“As a first-home buyer, I was so intimidated by the process, as you probably are if you are reading this. I’m here to tell you not to worry. Get in touch with Northwest Mortgage Services. Our loan officer, Abel Hernandez, was fantastic. He made sure my wife and I were informed every step of the way, and was very responsive to my calls and questions. I was seeking a VA Loan, so I had a few extra concerns on requirements and things to consider, but Abel and his team are extremely experienced in this aspect as well. The bottom line is they care about what they do, and who they are doing it for. The only thing I would have done differently is calling them sooner.” - James Santos

oggy weather and the onset of holidays did not deter thousands of home buyers and sellers at the end of 2021. Reports from the NWMLS show numbers for new listings, pending sales, and closed sales were comparable to year-ago totals, while prices rose a little more than 15 percent. “It is normal for there to be a seasonal slowdown, which normally allows serious buyers to gain an advantage over casual buyers who take a break during the holidays. This year, neither class of buyers have taken the sideline,” commented Frank Hawkins, president of Hawkins-Poe, Inc. “The difference this year is that there are fears of increasing interest rates, which is keeping the demands high and the pressure on all types of buyers,” reported Hawkins. Northwest MLS figures show 8,571 pending sales across 26 counties in November, nearly matching the year-ago total of 8,584 mutually accepted offers. The 8,976 closed sales marked a slight

Areawide there were 4,621 active listings of single-family homes and condominiums at month end, down nearly 29 percent from a year ago when there were 6,505 listings. The selection at month end amounted to about two weeks of supply (0.51 months). Five counties had even less supply: Snohomish, Thurston, King, Clark and Pierce. The return to these suburban areas seems to continue unabated as first-time buyers seek value. Center for Real Estate Research at the University of Washington, believes “the normal seasonal $826,703 $826,703 effects have taken hold,” but pointed to Skagit and Whatcom counties, and other areas along the I-5 corridor, as areas where the “main price action” is still occurring. “The return to these suburban areas seems to continue unabated as first-time buyers seek value, and those seeking a more relaxed lifestyle are taking advantage of low interest rates,” said Young. He singled out Skagit and Whatcom counties for their large price increases, at 21.2 percent and 26.5 percent, respectively. $826,703 Area-wide, the November numbers were “pretty much as expected, with the market starting to $4,850,000 slow as we move into winter,” stated Hawkins.$826,703 He also commented on recent adjustments in Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) limits for conforming loans (mortgages backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac). Loan limits for King, Pierce and Snohomish counties took an 18 percent jump, increasing from $776,250 to $891,250.

HOW TO AVOID
CO M PA R I S O N THREE KEYS TO HAPPINESS IN LIFE BY JENNIFER “TAZ” VAZQUEZ
R
ecently, I enjoyed lunch and caught up with a dear friend. She shared how proud she was of me, and wished she were as accomplished as I was. I paused and stared at her in confusion. I wished she could see herself as I see her!
Jennifer Vazquez
This remarkable woman had the courage to move to the U.S., only knowing her new spouse. She learned a second language. She experienced years of discrimination, without it impacting her compassion. She is intelligent, nurturing, and a wonderful gardener. She has been a successful wife and mom. While she experienced the death of her spouse, she still enjoys life and adores being a grandmother! She is involved in her grandkids’ lives on a daily basis, creating lasting memories for her grandkids and their kids!

How about for you? Do you ever find yourself comparing yourself to others, or not giving yourself enough credit? I know I used to! \
Life Coaching
Let’s create how you want to show up in this world!
Unfortunately, comparison distorts the way we see ourselves and actually is a form of self-sabotage. We hyper-focus on what we don’t have, and we can miss seeing how much we have experienced, accomplished and/or overcome. Comparison can keep us stuck in fear and unhealthy habits, prevent us from accepting ourselves, or enjoying life. Instead of comparing yourself to someone else, or focusing on what you don’t like in your life, try these three tips to help you shift your mindset from one of scarcity to abundance: 1. Reframe and show gratitude. Rather than comparing, ask yourself what you can learn from someone and how you can apply it in your life. Additionally, start a daily gratitude practice. Ask yourself what you are grateful for (in your life and about yourself). These help us focus on what we do have, begin to see the possibilities, and celebrate what we like/love.

2. Ask curious questions. What do you like in your life? What would you like to do in your life? Imagine yourself three years from now and all you have accomplished. What did you do? What is preventing you from doing it (time, resources, fear, etc.)? What is the worst that could happen if you didn’t accomplish your dreams? What are the benefits of making your dreams happen? These questions get you to think about what is possible and notice where there may be resistance.
3. Take action. What is one small step you can do, today, toward the life you want to create, or the goal you want to accomplish? Author Mel Robbins describes an excellent tool that has helped thousands of people get over the fear and complacency that can keep us stuck in unhelpful/unhealthy habits. Just count down “5-4-3-2-1” then move. She calls it “The 5 Second Rule” because it takes that long for our brain to start making excuses, and just as quickly we can move and take action. Taking small steps add up over time. If you want to shift your mindset from negative comparison to positive possibilities, empowerment and abundance, then try these three tips. As Mel Robins notes, “Focus on everything that's going right. When you can celebrate all of the little wins that are happening each and every day, each and every week, you'll realize you are not far away from what you want. You are very much on your way to making what you want a reality.” Let’s go create our happiness, y’all: 5-4-3-2-1GO!

Planning for a Big Change in the New Year? G E T T I N G O R G A N I Z E D TO S E PA R AT E O R D I V O R C E
T
By Felicia Soleil, Family Mediator/Attorney
he new year is often a time when spouses decide to start a new chapter in their lives and end their marital partnership. If this is you, it is helpful to gather as much information as possible before you begin. Organizing your own financial information prior to speaking with a divorce professional, be it a mediator or lawyer or financial advisor, can help you feel more in control while saving you the money and time it might cost for that professional to do it for you. So where to begin? Here is a list, although not comprehensive, of the basic information you’ll want to compile to begin to verify your assets, debts, income and expenses.
List of Assets - Marital: Compile a list of all the assets you have accumulated during your marriage as well as identify any obligations that are secured by those assets, such as the mortgage on your home or car loan. Examples of assets may include residences and other real estate, retirement accounts and pensions, bank accounts, investments, cars, boats, RVs, etc. You’ll also want to include any business interests that you or your spouse are involved with, including a list of specific assets of the business, such as inventory, equipment and vehicles, and business bank accounts. List of Assets - Separate: If you have assets that you had prior to marriage and are still maintained, or if you have assets that you received as a gift or by inheritance, you’ll also need to include those in your inventory. This does not mean that separate assets will necessarily be shared with your spouse, but they must be disclosed because they may influence how the marital assets are ultimately divided. List of Debts: In addition to debts that are secured by assets, you’ll want to provide an outline of all outstanding credit card debt, student loans, tax obligations, lines of credit and personal loans. Although most debts accumulated during the marriage are presumed to be marital, regardless of whose name they are in, responsibility for those debts is sorted out during the divorce process. Verification of Income: Whether or not you have children, you’ll need to gather tax returns and supporting documents such as W-2s, 1099s and K-1s for at least the last two years. (If you are behind on

your tax return filings, now is the time to get that caught up!) You’ll also want to compile your paystubs or earnings reports for at least the last six months, if not longer, depending on how your income ebbs and flows during the course of a year. List of Expenses: A simple outline of your current budget for monthly living expenses, as well as periodic expenses, will also be needed. During this transition from one combined household to two separate homes, this budget will usually be a work in progress. Documentation: The amount of documentation you’ll need to prove what you have and what you owe will ultimately be left up to the process you use to navigate through your separation and divorce and the professionals you work with. Know where to find it now rather than waiting for deadlines to produce it when you may have to scramble. If not using a professional, you and your spouse may decide to exchange the information informally. However, if going through mediation or collaborative law, you’ll most likely need to circulate at least a few months of statements to everyone involved. And if you are in a highly contentious case using attorneys in litigation, be prepared to have to produce at least one year’s worth of financial documents, if not more. Sometimes, the sheer exercise of making a simple outline of assets and debts, and putting together an initial set of supporting documents, can help you feel more in control of the situation when so many other things are feeling out of control. The added benefit of having something straightforward and organized to provide to your divorce professional at the outset will also go a long way toward helping that professional assist you with creating a plan and providing you some assurances as you move forward. Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via videoconference or phone.
Building Better Solutions for Clients With almost 30 years experience serving families in Gig Harbor and Pierce County, Felicia Soleil provides more constructive alternatives to dissolving a marriage outside of a courtroom. In addition to her family law practice, she also provides mediation services, offering legal support, education and case management - from simple to complex - for separation and divorce, parenting plans, child support and prenuptial agreements.
Facing a divorce or separation? Felicia focuses on reducing and resolving conflict, helping you transition by moving on, not just moving out.

