Creating Comfort This Winter IDEAS TO WARM UP YOUR HOME AND SPIRITS

BY DEANN HAMMER, BROADWAY DESIGN | PHOTOS COURTESY OF BRETT WAYNE PHOTOGRAPHY

O

h baby, it’s cold outside is an understatement as we bring in the new year.

After the holidays are over, it is easy to start feeling a bit low as the sun disappears behind unrelenting cloud cover. The days are short, the ground is hard, and we all start hoping spring will come quickly. During these colder months, it is important to concentrate on selfcare. Here are some tips for creating a warm, comfortable space inside to bundle up and stay healthy until the spring bulbs emerge. Light As sunlight is scarce during winter months, we need to substitute it with interior lighting that is warm in color. Swap out cool LED lights for a warmer color, or go for a halogen bulb in areas where you spend most of your time.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Candlelight Candles create a soft glow and have a powerful relaxing effect on the mind. Battery operated candles on a timer are an easy and safe way to create a mood. Set the timer to start at dusk to keep the interior of your home feeling alive. Put them in the powder room, near the entry of your home and in your primary living spaces so you are constantly illuminated in a calm, glowing light. The larger candles with D batteries last the longest. Fire Clean your fireplace and make sure you have a nice stacked wood pile that is easily accessible to the house and is covered and dry. Keep a wood rack near the fireplace stocked daily. Houzz.com has some gorgeous modern models. If you have a gas fireplace, remove the front panel and clean the glass and screen so it gives the best light effect throughout the winter.

It is important to concentrate on self-care. Fresh Scents Homes become musty in the winter months. Buy a spray bottle with a fine mist and fill with a few drops of essential oils and water. I love sage, lemon and lavender combined. Spritz your house to your heart's content. Fresh flowers always liven up a space. Treat yourself! Visit your local florist or grocery store for affordable, fresh and stunning stems. Accessories Pull out a small heating blanket and leave it on low on your sofa. The electrical waves create an amazingly calming effect for both you and your pets. Faux fur blankets are also cozy. Refresh them regularly in the dryer on the sanitize setting. Removing the holiday decorations sometimes leaves our

homes feeling dreary. Freshen up your space with a few new pillows and cozy throw. Home Goods has many wonderful options. For very little money it will make you feel like your home is refreshed. Greenery Live plants generate oxygen, and we all could use more of that in the wintertime with the windows and doors shut tight. A few small house plants will do the trick. Ceramic containers are the best and will protect the floors from moisture. Water regularly and use a spray bottle with a fine mist to mist the leaves to protect them from drying out with your heater on full time. If you have the room for a fiddle leaf fig tree or a messy, temperamental ficus in a large pot, Watson’s in Puyallup has a nice selection. So bundle up tight and enjoy this winter with your friends and family!

A Radical “Letting Go” In The New Year FORGIVING IN YOUR DIVORCE … WITHOUT FORGETTING?

I

By Felicia Soleil, Attorney/Mediator

t’s a new year, and that usually brings with it setting new goals, planning to acquire something like a new house or a new car, implementing strategies for making more money, or increasing your family. Likewise, resolutions can include things to have less of, like losing weight, paying off debt or downsizing a household. In addition to resolutions focused on the tangible and measurable, what about including goals for the new year focused on emotions and feelings? More specifically, what about including goals focused on what you can release? Ask yourself, “What no longer serves me moving into the new year that I can let go of now?” If the answer to that question involves transitioning out of a major relationship in your life, such as with a spouse or life-partner, you know how difficult the year ahead may feel for both of you. Or perhaps the previous year involved your breakup and you are finding it difficult to feel good about starting the new year with a fresh outlook. What is this nagging feeling inside that hinders your ability to move on? In my almost 30 years as a family law attorney and divorce mediator, I find the difficulty with both moving ahead and closure frequently involves the inability to forgive an intimate partner’s actions, emotions or behaviors that either tore them away from you or laid the groundwork for you to initiate the separation yourself. What can it feel like if you include in your New Year’s resolutions the gift of letting go through forgiveness? We often think of forgiveness in terms of accepting someone’s apology, which also sometimes implies the request, “Can we forget this ever happened?” But what if the forgiveness can begin with you, for your benefit? And does the other person even need to know about it? And what if you simply can’t entertain the notion of sweeping the offending

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

experiences under the rug in an act of “forgetting”? Is there a different approach that allows us to forgive so we don’t continue to drag around the chains of blame and resentment? What does it really mean to forgive, even if you don’t want to forget? Anne Lamott defines forgiveness as “giving up all hopes of having had a better past.” I’ve heard this described as “a radical letting go,” if you will. C.S. Lewis said, “Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” How about trying this one, courtesy of renowned California mediator and conflict expert Kenneth Cloke: “Forgiveness is releasing yourself from the burdens of your own false expectations.” Crucial steps to doing this work—and it’s hard work—turn forgiveness on its head by asking you to try the following: • Identify the reasons why you should not forgive the other person, or yourself, and identify the expectations that were not met. • Choose to release yourself from each of those reasons and expectations. • And identify what it is going to cost you to hold onto them if you don’t. Begin the new year with new perspectives on allowing forgiveness, and you may find this your best year yet. Felicia Soleil is a family law attorney and mediator. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning for them and their families so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential.

DON’T LET YOUR HOME’S PIPES FREEZE? Ways you can be proactive now to eliminate problems later By Nicole Betcher, ServPro Gig Harbor/North Tacoma

A

s we come into colder winter temperatures, we are all at risk of our pipes freezing, and that can lead to pipes bursting. We have suggestions if you find that your pipes may be frozen and list of suggestions on preventing pipes from freezing.

