The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Where has the year gone? Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like 2022 came in with a bang and continued full speed ahead. And now, here we are, in the midst of the holiday season, when life slows down a bit yet there is so much to do to prepare for family gatherings and the end of the year.
This has been a year of natural disasters, of war, of division, of inflation, yet here we are, still standing, many of us stronger than we were before. We continue to look to the future, working hard, loving and providing for our families, with the goal of doing our part to create a blessed life for our children— and a better world for generations to come.
We all have purpose, and we must live that purpose, despite what is going on around us. We must continue to seek good and do our part to spread that good throughout our neighborhoods, our schools, our communities, and our nation.
The holiday season is a time to give thanks, as we have so much to be thankful for: the roof over our heads, the food on the table, clothes to keep us warm, a vehicle to transport us to and from work. Opportunities abound this time of year to give back to those less fortunate as well. If you can’t afford to give monetarily to a local charity or organization, you can donate gently used clothing and jackets to women’s and children’s shelters; volunteer your time at a food pantry/bank; go through the kids’ toys and stuffed animals, clean them up, and find a way to get them to those children who are less fortunate.
Give and you shall receive. Blessings come to those who assist others—in whatever way that may be.
May we focus on what is important in life as the year comes to an end and welcome 2023 with faith, love and hope.

The holiday season has our eyes turned inward toward home. More time spent at home around loved ones has us pulling out the throw blankets and piling on the pillows. This season’s decor has us creating spaces for more time spent doing indoor activities, making room for holiday gatherings and fostering a feeling of festivity. It’s important that your space reflects what’s most comfortable for you. It’s important that the place you wind down and spend the most time mirrors your individual feelings, memories and style. Decorating for the season means something different for everyone, however, there are common priorities that just might spur your holiday humbug into action.
During the holidays, especially during the winter solstice, it can get pretty dark. One of the themes of the holidays is to bring light into dark spaces. Lighting has a way of creating mood. The same is true in our homes during the holidays. Switching out light fixtures, adding
new lamp shades or hanging twinkle lights from dark corners makes for an instant cozy space. Plus, it’s festive! Bright lights are only necessary while reading, otherwise soft light (such as what comes from a fireplace) creates comfort. Since electricity is a fairly recent invention, it makes sense that our bodies would prepare for sleep and relax more in less invasive bright light. Candles are another inexpensive addition to any space during short winter days. Hanging tea light fixtures along stairwells and hallways makes the switching on and off of lights unnecessary, which is especially convenient if half the house has already gone to bed. In some cultures, it’s customary to place candles in window sills to share light with neighbors during the holiday season. This tradition doubles as a way to bring comfort in the home as well.
More time spent indoors means more activity, not less, happens in your home. Wintertime is a time for rest and rejuvenation. Our space can assist us in time well spent. It’s not the time for big renovations, but
MAKE IT YOUR OWN: This season’s decor has us creating spaces for more time spent doing indoor activities, making room for holiday gatherings and fostering a feeling of festivity. It’s important that your space reflects what’s most comfortable for you.

Wintertime is a time for rest and rejuvenation.
there are simple strategies that everyone can use to open up and declutter our space for the holidays. If you have kids, this might be a good time to build each of them their own creative corners in an out-of-the-way favorite spot, complete with its own light source, pillows, and organization that works for their needs. Actually, this might be a good time for you to build your own creative space, filled with things that both bring you joy and allow you to do whatever makes you feel most constructive. Everyone needs a hub—a space that’s just yours. Otherwise, everyone’s indoor activities go everywhere, and there doesn’t seem to be a place for anything. Encouraging each person in the household to create their own space brings ownership. For common spaces, pay attention to how you and others naturally do things. If there’s a place where people seem to throw their towels, that’s where the laundry hamper goes. If a favorite family activity is movie night, then maybe buy some extra oversized pillows that tuck away in a basket at the side of the couch. This holiday season, bring ownership to your home by tailoring your space to fit your needs.
Usually when it comes to the holiday color scheme, don’t choose anything that doesn’t already work. Nobody needs a complete holiday revamp every year. If you’ve chosen pretty basic wall colors, and generally your regular aesthetic is quiet, solid colors, there is lots of room for color during the holidays. Colored lights to wrap up the stairwell, silver tinsel hung from the windowsill, red bows over the doorways. Your tree might just be a jumble of color, filled with

