HELPING YOU & YOUR COMMUNITY According to consumer data from 2011, 87 percent of polled shoppers believe that small businesses are a critical component to economic health in the U.S. That 87 percent is spot-on. Small businesses employ nearly half of all private-sector workers and provide 42.9 percent of the private-sector payroll. In addition to generating jobs, thriving locally owned establishments raise real estate values and stimulate entire communities. Small businesses have always helped local communities thrive. Because local businesses recycle money through the community and create jobs, they boost the economy more than chain stores or retailers that aren’t locally owned. They are typically more supportive of local non-profits, arts, youth sports and other organizations. Data from the American Express Independent Retail Index suggest that strong local businesses even lead to greater property values for homeowners. The report discovered the home values in 27 different neighborhoods with booming independent businesses outperformed their broader markets by 50 percent over the last 14 years. So while shopping large retail stores or online can be convenient, we encourage you to take a moment to consider shopping local. These business owners are friends and neighbors and the jobs they create help keep the local economy strong. Owners are passionate about their business and providing you the consumer with a quality product at a fair price. We realize it is not always possible to purchase what you need locally, so we merely ask you to Think Local, Buy Local and Deal It Local! Visit www.dealitlocal.com for the areas BEST local deals!

ARTICLE BY JESS BREMER (A.K.A. HIPPIE CHIC)

H

ippie Chic Cosmetics came to life in my home in Moyie Springs, Idaho after my sister-in-law was diagnosed with cancer and had many rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Her skin suffered the effects of all of the toxins that were being put into her body. Her hands were oozing and infected and she got prescription creams from the doctor that weren’t helping. So, I started making salves to help her heal them. It was rewarding to see the “natural” stuff was working when steroid creams weren’t. So, next it was lotions, face creams, bug sprays, etc. You get the idea...I studied a lot, experimented a lot, messed up a lot, and then created a lot of good stuff! And, now I’m sharing it. I’m not a physician and I don’t have a degree, but I do know that God gave us a lot of good things that we can use to either heal or help the body with.

Dodge Peak Lodge

Dodge Peak Lodge and 505 Steak & Sushi ARTICLE BY MIKE WELAND

T

here’s a new, upscale eatery in town, 505 Steak & Sushi, which officially opened in Boners Ferry November 30.

The business, formerly known as Bear Creek Lodge, has been undergoing a steady and on-going transformation since being purchased by Kevin and Jennifer McLeish early last spring. Now named Dodge Peak Lodge/505 Steak & Sushi, the dining room and kitchen have undergone a major remodel to bring out the ambiance of the natural wood construction and take full advantage of the warm beauty in the dining area of the new restaurant.

finishing when she learned of the new venture and came home to interview. She returned to Wenatchee, learned she’d been accepted as manager, graduated June 16, packed up and moved back to Bonners Ferry with her son, Kobe, now in the eighth grade at Boundary County Middle School. Tim Linton had been the chef at the Coeur d’Alene Resort for about a year when he saw an ad for the new Dodge Peak Lodge and a new restaurant that hadn’t been given a formal name yet. On a whim, he and his wife, Angela, made the drive north and liked what they saw, and just like that, one of the hardest to fill positions in any restaurant, that of chef, was filled.

Before taking over at the restaurant, Tim had grown up in Seaside, Oregon, and he began working at Dagget’s Restaurant, starting out on the ground floor and working closely with two classically trained French chefs until, two years later, he was made chef and for the next 20-years he took on ever While the work was underway through the summer, concerns greater responsibilities in about staffing fell by the wayside almost serendipitously. the Keg Restaurant chain, which operates 105 restaurants in the United States and 85 in Tamra Hiatt, who was raised in Bonners Ferry but moved Canada. away to pursue a career with Kia, was living in Wenatchee when, after 13 years, Kia cut staff. She decided to go to school “By training, I’m a French chef,” he said, “But over the years to pursue an accounting and business degree and was just I’ve worked all cuisines. French chef with my own flair!” And that flair fits perfectly with the concept behind 505 Steak & Sushi, so named because it’s near milepost 505 on Highway 95. “We’re upscale and semicasual,” Tamra said. The menu, as the remainder of the name implies, includes steak, seafood and sushi. There’s prime rib and fresh salmon, a variety of burgers, including their signature burger; a half pound patty of fresh beef snuggled between two grilled cheese sandwiches. All the sauces and soups are made fresh from scratch. There’s a full children’s menu, a fine selection of beer and wine, and the focus, Tamra said, is on featuring local meats and wines. In addition to fine dining, 505 Steak & Sushi is also going to be a great place for special occasions, business meetings and other get-togethers, and a place for sports fans as well. Each Sunday will be “Super Sports Sunday,” with a game on the big screen and plenty of snacks, including wings.

On New Years Eve, they’re bringing in comedian Daryl Makk, who has regaled audiences in the U.S., Canada and Australia since first taking the stage in 1993, for an evening of fine dining and fun, or just fun if you’re so inclined. By reservation only, the evening begins with dinner at 7pm and comedy at 9pm. Admission is $35 per person or $65 a couple, which includes an entrée meal of prime rib, pork tenderloin or salmon, and the Daryl Makk show. For those wanting only to see the show, admission is $15. Plans are also underway for a big Super Bowl party February 3, and 505 Steak & Sushi is already taking reservations for upcoming holiday parties. Formally, 505 Steak & Sushi is at 5952 Main Street, just south of Bonners Ferry, right at Funkhouser Street, though milepost 505 is much easier to remember. Stick to a Winter-Wellness Routine HOW TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY & AVOID THE FLU

M

ost of us can’t survive the winter without falling prey to at least one virus, infection or zealous set of cold germs. The phrase “winter wellness” sometimes seems like an oxymoron.

