Our communities play a crucial role in shaping our lives and experiences. They provide us with support, friendship, and a sense of belonging that is invaluable, especially during the holidays. Being grateful for our community is an important aspect of celebrating the season. One of the most beautiful aspects of this time of year is the way communities come together to support one another. Whether it’s through charitable acts, volunteering, or simply being there for each other, the holiday spirit tends to bring out the best in people. We see food drives, toy collections, and charity events that exemplify the compassion and generosity of our communities.
inspired articles to help prepare you for the season. If you’re looking for a way to give back and help animals in need during this season of giving, read more about Companions Animal Shelter and their Lights of Love fundraiser. And you’re sure to get into the Christmas season with Post Fallidays Tiny Tree Festival, as well as more wonderful holiday events. Be sure to check out our holiday shopping pages, featuring some great local businesses to visit for all your holiday shopping needs. In a world that can sometimes feel increasingly disconnected, the holidays offer us a chance to reconnect with our roots, our communities, and each other. Let us take a moment this holiday season to be grateful for the incredible network of people who surround us, and to celebrate with an open heart the unity, diversity, and love that our communities bring into our lives. After all, it is this sense of togetherness that makes the holidays truly magical.

The holiday season is a time of reflection, joy and togetherness. It’s a time when we gather with friends and family to celebrate traditions, exchange gifts and create cherished memories. However, it’s also a time to express our gratitude for the wonderful communities that surround us.
The holiday season is upon us, and when the time arrives to start taking care of all of your holiday shopping needs, there’s no reason not to shop local, especially when Silver Lake Mall is in our backyard. Purchased in 2021 by the Knoll family, also owners of the successful Black Sheep Sporting Goods (which can be found at the mall), the mall has since undergone an incredible revival, with every storefront occupied. Looking for a vibrant, dynamic, exciting place to visit, look no further than the Silver Lake Mall. Read more on page 51. Would you like to receive this issue and future issues in your inbox? T
he holiday season is a time of enchantment and camaraderie; a chance to gather with loved ones and revel in the magic of the festivities. Yet, amidst the flurry of extravagant celebrations and opulent feasts, there exists a distinct allure in embracing the art of simplicity. This is where the concept of hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season comes to the forefront—a delightful way to foster genuine connections and create lasting memories. In an age of extravagance, the charm of simplicity shines ever brighter. As the holiday season approaches, the allure of uncomplicated gatherings holds a special place in our hearts. Rather than being consumed by elaborate decorations and menus, we can find fulfillment in cultivating an ambiance of warmth and authenticity. The foundation of a successful small dinner party lies in the choice of guests. By keeping the guest list intimate, consisting of cherished friends and close family members, the stage is set for meaningful conversations and an atmosphere of genuine relaxation. Personalized invitations, whether handwritten notes or carefully crafted digital messages, communicate a sense of significance that resonates with each individual. When it comes to decorating for such an intimate affair, less truly is more. Simplicity extends to the table itself—a tastefully arranged setting with minimal embellishments, a scattering of candles casting a warm glow, and perhaps a touch of verdant foliage to infuse a hint of nature’s elegance. The aim is not to overwhelm the senses but to create an environment where heartfelt interactions take center stage. Culinary artistry can find its zenith in the simplicity of a thoughtfully curated menu. While the allure of an elaborate banquet looms large, a well-prepared selection of dishes can leave a more indelible mark. A seasonal menu, carefully crafted from the freshest ingredients, can evoke the essence of the holidays. A succulent roast as the centerpiece, flanked by a selection of thoughtfully chosen sides and crowned with a delectable dessert, can become a symphony of flavors that resonates in the memory.
LESS truly is MORE. 22

from ordinary to extraordinary. A PERSONAL TOUCH CAN ELEVATE THE EVENING
A personal touch can elevate the evening from ordinary to extraordinary. Place cards handwritten with care, sharing anecdotes about the dishes served, or even presenting guests with a small token of appreciation to take home. Weaving these gestures into the fabric of the gathering adds depth to the experience. It’s the attention to detail and the infusion of your personality that make the occasion truly unforgettable. Introducing interactive elements into the evening can transform it into a tapestry of shared joy. Engaging games, collaborative DIY projects or even a storytelling session can weave bonds that extend beyond the event itself. These activities unlock a realm of shared experiences, fostering connections that linger long after the evening draws to a close. Hosting a small dinner party during the holiday season is a finely orchestrated art. It begins with meticulous planning, 24
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023
outlining the guest list and dispatching invitations in advance. This groundwork enables you to focus on the nuances that elevate the evening from ordinary to exceptional, ensuring every aspect is infused with thoughtfulness and intention. Central to the art of hosting is the menu. Instead of inundating yourself with an exhaustive spread, curate a selection of dishes that harmonize with one another and encapsulate the essence of the season. Accommodating dietary preferences and restrictions ensures everyone feels catered to and cherished. Timing is a silent conductor in this symphony of flavors and interactions. A well-structured timeline, guiding the presentation of each dish and the progression of the evening, maintains a harmonious flow. This foresight prevents lastminute rushes, allowing you to bask in the company of your guests and partake in the magic you’ve conjured.

