Introducing Julie Reed DIRECTOR OF WASHINGTON FOR LIVING LOCAL LOOKS FORWARD TO WORKING WITH EDMONDS COMMUNITY. BY PATTY HUTCHENS.

Let us help you develop your marketplace presence! Call Julie today!

We at Living Local Magazine are pleased to introduce Julie Reed as the new Director of our Washington operations, which currently includes Gig Harbor and Edmonds. There are many who are already familiar with the bright smile and outgoing personality of Julie, but for those who are not, I guarantee you will be soon. Julie Reed joined Living Local Magazines as our Marketing Specialist in November 2013; an addition to our team that has proved instrumental in our rapid growth.  Prior to that, she worked for eleven years in marketing where she helped businesses grow and succeed. Her passion for our magazine and community made our February 2014 launch of Gig Harbor Living Local a huge success. And there has been no stopping her since. In January the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce awarded Julie the Rookie of the Year; an award that had not existed before but one that they created to recognize her involvement in not only the Chamber but also the Gig Harbor community. Julie has brought that same enthusiasm to Edmonds with the introduction of Edmonds Living Local last month. She is sharing with the people of Edmonds the Living Local message of connecting community. Julie and her husband Mark have lived in the area for over 20 years, and together they have raised their two sons there. At the moment you meet Julie, it is evident that she is very people oriented, a result of growing up in a big family. “I have four brothers, two sons and nine nephews,” said Julie. “It makes for great pickup football games at family gatherings!” Julie is a very involved parent, with one son off to college on the east coast, she continues to volunteer for her younger son’s cross-

253.273.8524

country team as the treasurer and helps with fundraisers. “My favorite time of year is cross-country season so I can watch my son run,” said Julie. An outdoor enthusiast, Julie enjoys spending time with her family, participating in yoga, swimming and her new favorite sport – stand up paddle boarding. And it’s not just her sons who are seasoned athletes. Julie has competed in over five triathlons individually and has won two triathlons with a relay team where she participated in the swim portion. “My lungs seem to work better in the water than on land,” said Julie. Since joining the Living Local Team, Julie has worked closely with community business owners, something she thoroughly enjoys. “I enjoy the people I work with as well as the community business owners who I meet while working for Living Local.” She looks forward to introducing herself to the people of Edmonds in the upcoming months. Julie’s favorite quote gives one a glimpse into not only her success, but also her passion for what she does: “Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally”. -David Frost

GOODNEWS

Welcome Home Helping our heroes. By Beth Bond.

The big day is nearly here. You have all waited anxiously for the homecoming and now it happens! Across the tarmac or down the gangplank comes that special loved one, home from military service. But after the hugs, kisses and tears from family and friends, how do you pick up your life again as a civilian? For thousands of our returning veterans, this is a very real challenge. The world has changed while they were serving in the armed forces far from home. Who will now handle the finances and make those family decisions? Where are the jobs, and what are they qualified for? For many returning vets, both male and female, there might also be unresolved health issues to inhibit that search. A family welcoming home a veteran has as many adjustments as the veteran himself. After all, he’s not only come from a hostile climate, he’s been released from an environment where most of his or her decisions were made by the military organization. While he or she is dealing daily with the enemy, choices of health care, insurance, shelter, food, supplies and transportation were made by the U.S. government. Now, home at last, the future can look a little daunting and filled with its own

8

kind of minefield. Who is there for these vulnerable heroes? Fortunately, the returning vet is not alone. Let me introduce you to some of the movers and shakers in our community who spearhead the issues. Vets Helping Vets is just what it says, a dedicated group of retired service men and women who can help veterans cope with change. At the top of our list is Michael Schindler, a navy veteran and founder and CEO of Operation Military Family. This unique organization is dedicated to preserving the marriages of those in the service. By preparing the spouse and children for the deployment of the loved one, a greater understanding is achieved on the challenges of separation. Who will take over the finances? How about dayto-day decisions? Setting up guidelines before deployment is essential. In his book, “Operation Military Family,” Michael, himself a veteran, states: “our mission is to strengthen and enrich the lives of service members, veterans and their families.” He offers how-to advice, resources, and practical step-by-step exercises to this end. And, most

LIVINGLOCAL

important, is the knowledge that there is a whole support network out there for the returning veteran. Mike and his friends of the support network want veterans to know that you are not alone in navigating the transitions of your new life. Mike chose Edmonds as the base for Operation Military Family, the organization, because of its proximity to the Air Force Support Wing, Joint Base LewisMcChord (JBLM), and the Naval Station in Everett. From Edmonds, Mike can coordinate a raft of support agencies to effectively guide the veteran and his family to successful assimilation into civilian life in the community. Operation Military Family Cares is a non-profit organization that eagerly welcomes donations of time, money or sponsorship. And VAPP is the for-profit wing, which deals with the nuts and bolts in coordinating state and national programs of higher education and corporate counseling. Operation One Roof, founded by veteran Marine Richard Bennett, proudly joined to assist Mike and the OMF group in order to provide a clearinghouse for veteran families in transition who need a home. We all have had some experience on the exhausting and costly search for a home. But the veteran has

Here is where Dick Bennett comes in to help. He has put together a group of realtors, home inspectors, attorneys and accountants who will offer discount rates for their services and also donate 10% of their fees to the Operation Military Family organization. But, the best part is, help doesn’t stop when you get those house keys. Many times this big commitment comes with some after-sale snags, like a leaky faucet or a faulty TV hook-up. Dick refers immediately to his list of plumbers and electricians, most of whom are also veterans, who can do the job at cost and donate 10% to the continuing operation of OMF.

