Over the years, since the inception of Astroturf in 1965, man has struggled to come to grips with the ultimate question: Is the grass “greener” when it’s artificial? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of going with synthetic grass versus genuine grass to answer this question. Artificial grass was first used in Major League Baseball in the Houston Astrodome in 1966, replacing the grass field used when the stadium first opened a year earlier. Artificial grass stands up to heavy use, thus the reason it’s used on many sports fields. It requires no irrigation or trimming. Domed, covered and partially covered stadiums may require artificial grass or turf because of the difficulty of getting grass enough sunlight to stay healthy. As for the pros of installing artificial grass for your front and backyard spaces, most people use artificial grass because it requires little to no maintenance. It also requires no irrigation, trimming or gaspowered lawn equipment, and with growing concerns about water conservation and healthrelated issues surrounding fertilizers and pesticides, artificial grass is increasingly becoming the first choice for homeowners. Dog owners can rejoice that synthetic turf is great at preventing even the most persistent puppies from digging, while being exceptionally stain and fade resistant. Not only does it stand up to pet abuse, but your lawn edges can stay crisp and look sharp over the years. Synthetic grasses come in different varieties of colors, lengths, densities and finishes, improving the aesthetics of your home while simultaneously upping your home’s curb appeal. Another key advantage of artificial turf is the longevity and durability of modern synthetic grasses. Until recent years, the warranty offered on most turf products only covered a few years. However, with the recent developments in the artificial grass industry, warranties for the longevity of some lawns can reach up to 25 years. 20

come to the artificial side With the longevity and reliability of artificial grass, this home-use lawn product can come with a high-priced barrier of entry. On average, a homeowner will spend between $6 to $12 per square foot, versus 40 cents per square foot for traditional sod. You will also need to add infill to ensure that individual grasses stay upright and do not get matted down. There are wide varieties of infills available including rubber, sand, Zeofill, Durafill, Envirofill and TCool Infill. The most widely used type of infill would be crumb rubber for most stadiums and sports arenas. Made from recycled tires, it provides good shock absorption qualities. The second most widely used infill is silica sand. Sand is the least expensive infill and tends to be cooler in direct sunlight while absorbing moisture and eliminating some odors naturally. Silica sand infill is easy to come by and spread, while like any day at the beach the silica sand can be jagged and painful to roll around on. It may also just hitch a ride to the bottom of your shoes and make its way into your home. Another popular infill that people use for their artificial turf is ZeoFill or ZeoLite Infill. This infill tends to be the least popular for its lightweight properties but most popular for eliminating pet waste smells. Zeolite is also very porous, which helps keep your turf cooler in direct sunlight when compared to most rubber and sand infill options. Regardless of which one you go with, they all have their pros and cons. If you have pets 22

COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

or children, you will most likely want to get an infill that keeps your grass cool, orderly and odorless to help keep your artificial lawn pristine. While you may be conserving resources like water with an artificial lawn, synthetic grass will heat up exponentially in direct exposure to sunlight. While artificial grass is non-flammable, you don’t want it to be extremely hot to the touch. One solution to the problem is to use an infill designed to cool off your grass and make sure that it’s fine to walk on with your bare feet. Some infills (like the TCool Infill) are also designed with technology that captures water from

rainfall, dew, or irrigation and stores it for later use. As the sun’s radiation heats the turf, an infill can help release moisture, keeping the surface cool for up to four days from a single moisture event. While infill is a great way to keep your lawn looking its best, it needs to be replaced a few times throughout the life of the turf. The most infill can cost between $8 to $12 per bag, and one bag typically covers about 30 square feet. Replacing your infill can be done yourself, or you can use a service from a professional installer if time is more of an issue than money. When considering the cost versus time and convenience of an artificial lawn, it can be a great investment that will outlast a traditional (organic) lawn. The amount of time it takes to take care of the soil, plant seed, or install a traditional lawn will be saved. Though the initial cost of installation may be higher than anything else you’ll find on the market, the pros of low maintenance and longevity of your lawn make the pros of purchasing an artificial turf lawn far outweigh the negatives of purchasing and installing your lawn. With the onset of new and improved technologies, including processes to increase the clarity and vibrance of one’s artificial lawn, the grass might just be greener on the artificial side. Of course, you are free to make that judgment for yourself.

making old new again Seeing the beauty in antique pieces by RACHEL KELLY

J

ust because it’s old doesn’t mean it’s done. If anything, it means that it’s stood the test of time. As styles have gone in and out, there are some pieces that stand out as being classic. It could be the lines of the piece that never go out of style, or its lasting practical use. Perhaps it’s that the object seems to carry with it a memory, a story. Maybe that table used to center in your grandmother’s kitchen, bearing the responsibility of feeding 20 farmhands for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Maybe that jewelry box once held your mother’s wedding ring. Perhaps that hat stand was bought for your great grandfather by his childhood friend. Maybe those boots were made for walking, and there’s still plenty of journey left in them. Whatever the reason, whatever the story, here are six ways to give a new look to your favorite old pieces.

C h a n g e Yo u r P e r s p e c t i v e . Sometimes the best way to bring life to old things is to change what holds it. Whether this means giving those vintage pictures a new frame, placing an antique piece on a floating shelf, or placing it in an unconventional location. A great example would be plates hung on the wall or door handles used as hooks. There are lots of ways to keep unused pieces that are no longer needed for everyday use.

Change Its Purpose. The jug that used to carry water from the outdoor well just might make a great umbrella stand. The container that used to carry snuff might be great for pills. The door that used to hang in your family’s 100-year-old shed might be great as a backdrop for hooks that you can hang your bags from. The large picture frame might look great as a headboard, or the ladder might double as a blanket holder.