STAYING SANE IN A
CRAZY MARKET
Three strategies to follow
Courtesy of Nancy Harris, CMFC, CDFA | President, Financial Planner, New Foundation Wealth Group
W
hen the market goes on one of its periodic roller-coaster rides, it's useful to have strategies that prepare you both financially and psychologically to handle market volatility. Here are three ways to help keep yourself from making hasty decisions that could have a long-term impact on your ability to achieve your financial goals. 1. Have a game plan.
BUILDING SOLID FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS We develop & review strategies, plans & solutions, as well as work to create a safe & caring environment where everyone can discuss their financial concerns, dreams & goals.
Having predetermined guidelines that recognize the potential for turbulent times can help prevent emotion from dictating your decisions. For example, you can use diversification to try to offset the risks of certain holdings with those of others. Diversification may not ensure a profit or guarantee against a loss, but it can help you understand and balance your risk in advance. And if you're an active investor, a trading discipline can help you stick to a long-term strategy. For example, you might determine in advance that you will take profits when a security or index rises by a certain percentage, and buy when it has fallen by a set percentage. 2. Tell yourself that this too shall pass. The financial markets are historically cyclical. Even if you wish you had sold at what turned out to be a market peak, or regret having sat out a buying opportunity, you may well get another chance at some point. Even if you're considering changes, a volatile market can be an inopportune time to turn your portfolio inside out. A well-thought-out asset allocation is still the basis of good investment planning. 3. Look in the rear-view mirror.

If you're investing long term, sometimes it helps to take a look back and see how far you've come. If your portfolio is down this year, it can be easy to forget any progress you may already have made over the years. Though past performance is no guarantee of future returns, of course, the stock market's long-term direction has historically been up. With stocks, it's important to remember that having an investing strategy is only half the battle; the other half is being able to stick to it. Even if you're able to avoid losses by being out of the market, will you know when to get back in? If patience has helped you build a nest egg, it just might be useful now too.
"Investors should remember that excitement and expenses are their enemies. And if they insist on trying to time their participation in equities, they should try to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful." - Warren Buffett "Most of the time common stocks are subject to irrational and excessive price fluctuations in both directions as the consequence of the ingrained tendency of most people to speculate or gamble ... to give way to hope, fear and greed." - Benjamin Graham Remember that while they're sound strategies, diversification, asset allocation and dollar cost averaging can't guarantee a profit or eliminate the possibility of loss. All investing involves risk, including the potential loss of principal, and there can be no guarantee that any investing strategy will be successful. THE MUSTARD SEED PROJECT PERSON-CENTERED CARE BREAKS GROUND IN KEY PENINSULA By Rachel Kelly
RESIDENTS HAVE THE OPTION OF STAYING IN THE KEY PENINSULA.
A
fter seven years of planning, fundraising, design and study, The Mustard Seed Project is breaking ground for its first assisted living and memory care homes in the Key Peninsula. The Key Peninsula is a beautiful place to grow old, and many residents have lived their whole lives there. Some transplants move to the “almost island” to retire. Still others choose the Key Peninsula because of its beauty and affordability. As residents age, it’s no mystery why they choose to stay in the area. As is often the case, aging brings with it a myriad of hurdles; one of the larger hurdles being relocation. Sometimes relocation is simply a move to a smaller, more manageable home. But if memory care or assisted living is required, residents in the Key Peninsula have no choice but to leave the area. Now with the development of The Mustard Seed Project’s assisted living and memory care homes, residents have the option of staying in the Key Peninsula. This is a resounding relief, not just for residents but for the doctors and specialists who are entrusted with the care of our aging relatives. The Mustard Seed Project is an organization

that began with a focus on elder transportation, referral, wellness, housing options and community education. The increasing community volunteer network in the project helps to keep the aging in our community closely connected to invaluable relationships; relationships that solidify the positive mental health and wellness of our aging residents. “Since 2006, the Mustard Seed Project’s staff, volunteers and partner organizations have provided a wide array of programs and services to seniors on the Key Peninsula. These services help people age in place in their homes and remain in this community,” says Marion Sharp, development director of the Mustard Seed Project. “The assisted living homes are an extension of that aim, allowing people to stay in this place that they love—even when they can no longer live on their own. This will make a huge difference for our elders, their friends, neighbors and families.” Rural communities such as the Key Peninsula have a tendency to be older, versus urban areas. And yet, often rural areas have the least access to assisted living or residential care. Usually, rural areas have no assisted living settings at all. The Mustard Seed

THE HOMES THEMSELVES WILL FOLLOW A MODEL DEVELOPED BY THE GREENHOUSE PROJECT, WHICH IS A UNIQUE PERSON-CENTERED WAY TO PROVIDE SUPPORTIVE CARE TO OLDER PEOPLE.
Project is changing that with homes that will be a reflection of their mission to ensure choices for healthy aging. Homes that are a fulfillment of their vision for an elder-friendly Key Peninsula. The homes themselves will follow a model developed by The Greenhouse Project, which is a unique person-centered way to provide supportive care to older people. The Greenhouse Project focuses its efforts toward Best Life practices. This means that elder care is focused on what is positive, rather than negative. The Greenhouse Project model provides care according to what their residents can do, rather than what they can’t. Their Best Life approach helps all members of any given association that assists elderly to understand the complexities of dementia and to help caregivers see each person as an individual. This means that older people in the care of the Greenhouse Project umbrella have access to living and participating in what brings them joy, each according to their individual gifts. Practically, it goes like this: The Greenhouse Project is a nonprofit that provides pre-assessment, a customizable approach, onsite training, and sustainable oversight through ongoing training and support. The Best Life approach used by the Greenhouse Project ensures a campus that follows four basic principles: the power of normal, focus on retained abilities, dignity of risk, and advocacy. The power of normal is the principle that limits isolation, retaining as much normalcy as possible in a non-restrictive environment. The focus on retained abilities ensures that people living with dementia continue to learn and have new experiences and practice in what they are still capable of doing. The dignity of risk is a focus on rich relationships that don’t rely on restrictions, be they chemical or physical. The last principle, advocacy, broadens the role of team members providing care, advancing the belief that no one should be defined by their diagnosis. 34

Elder care facilities that follow Best Life practices advocated by the Greenhouse Project, such as the memory care and assisted living homes being built by the Mustard Seed Project, have a radically different organization structure. Green House homes are small in scale, selfcontained and self-sufficient—with people at the center. Each home includes private rooms and bathrooms, a living room with a fireplace, and outdoor spaces that are easy to access and navigate. Thanks to a $7.8 million USDA Rural Development Community Facilities Loan, $5.7 million in support from Pierce County, and the generous support of individuals and foundations, the Key Peninsula will have its own unique Green House homes. The Mustard Seed project will oversee the development of the facility, as well the well-being and health of its members. Thanks to the Mustard Seed Project, the Key Peninsula is finally getting the care it deserves.

Where Life Continues to Get Better Kensington Gardens Resort Living Community
By Jillian Chandler
G
ig Harbor has been home to the beautiful Kensington Gardens since 2005—designed and built by native Washingtonians and local residents Mark and Kelly Watson. They have been providing personalized care for a decade and are now adding more living options on their 27-acre estate. The Watsons have succeeded in creating an innovative living concept with a luxury resort-vibe. “We believe that life should continue to get better, and as needs change over time, our residents have the confidence of knowing they have access to our award-winning, full personalized care,” says Kelly. KG was originally started as an event venue, but the couple found themselves caring for Mark’s grandmother, and then Kelly’s father, who suffered a stroke. They began touring facilities for their aging family members—yet they could not find the quality of life they were seeking. So, in 2012, the Watsons established Regent Park at Kensington Gardens to provide living the way they believe it should be—with grace, laughter and love. Personalized Care means they tailor a plan toward specific needs and goals as you age. “Our residents have fun and feel loved in a home environment—so they thrive!” affirms Kelly. There is exciting news on the horizon, as Kensington Gardens is adding Villas and Cottages with their signature resort living lifestyle, to be completed 2022-2023. With 10,000 Baby Boomers turning 65 every day, there is an extreme shortage of living options that are of fine quality and where residents can age in place. Using state residential care licensing and codes, Kelly and Mark developed their own concept—“Personalized Care Resort Community (PCRC)”—a resort lifestyle that provides care and evolves with residents. They have designed an active environment in natural surroundings, which includes a plan for care. Kelly and Mark are creating a boutique community with walking trails, tennis and pickleball courts, meals, activities, transportation and care—just minutes from the Uptown Shopping Center, Met Market, the picturesque downtown Gig Harbor and lively Tacoma. The buildings and grounds are meticulously maintained, gourmet meals are designed, concierge services are offered, and they’re passionate in making every day the best that it can be for their residents! “Our suites will have 10- and 12-foot ceiling heights, great room common areas, large private balconies, heated bathroom floors, and are beautifully appointed with quartz countertops, fireplaces and walk-in closets,” shares Kelly.

Kensington Gardens uses a membership and monthly maintenance fee model. “This membership concept is a plan that allows you to budget and provides a legacy for your estate,” Kelly states. “Our membership plan provides incentive to move in earlier to lock-in the maintenance fee structure, allows partners to age together and promotes aging in place.” While assisting a client looking for an independent living community, Lydia Geline, Realtor for Windermere Real Estate, toured Kensington Gardens and had the opportunity to meet Kelly and her father, who
was also living there. “The property was stunning, and Kelly’s compassion for all the residents sold me on Kensington Gardens,” states Lydia. Lydia’s Real Estate career began as a Corporate Relocation Agent on the Executive Team, moving families from all over the world to work for our state’s largest corporations. “As a Realtor for the past 24 years, I have been along the journey with my clients through many shifts and changes in their lives. I now have the pleasure of assisting them with yet another life chapter as a Windermere Sales Consultant with Kensington Gardens. My clients of several years are now looking for their next step to include lower maintenance, healthy environment and options that include fun, lovely meals and the ability to stay!” Lydia is passionate about sharing all that Kensington Gardens has to offer and making the process of securing a forever home as seamless as possible. To make the process simple, clients will work with Lydia and may continue to have their Realtor represent them in selecting their new home at Kensington Gardens. If you or someone you love is interested in securing a home at Kensington Gardens, please reach out to Lydia at 206.419.0775.