THE CASCADE COMMITMENT GENERATIONS OF TRUSTED CARE.

One of the first signs that you have a problem, and even possibly a frozen pipe, is no running water coming out of your faucets when you attempt to turn it on. If this does happen, check to see that your home’s water supply is still turned on and that there are no obvious leaks anywhere. If your search concludes that your pipes are more than likely frozen, but not yet burst, we recommend calling your local plumber to help thaw your pipes. This is a good path for those who are unsure if they can safely thaw pipes themselves, are unaware of where the frozen pipes are located or can’t access the area of the house where the pipes are frozen. But we also want to help prevent frozen pipes, so be proactive and follow these recommendations: • Make sure all pipes that are exposed to the extreme temperatures are drained. This includes, but not limited to, swimming pool and exterior sprinkler system supply lines. • Disconnect any hoses from the exterior of your house. Drain the hoses and store them in the garage.

Contact Us Today!

• Insulate the area around light fixtures, vents and exterior faucets. This helps prevent freezing temperatures from gaining access to your home.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

26

• Open cabinet doors that have plumbing running in them. This helps the warm air to circulate around the pipes, keeping them warm. • Allow your faucets to drip cold water on the coldest days. The movement will make it harder for the water to freeze inside the pipes. • Never let your thermostat fall below 55 degrees Fahrenheit in your house. Whether night or day, make sure that your home’s temperature never dips below freezing. This is one of the leading causes of frozen pipes, as people do not want to pay for heating their homes when they are not at home. But, turning your heater off could lead to a risky game of frozen pipe roulette. • Check all exterior seals on windows, doors, garage doors, etc., and complete any necessary repairs to make sure no heat is escaping your house. Frozen water pipes and the damage they can cause are a serious risk for people in areas where the temperatures dip below freezing, especially for an extended time period. With the holidays out of the way, now is an inconvenient time for there to be a burst pipe or added expense that isn’t planned or budgeted for. Unfortunately, that is when these things tend to happen. So, be sure to take some time to walk the perimeter of your home and look at and investigate your pipes to prevent what could happen. We know that, living in the Northwest, our weather is not the most predictable; the next freeze can be anytime.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH By Colin Anderson

Debra Kaiser Leadership Teacher, Goodman Middle School

S

tudents roaming the halls of Goodman Middle School have almost certainly had interactions with Debra Kaiser. Our January Teacher of the Month has been teaching leadership classes to sixth, seventh and eighth graders for the past 21 years. These include beginning and advanced leadership, service leadership and community leadership.

One of her favorite aspects of class is seeing the amount of care her young students put toward those in their community who are struggling, whether that be through food and clothing drives or animal adoption programs, she is always impressed. “To observe students develop the qualities of empathy, caring and compassion and then put those traits into action to help others gives me confidence that the future of the world is resting in the hands of these,” said Debra.

Many years ago, Debra said she stumbled upon a quote that outlines her philosophy on teaching "IT GIVES ME SO as it also reminded her of how she was taught by her MUCH JOY TO own mother:

t’s winter in the harbor, and though the holidays have past, that doesn’t mean there still isn’t excitement to be had and new things to discover.

Into The Night is held October through March, as water visibility is the best in the colder months, with less sunlight to fuel the growth of plankton, which clouds the water, according to Rachel.

Mark your calendars for the first Saturday of January, February and March, as Harbor WildWatch holds its Pier Into The Night Live Dive at Jerisich Dock.

Attending a dive is easy. Just show up! There is plenty of room on the dock, and the screen is large, with the live stream projected for all to see.

“Most people in this community don’t have a good idea of what kinds of wildlife live in our waters. Though there are plenty of people in the community that have waterfront property or who spend time at the shore, it’s not often we come across someone who has a good familiarity with all the amazing animals that live here,” says Rachel Easton, education director for Harbor WildWatch. “We like to think of our programs as ‘an introduction to your aquatic neighbors.’”

“Each dive is unique; we never know what we will encounter,” smiles Rachel. “Maybe something as big as a harbor seal or a school of squid, or a feisty crab or even a shark might swim into view. There is no predicting what will show up. Attending one of these programs is a great way to get familiar with some of the amazing animals who live here, as well as hear from the HWW staff how to protect this vital habitat and its inhabitants.”

Harbor WildWatch’s Live Dive program is an easy way for children and adults, locals or visitors, who are curious about the underwater world, to see what’s down in the waters without getting wet (except for when it’s raining of course). Described as a virtual SCUBA dive, Pier

Harbor WildWatch is a 501(c)3 organization, and donations are greatly appreciated. The suggested donation is $2 per person. Harbor WildWatch hosts other events throughout the year, which can be found on their website, HarborWildWatch.org.

T

he Greater Gig Harbor Foundation is a boots-on-the-ground, hands-in-the dirt sort of community foundation. This is both a literal statement (the foundation donates a large majority of its funds toward parks and environment) and a figurative one. Along with being a foundation that writes checks (provides community grants), the community foundation implements programs according to community need. these, you can imagine the variety of events that have been sponsored over the past four years!