A S p l a s h o f C o l o r. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your old pieces. An old milking stool or basket can provide that much-needed pop of color in an otherwise earth tone (or white) home. Bright colors such as sun yellow, teal, fire engine red, aqua … whatever you like best. Everybody needs something that when they look at it, they can’t help but smile. Sometimes a little color is all you need.

G i v e I t a Wa s h . This is not meant to be a literal wash, although a clean slate is always best to work with. With old things comes a lot of wood color, which can mean a lot of different shades of wood in one place. Dipping a damp rag in white paint, and then rubbing the white along the surface of your old antique can preserve a classic look while allowing it to be more neutral.

Strip It Down. Some pieces really do need to retain their wood color to preserve their authenticity. However, as previously noted, a whole bunch of wood colors in one space may not be preferable. Stripping your old pieces down to their bare wood, and then re-staining them in matching stain brings much-needed congruence to a place filled with old pieces from different eras. If it’s got to be wood color, it might as well match.

Re-fit and Polish. There are some things that are simply not made the way they used to be. Like those big wing-backed wooden upholstered sofa chairs, or hundred-yearold chandeliers. There are some things that are right just the way they are, however, they may not be quite perfect as they are. In such a case, the best thing to do is to reupholster or shine to perfection. Some things just have good bones but need a little shine to highlight their original glory.

Salute to A

CENTURY The North Idaho State Fair celebrates 100 years b y TAY LO R S H I L L A M

T

his August, the North Idaho State Fair salutes to a century, promising more to see and do as it celebrates 100 years of classic fair fun.

The first North Idaho State Fair was held on September 29, 1922. Now an award-winning fair based in Coeur d’Alene, the fair has held strong to its values of local agriculture, talent, youth education, and family friendly entertainment. “Every year, we try to keep a really good combination of keeping our traditional favorites and adding some new flair,” said Alexcia Jordan, general manager for the North Idaho State Fair. “We try to keep it interesting so you don’t always see the same thing but can still count on seeing your favorites.” Jordan looks forward to a “really good combination” of those factors this year: the traditional staples of fair food, exhibits and entertainment, and exhibits, blended with new, exciting elements to memorably ring in 100 years. “We’ve worked really hard with our programming,” she said. “We kick off the fair on the 19th, with a grand opening ceremony that anyone is invited to attend,” shared Jordan. The ceremony will take place at 4pm, with the fair itself opening at 2pm that day. Music is an intrinsic piece of fair entertainment, and this year, musical artists will take the stage three nights in a row for the Party in the Dirt Concert Series at Findlay Arena. Traditionally, the concert series has been two nights long. This year, it’s scheduled for August 22 through 24, featuring platinum recording artist and singer-songwriter Jordan Davis, Grammy-

nominated Christian rock quartet Skillet, and popular rock band the All-American Rejects. Additional live entertainment will include a new show this year, Big Air at the Fair, featuring X Games medalists performing “crazy tricks,” including flips on snowmobiles, dirt bikes and four-wheelers. “If you’re an adrenaline junkie, that show is for you,” Jordan said. Big Air at the Fair will bring its high-flying, family friendly fun to Findlay Arena on August 19. Monster truck shows are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, followed by the Concert Series, Xtreme Bulls on Thursday night, and ending with the ever-popular Gem State Stampede PRCA Rodeo, which is often a sold-out event.

“On Sunday, we do two shows, a matinee rodeo and demo derby at 6:30pm,” Jordan said. “Those last five shows always sell out before that day. If anyone wants to come, it’s critical to buy tickets early, and buy online.” The fair’s Salute to a Century theme will be continuously celebrated throughout its run, with fun elements like Decade Days that will highlight music from each decade, starting with the 1920s and working through to current popular music. For its milestone year, the fair is offering commemorative 100th Anniversary coins, including a silver-plated souvenir coin and a 24-carat gold-plated coin, for sale on the fair website. “We also have some fair and rodeo gear available,” Jordan said.

“The best feeling in the world is stepping back and watching people enjoy the work that we put in to put it all together.” One of the top additions this year is the introduction of the Golden Ticket. “It’s an exciting new program that offers lifetime admission to the fair,” Jordan said. All proceeds from this year’s Golden Ticket sales will go toward a new, larger livestock barn at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, a need recognized by the fair board. “Our livestock programs have grown exponentially, so we’re down on space,” Jordan said. After years of limited space for livestock programs, the fair looks forward to the introduction of the Golden Tickets serving a special, unique purpose that will pave the way for the next 100 years of 4-H and FFA programs. Jordan herself has been working with the fair since February of 2015. The livestock is one of many of the functioning pieces she appreciates about the event. “The competitive exhibit program is the most traditional piece of what fairs are today. It’s why fairs got started— showing your livestock, all of those things that we offer premiums for,” she said. “It’s a fun little way to, as a person who is crafty or creative, have the opportunity to showcase your talent and earn back accolades—ribbons, prize money, whatever that might be.” Beyond the opportunities to showcase local talent, Jordan is driven by the value the fair brings to the community. “The best feeling in the world is stepping back and watching people enjoy the work that we put in to put it all together,” Jordan said. “Watching people enjoy, smile, laugh, be together with friends and family, whatever it is that brings them to the fair, is just a beautiful thing when you know you’re helping to create memories for others and bringing smiles to people’s faces. That’s my purpose.” The North Idaho State Fair has now brought that purpose to life for a century, and everyone’s invited. “We’ll be here for 10 days of fun to salute a century,” Jordan said. “Skip the lines and buy online—it’s the fastest and most convenient for everyone!” Tickets are now available online at NISFair.fun. july/august COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