WINTER SPORTS IN THE SOUTH SOUND WINTER IS THE TIME TO DIVE BY RACHEL KELLY
W
inter, not summer, is the time to do some diving here in the South Sound. Don’t believe me? Ask Harbor WildWatch in Gig Harbor: “I can tell you that diving in the winter is only slightly colder (45 degrees versus 55 degrees), but the clarity is generally much better,” says Rachel Easton, executive director for Harbor WildWatch. The South Sound is rarely affected by surface waves and storms, making it an ideal place for diving. The only issue that generally affects divers here is the visibility. As the snow melts from the mountains in the spring, the Sound experiences heavy rainfall and tidal exchanges. The currents can also get pretty intense out there during the spring. While the summer is warm, and generally the time that we all think of diving, there are many factors that mess with visibility, including the long sunny days. “The abundant sunshine and long day length of summer fuels
38

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
a massive bloom of plankton that turns the water into pea soup,” says Easton. In addition, the late fall and early winter is the time that salmon make their ocean run. Along with that migration comes an abundance of wildlife that feed off the schools of fish, including dolphins, seals and whales. Here in the South Puget Sound, there are a variety of diving opportunities, including steep sheer walls, reefs, and underwater “parks.” Divers can expect to see lingcod, perch, ratfish, and various types of sculpin and gunnels. For the lucky diver, looking in the right place (and with that clear winter visibility), there are the Pacific Giant Octopus, wolf eel and whales. As for gear, it is possible to dive with a full wetsuit versus a dry suit. Ten degrees isn’t a lot, but water is water, and it always feels cold at first. Most divers around the South Sound take on the extra tack of a dry suit, and while they might not be snorkeling in such an outfit, they do experience
longer dive times in the water. For new divers, safety requires special diver certification and a buddy system. Non-divers and families, or just someone who doesn’t feel like braving the winter waters, can take advantage of the clear visibility of winter waters as well. October through March, on the first Saturday of the month, Harbor WildWatch hosts Pier Into the Night. Held at Jerisich Public Dock in downtown Gig Harbor from 7 to 8:30pm, staff biologists set up a 10-foot viewing screen that live streams what divers are seeing in real-time below the docks. In the past they’ve discovered feather-duster tube worms, sculpin, gunnels, Red-Irish Lorde, stubby squid and the infamous Pacific Giant Octopus. For more information about Pier Into the Night, be sure to visit HarborWildWatch.org. For really adventurous spirits, underwater diving opportunities are
abundant here all over Washington. If there’s one thing we have in Washington it’s water, and both salt and fresh provide ample diving opportunities. Dive sites can be found using a simple internet search. There are over 50 dive sites here in the South Sound (which underwater includes Olympia all the way up to Lake Washington). By land, however, that large of an area can be a long drive, especially when traffic is taken into account. So, for our purposes, here are some notable places found within a 30-minute radius of home. Included are small and large shipwrecks, beaches with boat access, broken ferry docks, and walls for beginner to advanced divers. For beginning divers, there is a large wreck on the western side of Vashon Island, in the Colvos Passage just north of Sandford Point. Due to general neglect, the wreck sank and can still be seen peeking above the surface during low tide. This is a generally busy stretch of water, so dive flags GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

are necessary. The area below the disintegrating hull houses a variety of creatures and are worth a good look. Also in that same area is the Maury Island Marine Park, which can be good for beginners. There are two wrecks in that area, some which are good for intermediate or advanced divers, so be sure that where you’re going is within your skill level. Also, for beginners, there is the area outside of Cutts Island State Park. Near Kopachuck State Park, just South of Cutts Island, is a dive park with a boulder pile and shelves. The snorkeling is also good because of the eelgrass beds. Point Fosdick also has diving that is easily accessible by shore, with general debris and boulder shelves for exploration. Intermediate divers might be interested in looking into two wrecks, one around Vashon Island and one around Gig Harbor. Neither wreck is available by shore and requires a boat for access. The Quartermaster wreck, north of Quartermaster Harbor near Vashon Island, abandoned more than 40 years ago, lies peacefully under the water. Light currents and clear visibility makes rockfish, sea anemones and sea stars visible as they huddle around the remains. Just west of the popular Tides Tavern dock in Gig Harbor lies the other wreck, a steamship by the name of the S.S. Burton. The steamer ferry caught fire in 1924 and was towed out to the middle of the harbor to protect the other boats closer to shore. There she sank and serves as a beautiful survey of maritime history. Also for the beginner to intermediate diver is the Point Richmond Minesweeper, which is a large wreck located outside of Point Richmond in Gig Harbor. The South Sound also has an abundance of difficult dives, with fast currents and deep waters. The rewards for difficult dives are great, however, as the South Sound houses many large, and notoriously shy, sea creatures. One such dive is the Tacoma Narrows Pylons. The Tacoma Narrows is a technical dive, as currents and zero beach access make this a difficult area to navigate. The pylons themselves serve as a wonderful 40

survey of marine life, but it is the old debris of “Galloping Gertie” that houses the truly fascinating Pacific Giant Octopus. Be sure to bring your underwater camera for this dive; as you float by with the currents you might experience a rare visit of one of these shy “monsters of the deep.” For experienced divers not interested in braving the more extreme currents of the Tacoma Narrows, octopus and wolf eels can also be spotted at Z’s Reef off Fox Island. This dive is considered fantastic and allows for more grazing of various critters versus the high-current dive at the Tacoma Narrows. For other sightings of wildlife not often seen in other parts of the Sound, visit the artificial reef created by fisheries near Johnson Point near Olympia called Itsami Ledge. Whether beginner or advanced, diving in the South Sound is worthy of investment, as it's an activity that can be enjoyed year-round. Happy new year and happy diving!

4.0 GPA student, Gig Harbor High School sophomore Benji Park can recall a time that he could have let his academics begin to slip. He credits a middle school teacher for putting him back on track for success at the high school level. “My seventhgrade language arts and social studies teacher at Goodman Middle School, Mr. Green, impacted my life because I was getting lazy during a trimester in his class and he noticed and was able to restore my hardworking side,” he recalled. Benji has a goal of maintaining a high GPA throughout the rest of high school so he can be well prepared for college studies. He’s taking some Advanced Placement classes, which are proving to be some of his favorites. “Right now, I really enjoy my AP seminar class, because I love researching and learning about a variety of topics, and because it involves a lot of interaction with others.”
While not always easy, these courses are at or near college level and prepare students for the rigors of college courses. Through his studies, Benji has already begun to form an idea of what he might want to do with his future. “I’m interested in economics because I think it’s very important to our society and interconnected with many parts of it. With that, I’m interested in a career in economics and economic policy, or in finances.” But let’s not get too far ahead, as Benji still has plenty of time to enjoy the experience that is Gig Harbor High School. He’s currently playing basketball and competes in football, and he hopes to someday soon become a leader on both teams. “In my freshman year, my football teammates voted for me to win the team’s leadership award, based on respect on and off the field,” he stated. Benji has been playing his two favorite sports his entire life and looks forward to accomplishing great things on the field and on the court. When he’s not at practice or doing homework, you’ll find him enjoying what teenagers do most—listening to music and spending time with his friends.

eninsula High School sophomore Chloe Blalock remembers picking up the pom poms and learning her first routines back in the second grade. She was instantly hooked on firing up a crowd, and these days you’ll find her cheering on her Seahawks all season long. While cheer is a full-time commitment, she enjoys several other ventures both at school and outside the classroom. “On top of my responsibilities at school and cheer, I run a successful online recycled clothing website. I also post social media for a local store that includes photos,” she explained. Chloe also enjoys volunteering her time at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church. While Chloe has many interests, she is really intrigued by the various history classes she’s taken at the school. “I love learning about how things have evolved and how it affects
us now. History repeats itself. I really enjoy learning the history of fashion too,” she said. While she still has a couple of years left at Peninsula, Chloe already has her eyes set on moving just a bit further north and enrolling at the University of Washington, where she can envision becoming a dermatologist. “I have always been interested in skin care. I am knowledgeable on all the new trends, and my friends and family always come to me for tips.” Between cheer, school, volunteering, and helping run a business, there’s a lot on Chloe’s plate, but she’s as excited as ever to be so involved in the school and the surrounding community. She’s also thankful to the many teachers who’ve had a positive impact on her life. “In middle school, a couple of my favorite teachers were Mrs. Smith and Mr. Carmody. GIG HARBOR WELCOMES A NEW MAYOR Tracie Markley: The mayor who listens

N
o doubt you’ve heard, but longtime resident and Peninsula High School graduate Tracie Markley is the new Gig Harbor mayor, and she has high hopes for the future. “Even though we are still somewhat restricted due to COVID-19, I have some ideas for how we can engage with our citizens face-to-face. I feel that is extremely important as we come out of this pandemic. I am excited for the new council members who have come on board as well. They have all expressed a desire to work together …. We are starting fresh, and it feels really good to take a collective breath and move forward,” says Tracie. Tracie Markley first moved to Gig Harbor in 1982 with her parents and two sisters. Her father moved here to pioneer a church, and did so for 30 years.

