ESSENTIALS by Ralph Sanders
PET TRUSTS
A LASTING LEGACY
LEAVING A LEGACY FOR YOUR BUDDIES ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO, my wife Peggy decided that we needed a dog. I put my foot down and said “no,” but somehow we ended up at a rescue dog adoption event anyway. There must have been a couple of dozen little dogs there, and I was hoping against hope that none of them would be “the one.” A volunteer opened up a kennel, handed Peggy a cute little reddish brown dog, and asked “Would you please hold him for a minute?” The dog looked in Peggy’s eyes and Peggy looked in his deep brown eyes. I could tell it was love at first sight. I told Peggy, “Here, I’ll hold the dog while you fill out the paperwork.” And that was how we got Winston, who’s been our loyal companion ever since. Especially as we get older, we find that our pets enrich our lives. Our families are busy, busy and often they live out of the area. That leaves our pets for companionship. We love them; they’re part of the family. Like the saying goes, “First they steal your heart, then they steal your bed.” We also find that older people tend to adopt older dogs. They are often easier to care for than puppies, and they are usually very grateful to have a loving home, plus we empathize with their plight. The other, heartbreaking side of this story is that people often neglect to make provisions for their pets should they become incapacitated or die. Our friend Jane Maxon of Fetchyouahouse.com tells the story of a dog that was left alone when mom died. Jane is a real estate agent who was selling mom’s house. She told us that someone came by to feed mom’s dog once a day, but since mom didn’t leave any specific

instructions in her will, no one knew what else to do with him. Eventually her son took the dog to a local vet and asked to have it euthanized. The family was just too busy to take care of it. By then the poor beast was matted, confused and upset, but otherwise healthy. Fortunately, one of the vets took pity on it and found it a good home. Sadly, not all stories like this have as happy an ending. Too many pets are left to chance once their loving owners pass away. One great solution is a pet trust. A pet trust as part of your estate plan makes sure your beloved animals are cared for after you become incapacitated or pass away. This insures that enough money is set aside from your estate to cover the costs of care, and you can provide specific instructions for care and designate a particular person or organization. Peggy and I have one for Winston. You might also consider making a charitable gift to one of the many organizations that provide for the humane care and treatment of abandoned pets. As part of your estate plan, this is a wonderful way to leave a meaningful and lasting legacy. Here’s a short list of organizations that you might to consider: PAWS of Lynnwood www.paws.org Beagle Freedom Project www.beaglefreedomproject.org Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine Humane Society Alliance Education Program dvm.vetmed.wsu.edu/curriculum/humane-societyalliance-education-program
SURVIVING THE ECONOMIC ROLLER COASTER TIPS FOR GAINING CONTROL OVER YOUR FINANCIAL LIFE MONEY TIP IT TWISTS, IT TURNS, it goes up, it comes down and it even has the uncanny ability to make many of us feel a bit wobbly and nauseous. The economic roller coaster has taken all of us for a wild ride, particularly over the past few years. So what can you do now to help gain back some control over your financial life? Here are some timeless tips to help you survive the ride. Pay down your debt, but don’t forget to pay yourself too. The sooner you pay off your debt – especially consumer debt like that of credit cards – the better off you’ll be. However, also set aside money on a regular basis for an emergency. Track, then manage, your cash flow. It’s impossible to manage your money if you don’t have a feel for what you take in and where your money goes. A budget can be a real lifesaver in terms of ensuring that you have a solid financial foundation. Insure the fundamentals (health, property, income and life). Everything you own is at risk IF your fundamental needs of your life are not properly insured. Grow your job skills. Continually seek to grow and enhance your value to your current employer or potential employers by growing your job skills through continuing education, volunteer experiences and more. Direct your bonus or raise toward financial priorities. If you receive a bonus or raise, put it towards a financial priority, like paying down your debt, creating an emergency savings, continuing education, or building your retirement account.
Invest for the long-term. It may be tempting to discontinue participation in your company’s 401(k) account. Don’t! Letting emotions override sound economic decisions could be a big mistake.
NAVIGATE TO YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS
With sound guidance today—and down the road We work with you to create a financial strategy that changes as your life does to help you reach a place of confidence in your finances.
Consider time, not timing. When will you need the money? The strategy of someone 25 years away from retirement versus just one or two is obviously going to be different.
You’ll have access to a full range of products and services like insurance and annuities. And more than 100 years of experience helping Christian families reach their goals and strengthen their communities.