'Tis
the season for giving, and in Bonners Ferry, embracing the giving spirit is made easier each year, thanks to a community that celebrates supporting local neighbors in need.
When there are community members in need, it tends to be most apparent during the holiday season—fortunately, from supporting local charities to donating time or engaging in acts of kindness, giving back during the holiday season can take many forms and doesn’t have to cost a dime.
And in Bonners Ferry, annual programs like Care-N-Share and BoCo Backpacks' Christmas ornament sale make it even easier to participate in local giving. Both organizations have created opportunities for Bonners Ferry residents to give what they can, whether it be time, resources, or anything in between, and join together to spread some local joy throughout the holiday season.
2021 marked 40 years of the Care-N-Share program, led by Linda Lederhos. For decades, Bonners Ferry residents and local companies have donated money and time to help the Care-N-Share program provide gifts to children in need. This year, the community began supporting its cause weeks before the arrival of the holidays.
“We were blessed by the 9B Quilters,” Linda shared on Facebook in October. “They donated over 70 quilts to our program … They will go to bless so many kids this holiday season. I can’t say thank you enough.”
Linda started the Care-N-Share program 40 years ago, when she worked at the Panhandle Health Clinic as the WIC coordinator. When she learned about a local contest searching for the right placement for a surplus of toys that holiday season, she found homes for the toys using her own client list.

giving back during the holiday season can take many forms and doesn’t have to cost a dime.
Easy ways to spread the holiday spirit across Bonners Ferry this season
The following year, she was approached by local moms to do it all over again. Without the contest supplying the toys, she got creative—this time, drawing from her circle of friends to gather donations of new and used toys.
The Care-N-Share program took off from there to become a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Four decades later, their mission remains the same: providing gifts to Bonners Ferry’s children in need at Christmastime.
Children are provided with gifts and clothing, depending on their unique needs. The program provides a need and wish list for local parents and does its best to fill those requests. Throughout the years, donations provided by the community have been a driving force behind the program. Along with many individual donations, the program receives ample support from local groups including the Bonners Ferry Rotary, Forest Service employees, Valley View Kids, 9B Quilters, Border Patrol and Customs, and many local individuals.
Without the donations received from local groups and individuals, the Care-N-Share program could not continue its mission. “We have so many groups and individuals that help by donating items and money, and without them the program could not continue,” Linda shared.
Local food distribution program BoCo Backpacks aims to support children across Boundary County who are affected by food insecurity. Each year, throughout the month of December, they hold a fundraiser in the form of a Christmas ornament sale. The ornaments are always unique and handcrafted by local students.
Last year, fifth-graders from several local schools decorated the ornaments for the sale. Ornaments were sold and displayed locally, with all proceeds from the sale supporting the BoCo Backpack program in providing healthy foods to children in need across the county.
This November, BoCo Backpacks will begin preparations

for the annual ornament sale, approaching the fifthgrade teachers in Boundary County to aid in crafting the ornaments, determining this year’s venue for ornament sale, and finding a tree to display them on, shared chairperson Shirley Anderson.
Throughout the school year, they also run the BoCo Food Program, which delivers food kits once a week to children across Boundary County. Just like their annual ornament fundraiser, it requires the support of local community members, businesses and organizations to make the food deliveries possible. With the help of the community, Boco Backpacks helps battle food security, not only through the holidays but through the rest of the year.
This holiday season, look locally for your holiday cheer. One of the intrinsic pieces of holiday magic is that it tends to grow the more you give—and, undeniably, part of Bonners Ferry’s magic is its people, businesses, causes and community efforts that make a town a home. With unique organizations that make it easier to come together and help neighbors in need, the opportunities are endless to engage with the local community this holiday season.
Whether it’s supporting a local charity or nonprofit, shopping from a local business, or simply spreading the word about a holiday ornament sale or a toy drive like those from BoCo Backpacks and Care-N-Share, the acts that keep the giving spirit alive through the holidays don't need to be big to make an impact.

