EXTENDED CARE ... WHAT’S YOUR STRATEGY? You may think you’ll never need extended care. But what would happen if you took the chance and weren’t prepared for the consequences? Extended care may affect your family members: • Emotionally, as they juggle time between you and their families. • Physically, especially if they are your caregivers. • Financially, by potentially depleting your savings and their inheritance. A strategy for your care could be the best gift you’ve ever given your family. Contact me today to learn more.

PUBLISHER Make it Different This Year IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE we are welcoming in 2016. It does not seem that long ago when people were stocking their shelves, fearful of what the year 2000 would bring. Here we are 16 years later, and while a lot has changed much has remained the same. One thing that never seems to change is the traditional New Year’s resolution. The statistics of those who actually stick with theirs is astounding – only 8 percent. So why not make a goal this year to do something attainable and fun. There are countless civic organizations in our community. Why not plan to attend one each month? It is a great way to connect with others in town and find out about local events.

CHANGING KIDS’ LIVES EDMONDS BOYS & GIRLS CLUB MAKING A DIFFERENCE

DID YOU KNOW THAT through membership and community outreach, the Boys & Girls Clubs annually serve nearly four million young people in over 4,100 Club facilities throughout the country and BGCA-affiliated Youth Centers on U.S. military installations worldwide? That is quite an accomplishment, and during a time of great need for positive reinforcement for our country’s youth, the importance of what the Club does is more important than ever. Boys Clubs of Snohomish County began in 1946 to help young boys spend their idle time in constructive athletic and social activities. They have come a long way since then! The Boys & Girls Club of today has several locations throughout Snohomish County, including Edmonds. The Edmonds Club was the third Boys & Girls Club in Snohomish County. The current building was built in the 1920s and became the Edmonds Boys & Girls Club in 1968. The

Club’s purpose is to provide youth between the ages of 5 and 18 a safe, positive and fun environment with a variety of activities. The Healthy Habits program has been around for several years across the country and has different elements to it, depending on the Club hosting the programs. The Edmonds Boys & Girls Club focuses its Healthy Habits program on sports and nutrition. Sports are throughout the year, except during the summer when they have day camp programs. The nutrition portion of the Healthy Habits program is held in the spring. The Club of today is not just about keeping idle minds and bodies busy. It is important to remember that youth centers may well be the stepping stone that many children need to remain engaged with their health and education. The Healthy Habits program is completely free to families, and they receive a yearlong Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish

County membership. According to an article written by Laura Altobelli, MS for Livestrong.com earlier this year, in 2002 the California Department of Education examined whether any correlation existed between standardized test scores and results from a state-mandated physical fitness exam. In its analysis of data from over 954,000 fifth, seventh and ninth grade students, the study found that students with higher levels of fitness performed better in school. Students who met three or more physical fitness standards experienced the greatest academic gains. This is seen again and again, that the cognitive benefits of team sports and other programs are paramount to engagement for children. The Healthy Habits sports program provides the opportunity for developing team building skills. These skills are critical in every stage of a child’s life and build self-worth, leading to

strong self-esteem. It is equally as critical to leadership growth, which is needed at every stage of development and makes transitions in life much easier for children as they become young adults and on to adulthood. “At a recent lacrosse game, we brought the group together for a cheer, but before I could even get it going, a couple of older sixth graders took the lead and led the younger kids in the cheer. These particular kids have been in our program for a couple years, and they are now to the point where they lead the younger kids and are positive role models for them. It is really exciting to see their growth over the years,” said Kelli Calvin, Edmonds Boys & Girls Club Healthy Habits Director. Sports teach critical thinking skills and hand-eye coordination too, and are just plain fun! Children must believe that thinking is fun and want to be good at it. Playing sports provides a great opportunity for this important life skill to develop. The Edmonds Boys & Girls Club takes pride in teaching good sportsmanship which lends itself to healthy personal growth and only healthy competition is allowed. “I am grateful for the after school sports programs. My kids have been involved in cross-country and now lacrosse, and I am totally impressed with the amazing level of community engagement achieved through these programs. My kids adore their coach, and we are all grateful to have been given the opportunity to be part of something really special,” said (parent) Kristen NyQuist. With parent schedules being hectic and transportation always being a problem, the Edmond’s Club (as well as all others) has the sports program for Healthy Habits at six sites in the Edmonds school district: Westgate Elementary, Lynndale Elementary, Sherwood Elementary, Cedar Valley Community School, Edmonds Boys and Girls Club and Edmonds Elementary.

The Healthy Habits sports program runs year round. Rugby starts in February and goes through March. Track and field is in the spring, during April and May. October and November is the fall cross-country program and there were nearly 130 children enrolled. Lacrosse season is now running and has almost 160 enrolled. Each season is about six to eight weeks long. They consist of practice twice a week and then three Saturdays of games or meets. At each practice the children are given a healthy snack, and get a chance to be active with their friends.

Reviewing Your Estate

IT’S ANOTHER NEW YEAR and if you’re like me, resolutions have slowly, or quickly, been broken. But here’s a resolution that you should keep.

The trust then requires the surviving spouse to place one half of all community property in an irrevocable trust. The intention of the trust was to protect the estate from federal taxes.