Conversations are the threads that weave the evening into a vibrant tapestry. Carefully configuring the seating arrangement can spark dynamic exchanges, transcending small talk and delving into realms of shared interests and revelations. Mixing personalities ensures a kaleidoscope of discussions, enlivening the atmosphere. As the host, your demeanor paints the backdrop against which the gathering unfolds. Welcoming guests with warmth, facilitating introductions, and cultivating an environment of comfort and inclusion sets the tone. A gracious host makes every guest feel like an integral part of the celebration. While planning is imperative, embracing spontaneity injects an element of enchantment. Allowing the evening to evolve organically and adapting to unforeseen turns can lead to delightful surprises. The joy lies in observing connections deepen, witnessing laughter and camaraderie flourish in unexpected directions. As the holiday season beckons, consider the enchantment of simplicity in your celebrations. The art of a small dinner party beckons—a canvas upon which cherished memories are painted, connections forged, and the essence of togetherness celebrated. By thoughtfully curating your guest list, tending to décor and culinary delights, and imbuing each element with your personal touch, you master the art of hosting a small dinner party that resonates long after the festivities fade. Amid a world enamored with opulence, the elegance of simplicity shines bright in these moments of shared joy and authentic communion.

The company’s core values are at the forefront of every decision made, and it has paid off! “T
here are things I love about teaching but, hands down, it is all about being with the kids,” says Tara Gray, fifthgrade teacher at Ramsey Magnet School of Science. “They are funny, honest, and they constantly challenge my ‘grown up’ perspective.” Tara gathered countless memories during her 16 years as a teacher.
Her once-sleepy class quickly jumped up to begin the search-and-rescue mission. “Thankfully, after every nook and cranny in the room was searched, we found little ‘other’ sitting right by the same pencil box he was supposed to be resting in,” Tara recalls. “I had an empty aquarium that we put both snakes in for the rest of the day, so they were safe until we released them back into the wild before the last bell.
“Just the other day a student asked, ‘Who discovered the decimal?’ which led to, ‘Was the decimal discovered or invented?’” Tara says. “That led to, ‘Who decided decimals were a good idea, and do we really need them?’ These were real questions that students really asked.”
“This memory is significant because it so aptly describes teaching. Kids are amazing thinkers, learners and problem-solvers, but they are also kids. Sometimes they, and we, need a snake emergency to shake things up and remind us that life is fun and unpredictable.”
Tara says that is what learning should feel like all the time. “I have never thought so deeply about a little dot before!”
Tara also loves that her profession can reach beyond the classroom and into the community. “Everyone in our community has something to offer to these kiddos, and we love bringing in architects, nurses, opera singers, home gardeners or unicyclists,” she says. “As teachers, we are amazing at finding unexpected academic connections and turning a fun show-and-tell into a hands-on lesson. I would encourage community members to call and see how they can get involved.”
One of her favorite memories as a teacher happened on a warm spring day during one of her first years of teaching the fifth grade. Students had just returned from recess, “hot, sweaty, and now drowsy, because it was just after lunch,” she remembers. “I knew getting these students engaged was going to take a lot of effort.” But things quickly became interesting when she heard a student yell, “Oh, no. I can’t find the other snake.”

“Immediately, I tried to figure out which ‘first’ snake he was talking about,” Tara says. “After I got him to calm down and stop yelling about the ‘other snake,’ he finally explained that at recess he had found two small snakes and put them in his pencil box. He had wanted to keep them safe, so he didn’t close his pencil box—then went to take a peek and discovered that one of the snakes had disappeared.”

For every student, Tara hopes to have planted two life lessons in their heart by the time they leave her classroom. “First, I want every single student to know that they are uniquely valuable. It is not their success or failures that define their worth,” she says. “Secondly, and emphatically, I want students to know learning is not about getting everything right. Embrace mistakes. Try things that are too hard for you. Challenge yourself in areas that you know you will fail at first—and then watch and see what amazing things happen!”

“I
have played competitive club volleyball since the sixth grade and never looked back,” Alexa Stavros says. Now a senior at Coeur d’Alene High School, Alexa says she has never fallen in love with a sport the way she fell in love with volleyball. “Even though I started playing volleyball later than most, I was able to learn quickly through great coaching and extra work outside of practices. This helped me compete at the varsity level since my sophomore year,” Alexa says. “I now play volleyball year-round between school, club and the beach.” She has found volleyball’s “mental game” to be the most challenging aspect of the sport. “As a perfectionist, it took giving myself grace, and understanding that the game is not perfect, to overcome this,” she says. “As the cliché goes, ‘We learn best from our mistakes.’” She goes on to share, “It was also challenging coming back from a two-month-long injury this last club season. I had to relearn the movements of the game, the speed of the game,
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023
Alexa says while her year-round volleyball schedule keeps her busy and active, she’s found a good balance between her athletic and academic life. “I am enrolled in my second year of North Idaho College, while maintaining a GPA of 3.75,” she says. After graduating high school, she plans to continue her sport in collegiate volleyball, while pursuing a career in the medical field. “I am interested in becoming a physician’s assistant or a nurse practitioner,” Alexa says. “Both of these careers interest me because I would love to help people in the same way medical professionals have helped me and my family.” Alexa says playing team sports taught her commitment. “Commitment is the foundation of a good team,” she says. “I learned that I have to be 100 percent committed to my work in order to be successful for myself and my team.” Playing volleyball year-round has allowed her teammates to become family. “We go through the ups and downs, the wins and losses, and life together,” she says. “I’ve had the opportunity to learn and compete with many of the same girls since I started playing volleyball, and that’s something I will never take for granted. That’s what has made my senior year so special: my teammates.”