And what lies ahead for this dedicated group? Family counseling sessions are on the immediate horizon as is serious and practical help finding schools and job training for the next career. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the far- reaching goals of Dick Bennett and Operation One Roof. Stay tuned! Resources:

HOME & ESSENTIALS Tips & the Latest Trends

Medical Directive Basics MAKE YOUR WISHES BE KNOWN.

BY RICHARD PATRICK, JD.

Medical directives are also called physician directives or living wills. A medical directive is an advance medical instruction. It is your individual written statement of what life-sustaining medical treatments (if any) will be allowed or refused in the event you should enter into a persistent vegetative state (coma) or develop a terminal medical condition. For example, you may request that artificial nourishment and hydration be withheld if you become terminally ill without hope of recovery.

concerning your own care. Before signing a medical directive, you should ask advice from those around you that you trust. Speak to your doctor about a medical directive. Your doctor may have a blank form for you to use or to use as a guide.

The directive is used only if you have a terminal condition (documented by your physician) where life-sustaining treatment would only serve to artificially prolong the process of dying. Many directives provide that two physicians verify your condition and that they believe there is no reasonable hope of your recovery. In either situation, the directive spells out very specific treatments that are allowed to be used, or prohibited, so that you may die naturally. Almost all people allow for the use of pain medication in their medical directive. Many people provide that water or ice chips be allowed.

You can revoke a medical directive by destroying the document or executing a new one that includes the language “this medical directive supersedes all previous medical directives.

If you are at least 18 years old, of sound mind, and acting on your own free will, you may sign and execute a medical directive

10

LIVINGLOCAL

You do not need to inform anyone that you have executed a medical directive, but it is highly advised that you share the document with your doctor and your family. Ask that it be made part of your medical record.

Get a Financial Checkup ...AND BREATHE A SIGH OF RELIEF.

We schedule time for annual checkups for our health and cars, but what about finances? When was the last time you met with your financial professional? If you haven’t reviewed your financial strategy recently, it’s time for a checkup.

Either way, a financial checkup can help you breathe easier knowing you’re focused on staying financially healthy.

Even minor changes can affect your financial health.

Schedule a free financial check up today. In about an hour, a local Thrivent Financial representative can review your current financial strategy. If you’re working with another organization, you can get a free second opinion to help you decide to stay the course or consider a new direction.

Changes in your life, the economy and markets can affect your goals and the path you take to reach them. Think about the past year, did you: • Have a change in job status or income? • Get married or become single? • Have a baby, adopt or become a grandparent? • Send a child to college or adjust your life to assist an aging parent? • Buy or sell your home? • See big swings in your investments that may call for reallocation? These and other events can affect your financial health and how you prepare for the future. That’s why it’s important to have a financial checkup at least once a year. Make adjustments or stay the course? A financial checkup gives you and your financial professional the opportunity to examine where you are now, where you want to go, and how you can get there. The results may show that you’re still on track with your goals—and that’s great! If you find some adjustments are needed, you can discuss options and next steps.

Abundant Food

Even though the topic of sustainability has generated widespread attention since the 1960’s, the issues that sustainability seeks to address are as old as the advent of the industrial revolution. For the past 300 years, human expansion and subsequent use of natural resources has been accelerating at such a speed that our global ecosystem cannot recover.

PERMACULTURE: CREATING SUSTAINABLE ABUNDANT FOOD SOURCING AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT.

Still, even prior to the industrial revolution and as much as 1,000 years ago, cultural expansion and the motivation to conquer new lands were driven by the fact that many cultures had exhausted their native forests and subsequently their source of fuel and shelter. In other words, the over-use of resources is not a new issue. But, with a growing and unsustainable global population, every natural resource from forests, to farm crops, to water sources, has come into sharp focus. Many scientists are realizing that if we do not take measures to counteract this destructive cycle, we all lose.

BY SARAH POLYAKOV.