ANGIE SCHNUERLE, FOURTH GRADE Mount Hall Elementary School
Growing up in Boundary County, Angie Schnuerle can recall many fond memories of her days as a student at Mount Hall Elementary School.
Now, nearly three decades into her own teaching career, Angie has had the privilege of spending the last 15 years inspiring young minds in the school she grew up in.
After graduating from Bonners Ferry High School and earning a teaching degree from Lewis-Clark State College, Angie made a bold life decision: She took a teaching position in the remote Alaskan village of Nightmute.
“It was amazing,” Angie recounted. “I did a bunch of things that I didn’t think I would have been strong enough to do. I cleaned and cut up a seal. I didn’t have running water, so we had to haul our own sewage and our own water.”
Eventually, after 12 years in Alaska, being so far away from her family started wearing on Angie, so she decided to apply for a teaching position back in Boundary County.
“A week later, I got an interview, and I was hired for kindergarten here at Mount Hall,” Angie recalled.
Kindergarten was an age group Angie had no previous experience with, so the transition was challenging at first, but Angie
came to enjoy her classes each year.
“What I loved about teaching kindergarten was [the students] came in not knowing a lot but left with huge leaps of knowledge,” she shared. “It was great seeing their growth.”
Six years ago, Angie moved to her current role as a fourth-grade teacher, and she now serves as the fourth-grade lead teacher for the school district.
Aside from teaching, Angie loves going on walks outdoors and taking pictures of tiny things like mushrooms or flower petals. This hobby, combined with her love for creativity, led Angie to author a book series called "The Friendship Fairy Club."
Angie’s books, written for a second- to fourth-grade reading level, have become a way for her to inspire creative writing skills in her students.
“I do share my [writing] process with them so they can see that when I ask them to rewrite something, it’s not something that I do just because I want them to be busy,” Angie explained.
Whether she is out on a hike with her two dogs or leading a lesson in the classroom, Angie’s joy for life and passion for teaching are infectious.

Students in the spotlight
BONNERS FERRY HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS
Travis Hinthorn had been teaching physical education and coaching football at Boundary County Middle School for about 20 years when an exceptional group of students came through his program.
They went undefeated in football as fifth- and sixth-graders, and then again in seventh and eighth grade. When it came time for these talented athletes to move up to high school, the timing aligned perfectly for Travis to stick with them—the varsity head coaching position became available, and a job opened to be the high school weightlifting teacher.
Four years later, this group of students are now seniors, and their middle school and junior varsity success has translated to the varsity level.
“There was an opening and I just thought, ‘These kids are a good group, they’re big and athletic, they’re good students and they’re high character kids,” Travis said. “So, they have the total package that works for football.”
Travis explained that the large and talented Class of 2023—23 football players in total—has done great things not only for the Bonners Ferry High School (BFHS) football program but for the entire school.
“It is neat to see them not only develop in football, but you have a couple [students] like Donny Reiss and Tully Reinhardt who have jumped into the leadership class and really built the positive spirit and sportsmanship of the school,” Travis said.
On the football field this season, the senior-laden Badgers have achieved levels of success the team has not seen in more than 20 years.
Travis was a 1990 graduate of BFHS, and he can only recall a handful of seasons in school history that have equaled the number of victories the Badgers have accumulated in 2022.
And the year just got more exciting! Led by Blake Rice’s three-touchdown performance and a stellar defensive effort, the Badgers beat rival Timberlake 1813 on October 21. The win gave Bonners Ferry its first undefeated regular season since 1975 and earned the Badgers a home playoff game against Wood River.
Although he had good things to say about all the seniors, Travis specifically expressed his appreciation for Blake Rice, Cleo Hensley, Dillon Mai and Donny Reiss—the four players the team voted as their captains this season. Travis added that the entire group of seniors have been great role models for younger Badger athletes.
“[The seniors have] showed the norm as to how to be a good student, how to work in the weight room, how to be committed to practice and how to travel,” Travis said.
As he thought about the senior class, whom he has coached since they were in middle school, Travis admitted that graduation this year will be a sad day.
“It will be a happy day at graduation,” Travis laughed, correcting himself. “It will be a sad day the day after graduation.”

