Idaho Governor Butch Otter officially proclaimed July 19, the day the state champion Boundary County Yankees begin play in the U-13 Intermediate Little League Northwest Regional tournament in Irvine, California, as Idaho Intermediate Little League All Stars Day. Though they came away from that tourney with three losses and a win, they came home with heads held high.

hey may only be 12 and 13 years old, but you can bet that whenever these guys get together, now or later in life, talk will inevitably turn to July 14, 2013. The day the Boundary County Yankees won the Idaho U-13 Intermediate Little League Baseball Idaho State Championship.
Hours: Mon-Sat, 9am-6pm 6788 South Main Street Bonners Ferry, Idaho 208.267.9607
Bonners Ferry Mayor David Anderson proclaimed the week of their return, August 5 through 9, Bonners Ferry Little League Week. Accolades poured in on their achievements; U.S. Senator Mike Crapo, U.S. Congressman Raul Labrador and Idaho Senator Shawn Keough were included among the many offering heartfelt congratulations. Yankees coaches Cal Bateman and Ted Flint said they don’t really like to talk the team up as they feels it’s boastful, but they admitted that this team is special and each player; Brady Bateman, Seth Bateman, Jesse Dunham, Trey Flint, Tyrone Larson, Raul Rodriguez, Kendall Stone, Anthony Bennett, Pacen Pluid and Kobe Norwood, all 13 except for Seth, who is 12, deserve a ton of credit for their hard work and determination. It was a Cinderella season, a season in which the Yankees, playing in the first year of a new division, went undefeated in District 1 regular season league play, capping it off by edging out the Hayden All Stars July 3, 10-9, and earning a shot at the state title. Underdogs all season long, one mother

quipped they looked like David facing Goliath when they first met the North Boise All Stars to play a three game series for the state championship. “The Boise team came out in brand new uniforms and gear, they even had custom bat bags!” she said. “Our guys were wearing the same uniforms they’d worn all season, and they showed the wear. We had fewer players, less equipment. No one thought we had a chance.” What no one counted on was the heart in the Boundary County Yankees, who stunned North Boise in game one, winning 6-4. North Boise came back in game two, 9-7, setting up a winner take all game three. North Boise built a 6-0 lead early, but the Yankees exploded, taking a 16-8 lead in the fifth inning. But North Boise wasn’t finished, regaining a 17-16 lead in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Having put nearly everything they had into the game by this point, no one would have blamed the Yankees for having fought a valiant fight. According to coach Cal Bateman, most of the team was fighting back tears. But the Yankees reached down deep and pulled out a miracle. After working a 2-2 count, Brady connected with a double to left center just out of reach of the North Boise Center fielder, Tyrone Larson crossed home to tie, and Placen tore in from second to score the winning run. The Yankees fell in on themselves in celebration, and Coach Bateman finally gave an attributed quote, streaked with tears of his own. “You would have thought we lost the game with all the crying that was going on,” he said. It was the neatest experience to watch these kids celebrate. We were never supposed to be here, but here we are, and we’re going to the Western Regionals in California to represent the State of Idaho...we just can’t believe it.”

RISING STARS Sydney Hubbard & Lakota Mclean Article by Patty Hutchens
Sydney Hubbard
For graduate Sydney Hubbard, her most memorable high school moment came in her final day at Bonners Ferry High School when all of the senior class camped out overnight on the school lawn. But that does not mean the rest of her high school was uneventful. D u r i n g her years at Bonners Ferry, Sydney served as the captain of the soccer team for two years, was voted MVP on the soccer team and also was voted most inspirational. She said her biggest challenge in life thus far is to always be true to herself. “I’m still trying to overcome it, it’s the rest of your life type of challenge,” said Sydney. In addition to soccer, Sydney was also on the track team for Bonners Ferry. She said she enjoyed going to state for track, but said soccer is her favorite sport. “It’s a great environment and we have the best coach,” she said. Her church youth group also kept her very busy and involved in activities.
Favorite teachers: Mr. Knaggs “Who doesn’t love an awesome art teacher,” said Sydney; and Mr. Butler: “He has great style and a lot of sarcasm.”
Lakota Mclean
Lakota Mclean has learned a lot during her high school years. As she begins the next chapter in her life as a college student at BYU – Idaho, she said the most important lesson she will carry with her is one she learned from her high school teacher Mr. Knaggs . “Don’t fear the beauty of the unknown.” She credits Knaggs with not only teaching her this important life lesson, but also helping her boost her self-confidence.