RESOLVE TO REVIEW YOUR LEGAL AND FINANCIAL DOCUMENTS

As you prepare for the next year, think about making sure your legal and financial house is in order. If you were to have a serious accident or get ill, would there be someone to manage your affairs until you recover? Do you have a will that is 10, 15, 20 years old? Have things changed in your life – marriage, divorce, children, grandchildren? Have you retired recently? Moved to Edmonds from another state?

At the time these types of trust were established, estates of over $600,000 were subject to federal estate tax. As of 2015, the federal estate tax exemption amount has increased to $5,430,000. In addition, a decedent’s estate may elect to pass any of the decedent’s unused exemption to the surviving spouse. This means that, for a married couple, the total federal estate tax exemption amount is $10,860,000. Trusts like these, which were so popular back in the 1990s, are no longer practical for most couples.

BY ATTORNEY PEGGY SANDERS

All of these situations can affect your estate plan. It doesn’t take a lot of time to pull out those estate documents and read them over to make sure they still do what you want. If you have an IRA, 401(k), life insurance, or other assets that pass automatically at your death, make sure that the beneficiary you named is still the one you want. Another thing to look at is whether the estate documents you signed years ago are still necessary. Sometimes clients come to our office with trust documents that they created in the 1990s. Under these trusts, when the first spouse passes away, the trust requires the surviving spouse to divide the couple’s estate into a survivor’s portion and a decedent’s portion.

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

10

If you are lucky and frugal enough to have an estate worth more than $2 million, the State of Washington may collect an estate tax after your death on the amount over $2 million. If you have assets worth more than $2 million or $5 million, you may want to work with an estate planning attorney to reduce the potential for taxation. If you don’t have assets worth more than $2 million, you may want to consider whether your trust from the 1990s still meets your needs and goals. An attorney can help you review your documents and make any changes that might be appropriate or save your heirs money.

Discussing the Future SHARE YOUR FINANCIAL AND CARE INVENTORY WITH THOSE WHO NEED TO KNOW

ARTICLE COURTESY THRIVENT FINANCIAL

EACH YEAR, THOUSANDS of Americans are thrust into the uncomfortable role of making long-term care decisions for their family members. These emotional decisions may create stressful situations for the entire family in addition to being time-consuming and expensive. Fortunately, there is a way to help reduce the stress connected to these situations: communication. Discussing plans for longterm care before the need arises can greatly reduce the stress that may arise while dealing with an illness or disability. Raising the subject may create some momentary awkwardness for both parents and their adult children. However it is far better to discuss long-term care options ahead of time and together decide what makes the most sense for the family. Thrivent Financial recommends that families ask certain questions regarding a long-term care strategy: • Where and how you would like care delivered, if you were to need it. • The level of independence you’d like to maintain. • The role you’d like your family to play in your care. • How you want to fund your care, while protecting your assets. Clear communication can help eliminate the problem of catching a spouse or adult child off guard. It can also help eliminate the burden of uncertainty with difficult decisions. Spelling out the location of important documents, as well as care wishes, ensures that family members have the information they need to provide for their loved one’s desired care. Create a financial and care inventory It is also important to update family members on the location and status of financial and care documents. Having an inventory of these documents provides family members with a roadmap to critical information. It is focused on the “where” information on financial

holdings is located; not specific details about the financial holdings. The inventory is not a legal document, and it need not divulge personal or confidential details you are not prepared to share. It should, however, enable loved ones to quickly locate where you keep your financial, legal, care and legacy records should a crisis occur. This inventory should be updated at least annually, and copies given to family members - a lawyer or executor – or placed in a secure location where those who might need it can access it. While each family’s inventory will differ, the inventory should include information related to where someone can find the following: • Living wills/health care directives • Insurance and other contracts (health, life, long-term care, annuities, auto, homeowners, etc.)

The Glaring Deficiency HOMEOWNER INSURANCE

BY TREVOR CAMPBELL, PRESIDENT, INSURANCE SERVICES GROUP

NEARLY EVERYONE BUYS homeowner insurance for their home. It’s required by mortgage companies and generally accepted as the responsible protection for what many consider to be their most valuable investment. Homeowner insurance policies provide excellent protection against a variety of common losses. However, they do not provide protection from one of the most damaging and most likely events expected to affect us all! The Threat is Real Scientists warn that we are overdue for a major (6.0 or larger) earthquake in the Puget Sound area, and it could happen at any time. In fact, at some point in the next 50 years, they warn a magnitude 9.0 earthquake may rock the Pacific Northwest. Emergency management experts say if it does, it could be the most costly and most destructive disaster in the country. Like floods and landslides, earthquakes are major events that leave widespread damage but are not covered by a homeowner policy. This limitation in coverage is a glaring deficiency, and yet only about 10 percent of homeowners choose to protect their home by purchasing earthquake insurance. While

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

12

it is true earthquake coverage can be expensive, it’s an investment more homeowners have started to consider. Homeowners have several options when they buy earthquake coverage. Some may be able to purchase it from the same company that provides their homeowner insurance. Others may consider using a specialized earthquake insurance provider. In many cases, we recommend earthquake policies that also include damage caused by landslides and mudflows, both equally concerning given the number of homes in our community on hillsides and slopes. Earthquake insurance policies are not standardized, so here are some things to keep in mind: • What do you want to insure? A homeowner can choose to purchase insurance for just the structure. They can also purchase additional coverage to protect belongings inside the home, as well as unattached structures like garages. Other important coverages may include additional living expenses, especially if the home is severely damaged. Keep in mind, major events may leave many people

in need of temporary housing and it can cost more than anticipated. • Are there limitations or exclusions? Flooding, tidal waves and tsunamis, even when caused by an earthquake, are not necessarily covered by earthquake insurance. Every policy is different and includes different exclusions. Be sure to read each policy before making a decision. • What are the deductibles? Typically speaking, earthquake insurance only pays for damages that exceed the deductible.