ESSENTIALS HOME HOSTING
AIRBnB AND HOSTING YOUR HOME ARE YOU COVERED? BY TREVOR CAMPBELL, PRESIDENT OF INSURANCE SERVICES GROUP
SINCE ITS START NEARLY 10 years ago, the number of people listing their homes for guest stays through Airbnb has skyrocketed. As more and more vacation goers and business travelers look for alternatives to hotel and motel stays, more and more homeowners see hosting their homes as an opportunity to make a little extra income. Airbnb is an online service that allows homeowners to list and rent lodging in their homes for vacation bookings and short term stays. Airbnb, developed in San Francisco, now has more than 1.5 million listings in 34,000 cities around the world. According to its website, there are more than 300 homes in the Edmonds area alone offering private rooms, floors and entire homes available through Airbnb. If you’ve been thinking about this kind of service for your own home, it’s important to understand the role insurance plays, especially when a home is no longer just a home but also generates some income. Learning by Example Not long ago, we received a call from a client needing to file a homeowner’s claim. The homeowner had some personal belongings stolen. After asking all the right questions and doing the research needed to file the claim, it was determined their personal property was stolen during a guest stay booked through Airbnb. Unfortunately, this client didn’t communicate plans to list their home in this way with their agent.
RENT YOUR HOME Their claim was ultimately denied by the insurance carrier because their homeowner’s policy did not provide coverage for stolen property under such circumstances. We don’t like to see these things happen. Understanding these limitations will help future home hosts from experiencing something similar. Coverage Confusion It seems pretty straight forward – you have a homeowner’s policy that should cover your home and its contents. Where things get tricky is the moment you start “renting” or in this case “booking” a room, floor, or space inside your home, on a short term basis. Every homeowner policy is different and every insurance carrier provides different coverages. When you purchase a standard homeowner’s policy, the contract is written with the understanding that a single family home is occupied as such. These kinds of policies often include exclusions for business among other things. If you purchase a home to use as a vacation property, a second home, or a rental property, there are different policies to cover each use – a standard homeowner’s policy isn’t one of them. In the insurance industry, how you plan to use a home makes a difference.

Airbnb Coverage Airbnb offers what it calls a “Host Guarantee,” but it makes it very clear this “Guarantee” does not replace homeowners or renters insurance. Personal property such as cash, jewelry, collectibles and artwork, if stolen during a guest stay, are not covered under Airbnb’s program. According to its website, the Host Guarantee also does not protect a homeowner from personal liability claims or coverage for shared and common areas of a home.
According to its website, there are more than 300 homes in the Edmonds area alone offering private rooms, floors and entire homes available through Airbnb. Options for Home Hosts As is the case with different hobbies, business endeavors and enterprises, there are options when it comes to insurance coverage. The same holds true for policies that would include coverage for hosting your home through a service such as Airbnb. There are good options available for vacation homes or Airbnb stays. Costs associated with these kinds of specialty policies are higher but so are the risks. As Airbnb and other services continue to grow and our sharing economy continues to evolve, I expect more options will become available. The best advice I can give is to always talk with your agent first so that you know your home and your family are properly protected. The peace of mind that brings is priceless. Trevor S. Campbell, CIC, is the President of Insurance Services Group, an Edmonds based independent insurance agency serving auto, home, and business insurance clients throughout Washington and seven other western states. LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL
BECOME A PEDALHEAD!