14th annual Turkey Trot brings community together Thanksgiving morning THANKFUL
"Why can’t Bonners Ferry have one?” thought Carolyn Birrell, after running several Atlanta Turkey Trots over the years. So, what did she do? In 2009, she orchestrated Bonners Ferry’s first Turkey Trot to the delight of 75 runners. She bought a frozen turkey for the prize drawing and four pumpkin pies to serve at the finish line.
“My Thanksgiving morning has started the same way since 2009. It's dark outside when my alarm goes off. And cold. I can totally understand the temptation to stay in bed,” she says. “But, when you pull into the parking lot and see all the cars streaming in, and then you see someone's kid running toward the food barrel to drop off their bag with a huge grin on their face, how can you not smile and be glad you're there?”
Planning begins at the beginning of October, when Carolyn applies for her city permit and arranges insurance coverage. She then begins contacting her volunteers to make sure they’re available. “I have one couple who hasn’t missed a year of volunteering! Many have been helping for years,” smiles Carolyn. Approximately a half-dozen people help with the event, from
setup and hand-numbering to food bank collection and burnbarrel management. “I’ll never turn away help,” she adds.
Each year since the inaugural event, the number of runners has beat the previous year’s—even despite COVID. Last year’s Turkey Trot welcomed 267 participants, and Carolyn anticipates even more for 2022.
The 2022 Turkey Trot—the 14th annual—will take place on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 24, at 9am, at the Boundary County Fairgrounds’ parking lot.
“Participants can expect an upbeat morning filled with great music, shout-out trivia, smiling faces, and a general feeling throughout the crowd of genuine thanksgiving,” affirms Carolyn.
Having partnered with the Food Bank (which provides the Turkey Trot’s event insurance), runners are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item (or more!) to donate. “Just knowing that you're contributing to someone else's well-being by donating food and saying hello to people you might not have seen all year fills a person with light and happiness,” shares Carolyn.

She buys several frozen turkeys and gathers dozens of other prizes donated by local merchants for the pre-race Turkey Trivia, along with a huge stack of pumpkin pies to serve up at the finish line with whipped cream, and hot cocoa and coffee. They even have prizes for costumes!
Runners are advised to get there early, enjoy some heat from the burn barrel, get their hand numbered for the prize table, and play Turkey Trivia. Adam Reeves, Forerunner Entertainment, has been donating his time the last several years to provide the awesome music at the start/finish line of the event.
Each year, as she walks through the crowds and hears the laughter, Carolyn reminds herself to take a moment to enjoy the pure joy that she sees when looking up from serving pie and pouring cocoa.
Participants don’t have to be runners to enjoy a morning at the Turkey Trot. “Bring your dog! Walk with a friend! You'll be surprised by how many familiar faces you'll see—all with huge smiles on them—and giving thanks,” affirms Carolyn, adding, “If 2022 marks your first year at the Turkey Trot, I will make you a dollar bet that it won't be your last.”
For those interested in volunteering, Carolyn welcomes you to give her a call at 208.290.7039.

VFW Post 3622 raises awareness for the challenges local veterans face
by CHRISTIAN WEANER
Awarrior does not return from battle the same as they were when they left.
That is a reality that Michael Spurgeon, U.S. Air Force veteran and senior vice commander of Bonners Ferry’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3622, knows well.
“No matter which conflict you were in, you cannot just be in conflict and then come home,” Michael said. “You don’t just take your boots and your helmet off and become the same Joe Schmo or Jane Doe that you were before you left. It doesn’t work—you change.”
Michael served in the Air Force from 1966 through 1988, making multiple deployments to Vietnam during his time in the military. He remembers the challenges of returning to civilian life after his years of service. Along with the camaraderie the VFW provides, helping others through those difficulties is why Michael participates.
“Having friends and meeting different people who have had some of the same experiences I did [is what I enjoy the most],” Michael said. “And then being able to help with some of the other individuals in the county that, for one reason or another, aren’t coping with life here successfully—those are the biggest two reasons [I joined].”
Michael grew up in Bonners Ferry but spent much of his service time deployed overseas or on bases in Florida and Texas. He eventually came back to North Idaho to be with his father, who was sick, and ended up staying in the area.
About 10 years ago, Michael began to take on leadership positions not only in the VFW but in Bonners Ferry’s Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and American Legion posts as well. In addition to his role with the VFW, Michael is also the commander of the local DAV and is a quartermaster in the American Legion.
Holding these positions gives Michael opportunities to serve the large population of veterans and their families in Boundary County.
“In all [that we do], our basic function is to help any of the veterans in the area that need help and their families that need help if we can,” Michael said.
“The main mission of the VFW, the American Legion and the DAV are basically the same,” he added. “Their main function is to help the less advantaged service people.”
Some of the services VFW Post 3622 can provide include loaning