While it is true earthquake coverage can be expensive, it’s an investment more homeowners have started to consider.

We often see deductibles starting at $500 all the way up to 25 percent of a home’s total value. Think what those percentages mean in real dollars and choose your deductible wisely from the available options. Knowing the risk of an earthquake and understanding your insurance options is critical. Working with an independent insurance agent who has access to multiple carriers is the only way to find the right products to fit your individual needs while ensuring what matters most to you and your family is properly protected. Trevor Campbell is the President of Insurance Services Group, an Edmonds based independent insurance agency serving clients throughout Washington and seven other Western States. He chairs the Washington Education Committee for the National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research. He is a Past President for the Professional Insurance Agents Association of Washington and Alaska and was the 2013 Agent of the Year.

LIFE & COMMUNITY

Your Chamber of Commerce BENEFITS ARE MORE THAN YOU MAY REALIZE

BY BETH BOND

DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE has been a businessman’s association in Edmonds for more than 100 years? According to current Chamber of Commerce president, Greg Urban, that first group of businessmen started as “The Edmonds Board of Trade” in 1904. By 1907, they had formally reorganized into the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce. I wonder what was discussed in those early days. There were no patrol cars to keep the peace. In fact, there was a mounted volunteer group of caring citizens to help those caught in rising water or storm damage. Edmonds was a lumber mill town then, with more

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

14

saloons than churches. Rather than plan the Edmonds Classic Car Show, the chamber of those early days probably promoted church picnics and barn dances. But the mission statement is the same now as it was then – “promoting the economic vitality of Edmonds through advocacy, leadership, education and community-building events.” In addition to owning or managing a business, chamber members are civic-minded leaders who really care about the community. Far above a profit motive, these individuals feel a social obligation to their neighbors. They work collectively to ensure a safe environment in the city and to entertain and inform the general public. Here is where we see the

difference between a business association of financial leaders and the city with a thriving and energetic chamber whose widespread interests and ideas unite and flourish with the whole community. Although a chamber meeting does involve networking among organizations and individuals and provides an opportunity to meet and greet business owners, it really is much more than that. The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce boasts 420 members, many of whom meet every Wednesday morning to enjoy a lively program. From a slide presentation on the planning of a marine rescue center to a movie on the eclectic courses provided by a local school, the variety is endless. The audience is entertained and informed. Meetings are open to the public, each Wednesday morning at 7:30 at Fairwinds Brighton Court, where a continental breakfast is provided.

chamber follows up with a welcome package. This contains the prized directory of all our Edmonds’ establishments, from the art galleries to Zumba classes, and an invitation to attend a meeting of the chamber. Becoming a new member offers the bonus of a “Grand Opening Ribbon-cutting” announcement from the chamber as well. When you decide to become a member of the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce, even more doors open to encourage your success. Chances abound to sponsor an event or activity and regular chamber attendance ensures recognition in the community, and by meeting other leaders in the city, a foundation of mutual support is assured. From a start-up loan to life insurance for employees, to using a realtor to find a new home, meeting people at the chamber means reliable friends and dependable allies in the Edmonds community.

The Edmonds Chamber of Commerce has a much larger, on-going focus however, and that is to plan and execute fundraising activities for the entire community. Annually, the chamber sponsors a tree-lighting event to highlight the arrival of Santa, the Trick or Treat Block Party, the Fourth of July parade, 5K run and fireworks, and of course, The Taste of Edmonds. The Taste of Edmonds is the Chamber’s biggest fundraiser where the community is invited to try out the many food offerings of our city’s restaurants. This past year, a huge rainstorm dashed the plans of many who came to hear the great bands playing on stage. And so, on January 31, your favorite groups, like the Beatniks and Joe Slick, will perform a benefit concert – A Taste of the Taste.

When I polled members and guests at a recent chamber meeting to ask what they gained from their membership, I was surprised at the variety of answers. Of course, there is the social ambiance of conversing over that first cup of coffee and pastry, and the program or speaker is informative, but some people said they really liked, “being-in-the-know” about upcoming events. This makes you an expert on your city. Friends and neighbors seek you out for information on the city’s activities and events. And, the opportunity to get behindthe- scenes as a volunteer for your favorite event means a “win/win” for Edmonds!

You can help the chamber recover from their loss last August by purchasing tickets directly from the Edmonds Center for the Arts for the 6pm performance. Normally, the Edmonds community can count on nearly $25,000 donated each year by the chamber. Our organizations of gardeners, musicians and thespians depend on the chamber to help publicize their events and offer both monetary support and capacity attendance.