t 17, Lake City High School senior and star swimmer Ben Linford has achieved notable success as an athlete, academic and musician. “In athletics, I have secured 2nd and 3rd place for our boys’ swim team at the state level,” Ben says. “For two consecutive years, I earned 3rd place in the 100 backstroke, in addition to achieving top-8 finishes in my other events.” His dedication has led him to numerous Western Zone championships. “I’m honored to have been nominated for the Idaho Hall of Fame in swimming,” he says. Ben serves as captain for both the high school team and local swim team. “Coeur d’Alene Swim Team (C.A.S.T) has given me leadership opportunities and a chance to serve others,” he says. “One lesson I’ve learned from my sport is, as coach Shelly says, ‘You’ve gotta want it.’ In order to be successful as an individual, as well as a team, you have to be more motivated and more driven to win than your opponents,” Ben says. “You can train longer and harder than other teams, but if you don’t want it as much
Ben says sports have also helped him hone his mental focus. “Oftentimes, I got overly nervous about my races and hyper-focused on the ‘What if?’ With the help of my amazing parents, I was able to get over this hurdle and focus on my races from a different perspective, allowing me to improve mentally and physically.” Ben is in the top five students in his class, holding a 4.2 GPA. “Beyond the classroom, I co-founded and preside over a study club at our school, while holding membership in the National Honor Society,” he says. He passed three AP tests for college credit, scored 94th percentile on the SAT, and has earned the Idaho Top Scholar award. In music, he proudly serves as the orchestra’s president and occupies the first chair position as a cellist. Upon graduation, Ben plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He plans to join the swim club team there and study engineering with an emphasis in aerospace engineering. “I’m interested in working with math, science and technology in order to design, create and improve mechanical designs, specifically on spacecraft,” Ben says. Ben says his favorite part about his sport is the team environment. “I love being able to support my teammates in achieving their own goals and see them improve as athletes and people. With that, making memories with friends and enjoying the relationships I have built is more rewarding than any medal that I could receive.”

MORE THAN A SHELTER Companions Animal Center of fers complete support for local animals and pet owners
42
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023
“Companions Animal Center’s mission is to provide quality, humane care, rehabilitation, adoption, and education for the good of the animals and their companions in our community,” says Vicky Nelson, director of development. CAC reports they rescue and adopt more than 2,000 pets each year. Their many services include a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats and dogs, vaccine clinic, pet licensing, food pantry program that supports pet owners through financial hardship, and much more. The CAC is also 100 percent community funded. “We do not receive any government funding or tax dollars, or funds from any other animal organization,” Vicky says. “We rely solely on the generosity of our local businesses and community members.” The shelter’s no-kill philosophy means it never has to place a time limit on how long a pet can stay there. The CAC reports they have a 95 percent live-save rate, one of the highest in the nation for a shelter of its scope and size.
“CAC practices the no-kill philosophy and strives to help every animal have a long and happy life with a loving family,” Vicky says. “Surrenders, strays and animals transferred in from high-kill shelters are cared for until a permanent home can be found. She feels for the animals that await adoption at CAC. She says she always had a “hound-type dog” when she was growing up, and “whenever one of those howling animals comes into the shelter, my heart just breaks—although, I know they’re better at CAC than where they came from.” For local pet owners facing hardship, the CAC offers support in many forms. “Low-income pet owners can take advantage of our pet food bank; community members can bring their pets to receive our low-cost spay/neuter/vaccine services; and community members experiencing life-threatening or life-changing events have a place to keep their pets safe,” says Vicky. Animal adoption is made easy at the Companions Animal Center— their website is updated regularly with the available dogs, cats and small animals who are ready to find their forever homes. Each animal’s description comes with photos, key information and customized tips for how to best care for each pet. As an organization that relies on donations to support its programs and services, community support is critical to the CAC, and there are many ways to give.

“CAC PRACTICES THE NO-KILL PHILOSOPHY AND STRIVES TO HELP EVERY ANIMAL HAVE A LONG AND HAPPY LIFE WITH A
LOVING FAMILY,” Located on Third Street in downtown Coeur d’Alene, the Companions Animal Center Thrift Store is a major revenue source for the CAC’s shelter operations. All proceeds from the store directly support CAC in its efforts to ensure the humane treatment of animals and to find forever homes for pets in the local community. Other ways to support the CAC include one-time or monthly recurring donations, third-party fundraising, and supplying items on the CAC’s rotating wish list. Throughout November and December, the Companions Animal Center’s Light of Love event offers the chance to support the CAC during the holiday season. “Lights of Love began over 10 years ago,” Vicky says. “One dozen artificial trees are set up in our local Silver Lake Mall. Community members participate by purchasing a ‘light’ in memory of (white light) or in honor of (colored light) a pet.” Tags are then printed with the participant’s last name and their pet’s name and are hung on the trees, she says, resulting in thousands of tags adorning the trees by Christmastime. “Our community comes to the mall in search of their tag,” she adds. The funds raised from Lights of Love help Companions Animal Center care for almost 100 animals that are in need of medical care, shelter, and a forever home. “One of our biggest expenses is medical care,” Vicky states. “Unfortunately, community members cannot walk into a store to purchase what is needed. We always request monetary donations to offset those costs. People can specifically request that their donation go to our Hearts of Gold Medical Fund.” The Hearts of Gold Medical Fund provides medical care for animals who become injured or attacked outside their home, providing veterinary care, rabies shots and antibiotics. Donations in any form are greatly appreciated by the CAC. “We are so fortunate to have such a caring community and look forward to another 40 years of finding the unwanted and neglected animals loving, forever homes,” Vicky says. Visit the CAC’s website at CompanionsAnimalCenter.org for more information on how to support the CAC or adopt your new furry companion.