oeur d’Alene’s Kevin Mahoney was not only honored as the school district’s high school and overall Teacher of the Year, but was selected to represent Coeur d’Alene Public Schools as the nominee for Idaho State Teacher of the Year. Mahoney is a math teacher at Venture High School, an alternative school that offers an emphasis on professional technical courses and focuses on college and career preparedness. Mahoney is known at his school to be an engaging educator, demonstrated through lunch breaks spent playing basketball with students or playing ping pong after school, and starting an after-school art club for his students. “Kevin is helping students gain confidence to tackle problems and understand what it takes to solve challenging issues,” Coeur d’Alene Schools shared. He has been teaching in Coeur d’Alene Public Schools for nearly five years. Before time with Coeur d’Alene Public Schools, he taught at Post Falls High School. “The type of kids we have here make every bit of work that I do 110 percent worth it,” Mahoney shared to Venture High students upon acceptance of his award. According to Coeur d’Alene Schools, “Both of his parents were teachers as well, and he grew up understanding how rewarding it can be to

have an impact on students every day.” It’s clear that Mr. Mahoney’s intention to impact his students has been successful. At Venture High School, Mahoney has led a wellness program that combines extracurricular activities into the school day once a week, allowing students to experience a wide spectrum of activities including yoga, dancing, rock climbing, and learning how to play the guitar. “All of these things make teaching curriculum easier in the classroom,” Mahoney shared in a statement. “I teach math to at-risk students, a combination that is challenging to say the least. To engage students in learning mathematics, I get creative. I film my own real-world math tasks, bringing fun, challenging tasks from their own community.” His approach to teaching is anchored in a desire to build positive relationships with his students. As Mahoney’s educator biography reads, “There is no reason learning math can’t be fun!” It’s clear that his engaging curriculum and interactive approach is exactly that. As the nominated overall outstanding educator, Mahoney will continue to represent the district over the coming year. He remains in the running for Idaho state Teacher of the Year, an honor whose winner is typically announced in September during a surprise visit at their school.

“I am looking forward to competing at such a high level at UC Santa Barbara, with the amazing coaching staff and team that they have there.” “One of my biggest challenges was recruiting,” Skylar admitted. “I knew I wanted to play college basketball, but when COVID hit, it was a struggle to get exposure for a while.” Through the challenge presented by the pandemic, Skylar successfully emerged with a basketball scholarship to the University of California Santa Barbara, where she’ll attend school in the fall. In her years of athletic experience, her most memorable moment was beating out a local rival team for a spot at the state championship.

“O

ne of my biggest takeaways from sports is that you can achieve anything you set your mind to and work for,” Coeur d’Alene High School’s Skylar Burke shared. “The outcome is worth all the effort in the end.” Named one of the high school’s two Athletes of the Year, Skylar’s hard work has certainly translated into an ideal outcome, from her recognition as a scholarship-winning athlete, being named among the top 10 5A basketball players in Idaho earlier this year, and countless more successes.

Skylar has played sports since she was 5 years old and was a multi-sport athlete throughout her high school career, playing volleyball, basketball and softball. Even still, her high school career wasn’t without its challenges, especially when COVID-19 entered the picture.

“It was my sophomore year that we upset our rivals, Lake City High School, to become district champion and go to state,” she recalled. As a class of 2022 senior, Skylar graduated as a four-year varsity player in softball and basketball and a three-year varsity player in volleyball. Now, she sets her sights on college basketball and beyond, where her drive will surely translate into continued success. “I am looking forward to competing at such a high level at UC Santa Barbara, with the amazing coaching staff and team that they have there,” Skylar shared. When asked her plans for the future and her career beyond school, she shared her interest in pursuing crime analysis and forensic psychology. Even still, she remains open to where her talent in sports can take her. “I would love to play professional basketball, though, if the opportunity came up,” she said. Right now, she can enjoy the rewards of her efforts. “It felt amazing being selected as Athlete of the Year,” she said, “and getting recognized for all of the hard work and dedication I have put into all of my sports.”

“I

Now, as he looks forward to life beyond high school, he’s set a goal to start at outside linebacker at Carroll. There, he will be majoring in business marketing as he continues his athletic career. His accomplishments didn’t come without difficulty, however—as a multi-sport athlete, injuries posed a challenge. “My biggest challenge as an athlete was going from one sport to the next, while battling injuries and other types of body fatigue,” he says. “I’ve torn both my AC joints in my shoulders, I’ve had a few bone bruises on my ankles, and I broke my ankle this year during football season.” Through it all, Gunner developed a strong sense of dedication, discipline and perseverance in all aspects of attaining success. “The best thing I have learned from sports is that you have to not only be dedicated on the field, the court, and the mat, but also dedicated in the weight room and in the classroom,” he affirms. “And sports have really taught me how to do that!” Now, Gunner looks forward to the future with gratitude. “I’m super blessed and thankful for being selected as Athlete of the Year,” he said. “I know I couldn’t have done this without my friends, family, coaches, and all of my supporters! A VOICE FOR THE CHILDREN N o r t h I da h o CA S A s u p p o r t s advocac y for young victims

COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL july/august 2022

That support is what drives North Idaho CASA: the need for child advocacy; being the voice of children who have suffered abuse. North Idaho CASA, an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children, supports trained advocates for over 300 victims of child abuse and neglect in North Idaho across Benewah, Bonner, Boundary, Kootenai and Shoshone counties. Across Idaho, seven CASA/GAL programs recruit, train and support volunteers in advocating for children who have been impacted by entry into the child welfare system and who have been victims of neglect, abandonment or abuse. “CASA advocates investigate child protection cases, represent the child’s best interest in court, and help find them a safe home with a forever family,” according to their mission statement. “Our vision is that every child victim aged 0 to 18 in the five northern counties under the purview of the Child Protective Act is appointed a CASA, who will advocate for and represent the best interests of the child for the entirety of their child protection case.” The organization has made a difference in the lives of children

and families through its various projects, fundraising efforts, and programs, notably through the development of Project Permanency. “Most people know that CASA helps children overcome the trauma they have experienced through abuse or neglect,” the organization shared. “Whether reunification with the biological family or adoption into a new family is the result, CASA also provides tools for healthy living to the whole family.” Reunification is the process of reuniting families after children have been removed for their safety. Child welfare agencies report the process requires multifaceted strategies, family centered services, and an array of valuable resources. Through Project Permanency, North Idaho CASA works to support family connections, aid in the process of releasing shame, and helps to build stable relationships. “We are rooting for successful reunification for all of our families,” they share. The development of the Project Permanency program grew from a recognized need to provide basic household essentials for reunified families, including beds, kitchen appliances, vehicles, and more—essentials provided to instill a feeling of normalcy, family activities, and a safe space. Through Project Permanency, North Idaho CASA works to support family connections and more stable relationships. july/august COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

“S

afety and security don’t just happen,” the North Idaho CASA’s website reads, quoting Nelson Mendela in a statement supporting children in living “a life free of violence and fear.”

43

“WHETHER REUNIFICATION WITH THE BIOLOGICAL FAMILY OR ADOPTION INTO A NEW FAMILY IS THE RESULT, CASA ALSO PROVIDES TOOLS FOR

healthy living to the whole family.” “We have found, in most cases, the difference between the path to successful permanency or financial and emotional turmoil can be as simple as having a drivable car or a working washing machine,” the organization stated. Project Permanency also allows for partnerships with local businesses to fulfill the item requests for supported families. Project Permanency has seen success—its funding has helped keep siblings suffering from situational trauma together with the purchase of a triple bunk bed, and aided foster children in regaining their health and making progress through difficult diagnoses such as failure to thrive and plagiocephaly. These stories began with children in neglect and trauma, but through acts of kindness facilitated by Project Permanency, have evolved into stories of hope and resiliency. North Idaho CASA offers ample opportunity to support its cause: sponsoring a child, donating online, becoming a corporate partner, or becoming a SuperHero. As one of North Idaho CASA’s fundraising programs, the SuperHero Society allows members to offer a monthly donation, starting at as little as $20 per month, to help ensure North Idaho CASA can serve every child rescued. No matter the size of the donation, no donation is too small, allowing anyone with any budget to become a SuperHero and provide the gift of security to the CASA advocates and child victims throughout North Idaho. Those interested in supporting North Idaho CASA can also do so through their annual fundraising events. “CASA’s two biggest fundraisers are happening this summer and fall,” shared Kristin Ludwig, director of development at North Idaho CASA. The CASA Classic is scheduled for Friday, August 5, at the Circling Raven Golf Club. Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin sponsorships are available, and team registration is open as of July 1. Their annual fall fundraiser, CASA Uncorked, will take place at the Hagadone Event Center on Thursday, October 27, at 5pm.

BRINGING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER

THROUGH ART! 10th annual Coeur d’Alene Artists Studio Tour returns this August by JILLIAN CHANDLER

“I

believe in the power of connection, education and community. These entities can propel us toward a more joyful life, if only we seek them out.” - Kathy Gale, impressionist painter and co-founder of the Coeur d’Alene Artists Studio Tour The last weekend of August, you won’t want to miss out on attending the Coeur d’Alene Artists Studio Tour. 2022 marks the 10th year of the tour, presented by the Coeur d’Alene Arts & Culture Alliance, and is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28, 10am to 5pm both days. Free to the public, this is your opportunity to experience the creative process firsthand. The studio tour affords the community the opportunity to visit 17 working studios of painters, sculptors, jewelers, potters, glass artists and textile artists, from Hayden to Coeur d’Alene and into Post Falls. More than 40 artists will be showing and discussing their work, often while working on new pieces and demonstrating their unique style. “The studio tour is the rare opportunity for artists or enthusiasts, of any age, to see art being created and to meet the artists creating it,” shares Steven Shortridge, world-renowned painter and writer, who will be featured at Kevin and Patti Jester’s studio and exquisite garden. “It’s not magic, it’s passionate work. Come and see!” Opt for the VIP Shuttle Tour, which is $50 per person each day. “It includes a lovely catered lunch in one of the studio gardens, bottomless mimosas, transportation for the group to each studio—half on Saturday and the other half on Sunday (though you do not have to do both days)— july/august 2022 COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL july/august COEUR D’ALENE LIVING LOCAL

and a tour guide who gives insights into each of the artists prior to the visit,” says Ali Shute, executive director of the Coeur d’Alene Arts & Culture Alliance. This year, with the goal of making art affordable for everyone, each participating artist will be creating a unique 6x6-inch piece of original art to sell for $95. Prior to the tour, from August 12 through 19, there will be a preview exhibit at the Human Rights Education Institute, where each artist will be displaying a piece of art representing their style of work. That Friday evening, August 19, from 6 to 8 pm, is the preview reception. “This is a chance to meet the artists, pick up information about the tour the following weekend, and enjoy an evening of art and music with a live band,” says Ali. Appetizers will be included, along with a no-host bar. Additional information, along with the list of participating studios and tour map, can be found online at ArtsandCultureCdA.org/ artists-studio-tour. Studio Tour maps are currently available at the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center. Tips for the Tour: • Reach out. Artists appreciate conversing with people interested in their art and practice. • Bring questions. Consider asking about sources of inspiration, artistic processes and techniques, and maybe the artist’s intentions. • Ask first. Be sure to ask before taking photos of an artist’s work and before posting anything on social media. If there is a piece of art you’re interested in, ask if it’s for sale!