FAITH, FAMILY AND GENEROSITY IMAGINE WORKING IN A PROFESSION you love and being able to give back to the community at the same time. It is a rare opportunity and one that financial advisor Merrillee Bradshaw said she is blessed to be able to do. Bradshaw is an advisor for Thrivent Financial. Unlike most financial companies, Thrivent is a Christian based company whose principles are founded on the belief that money is a tool one uses to strengthen one’s family, church and community. “Thrivent Financial is member-owned, and therefore we do not pay corporate taxes on the Fraternal side of our business,” explained Bradshaw. “We instead take the money that would have been spent on those taxes and put it in the hands of our members, and they individually choose a nonprofit from a list of thousands to gift it to.” Through this, Thrivent members have provided about half of the operating expenses for Habitat for Humanity each year. Through Thrivent Financial, Bradshaw has been able to devote some of her time and resources to make a difference in the live of others. She volunteers with Esther’s Place in Everett, a day shelter for homeless women and children. Bradshaw adds that she, and other members, can apply for two $250 grants each year to use in their community to do either a fundraiser or a service project. These are called Action Teams. It is a value that echoes her own passion of giving to others. “Our motto is live generously.” In her work with people of all age groups and economic status, Bradshaw guides her clients through the path to financial security. “We are unique in that we believe in protecting the family first,” said Bradshaw. She consults with her clients to make sure that before investing any of their funds, the family is set up for the unexpected. That means having ample savings for emergency situations, life insurance and disability coverage, as well as paying off consumer debt. “You need to have those protection pieces in place” said Bradshaw. One of the most common issues she sees among people is the lack of planning and the nonexistence of a budget. “Whether you make $20,000 or $250,000 annually, people need to be smart about their money,” said Bradshaw. Bradshaw and Thrivent have certain financial principles that they incorporate into their personal and professional lives. Those principles are: • • • • •

CREMATIONS

EDMONDS

IN FOCUS Edmonds Living Local is grateful to the community BY BETH BOND

GRACIAS, MERCI, MAHALO. There are so many ways to say “thank you, and they all express gratitude for what you did or who you are. The writers, publisher and staff of Edmonds Living Local want to give our heartfelt thanks to the Edmonds community for helping us complete a successful first year. Yes, this January issue marks one year of highlights of the Edmonds city calendar. We reported what was out there, and you responded with gusto, attending and participating in everything from the Clothes for Kids Campaign to the Sam Beckett 5K run. And we learned right along with you about the need for defibrillators at every school. The Nick-of-Time Foundation has thrived with your generous donations and has nearly reached that goal. We also reluctantly realized that many children in our school district are homeless and hungry. Groups such as The Nourishing Network and Kids in Transition showed us that a caring community can make an immediate difference in young lives. They work behind the scenes to ensure that every day needy school children will have the food they need to learn and play. We did a number of stories on our military community and supporting the returning veteran with practical, emotional and financial strategies. Only by focusing on this ongoing need can we hope to feel confident that the men and women who fought for our freedom can achieve a gracious and supportive homecoming. VAPP.com is the website which offers the veteran a simple and direct route to available resources, developed by veterans for veterans. Edmonds is a city that is thriving with the vitality and energy that new businesses provide. Dozens of new places opened this year alone. And some of our old favorites remodeled and expanded. We attempted to share it all with you. The iconic building that once housed antiques became the first art museum in Snohomish County. The Cascadia Art Museum brings visitors from all over to see the artwork of northwest artists of the 1900s.

THE MONTH Kendall Le Compte Senior Kendall Le Compte has been a team player most of her life, and it’s something that she would not trade for anything. A cheerleader for the past three years, Kendall previously competed in gymnastics for 10 years. “My favorite part about cheer is being on a team that supports the school. Growing up in gymnastics, being a team is all that I know,” shared the 17-year-old. Her cheer team has competed and performed at state the past two years and placed third last year. But it is not just in cheerleading that Kendall excels, she also participates in National Honor Society and maintains a GPA of 3.7. Kendall said she plans to attend a fouryear university but is unsure if she will

continue with cheer, but will consider it if the opportunity presents itself. As for a career path, Kendall said both business and education interest her. Kendall shared that she struggled this year with a change of coaches, and it changed the dynamics of the team. “A lot of learning is involved, but it has turned out to be pretty fun. I love both coaches and do my best to support both of them,” said Kendall. As she goes through life, Kendall said she will take with her an important lesson she has learned through both cheer and gymnastics. “I have learned how important it is to keep trying and giving all you’ve got, even when all else fails.”

Ebrima Fatty Senior Ebrima Fatty gives much credit for his success to his coaches. “They have shaped who I am as a person and have helped me through so much in this sport,” said the wrestler. “The biggest lesson I learned from them is to compete with myself, don’t worry about other people and do things to the best of my ability.” A former football and soccer player, Ebrima is currently focusing all of his efforts on wrestling. He placed seventh at the state tournament last year and is taking IB classes and is a member of the Black Student Union. Ebrima said wherever he attends school he will pursue a degree in something related to law enforcement – possibly a criminal justice degree with the goal of becoming a lawyer.

Plus, take advantage of exclusive offers available only at this event!

He has yet to decide if he will continue to wrestle, but he has enjoyed the opportunity to do so in high school, especially the mental toughness and brotherhood that comes with being part of the team. “I love being around my teammates and the sport brings us so much closer. Some of my best friends wrestle with me and we go through the grind together,” he said. As for winning state this year, he is working hard to achieve that. “I came into the wrestling program without much direction, and now I am chasing a goal that seemed like something impossible four years ago,” said Ebrima.

