or the past 21 years, The Three Mile Café and Store in Bonners Ferry has been serving hot turkey meals to anyone and everyone that stops by on Thanksgiving. Its an annual Thanksgiving tradition that the owner Chuck Quillin started when he saw that there was a need for it. “I had contemplated this for 3 years and finally one day decided that I would do it and let God take care of the details.” Quillin went on to say that “it’s a need and it’s something I can do to make a difference.” When asked how many turkey dinners they serve on any given Thanksgiving Quillin responded with “over four hundred”. With the ability to handle up to six hundred, there’s room for everyone who’s in need. “It’s free and open to everyone who stops in. Turkey, mashed potatoes and all the trimmings. It’s our way of saying thank you to those who have blessed us.” Chuck and his crew start serving meals at 10:30am until 1pm on Thanksgiving. The Three Mile Cafe and Store is located at 2113 Highway 95. To find out more, call 208.267.3513 or visit them at www.ThreeMileCorner.com.

F

ar North Deli nearly went out of business this past summer but at the last minute, Alison Henslee and her partner saved it. “I was home for a visit, heard that the deli was for sale and would close the following Friday,” Henslee said, “I looked at it Saturday, weighed the pros and cons on the train ride Sunday, made an offer on Monday and we bought it on Tuesday.” She then closed her business in Sidney, Montana, packed up her belongings and moved home. “The past year has been an adventure. I quit my job, moved 740 miles away and started a great food trailer business.” she said, “It was something I wanted to try and with an enormous amount of support of my partner and family, I did it.” That experience gave Alison the courage to come home to run a deli. Investing in Bonners Ferry is important to Alison and her family. In May, her son, Wyatt, purchased a coffee stand from the Yount family. Wyatt, a 2008 graduate of BFHS, is living and working in the Bakken oil fields but wants to help encourage a stronger economy back home. “He feels the same way I do, that making a investment here is a positive move because hopefully some day soon, the tide will turn and people will be able to come home to work,” Henslee said. Her daughter, Sarah, operate Mojo’s Coffee for her brother and Alison is their business manager which means, as she puts it, “I’m still Mom, with a job title!” She also makes the breakfast burritos for Mojo’s. Taking over the deli, she hopes to continue building on the strong foundation that previous owner, Michelle Gagnon, had started. “We were lucky to step in to an established business with a strong customer base already in place,” Henslee said, “I’ve simply added my own customer service experience and creativity to step things up a notch.” Far North Deli still offers

the most popular sandwiches, wraps and salads that were on Gagnon’s menu but Alison plans to make a few changes based on customers’ feedback. “For simplicity’s sake, we kept things pretty much the same for now although we’ve strengthened the ‘Build Your Own’ sandwich/wrap/salad list. We’re adding breakfast and kid’s items to the menu as well as healthier selections for those with special dietary needs. Our main goal is to make sure that everything we serve is of the highest quality...and affordable.” Henslee reports. She makes salads and soups from scratch and bakes as much as she can. “Baking is my real passion so we’ll see, the deli may become half bakery, half deli in time!” They also do custom party trays and offer limited catering with plans to expand in the future. Far North Deli is opened Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 3:30pm. The telephone number is the same, 208.267.2255, or you can text your order to 208.610.8806.

All seems fun and frivolity—and yet, there is a serious side, and it is significant.

easier for patients, because now they do not have to travel outof-town to have a CT Scan performed.

The Fry Healthcare Foundation, incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization 18 years ago, in 1994, is a group of volunteers dedicated to collecting goods and services to meet the ongoing medical and human needs of the community thru Boundary Community Hospital. The Fry Healthcare Foundation, including the Festival of Trees has raised in excess of $900,000 for equipment, furnishings and services.

This is the goal of the Fry Healthcare Foundation. They are working to provide facilities, equipment and services for residents of Boundary County. When a community member seeks medical care, the less traveling they have to deal with as they are combating health obstacles, the better. Your participation in the Festival of Trees will not only create a fun and enjoyable evening, but will add to the benefits of additional good healthcare in the local community. Volunteers are welcome. Call Linda Hiatt at 208.610.4175. Ticket sales outlet are Boardwalk Boutique, Teresa’s Family Salon, The Gift Gallery, Sugar Plum Floral, Riverside Auto Center and online at www.boundaryhospital.org.

These items have ranged from musical tapes valued at $15.00 to a handicapped accessible Dodge van valued at over $46,000. One of the larger of the purchases was the CT Scan (Computerized Tomography). HEALTHY LIVING

When it Comes to Preventing the Flu DON’T WAIT TO VACCINATE!