Camp helps to develop and perfect bicycle riding skills. By Beth Bond Photos courtesy the Pedalheads
DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR DAD OR MOM holding the seat of your bike as you tried to balance and ride on your own? If you don’t have the time or patience to teach your own kids, I have the answer for you. Pedalheads is a comprehensive program that began in British Columbia with the idea of teaching youngsters to ride safely and skillfully. Indeed, they boast programs from training wheels to trails to traffic control, all geared to kids who want to ride their bikes better. The parent organization is Atlantis, which started with a unique program teaching youngsters to swim. In 1995, this learning scheme was applied to children learning to ride bicycles. They are still expanding this program throughout Canada and here in Washington. For more than 25 years and 175,000 children later, the 10-level program of education and skills has proven its worth.
EdmondsLivingLocal.com
The Pedalheads program is special because it works every time. The bike camp runs for a week at a time, and children ranging in age 2 to 16 years old thrive in the enthusiastic atmosphere. Yes, I said age 2! Younger participants are often dependent on those “training wheels” and use this crutch far longer than necessary; the camp helps them move onto the next level. The camp coaches are college age and young adults who are trained in a learning curriculum that can accommodate all age and skill levels. Each day a different skill is highlighted, and every camper’s attempt is loudly cheered with high fives and fist bumps all around. The small classes and individual attention instills confidence in the young rider, and very soon those training wheels come off for good. On the first day of camp, riders are put in small groups based on age

and skill level. The coach will spend time explaining about a good fit for the bike helmet and adjusting the seat and handlebars, if necessary. A typical camp day, whether morning or afternoon session, begins with some easy games before getting on the bike; games such as “Simon Says” or “Red light, Green light” help set the happy mood of camp and let the children and counselors learn names. They then break into groups and work on skills. The children bring their own water bottles and snacks for break time and enjoy some relaxation with their counselors under the shade canopy. Before everyone heads back to their bikes, there is often a safety lesson, like learning the hand signals and naming the parts of a bike. That is followed by more games – this time with the bikes – like bicycle baseball, “Storm the Castle”(knocking over the cones), and bicycle bowling.
it is always cheerfully available. While listening on the sideline, I enjoyed all the joking camaraderie between the kids and their coaches. When one 5-year-old fell, I grimaced, but he got right up and told everyone, “The bike fell, I didn’t!”
Even the very youngest riders share in the desire to “lose those extra wheels” and be a real bicycle rider, and the small groups and one-on-one time with their enthusiastic coach brings self-confidence to try out their new balance skills. By the third day of camp, there are very few training wheels in sight.
The importance of starting out on the right foot with bicycle safety, for even the youngest child, can’t be stressed enough. And following up with road lessons for the more skilled riders is a must in today’s society. Don’t let another summer go by without advancing from training wheels for a 7-year-old. And, for your peace-ofmind, when an older child is ready to bike to school or a friend’s house, be sure they have the experience of bike camp under their belt.
Of course, parents can stay and watch the lesson, but the kids really do better with just the counselors present. But on the last day, the youngsters are ready to show off for their families. The coaches set up an obstacle course with orange cones and a jumping ramp. Although most of them don’t need any extra help,
We carry a wide array of beautiful, high quality yarn and host fun and informative classes! We also offer free social knitting and crochet times. Bring a project and join us!
Naturally there will be some spills, one child said to his mom, “I got a ‘dirt bath!’” And, with that, jumped right back on the bike. But what about the older bicyclists? I had a chance to see a session of pre-teen riders in action and was impressed with the coaches who refined the skills of kids who thought they already knew it all. There was precision cycling, like turning on a dime, and an obstacle course that taxed them all. Finally, the coach took them out riding on the street with special awareness of cars and pedestrians.
Summertime and school vacation sessions are offered in the greater Seattle area, so go to: info@pedalheads.com for more information.