A SPECIAL DEPUTY t 12 years old, Edward Vawter has undergone over 20 surgeries and has achieved his lifelong dream of becoming a deputy.
impressed by his constant display of courage and positive energy amidst challenging circumstances.
Edward has Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, a rare congenital condition affecting the development of the joints, bones and muscle, particularly in the mouth, face, hands and feet. The condition can often restrict movement and affect a child’s physical development.
Also known as “whistling face syndrome,” Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is often characterized by abnormalities known as contractures, according to the National Library of Medicine, resulting from the permanent tightening of muscles, skin, tendons and surrounding tissues. It can affect speech, swallowing, spinal curvature and more.
Through everything Edward has experienced, including numerous surgeries and the use of a walker, he is often described as strong, positive and vibrant. Edward often credits prayer and a relationship with God as his source of strength and courage. He also has a strong local support system at the Kootenai County Sheriff ’s Office, who have joined him in prayer and have made him a Special Deputy in a special moment at a local law enforcement gathering held at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. “In April, Edward Vawter’s 12th birthday wish was to meet Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris. The Sheriff arrived at the birthday party to surprise him, and he presented him with a lapel pin,” the Kootenai County Sheriff ’s office reported. “That meant so much to Edward because he has always wanted to be a police officer!” Edward remained close with the sheriff, creating a relationship of ongoing support. The office reported that before his spinal fusion surgery in Colorado in the summer of 2023, Edward paid them a visit and was surrounded in prayer. Sheriff Norris has described Edward as part of their extended family,
Edward has shared that his physical disabilities have often kept him from joining in play or participating in many of the activities enjoyed by children his age. Even still, he remains an inspiring source of faith and courage to those across all ages. Edward’s positivity reached beyond Kootenai County when he visited Denver for his spinal fusion surgery. The Arapahoe County Sheriff ’s Office supported Edward through his recovery, receiving a special thank you from the Kootenai County Sheriff ’s Office on social media. “Since Edward is in Colorado, we reached out to our friends at the Arapahoe Sheriff ’s Office, who were more than happy to help us support Edward through his recovery,” the Kootenai County Sheriff ’s office wrote. “... the Arapahoe Sheriff ’s Office Patrol Captain Chris Gulli visited Edward at the Children’s hospital in Aurora. The two spent time together, and then Edward received a K-9 shirt, a K-9 stuffed dog and many other gifts.” They shared that the surprise visit really helped Edward get through a tough day. With the support of his community, family and faith, Edward is sure to continue to spread his contagious positivity across Kootenai County and beyond. A Vibrant, Dynamic, Exciting Place to Visit It’s time to explore Coeur d’Alene’s Silver Lake Mall by JILLIAN CHANDLER
L
ifelong residents of the Inland Northwest, the Knoll family, who have operated retail stores throughout the Northwest for many years, purchased Silver Lake Mall in early 2021. They are best known as the owners of Black Sheep Sporting Goods, which was founded by Dave Knoll. Dave got his start in the sporting goods business stocking shelves for his uncle at the White Elephant in Spokane, Washington, as a teenager. Looking to venture out on his own, he founded the successful Black Sheep in Coeur d’Alene in 1975, which is now in its 48th year of operation—and can be found in Silver Lake Mall. Over the past two-and-a-half years, since taking ownership of Silver Lake Mall, the space has undergone an incredible revival. It is now a vibrant, dynamic, exciting place to visit. “The mall’s transformation is truly remarkable, shifting from a near-empty shopping mall to a bustling and lively destination with every storefront now fully occupied,” shares Brian Knoll, general manager, and son of Dave and Barb Knoll. Existing retail storefronts in the mall include JoAnn Fabric and Craft, Macy’s, Macy’s for Men, Merle Norman, Nail Trix, The Nail Lounge, Planet Fitness, and Strategy and Games. Longer standing tenants include Claire’s, Harry Ritchie’s Jewelers, and Bath and Body Works, who have been in the shopping mall since it opened in 1989. New storefront additions include Belle Niche, Memory Lane Gems, Black Sheep Sporting Goods, and additional satellite stores by Black Sheep including, Life Is Good, Columbia, Browning, 5.11, Grunt Style, Old Guy’s Rule, Wrangler, Lazy One, Drinkware featuring Yeti and Hydro Flask, Under Armour, Camo Land, Carhartt, Carhartt for Women and Children, Ariat, Spin Em’, Kimes Ranch, Winter World / Water World (Seasonal Sports), Macadamia Coffee, and an expanded selection of Knives and Optics occupying their own storefront. Food options in the food court have been added as well, including PJ’s Corner Grill, Good n’ Baked, and coming soon Sierra Ranch Chili. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, along with food trucks including Oh BabyTex Mex BBQ and Pow’Waw, can be found in the Silver Lake Mall parking lot. “We believe the future of retail is about experiences," Brian says. “One thing that the pandemic taught us is that people are social beings, and as social beings, they crave tangible experiences, preferring to engage with life in a physical, sensory manner rather than through the confines of a computer screen. We have been working hard to create a shopping experience worth putting down the laptop and getting off the couch.”
The Knolls have always tried to provide their customers with the best selection, the best price, and the best advice. “Our relocation to the mall has opened up a world of possibilities. We now offer our customers an expanded extensive range of their favorite brands, rivaling what they might discover online, all at remarkably competitive prices,” Brian notes. “What truly sets us apart, aside from selection and price, is the level of personalized service and expert advice you'll receive from our knowledgeable team.” Brian adds, “Being a part of the mall’s revival has been incredibly rewarding. Our local community has shown unwavering support and a genuine desire to see Silver Lake thrive. This shopping center holds a cherished spot in their hearts, filled with fond memories. Helping people create new memories has been the most rewarding part of this endeavor.” This holiday season—or any season for that matter—make a trip to Silver Lake Mall to see the transformation it's undergone thanks to the Knolls and their award-winning team. And with the holiday season upon us, Santa will be making his way to the mall, as well as two more seasonal storefronts with See’s Candies and Hickory Farms.