medical equipment or driving a veteran to and from a doctor’s appointment in Spokane. Bonners Ferry’s VFW also stays active in the community by helping with events, sponsoring scholarships for local students and donating money to Boundary County School District’s Alpha+2130 robotics team.
One upcoming event that Michael and his fellow VFW members are looking forward to is the Veterans and First Responders Run, Walk and Roll scheduled for Saturday, November 12, at Riverside Park in Bonners Ferry.
“This year, one of the retirees in the area is actually running that event,” Michael noted. “So, of course, the VFW and the [American Legion and DAV] will support as much as they can there.”
Michael said he hoped this event would continue to make people aware of the VFW and the work that they do to help local veterans.
Many people are often unaware of the challenges that service men and women face when they return home from conflicts around the world, Michael explained, which is why he believes educating people about organizations like the VFW is so important.
“Programs like the Wounded Warrior and other groups that are out there have actually made the average American civilian much more aware of the difficulties that someone in the military has to adjust back to [when they return from battle],” Michael said.
He added that unless veterans have a community behind them that is supportive, they will often slip through the cracks without getting the help they need to transition back to civilian life.
When he first came home from Vietnam, many people did not pay Michael much attention or thank him for his service, he remembered. That is something he has slowly seen improve over the years, as the public becomes more aware of the sacrifices that American armed service men and women make every day.
“I’d like to see the awareness continue to grow and to be able to have the civilian world to greet these people back,” Michael said. “There are some beautiful programs by different organizations that are doing that.”

34 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL november/december 2022 Dedicated to children and families … beyond the classroom walls AN INTENTIONAL APPROACH TO LEARNING
The road to establishing
9B Family Foundations is the culmination of 18 years of experience with children in varying capacities, starting when founder and owner Charli Turner started a daycare center in Great Falls, Montana, with her friend Misty Filipowicz. “I wanted a job where I could have my own children with me and be able to still have an income,” she recalls. In 2010, Charli would take a job as a house mom at Mountain States Children’s Home in Longmont, Colorado. During her seven years there, 15 girls in crisis would live under her care, receiving an education and a stable home, while working through the aftermath of abuse, neglect and dysfunction within their families.
Charli would go on to work at Northwest Academy in Naples until they closed in 2018. “At that point, I really wanted to get back to working with younger children—and most of all their families,” she reflects. “I have seen how much heartache can happen in the first 18 years of life, and I want to help families navigate those early years with their children—and hopefully be able to avoid heartache down the road.”
In January of 2022, she opened 9B Family Foundations. Providing a non-denominational, faith-based preschool with the option of full-time childcare, Charli has been blessed to have an amazing team of people to take this journey with her; caring for approximately 35 children each day (19 of those in diapers or who are potty training).
“While rewarding, this job is high stress,” she says. “Most jobs are 8 to 5, but to accommodate a ‘normal’ eight-hour workday for our families, we are open 7am to 6pm. Our schedule is very structured and consistent, and every single activity is intentional. So even if we are sitting on the floor playing blocks with the babies, we are talking about shapes and colors, or animals and textures. If we are playing with playdough, we are developing muscles and learning to make the shape of our letters and numbers.”
What truly sets 9B Family Foundations apart from other preschools and childcare centers in the area is the family resource side of the business. “We work to help families in our community find the resources they need from housing and finding a counselor
to purchasing food, diapers and clothing for their children,” shares Charli. “Most of the time, people in crisis just need help in a moment to get through a rough patch, a new move, or while waiting for that first paycheck after getting a new job.”
9B Family Foundations offers free parenting classes, working alongside and offering solutions for young families. They meet with families privately to create daily schedules to eliminate stress and discipline issues within the home, as well as coach families through developmental milestones to understand how to best parent each child as an individual. They teach parents how to budget and shop efficiently to make their money stretch as far as possible. In addition, 9B Family Foundations works with families in “transition.” This transition could be a divorce or blending of a family to adjusting to a family member who is returning from deployment or about to be deployed.
Charli, who grew up as a military brat, is a graduate of Bonners Ferry High School, and though life took her away from the area for 20 years, she was thankful for the opportunity to move back and build a life in her hometown.
“This was my favorite place that I have ever lived. The community is strong and self-sufficient and at the same time hospitable. The people here look out for each other, and I love how other businesses support each other. For our childcare community, we have had outstanding support from teachers, doctors, clerks and the trades in our community, who have not only entrusted us with their children, but many donate to our Family Resource Center with resources of their own. It is a tightly woven community, and it is a beautiful thing.”
Charli is thankful for the dedication of her staff to make this program the best possible opportunity for their kids and families. “We love being part of this community, and we are looking forward to seeing how 9B Family Foundations grows,” she smiles. “We are looking to expand into different areas as the community grows and has need for our services.”