GOOD NEWS
STARRY NIGHT PROM An evening of joy for special needs kids Photos courtesy Steve Mahler Mahler Photography.
THE GENEROUS EFFORTS OF some incredibly insightful parents and the efforts of a few nonprofit organizations have given young people with disabilities the opportunity to integrate into the population and become contributing members of society. In 2010, King County estimated the number of young people needing extra care in the county at 30,641. Experts believe that number could be significantly higher just six years later based on the outreach programs designed to serve the requirements of the special needs population. Nonprofit organizations, according to one expert, make their assessments based on individual needs, not guidelines mandated by the government. One of those organizations is Special Dreams for Special Kids founded in 2010 by Michelle Tornetta with a group of parents who were gathered together for support. The core mission
of Special Dreams has always been connected to the word “joy.” Tornetta has a daughter with special needs who brings joy to her family, classmates and friends. Special Dreams was formed to encourage kids with various special needs to go for their dreams and not be limited by resources or circumstances. Functioning as a team as well as an advocate for the individuals with special needs, Special Dreams for Special Kids works to combine resources to make the dreams of these special kids come true while providing encouragement for their parents and caregivers. Tornetta and the organizers of the Special Dreams organization discovered that of the biggest joys for both the special needs kids and their parents has been a prom night modified for high school students with special needs. The group’s third annual Starry Night Prom is

scheduled for this month. “When we work together there is nothing we cannot achieve,” said Tornetta. “And when we selflessly help others, our joy is multiplied.” Parents knew that the darker lighting and loud music at regular proms made their kids uncomfortable. So the parents created the Starry Night Prom so their kids could share in the same special occasion producing great joy on their own terms. Jen Salvione said her son Nathan “had the time of his life” at the Starry Night Prom he attended last year. “It was such an amazing event,” the proud mother recalled. “Nathan was accompanied by two young adults who knew him well, so we as his parents were overjoyed that we could take pictures and ‘send him off ’ to prom without

Crowns, red carpet, sparkly lights and all the glamour of prom night,” said Torenatta. “This is their moment to shine.” Other programs created by Special Dreams for Special Kids include a program entitled, Dream Sessions. During a Dream Session, kids with any level of disability can participate in a creative process of exploring their dreams and greatest passions. Similar to the Make A Wish Foundation, a team determines the dream and sets out to gather community and business support to see these dreams become reality. Respite Days is an all-day event established to provide support and encouragement for parents and caregivers of children with special needs that have their plates filled with emotional and
physical challenges. A spokesperson for the Special Dreams Team said the down time is beneficial for parents and caregivers to know that they are not alone feeling disconnected, frustrated, overwhelmed and that no one can fully understand their particular struggle.
were invited. The Prom included fun music with a live DJ, sensory-friendly lighting and music levels. One did not need a date to attend.
The beauty of a network of parents meeting to encourage one another is that resources begin to flow and frustrations melt as they realize someone understands their situation. The big push here is for these people to know they are not alone. It doesn’t matter that the child or the story is not exactly the same, they quickly empathize with similar struggles and challenges. Special Dreams began as a support and encouragement for parents. The group intends to continue with the important role of connecting parents to not only encourage each other, but to celebrate what is unique and wonderful about each child.
There was food and beverages and a photo booth to capture memories. Tickets were only $10 and could be purchased on Eventbrite. Interactive Evenings Bringing an entire new meaning to the phrase ' currency exchange''
F
riday night conversations at the home of Jon Sween have taken an on international flare this year.
In addition to the food on the table, Sween provides the dozen exchange students in his home with a sampling of knowledge he hopes will provide a lasting impact on their lives when they return home. Sween is the founder of Marketplace Connections, an organization dedicated to improving business through networking and meaningful connections. His home-cooked leadership course is the cherry on top of the sundae for the students participating in The Northwest Community College Initiative (NWCCI) offered through Edmonds Community College and funded through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs. “We provide the students with an abbreviated version of an entrepreneurial workshop Marketplace Connections offers to people who have great ideas, but need help turning their dream of a business into a reality,” said Sween. “The students have told us that we have given them the information – and the motivation – they need to launch their own businesses when they get home.” The goal of the NWCCI program, according to program advisor Kim Kraft, is to provide tools to the students to improve their local communities back home after a year-long stay in the United States. “The government funds the exchange to promote the program’s vision for mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries and cultures,” said Kraft. The advisor explained that the program covers the cost of education, housing and normal living expenses, but that students are matched with local families to celebrate milestones and holidays over the course of their time in the Northwest. Hands-On In addition to classwork and exposure to the American lifestyle, NWCCI students are required to serve 60-hour unpaid internships with businesses in the community. Isabeau Malan from South Africa received hands-on experience in event planning with a local caterer. She described the experience as the “glue that brought all of the classwork and discussions into focus.”