n the pursuit of a healthier life, we often focus on the physical aspects—regular exercise, balanced diets and sufficient sleep. However, a growing body of research has revealed that happiness, that elusive and subjective emotion, plays a pivotal role in our overall wellbeing. Beyond its emotional benefits, happiness has been scientifically linked to improved cardiovascular health, healthier eating patterns and exercise habits, a stronger immune system, and more. This intriguing connection underscores the importance of nurturing our emotional state alongside our physical efforts.
and cardiovascular health. When we experience happiness, our bodies release hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, which promote relaxation and lower stress levels. Reduced stress directly translates to a healthier heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. A study conducted by the American Heart Association found that individuals with positive emotional well-being were less likely to develop coronary heart disease. This highlights the tangible impact of happiness on our cardiovascular system and emphasizes the need to prioritize our emotional health.
It might come as a surprise, but a joyful heart isn’t just a metaphor. Scientific studies have established a strong link between happiness

discovered a significant correlation between happiness and dietary habits. When we’re happy, we’re more likely to opt for nutritious foods that nourish our bodies. On the flip side, negative emotions often lead to comfort eating, where unhealthy, high-calorie foods are consumed as a coping mechanism. By fostering happiness, we can consciously influence our food choices, contributing to long-term health. Moreover, the connection between happiness and exercise is a reinforcing cycle. Engaging in physical activities releases endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good” hormones. These endorphins induce a sense of happiness and euphoria, promoting regular exercise. Simultaneously, when we’re happy, we’re more inclined to engage in physical activities that we enjoy, leading to increased motivation and adherence to workout routines. This synergy between happiness and exercise underscores the importance of integrating joyful movement into our lives. In the era of health concerns, bolstering our immune system has never been more crucial. Emerging research reveals that happiness has a direct impact on the immune system’s efficacy. The stress hormone cortisol, which can weaken the immune response, is regulated by positive emotions. When we’re happy, cortisol levels decrease, allowing our immune system to function optimally. Furthermore, studies have shown that happier individuals tend to recover faster from illnesses and have a reduced susceptibility to infections. This connection serves as a compelling reason to prioritize activities that bring us joy and cultivate an emotionally positive environment. Delving deeper into the physiological realm, happiness has been linked to cellular health and longevity. Telomeres, the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes, play a crucial role in cellular aging. Shortened telomeres are associated with age-related diseases and a decreased lifespan. Remarkably, a study conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, found that individuals reporting higher levels of happiness had longer telomeres. This suggests that happiness may contribute to slowing down the cellular aging process, leading to a longer and healthier life. Stress is an omnipresent adversary in today’s fast-paced world, taking a toll on both our mental and physical health. Enter happiness as a potent stress buffer. When we’re happy, our bodies

release chemicals that counteract the effects of stress hormones. This not only helps us manage stress more effectively but also translates to a healthier body. Chronic stress is linked to a plethora of health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, compromised immune function and mental health disorders. By cultivating happiness, we equip ourselves with a powerful tool to mitigate the harmful effects of stress. The interplay between happiness and physical health is undeniably intricate. As we strive for a healthier life, we must recognize the symbiotic relationship between emotional and physical well-being. Nurturing happiness involves a multifaceted approach that includes practicing gratitude, nurturing social connections, engaging in regular exercise and pursuing activities that spark joy. By integrating these practices into our lives, we set the stage for a harmonious coexistence of happiness and health. It is plain to see that the scientific evidence is resounding: Happiness is far more than a fleeting emotion. It’s a powerful force that directly influences our physical well-being. From enhancing cardiovascular health and encouraging healthier eating patterns to boosting the immune system and promoting cellular health, happiness is an essential ingredient for a healthier life. As we navigate the complexities of modern existence, let us remember that fostering happiness is not only a pursuit of emotional fulfillment but also a proactive investment in our long-term health.

fter moving to the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) in 2016, North Idaho College (NIC) men’s and women’s basketball teams are back competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) for the 20232024 season. The NJCAA is a national athletic conference that consists of more than 500 member schools across the United States, while the NWAC is a regional athletic conference that features more than 30 schools across the Pacific Northwest. NIC returns to Region 18 of the NJCAA, which features teams like the 2022 NJCAA men’s basketball championship runner-up Salt Lake Community College and longtime NIC rival College of Southern Idaho (CSI). “It’s arguably one of the top basketball conferences in the country with the likes of CSI, Salt Lake and Snow College,” NIC’s men’s basketball Head Coach Corey Symons said. “I am looking forward to seeing how we compete against them, and we’re working our tails off to beat them.” NIC men’s basketball posted a 9-3 record against NJCAA opponents since the 20172018 season, and the women’s team holds a 4-9 record in that same span. “I’m looking forward to bringing back the rivalry games that had gone on for 30-

plus years,” Symons said. “Our Athletic Department at NIC has national talent, and I can’t wait to play the best teams in the country and try to get our program back on that list.” In the past, NIC’s largest rivalry was with College of Southern Idaho, and those matchups were frequently met with big-time crowds, Symons said. NIC men’s and women’s basketball face off against CSI Saturday, February 3. Nate Covill, NIC’s head women’s basketball coach, also said that he’s excited to see how his team competes on the national stage. “I believe the most important thing our staff and I are interested in seeing is just how good we can become from the start of the year to the end of the year,” Covill said. “Watching a team improve, grow and gel as a single unit and not a bunch of individuals is one of the best feelings as a coach.” This is the first year of NIC’s full transition to the NJCAA. All NIC Athletics will compete in the NJCAA beginning in the 2024-2025 season. For up-to-date information about NIC Athletics including news, schedules and season tickets, visit NICAthletics.com.