"We are starting fresh, and it feels really good to take a collective breath and move forward."
The church is still active today. Growing up in her family, Tracie would say that her dad knew no strangers, and neither did they. That resounding value has been passed on through how Tracie herself lives in Gig Harbor today, with her husband Joshua of 20 years and two teenage daughters. She is raising her family in the same place and with the same integrity that she was raised with. With the same love. Just out of high school, Tracie became the youngest licensed real estate agent in Gig Harbor. She was only 18. This is part of what has led Tracie to be so well-known by, and so involved in, our community. Her experience in real estate, mortgages, advertising, office management and human resources has led Tracie to be a solution finder; solutions that she has found as a result of truly listening to people, their needs, their hopes, and their difficulties. Listening is what has allowed Tracie to provide real results and connect her clients to resources that provided real solutions.

What especially marks Tracie as unique is her ability not only to listen and respond, but to use those skills for service. She served as parks commissioner for two years, and then as City councilmember from 2019 on. She was elected to council just shy of the beginning of the pandemic, which had the effect of showing her outstanding value to Gig Harbor. During the pandemic she navigated the unknown by listening to the needs of our city and responding in kind. It has been a balancing act of recognizing needs and providing assurances during uncertain times. Through it all she has held fast to the knowledge of the character of Gig Harbor. Our resiliency, our care for our neighbors, our connection to all that makes this place so special. Tracie reminds us that we have a lot to be proud of, while not ignoring that there is still much to be done. Electing Tracie Markley as our mayor means that we are confident in her ability to listen to the needs of our city, while recognizing the unique value of the place we all call home.
Putting You & Your Family First The team at Harbor Family Law wish you and your loved ones a healthy and happy New Year. We are here to serve you with experience, compassion, and integrity.
HAPPY New Year!

ELECTING TRACIE MARKLEY AS OUR MAYOR MEANS THAT WE ARE CONFIDENT IN HER ABILITY TO LISTEN TO THE NEEDS OF OUR CITY, WHILE RECOGNIZING THE UNIQUE VALUE OF THE PLACE WE ALL CALL HOME.
48
As a city, Gig Harbor is very connected. Everyone is very involved in what’s going on in government service; we like to know where we’re going and who is taking us there. Tracie has promised to continue to bring stability, civil discourse, and transparency in her position as mayor. She has promised to listen to the heartbeat and the footfalls of the people and the history that make up Gig Harbor. She will do this in much the same way that she has done everything up until now, by connecting, listening, collaborating, and providing real solutions.
It would be silly to say, “Welcome to Gig Harbor, Tracie!” to such a longtime veteran of our city. So perhaps a more appropriate exaltation would be something like “Thank you” or “We’re excited to be working with you!” While both of these are true, perhaps the simplest smile and hello will suffice. It’s not as if we don’t know you, Tracie. Gig Harbor electing you as mayor seems like the right thing. We need someone to continue to bridge the gap between that which might divide us, and you’ve shown that you’re capable of doing that. And we’re willing to do that with you.
“I have every confidence that we will rise to the challenge and overcome any obstacle standing in our way. This is our city. We need to protect and cherish it. Gig Harbor is a true gem. I’m so optimistic for our bright future and so incredibly honored to serve this community with honor and integrity. Thank you for putting your trust in me. Here's to you, Gig Harbor!” says Tracie.
So, cheers to a wonderful few years, Tracie. Wherever we find ourselves, we’ll no doubt end up there together. And together, the journey is well worth it.

Where Patients Thrive Gig Harbor clinic offers lasting solutions to your health-related needs
By Jillian Chandler
I
t was eight years ago when Dr. Christopher Stadtherr had an epiphany. As a specialist in hospital medicine, he had come to the realization that approximately 80 percent of what is done in health care falls under the same disease process, insulin resistance, which is driven by lifestyle. “Insulin resistance is responsible for the vast majority of chronic diseases that are relevant to us today,” affirms Chris, “from manifestations of the metabolic syndrome such as high blood pressure, obesity, and abnormal cholesterol, to later complications such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, cancer, and propensity for infection.” After doing extensive self-study into the science of nutrition and chronic disease, Chris would begin to incorporate some of these principles into his hospital practice while educating patients who had long suffered terrible medical advice. “The standard advice of 'eat less and move more' is terribly unhelpful—it is oversimplified and ignores the complexities of our environment and the drivers of hunger,” shares Chris. “It's important to realize that these metabolic diseases are a recent epidemic, exploding in the past 70 years. In the early 20th century, obesity and cardiovascular disease were virtually unheard of. These are diseases of lifestyle, and thus they are modifiable.” More than diet and exercise need to be addressed in order to improve metabolic health—things like sleep, emotional health, and environmental factors. Therefore, Chris wanted to address the underlying problem, “the driver of modern disease,” by offering a comprehensive program to guide individuals through not only reversing their chronic disease but also optimizing their metabolic health and functional status. “My goal is to partner with individuals of all ages to improve their health spans—the length of time that people remain healthy and functional, not just alive.” To make a positive impact on the health of the community and address the underlying problems, Chris transitioned away from hospital care to open his own clinic—Revitalize Metabolic Health—in September of 2021. “Having worked in both primary care and hospital medicine, I am well-versed in the entire spectrum of chronic disease,” affirms Chris. “Managing critically ill patients in the hospital has given me insight into what it takes to avoid these potentially devastating consequences of poor metabolic health.” At Revitalize Metabolic Health, Chris has designed his clinic to allow for long face-to-face appointment times—with the initial appointment lasting a minimum of 90 minutes, as Chris says, “It is impossible to make meaningful change to complex medical problems when restricted by the standard 10-minute medical appointment.

“Transitioning away from hospital care and opening my own clinic now allows me to make a positive impact on the health of many more people, hopefully before they suffer complications that land them in the hospital or with chronic disability,” he shares. Services at the clinic are based on a subscription model, whereby the initial appointment grants the patient access to Dr. Chris for the entire month. Subsequent monthly subscriptions offer the same exclusive access to his services, allowing patients to interact with him via phone, text, email, or follow-up face-to-face or virtual appointments. “This model allows for continued guidance and adjustments to personalize your treatment plan in order to better achieve your goals.”
Price transparency is an important aspect of direct care, and Chris utilized the cash-pay model, which allows the physician to deliver medical care that is based on what is best for the patient—not insurance company mandates. It is important to Chris to stay current on topics far beyond the discussions in mainstream medical journals, looking for innovative approaches, as well as self-experimentation. “I won’t recommend any lifestyle interventions that I haven’t sufficiently tried myself,” he affirms. In simple terms, Chris believes our bodies should be able to function efficiently whenever and however we wish them to. “Not only is my clinic focused on the identification, treatment, and reversal of chronic disease, but we aim to help individuals optimize their health and their bodies such that they can function better in all areas of their lives. Our goal is to help people thrive, not just survive.” His efforts to guide patients on restoring their health through nutrition and other lifestyle interventions have renewed his enthusiasm for patient care “in ways unimaginable,” he smiles. “The power of simple lifestyle modifications to transform one's health and thereby dramatically alter the trajectory of someone's life in a positive manner … It never gets old.”
You can Join Dr. Chris Stadtherr every other Saturday for Walk with a Doc, encouraging his patients, patients’ families, and community members to join him for some physical activity and conversation. He will give a brief presentation on a health topic at the beginning of each walk and answer questions for the participants during the walk. Walks, which are free and do not require pre-registration, begin at 9am along the Cushman Trail beginning at the Grandview Trailhead. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

THE EPIDEMIC OF INSULIN RESISTANCE The greatest threat to health in our modern world By Christopher J. Stadtherr, MD
I
nsulin resistance is now the most prevalent medical condition in the world, and yet many people are unaware of it. In health care, we are accustomed to talking about a myriad of diseases as if they are all separate entities, e.g. hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, obesity, etc. Aside from rare exceptions, though, these diseases are all due to one underlying condition—insulin resistance. Insulin - A vital hormone The hormone insulin tells the cells of your body what to do with energy. As glucose levels rise, your body compensates by releasing more insulin, which signals your body to either use glucose as a fuel or to store it as energy. A limited amount of glucose gets stored as glycogen in muscle tissue or liver, and the excess glucose gets turned into fat.
Insulin is not always problematic. In fact, it's vital to our physiology. Individuals who cannot produce insulin, as in type 1 diabetes mellitus, are unable to process or store glucose. Prior to the discovery of insulin, type 1 diabetes was fatal within weeks to months. In contrast, type 2 diabetes is characterized by high insulin levels that contribute to our bodies becoming insulin resistant. What is insulin resistance? Insulin resistance is a condition in which your body becomes less sensitive to insulin, and thus you must make more of it. Over time, this situation results in increased insulin levels. This process is driven by lifestyle factors (diet and activity), stress, and inflammation. The syndrome of insulin resistance is more commonly called the Metabolic

Let 2022 be the year that you decide to put your health first. When your body is healthy, everything in your life becomes healthier too! Living a healthy lifestyle can be easy to maintain by simply making small choices that lead to big, positive results. Get plenty of sleep. Drink enough water. Eat fresh foods. Move your body. Nurture your mind. Caring for your body allows you the energy, both physically and mentally, to succeed in all aspects of your life.