Other students in the program are scheduled to complete internships with local organizations such as the YMCA, Fabric of Life, City of Lynnwood and the Snohomish County Economic Alliance. Edmonds, Whatcom Community College and Pierce College have hosted more than 300 international students from 20 countries around the world over the past few years. In an effort to give back to their host communities, this year the international students at Edmonds Community College have worked with kids at Seattle’s Bureau of Fearless Ideas, served meals at Annie’s Kitchen, sorted food donations at Food Lifeline, helped build houses with Hope for Housing in Snohomish County and taught hands-only CPR to community members with the Lynnwood Fire Department. However, the year-long exposure to America would be empty without positive results when the students return home. Kraft said the step-by-step program presented by Sween is one way to ensure success. The local business consultant stopped short of guaranteeing that every student will realize their goals when they returned home, but is grateful to be part of the equation. “My hope is that these students return home with the leadership skills they’ll need to succeed in whatever direction their lives may take them,” said Sween. GRADY OKESON: A SENIOR AT EDMONDS-WOODWAY High School, Grady Okeson credits Coach Alan Bonney with teaching him an important lesson. “(He told me) ‘nothing is given,’” shared Grady. “Running has taught me how to give 100 percent and to never just do something to get it over with, but to always do your best.” And doing his best is what has propelled Grady to become a two-time state participant in cross-country, a captain of the cross-country team and a third place finisher at the Lake Stevens Invite in the 800-meter dash for track.

Grady has always considered himself a hands-on person, and he plans to pursue a career as an electrician and also work in construction. “I love building and feel as if being an electrician is the best route for me,” he shared. Grady said his athletic success has been in part due to doing what he could to remain healthy. “I always listen to my body and do what’s best,” he said. And that includes eating healthy and always being sure to get enough rest.

It is being part of a team and the satisfaction that comes with it that Grady said he loves most about running. “I have never been part of a team or group that is so dedicated and motivated to succeed,” said Grady about his teammates. “We are all great friends and push each other everyday to get better.”

[AMBIENCE]
FIREPITS The outdoor season is something we try to extend as long as possible. But chilly nights don’t mean they have to end. You can cozy up around an outdoor fire pit. There are many affordable and portable types available, including ones with an open flame or those covered with mesh to keep the sparks from flying and keep the kids safe. There are also gas powered or wood burning ones depending upon what you desire. So grab some marshmallows, a warm blanket and start the season early and extend it as long as possible!

[SETTING THE MOOD]
LIGHTING It can make a world of difference in your outdoor living space. Whether it is deck lighting to add ambiance or lighting along a path to make it safer, lighting can add much to your outdoor living space. Low-voltage LED light fixtures run on 12-volt current that’s much safer than regular 120-volt household current, making installation DIY-friendly. You can also use string lights, which offer both versatility and style. They can be found in many styles and sizes, and you can even change up the colors with the season! It’s a great way to add some festivity to your outdoor lighting!
There are several factors to consider when choosing your outdoor patio furniture. You will want to be sure to choose weather resistant furniture. If you have a small area, you may want to think about incorporating benches on your deck to provide more seating space. If you are one who likes to change things up for different occasions, consider choosing a monochromatic theme so you can accessorize and change things up with different pillows and other accessories.

[RELAXATION]
HOT TUBBIN’ IT What better way to relax after a long day than in your own backyard hot tub? There are many options available when it comes to hot tubs and, depending on your needs, you will want to plan before making a quick decision. The first thing to decide is how many people you would like your hot tub to seat. Will you use it for entertaining guests or just for you and your family? Secondly, when deciding where to place your spa, get a perspective of the space, accessibility for the users and proximity to the electrical source. You will also want to consider the privacy and view desired.