Although, take note, that this lineup is subject to change from now until January. This concert will go towards benefiting the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce and The Taste of Edmonds, hence the name, “A Taste of

The Taste.” Due to some poor weather on the first day of A Taste of Edmonds, the chamber had to close the event early for the safety of the vendors, entertainers, volunteers and guests. Although the last two days went off without a hitch, the loss of revenue on the first day of the event severely damaged the annual operations budget for the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce.

the chamber faced. They also just want to put on a great show, have a fun night and play for one of their favorite communities – the people of Edmonds.

“Revenue from the benefit concert will allow us to continue to operate until the 2016 event revenue begins to get collected,” said CEO and President of the Chamber, Greg Urban.

The doors will open at 5pm and tickets can be purchased at the door, if availability permits. You can also purchase tickets in advance, online at www.edmondscenterforthearts.org. Tickets in advance are $30 or $40 at the door.

With that being said, the bands that had to be canceled on that Friday have come together in support of the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce and are performing a benefit concert to help regain some of the losses that

Cascadia Subduction Zone Earthquake What you need to know to be prepared “EVERY PLACE AND IN every day of living there are hazards, and people are very bad at sorting out what are the most dangerous.” That’s what Bill Steele, seismologist and spokesman for the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, said addressing the response of the public after the New Yorker article, “The Really Big One,” came out in July 2015. The article painted ugly scenes of “unrecognizable” regions along the West Coast, explaining that nearly 13,000 people would die and 1 million would be displaced after the historic earthquake. One of the more dramatic quotes saying that “everything west of Interstate 5 would be toast.” According to Steele, who lives just eight blocks east of Interstate 5, he’s not any safer than those to the west, but certainly no one will be toast. But the “really big one,” of which the article is referring to, is a very real thing, and the pressure of one tectonic plate sliding underneath another is happening right at the border of North America. This particular fault is called the Cascadia Subduction Zone, and right now it’s at a standstill waiting to slip. “We live on a plate boundary between the ocean plate called the Juan de Fuca plate, which is converging with North America,” Steele said. “We are coming together and because the two plates are locked together what’s happened is the crust is forming a ripple.”

The coastline of Washington and Oregon is rising steadily. We are being pushed east a little bit, and the toe of North America under the ocean is being pushed down. It’s been doing that for 315 years since the last earthquake in 1700. “We know that there’s enough strain accumulated to produce a great earthquake,” Steele said. “But the average recurrence is 500 years. So it could be a century or two before it happens.” If such an earthquake happened in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which is 700 miles from Vancouver Island, Canada and goes all the way to Cape Mendocino, California, the

more minutes compared to that of the average earthquake, which is 20 to 40 seconds long. “The first feeling that you’ll have are short pulse like motions, and that won’t last very long. But then the ground will start shaking,” said Sandi Doughton, Seattle Times reporter and author of the book “Full-Rip 9.0: The Next Big Earthquake in the Pacific Northwest.” “It’ll be low frequency (and) slow shaking. It won’t be hammer, hammer, hammer. It will be wave-like for four to five minutes. After the quake, a cascade effect of events will take place – some are more certain than others.

According to Steele, a University of Washington research group is looking further into the effect a massive quake will have on high-rise buildings. “In most cases you’ll see strong shaking in

pockets where there are poor buildings, where you have a lot of damage, and then you’ll have neighborhoods (where) you’ll be able to walk and see very little signs of damage,” Steele said.

region could experience anywhere between an 8.7 and 9.3 earthquake. The actual probability of a great earthquake occurring in Cascadia in the next 50 years is about 15 percent, according to Steele.

The longer the ground shakes, the more water comes out of the particles in the soil, causing liquefaction, which causes structural problems for buildings. Buildings on hills and river valleys where soils are loose and not hard-packed can create structural problems for buildings on these areas as well.

“A 15 percent chance in 50 years is a high enough probability for a great earthquake that we need to take it seriously,” Steele said This fault is off shore about 100 miles from the Puget Sound region and a 700-mile long fault ripping is going to take several

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

According to Doughton the thing that will do the biggest damage outside of the tsunami area (coastal towns) is that the shaking will be destructive on our buildings and infrastructure. Doughton said that almost half of our highrises were built before 1990, and it wasn’t until the early 1990s that building codes considered CSZ quakes in building codes.

28

“A lot of our infrastructures run through valleys. This will create electrical line and pipeline damage and flooding,” Doughton said. For bridges built to more modern standards, Steele said they will probably be just fine. But delays and inspections after the quake will cause closures. You will want to move away from the water or waterfront if you can because, even though the tsunami generated will take hours to get down to the Puget Sound or more, the amplitude is going to be limited to a meter or two and depending on where the high tide is – that could mean some localized flooding.

“Know the capabilities of schools and nursing homes,” Holdeman said. “Ask to see a copy of the plan. Ask when the last time they simulated an earthquake was. How long are they prepared to take care of your children?” “We expect a small tsunami in the Puget Sound,” Steele said. “The currents are going to be very tricky and very strong. The marinas are really going to be bad place to be. Landslides can generate tsunamis that can cause problems and flood waterfront areas.” Steele explains that most of time when you have a great earthquake, you won’t see a response from volcanoes, but occasionally it does happen “If a volcano is getting ready to erupt already, I think being pulsed by these long period waves that are compressing and dilated in the ground can crack things up a bit more,” Steele said. “This could cause debris flows and mountain landslides. Most likely that would be contained in the park.”