Community Spirit Grants are a wonderful example of the foundation’s commitment to directly engage with their community. The grants were started four years ago by an anonymous donor, who hoped to bring people-powered ideas to life, sparking positive community initiatives and involvement. The parameters for recreational events that receive the grants are simple: community partnerships, volunteer involvement and fun. With parameters as broad as

The greater portion of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s funds are allocated into programs that continue to illustrate their core values. Under education there are four grant programs: Students of Distinction Grants, Stewardship Grants, Gateway Grants, and the Coach Joel Wingard Grants. These grants are awarded to students showing exemplary scholarship, experiencing a lack of access to programs due to finances, adults who need further training to enter the workforce, or showing aptitude in certain

Applicants for this year’s Spirit Grants applied with the aim to fulfill one of the five core values held by the foundation: arts and culture, education, parks and environment, recreation, and social capital. These five cores are the guiding principles behind the different grant programs to which the foundation allots yearly donations. The Community Spirit Grants are just one of seven such programs and, as large as these grants may seem, are only a small portion of the yearly donations.

sports. Fulfilling the parks and environment core value is the Lu Winsor Grant. Funds from these grants are given to local programs that support parks and environmental care in the memory of Lu Winsor (a former park ranger and community leader). There’s also the Community Recreation Fund that fulfills the core value of recreation; funds are given to community organizations that facilitate positive change in recreation catering to youth. Lastly there is Community Harvest, which fulfills the social capital core value of the foundation. Community Harvest is focused squarely on addressing hunger across the community. Food and funds are raised to provide wholesome, healthy meals to low-income families in need around the holidays and throughout the year. The Greater Gig Harbor Foundation gives and gives, its umbrella for grants covering a vast portion of community activities. Because the foundation is an organization that hears its people with its “boots on the ground,” the community allotments and grants continue to grow to encompass community need. Activities like bike rides, Fourth of July events, the purchase of large pieces of land for the park district, and boundless playgrounds (the first in all of the PNW). Contributions over the years have been, and continue to be, allocated toward programs like the YMCA’s Camp Seymour, the Humane Society’s Scoop the Poop project, Basket Brigade, and Harbor WildWatch’s Get Your Feet Wet. More recently the foundation accepted the community’s new senior center under its umbrella and is working to increase activities available to our aging citizens.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

The width and breadth of the foundation is felt by our disabled children to those in school. From our youngest to our oldest. From our hungry to our full. From all over the community, the contributions of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation are personal. Kept alive and vital by its volunteers and many community engagements. However, I don’t think it is an exaggeration to pinpoint the Community Spirit Grants as the recognizable face of all eight of the grant programs. Perhaps it’s because the grant sponsors activities that bring us together, or maybe it’s because it’s fun. Whatever the reason, this year’s activities are sure to be a blast! This year's winners, announced at the end of December, are: the Key Peninsula Historical Society, Key Peninsula Parks, Peninsula Early Learning Coalition, and the Rattle Dem Bones community event. The Key Peninsula Historical Society plans to hold its annual STREAM night, where students are taught the history behind the valentine and given an opportunity to make a vintage one of their own. Key Peninsula Parks will use its funds for its annual Fourth of July hot dog social, which is held on July 4 from 11am to 2pm and is free to the community. Peninsula Early Learning Coalition will host an Early Learning Jamboree and Kindergarten Fair this January. Lastly, the Rattle Dem Bones community event is vastly becoming a favorite around Halloween, where the whole community is invited to ride their bikes from one side of the peninsula to the other. Awards are given to the best costume! However you decide to get out into the community this year, there’s enough going on that I’m sure we can’t help but run into each other soon! See you there, Gig Harbor!

ill Wambold has been a familiar face at Harbor Fit Studio, where she’s enjoyed participating in their various class offerings. Over the years, she recognized the immense potential of this “hidden gem” along the Downtown Gig Harbor waterfront. So, when the opportunity presented itself, Jill purchased the business. Today she is the proud owner of Harbor Fit Studio. “I have always been incredibly focused on health and fitness. Working at the big community fitness center on the hill as well as in small intimate locations, I knew that when I had the chance to buy Harbor Fit that this was the perfect spot for me,” says Jill. What makes Harbor Fit Studio unique compared to other similar establishments in the harbor is the intimate class size offerings paired with the incredible location—on the water with an amazing view of Mount Rainier, birds and wildlife that will keep you coming back. Whether it’s cycling, yoga, barre or Strong by Zumba, class sizes consistently stay around a dozen members or so, which provides a more personal and engaging experience for all in attendance.

Oh, and you can’t forget the view!”

Unlike many other fitness facilities, at Harbor Fit Studio, there is no requirement to sign up and be locked in for a year at a time or to become a member. “It’s a ton of fun and hard work, but I am enjoying every minute of it,” she smiles. “I couldn’t do this without my amazing instructors and the support of my husband and family! From website design to bike repair to the best food provided at events (my husband) and fun stories to share about life, they have given me the support to jump in with both feet and have a blast.”

GIG HARBOR IN FOCUS 2020

GIG HARBOR REAL ESTATE OUTLOOK BY SANDY JONES

T

he Gig Harbor area has had several years of above average economic and home price growth, as well as local employment growth due to expansion in our area. However, we have also had low home inventory during this time. As I write this article during the fourth quarter of 2019, we are still experiencing a seller’s market, multiple-offer situations, high buyer demand and low mortgage rates. Year in Review 2019 mid-fourth quarter housing statistics for Gig Harbor, Fox Island and the Key Peninsula show home sales were down 16 percent due to

low inventory; however, home sale prices were up 6.1 percent year-to-date, with a median sales price of $520,000. That is $30,000 higher than the previous year’s median sales price. The average number of days it took to sell a home in 2019 was 56 days, which was only 10 days more than in 2018.

months of inventory available based on closed sales, and a seller’s market is when there are less than three months of inventory available. A neutral market is between three and six months of inventory based on closed sales. Based on the above statistics, the Gig Harbor area is now in a seller’s market.