he holiday season is a time of joy, celebration and togetherness. However, for many, it can also bring along a considerable amount of stress. And with stress often comes the tendency to overeat, leading to a vicious cycle of unhealthy habits. Now let’s explore the link between holiday stress and overeating and some valuable tips to overcome stress eating so you can enjoy a healthier, more balanced holiday season.
Unraveling the Connection Between Stress and Overeating Holiday stress, whether it's due to gift shopping, hosting gatherings or financial strain, can trigger emotional responses that lead to overeating. Stress activates the body's fight-or-flight response, causing hormonal changes that often lead to cravings for comfort foods high in sugar, fat and calories. Understanding this connection is the first step toward regaining control over your eating habits.
Overcoming Stress Eating Practice mindfulness when eating. Pay attention to the taste, texture and aroma of your food. This helps you become more attuned to your body's hunger and fullness cues, preventing overeating out of stress. Discover alternative stress-relief techniques like deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or taking a walk. Engaging in these activities can help you manage stress without resorting to overeating. Also be sure to opt for nutrient-dense foods that nourish your body and provide sustained energy. Incorporate whole grains, lean proteins, fruits and vegetables into your meals, which can positively impact your mood and reduce the urge to stress eat. Before attending holiday gatherings or events, eat a balanced meal or snack. This can prevent arriving hungry and overindulging in high-calorie treats due to stress or emotional triggers. And don’t forget to stay hydrated. Often, our bodies mistake thirst for hunger. Drinking enough water throughout the day can help curb unnecessary snacking caused by stress-related cravings.

The Role of Emotional Eating During the Holidays Emotional eating, a coping mechanism for dealing with stress, can become particularly pronounced during the holiday season. People tend to turn to food as a source of comfort or distraction, leading to mindless eating and a temporary escape from their worries. Recognizing the signs of emotional eating and finding healthier outlets for managing stress is essential for breaking the cycle.
Creating a Supportive Environment During the holiday season, it's crucial to surround yourself with a supportive network of family and friends. Communicate your feelings and stressors with them, allowing them to provide encouragement and understanding. Sharing your journey to overcome stress eating can foster a sense of accountability and motivation.
Seeking Professional Help If stress eating becomes a persistent issue that interferes with your wellbeing, seeking professional help is a wise step. Registered dietitians, therapists and counselors can offer personalized guidance and strategies to manage stress and develop a healthier relationship with food. Remember, overcoming stress eating is a gradual process, and seeking assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness. The holiday season's stress can indeed trigger overeating, but armed with the right knowledge and strategies, you can regain control over your eating habits. By understanding the connection between stress and overeating, practicing mindfulness, adopting stress-relief techniques, making smart food choices, building a support system and seeking professional help when needed, you can pave the way for a healthier, happier holiday season and beyond.

A
t Pure Medical Spa, we understand how important it is to look and feel your best. That’s why we offer our clients only the best in aesthetic treatments—like Broadband Light (BBL) therapy. What is BBL? It’s a treatment that uses intense pulsed light from the Sciton platform to treat issues such as age spots, sun damage and other skin discolorations. BBL treatments can even help reduce wrinkles, lift sagging skin and improve your overall complexion. At Pure Medical Spa, we want you to achieve the best results possible with your BBL treatments. That’s why our certified experts use the highest quality Sciton equipment available—ensuring that your skin is treated safely and effectively. Broadband Light (BBL) therapy is a skin treatment that uses
74
COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL november/december 2023
intense pulsed light to target various skin conditions. A pilot study titled “Rejuvenation of Gene Expression Pattern of Aged Human Skin by Broadband Light Treatment,” led by Anne Lynn S. Chang and Patrick H. Bitter, provides an interesting insight into the effectiveness of BBL therapy. The study indicates that BBL treatments can rejuvenate the gene expression pattern of aged human skin to resemble young skin. It was found that over 1,000 genes became “rejuvenated,” meaning their expression patterns changed to be more like those of younger skin. The principle behind this is that the light energy generated by BBL creates heat in specific areas of
the skin, which then stimulates skin cells to regenerate. This process helps to reduce the appearance of aging and sun damage, and also improves the skin’s texture, elasticity and firmness. BBL are a promising method for skin rejuvenation, providing a non-invasive way to potentially reverse the signs of aging at a molecular level. When considering a BBL treatment, it’s important to understand what to expect from the procedure and how to make sure you get the best outcome. The first step is to schedule an initial consultation with Pure Medical Spa’s certified professionals. During your appointment, our expert will discuss your goals and determine whether BBL treatments are the right choice for you. Together, you’ll decide which areas of your skin should be treated and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to meet your needs. When it’s time for your treatment, you can expect the process to take anywhere from a half-hour to an hour. During that time, our experts will use Sciton’s BBL technology to target and treat the designated areas with bursts of pulsed light. It is normal to experience some discomfort during this process, but our team will do their best to make sure you are as comfortable as possible.
When searching for an aesthetic provider, make sure you choose one that offers the latest in technology.
Once your treatment is complete, you’ll be given after-care instructions to follow, and you may experience some redness or swelling of the treated areas. That typically goes away within a few days, but you should keep in mind that it can take up to a month for your skin to heal. When searching for an aesthetic provider, make sure you choose one that offers the latest in technology. With Pure Medical Spa, you’ll get the most advanced Sciton treatments available and experience all the benefits of BBL: smoother skin tone, reduced sunspots, improved texture and minimized wrinkles. We’re proud to be your preferred provider for Broadband Light treatments.