Syndrome, which is defined by the presence of three of the following five criteria: • Abdominal obesity • Elevated blood pressure • Elevated fasting blood glucose • Elevated triglycerides in the blood • Low level of HDL cholesterol in the blood These findings are directly attributable to the higher levels of insulin and are responsible for the increased risk of numerous chronic health conditions. In fact, studies suggest that insulin resistance is the most important determinant of ill health. For most people, the first sign of insulin resistance may be the accumulation of abdominal fat, while the other markers are more subtle and may go undetected for a long time. Metabolic Syndrome is common It is estimated that 88 percent of Americans have at least one component of the Metabolic Syndrome, according to a study in 2019. In addition, 35 percent of Americans meet the criteria (at least three components) for Metabolic Syndrome—19.5 percent among those aged 20 to 39 and increasing to 48.6 percent of those aged 60 and older. Unfortunately, most affected individuals are not aware of the presence of Metabolic Syndrome, even though their high insulin levels may be detectable many years before they’re diagnosed with diabetes or a related condition. The following diagnoses are consequences of persistently high levels of insulin:
• Obesity • Type 2 Diabetes • Hypertension • Cardiovascular disease • Stroke • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) • Erectile Dysfunction • Fatty Liver • Cancers—especially breast, prostate, and colon • Dementia These common diseases of modern civilization are all just symptoms of the same underlying condition—insulin resistance, which is perhaps the greatest threat to our health in the modern world. With that knowledge in hand, what can we do to prevent these complications? What to do It is important to first identify any potential manifestations of insulin resistance, with a proper physical examination and laboratory evaluation. While it may not be possible to eliminate some of the contributing factors such as stress or inflammation, it is possible to reverse insulin resistance by certain lifestyle modifications.

When it comes to nutrition, it is important to reduce the intake of processed foods, particularly those that contain sugar, refined grains, and seed oils. Exercise can also improve insulin resistance by recruiting muscles to burn excess glucose. Any amount of physical activity can be beneficial, including resistance training, aerobic activity, and even walking.

aking care of your overall health— including your heart—is imperative for self-care. Afterall, a healthy heart is a happy heart.
As we begin a new year, make it a priority to adopt a healthy lifestyle and habits into your daily routine. As the heart is a muscle, the more exercise and activity one gets, the stronger and healthier the heart will become. Makes sense, right? Living an active lifestyle accompanied by a proper nutrient-dense diet, plenty of water— and don’t forget sleep!—is imperative to maintaining your overall physical wellness. When your body is healthy, your brain functions better, and your mental wellness will flourish too. And if all goes well, you can avoid emergency situations like suffering from a heart attack or stroke. Though every day is a day to be aware of heart disease, the nation's number one killer of Americans, February has been deemed American Heart Month to continue to shine a light on this epidemic. Since first proclaimed by former president Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, ever since, presidents have annually declared February to be American Heart Month. Here are some easy tips to remember to keep your heart healthy and happy: • Maintain a healthy weight • Control blood sugar and cholesterol • Treat high blood pressure • Don’t smoke • Get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week • Schedule regular checkups
With a strong link between diet and heart disease, it's important to be aware of what you consume and how it may affect your health, from blood pressure and cholesterol levels to inflammation and triglycerides. If you're looking to maximize your heart health, be sure you're incorporating the following into your diet: • Leafy green vegetables (think kale, spinach and collard greens) • Berries (blueberries, blackberries and strawberries) • Avocados • Fatty fish and fish oil (salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines) • Walnuts, almonds and seeds • Beans • Tomatoes • Garlic • Olive oil • Dark chocolate Adopting healthy habits now can help one avoid the risk for heart disease and stroke in the future. To better prepare yourself for an emergency situation, if it does arise for you or a loved one, make now the time to freshen up on your lifesaving skills, such as CPR. Dawn Townshend of Dawn of A New Day Safety Training and Consulting in Gig Harbor offers CPR and First Aid training. For additional details, or to schedule an appointment, she can be reached at 253.358.8217 or by visiting CPRDawn.com.

What is your most important sense? Which would you least want to lose? Safe bet, most of you thought “vision.” Now, when was your last eye exam? Has it been over a year? Like I tell my patients, if you can’t remember when your last exam was, then you are overdue. Wait, you’ve never had an eye exam? If you think, “I see fine, I don’t need one,” then you have no idea what we can find in an eye exam, regardless of how well you see. So many systemic (body) diseases can be found in the eyes, most without any symptoms or sensations whatsoever. Diabetes can damage the whole body; in the eye it causes leaky blood vessels. I recently saw advanced diabetes in a patient who didn’t even know he had diabetes. Same with high blood pressure, which can cause a stroke in the eyes. Cancer, like breast or colon or lung, can spread to the eyes; I found lung cancer in the eyes of a patient who didn’t even know he had lung cancer! A smattering of others: Lyme disease, sickle cell, AIDS, Graves’ disease, multiple sclerosis, shingles, sarcoidosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis … yep, all can show up in the eyes—even if you see fine and feel fine. I have a lot of patients dread the “air puff ” test. I wish I could say a group of sadist optometrists came up with the test just to torture you, but it measures the fluid pressure in the eyes to check for risk of glaucoma. This eye disease has, you guessed it, no symptoms or sensations but can cause blindness. Be happy to know there are alternatives to the “air puff ” that tell us the same info but don’t scare the bejesus out of you. Nearsightedness means you can see up close without glasses, but everything far away is blurry; it is also called myopia. Myopia is associated with serious eye diseases which can cause blindness. We used to tell kids, “Your vision is going to get worse as you get older,” which in turn increases the risk of those diseases, but now we don’t have to. Treatment is available to control the myopia and hopefully prevent those diseases. This needs to be started early to have the best outcome, so pre-teens and teens make great candidates for the different therapy options. I grew up to become very nearsighted, so I understand what your kids are going through.
Adults who are nearsighted aren’t left out. They may be eligible for myopia treatment with overnight vision correction, or orthokeratology. No surgery, no glasses or contacts during the daytime. I also call it eye voodoo. Are you suffering from anything from mild headaches to migraines? Eye strain to neck pain? Difficulty focusing? Feeling like you just can’t see well even though you may see perfectly fine at 20/20? Your eyes may be misaligned, or not focusing at the same image simultaneously, causing your brain to work overtime, creating a multitude of symptoms. An innovative test can determine if the Neurolens® could alleviate your pain. How about identity? Do you prefer a “vanilla” visit, or are sprinkles more your style? Do you feel like a number or a family member? Need to cry? Want a hug? Want to show off your newest two, four-, eight-legged friend? Are you just taken care of, or do you feel special and appreciated? Find an office that jives with you and has the innovations and frames and equipment worthy of you. Make it your goal to have an eye exam this year. I promise it will be (relatively) easy. I welcome all suggestions and questions for future articles. Feel free to send them my way. Eye Candy Optical and the Myopia Control & Treatment Center is located in the Uptown Gig Harbor Shopping Plaza. Find out more at EyeCandy-Optical.com or by calling 253.432.4303. You can reach out to Dr. Kandi Moller with questions or article suggestions at info@eyecandy-optical.com.
DERMAL FILLER WHAT ARE THEY, AND WHY ARE THEY SO POPULAR? By Laura Jane Brougher RN, Master Aesthetics Injector and Skin Rejuvenation Expert @thefaceangel @gigharboraesthetics
D
ermal fillers can have a lovely, positive impact toward restoring a fresh and rejuvenated look in the face. Dermal fillers are soft, gel-like substances that are injected under the skin and onto the bone to restore the areas that are most affected by aging anatomy. When you look into the mirror and wonder what can be done to turn back the clock, dermal fillers are an important part of the plan. They can address a number of common concerns including: replacing volume loss in the mid-cheek area; enhancing the contour of the cheekbones; plumping the lips and filling in lip lines; smoothing out the creases that run from the side of the nose to the corners of the mouth; improving the jawline and increasing the projection of the chin. As we age, lost volume in the face can be restored with dermal fillers. Over time, age-related bone loss in the face can lead to retraction of the jawline and loss of high cheekbones. The facial muscles also decrease in volume and elasticity, and deflation and movement of fat pads further accentuates the signs of aging. Finally, the skin stretches and loses elasticity. Compounded by the loss of scaffolding provided by fat, muscle and bone, this leads to wrinkles, sagging skin, and other familiar signs of aging. Dermal fillers can be composed of a variety of substances. The most common compound used in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin, and it plays a major role in keeping skin hydrated and volumized. HA fillers, depending on their specific chemical makeup, can last from six months to two-plus years before being gradually absorbed by the body. Examples of HA fillers you may have heard of are Juvederm, Restylane
and Versa. They come in different formulations that are used according to the area of the face it’s being used. Aging in the face shows up as volume loss, drooping skin, a tired look, deflation and hollowing where there was once fullness. (Think apple of the cheek.) Dermal fillers can also be used in younger clients to enhance or balance the face. Dermal fillers, an injectable treatment, should be performed in a clinical office by properly trained medical professionals. When seeking an aesthetic injector, I would definitely recommend going to an injector who does this work full time, and have an expert consultation. HA fillers can be dissolved if you are unhappy with the results, however, with experienced expert injectors this is less likely to happen. Here at Gig Harbor Aesthetics, we have over 18 years of injection and skin rejuvenation experience. We can be reached at 253. 514. 6766 or GigHarborAesthetics.com.