ome of the oldest people in the world, with the highest quality of life, live in the Mediterranean. This could be in large part to their active lifestyle; the people of Greece and Italy walk and bike everywhere as well as spend a lot of time outdoors. This could be because of their deep connection to family; the people of the Mediterranean are interconnected to their family and friends and often live with several generations under one roof. It is also true that culturally, the people within the Mediterranean stick to rhythms that encourage them to connect to their greater community. However, their rich lifestyle of lifelong health is believed to be mostly attributed to their diet. The Mediterranean is known for its cultural roots that encourage high-quality foods, eating within season, eating locally according to what’s available, gardening, and responsibly caring for the animals and animal products that they consume. The Mediterranean diet is modeled after this way of living and encourages a healthy dietary pattern that is sustainable as a lifestyle. This means that diets such as the Mediterranean diet are more a way of life, versus a strict standard that forces weight loss; weight that once lost returns once you return to daily living. Research shows that the Mediterranean diet can lower chances for cardiovascular diseases, prevent certain types of cancer, and it can have a positive impact on mental health. If we are to assume that the people of the Mediterranean live a long life in part because of their diet, there is also the added benefit of living long. The goal of such a diet is not to look perfect but to live within the weight that is healthy for your body type. To help you to feel good, versus craft a body that is “presentable.” The goal here is long life, lived well, surrounded by those you love. In light of that, what is the Mediterranean diet? The Mediterranean diet is pretty straight forward, crafted around local Mediterranean cuisine. It emphasizes fruits,

Foods that have a (relatively) ample amount of salt aren’t prohibited in any way, just foods that contain high levels of sodium. Foods that are high in sodium are generally preserved and highly processed; sodium becomes easier to avoid as long as highly processed foods are limited. The reason that the Mediterranean diet has been proven to work so well is because it mimics the natural flow of what our bodies derive from nature and suggests ingredients that have been proven to encourage 62

healthy habits for generations. It is for this reason that there are other diets that also work in much the same way that the Mediterranean diet does. Diets such as the DASH diet are also considered to be healthy for lifelong use. DASH, or the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, is a diet that allows for more dairy and meat and doesn’t restrict healthy fats to ingestion of olive oil. True to its name, the DASH diet helps lower blood pressure by focusing on foods that are high in potassium, calcium and magnesium. This means that under the DASH diet one can eat fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, beans, lentils, dairy and lean meats all in balance and moderation. Diets such as Paleo, Keto, or Whole 30 are surprisingly not on this list. Not because they don’t yield results! The Keto Diet can be great for someone who is suffering from diabetes, and the Whole 30 diet can be great for helping someone overcome bad habitual eating. However, these diets are not considered heart healthy, nor are they approved for lifetime adherence. In any diet, the focus should always be on quality over

quantity. Foods high in nutrition are the primary focus, versus foods that satisfy quickly but ultimately go unused by the body. That being said, our bodies need all kinds of foods, versus strict restrictions, to get the variety of nutrients that it needs for overall health. For instance, breads and pastas are widely eaten in sustainable diets because carbohydrates are good for quick bursts of energy. Carbohydrates are balanced in moderation by fresh and cooked fruits and vegetables, as are part of a meal. Eating well isn’t so much about focusing on eating one thing and not eating another, but eating everything all together. For instance, pasta is usually eaten with pasta sauce, which usually incorporates a variety of vegetables with a moderate amount of meat. Taken all together, a healthy diet focuses on the whole plate. In turn, from head to toe, the whole body is well fed. 64

S

ometimes getting an education can feel like a hard-fought uphill battle, but North Idaho College students enrolled in Systematic Botany took it to a literal level when they scaled a mountain to complete a lesson on April 26.

“I say this class is as close as we get to a trade skill in the sciences,” Kelly said. “We’re actually learning the skill to identify plants, and that’s genuinely useful for anyone who wants to do outdoor biology, whether they’re doing it for a career or for a hobby.”

More than a dozen students took to Canfield Mountain trails on a rainy morning to collect wildflower samples. It was the final field trip of the semester for a class on regional flora that NIC has offered to students and the community for decades.

Maggie Broadway is a dual-enrolled NIC student and a junior at Christian Heritage School in Edwall, Washington, who commuted to NIC’s Coeur d’Alene campus to take the botany class this spring and earn general education credits before she graduates high school.

NIC botany students learn about the anatomy, classification and identification of plants in lectures before they spend the last month of classes in the field collecting samples at Beauty Bay Campground on Lake Coeur d’Alene, at Stateline and Q’emiln Park in Post Falls, and at Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene. They bring fresh samples to the lab at NIC, where they inspect, dissect, identify and preserve plants in preparation for their final project— the presentation of an herbarium, a collection of dried specimens that includes detailed information and data. NIC Associate Professor of Biology Mike Kelly said the course is a micro-focused localized class that gives students valuable and relevant knowledge. 66

“I’m thinking about doing an Outdoor Recreation Leadership program, so it would be nice to say, ‘Hey, that’s this kind of tree and this is this plant’ in that program or in a job in that field,” Broadway said. “It’s kind of a party trick, but I’d rather take botany than any other science. I’m not particularly good at science, because it’s hard for me to see the actual application of science in the things I like to do, but I like plants, and this is something I can see and use in real life.” For more information about the botany class, contact NIC Associate Professor of Biology Mike Kelly at 208.769.3211 or| mike.kelly@nic.edu.