After all, staying indoors in a closed air system makes people more susceptible to certain germs. Winter’s affection for cold, dry air means germs will stay airborne longer. Just like adding layers of hats and scarves, we must add layers of immune support to bolster our defenses. For many families, the flu vaccine is a viable option, but don’t take any chances. Fortify your body’s immune system by making smart dietary choices, too. To keep your family healthy through the winter cold/flu season, use the following advice to keep the sniffles at bay. Keep vitamins, minerals and supplements on hand. In addition to vitamin C, zinc, echinacea and fish oil are all proven to strengthen immunity. If natural herbs and roots aren’t cutting it, use reliable flu medicine like products from Rexall. For over 100 years, Rexall products have been working to keep families healthy during cold/flu season.

Rexall products are available at more than 10,000 Dollar General locations, making them affordable to all kinds of families. Learn more at www.dollargeneral.com. Stock kitchen with immune-system boosters. A healthy diet is one of the most effective ways to help the body fend off illness, but you have to know what you’re looking for. Green tea helps fight viruses, especially if combined with anti-inflammatories like ginger. The more vitamin C, the merrier, so get your daily serving(s) of orange juice. Add cashews for healthy fats and extra antioxidants. Other edible flu-fighters include mushrooms, red peppers, sweet potatoes, garlic, whole grains and beans. Common sense is king. Common sense rules for hygiene are twice as important during cold weather. Be extra diligent about the basics—i.e., cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing, and carefully wash your hands often. Remember, the more tired or worn out you feel, the longer your immune system will take to respond. So, get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water.

NECESSARY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

M

ore than one in three seniors over age 65 fall each year, and the National Institute on Aging (NIA) says 80 percent of these falls are in the bathroom. Due to the multitude of unforgiving and slippery surfaces, bathrooms are very hazardous for the home. Knowing how to get in and out of tubs and showers properly and equipping homes with necessary safety precautions can reduce senior falls, keep them out of the emergency room and possibly extend their life. According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.6 million older adults seek emergency care each year for fall-related injuries, fractures or head trauma. In addition to potentially losing their independence, seniors 65 years old and up have a 25 percent chance of dying within six months to a year if they fall and break a hip. Seniors are vulnerable to falls for many reasons -- eyesight and reflexes aren’t as razor-sharp as they used to be, not to mention the balance issues posed by diabetes, heart disease, thyroid conditions and various medications. One of the most effective ways to preserve balance is to stay active with an exercise regimen. Ask your doctor about exercises designed to improve balance, stability and overall mobility, such as moderate yoga. But, another preventative method recommended by physicians is installing a shower or tub built around the unique needs of elderly adults. For example, Safe Step Tub Walk-In Tub Company’s new walk-in shower has a foldable

chair, flexible shower wand, grab bars, ultra-low step up and other senior-friendly features. And since the cost of retirement is high for many seniors, installation is included in the price. To find out more about these showers and walk-in tubs or to request a free brochure and DVD, visit www.safesteptub.com/ news Besides a customized shower or bath, NIA and the American Geriatrics Society advise the following bathroom safety precautions for seniors: • Non-slip rubber mats in front of sink, toilet and shower/bath. • Grab bars inside and outside of shower/bath and on either side of the toilet (these are much stronger than towel racks, which aren’t meant to support weight). • Bright lights that are easily accessible.

Arriving in Bonners Ferry in 1971, he worked with Dr. Edwards as a Physician Assistant. He left the community to continue his education and obtain a degree as a medical doctor

from the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. Upon completion of his degree, he returned to Bonners Ferry setting up a solo practice. He discovered a love of medicine after he enlisted in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. That love of medicine became the driving force in his life, leading him through two tours in Vietnam helping sick and wounded marines, then on to a lifetime of service to the community of Boundary County. “Enough good things cannot be said about Ernie Lucero,” said Johnson. “His family, our community, our entire hospital family, and his patients have suffered a great loss. He was truly one of a kind and will not be forgotten.”

NEW YEAR’S EVE

On New Year’s Eve, Marilyn stood up in the local pub and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted every husband to be standing next to the one person who made his life worth living. Well, it was kind of embarrassing. As the clock struck, the bartender was almost crushed to death.

THE RING BEAR

At a friend’s wedding, everything went smoothly until it was time for the flower girl and her young escort to come down the aisle. The boy stopped at every pew, growling at the guests. When asked afterward why he behaved so badly, he explained, “I was just trying to be a good ring bear.”

A DREAM

Jemima was taking an afternoon nap on New Year’s Eve before the festivities. After she woke up, she confided to Max, her husband, “I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a New Year’s present. What do you think it all means?” “Aha, you’ll know tonight,” answered Max smiling broadly. At midnight, as the New Year was chiming, Max approached Jemima and handed her small package. Delighted and excited she opened it quickly. There in her hand rested a book entitled: “The meaning of dreams”.

THE LECTURE

On New Year’s Eve, Daniel was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left his van in the car park and walked home. As he was wobbling along, he was stopped by a policeman. “What are you doing out here at four o’clock in the morning?” asked the police officer. “I’m on my way to a lecture,” answered Roger. “And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at this time on New Year’s Eve?” enquired the constable sarcastically. “My wife,” slurred Daniel grimly.

THE LECTURE As in many homes on New Year’s Day, my wife and I faced the annual conflict of which was more important – the football games on television, or the dinner itself. To keep peace, I ate dinner with the rest of the family, and even lingered for some pleasant after-dinner conversation before retiring to the family room to turn on the game. Several minutes later, my wife came downstairs and graciously even bought a cold drink for me. She smiled, kissed me on the cheek and asked what the score was. I told her it was the end of the third quarter and that the score was still nothing to nothing. “See?” she said, continuing to smile, “You didn’t miss a thing.”