THE NICHE SPORT OF
DRY TOOLING LEVELING THE PLAYING FIELD FOR CLIMBERS BY DAVID GLADISH
S
parks fly as a climber scratches her way up a vertical rock face. A glint of light flashes off the steel pick of an ice axe. Ropes anchored to the top of a cliff, flutter in a light breeze, lifelines for the daring few pushing themselves to ascend the steep metamorphic rock on a cold winter day. The movement of the athletes might look familiar to a growing audience of climbing enthusiasts, those who are aware of climbing from watching the Oscar-winning film Free Solo or from following the sport, which was included in the 2020 Olympics for the first time. This type of climbing is much different, however. Instead of climbers using bare hands and tight-fitting shoes to tackle a route, dry toolers use ice axes, called tools, and crampons that are strapped to mountain-climbing boots. Here at the “crag” (the term used for a climbing area), these shiny, weapon-like devices are used to balance on thin rock edges, slotted into fissures and cracks in the wall, torqued into precarious holes. The use of this gear, originally designed for mountain climbing, seems out of place for such a unique application. Yet to the developers of this climbing area, located near North Bend, Washington, creating a training ground for this sport has opened new possibilities for inclusion and diversity that historically have not been a part of climbing. For Wayne Wallace, a climber and a developer of this crag, dry tooling is an opportunity to climb with people of varying economic, physical and social backgrounds. Because dry tooling is such a niche sport that is much newer than rock and ice climbing, there are many reasons why it is gaining popularity for a

variety of people. “There’s no preexisting scene or standards, so it’s open for everyone,” said Wallace. “If you are willing to put up with a little rain, you are welcome here.” Kyle Willis is part of the tight-knit cohort of climbers establishing routes at Wayne’s World (fittingly named after Mr. Wallace). He explains, “The tools and crampons are expensive to start, so there is a lot of pooling of the community’s equipment. This levels the playing field and creates a community and sharing aspect of its own.” Despite the opportunity to share equipment, you never know who will be at the crag, so being self-sufficient and knowing how to set up climbs is paramount to progressing in the sport. Since the creation of the first route at Wayne’s World in the winter of 2020, Wayne and company have hosted several clinics to teach newcomers the technical skills necessary to get up the wall. Being grassroots, and unofficial, there was no advertising or promotion of the free clinics, simply a wordof-mouth gathering of people in the know. However, there is hope that as the sport grows, official festivals and clinics will be available in the area, similar to the well-established Bozeman Ice Festival which teaches dry tooling classes. During their classes, Wayne and Willis noticed that unlike rock and ice climbing, which is often dominated by white males, dry tooling has brought out more women and people of color. “During our first event with 50-plus first-time dry toolers (in a complete downpour!), half were women,” said Willis. The fact that almost everyone is new to the sport makes it less intimidating for anyone wanting to try it. There

are few expectations regarding who should be good at the sport, and there is very little media portraying the archetype of what a dry tool climber looks like. While dry tooling remains the most obscure discipline amongst the sport of climbing, its counterpart, ice climbing, is a great example of how the BIPOC community is being accepted and recognized. The 2020 film Black Ice—about a group of black climbers from a gym in Memphis who traveled to Montana to hone their skills on ice climbs—drew critical acclaim and opened many conversations amongst climbers from across the country on how to be more inclusive at our local climbing areas. Prominent news outlets such as CNN, Forbes, and Men’s Journal caught wind of the film and helped spread the positive message of diversity in climbing. Marcus Garcia, a Colorado-based climber and the lead coach for the youth Team USA Ice Climbing, is one of the few world-class athletes who is making a living partially through dry tooling. “The most exciting thing I see is just how inclusive this sport is. Out at the crag or in the gym. I have witnessed nothing but positive inspirational thoughts to those first trying it. Or those trying hard,” said Garcia. He believes that there is equality in the sport because everyone uses the same tools to climb. “It’s available to more people quicker because all you have to do is hold on to a grip rather than deal with each handhold, so it’s an open door for people that don’t have the same physical gifts,” echoed Wallace. For some, dry tooling is a means to hone skills to climb mountains that involve a variety of ice, snow, and wet or dry rock. Having the ability to climb rock with tools and crampons makes it possible to scale peaks that would be improbable to climb with just rock shoes. Others see dry tooling as the end game. For Wallace, developing the dry tooling area was an opportunity to create a relatively safe environment to practice the sport. “It’s a chance for people to go somewhere that’s not comfortable, but the risks are minimized. You can get out of your comfort zone without having the tough consequences.”
The fact that almost everyone is new to the sport makes it less intimidating for anyone wanting to try it. 62

Being a developer of dry tooling routes is a thankless task. Wayne and his crew have put a lot of money into anchor equipment and bolts that protect climbers on each climbing route. Developing a climbing zone involves “cleaning” the cliff by bashing off loose rocks with hammers and crowbars, scrubbing excess lichen off slick areas with wire brushes, and even cutting new trail to get to the climbs. This can take years, months, or weeks, depending on the time and dedication the creators have. While no official permits were needed to establish the climbing area, the cliffs fall within the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, which is subject to multiple-use management that allows the development of rock climbs within its jurisdiction. Additionally, the developers factored in the quality of rock when choosing to establish the climbs at a particular cliff. While there is no official committee in the world of climbing development, there is a code of expectations. In general, a climbing zone used for dry tooling is not going to be ideal for climbing with just hands and feet because the edges are too small for purchase. There is also concern that climbing with tools and crampons on established pure rock climbs will ruin the routes by pulling off key holds and scratching up delicate foot placements, so finding a specific cliff that didn’t already have rock climbs established was important. For climbers who are interested in trying out dry tooling, park at the trailhead for Dirty Harry’s Peak off exit 38 close to North Bend, Washington. Once you cross under the I-90 overpass, you arrive at the trailhead. From there, head up the main trail. As the developers of the crag said, “Those who are motivated will find it.” I’ll let you in on the secret: You can find specific details of routes and how to get to the climbing area on Mountain Project, an online resource and app that is the most comprehensive database for finding climbing routes across the country. Wayne’s World climbing area may be the highest quality dry tooling cliff in the Seattle area, yet there are other crags to be found throughout Washington and nearby states. Spokane’s South Hill offers climbers a spot to hone their craft on a wall named Lincoln Park. A cliff off the Mount Baker Highway gives Bellingham climbers a local spot. A mecca for ice climbing, as well as many options for dry tooling, can be found further afield in Hyalite Canyon just outside of Bozeman, Montana. While dry tooling is still on the fringe, it is attracting enough interest that there are now a few gyms throughout the country that have space specifically

The Ice Coop in Boulder, Colorado, was the first to open in late 2019, offering world-class routes for enthusiasts and beginners alike. tooling, this book describes the movement and equipment that is necessary for dry tooling, while simultaneously focusing on the sport of ice climbing. The beauty of dry tooling is that counterintuitively to the name, you can dry tool any time of year! While rock climbing requires dry rock to keep hands and feet from slipping off, and ice climbing needs enough ice to be formed, you can dry tool on wet rock, dry rock and icy rock. It was a wet Northwest day when I found myself tying into a rope at Wayne’s Wall for the first time. I was immediately welcomed by several climbers I had never met. In the past, I’ve always relied on the partners I go climbing with to share belays and get up routes, so it was a surprise when these strangers offered to climb with me right away. Before I knew it, I was putting my life in their hands as they held the rope while I climbed up the wall. It was not until I got down that I realized I accidently used a set of my new partner’s tools, thinking they were mine. We both laughed, just two climbers, sharing a new experience and learning together.