He althy keeping a Holiday Balance
There is a time for everything
by R ACHEL K ELLY
42 BONNERS FERRY LIVING LOCAL november/december 202242
There’s a time for everything, even during the holidays. There’s a time for family, and there’s time for celebration. There’s time to decorate, time to get out the door, and a time for those holiday traditions. There’s even time for some of that spiced eggnog that is only available seasonally. But whether you will truly have time or not comes down to whether you are able to keep a healthy balance this holiday season. But with the holidays comes the pull of activities that are sure to yank you right off track to enjoying the season. There can be so many expectations during the holidays; expectations from others but also expectations that we put on ourselves. It can take a lot of effort to keep one’s priorities straight. This year, prioritize yourself, your family, your work and the holidays in a way that makes the most sense for the things that matter most.
Prioritizing yourself is often the hardest to accomplish during the holiday season. However, for many of us, “me time” should be the first thing we do. Not because you should be selfish, as if that’s even possible. Self-care doesn’t mean that we have to sacrifice making sure others are cared for. It’s just a fact that if you don’t fill your cup, you won’t have anything to give. Everything suffers when we don’t prioritize selfcare, especially in situations where you may be maxed out. Sometimes prioritizing yourself might mean waking up 15 minutes early every day to enjoy some extra silence over your favorite hot morning beverage. Sometimes it might mean organizing your day in such a way that you can have an extra 10 minutes at the end of every day to just be still. Sometimes it might mean going on a short walk or making a point to take a few hours once a week doing something you love. Little by little, consistent selfcare chips away at the stress that has a tendency to build up. Prioritizing yourself might mean that someone else around you might need to adjust their routine, such as going to bed earlier or making sure they’re around during the time that you’ve hedged out for yourself. Sometimes they might be upset about this (kids, this is you), but it’s important that everyone in every household shares the load of responsibility, so that each individual is cared for—including you. This might take some conversation, and it might take some compromise, but it’s worth it.