OUTDOOR DINING
[WATER FEATURE]
FOUNTAINS The sound of water can be very soothing. Outdoor fountains are becoming increasingly popular and not just to add a sense of peace and serenity to your outdoor living, but to also block out the noise of neighbors, traffic and more. There are many options available for all budgets ranging from plug-in units to custom designs that become the focal point of your outdoor experience. You will want to keep in mind that the further the flowing water travels, the louder the sound becomes. The good news is that all fountains have a recirculating pump, so be sure to get an adjustable one so you can find the level that is right for you!
Dining alfresco. It’s a time of gathering together family and friends and escaping from your daily routine. There are some things to consider when setting up your outdoor dining area. Will you need shelter from the late afternoon and early evening sun? There are ways to achieve this without spending a lot of money. Take a piece of fabric to create your own canopy, changing it up as the seasons change. To provide ambiance to your outdoor dining experience, utilize tabletop lanterns and even provide some fresh cut flowers from the garden.
[LANDSCAPING]
CREATE A PATH While many may think of a garden path as a functional piece of a landscape design, the truth is they can completely transform the aesthetic value of your garden or outdoor passage. Be creative in your design and have fun with it! There are a multitude of materials from which to choose including giant rocks, bricks and wood planks. If your path winds its way through your garden, consider complementing the colors of the flower arrangements in those gardens. There are many DIY options out there so research what will best fit your budget and taste!

Health & Lifestyle TRAIN BETTER
Spring Cleaning
Get a jump on your health this spring. By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor EVERY YEAR AROUND this time we get a primal urge to have some sort of spring cleaning in our lives. The birds start singing, the daylight lingers and buds begin to bloom. I’m not necessarily talking about your house, closet or office. What if our bodies yearn for a more intrinsic cleaning. This year why not spring clean yourself? We can take part in a sort of rebirth that can be done every spring. Take stock in where your health is and where you’d like it to be. When beginning the ritual of tidying your being, I believe we should start at the center. Go look in your pantry and refrigerator. What do you see? Is it crammed with BPA lined cans of food, boxes of cookies
and crackers, and jars of old condiments? Or do you see foods that can nourish your body? Here’s a hint – if you have a jar of basic ranch dressing, it’s a sign that this process may take a while. Pull everything out and check the labels of not just the ingredients but the expiration dates. Make sure you know what food is in your house and start to plan what you want to replace everything you purge with. I understand that eating healthy can be expensive and time consuming, but it doesn’t have to be. Bad health is much more expensive than healthy food ever was. After you finish, it’s time to make some lists. One list of things in your life you aren’t happy with and would like to change, and one list of things

I understand that eating healthy can be expensive and time consuming, but it doesn’t have to be. Bad health is much more expensive than healthy food ever was. in your life you’d like to accomplish. You can think big or small. Next to each item notate what daily habits are helping you accomplish your goals and what habits are impeding your success. I should have warned you this might take a lot of paper. Now, number the goals from easiest to hardest or most time consuming to conquer. If you start simple, it’s easy to keep your momentum going to accomplish more and more. If you know what you are doing to help or hinder your process, you now have a basic outline for success. And in my experience, once a goal is outlined on paper, it becomes much easier to put a plan in action and the obstacles seem surmountable. These lists can help you work through mental and emotional roadblocks that you never realized you had. It can be quite cathartic of you take some time with this. I’m assuming that one of your goals that you discover is in reference to exercise. If you read any of my articles you knew it was bound to get to this subject at some point. It’s paragraph four so this is probably a personal record for me. Yes, exercise, or better yet training. I’m hoping that your primary goal in this arena is strength. I have found that with just a basic improvement in full body, multi-planar strength, a myriad
of ailments seem to disappear. It’s been proven by countless studies to be beneficial in countless ways that you don’t need me to list off but are none the less indisputable. I once had a gentleman salesperson at an unnamed homewares store tell me (even though I didn’t ask) that he didn’t exercise because it was his belief that we only have so many heart beats and he didn’t want to use them all at one time. I can’t help someone like that. No one can. The only defining moment we have a definitive amount of heart beats is the second after your last one. Until then, it’s not too late to begin a program to get stronger. Learn to plank, pull, push, rotate, squat and carry. If you practice what I consider the six foundational movement patterns, your life will get better. You can start to clear the cobwebs of immobility. No one ever wants to be limited by poor health and almost everyone has the power to do better. Train better. Feel better. Be better.