In the late 1970’s, the term permaculture was coined to describe a type of agriculture that fits seamlessly into an ecosystem and creates

12

LIVINGLOCAL

a sustainable food source for a community. During the late 1970’s, this movement gained momentum, but then quickly fizzled out as corporate agriculture became the major supplier of U.S. food sources. Now, as scientists warn us about growing environmental concerns, acquiring sustainable food sources and finding ways to reverse environmental damage is on people’s minds again. Subsequently, permaculture is making an incredibly large comeback. Bill Mollison, one of the people who brought permaculture into the national spotlight, describes it as thus: “Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted and thoughtful observation rather than protracted and thoughtless labor; and of looking at plants and animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single product system.” In more practical terms, permaculture is simply a method through which to organically farm, while maximizing contribution to the surrounding ecosystem, instead of becoming a detriment. permaculture design, will produce both an agriculture system and an ecosystem that thrives and is much greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, it goes further than the concept of leaving no footprint since it actually enhances and grows the surrounding ecosystems, including forests and watersheds.

Permaculture also has three core tenets: caring for the earth, caring for people, and returning surplus. The premise is that as humans, we must first care for the earth in ways that create abundance. Then, we must ensure that access to necessary resources is available for all. Finally, we must find ways to reduce waste, recycle, and reinvest surplus in both communities and the earth. However, these are not esoteric principles that are removed from our daily lives. Permaculture design can be leveraged well in both a ten-square foot patio garden as well as large-scale agriculture.

LIFE & COMMUNITY Local Events and Stories

Sharing Generosity ONE SIP AT A TIME.

BY MIKE TRITTIN.

14

The Northwest is home to some awesome people. We enjoy a culture that’s as unique as it is fun. We are caring, generous, smart, and fun. But most importantly, our community has a heart. It has a heart for people and helping those in need. And, believe it or not, there’s an unlikely company spearheading this generosity movement right in our backyard - a wine label. It all started with two friends having a glass of wine on a backyard porch. After spending over a year as part of Mercy Ships in Africa, Monte Regier was telling his friend, Martin Barrett, about the brokenness abroad. Most of us know the hunger crisis going on, but Monte had a first-hand look at it. And it changed his life. “You can feed a child on $1 per day,” Monte told Martin. Martin took a long glance at his

LIVINGLOCAL

wine, and as he sipped it, he responded, “So, a glass of wine can feed an orphan for a day?” Thus, Sozo Friends was born. Sozo Friends has grown to be a well respected local wine label, specializing in artisan crafted wines and food to support charitable organizations for human needs’ causes. But don’t let the cause attachment fool you, the products lead with excellence. Their wines won a Bronze, Gold and Best in Class Gold Medals at the 2011 Los Angeles International Wine Awards. They also won two Silver Medals and a Gold Medal at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Awards. In addition to their awards, Sozo is served in the finest of Northwest Restaurants including Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and the Seattle favorite, Canlis.

WWW.GOEDMONDS.COM FEBRUARY 2015

Sozo’s featured partner is Rescue:Freedom, a local organization combating human trafficking. In their words, “Rescue:Freedom exists to empower the rescue and restoration of those suffering in sexual slavery.” They’ve rescued girls and children out of brothels and mentored them through college graduation. It’s flat-out amazing the work that this local organization is doing. Check them out at (www.rescuefreedom.org) While they’ve enjoyed success in the restaurant industry, Sozo is all about creating a culture of generosity. They’ve created gift box products that allow businesses to custom-brand closing gifts, client/employee appreciation gifts, and holiday gifts — with a percentage of the proceeds going directly to the human-needs charity of the firm’s choice. In this competitive marketplace, having a cause sets your business apart. In fact, a recent survey showed that 73% of people would switch brands if a different brand of similar quality supported a good cause. Thus, local businesses are using Sozo to not only help their community, but help build their brands as well. Monte and Martin explained that in our brain we have something called the “pleasure gland,” which secretes a chemical called dopamine that creates our experience of pleasure. Interestingly, generosity can cause this! Thus, a shared generosity experience can build trust, an attachment to memory, and an increase in brand loyalty. So, it appears that being generous can help your business all while helping people locally and internationally. It doesn’t get any better than that. I had the opportunity to chat with the president of Lexus of Seattle, Brad Castonguay, who

has been using Sozo Gifts for a few months now, giving to Rescue:Freedom. Not only is he a great guy, but he has a heart for folks in need. “I’m a big believer in helping locally,” he said. Castonguay shared that providing gifts that also support non-profit groups not only benefits his customers as a great way of saying thank you, but it also exposes and educates people on the charitable organizations. “It’s great to work with an organization that allows the flexibility of choosing an organization we want to help,” he said. They’ve received a lot of positive comments from people appreciating the fact they’re getting a gift and impacting the community. Brad encourages his managers to be sure and share the story with their customers. It’s an awareness thing for Brad. And that’s the type of folks Sozo loves working with. People who get it. Sure, they see a return in brand loyalty, but they also realize that generosity is contagious and they get to be a part of building a generous community. One that loves and helps others. So, if you’re thinking about purchasing gifts, search out those businesses that also support good causes. Not only will you be building brand loyalty in your customers, but you’ll also have an opportunity to give back to your community. We in the northwest are a community of people helping people. And with neighbors like Sozo, we have another great opportunity to give back. I don’t know if it’ll ever taste so good! FAMILY VALUES Insurance is a tradition for the Campbell family. By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Insurance Services Group. It’s not very often you find someone so passionate about insurance, let alone an entire family – but then, maybe you haven’t met the Campbell family. “Insurance is complicated. We are here to help people make the very best decision so when a claim occurs, the right things happen,” said Trevor Campbell, president of Insurance Services Group, an independent insurance agency located in the heart of downtown Edmonds.

job for their customers.”