P

eople suffering from severe mental illnesses still have the same physical challenges as everyone else.

Currently, Harmony House cares for about 70 residents at five locations in Hayden, says owner Jenifer Christensen.

Many medications used to treat severe mental health conditions can cause weight gain, elevated cholesterol, and increased blood sugar levels. This can greatly increase the risk of other medical concerns such as diabetes and heart disease. Statistics show that men and women with mental illness have shorter life spans, reducing life expectancy from between nine to 20 years.

“Our residents have enjoyed having the providers come to their home,” says Christensen.“The communication between the providers and our staff has been wonderful.”

“The negative effects of mental illness can have physical consequences, leading to a significant reduction in lifespan and quality of life,” says Dr. David Atkins, vice president of Medical Services. “Having access to care is a major issue for this patient population. Sometimes it is as simple as not having transportation.” In hopes of changing these negative statistics, the old-fashioned medical tradition of house calls is making a comeback. Heritage Health is now sending its providers to people’s homes through its Healthcare at Home program. “We can provide an enhanced level of care for patients who historically don’t see a provider very often,” says Atkins. “This will improve access to preventive care and ensure medical concerns don’t fall through the cracks.” Harmony House Assisted Living specializes in providing a safe home environment for individuals with mental illnesses, traumatic brain injuries or intellectual disabilities.

Atkins says the communication piece is essential.

North Idaho’s Largest Primary Care Provider

HEALTHCARE AT HOME

“We can go in and look at the notes from a provider in real-time and make medication adjustments based on what is happening with the patient,” he says. “Having a direct line of communication between our psychiatric services and our medical services has been a game-changer for many of our patients.” Barbara Sullivan, a house administrator with Harmony House, says having a provider come to the residents makes a huge difference. “I can’t even begin to tell you how much it has done for our residents,” says Sullivan. “A lot of them don’t like to leave the house. I have one resident who has paranoid schizophrenia, and getting him to go to the doctor is like pulling teeth. If the weather is bad, he won’t go. If he thinks there is a storm coming, he won’t go. He’ll say he doesn’t feel up to it. Now, he is seeing his primary care provider regularly. It’s been a godsend for him.” To see if you are eligible for services through the Healthcare at Home program at Heritage Health, call 208.620.5250.

Exercises for the Ages N o m a tt e r y o u r a g e , t h e s e a t - h o m e routines are sure to keep you fit by JILLIAN CHANDLER

S

tarting at a young age, just days old, we are constantly exercising our little bodies. As babies, we first learn to lift our heads, learn to roll over, crawl, walk. Before you know it, we’re off and running. As toddlers and young children, we’re always on the move. And at some point, whether it be the hours spent behind a desk at school or at the office, we find it harder to find the time to keep our bodies active. Extracurricular sports are a great way to be active during your school-age years, but after that, what? Here are some great ways to exercise your body throughout the week, no matter your age. You’ll feel better, and younger. The internet is a great resource to find instructions and videos of different movements and exercises.

Focus on your shoulders, triceps, hamstrings and calves.

Stretching As simple an act as stretching can be, so many of us fail to incorporate this into our daily lives. And it can be done anywhere, anytime, in no time at all—no matter your physical capabilities. When you first wake up in the morning, as your coffee is brewing or your water is boiling for you morning cup of tea, set yourself up on your carpet or yoga mat, and stretch! Focus on your shoulders, triceps, hamstrings and calves. Be sure to breathe during each movement. You’ll feel refreshed and ready to start your day.

Walking We all know that walking is essential. It’s how we get from point a to b, but many aren’t walking enough. Make it a point to get up and moving every hour. Set a timer to remind you. Walk up and down your stairs; purchase a step with risers, adjust to a height that works best for you, and walk/step up and down until you feel your heart rate increase. Even step outside to walk around your yard. The goal is simple—just walk. 70

The Art of Weight Training

1

If it’s been a while since you last lifted a hand-held weight, you will want to start light. You can purchase a set of 1-, 3- or 5-pound weights to start off, and as the current weight you are using becomes easier, move up a pound or 2.

2

Proper form, for any exercise, is imperative; not only to avoid injury but to get the most out of your workout. Videos may be helpful, but you may want to head to a local gym for a one-on-one session with a personal trainer, so they can show you the correct techniques before you get started on your own.

3

Create a simple routine for yourself (or have a personal trainer set one up for you that you can do on your own), and schedule a time each day during the week when you can focus your mind and body to the work.

Strength Training Though we work many of our muscles throughout the day just by doing our normal daily activities and chores, there are muscles that require special attention, as they are not as easily utilized. That’s where strength training comes in. It’s as simple as picking up a pair of hand-held weights (dumbbells). Dumbbell squats, chest presses, deadlifts, scaption raises and rowing are all great exercises that are great for all ages.

Cycling Stationary bicycles are great machines to invest in, with many small, sleek options that don’t take up too much space. And you don’t have to have a room dedicated to a home gym. Stationary bikes can easily fit in your bedroom or living room. While watching your favorite show, instead of lying in bed or lounging on the sofa, make it a point to pedal along while enjoying a little TV entertainment. Depending on your activity level, you can increase the tension for a more intense workout.

Pushups An effective way to strengthen the chest and arm muscles, there are several ways to do a pushup to best suit your age and strength. Using your own bodyweight, and your arms, find a firm surface, place palms shoulder-width apart, the balls of your feet firmly planted on the ground, body in plank position. Slowly bend your elbows, lower your body, and push yourself back up. This exercise can also be done from the knee position, or for older folks, standing upright and pushing from the wall.