Did You Know? You’re probably not drinking enough water every day! Health experts commonly suggest you consumer 64 ounces of water a day. That’s two full Nalgene bottles.

“Learning from experience is a faculty almost never practiced.” —Barbara Tuchman MENTAL ATTITUDE: Being Lazy Shrinks Your Brain. Less active individuals appear to have smaller brains later in life. This study included 1,583 participants who took a treadmill test to rate their fitness at around age 40 and again at around age 60. After the second treadmill test, they also underwent an MRI. The results revealed those who were less physically fit during both tests had lower brain volume than those who maintained high physical fitness levels during the course of the study. Researcher Dr. Nicole Spartano writes, “From other studies, we know that exercise training programs that improve fitness may increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain and improve neuroplasticity over the short term. Over the course of a lifetime, these mechanisms may have an impact on brain aging and prevent cognitive decline in older age,” (Neurology, February 2016). Health Alert: Acetaminophen Use Before Birth Linked to Childhood Asthma. Women who experience pain, fever or the flu during pregnancy commonly use acetaminophen. Now, a new study finds that exposure to acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol, before birth and during infancy increases a baby’s risk of developing asthma during
childhood. Lead study author Dr. Maria Magnus notes, “Uncovering potential adverse effects is of public health importance, as paracetamol is the most commonly used painkiller among pregnant women and infants,” (International Journal of February 2016).

Diet: Eating Eggs Does Not Increase the Risk of Heart Disease. Researchers analyzed the dietary habits of 1,032 men and found a relatively high intake of dietary cholesterol (from eating eggs daily, for example) is not associated with an increased risk of incident coronary heart disease, not even in people genetically predisposed for higher blood cholesterol levels via the apolipoprotein E type 4 allele (APOE4 allele), which impacts cholesterol metabolism. The findings suggest that cholesterol consumption at high levels is not as dangerous to our health as is currently perceived (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, February 2016). pregnancy, women are three times more likely to develop hypertension, 1.5 times more likely to gain excessive weight, and 2.5 times more likely to give birth to a baby that is large for its gestational age. Study co-author Dr. Michelle Mottola recommends that pregnant women should aim for 10,000 steps per day during pregnancy (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, December 2015). Alternative Medicine: Manipulation for Headaches. A study that included 130 individuals compared cervical and thoracic manipulation to mobilization and exercise for the treatment of cervicogenic headaches (headaches caused by cervical dysfunction). The results of the study revealed that sixto-eight sessions of cervical and thoracic manipulation provided greater reductions in headache intensity, frequency, and duration than a course of treatment involving only mobilization and exercise. The authors of the study add that the benefits of manipulation

persisted when the patients were re-examined three months later (BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, February 2016). Wellness/Prevention: Is Ulcerative Colitis Treatable with Vinegar? A study involving mice suggests that vinegar or its main ingredient, acetic acid, may alleviate ulcerative colitis. This condition is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract that can cause abdominal pain and other symptoms. In the study, researchers found that vinegar reduced inflammation in the colon by suppressing proteins and molecular processes that trigger inflammation. They also found acetic acid exposure resulted in an increase in beneficial bacteria in the gut. The findings may lead to a simple way of treating ulcerative colitis in the future (Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, January 2016).