Embrace the allure of old Hollywood with glamorous waves that exude confidence and sophistication.
T
he holiday season is upon us, and with it comes a whirlwind of parties, gatherings and festivities. As you deck the halls and spread joy, why not also adorn yourself with stunning hairstyles that capture the spirit of the season? Whether you’re attending an elegant soiree or a casual get-together, we’ve curated a list of the best hairdos to make you the star of every holiday event. When it comes to timeless elegance, the chignon takes the spotlight. This sophisticated updo exudes class and complements any formal holiday event. To achieve the perfect chignon, start by creating a sleek low bun at the nape of your neck. Gently loosen a few strands to frame your face and soften the look. For an extra touch of glamour, adorn your chignon with jeweled pins or a festive hair accessory.
Capture the magic of the season with a braided crown that adds a touch of whimsical romance to your holiday ensemble. This ethereal hairstyle works wonders for both long and medium-length hair. Begin by parting your hair down the center, then create two braids— one on each side of your head. Cross the braids over the top of your head and secure them with bobby pins, forming a crown-like effect. Loosen the braids slightly to achieve a soft and dreamy look that pairs beautifully with any holiday outfit. Embrace the allure of old Hollywood with glamorous waves that exude confidence and sophistication. Perfect for a glamorous holiday gala, these waves are achieved by using a curling iron to create soft curls that flow away from your face. Brush out the curls gently to achieve the iconic Hollywood wave pattern. To ensure your waves stay in place all night, use a strong-hold hairspray and consider adding a decorative hairpin for an added touch of sparkle. Inject some festive fun into your holiday look with a glitter ponytail that’s perfect for more casual gatherings. Start by styling your hair into a high or mid-height ponytail and securing it with an elastic. Then, take a fine brush and apply hair gel or hairspray along the length of the ponytail. Gently sprinkle glitter onto the product, ensuring an even distribution. This playful and eye-catching style is sure to make you the life of the party.

For those who appreciate a minimalist and modern look, the sleek bob is a sophisticated choice. This style is characterized by its clean lines and sharp angles, making it perfect for both formal and semi-formal holiday events. Whether you have a short bob or long bob (lob), ensure your hair is straight and sleek. Use a straightening iron and finishing serum to achieve a polished appearance that exudes confidence and chic charm. If you’re aiming for a hairstyle that strikes the perfect balance between elegance and casual charm, the half-up half-down twists are an ideal choice. Simply take sections of hair from both sides of your head and twist them toward the back, securing them together with bobby pins. Leave the rest of your hair flowing freely for an effortlessly beautiful look that’s perfect for holiday brunches or daytime gatherings. For an enchanting and regal appearance, the crown braid bun reigns supreme. This hairstyle seamlessly combines a crown braid with a low bun to create a look that’s fit for a queen. Start by creating a Dutch braid along your hairline, encircling the top of your head like a crown. Gather the remaining hair into a low bun at the nape of your neck. This intricate yet stunning style will have you feeling like royalty at any holiday event. Put a holiday twist on the classic fishtail braid by incorporating festive elements like ribbon or tinsel. This versatile braid can be styled into a side-swept fishtail or a centered one, depending on your preference. To add a touch of holiday flair, intertwine a strand of ribbon or tinsel with the sections of your braid. The result is a captivating hairstyle that captures the spirit of the season. The holiday season is a wonderful time to experiment with hairstyles that reflect the joy and merriment of the festivities. From classic elegance to modern chic, there’s a hairdo for every occasion. Whether you’re attending a formal gala or a cozy gathering with loved ones, these hairstyles are sure to make you shine brighter than the holiday lights. So, go ahead and embrace the spirit of the season by adorning yourself with these glamorous and enchanting hairdos.

FAIRBANKS Aurora Season in Alaska is a magical time when tourism slows down and serenity reigns in the backcountry. There is no better way to experience this than on the Aurora Winter Train, which travels between Anchorage and Fairbanks. For the ultimate experience, fly into Anchorage and spend a day or two. Board the Aurora Winter Train on a full day trip to Fairbanks. Along the way, enjoy the winter wonderland of Alaska’s backcountry. Guests will enjoy the comfort of a warm train car with comfy seats and picture windows to view the incredible scenery. Keep an eye out for wildlife, which are easier to spot against the pristine white snow. Riding the rails along the Susitna River is even more spectacular on a clear day when it is possible to see Mount Denali. Arrive in Fairbanks and spend a few days to experience the Aurora Borealis. Alaska Airlines offers flights from Fairbanks and Anchorage to Seattle with easy connections to other cities. Pro Tip: If you don’t want to invest in heavy winter gear for outdoor activities, many outfitters in both cities offer clothing and boot rentals.