Prioritizing your family is probably next on most people’s list. Or maybe prioritizing those that you consider to be like family. There are just some activities and some plans that can’t be rescheduled this time of year, and missing them would take away from joy. It can be easy to under-appreciate those people closest to us, because we feel secure that they will always be there. Regardless, every relationship needs attention. Doing things this holiday season with those loved ones should be top on the list, as they are sure to bring the most joy this time of year. Usually, however, there is more than one loved one. Many people find themselves split between many different familial expectations from both sides. These activities can sometimes clash, so communication is key here. It’s no fun if you spread yourself too thin. Be sure to communicate what you can and can’t do for your own sanity, and let the rest be what it will be.
Prioritizing work where it should be during the holidays often means that not everything is done to perfection. However, it will be done the best you possibly can do, and that will have to be enough. Making money is all well and good, but it means very little if you have no time to use it. Especially during the time of year where money and time can be used so well. Do what needs to be done, hit your deadlines and demolish that project while you’re working. But when you’re
off, you’re off. If you truly can’t get away, turn everything off. Give yourself a staycation, at home, and unplug from whatever pulls you where you don’t need to be. This might mean that you might have to cut back in some ways, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the fruits of your labor. There is a reason that work is not prioritized at the top of the list; it’s just not the most important thing.
The holidays are a time where we remember and focus on what is most important. The weather turns, the holidays begin, and we invest in all the people, activities and things that get us through the darker/colder parts of the year. There’s a reason that the holidays are all stacked on top of each other. This time of year, we all feel the need for a pick-meup. The holidays are supposed to be a time of rest, encouragement and celebration. That is, if we can keep a healthy balance throughout. Keeping our priorities straight will help us to drop whatever doesn’t fit, so that we’re capable of making decisions between all the different things that pull at us this season. Being still and simply being thankful is a much-underrated skill.
This year, let’s harbor thankfulness by giving ourselves the time and the space to appreciate what makes the holidays so special.

Are You Experiencing the ‘Winter Blues’?
Ways to improve your well-being during the cold season
A s those colder, shorter, darker days are here, and will be for a while, it is important to not let those winter blues get you down. As we spend approximately six months of the year without adequate exposure to sunlight, this can lead to chronic deficiencies in an essential nutrient—vitamin D3. Lack of natural sunlight also leads to an imbalance in the hormones cortisol and melatonin.
Here’s how you can better prepare your body and mind for the winter to help with seasonal depression: Be sure to take a vitamin D3 supplement. Get outside early to expose yourself to natural light (even when it’s cold outside). Avoid blue light two hours before bed to help ensure you get adequate sleep in order to wake up refreshed. Prioritize daily exercise. Eat anti-inflammatory foods. Open the shades to let the light in. Brighten up your home with color (think indoor plants and inspiring artwork).
Don’t neglect your mental and physical health this season. Make yourself a priority, and you’ll see the difference it can make.

Managing and Preventing Diabetes
Easy tips and tricks to control your blood sugar
by DANIELLE LARSSON, BOUNDARY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
Diabetes touches many lives and is steadily on the rise. According to the CDC, one in 10 Americans have diabetes and one in three Americans have prediabetes; of those with prediabetes, more than 80 percent are unaware they have it.1 Eleven percent of adults living in Boundary County have been diagnosed with diabetes compared to 9 percent of Idaho adults.2
Unmanaged blood sugar affects every major organ in the body. It can lead to cardiovascular disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, blindness, poor circulation, loss of sensation in extremities, increased risk of infection, and in extreme cases, amputations due to loss of circulation and infections. Since a significant portion of those with prediabetes are unaware that they have it, screening is crucial if you have any associated risk factors; obesity, 45 years or older, a family history with type 2 diabetes, physically inactive, ever having gestational diabetes, or having polycystic ovary syndrome. However, Dr. Polonsky, a diabetes specialist, said, "Diabetes in good control is the leading cause of nothing."
These tips can be used by anyone to help encourage a healthy lifestyle and help prevent the development of diabetes or prediabetes in the future. Nourishing your body, managing stress and being active throughout your life has a lasting effect on your body's ability to fight off illness and disease. Mindful eating and increased physical activity can significantly improve your health by managing your blood sugar, reversing prediabetes or preventing it altogether:
•Eating a combination of fiber-rich carbohydrates, lean protein and heart-healthy fats can promote more stable glucose levels by slowing down the digestion of glucose and delays absorption into the bloodstream.
•The order in which you eat your food matters. Eat your protein, vegetables and heart-healthy fats before you eat your carbohydrates. They will naturally help stabilize your blood sugar. Study results showed that glucose levels were improved by as much as 37 percent using this method; insulin was also significantly lower.3 It is important to note that saturated fats can worsen insulin resistance, while poly- and monounsaturated fats improve it.4
•Examples of healthy fats are olive oil, nuts, sardines, salmon, flax seeds and avocados.
•Examples of fats to limit are fast-food, processed foods and animal fats (meats, cheese, cream, butter, lard).
•Eating at regular intervals also helps the body maintain stable blood glucose.
•Fiber helps stabilize blood sugar, protects your heart, helps maintain digestive health, and keeps you feeling full longer.
•Increasing physical activity is especially beneficial after eating!
Start exercising about 30 minutes after a meal. Using large muscle groups like your quads is most impactful (i.e., walking, using stairs, or squats). Be sure to check your blood sugar levels before exercising; if your blood sugar is above 300, postpone exercising until you can get it below 180. If you use insulin, check after to ensure your levels don't drop too low. Before starting or changing your exercise regimen, talk with your doctor to determine what is best for you.5
There’s no wrong time to embrace real food and optimize your health. Incrementally making small changes in your lifestyle leads to significant change overtime. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the information out there, but you don’t have to manage it alone. Boundary Community Hospital offers a Diabetes Support Group that meets the third Monday of each month at 1pm in the Fry Healthcare Education Building. For more information, call 208.267.3141.