Currently, the absorption rate for our area is 2.3 months. Absorption rate provides insight on the rate at which houses are selling. It is the rate at which available homes are sold in a certain area during a given time and is calculated by dividing the average number of sales per month by the total number of available homes in that area.

Market Forecast

A buyer’s market is when there are more than six

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

36

While we don’t have a crystal ball, we do have Windermere Real Estate's chief economist, Matthew Gardner, to provide valuable insight on the real estate forecast for this area. Although his 2020 Market Forecast Report had not yet been published at the time this article was written, Gardner says he “expects home prices

to continue appreciating as we move through 2020, but the pace of growth will continue to slow.” Based on the 2019 housing market and record low interest rates, if these trends continue, our housing market will continue to experience solid growth. Affordability issues in Seattle and the Eastside are driving buyers further out from these population centers. This is leading to a rise in population in areas such as Gig Harbor, Key Peninsula and Fox Island and resulting in above-average price growth. Gardner also “expects to see a significant increase in residents between 25 and 44 years of age as well as over 65” in the Gig Harbor area.

This rise in population can, in part, be attributed to our beautiful surroundings, our amazing community, as well as the reputation of our topnotch schools. Gig Harbor was recently ranked in the top four cities in the nation to retire as well as the No. 1 place to retire in Washington state. Mortgage Outlook According to loan officer Debbie Mishko with American Pacific Mortgage, “The Gross Domestic Product is actually flat-to-good, which is why the Fed recently cut rates three times, resulting in a positive yield curve causing rates to move up from their lows of a few months back. Furthermore, we do not expect

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

37

the Fed to cut rates again anytime soon as the economy is plugging along at a very decent clip, unemployment is still very low, whereby rates are trending up as 2019 comes to a close. Rising mortgage rates are not necessarily bad for the housing market, as a healthy, vibrant economy is generally better for the housing market, as compared to low interest rates and a slow economy or even a recession. With that said, rates are still very low, and even though they have moved up slightly and may actually continue to move up minimally, the long-term prognosis is a potential slowing of the economy. If this happens, we could see a decline in interest rates and a slowing of the economy in 2020.”

First Time Buyers There are a variety of options in our marketplace for first-time buyers. Many potential buyers are confused about required down payment amounts and purchasing options, causing them to stall their home search. We always encourage a potential first-time buyer to consult with a mortgage broker to see if the timing is right for them to make a move into their first home. They are often surprised that now is a good time for them to buy. Home Equity The National Association of Realtors statistics show that homeowners are staying in their homes longer than in the past, and oftentimes remodeling rather than relocating, thereby paying off their mortgages and increasing their home equity. Utilizing the equity in your home to purchase a second home is an excellent investment option while interest rates are still low. With the steady growth of home values in our area, many Gig Harbor homeowners have no idea how much equity they currently have in their home. Your real estate broker can prepare a market analysis for you to give you an idea of your financial position and ideas on how to leverage that equity. Changes to Washington State Real Estate Excise Tax Starting in January 2020, owners of residential real estate will see some significant changes in their Real Estate Excise Tax (REET) obligations when they decide to sell, due to the passage of Senate Bill 5998. As it stands today, excise taxes are calculated at a flat rate of 1.28 percent, with municipalities adding their own tax on top of the state tax. The current excise tax for home sellers in Gig Harbor is 1.78 percent. The newly passed legislation changes this to a tiered system as follows: • 1.1 percent if the selling price is equal to or less than $500,000 (1.6 percent total*)

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

• 1.28 percent on the portion of the selling price that is greater than $500,000 but equal to or less than $1,500,000 (1.78 percent total*) • 2.75 percent on the portion of the selling price that is greater than $1.5 million but equal to or less than $3 million (3.25 percent total*) • 3 percent on the portion of the selling price that is greater than $3 million (3.5 percent total*) In general, most home sellers will not be adversely affected by this change, as homes priced at or below $1.5 million will benefit from a tax cut; the increases primarily impact high-end home sellers. Given current home values in Gig Harbor, a majority of home sellers are expected to receive a tax cut on the sale of residential real estate in our area. In Closing 2019 was an extraordinary year for our Gig Harbor real estate market, and as we ring in the new year, we look forward to a strong start in 2020! Clearly many variables will impact our local real estate market in 2020, including upcoming elections and the economy. However, I hope this Gig Harbor current housing market overview will help you in making betterinformed real estate decisions. For further questions or for information about our housing market, you can contact Sandy Jones, Windermere Real Estate Gig Harbor/Downtown, at sandyjones@windermere.com or 253.514.1988.

MAEVE GRIFFIN Peninsula High School

S

enior Maeve Griffin is someone who gives 100 percent effort, no matter what. This is evident from both her efforts on the volleyball court and in the classroom. Maeve carries a 4.0 GPA while taking a challenging schedule of Advanced Placement classes. She was selected to the National Honor Society both her junior and senior years. “One of the biggest challenges in the sport of volleyball for me has been finding the right balance of time between school and sports,” she said. As far as volleyball players go, Maeve is an area standout. Her leadership skills earned her the title of captain while only a sophomore, a distinction she’s carried through her junior and senior seasons. Maeve was named 1st Team All-League (2017), Peninsula’s Offensive Player of the Year (2017), Peninsula’s Defensive Player of the Year (2018), League MVP (2018) and All-State Team (2018). 2019 awards will be

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

handed out once the state tournament is completed, and we’ll most likely see Maeve honored again. She says she enjoys volleyball for the camaraderie and competition. “My favorite thing about volleyball is the people and friendships that it has brought me and the intense competition that each game brings,” said Maeve. When her time at Peninsula High School comes to a close this spring, Maeve will be traveling quite a way for the next chapter in her life. She will be attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham to play for the school’s beach volleyball team. She plans to study biomedical engineering. Focus, drive and maximum effort in everything she does have lead to many accomplishments for this high school senior. Maeve’s efforts will most certainly make her successful at the next level both in the classroom and on the beach!