“Life as we know will cease to exist for months.” Eric Holdeman, director for the Center of Regional Disaster Resilience said. Pacific Northwesters should expect to be on their own for up to two weeks, and the best place is to be in your home. “Recognize that no one is coming to help you,” Holdeman said. “With this size of disaster all our resources are engaged – they are going to the nursing homes, schools and higher occupancy types of facilities.” Create a plan with your family and consider that cell phone towers may not be working. Use your neighbors and know their strengths and skills. “Know the capabilities of schools and nursing homes,” Holdeman said. “Ask to see a copy of the plan. Ask when the last time they simulated an earthquake was. How long are they prepared

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

29

to take care of your children?” Besides food and water, Holdeman said that enough medication for two weeks and a battery – powered radio are necessities. “It could happen tomorrow or 100 years from now, that’s the geologic time scale. That doesn’t mesh with the human time scale,” Doughton said. “We have all these other things competing for our time and attention and money. It’s an easy thing to push to the back of the list.” “We will pull through and have a really nice memorable experience out of it, if we do it right,” Steele said. For Doughton, preparedness also includes wine because two weeks or longer without wine is a very long time. www.ready.gov/earthquakes

Get Organized in 2016 CLEANING OUT THAT WARDROBE FOR A CLEAN SLATE

BY MICHELLE PHILLIPS

Have fun with this project and merchandise your closet as though it were a darling boutique.

CREATING A WARDROBE can be challenging. Most of our closets are packed full. But if you are like most people, you wear about 20 percent of your wardrobe 80 percent of the time. Paring down is the imperative to a streamlined, fabulous wardrobe.

• • • • •

dresses, long sweaters and jackets pants and skirts golf /athletic wear shirts and blouses sweaters (these may be hung or folded on open shelves)

Imagine if you donated 50 to 80 percent of your wardrobe that you don’t ever wear and then added a few key pieces? Wouldn’t it be easy to choose your outfit every morning from all of your favorite clothes? Can you imagine a closet full of only great pieces that look fabulous on you?

Start with one section at a time and evaluate each piece – try it on, when did you wear it last? Do you love it? Is it flattering, up to date and in great shape? If so, it’s a keeper. Place it in its section of closet. If not, determine whether it is sellable, needs to be donated or tailored and place in appropriate pile.

Why wait for spring when you can start 2016 with a fresh, organized closet? You are sure to feel more in control of your life – excess stuff creates stress.

Once you have finished one group, arrange that section so that the more formal items are towards the back of section and the items worn most often are more accessible. I suggest keeping like items together and arranged by color. Have fun with this project and merchandise your closet as though it were a darling boutique.

I have created a quick, easy way for you to start your new year with stress-free style. If you are able to, it is best to limit the color choices so that most items can be mixed and matched. For example, my base wardrobe is black and my accent colors are shades of green and grey. Starting with a clean slate is the easiest way. Start by removing everything from your closet. Dust and vacuum all of the shelves and make sure you have adequate lighting. Choose which sections will house which types of items. I find it easiest to create one section for:

Getting Back to Basics... AND OTHER SIMPLISTIC TRUTHS

BY SUSAN MOORE, OWNER OF BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR, WA

IF YOU CAN SEE IT, you can be it. Abs are made in the kitchen. Getting back to basics. We’ve all heard these sayings and thought them to be nonsense. No one wants to go back to the beginning of a path to get further down the road. But what if these are necessary mindsets to ensure success? As of this point in our society’s wellness research we know one thing for sure, and that is that no one seems to agree on anything when it comes to how to be healthy. Most every concept has been proven and disproven through every conceivable study. But what if we just do what we’ve always known to be true? Losing weight is easy. That’s right, I said it. It’s

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

not complicated, and all it takes is consistency. It goes back to abs are made in the kitchen. Are you currently at a weight that you are happy with? If you can say yes to that question, feel free to skip to the next paragraph. Still reading, aren’t you? Abs really are made or destroyed in the kitchen. I have a number of rules about eating. I like rules because they are boundaries, and in my experience all humans function better when they have boundaries to work within. Even if they periodically go outside said boundaries, they did it because they wanted to and not because they didn’t know any better. Saying I “don’t” do things is empowering; saying I “can’t” do something is demoralizing.

Boundaries. Don’t eat anything that can’t nourish your body in some way. Before you eat something, look at it and make sure you are eating it mindfully, no matter what it is. If it’s a candy bar, then you aren’t actively trying to lose weight. If it’s fast food, your goal isn’t to be healthy. You can give all the reasons, also known as excuses, you want but every bite, lick and taste you put in your mouth has a purpose. It’s either fuel or fuel for later (fat). Make your choice.

trying to be a better person in general. Most common, time tested sayings or cliches came from somewhere. Most everything we need to have a better life has already been found, invented or discovered. Sometimes, all we need is simplicity.