Trevor’s father, Scott Campbell, started the company in 1980 with one simple promise – ‘Always do the right thing for our clients.’ And here they are, 35 years later, making that promise the cornerstone of their success. “We wouldn’t be where we are without that kind of drive and determination to help people make great choices when it comes to their coverage,” said Trevor, who as the second generation leader and has helped shape the company their clients see today, a full service, personal and commercial insurance agency with access to nearly the entire marketplace.

Insurance Services takes the time to talk with clients, listen to their needs, understand their situations, and offers guidance to help make sure each client gets the very best coverage at the very best price. “We consistently perform reviews, removing the hassle and worry from the insurance transaction so that our clients can remain confident that the coverage is correct.”

“We work with more than 30 companies to deliver insurance policies specifically tailored for each individual need. Some of those companies include names people know: Safeco, Mutual of Enumclaw, Grange, Hartford, Travelers. We also do business with other companies that rarely advertise, but do a great

It’s tough in today’s world, when consumers are inundated with insurance ads promising to save them money. But Trevor warns that doesn’t mean the coverage is correct. That’s where ISG can make a difference. “We get to know our clients and their families,” said Trevor. “We understand what they value most and how they want to be protected when a claim occurs.”

Insurance Services truly is a family affair. Scott started the agency, Trevor leads the agency, his brother, Tyler, is an executive broker on the commercial side, and his mom, Kathy, and sister, Kelly, help with the accounting. But the emphasis this agency places on family extends well beyond the Campbell name. “We have an award winning customer service team dedicated to our clients’ needs. Our family is honored to work with such an

amazing group of people, many of whom have been with Insurance Services for a number of years. Every one of them plays a huge part in our success as a whole.” Eager to give back to the community that has made them successful, ISG partners with local organizations making a difference in the communities they serve, including Clothes For Kids, Food Lifeline, and most recently Washington Kids in Transition. “We not only get to support our community through financial contributions, but thanks to these partnerships we also look for new ways to work together.” While home base is in Edmonds, ISG also has offices in Sequim and Lacey, helping individuals, families, and business owners throughout Washington and nine other western states, make great choices on protecting the things that matter most. IN FOCUS BORROW, DISCOVER, RETURN

Enjoy walking downtown Edmonds, rain or shine. By Sarah Polyakov. If you are fortunate to stroll downtown Edmonds in the rain, you might be left seeing a good kind of green. Our downtown area is wonderfully walk-able and includes a number of stores and cafés where one can find something for everyone. While some save exploring downtown Edmonds on foot for sunny days, exploring it rain or shine has been made possible. This delightful experience, that will add a pop of green to the greyest days, is sponsored by the Edmonds Downtown Alliance. Around the downtown you will see various canisters just outside of stores that contain green umbrellas, which are free for use. The Edmonds Downtown Alliance, whose slogan for this service is “Borrow. Discover. Return.” says this service was inspired by the idea that downtown Edmonds can be enjoyed in all kinds of weather. Community members and visitors are invited to grab one of these chic green umbrellas and enjoy the downtown on foot. A few other forward thinking cities and tourist destinations are offering a similar service to their communities and tourists. Other places, such as New York City, have even come up with fun missives on umbrella etiquette. A formal public service announcement targeted to those who live in the City begged, “Please don’t wear one of those frog-umbrella hats, unless you are under five years old.” Throughout history and across cultures, there have been many different names for umbrellas that include: bumbershoot, brolly, parapluie, parasol, and in ancient Rome, umbraculum. No matter what you call it, get outdoors during the next rainy day, stroll downtown Edmonds, and don’t forget to borrow your own signature, green umbrella! Fun umbrella trivia: • In ancient Egypt evidence of use of the umbrella dates back to 1,200 BC. During this period, the umbrella was also considered a symbol of religious beliefs that were connected to the Gods of fertility and harvest, and those connected to the cycles of death and rebirth. • In 2nd century AD in China, the Emperor Wang Mang of the Han Dynasty, had an umbrella built over his carriage that was both collapsible and had moveable joints. • In ancient Greece, the parasol was a necessity for a fashionable lady during the 5th century BC. • The umbrella is featured as a common theme throughout the art carved on ancient Etruscan vases. • In the Charles Dickens novel Martin Chuzzlewit, umbrellas were referred to as gamps, after the character Mrs. Gamp. • The modern umbrella, that specifically features ribs of steel covered by fabric, was created in the late 1700s. In total, it took six inventors to create what we know as the ordinary (modern) umbrella and for their invention, it has been reported that they shared $10 million in profits.