THE MONTH

ZACHARY TOGLIA Gig Harbor High School

F

or junior Zachary Toglia, juggling sports and academics can be a real challenge, but Zachary puts forth the same effort whether in practice, competition, the classroom or homework. “I want to do the best I can in everything that I do, and sports takes a lot of time out of my day to get to work on my classroom assignments. But, I make sure that I get everything done well and on time, because I believe how you perform in the classroom reflects how you play on the field/court,” he explained. Zachary’s commitment to hard work is evident in what he’s already accomplished. His GPA is just a couple ticks under a 4.0 while taking Advanced Placement classes. He is now in his third year playing on the varsity basketball team and earned 2nd Team All-League in the SSC Conference at the end of his sophomore year. Zachary suited up for the varsity baseball team his sophomore year, earning 1st Team All-League, a thirdplace finish in the State Tournament and the Silver Slugger award. He plans on honing his baseball skills again this spring as well.

Zachary plans on attending a four-year university and will be working hard to impress schools enough to offer him a baseball scholarship. Future careers might be something either in the business world or engineering. “I have always been interested in the math and science involved in order to become an engineer, as well as the concepts in the business field,” he explained.

ll a m S t r o p p Su um l A l Loca u sines s B d e n Ow

But there is still plenty of this season left, an upcoming baseball season on the horizon and his entire senior year yet to play out. For now, Zachary says he is continuing to enjoy each moment. “I just love the chance to compete at a high level with all of my closest friends and really grow closer together into a family.” While competing against some of the best athletes in the region, Zachary says he’s learned to focus on what he can control and to not get caught up in the things he can’t. “A bad call from a ref or the outcome of a game cannot be controlled, but the things that you can control such as your work ethic, time management and sportsmanship is what can help you progress into a better player and a better person,” he said.

MASTER CLASS GIG HARBOR PADDLER IN A CLASS OF HER OWN BY COLIN ANDERSON

T

he Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing team is nationally renowned. Each year, the team sends members to national and international events, and championships and medals always seem to come home with them. While the youth and adult levels, individuals and teams continue to dominate, it’s in the Master’s Class that you find one of the more incredible stories on this team.

Bee developed a spinal condition and after meeting with surgeons was informed that surgery would do her no good and physical therapy would be the only route. “I thought to myself, I would much rather do a sport than go to a clinic,” Bee recalled. About the same time, Bee was taking her granddaughter to paddling practice on Lake Washington. She asked the coach if she could join the team, and he happily obliged. Like anyone learning a new skill, paddling in open water was a challenge for Bee. “They were all so fast. I would stick to the shoreline because it would eventually get dark and someone would have to circle back and come show me the way in,” she said.

It’s the offseason, so Bee Dietz is in the gym three times a week training for the upcoming race season, with her eyes set on another trip to nationals. Bee is a multiple medal winner in the Master’s Class Sprint Kayak series despite not picking up the sport until 2013—and at the age of 75. Having just celebrated her 83rd birthday, Bee is really in a class of her own, often competing against paddlers 30 to 40 years younger than she. Having lived an adventurous life alongside her husband Bob (88), Bee found paddling to be a way to keep active, compete, and also be therapeutic.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

While one might think that paddling a sprint kayak would only inflame her spinal condition, a month in Bee was already improved without ever having to step into a clinic. “By the end of the month my back was better, the pain had dissipated, and I felt better,” she said.

Bee found paddling to be therapeutic PHOTO BY CATHY KASPERBAUER

BEE IS REALLY IN A CLASS OF HER OWN, OFTEN COMPETING AGAINST PADDLERS 30 TO 40 YEARS YOUNGER THAN SHE. The Dietzs have lived in Western Washington for more than 30 years. They moved here from New Jersey for the specific reason of joining the Seattle Mountaineers Backcountry ski club. The couple taught people how to telemark ski and traverse the backcountry of the Cascades. While they don’t hit the backcountry any longer, last winter they were still cruising the slopes of Snoqualmie Pass and cross-country skiing. This winter they plan on snowshoeing as well as they continue to enjoy the outdoor passions that lead them West in the first place. The Dietzs decided to make Gig Harbor their new home in 2016, and it was again a sport that drove the move. “We moved to Gig Harbor so I could join the team here; that’s absolutely the reason,” laughed Bee. “Bob thought it was crazy to be doing this kind of retirement plan, but we both love it here.” Bee joined the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team in 2016 and has been competing ever since. Locally, she often competes against