What kind of fuel is just as important. We tend to take better care of our cars than our bodies. If you were to buy a new expensive German vehicle, would you put regular unleaded gasoline in your tank? You can always buy a new car, but we only get one body. We need to treat it at least as well as we do our vehicles. If you treat your car like a garbage can, it’s because it’s not important to you. If you knew that it was your forever car would you change how you treat it? Think about that for a minute. Look at yourself in the mirror for a second. This is your forever body. Getting stronger takes practice. It also takes visualization. “If you can see it, you can be it”. Our bodies don’t speak English. When I am coaching people, I have to find words to cue people to get them to move the way I want them to. If more than one person in my session isn’t getting the movement I am coaching, it isn’t their fault it’s mine. All I have to do to get someone to move better is say something in a way that causes a visual response. So if there is something you really want to do, visualize it. Take your time and don’t just visual the outcome but also what it realistically took to get there. Now make a plan based on the visualization drill. It works. Every time. The last last truth I gave was an example of was “getting back to basics”. It could be my favorite. We’ve all heard it, but how often have you actually thought about it and done it. You should and can get back to basics in every part of your life. Want to lose weight? Get back to the basics of food. Good basic forms of proteins, carbs and fats. Want to move better? Start on the ground learning to roll around and crawl before load-bearing movements. The basics you learned as a toddler. It’s the same with health and fitness as it is with finance, studying, or even just

Bloom Early Education

The Young Bully WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW

A Whole New Concept in Early Childhood Education

BY MIRIAM DRESSLER, DIRECTOR OF LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT, BLOOM EARLY EDUCATION

AS THE PARENT of a young child, you may believe you don’t have to worry about bullying at this stage of development; however, that may not be the case. Bullying may begin well before your child enters kindergarten, as early as three years old when children develop the cognitive ability to understand feelings of others. They are observant of the world, absorbing information and behaviors from television, movies, computer games and books. They are also beginning cooperative play with their peers and are experiencing play-related conflict and aggression, a typical stage of development. This conflict teaches about compromise, negotiation, fairness, forgiveness and the power of making amends. Normal conflict and aggression is usually identified when both parties are upset or have an agenda. When this is not the case, bullying may be occurring. A bully is someone who is intentionally aggressive and uses an imbalance of power to intimidate, humiliate and hurt another person for the purpose of gaining social or psychological control and superiority. Bullying behaviors include hitting, shoving, biting, name calling, threatening, socially excluding, teasing and destroying another’s belongings. It can be hard to distinguish between developmentally-appropriate behavior and bullying in young children. Remember • Not all aggression is bullying. • Aggression in young children is part of normal development, starting and birth and peaking at around 24 months, but continues throughout life. • Normal conflict/aggression is usually identified. • Children under the age of three do not have the cognitive ability to understand empathy, so aggression cannot be considered as an intentional act to undermine or hurt another. Aggression

is more of a communication tool. • Bullying behavior is repeated and planned by the aggressor. The bully has intention to hurt the other child or gain control or power. What are signs that your child may be being bullied: • Unexplained injuries • Unexplained headache or stomachache • Unusually clingy or other changes in behavior, like becoming withdrawn • Expressed fear about going to preschool If you believe your child is being bullied: • Talk to your child and get a good understanding of the situation • Remain calm • Reassure your child you will help • Help your child figure out how to deal with the bully (i.e. ignoring, stand brave, avoid being alone with the bully, tell the teacher) • Take Action! Meet with the teacher and express your concerns If your child is bullying other children, don’t deny the problem – ask your child to help you understand what is happening, it may not be his fault entirely. Then look for a potential source of frustration: hearing or speech issues; changes in your child’s life/ routine, and encourage your child to be empathetic – ask how he would feel if he were in the other child’s position. Work with your child to develop meaningful repercussions or consequences.

New Year, New You

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR again and many of us are looking back at Thanksgiving feasts and holiday over-indulgences and vowing to ourselves to get “back on track” come the first of the year. The majority of New Year’s resolutions include weight-loss goals, but why do 92 percent of us fail? The answer: It’s not that easy.

NOT ANOTHER WEIGHT LOSS PLAN

BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD, REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST

Familiar with the term “stubborn weight?” Me too. The majority of people who seek out dietetic services are those who have already tried calories in, calories out, but the real problem is not their calorie intake; it’s hormone imbalances, micronutrient deficiencies, poor gut flora, overactive immune responses and generalized inflammation that is enabling their body to not fully utilize the nutrients from the foods they are eating – even when they are eating healthy foods! Why is this? The Standard American Diet (SAD) is dominated by food laden with sugars, pesticides, GMOs, antibiotics and hormones. With all the additives, preservatives, colors and sweeteners we eat in a

The solution? An Elimination Diet. An Elimination Diet focuses on eliminating what harms and replenishing what heals. Eliminating foods such as corn, soy, gluten, dairy, nightshades, caffeine, alcohol and a few others while including bone broths, cultured vegetables and heavy doses of anti-inflammatory herbs and spices to restore

Once you have eliminated these foods for a period of time, you strategically reintroduce them – noting any undesirable symptoms and excluding those foods – resulting in a customized diet that fits your specific health needs. Where to Start The biggest challenge encountered when eliminating several food groups at once is the lack of education, knowledge and a plan to ensure adequate nutrient intake. TRAVEL & LEISURE

AN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Combining travel with education provides in-depth experience By Patty Hutchens. Photos by Joanne Heaviland Photography. TRAVEL. It is something that most of us love to do or, at the very least, dream about. Whether it is to lands far away that we have only read about in history books or a place right in our county, travel is filled with adventure and new discoveries. And when you combine that adventure with an opportunity to learn new things, the experience is that much more exciting. From Tourist to Tour Guide Such is the case with Joanne Heaviland,

a professional photographer who lives in Southern California. Heaviland has taken her passion for travel and photography and shared it with others in her photography workshops all over the world. It is a chance to explore, learn and create in some of the most beautiful places on Earth. As an employee for United Airlines when she was just 21, Heaviland had the opportunity to travel all over the world to places such as China, Thailand, Greece, Mexico, Canada, Peru and many places throughout Europe. That

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

experience, combined with her own heritage, gave her a taste of places she would like to explore further. Growing up with an Italian grandmother, Heaviland developed a passion for Italy and Italian food early in life. Her work as a professional photographer and passion for travel are what inspired her to conduct travel photography workshops. “I named my first one in 2013 to Tuscany, Italy ‘Wine, Food & Photography,’” said Heaviland.