A sense of community. That is what so many Edmonds residents say they enjoy about living here. And why not? Everywhere you turn there are people reaching out to help one another. No where was this more evident than when EdmondsWoodway High School student Jordan Rice and his older brother Brad lost their father, Cory, when he suffered a heart attack on Christmas Eve. Several years earlier their mother had succumbed to cancer. It is times like these when people struggle with wondering what they can do to help. But keeping true to the spirit that embodies this community, residents united with one another to lend their support to Jordan and Brad in any way possible. What was truly moving was the way Jordan’s own basketball teammates responded. Beckie Peterson is the president of the Edmonds-Woodway Booster Club and also has a son on the boys’ varsity basketball team. She witnessed firsthand how the boys reacted to Cory’s unexpected death. “When something like this happens, the layers of life become more real,” shared

Beckie. “Cory was a constant, quiet presence at every game.” The boys shared with one another the challenges they would face playing in their first home game following Cory’s death. After all, everyone knew there would be an empty spot in the stands where Cory had been a fixture. “It was really amazing to see these 15, 16 and 17 year olds relate and empathize with Jordan,” said Beckie. With the student and parent sections completely full, the intensity and emotion was electric. “And Jordan played the game of his life,” said Beckie. The team lost the game in the final seconds, but that did not matter. “Winning that game was not what that game was about. It was about the community helping Jordan.” During halftime the Booster Club facilitated a collection so that they could help raise money for a gift card for gas and groceries for Jordan and Brad. The response was overwhelming. And it was not just the hometown crowd that opened their wallets; the Arlington fans did as well. After the game, the Arlington team also did its part to pay their respects to Jordan. “I take my hat off to them,” said Beckie of the Arlington team and its fans. “It was quite remarkable.”

COVER STORY IT’S DOGGONE LOVE!

A recent study is neuroscience validates what canine enthusiasts have known all along. By Sarah Polyakov.

“Dogs are minor angels, and I don’t mean that facetiously. They love unconditionally, forgive immediately, are the truest of friends, willing to do anything that makes us happy.” – Jonathan Carroll When you look into the eyes of a Golden Retriever, what do you see? In those large and innocent brown eyes, I see hopefulness, playfulness, and of course love. But, perhaps the particular eyes you see reflecting love back to you are different. They may belong to a pug, a spaniel, or perhaps a terrier named Corky. No matter what breed the dog, whether bounding retriever or playful poodle, I know one thing for sure - every dog expresses or is capable of expressing unconditional love. Still, there are many who are simply not in agreement with me. Where I see love, most scientists would say that I see a figment of my imagination. Quick to accuse folks like me of anthropomorphizing animals, most scientists posit that it is only we humans who are capable of love. Just as quickly, they dismiss the canine/ human bond as an adaptive strategy solely for the acquisition of food. Happily, the results of a recent study provide us with some hopeful clues as to what dogs might be thinking. Gregory Berns, MD, PhD, who is a Distinguished Professor of Neuroeconomics at Emory University, has been able to shed light on what goes on within the canine mind.

Despite his multiple degrees and scientific training, his life-long dream had always been to answer one simple question: do dogs love us? With grants from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Berns received the funding to explore this question. Remarkably, he has been able to see for the first time what goes on in the mind of dogs by using fMRI technology. He and his staff have trained a group of canines to willingly sit inside an fMRI so that changes in the canine brain and thought patterns may be seen and measured. Since dogs ‘see’ the world through scent, changes in each canine’s cognition and emotions have been measured via the use of scent. Each dog has been presented with objects that contain the scent of their owners and also the scent of strangers. When presented with the scent of their owners, the reward center in the canine’s brain was triggered. It was found without a doubt that the dogs in the study loved their owner’s scent above any other scent. More information on these findings can be discovered in Berns’ book “How Dogs Love Us.”

Love is a Two-Way Street

How far will a dog’s love go?

Biologists, psychologists, and many physicians have known for years that humans benefit from interaction with their pets. Forward-thinking hospitals utilize dogs on cardiac wards because their presence is linked to higher survival rates in patients. This is great news for humans, but how do dogs feel about us?

If you scan the news, you can occasionally find a good news story about a dog saving the life of an owner. For example, in 2008 a dog named Maya was awarded the Dog of the Year award for saving her owner from a male attacker who sought to take the life of Maya’s owner.

Fortunately, it appears that the benefits in terms of feelings of wellbeing go both ways. A study in Sweden recently demonstrated that dogs seem to benefit emotionally as much as we humans from our relationship with them.