F

lu seasons are unpredictable and can be severe. An average of 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population becomes ill with the flu each year, and more than 200,000 of these individuals are hospitalized due to complications. The flu can be especially serious for children. Each year, an average of 20,000 children under age five are hospitalized as a result of flu complications. Children ages two to 17 are twice as likely to get the flu as adults. Such setbacks resulting from the flu can affect a family’s life, but there are steps you can take to help prevent the flu. Through the “Don’t Wait to Vaccinate” campaign, soccer legend and mom Brandi Chastain encourages families to keep these four tips in mind: • Get an annual flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine each year as it is the single best way to help prevent the flu. • Don’t wait. Every year, it is important to get yourself and your family vaccinated as soon as vaccine is available in your community, which can be as early as August. • Know your options. It’s important to remember the flu vaccine comes in two forms -- the shot or nasal spray. Talk to your doctor about which type is right for you and your eligible family members. • Practice good health habits. Taking everyday preventive steps, like staying away from sick people and washing your hands, helps reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with the flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others. “Flu viruses are constantly changing, and the strains that circulate from season to season may be different,” according

to Anat Feingold, MD, a leading influenza expert and division head of pediatric infectious disease at the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. “Because of this, flu vaccines are updated from one season to the next, which is why the CDC recommends getting vaccinated every year.” Additionally, a person’s immune protection from vaccination declines over time, so annual vaccination helps provide optimal protection. For additional information on the flu and to learn more about the “Don’t Wait to Vaccinate” campaign, visit www.facebook.com/dontwaitvaccinate.

Take Your Multivitamin to Control Diabetes IT CAN MEAN MORE THAN LITTLE PROTECTION AGAINST THE COMMON COLD

F

or people with diabetes, taking a multivitamin every day can mean much more than a little protection against the common cold.

Research is finding that multivitamins can be the first line of defense against many different types of infections, including respiratory infections and influenza. “Once a person with diabetes gets an infection, it’s much harder for them to get rid of it, and it can lead to dire consequences, even death,” says Registered and Certified DietitianNutritionist Debra Spector. “And since some diabetic patients don’t normally respond well to treatment, prevention is key.” Taking a special diabetes multivitamin -- usually found in the diabetes section of a drugstore, not the vitamin section -- allows a diabetic person to be proactive with their health, and avoid nutrient deficiencies that can lead to problems.

The year-long study among 130 patients, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that the incidence of infection was much lower among diabetics who took a multivitamin versus those who did not. Infection occurred in only 17 percent of diabetic patients who took a multivitamin versus the 93 percent who took a placebo. The study also found that regular multivitamin usage reduced the rate of minor urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections in people with diabetes. Because of the nature of the disease, it’s not uncommon for diabetics to experience nutrient deficiencies. Diabetes medications and frequent urination can lead to the loss of vital nutrients that protect the body. “Since there are many health risks that can result from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, I encourage my diabetic patients to find a multivitamin supplement with more potent levels of important nutrients to meet their needs,” says Spector. “It should contain Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), an important nutrient that most ‘regular’ multivitamins do not have. I like Multi-betic Diabetes Multi-Vitamin since it has 23 important nutrients, including ALA, designed to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels, support vision and promote nerve function.” Learn more about Multi-betic and other diabetic products at www.diabeticproducts.com.

SMALL TOWN SHERIFF

In one small rural town the sheriff also fulfilled the role of the town’s veterinarian. One night the phone rang. The sheriff’s wife answered. An agitated voice inquired, “Is your husband there?” “Well, do you need him as the sheriff or the vet?” the wife asked. “Both,” came the reply. “We can’t get our dog’s mouth open and there’s a burglar in it!”

EUROPEAN TOUR

A group of tourists was being guided through an ancient castle in Europe. “This place,” the guide told them, “is 600 years old.” There were appreciative murmurs from the crowd. “Not a stone in it has been touched,” the guide continued, “nothing altered, nothing replaced in all those years.” “Wow,” piped up one woman from the rear of the group. “They must have the same landlord I do.”

CAFETERIA CHOICES

A new high school student examines the food served to him in the cafeteria. “Do I have any choice here?” he asks a cafeteria lady. “Yes, you do. You can eat it or not”

DALMATION

Sunday School helper was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children began discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster. “No,” said another, “he’s just for good luck.” A third child brought the argument to a close. “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrant.”\

THE LUCKY SAUCER

A famous art collector is walking through the city when he notices a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store and he does a double take. He knows that the saucer is extremely old and very valuable, so he walks casually into the store and offers to buy the cat for two dollars. The store owner replies, “I’m sorry, but the cat isn’t for sale. The collector says, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I’ll pay you twenty dollars for that cat.” And the owner says “Sold,” and hands over the cat. The collector continues, “Hey, for the twenty bucks I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer. The cat’s used to it and it’ll save me from having to get a dish.” To which the owner says, “Sorry buddy, but that’s my lucky saucer. So far this week I’ve sold sixty-eight cats.”