Your Mental Wellness Healthy mind, healthy body by RACHEL KELLY

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
Any way that we can reduce stress and focus on healthy choices that make our bodies feel good is a win. step into this new year all a little bit wiser. We want and we hope for better news on the horizon, but with an understanding that health doesn’t happen just once a year. It happens every day. It happens with us first, and then what we do, say and think affects those around us. Our little world, what happens in our circles and with our body, makes all the difference. Here are three focuses to make this year one of mental wellness. One of the many onslaughts that wage war with mental health this time of year is diet culture. Should we try to figure out good choices for our body? Yes. Do we need nutrient-rich foods? Well, yeah. But do we need to focus on getting no more than 1,400 calories (the calorie intake of a toddler) a day? No. What about clean eating? Is that processed granola bar dirty? Nope. Sometimes an emphasis on wash-board abs and a focus on the “used to be'' of our bodies causes more stress than it’s worth. Stress reverses wellness and puts our bodies into a caloriepacking mode. Stress also shortens our life span and steals away our feeling of personal safety. Any way that we can reduce stress and focus on healthy choices that make our bodies feel good is a win. Feeling good, and feeling full, helps us not to put ourselves in desperate situations where our emotions and nutrition ping pong our health back and forth. So, this year, focus on eating well. This means snack often, feel full, and get in those fruits and veggies however they come. Whether that means you eat a little more sushi on the go or end your day with some home-popped corn and roasted nuts. This year, drop the stress of diet culture and embrace the fluctuations that your body is bound to go through. Treat your body well with the knowledge that it will affect how you feel mentally. Another thing that everyone stresses over this time of year is exercise. “Fiveminute daily exercises that will make you ripped” or “How to bring back your pre-kid body.” One can’t go from a couch-warming pandemic potato to a fullfledged cage fighter all at once. We may feel like shredding it, but our bodies require kindness. With that in mind, focus on movement that can be done regardless of the weather. Exercise that doesn’t feel so much like exercise but relief. Getting out and getting up should feel like letting off steam. So go dancing, take up roller blading, or take long walks to nowhere. Whatever it is that gets you up and about, do that. Put on the tunes and go do the thing that gives you joy, giving yourself full credit for time well spent. Take up a new hobby (or more than one!) that can be done in rain or shine, snow or hail. Maybe you live by water, so take up beach combing or swimming. Get a kayak or a wakeboard. Live in the mountains? Snowshoeing is a fantastic exercise, and often brings you to new places you might not usually go. Or maybe you live in the city, so take some dance lessons. Or walk to work, hedging out that extra 30 minutes to arrive at your leisure. Take the kids to the park and play hide and go seek. Whatever gets you up and going is an activity to celebrate. promotes health and energy, and where there’s more energy there’s more mental clarity. Taking a welldeserved mental break to be active will even make you more productive when you get back to work, and is well worth the investment. Another little piece of wisdom that we may not have valued in past new years is the value of an environment that cultivates joy. A lot of us are home a lot more these days, and we want to live in a home and a place that makes us happy. For some this has meant that we’ve moved to a different neighborhood or suburb, with a better house and a closer-knit community. For others this has meant renovations to our homes or doing that deep cleaning. But there’s more to a home than just how it looks; there’s also how it feels. Cultivating an environment of mental wellness means that our surroundings make us feel good too. So maybe this means making a little hot beverage station in the kitchen, ready for whenever the desire for hot tea strikes. Or maybe you like to read and need to make a corner or two designated for the worthy cause. Perhaps you need another streaming app, new Bluetooth speakers, or a bigger bathtub. Swapping blinds for curtains may let in more light, or less. More indoor plants? A new pet? A breakfast nook? Whatever it is, do it. After all, once you’re done with that new hobby that you’ve picked up (cross-country skiing?), you may need the rest. This year we focus on the few, pouring into the people that we love and who love us the best. And if we don’t have many of those, we can strike out for those relationships that make a positive difference in our lives. Clearly communicating our needs, paying attention to the here and now, and allowing our community to support us and us them, we give a huge boost to our mental health. And with that, we make our little world a little better.

Moving Through Winter DON’T BE STAGNANT! by COLIN ANDERSON

uring our beautiful Northwest summers, it’s rather easy to stay active. It’s rare that stormy weather lasts for more than a couple days and, even in the biggest heat waves, there are places in which to take a swim and cool off. It’s also easier to engage in accidental exercise activities such as mowing the lawn, taking the dogs for a walk, kicking a soccer ball or shooting hoops with the kids, or just a leisurely stroll along the water with a friend. While there are some who look forward to the cold of winter, many others retreat to their couches and beds, gorging on streaming services until the cold dissipates and it’s fun to go outside again. While it’s comforting to curl up in a blanket with snacks and warm drinks, the body craves movement. It might take a little more effort in the winter, but staying active will help keep both your mind and

body right, and also lead you into the active summer lifestyle so many of us enjoy. Many people join a gym in January as part of their resolution to get in shape or drop unwanted pounds. Where options were once pretty limited, there are a number of specialty fitness gyms that cater to a multitude of interests and ability levels. A traditional gym is a good place to start, as it contains a large amount of equipment for both endurance and strength building. Treadmills, ellipticals and bikes, free weights and muscle-targeting machines allow you to choose your own adventure when keeping active. Most health clubs employ a personal training staff that can help create a personalized fitness plan for you based upon your goals. Each also has a variety of classes from yoga and spin to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and dance.

If you’ve tried the gym before with limited success, perhaps a smaller, more targeted approach can work for you. CrossFit gyms, as well as cycle, HIIT and yoga studios offer smaller spaces and often more attention from training staff. Participants encourage each other to succeed, making for a fun and rewarding experience. Many will let you try a class for free and offer various levels of membership from unlimited to a few sessions per month. Working out at home has also come a long way. You can spend many thousands of dollars on top-of-the-line exercise bikes, home gyms and group training courses, but, if your budget is limited, there are nearly infinite home workout videos available on YouTube and other platforms. Just pick up a few free weights and a mat, and you are good to go. One simple way to fight the winter bulge is doing small blocks of exercise while watching your favorite show. If you have an exercise bike, take a seat and pedal slowly through the entire movie—you’ll be surprised how many calories you’ll burn without breaking a serious sweat. Watching your favorite sports team for a few hours? Consider doing block exercises during the commercial breaks. Rotate through pushups, squats, lunges and sit-ups during commercials, and go back to lounging when the game resumes. While fitness is an individual goal, having a partner creates a sense of accountability for both parties. Grab a friend or loved one and make a plan to meet for a certain class, go for a long walk, or even just have them send you a friendly text reminder (or a post-it note on your mirror) each day to do something active. It’s easier to make excuses for yourself, but when someone else is counting on you and holding you accountable, it’s much harder to skip knowing you’ll disappoint them. There are also plenty of winter accidental exercise opportunities available that are both fun and memorable. You can strap into a pair of skates and take a few laps around an area ice rink. Your kids enjoy sledding, so why not trudge up and down the hill a few times and slide down with them; they’ll love you for it. Even getting outside in the rain to splash in puddles or building a snowman or snow fort in the backyard, will engage the muscles

and burn a few extra calories. While being careful not to overexert, clear snow from your driveway and sidewalk and help out a neighbor or two with theirs. A day on the slopes is also a great way to enjoy the beauty of our area while getting the heart rate up for a few hours. There are places for every level of skier or snowboarder, and many have tubing hills as well. Cross-country skiing works just about every muscle in your body, as well as endurance, and can be enjoyed at a leisurely sight-seeing pace or serious calorie burn. Snow-shoe trails are another great way to get in a few extra steps while taking in the natural beauty of the area. Like all exercise, the toughest part about exercise in the winter is committing to do it. An added bonus to winter outdoor activity is the body tends to burn even more calories, as not only are your muscles and lungs engaged in activity, but your body is also using energy to keep warm. While we yearn for the wonderful warm spring and summer days of a round of golf, jogging and playing outside, let’s not forget to keep ourselves fit so we can enjoy all those wonderful activities as soon as the cold clears and the flowers bloom.

TIPS maintainin FOR g your wellness by TAYLOR SHILLAM
It’s 2022, and a new year is the perfect time to renew, revisit or recreate your health-related goals. While “wellness” can be a subjective term, there are a few key elements that are universal to almost any definition of what it means to be well. Taking care of your physical health, monitoring stress, and maintaining positive relationships are among them, and often all it takes is engaging in simple daily habits that cultivate your overall well-being. The best strategies for achieving better health are designed for the long term, through building on small changes to consistently feel better and enhance your quality of life. This year, cultivate a happier, healthier you by incorporating these aspects of physical and mental wellness.
1
80 80
Incorporate Daily Movement It’s common for fitness goals to restart with the new year, but it’s easy to forget that they don’t have to be major, extreme, or involve a hefty time commitment to be successful. Instead, focus on daily movement as a healthy outlet, a means to break up the day and keep your energy levels lifted. The best way to get the most out of your routine is to focus on an activity you enjoy and can stick with. By dedicating a portion of time to your fitness each day, you can chip away at that discovery, but getting started is the first step, and staying consistent is the key.
3
Strengthen Your Mental Wellness
Boost Your Immune System
Feeling your best often starts with your mindset, but it’s not uncommon for mental health to take a back seat to physical fitness and nutrition. The truth is, they are all related and require maintenance—and the good news is, you can exercise your mental health just like a muscle. A wide range of mental health support is available, whether it’s self-care in the form of journaling and meditation, seeking support from a friend or family member, or looking to a therapist, either through in-person sessions or the increasingly available forms of Telehealth. For an added boost, inexpensive braintraining apps like Peak, Elevate and Lumosity give the brain a daily dose of challenge and engagement.
Your immune system doesn’t only need support when you’re sick but all throughout the year. But, for many, immune system support remains on the back burner until it’s desperately needed. Daily immune support through nourishing foods, supplementing vitamins and doses of natural sunshine are the best ways to keep your inherent defense system strong. This is where the concept of food as medicine really shows its truth. Fueling the body with nutrient-dense food helps ensure an adequate variety of vitamins and minerals in the diet—a foundation you can build on with select vitamins and supplements like zinc, vitamin C and elderberry. Adding a boost of vitamin D helps round out a simple, yet effective, immunestrengthening arsenal.