HEALTHY TIP/OPEN

THY EAL

tip

Adventure Outside for Your Health and Happiness The summer months give us a reason to get outside, no matter the time of day. As the sun makes its presence known early in the morning and well into the evening, take that as an invitation to take in all that sunshine, fresh air, and all the outdoors that surround you have to offer. A run before work, a walk to your neighborhood restaurant or coffee shop during your lunch break, an after-dinner walk with family; these are the simple ways during a busy work week to unwind, refresh, and squeeze in a little exercise. Come the weekend, plan a hike on your favorite trail; dust off your bicycle and join a riding group; take a swim in your favorite outdoor community pool, river, lake or ocean; or hit the water for some kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding. If you have an entire weekend to escape the everyday, a camping trip to a nearby campground will keep you outdoors and active all day long. There’s plenty of time to get outside and enjoy the outdoors this summer. No excuses. So, what are you waiting for? Start small and think big!

r u o y makeeyes pop

Ready to make your eyes (and eyebrows) pop this summer?

These highlighting facial features can make all the difference in enhancing your face shape and facial expressions. Wellplanned eye makeup can refresh your look instantly, and whether your makeup style is detailed or low-key, this summer’s trends are all about glowing up, starting with those eyes! Don’t overlook the eyebrows when it comes to accentuating those eyes. Through all the trends eyebrows have seen and endured over the years, one thing has been consistently clear: Paying attention to the eyebrows is important! Makeup artists often describe how eyebrows can change the entire look of the face. Eyebrows can reframe the shape of the face and allow you to express yourself without saying a word. Fortunately, there are more ways than ever before to enhance the look of your eyebrows, and many of this season’s most popular methods are nearly effortless. Draw the attention to your eyes this summer with the following tips and trends: Eyebrow Lamination. One of the most popular eyebrow trends of 2022, brow lamination is a non-invasive, semipermanent treatment designed to produce perfectly balanced, brushed-up brows that last for weeks or months. The treatment involves restructuring the brows using a product that helps straighten curled hairs, increase symmetry, and balance gaps in the brow hairs. The brows are set into 76

ultra-glam, adorned features are in a more desirable, brushed-up shape using a long-lasting fixing product, leaving a well-set final result: the appearance of fullerlooking brows. Ask your esthetician about eyebrow lamination. Full, Minimalist Brows. Embracing your natural brow this year? You’re already on trend! Celebrities, influencers and makeup artists alike are keeping their looks simple by embracing their eyebrows’ natural shape for a more relaxed appearance. The all-natural brow embraces length, fullness, longer tails, and fluffy, soft edges. No need for harsh tweezing or over-maintenance. Minimalist is in! Minimalist brows can still be bold—it’s all about embracing the fullness and personality of your natural brows. To accentuate your brows, use a tinted brow gel or pomade, starting with a light application. Work up to find the right amount for your desired look, using makeup brushes to balance the look and achieve your desired shape. Under-Eyeliner. The eyes can be accentuated with just a subtle change, like the placement of your eyeliner or the color you use.

The “reverse wing” trend has emerged for 2022, calling for lines placed under the eye in a bold, flattering look. Under-eyeliner tends to lift the outer corners of the eyes, helping the eyes appear a bit bigger and brighter. Smudged Eyeliner. Expressive “moody” makeup is in for 2022, and you can bring the look of a smoky eye into the summer with this season’s revived smudged eyeliner trend. All you’ll need is your everyday black eyeliner (for ease, opt for a pencil or crayon over liquid eyeliner) and a short eyeshadow brush. The unstructured, messy-chic look is easy to create—simply apply your eyeliner and use your brush to softly blur the lines right away. The best part? Leaning in to the unstructured, rule-free aspect of this look. Release the focus on flawlessness and embrace a little freedom with this trend. Make a Statement with Metallics and Eye Shadows. The summer’s eye makeup trends celebrate color pops with bright, summery tones, and all things glitter. From the runways to mainstream media, the eyes are making more of a statement than ever this year. It’s all about the eyes this season, and ultra-glam, adorned features are in, from metallic eye shadows to carefully placed gems and rhinestones. Adding a gem to the inner corners of the eyes has become a popular look—just use a drop of latex-free lash glue 78

If you want the glam without the accessories, start with a metallic glitter, or a bold, shimmering shade of eyeshadow, to incorporate the statement-making trend into your everyday eye-makeup routine.

Colorful eyeshadows in pastels and bright hues are in—choose your shade and place it on top of an eyeshadow primer to ensure a strong hold. Pair your bright eyes with neutral lip colors and a clear brow wax to keep the color pop in focus! Color Pops with Eyeliner. Not sure if you’re ready to step into the bright-colored eyeshadow trends this summer? If you want to try something new without going for a full-colored eyeshadow, a colored eyeliner applied along your lower lashes is the perfect compromise. It might feel like an adventurous step from your normal look (especially if that look is based in ultra-natural or neutral tones), but it’s a 80

subtle enough step out of your comfort zone that you just might love it! A swipe of color under your bottom lashes can quickly add impact and significantly brighten the eyes with little effort. Warm Blushes and Tanned Tones. Lean into a summery glow and sun-kissed tones with your makeup this season, including your eye makeup! An all-over facial glow is a definite summer look, and all it takes is some bronzer, lipstick in a warm, neutral shade, and a shimmering copper-toned eyeshadow to achieve the appearance of being sun-kissed throughout your face. With blushes back in style this season, use that to accentuate this trend. When you’re using blushes or bronzers to accentuate your facial shape (on the bridge of the nose and low on the cheeks), use the remaining product to brighten your eyelids for an allover brightening!