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

women of all ages, and at regional and national events the Master’s Class usually starts at age 40 or 45. Outside the challenge of facing off with competitors sometimes half her age, Bee has been battling rheumatoid arthritis since her late 20s. She calls her hands “awful” but says the technique of paddling is such that she can still use them. Between visits to the gym and training on the water, Bee is definitely proud of her physique at 83. “Getting old, it’s wonderful to have strong muscles. I have great abs and biceps, and can’t tell you how nice that is,” she said proudly. As she prepares for the upcoming season, Bee doesn’t have any set goals. “I just want to go out and paddle as fast as I can for as long as I can and go like hell while I’m doing it,” she laughed. Bee will be competing both as an individual and as a team in a K2 boat with fellow Master 60-yearold Heidi Rowntree. In the tandem event, the person in the front sets the pace and the person in the back paddles strong, according to Bee. They have their eyes set on medaling at national’s this July. Bee will also be doing distance events of 5k and a few up to 10k. While still immensely active for their age, Bee and Bob say they’ve reached a point to know what they can do safely. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are still in play, but it’s likely they’ve taken their last downhill runs. “We’re so lucky that Bob and I have enjoyed the same

Chris brings 16 year of Pierce County family law experience, including 13 years spent working for a larger firm. He is joined by paralegal Tracie Romeo, who brings decades of experience in the area of family law. Tracie is dedicated to the clients they serve and the work they do at the law practice. “She does so much for the business, and we simply could not exist without her support and commitment,” says Chris. Chris’ wife Kelli Maharry has also been instrumental in the creation and success of Harbor Family Law. As the firm’s operations and marketing manager, Kelli has worked tirelessly getting their systems in place to make sure the practice functions efficiently to best serve their clients and getting the word out about the business’ opening. “She wears many hats for the business, and I never could have got our business off the ground without her,” affirms Chris. From simple uncontested cases to highly litigious multimillion-dollar cases, Chris

brings skill and dedication to the job and has a reputation as both a strong advocate and a problem solver. “While I am willing to fight hard for my clients, I feel I have an obligation to never make matters worse, which can sometimes happen with an overly aggressive approach to a family law matter,” says Chris. “I take pride in being able to be versatile in my approach and tailor my practice to each individual case.” Family law legal services offered at Harbor Family Law include divorce, legal separation, child custody, visitation and parenting plans, child support, spousal support, rights of unmarried parents, parenting plan modifications, child support modifications, property and debt division, paternity matters, grandparent visitation, prenuptial agreements, postnuptial agreements, domestic violence protection, domestic partnerships and committed intimate relationships, adoption and collaborative law. “Most often, the people who need my help are going through one of the most difficult times of their life. This is a heavy burden and one I do not take lightly,” states Chris. “People trust me to help them when they are at their most vulnerable. To be able to help guide people through the process and put them in the best position possible to move forward in their lives is very rewarding. I take pride in being able to guide people through these tough times, giving them a sense of calm and the knowledge that a better tomorrow is ahead.”

Having grown up in Port Orchard, Chris attended college at Western Washington University in Bellingham, followed by law school at Seattle University, after which he began his law career in Tacoma. He continued to live in Seattle until meeting his wife Kelli and deciding to start a family. “My wife and I both have family in Gig Harbor, so when we decided to start our own family, moving back to the peninsula was an easy decision,” says Chris. “We love Gig Harbor and feel so lucky to get to raise our children in such a wonderful community.” Chris sits on the Advisory Council at the Tom Taylor YMCA and says he is honored to support their mission. “They do so much for our community and the children of Gig Harbor, and I am honored to be able to help that cause.” Kelli sits on the Board of the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation’s Curious By Nature School, which their children attend. Kelli is proud to support the one-of-a-kind program, which brings kids closer to nature in a way that supports their discovery of the world we live in. The GGHF is instrumental at closing the early childhood learning gap in our community by providing scholarships and grants to those who would not otherwise be able to provide their children with a whole-child early learning environment. If you are experiencing a difficult situation and are looking for a local family law firm to help guide you to a successful solution, Harbor Family Law is here to help.

FINANCIAL WELLNESS AND YOUR OVERALL HEALTH The Wellness Wheel

By Scot Fleshman, ARNP, FNP - BC, Owner, Rainier Family Medicine

I

n this month’s segment on the Wellness Wheel, we discuss how financial health can impact overall wellness. The Wellness Wheel is the idea that a person’s health is comprised of multiple facets that each play a crucial role in overall wellness.

It also includes planning for retirement, establishing a college fund and making other decisions for a sound financial future. There are many aspects to financial health. A financially healthy individual educates themselves on the risks and benefits of financial situations, from the basic how to balance a checkbook to the more advanced financial skills like balancing an investment portfolio and everything in between. Financial wellness doesn’t necessarily mean having a lot of money. It can mean knowing how to manage what you have to work with.

Given the time of year, I thought it would be appropriate, and hopefully helpful, to examine financial health this month. It may seem funny to include financial well-being into the Wellness Wheel. After all, what does money have to do with a person’s health? It turns out there is a strong correlation between money and wellness. It would be easy to focus on what role money plays on access to health care. While we will dive into this a bit, we will also focus on a few of the less obvious ways that financial wellness affects our overall health.

If a person is not financially healthy, it can add a level of challenge to many aspects of life. We may not be able to contribute to our preferred religious institutions, participate actively in our community events, be as physically active or achieve our intellectual goals. The elephant in the room is access to physical and mental health care. It is true no matter how we look at it— the better our financial health, the more options we have when seeking

Financial wellness involves short- and long-term financial goals; being able to pay your bills today, pay off debts and repay student loans, for example.