Building connection and community are elements of wellness that are sometimes overlooked but so important to a happier, healthier outlook and state of being. In our increasing reliance on technology, interactions have become more digitized. For many of us, that healthy balance lies within keeping benefits of technology without forgoing the connections you can only make with face-to-face interactions. Reading facial expressions, verbalizing your thoughts and feelings, experiencing nonverbal cues and real laughter, are all critical forms of communication. Starting this month, challenge yourself to reconnect more in person. Giving yourself more opportunities to be seen, heard and supported (in real life) can pay off in countless rewards, including better moods and a more positive outlook.
It’s true that life’s stressors are, to a degree, inevitable. The key to maintaining wellness in this aspect of life is the response to stress by adapting habits that encourage a healthier stress response within the body by incorporating a few additions and lifestyle modifications: eating more nutrient-dense foods that support the body in its fight-orflight state, finding healthy outlets for stress release (anything from exercise, to journaling and meditation, to art, cooking or travel), and becoming in-tune with ourselves enough to recognize the sources of stress in our lives (some that we may be able to eliminate). As you enter 2022, take a moment to reflect on what your biggest stressors have been, and what new approach may serve you best.
5
A new year is here, and your best, happiest self is achievable in 2022. Giving yourself a lasting wellness boost this year doesn’t have to require a major overhaul—and right now is the perfect time to invest in your wellness by taking small, intentional steps to create long-lasting habits.

WHISTLER, BRITISH COLUMBIA
A Winter Wonderland By Marguerite Cleveland
A
visit to Whistler, British Columbia, is magical in the wintertime. The charming village nestled at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains comes alive as skiers and snowboarders return to visit the largest ski resort in North America. With the U.S. and Canadian border now open, you can once again enjoy the breathtaking Sea to Sky Highway on a winter road trip to this festive town. Whistler Village is massive with an endless array of shops, cafés, bars, galleries and restaurants—all in a pedestrian-only village. The towering mountains and lush forest surrounding the village are ripe for exploration with many trails. It really feels like another world when you arrive to explore this snowy paradise. Where to Stay The Westin Resort and Spa has the perfect location for your stay in Whistler. It is tucked away at the far end of the village up against Whistler Mountain. It is within walking distance of the gondolas, which whisk you up the mountain and the Village Stroll—the main street through the village. All rooms are fully equipped with mini kitchens and fireplaces. The resort has two towers with shops and restaurants in between. With a spa and both indoor and outdoor pools, you won’t want to leave the resort. Insider Tip: Rooms in the same category can vary in size. When checking in, see what your options are. For families, consider booking an adjoining room to a one-bedroom suite. It will give you two bedrooms and two bathrooms with plenty of space for a family. Where to Eat Dining is such a wonderful experience in Whistler. There is such a variety of options, from budget to high-end luxury and farm to table.

ARAXI IS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL
RESTAURANTS IN WHISTLER AND IS
FAMED WORLDWIDE FOR ITS FARM-TOTABLE EXCELLENCE.
There is something for everyone. The El Furniture Warehouse offers everything on the menu for $5.95 to $7.95, which is a bargain in Whistler, and is surprisingly good for the price. A dining tradition in Whistler is cheese fondue, and one of the most authentic can be found at Crepe Montagne, a small restaurant located on a side street. It is very cozy inside with tables tucked into every corner. The fondue is outstanding, with both cheese and meat varieties available. They also offer a popular breakfast and crepes served either savory or sweet. Araxi is one of the original restaurants in Whistler and is famed worldwide for its farm-to-table excellence. The restaurant is very upscale but not stuffy. Parents will be surprised that they can enjoy a meal of this caliber with their children. Chef James Watt is a pioneer of farm-to-table dining with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Menus change throughout the year to highlight the best bounty of the season from local farmers, ranchers and fishermen. What to Do Winter sports-lovers are drawn to Whistler for the many outdoor adventure opportunities. Whistler-Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America with over 8,100 acres of snow-covered slopes that have over 200 marked trails, world-class terrain parks, 16 alpine bowls and three glaciers. The famous PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola takes you between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains, maximizing your ski time. When finished, you can ski right into the village for the ultimate ski-in/ski-out experience. For those who aren’t avid skiers, you can enjoy winter sightseeing by taking the Village Gondola to access the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola for a ride over the valley, between the two mountains, and free from the weather outside. Grab a drink at the Roundhouse Umbrella Bar, where you’ll be treated to incredible views on a sunny day. Whistler Blackcomb offers a variety of outdoor adventures including snowmobiling and dog sledding. For an interesting tour, check out the Whistler Winter Wonderland, a series of snowshoe tours on Whistler Mountain. The Medicine Trail tour will have you exploring a mysterious forest on an old trappers’ trail. Heading deep into the ancient forest of the Callaghan Valley, you will learn the history of the area and the traditional ways local plants were used for healing. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

These unique tours will take you throughout the resort exploring the outdoors, the history and heritage, cultural institutions, and food and drink. Download the mobile app, Go Whistler Tours, for both Apple and Android devices. The app is very easy to use, and the tours are very informative. There are currently eight tours available, with new tours added regularly, providing immersive experiences and locations that are off the beaten path. The Audain Art Museum is an architectural treasure. Designed by Patkau Architects, the building has a long hallway adorned with luminous wood strips, one side that is floor-toceiling windows that look out into a forest— creating a work of art. It is stunning, especially if you are lucky enough to visit when it is snowing. The museum’s permanent collection of British Columbia art was donated by the founders Michael Audain and his wife Yoshiko Karasawa. For a truly relaxing time, walk from the parking lot through a spruce and cedar forest to the Scandinave Spa Whistler. This bastion of silence (no talking aloud once you enter the outdoor day spa) will have you feeling tranquil vibes in no time. The utter and complete quiet feels odd at first, but it helps to disconnect and clear your mind. Enjoy a series of hot, cold and relax, which takes place in pools both hot and cold, Nordic waterfalls, solariums, a Finnish wood-burning sauna, an outdoor firepit and so much more. Plan to bring a book and stay a few hours to achieve total relaxation. Insider Tip: Arrive right when the spa opens to avoid the crowds. It is very popular, especially when people come off the slopes from skiing.

As you get ready for your trip to Whistler, make sure you are prepared before crossing the border. Download the Arrive Canada app (see the Specifics) and follow the instructions. You will need proper documents (passport, enhanced driver’s license for your situation), the receipt or QR code from the Arrive Canada app, your vaccine card, and your COVID-19 test results (rapid antigen tests are not valid for this requirement). When returning to the U.S., there is no COVID-19 test required if you are driving. Allow extra time for crossing into Canada due to all the documents that must be checked. Also note, the COVID-19 test must be taken within 72 hours of your crossing, and the times are checked. You will be turned back at the border if your test is older than 72 hours. These requirements were current when this article was written, but as things are constantly changing, make sure to confirm the current requirements for your visit. Also be courteous to those behind you and have all the requirements for everyone traveling with you together to hand to the agent (and not in your trunk) so you don’t cause further delays.

I
A White Winter Wonderland
t was a year ago February that Gig Harbor was treated to an unexpected surprise it hadn't seen in years! Lots ... and we mean LOTS ... of snow! The snow continued to fall for several days, blanketing the city in fresh, white powder, causing a bit of havoc paired with a lot of fun for both children and adults alike. Local streets became sledding and ski hills, where those young and old could be seen bundled up, faces adorned with rosy cheeks and smiles. The magical winter wonderland lasted for just a few days but will be remembered for many years to come.

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO
94
|
Explore by Water
Have a Ball
Whether by sail, powerboat, kayak, SUP or electric boat, much of the city’s charm and natural wonders are best seen from the water.
Entertainment options abound, from Galaxy’s IMAX theaters or arcade games, duckpin bowling and a laser tag venue at Ocean5 to creative art classes with AR Workshop.
Support Local
Make Friends
Gig Harbor’s independent boutiques, artists and specialty shops dot the harbor—visits to the Westside and Uptown business districts are a fun excursion as well.
Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.
Tip a Glass
Take a Look Back
Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.
Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.
Share a Plate
Tee Up
Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks.
Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club.
Walk on the Wild Side
Capture the Moment
Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.
In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

WINTER SIP & STROLL RETURNS
IN FEBRUARY! EXPLORE THE FLAVORS OF THE HARBOR BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
T
he Gig Harbor Downtown Waterfront Alliance and The Rotary Club of Gig Harbor present Gig Harbor’s Winter Sip & Stroll, happening Saturday, February 12. From noon to 4pm, participants can stroll through the downtown waterfront and stop at participating businesses, where they’ll find an array of libations for sipping and small bites for tasting.
still tickets available the day of the event, they can be purchased online for $45. Ticket price includes a tasting glass, a map of the Stroll Stop locations and vendors, and 15 sip tickets for alcohol. If you would like to purchase your ticket, you can find the event online at GigHarborWaterfront.org, or search the event directly on EventBrite.com.
This popular tasting event returns to the delight of many, after being canceled in 2021. This tour along the waterfront allows ticket holders (must be 21 or older) to sample Northwest wines, brews, spirits and cider, alongside tasty small bites, at more than 20 businesses called “Stroll Stops.” And there’s no need to worry about inclement weather, as the Downtown Waterfront Alliance will once again provide complimentary transportation throughout the waterfront, making it that much easier to visit all of the Stroll Stops.
There will be additional sip tickets available for a small fee at the registration desk at the check-in location, which can be found at 3110 Judson Street (at the former 7 Seas Brewing location).
Tickets usually sell out in advance, so get yours today! Ticket price, which is $35 now through February 6, increases to $40 February 7 through 11 (if tickets are still available). In the case that there are