RH I N E

RIVE EISU CR

I was recently invited on a Press Trip to experience the Viking Egdir, one of the company’s newest longships launched earlier this year, on the Rhine Getaway itinerary. The eight-day cruise began in Basel, Switzerland, with stops in France, Germany and The Netherlands along the Rhine River. Each day brought exciting new discoveries as the ship passed charming villages plucked right from a storybook, vineyards crawling up hillsides, Gothic cathedrals, and even Dutch windmills. The highlight of the trip was the 40-mile stretch of the Rhine River between Koblenz and Bingen, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Egdir cruised past more than 20 medieval castles dating back to 966 and the delightful small towns surrounding them. It was such a magical experience. Pro Tip: Book your airfare through Viking and pay the extra $100 to $150 for Viking Air Plus, which allows you more options in selecting your flights and seats. With the current pilot shortage and frequent airline delays, you will have peace of mind as Viking provides a 24-hour hotline to use during your journey. The representatives work with the airlines and Viking to get you to your cruise. On my trip they even delayed our departure so a guest could make the cruise. INFORMATION VikingRiverCruises.com

I truly enjoyed the culinary experiences on board the Viking Egdir. You have the option of dining in the Restaurant, the main dining venue, or the Aquavit Terrace that offers both indoor and outdoor seating depending on the weather. The same menu is offered at both locations. Each day there are classics that are always available, specials of the day and at dinner a regional menu based on where the ship is. Ingredients are locally sourced, and the chef accents meals from the onboard herb garden. I lost count of how many croissants I ate. Make sure to read the Viking Daily each day. The four-page newsletter has a detailed section of culinary information about the food specialties for your next destination. Viking provides so many opportunities to experience local favorites. I was able to enjoy a slice of Black Forest Cake at a restaurant in the Black Forest region. In the evenings there are optional excursions to local restaurants, pubs or wineries. I took a culinary walking tour of Strasbourg, France, and had the opportunity to eat and drink from local vendors and restaurants across the city. Onboard the ship, some of the cultural enrichment events were culinary with a food demonstration and the opportunity to taste a local delicacy.

Y A ST

My accommodation on the Viking Egdir was their Veranda Stateroom. One of the things I like about Viking is the brand consistency. Each Viking Longship is the same, so you know what to expect. I recommend the Veranda Stateroom, as it gives you extra space with the private veranda. The views are spectacular with a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door, versus one that pulls open, so you can enjoy fresh air in your cabin if you like. A nice feature is all the 110/220-volt outlets and USB ports. The Scandinavian design is thoughtfully engineered with plenty of storage space and a very comfortable bed with luxury linens. River cruising provides a more intimate experience with only 190 guests and 50 crew. You won’t find the spas and multiple dining options that are on ocean cruise ships, but I didn’t miss it. I enjoyed spending time on the sun deck with its 360-degree views of the Rhine River and a beautiful organic herb garden. There is plenty of comfortable seating in the lounge, which serves as the main common area as well as tucked around the ship.

DO

Viking provides one complimentary shore excursion for every port of call except for departure day. On arrival day there was an opportunity to take a Welcome Walk with a local guide through Basel. Each day the included excursion is either a bus tour or a walking tour. I was very impressed with the quality of the tours and the guides. Most days you can take the included tour in the morning and an optional one in the afternoon or evening. Guest services and the program director were flexible and able to arrange seats for a sold-out pub crawl when more guests wanted to go. Take advantage of the fact your ship docks right next to town. I was able to walk right off the ship and into Cologne, Germany, and a few other towns to explore. In Koblenz, Germany, I was able to enjoy a currywurst at a local imbiss (fast food hut) right next to the ship before walking over to catch the gondola high up a hill to the mighty fortress of Ehrenbreitstein. Make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. This was truly a memorable trip.

ffering great food at a reasonable price, paired with excellent service and a familiar face, has always been the goal at Moon Time in Coeur d’Alene. And guests get what they have come to expect. From the beginning, it has provided the community a warm and comfortable atmosphere where guests feel at home and are provided an exceptional experience—every time. Hydration is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and nothing quenches your thirst like a tall glass of water. Whether you prefer cold or room temperature, it’s up to you. But … sometimes water needs a little kick to make it a bit more exciting.

A CLEAN COMPLEXION What you put into your body directly affects your outward appearance. And there’s no exception when it comes to water. A hydrated body means hydrated skin, and the most noticeable is your face. Water intake plus a good diet and beauty regimen will ensure your face, and the rest of your skin, look their best.

grapefruit Consuming grapefruit not only is hydrating but increases energy levels, aids in skin rejuvenation, improves eyesight and metabolism, helps build stronger nails and better hair, and is beneficial in many additional ways.

HUNGER CONTROL Water is known to aid in weight control. Dehydration is all too common among Americans, often resulting in hunger pains when in fact the body is in need of water. Make it a habit to start your morning off with a fresh glass of water, making sure to drink several ounces every hour or so, and more an hour or two before a meal, to help curb your appetite.

orange Oranges are rich with water (a medium orange provides 4 ounces of water). They are high in vitamin C and supply nutrients such as potassium and folate; a great antioxidant and source of fiber, and helps in collagen production, boosts the immune system and aids in iron absorption.

BRAIN POWER The human brain relies on proper hydration in order to function optimally. Research shows that dehydration can affect one’s focus and impair short-term memory function and the recall of long-term memory. Our bodies are constantly losing water. So when you feel like your brain power is struggling, water should be your first go-to solution.

lime

Loaded with nutrients, limes are known to help boost immunity, aid in iron absorption and promote healthy skin, among others. This sour yet fresh fruit is a great addition to a variety of drinks, especially water.