H E A LT H Y T I P

IT'S A NEW YEAR! What better time than now to start on a new you. No matter your goal, write it down and say it out loud every day. The more you see it, the more you'll believe in it and ultimately achieve it!

health care. This can mean increasing our access to better health insurance or being able to pay medical bills when we obtain service. Your financial health plays a significant role in increasing your access to more options in general. Wellness where finances are concerned certainly impacts our overall health in many ways, but the converse is also true. Illness in the financial aspect of health can play a significant role in our general wellness. Money is often a significant source of stress, which affects other aspects of our health, not least of all, our mental and physical health. Decreased financial wellness is linked to various factors contributing to overall diminished health. For example, access to health care is often limited or entirely unavailable in lower socioeconomic areas. This includes transportation to health-care facilities and to jobs that pay for quality medical insurance. Additionally, persons in lower income areas often have a lower health education level than those in wealthier communities. Like other aspects of socioeconomic disparities, health education is often a generational problem. Individuals cannot teach their children what they, themselves, are unaware of.

The health-care system is difficult to navigate— even for those with intimate knowledge of the system. It is nearly impossible for individuals lacking a compass in their journey to obtain health-care resources amongst a myriad of convoluted directions and roadblocks. A financially unhealthy individual is often faced with barriers when locating affordable resources, as well as advocating for themselves in a very difficult environment. Moreover, for various reasons, persons with impaired financial wellness are more likely to take part in risky activities, such as use of alcohol and tobacco products, further complicating their physical and mental health statuses. Combine these factors with housing crises, ever-increasing cost of living and other daily struggles, and it becomes easy to see the major influence that financial wellness plays on the health of the individual. From being able to afford healthy nutrition options to health insurance and other healthcare costs to the peace of mind that economic stability affords, financial health is a vital component of our overall health. Like all the pieces of the wellness wheel, financial wellness is interdependent on each other section of our overall wellness. Therefore, we must not forget to nurture this aspect of our health, just as we do the others.

WHEN MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS T E L L YO U T O “ L I V E W I T H I T ” … Should you? By Mariel C. Kraus, OTR/L

I

n my lifetime, I have known people who came down with a condition that was hard to understand or treat effectively, and I have joined their ranks more than once. In the absence of answers, we are told, “You will have to live with it and take medications to manage the symptoms as best you can.” It takes a certain type of person to respond to that advice with defiance and resolve to find a solution or an advocate. As a clinician and strong patient advocate, I say, “Don’t give up or give in!” There are many ways to solve a problem, and in my opinion, functional medicine is the most logical approach to wellness because it does not address the problem with pharmacology as the first approach. Functional medicine recognizes that a person is made up of more than the part of their body that is showing dysfunction and feeling pain. Science is now beginning to understand the gutbrain connection and that food can either make us ill or heal us. The human body has basic needs: clean air, water and food; sunlight, physical activity, mental stimulation, healthy sleep cycle and protection from exposure to harsh weather. When any of these needs are not met or purposely denied, we repress or decrease wholeness, then disease or dysfunction is the outcome. The human body is only as resilient as the brain that controls it. Program it for self-healing and seek out health-care professionals who are problem solvers, door openers and success facilitators. There are health-care professionals for

every type of patient. Everyone must define what type they are and seek their health-care match. There are people who seek out treatments that will “fix” them without having to put effort into the process. There are people who will accept a poor prognosis and give up feeling powerless. Then, there are people who refuse to accept defeat and will look for alternative therapies, “experimental” and non-traditional treatments to defy the odds.

Specialized Physical Therapies designed for Treating the

Whole Person in Body, Home & Community!

Post-Concussion Syndrome Parkinson’s Comprehensive Therapies Automobile Injuries Balance & Vertigo

At Integrative, most of our patients have tried traditional therapies that did not give them longterm solutions or relief. Many times, they have already exhausted their benefits but refuse to “live with it”—such as Meniere’s disease, frozen shoulders, neck kyphosis (hump) and pain, poor balance, post-concussion conditions, light sensitivity and visual processing disorders, etc. These conditions are not insurmountable when a clinician takes time to listen, can visualize the dysfunction and cares to solve the problem as a wellness partner. January is a new start and the right time to resolve conditions that have interfered with living your best life. If you are the type of person who does not like being told to “live with it” and like being proactive, don’t wait to integrate your life. Solutions are possible with occupational therapists because we are trained to be functional clinicians. You have a choice in where you go for therapy. Choose to partner with an experienced and board-registered occupational therapist who treats the whole person and is specialized in treating your condition.

ARE YOU CHEATING SLEEP? WHY DO WE NEED SO MUCH SLEEP? BY DR. RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS, UPTOWN DENTAL & WELLNESS CENTER

H

onestly, think about what you could accomplish if you didn’t need to take time to eat or sleep! When I was in college, a young colleague said, “I only have enough time for one meal a day! Where do you expect me to get time to eat more?” I thought, “Wow! Eating is pretty important!” All that aside, he was quite slim. I didn’t ask him about his possible snacking habits. Hey, did you know that snacking can lead to more cavities? But let’s get back to the topic of sleep and why sleep, or lack of it, might be of concern to your dentist. Did you know that if you snore, you can be more prone to gum disease? Sleeping well is rejuvenating. It’s when your body heals and repairs itself. If you have periodontal disease (disease of the gum and bone around your teeth), you can’t heal well from the inflammation. You’re also more prone to an increase in cavities. Dry mouth, stickier plaque, more cavities! Do you ever wake up at night with a dry mouth? As mammals, we live and die based on circadian rhythms. Our body is set to sleep and wake on a 24-hour cycle. The timing is controlled by the brain. You can fight it, but we need sleep to survive. Sadly, there have been many articles in the news regarding abnormal behavior due to lack of sleep, which can include suicide, insanity and serious depressive behaviors. Did you know that if you live to be 90 years of age, you’d have slept 32 years of your life? Our sleep cycles change as we age. Younger