However, there are even more dramatic stories than these. Cecil Williams, a 61-year-old blind man from New York City, got to experience first hand how far a dog’s love will go. When he found himself in a life and death situation with only seconds to spare, his dog Orlando was put to the ultimate test. Williams, who is a diabetic, was on his way to a dental appointment when he lost consciousness and fell onto the subway tracks in Harlem. His dog Orlando followed him onto the tracks without question. On-lookers alerted the conductor to stop the subway as they yelled to an unconscious Cecil.

A study in Sweden recently demonstrated that dogs seem to benefit emotionally as much as we humans from our relationship with them.

It has also been demonstrated by other experiments that dogs are able to understand the difference between happy, distressed, and sad humans. Dogs are able to comprehend owners’ speech and pitch and respond to them in a way that seems to demonstrate empathy.

28

During the study, the hormonal levels of dogs and human volunteers were measured. When volunteers petted and interacted with the dogs in the study, both the dogs and the humans released copious amounts of oxytocin. This hormone that invokes feelings of wellbeing and bonding is also released when human loved ones hug or participate in other loving activities.

But, as the train bore over Cecil and Orlando, everyone turned away, shrieking in horror. To everyone’s surprise and after the train passed over the pair, witnesses found that Orlando was next to his master in the middle of the track. Somehow, they were positioned so that the subway had passed over both of them and master and dog remained completely unharmed.

This type of canine loyalty is far from being a recent occurrence. Let’s take for example the legendary loyalty of a Japanese dog named Hachiko. Each day, Hachiko would accompany his master to the Shibuya train station and wait for his master to come back from his work at the University of Tokyo. This daily act of loyalty occurred for years, even after his master died. Up until the day Hachiko died, he could be found waiting for his master in the same spot. Today a statue stands in his place to commemorate this act of loyalty that transcends both time and culture. Martin Luther once noted, “The dog is the most faithful of animals and would be much esteemed were it not so common. Our Lord God has made His greatest gifts the commonest.” This Valentine’s Day, lets endeavor to create a love that is more inclusive and recognize that the affection that all of us seek may already be laying near a warm fire and right beside our feet. FAR LEFT Dogs really are man’s best friend.

Valentine’s Day A HOW-TO GUIDE.

Ah yes, Valentines Day, both beloved and dreaded by many. I’ve planned extravagant dates, wallowed in my singleness, and one year grabbed beers with buddies before seeing Die Hard. This year, several friends have asked my opinion on how they should plan to spend their day, thus inspiring me to write this little “how-to guide.” Ladies

BY MIKE TRITTIN.

I know we don’t seem so simple, but we value you more than you think we do. Guys don’t normally think Valentine’s Day is about them at all; holidays surrounded by the marketing of roses and chocolate don’t really speak to anything “macho.” Thus, something special for your guy goes a long way. • What’s important to him? Golf? Football? Movies? Do something that you know is specifically special to him. Maybe it’s concert tickets or cooking dinner for him and two buddies while they watch the game. Support something important to him; it’ll go a long way. • Do something that tells him you value and support him. Knowing that our sweetheart believes in us is huge. We crave respect and appreciation.

LIVINGLOCAL

Gentlemen Guys, this is your chance to “wow” your sweetheart. • Plan Ahead - Don’t do what I did and wait until the last minute to make a reservation. You won’t get one, and you’ll end up eating Taco Time (trying to spark up some romance with massive heartburn is next to impossible). Make a reservation early at a spot you know she’ll love. Do your research if you need to; her friends will tell you what she likes. • Do Something Special - After dinner, take a walk. Have a wine/dessert picnic at a pre-planned bonfire. Stay away from clichè. Do something nobody’s ever done for her before. Making memories is key. • Think Different for Gifts - Listen for clues on what she’d like as a gift. Maybe she needs new boots, a replacement watch, or has been mentioning how she wished she could go for a spa day. Take notes and show you’ve been listening; you’ll be shocked at how well this will pay off for you. Oh, and always accompany it with flowers. Tips to Keep You Healthy

Working Out IT’S NOT JUST GOOD FOR YOUR BODY.

ARTICLE PROVIDED BY SNAP FITNESS.

Many of us start hitting the gym to trim off a few extra inches and be physically healthier. But how about sweating to improve your mind and mood? “Exercise is the single best thing you can do for your brain in terms of mood, memory, and learning,” says Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John Ratey, author of the book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. “Even 10 minutes of activity changes your brain.” If you need a little extra incentive to lace up those sneakers and hit the gym, here are five ways that exercise can boost your brainpower. • Reverses the detrimental effect of stress - In this day and age, who doesn’t have a little stress in their life? Jumping on the

treadmill or cross trainer for 30 minutes can blow off tension by increasing levels of “soothing” brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. What’s fascinating, though, is that exercise may actually work on a cellular level to reverse stress’s toll on our aging process, according to a 2010 study from the University of California-San Francisco. The researchers found that stressed-out women who exercised vigorously for an average of 45 minutes over a threeday period had cells that showed fewer signs of aging compared to women who were stressed and inactive. Working out also helps keep us from ruminating “by altering blood flow to those areas in the brain involved in triggering