STAY
The Marriott Anchorage Downtown is a perfect base hotel for your time visiting Alaska’s capital city. The location is so convenient, and guests can walk to the Alaska Railroad Depot or the bus station. It is also easy to walk to shops and restaurants. Enjoy city and mountain views from the hotel. The hotel underwent a complete renovation with vibrant colors that really brighten things up during winter’s extremely short daylight hours. This full-service hotel has a lovely indoor pool and fitness center. If you want to see the Aurora Borealis, then the Chena Hot Springs Resort is the place to stay. It is a scenic 60-mile drive from downtown Fairbanks to the very end of the Chena Hot Springs Road. Lodging ranges from dry cabins (no running water and outdoor restrooms) to nice hotel rooms. On-site is a pool house with access to the outdoor hot springs and an Ice Museum constructed of ice. Pro Tip: Book a shuttle through the Chena Hot Springs Resort, and it will pick you up from the train station. MARRIOTT ANCHORAGE DOWNTOWN Marriott.com CHENA HOT SPRINGS RESORT ChenaHotSprings.com
EAT
Alaska food is hearty but also has an emphasis on fresh seafood. For local color, try Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse in downtown Anchorage. It is super fun—and the food is really good. Order Humpy’s Famous Halibut and Chips paired with a local brew and discover why they’re famous. Gwennie’s Old Alaska Restaurant has been around for more than 50 years. Visit for a hearty breakfast and the interesting décor that is like walking into a time capsule. Dining is limited at the Chena Hot Springs Resort to the snack bar and the Chena Hot Springs Restaurant. It is famed for its “Chena Fresh” salads that locals drive from Fairbanks to enjoy. Lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and herbs are grown fresh in the on-site greenhouse and state-of-the-art hydroponic garden. This super fresh salad is part of the resort’s commitment to a sustainable community and renewable energy. The dining room is cozy with a roaring fire in the stone fireplace. The menu is surprisingly extensive and offers everything from steaks and fresh seafood to curries.

DO
Downtown Anchorage is very walkable, and you can access quite a few attractions right from the Marriott Anchorage Downtown. A must see is the Alaska Museum, an eclectic place with both art, culture and history. Allow plenty of time to tour this gem of a museum. Alaskans get outside in the winter and visitors should too. Visit the Downtown Bicycle Rental and take out a fat tire bicycle on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Access the trail not far from the shop and bike 11 miles on Anchorage’s most popular trail. On a clear day you may even see Mount Denali. Interpretive signs along the trail highlight the natural and human history of the area. There is so much to do at the Chena Hot Springs Resort during the winter. A must do is the Aurora Viewing Tour. It is a 30-minute drive from the resort to Charlie Dome. Hang out in a Mongolian yurt until the Northern Lights appear. Warm clothing is available if you don’t have your own. The Geothermal Energy and Greenhouse tour is fascinating. Guests can also enjoy quintessential Alaskan activities such as dog sledding or ice fishing. The Activities Center is the hub at the resort for booking tours and activities. This pumpkin pumpkin cheesecake cheesecake This is sure to be a hit at your your is sure to be a hit at Thanksgiving and and Christmas Christmas Thanksgiving gatherings. Enjoy! Enjoy! gatherings.
For the topping: 1 cup sour cream 2 tbsp. granulated sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Method • Preheat your oven to 325°F. • In a mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, sugar and melted butter. Press the mixture into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan to create an even crust. You can use the back of a spoon to press it down firmly. • In a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth using an electric mixer. Add the sugar and vanilla extract, and continue beating until the mixture is well combined and creamy. • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, add the pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Mix until everything is fully incorporated and the batter is smooth. • Pour the filling over the crust in the springform pan. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 50 to 60 minutes, or until the edges are set but the center is slightly jiggly. • While the cheesecake is baking, prepare the topping by mixing together the sour cream, sugar and vanilla extract in a small bowl. • Once the cheesecake is done baking, remove it from the oven and carefully spread the sour cream topping evenly over the surface. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes to set the topping. • Remove the cheesecake from the oven and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld and the cheesecake to fully set. • Before serving, carefully remove the sides of the springform pan. Slice the pumpkin cheesecake and enjoy the delightful flavors of the holiday season! november/december 2023 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

Post Fallidays Tiny Tree Festival returns December 2 by JILLIAN CHANDLER
P
ost Fallidays Tiny Tree Festival, brought to you by Heritage Health and the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce, returns Saturday, December 2, to Prairie Falls Golf Club Event Center (3200 North Spokane Street) in Post Falls for some mid-morning food, fun and festivities. The inspiration for the event came from the Chamber of Post Falls’ previous CEO, Jame’ Davis, according to current CEO and president Christina Petit. “She had seen a similar event happening in Lewiston, Idaho, and loved the idea of a tiny tree festival. I love the idea too because these beautifully decorated trees are something that everyone can afford and enjoy. It makes the event available to everyone, and it is a perfect and festive way to kick off the holiday season.” There will be approximately 15 to 20 4-foot trees up for bid during the silent auction that are fully decorated in a variety of creative themes, full of gifts on and under the tree. The values start at $250 and go up from there. “One year, Horizon Credit Union donated a tree with every kitchen appliance could ever need including a Kitchen Aid mixer,” Christina recalls. “We added centerpieces as well that not only provide décor for the event, and then your home, but they have fun gifts too.” Guests will enjoy a lovely brunch (petit fours, tea sandwiches, fruit and cheese display, smoked salmon, delicious breakfast breads and more), Mimosa and Bloody Mary Bar, and a festive photo booth. This year’s holiday entertainment will feature dancers from Expressions Dance Studio.

NOVEMBER

You can purchase tickets using the QR code on-site, or opt to buy online (in advance or day of). Please note, the winner will need to make arrangements to pick up the tree after the event. Just 225 tickets will be sold, priced $35 per person or $260 for a table of eight, and include brunch and one complimentary drink. Tickets can be purchased on the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce website, PostFallsChamber.org (scroll down to the calendar, choose the month of December, and click on the event listed under December 2, and click on the link to the event page) or by calling 208.773.5016. Those interested in donating a decorated tree (deadline to sign up is November 21), or interested in a sponsorship opportunity, can reach out to Christina at christina@postfallschamber.com.
