until after World War One that indoor toilets became common place. If your home was built before that, there probably wasn’t a indoor bathroom. So anything that’s there now is not true to period. If you have an older home you may wish to have a period style bathroom, whilst maintaining modern convenience and luxury. (Or not such good old days as you’d most likely be sharing your throne with the neighbours.) As late as the 1890’s it wasn’t deemed a requirement for working class homes to have an indoor toilet. Whilst the wealthy at this time may have had indoor toilets, servants still used toilets built in outhouses. Toilets and baths have not always been in the same room and if you have only one bathroom, there will no doubt have been times when you feel this could be great idea. It’s common for the bathroom to be a dedicated room to pamper and indulge in some quiet time. I’ll go further to say we are looking at the bathroom as a sanctuary. Away from the stresses of life we want to soak our troubles away and make this space a little more luxurious and a whole lot more private!
Lighting your Period Bathroom
It is certainly worth investing time, energy and money into a bathroom. Renovating bathrooms and kitchens is a major investment but more than any other, these two rooms are said to help sell your property if done well. Today we are fortunate to be able to recreate period lighting that has all the benefits of modern technology yet still retains the character and feel of times past. So whatever the age of your home you will be able to find bathroom lighting that is not only sympathetic but also complies with the latest safety regulations The Victorian period started in 1837 and continued until 1901. To recreate the feel of a Victorian Bathroom, think dark mahogany and cherry woods, deep reds and greens teamed with brass. Victorian style was a little more ornate than you may think and Victorian bathrooms would typically have had free standing roll top baths with their characteristic ball and claw feet. Lighting in Victorian bathrooms would, however, have been a bit a little bit more functional and basic. Electric lighting was only in its infancy at the end of Victoria’s reign so there was little opportunity for Victorians to add decorative lighting in their bathrooms. Today we can show off a bit more by opting for chandelier above the bath tub – we feel sure they would have approved! If it looks right and feels right, then it is right! The Edwardian era came next, a short period from 1901 to 1911. The changes between Victorian and Edwardian era were very slight. Some say there was a slightly more masculine look to the architecture and a pared back simpler feel to the interiors.
The Edwardian period heralded the advancement of a more modern age. New developments, such as the motor car and telephone, that we take for granted today were introduced for the first time. The Arts and Crafts style spanned from 1890 to 1910 and alongside this, a more continental style. ‘Art Nouveau’ heavily influenced the fashion in the Edwardian times. A fashionable bathroom of the day may have had floral motifs, stylised scrolls and simpler embellishments within the room. Lighting began to be more decorative. George V was now on the throne and we were entering the Art Deco period which was at its height during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Georgian rooms often featured large crystal chandeliers and these too, may be suitable for a bathroom in homes where Art Deco simply is not to your taste. For those who have homes that pre-date the Victorian, Edwardian or Georgian times, you have possibly struggled to find bathroom light fittings that are in keeping with the age of your home. Aside from candles we have some great ideas for you too.

Edwardian
If your home is Medieval consider a bathroom style that is sympathetic to this period. Roll top baths and high wall hung cisterns seem to fit well with the character of older homes. A useful tip is to consider using exterior lights in Medieval style bathrooms – the black and dark metals used in many garden lights can work extremely well in period bathrooms. These lights are sealed and protected against the elements and are manufactured with the same safety specifications applicable to bathroom lighting.

BRITISH POST-MODERN STYLE Post 2nd World War Britain saw a significant rebuilding programme reinstating housing and public buildings that had been destroyed as a casualty of war. With the country on the brink of bankruptcy there were significant austerity measures imposed on the public purse, the times were brutally tough. Housing was in short supply and with monies low radical measures needed to take place. The birth rate was rising and a quick solution was required to re-home many of our returning heroes and their young families. To help, inventive new building measures were established. New homes would be built in sections using prefabricated parts manufactured in factories which were finally assembled on the building sites. These houses were quick to erect but were only planned as a temporary solution, however many of these properties remain in place today! The concept of this type of construction was sound but some of the materials were untested and in hindsight not suitable whilst other materials are still used today and have remained durable and sturdy enough to stand the test of time. Homes built after the war seemed to be brutally modern, designed with speed of construction in mind. Think of the much maligned high rise flats and prefab houses. These modern styles were a far cry from the gothic and Victorian elaborate styles of the past, when times were less austere. We don’t often look back with any degree of fondness for these historic, yet ‘modern’ styled homes. European architects tended to favour this fresh modern approach, whilst their British counterparts were reputed to be a bit ‘sniffy. This is a real shame as there were some monumental strides made in the design of houses at this time. Some of these ‘modern’ homes that were erected in the mid 20th century have become rather sought after and sit very well with the current trend for modern retro. Lots of bungalows were open plan and fitted with modular blocky furniture, a style that is much favoured today for family living. The Utopian idea of high rise living where communities would live together was idealistic and maybe a little ahead of its time. Today’s concepts for home building are similarly idealistic as we move again towards community living with new housing incorporating a mix of social and private housing with local facilities and amenities nearby.