SURREY
Surrey, British Columbia, is just across the United States border into Canada. It is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the Metro Vancouver area. In the area known by Canadians as “the Lower Mainland,” it stretches from Tidal Flats in the west all the way to the Fraser Valley in the east. The Surrey Spice Trail will take you across six neighborhoods to showcase the vibrant and diverse foodie scene. Discover strip-mall dives to high-end dining and everything in between.
Surrey is known as “The City of Parks,” and over 50 percent of Surrey is greenspace, which includes farms, golf courses, parks, gardens and urban forests. There are so many ways to enjoy the outdoors. Head to White Rock, one of Surrey’s neighboring communities, to enjoy views for miles and a large sand tidal beach. Stroll the waterfront with its cute shops, ice cream parlors and restaurants. Saunter down the longest pier in Canada. With Surrey situated on the Pacific Flyway, a north-south migratory bird route, the area is very popular with birdwatchers. With over 200 species of birds, it is easy to see why. Cycling is a loved activity, and there are plenty of hiking and walking trails throughout the city.

EAT
The Surrey Spice Trail is a must do while visiting this area. The diversity of food offerings gives you the opportunity to experience a variety of international cuisine. You’ll find family owned businesses sharing their traditional meals cooked with love. You’ll also find well-known chefs at places like My Shanti, where Vikram VI works his magic. The options can be overwhelming, so visit the Spice Trail website to locate restaurants on an interactive map. Tapping on a restaurant will give you a description of the restaurant experience, photos of their signature dishes, and tips.
Chacha’s is a North Indian restaurant that offers a special dish just on weekends. This very popular, bright, modern eatery will have you feeling like you stepped into a Bollywood movie, as the music and aromas of this unique cuisine envelop you as you walk to your table. For an appetizer, try the Gol Gappay Shots. This darling dish is presented in a miniature cart like the ones you would see on the streets of India. A crispy, round, hollow shell known as a puri is stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas and chutneys. You take it and add the tangy-flavored water it is served with and pop the whole thing into your mouth. So fun. Order the Paneer Kulcha, only available on weekends. Kulcha is a special seasoned Indian flatbread that is stuffed (choose from a variety of meats or veggies) and crispy. The dish is served with chickpeas and raita, a classic Indian yogurt sauce.

DOHead out to Mud Bay Park to access the Boundary Bay Trail. This lovely, scenic walk will take you along the shores of Boundary Bay. This area is one of the most important bird areas in Canada and the best place to see shorebirds. Take the 3-kilometers-long nature trail (you can find a brochure at the website). Look for seals at high tide in the waves. At low tide, birds flock to the mudflats and eelgrass meadows to dine. Hundreds of thousands of birds visit throughout the year; some arrive from as far away as South America. If you want to hike further or do a bike ride, the trail links up with the Dyke Trail for another 20 kilometers of shoreline ending in Boundary Bay Regional Park.
Take some time to explore historic Cloverdale. This is Surrey’s birthplace, where it started out as a small farm community in 1870. Downtown Cloverdale has a business district with more than 200 shops and restaurants. Access a walking and driving tour brochure from the website.