Lakota said she loves Michael Jordan, Dodge Rams, farming and Johnny Depp. At BYU – Idaho she plans to major in agriculture. “Farming is the single most beautiful thing on the planet,” she said.
Sydney will attend BYU-Idaho this year where she plans to study fine arts. “It’s a form of freedom of speech, (and offers) a high level of persuasion,” said Sydney who also plans to serve a 1 ½ year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.
When asked what her biggest life challenge has been, she said it was the shyness she felt in middle school. “Then I got my best friend,” said Lakota joyfully.

Four Tips to Avoid the Burn After Workouts Structured Rest Helps Muscles Build Back Faster
M
any Americans equate exercise with pain -- they want to “feel the burn” because “there’s no gain without pain.” But when it comes to gaining muscle, rest is just as important as repetition.
* Fuel yourself. Prior to a workout, your body needs carbohydrates, so snack on fruit or oats. Consuming an energy drink or bar during long workouts can help boost your muscles’ glycogen, or energy stores, so you won’t feel as sore post-workout.
Exercise causes small tears in muscle fibers. During rest, the body works to repair those muscles, building them back stronger than they were.
For approximately two hours after exercise, your body can synthesize carbohydrates and protein faster than normal, so make sure you eat healthy carbohydrates and protein soon after exercise. Good choices include toast with fruit or a whole-wheat bagel with peanut butter.
Experienced athletes know the value of structured rest -- many strive to help their muscles build back as fast as possible so they can move on to harder, longer and more challenging workouts. But even casual athletes and weekend warriors can takes steps towards smarter rest. The experts at W.F. Young, Inc., the company that makes Absorbine Jr. pain relieving liquid, offers the following tips: * Start slow. Many people make the mistake of trying to do too much too fast. If you haven’t participated in an activity for a while, ease yourself in -- start with a moderate 15 to 30 minutes of activity, and increase duration and intensity by no more than 10 percent each week. Vary your workouts so you give each muscle group one to three days of rest, depending on your fitness level. 8 Bonners Ferry Living Local | www.bonnersferryliving.com
* Soothe your muscles. If your muscles are sore after exercise, use heat, massage and gentle stretching to increase circulation and promote healing. Use Absorbine Jr. pre- or postworkout for added relief -; the fast-absorbing, pain relieving liquid uses botanical extracts to soothe aches, pains and strains, so you’ll be ready for your next workout in no time. * Embrace active recovery. Your muscles need rest -- but rest can mean a brisk walk or a slow bike ride. In fact, gently exercising during a rest day can increase blood flow to sore areas, helping muscles recover more quickly than a few hours spent vegging on the couch.

SAVORY APPLE-ONION TART Getting together with family and friends is the best part of the fall and winter holidays. When it’s your turn to entertain, you want to offer guests hors d’oeuvres that look sophisticated and elegant but are, in reality, easy and quick. Savory Onion & Apple Tart is just the thing. You can start it hours before, then assemble and pop it under the broiler as guests arrive.
5 Community Title, LLC
2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme or 2 teaspoons dry thyme Preheat oven to 425 F. In large, nonstick skillet, over medium low heat, heat oil. Add onions and half of the apples; cook, stirring occasionally, until they are very soft and begin to caramelize, about 25 minutes (mixture will appear to “melt” and become spreadable). Meanwhile, coat baking sheet with non-stick spray. Press dough into rectangle on baking sheet. Prick dough all over with fork tines to prevent bubbling. Bake until lightly brown, about 10 minutes; remove from oven. Spread apple and onion mixture over dough; sprinkle with cheese. Just before serving, top with thyme and remaining sliced apples; broil on high until apples begin to wilt, about 1 minute. Cut into squares and serve. To substitute large prepared baked pizza crust (such as Boboli) for the refrigerated pizza dough, simply omit baking crust.
Yield: 16 appetizer servings 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 medium-sized onions, thinly sliced (about 9 cups) 2 medium-sized red apples, cored, thinly sliced (about 3 cups), divided 1 can (13.8 ounces) refrigerated pizza dough (such as Pillsbury) 1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese or feta cheese