The prolific postwar house building programme saw the development of ‘new towns’ which were introduced in 3 separate waves starting in 1947 and continuing up to the 1970’s. The first of these to be designed was Stevenage, closely followed by Basildon, Harlow and Bracknell with many more to follow. Criticised for lacking character at the time, these ‘new’ homes now have a modern retro look that sits perfectly with today’s fashion for anything retro.
This style of home be it a flat, bungalow, duplex or terrace house can be a great buy for families of today. Some ‘unmodernised’ modern homes can be easily updated and represent great value in the housing market.
There are still some bargains to be had but these homes are fast growing in popularity.

Here at The Lighting Company you will find bags of stylish mid-century lighting for homes built in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond.
WWW.
The 30’s lighting styles had a simplistic look and were often tubular in construction using stainless steel and opal glass to great effect. Glass globe pendants and school house style lights would also have been typical of this period. The 40’s style saw a move towards brighter funky coloured lights often in painted or enamelled finishes. In the 50’s we begin to see the influence of Italian and Scandinavian designers. Paul Henningsen’s iconic artichoke lamp dating from 1958, George Nelson’s classic bubble lamps, gooseneck floor lamps and hour glass shaped shades with metallic detailing are all classic examples.

Other lights that look stunning in post war homes include Bauhaus spotlights, geometric Deco style light fittings and the clean lines and simplicity of modern Scandinavian lighting. Above all keep things simple - use pendant lights in pale wood or enamel and team with great task lights and, if the budget will allow, add some mid-century statement pieces of furniture.

Technology allows us to watch tv, browse the web, listen to music or work anywhere we go with a tablet or laptop, so the traditional boundaries of what each room in our home is used for is being systematically disbanded. In our kitchen, long gone are the days of an ugly fluorescent strip light that was somehow supposed to light a whole kitchen! When designing or renovating a kitchen, using controllable layers of light that can serve a variety of purposes will transform the space from one use to the other. Hanging pendants can create visual interest and also serve to lower your eye line from high ceilings. When paired with a dimmer switch, they can help create a more intimate dining experience or perhaps useful task lighting for a workspace on a kitchen island. Groups of pendants can also be cleverly used to help divide more open plan kitchen and dining areas, without blocking off the overall feel of open space and flow.

KITCHEN SPECIAL
General lighting can be provided by directional spotlights however, these rarely give the quality of light that you need for cooking or food preparation. In most circumstances you end up blocking the light or casting shadows over the tasks that you are performing. A potential solution is to fit under cabinet lighting to provide a perfect light for the worktop. LED strips can work beautifully for this type of application with a low running cost and a low profile to keep them hidden from view. I recently saw a kitchen design that had frosted glass splash backs with LED colour changing strips hidden behind them, giving the homeowner the opportunity to change the look and feel.
This is an ingenious idea for neutral themed kitchens where you can have a new look and colour scheme to suit your mood!
Of course traditional recessed spotlights can also provide this kind of general/non directional light, but access issues may not always allow these to be fitted safely, so surface mounted spotlights are often a To compliment your under cabinet lighting better, stress free option. you may like to add some dimmable spotlights or strip lights above your wall cabinets to give some general or reflected light.

THE RECIPE FOR A GREAT KITCHEN WWW.
• Make sure you have enough storage, there is nothing worse than a cluttered kitchen, work tops should be just that, places to work not places to store things. • Keep the gadgets to a minimum and there will be less to store! We all get sucked into that kitchen gadget that is bound to make our life easier but forget that we will probably only use it once or twice! We then confine it to the depths of the cupboards never to be seen again and taking up valuable space.
• Lights in kitchens tend to be on a lot. Make the investment in LED bulbs and start saving. Yes they cost more to begin with but the saving over time is huge! • Use all your corners. There are many inventive corner cabinets available now that don’t lose the invaluable space in the corners. • Keep the flow throughout your home by matching the style with the rest of your rooms. You want to avoid a stark contrast of an ultra modern kitchen in a period or character home and conversely a country kitchen can look out of place in a minimalist contemporary home • Add a splash of colour. Using a splash back to inject some colour into an otherwise neutral kitchen is easily done with tiling, glass or even a funky acrylic pattern.

INSTALLED It’s the sea, the sky, we see blue everywhere. Overwhelmingly chosen as a “favourite colour”. Often seen as a calming and restful shade. Certain shades can be powerful and dynamic. Pantone included one of the more restful shades of blue as one of it’s colours of the Year for 2016 in “Serenity”, both a lovely word and a calming blue that would look great in any room. Blue is such an adaptable colour and, although, sometimes seen as a masculine colour it is universally used and loved by both sexes. Neutral tones are easy to work with and look fabulous in most rooms. Shades of blue with yellow tones, such as turquoise or cobalt, are known as cool blues and these help to make smaller spaces seem bigger. Great for bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices where they will bring a sense of calm and tranquillity. Warmer blues with red tones are more encapsulating and include denim, slate and ocean blue. These shades are better suited for entertaining and social spaces such as living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens. Accent with white and red for a nautical theme, with greens and yellows for a more ‘in keeping with nature’ theme or punctuate with bold bright colours for a real statement.