33

us to relive these stressful thoughts again and again,” says study coauthor Elissa Epel, an associate professor of psychiatry at UCSF. • It lifts depression - Research suggests that burning off 350 calories three times a week through sustained, sweat-inducing activity can reduce symptoms of depression about as effectively as antidepressants. That may be because exercise appears to stimulate the growth of neurons in certain brain regions damaged by depression. What’s more, animal studies have found that getting active boosts the production of brain molecules that improve connections between nerve cells, thereby acting as a natural antidepressant. And a 2010 study found that three sessions of yoga per week boosted participants’ levels of the brain chemical GABA, which typically translates into improved mood and decreased anxiety. Yoga can be used to complement-not substitute-drug treatment for depression, the researchers said. • It improves learning - Exercise increases the level of brain chemicals called growth factors, which help make new brain cells and establish new connections between brain cells to help us learn. Interestingly, complicated activities like playing tennis or taking a dance class provide the biggest brain boost. “You’re challenging your brain even more when you have to think about coordination,” explains Ratey. “Like muscles, you have to stress your brain cells to get them to grow.” Complicated activities also improve our capacity

to learn by enhancing our attention and concentration skills, according to German researchers who found that high school students scored better on highattention tasks after doing 10 minutes of a complicated fitness routine compared to 10 minutes of regular activity. (Those who hadn’t exercised at all scored the worst.). • Builds self-esteem and improves body image - You don’t need to radically change your body shape to get a confidence surge from exercise. Studies suggest that simply seeing fitness improvements, like running a faster mile or lifting more weight than before, can improve your self-esteem and body image.

Test Results Test takers scored higher on highattention tasks after doing 10 minutes of a complicated fitness routine.

BELOW The benefits of exercise can be seen year round.

• Leaves you feeling euphoric - Yes, that “runner’s high” really does exist if you’re willing to shift into high-intensity mode. Ratey recommends sprint bursts through interval training. Run, bike, or swim as fast as you can for 30 to 40 seconds and then reduce your speed to a gentle pace for five minutes before sprinting again. Repeat four times for a total of five sprints. “You’ll feel really sparkly for the rest of the day,” he says. Who wouldn’t want to feel like that? With of these benefits, who wouldn’t want to work out year round? That’s one of the reasons we at Snap Fitness are open 24/7. We want you to be able to take advantage of all of the great benefits of a good workout on your time schedule. Good for the body AND the brain!

You’re challenging your brain even more when you have to think about coordination. Like muscles, you have to stress your brain cells to get them to grow.

Fall In Love COMMITMENT BEGINS WITH YOURSELF.

BY TERESA PESCE.

An Uncomfortable Equation

(but

true)

When a man is in love, he will swim the deepest ocean or climb the highest mountain to be with his beloved. When he isn’t, he suggests they meet at the restaurant. Object lesson observed: The level of commitment equals the level of effort deemed reasonable. When someone is not in love, here’s how he or she thinks: “What? Take you to the airport? Why - is something wrong with your car?” By contrast, here’s how they think when they’re in love: “It seems obvious and reasonable to take you to the airport, wait with you until your plane boards, and then wave goodbye until it disappears on the horizon.” Again: The level of commitment equals the level of effort deemed reasonable. In the get-in-shape world, this translates to: “What? Get up at 5:15 a.m. to be at the gym by 6am so I can work out before work? I need my sleep!” Or – “What? Join an exercise group? Endure the group pressure, cram one more thing into my schedule?” These options seem unreasonable. The awful truth: The fault is not with the exercise options, dear ones; it’s in our low level of commitment to ourselves. Hmmm. You could try turning that around. You could make a loving commitment to yourself and then consider it completely reasonable to go out of your way for yourself. Exercise would be an obvious and reasonable priority. You’d think it easy to make good food in advance, store it in handy containers, making it as convenient to grab as a bowlful of cereal and a lot better for you. Go for it – declare your undying love for yourself and then go the extra mile for you! How can you love others as you love yourself, if you don’t love yourself first? Marry YOU.

your shirt down over your hips? What tape measure, scale, standard, trend or opinion are you measuring yourself against? Really, let’s all stop and breathe. If you, personally – you yourself – want to change, I’m rummaging through memorabilia boxes for my pom-poms even as we speak. But what I don’t like is the pressure-cooker atmosphere of pressure-change. You can’t be your former young self any more than you can be your future older self. Middle-aged you, right now, is the only one you have to work with, work on, or work for. It may sound esoteric or silly, but if you love yourself forward, you’ll move forward. If you get behind yourself and push or berate yourself forward, you’ll resist. You are so good-looking that I, for one, can hardly stand it. I want to be like you when I grow up. Go, YOU!

Caught in the Dark?

Gail’s weight fluctuated up and down. And, after menopause, mostly up. Recent blood sugar levels had revealed that she was just shy of being officially branded diabetic. Thoughts of an impending cascade of life changes left her dismayed and apprehensive. Gail knew how important staying active was to maintaining a full and vital life.