There are literally thousands of ways to enjoy the urban setting and world-class offerings of this truly international city. Here are a few of the attractions that make our visits to Vancouver memorable every year.
The central location of our hotel provides easy access to some of the city’s best restaurants and top attractions. The downtown core in summer is always vibrant with street vendors and festivities.
We thoroughly enjoy the month-long Celebration of Light international fireworks competition over Vancouver Harbour. Competing countries take turns turning the summer night skies into a rainbow of colors and heart-pounding thunder. The fireworks spectacular runs every weekend in July and concludes the first week of August. Lodging Galore Vancouver offers a variety of options for lodging, from modest motels on the outskirts of downtown to one of the two dozen bed and breakfasts nestled in residential neighborhoods. Our home away from home for jaunts across the 49th parallel is the Executive Hotel Le Soleil on Hornby Street discreetly tucked in the heart of the financial district between office towers, mega banks and government buildings. The four-star boutique hotel offers the definition of casual elegance. The rooms are well appointed, the staff is considerate,
Just down the street and around the corner from Le Soleil is the Vancouver Art Gallery with its distinctive exhibits by local artists. The gallery’s European collection includes paintings by Dutch masters that date back to the 17th century. The former courthouse on West Georgia Street is 41,400 square feet of galleries and exhibits that houses more than 10,000 permanent artifacts as well as plays host to traveling collections from galleries in Europe, Asia and America. The museum’s crown jewel is a permanent exhibit of works and writings by Canadian artist Emily Carr inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. vanartgallery.bc.ca Top Attraction According to TripAdvisor.com, the number one attraction in Vancouver is Stanley Park. I agree. The 1,001-acre public park adjacent to downtown is almost entirely surrounded by the waters of Vancouver Harbour and English Bay.

There are too many restaurants, too many tasty samples and not enough holes left in my belt to make a dent in the choices of edible options. Our dilemma is always whether to go back to a tried-and-true favorite or explore other culinary opportunities. Personally, I am drawn to the Granville Sports Center where they have an impressive collection of Jackie Robinson memorabilia. granvilleisland.com/discover-island/visitorsguide International Flare Of course, no reflection of a city is worth its salt unless it includes a review of its top dining establishments. The restaurant scene in Vancouver is bursting with an outstanding collection of seafood restaurants. Many of the best steakhouses in town have added sushi, sashimi and other Asian delicacies to the menu. Instead of recommending one restaurant over another, I will direct readers to the Yaletown District bordered by False Creek, Robson and Homer Streets. The area that was dominated by heavy industry and railroad tracks was given a facelift for in 1986 for Expo and is now one of the most densely populated areas of the city. Yaletown is home to trendy sidewalk cafes, breweries and popular eateries. Most of the establishments require advanced reservations, even on weeknights during the off season.

But I would be selfish if I did not mention the ONLY restaurant we’ve gone back to on multiple occasions, the Blue Water Café on Hamilton Street (about a mile walk from Le Soleil.) We normally stick to some of the chef ’s exclusive presentations of shell fish, his cioppino or a simple piece of grilled halibut. Why fool with perfection? One thing is certain. Do not ask for an extra fork if you order the chocolate cake because you will not want to share it. The city of Vancouver offers something for virtually every taste and every budget. Don’t forget your passport or enhanced driver’s license and bring a large dose of patience for the time you’ll spend waiting to cross back into Washington at the border. Dudes and Dolls By Beth Bond. Photos courtesy Craig Sebring and Dudes and Dolls. Square Dancing Experiences Revival Where can you hold hands with a different cowboy all night long? And if that doesn’t get your heart rate up, the dancing will! I’m talking about square dancing, and its experiencing a revival! Can you remember learning reels in the fifth grade? Well, this is an extension of folk music and barn dances. Parks and recreation organizations now offer classes to young and old. Some square dancing clubs go to elementary and high schools to demonstrate their skills and get the youngsters involved. They really have a lot of fun with square dancing because it’s still boys and girls together but not as regimented as learning to waltz. The kids are happy to learn something that a lot of adults don’t know. And they “whoop” it up and swing their partners just like the “pros” do. The music is great too, the rousing country/Western theme gets your feet stomping and your hands clapping. So, even if you decide to take a breather between sets, you’ll still be clapping, stomping and yelling, “Yahoo!” Dressing the part is half the fun. The guys (and gals too) wear snap-down plaid shirts, jeans and boots, of course. Square dance clubs often put on an exhibition at fairs and parades where they always receive an enthusiastic response.