“My 2011 trip is what inspired me to do a tour to Peru and also Machu Picchu in June of 2015 that was titled ‘Experience Peru: A Culinary, Cultural and Photography Journey through the land of the Incas.’” The 2011 trip to which Heaviland refers was with a nonprofit group, International Children’s Network, that assists at-risk and orphaned children in countries all around the world. Heaviland traveled to Peru in 2011 as part of the group that was there to choose children for the World Orphan Choir. As she traveled to orphanages in the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 17,000 feet, Heaviland saw young children who had been abandoned, neglected and abused. The children were living in an orphanage so they could attend school – an option that would not be available to them if they lived with their parents. Heaviland shares how, as the children auditioned for the choir, they were singing for their lives. It was their ticket out of poverty to be able to travel throughout the U.S. performing at schools, churches and community events

to bring awareness to the plight of poverty in other parts of the world. Heaviland knew she wanted to be involved. She used her talent as a photographer and as she traveled to the orphanages in Peru, she took photographs of all the orphaned children – one avenue by which potential sponsors could connect with the children. Heaviland sponsors three of those children. But her trip not only changed the lives of the children, it changed hers as well. She fell in love with the country of Peru and vowed to return. She did just that this past year with her Peru tour. “My tours are unique in the sense that I always include wine – or in the case of Peru, their traditional drink of Pisco Sours – food and photography. We also have a cooking class of the traditional food from each particular country, and then I hold photography classes for any of the participants that are interested in photography,” said Heaviland. “I would say that usually half the people on my tours are interested in learning how to improve their photos. The tours also include cultural and

historical tours as well.” Heaviland shares that given the world as it is today, it is often preferable for many to travel as part of a tour. “I think especially women who are traveling alone prefer to travel in a group. They feel safer, but they also enjoy other women who like to travel as well,” said Heaviland. One of those who went on the tour is Chrys Wallen who traveled with her daughter-in-law to Peru this past June. “We had a tour through the local market place in Lima led by our chef at the Sky Kitchen Cooking School,” said Wallen. “It was very fun and informative.” As a novice photographer, Wallen said she appreciated Heaviland’s patience with teaching photography on the trip. “She taught me a lot,” said Wallen who adds that the accommodations were wonderful and the local guides were very informative. “I am ready to go on another tour with Joanne, whenever and wherever she plans to go, I’m ready.” In addition to returning to Peru and Italy

She used her talent as a photographer and as she traveled to the orphanages in Peru, she took photographs of all the orphaned children – one avenue by which potential sponsors could connect with the children.

for tours in 2016, Heaviland is currently planning a tour to Ireland for this year, a new place for her. She will announce exact dates in February on her website, www.joanneheavilandphotography.com. Beyond Studying Abroad While many equate such travel with the life of the retired or the wealthy, there are college students who are also choosing to not only study abroad but to also immerse themselves into the culture by taking part in classes that give them a broader understanding of the country in which they choose to temporarily call home. Nichole Pagano is a senior at the University of Idaho where she is majoring in marketing in the College of Business and Economics. She has spent this fall exploring the country of Italy. It’s been exhausting and exhilarating and, given the chance, she would do it all over again. In addition to Italian 1 and Italian 2, her courses include Italian Cuisine and Intercultural Communications. “These classes in particular have definitely enhanced my experience in Italy,” said Pagano. She shares how her Intercultural Communications class has brought to light many of the cultural barriers between the cultures. “From language

to religion to norms and beliefs,” the differences are many. Pagano said that her full Italian experience was definitely enhanced by enrolling in the Italian language classes, as difficult as they have been. “I feel more competent and confident living in Torino being able to carry a basic conversation with locals,” said Pagano. And Pagano was determined to leave Italy in December with an ability to communicate effectively in Italian. “I feel like I know a lot of Italian, but at the same time I know there is so much more out there,” said Pagano. “But every time an Italian can tell I’m American and speaks to me in English and I reply in Italian, I feel extra victorious!” The Italian Cuisine class has taught her far more than learning how to cook authentic Italian dishes; it has given her a glimpse into where the Italian culture’s passion lies. “Implementing

EdmondsLivingLocal.com

45

the Italian Cuisine class to my studies has given me an appreciation of what it truly means to be Italian. When you visit an area and eat the food, you don’t fully understand the time and effort and generations of recipes that it takes to bring that food to your table,” said Pagano. “Learning different techniques and recipes and prep courses to make a full Italian meal has not only helped me understand the culture, but has made me fall in love with Italy even more.” As she comes to the end of her four-month adventure, Pagano said she would do it again in a heartbeat. Not only was it a chance to learn about another culture, but the experience has changed her in ways difficult to describe. “If you told me I could start again tomorrow, I would without a second thought. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I can tell how much I’ve grown and changed, and I’m excited to get back home and implement what I’ve learned into my daily life in America.”