STEPPING OUT OF THE SHADOW OF DIABETES.

Over the years, however, joint and muscle pain had steadily increased to the point where she didn’t feel comfortable enough to enjoy a few rounds of golf or daily walks in the neighborhood. She needed a way to help herself feel good enough to be active enough to lose that extra weight.

BY TERRI ROSSI.

Gail was determined to avoid the same path of other family members who had developed type 2 diabetes. Through their experiences with the disease, Gail knew that some drugs used to control diabetes, such as Metformin, had nasty side effects. They could impair the absorption of vitamin B12 and create myelin sheath damage resulting in walking difficulties, muscle aches, numbness and memory loss. Worse, her mother had fought and lost the battle with diabetes—first losing a leg to amputation and then her life to unchecked infections the following year. Gail was

Together, they decided to open Café Louvre just two years ago. Haifa has formed a close relationship with her customers who love interacting with her and her staff. Haifa’s friendly nature is something the patrons all look forward to on their visits. And it is those customers to whom Haifa attributes her success. By hiring the right people and listening to her customers’ suggestions, they all have helped make Café Louvre become what it is today. “Even if I’m the best business person, with no support, I would fail,” said Haifa gratefully. Café Louvre has a fun and relaxing environment and also offers meeting space for people to gather for lunch meetings or after hours as well. It simply requires a reservation by calling 425.640.8188. Haifa and her husband have two children, a boy and a girl, who attend Edmonds Woodway High School. As a family they enjoy hiking, traveling and taking in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Wishing to give back to the community, Haifa enjoys hosting events at Café Louvre including hosting high school students for events and hosting book readings and signings. Cooking without onions is like trying make a BLT without the tomato -- it’s possible to fill the void with something else, but you’ll probably feel like you’re missing something. Plus, now that it’s time to put on layers and nestle up to a fire, winter recipes are a’brewing, and they’re full of tasty onions! Yellow onions, in particular, that are harvested during cold weather months are perfect for roasts, soups, slow-cooked dishes and other winter favorites. Specifically, yellow onions are ideal for these applications to help build flavor profiles because of their robust, savory taste. Whether headlining a dish, such as french onion soup, or playing a more subtle, supporting role, like meatloaf with onions, this vegetable lends itself to a variety of uses, making onions about as flexible as a yoga master. Regardless of how you use the staple vegetable, onions offer a great deal of nutritional value, and they are associated with lower risks of heart disease and cancer.

They are added to flavor risotto, pasta dishes, soups and stews. They also make a nice side dish to meats, poultry, and fish.

DESTINATIONNORTHWEST

Lotsa Lochsa A wild four-season adventure. By Jessica Herbig.

Nestled in the Lolo Mountains in rustic central Idaho, close to the Montana border, is a beautiful lodge. It’s a place where you can while away your day soaking in some natural hot springs and relaxing while you escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can find Lochsa Lodge in Idaho, 57 miles west of Missoula, Montana on U.S. Highway 12, over the Lolo Pass on the Idaho/Montana state line.

is located just 20 miles west of the Lodge. Each are natural backcountry hot springs that are accessible year-round by a short drive and a 1.5 mile hike.

Rich in history, the original Lodge was built in 1929 as a commercial hunting lodge. The area is what was once considered the heart of some of the wildest country in the lower 48 states.

Weir sits up on a rock ledge, overlooking the creek and a beautiful old-growth glade of cedar, fir and pine. Both springs provide wonderful opportunities to observe wildlife while soaking away your cares.

A chimney fire destroyed the old historic lodge in 2001, but construction began immediately on a new lodge made of hand-scribed logs. The new building includes a library/meeting space, river view deck, gift shop, dining room and tavern. There are no guest rooms in the main Lodge, but a series of smaller lodges and cabins are available surrounding the main building to give a variety of options for every budget. The Lochsa Lodge is open every day, year-round, including holidays, with a restaurant on-site that runs the same hours, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner alongside amazing views. A major draw of the Lochsa Lodge is the natural hot springs that occur in the area. Jerry Johnson Hot Springs is located just 10 miles west of the Lodge, and Weir Creek Hot Springs

44

Jerry Johnson has a series of pools alongside Warm Springs Creek, several of which mingle the hot water with cool water in creek-side pools. Several other pools sit up from the creek to provide a variety of options.

Early spring brings whitewater to the Lochsa River. The river is known for its world-class whitewater rafting and kayaking. There are many guided trips in the area that are available May through June, and there are packaged “Raft and Relax” deals with the Lodge. Call the Lochsa Lodge at 208.942.3405 for more information. July through September offer up horseback trail rides from the Lodge. This adventure will bring you along some of Lewis & Clark’s famous journey, as well as allow you to see where the Nez Perce traveled through on their way to their buffalo hunting grounds in Montana.