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

56

people need much more sleep. Older patients experience much lighter sleep, less REM sleep and tend to nap during the day. As dentists, we get concerned for patients who don’t sleep well due to other causes, not the circadian rhythm. When you relax at night, the tongue can fall back against the back of your throat. This can cause obstructive sleep apnea, affecting your oxygen intake at night. Why does this happen? • Age • Neck size • Fat deposition • Airway resistance syndrome • Size of the tongue • Shape of your palate and dental arch • Tonsils or adenoids • Genetics: family predisposition • Medication use • Menopause I personally don’t like being told that as I get older, menopause can affect my sleep. You probably also don’t want to know that your tongue can get fatter. Nothing stays the same: muscle tone, sagging throats. Really? What can you do? Throat lifts are external only. While they look good (and I’d do it too!), it won’t help you sleep. Men, you’ve always been at more risk for sleep apnea. Ask your physician about sleep if you’re feeling tired during the day or if your spouse complains about his or her quality of sleep. Come into see me and visit our website at UptownDentalGigHarbor.com. You have options. We can refer you to a board-certified sleep physician, decrease cavities, improve gum/bone health and help you sleep better!

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE VS. DEMENTIA WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? BY ROBINA GAINES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OLYMPIC ALZHEIMER’S RESIDENCE

D

id you know the word dementia is not a disease but an umbrella term used to describe a group of symptoms caused by other conditions? Dementia is marked by the loss of cognitive function including remembering, reasoning and thinking. This includes behavioral abilities that can interfere with everyday activities such as language skills, memory, visual perception, problem-solving and self-management. While dementia is more common as people grow older, it is not a normal part of aging.

Lewy body dementia is a term used to describe dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia. Lewy body dementia is a type of progressive dementia where Lewy body protein deposits form clumps inside the areas of the brain that control memory and movement. This causes neurons to work less effectively, also affecting the activity of certain brain chemicals, resulting in damage to the brain and a decline in ability. In addition to dementia symptoms and cognitive fluctuations, another symptom includes visual hallucinations.

The causes of dementia can vary depending on the types of brain changes that take place. There are over 400 types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. Other types of dementia include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal disorders. Additionally, it’s common for people to have mixed dementia, which is a combination of two or more types of dementia.

Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. If you or a loved on are experiencing memory loss, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. Early diagnosis can help determine if the symptoms are truly due to Alzheimer’s disease or something that might be a treatable condition. If there is a diagnosis by a medical professional, early detection may give you access to a treatment plan including clinical trials that may lessen the symptoms for a period.

Alzheimer’s disease accounts for between 60 and 80 percent of all dementia cases, and it is marked by a progression of three stages: early stage, middle stage and late stage as symptoms worsen over time. The most common early symptom is difficulty remembering newly learned information. This happens because Alzheimer’s disease typically begins in the part of the brain that affects learning. As the disease progresses, so does the severity of the symptoms that may include disorientation, mood or behavior changes, confusion about events and more serious memory loss, to name a few.

Vascular dementia is considered the second most common cause of dementia, accounting for 5 to 10 percent of cases. It is caused by conditions that reduce or block blood flow to various areas of the brain, depriving them of nutrients and oxygen. Symptoms are generally most obvious when they occur after a stroke that has caused vascular damage, or multiple small strokes that affect blood vessels and nerves deep in the brain. The symptoms include confusion, disorientation, trouble speaking or understanding speech, difficulty walking or poor balance. Experts believe both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia is underdiagnosed, even though it’s recognized as common.

FROM MODEL T

Exhibits continue to wow BY COLIN ANDERSON | PHOTOS COURTESY OF LEMAY-AMERICA'S CAR MUSEUM

I

f you’ve meandered through one of the many car shows of the Northwest, you’ve probably seen some pretty cool rides. It’s a great way to get up close to a piece of history. The common vehicles featured in most of these shows are mid ‘50s to late ‘70s Americanmade automobiles. Some shows have rules as to how old the car must be to be shown, what condition it is in or where it was made. While these shows can be a lot of fun, especially for those who grew up driving one of these muscle machines, being able to see a wider variety of automotive history is a more difficult thing to find. Lucky for us, North America’s largest continuous “car show” can be found right in our backyard. And if you’ve never been, you are sure in for a treat. LeMay - America’s Car Museum is a bucket-list trip for those serious about automotive history but also a great time for those who know little to nothing about vehicles of the past or even how a car works; and that’s the beauty of this place. “It’s truly multi-generational,” said Ashley Bice, National Strategic Initiatives Officer with America’s Automotive Trust, a nonprofit organization aimed at preserving America’s car heritage. “Everyone walks away with a great experience.” The ACM collection includes some 300 cars, trucks and motorcycles inside the 165,000-square-foot complex, with vehicles spanning more than a century. “It’s all about the celebration of America’s love affair with the automobile, not one particular vehicle or brand,” said Bice. The collection varies from some of the earliest models ever made to some of the newest in luxury, high speed or concept on the market today. The museum came to be when Harold and Nancy LeMay had amassed the largest privately owned collection of vehicles and memorabilia in the world. When asked about his collection, the late Harold LeMay said, “I don’t go for just the dollar value car. If it is unusual, I like it. So, I am kind of a maverick, since I am not a dyed-in-the-wool Chevy, Ford or Duesenberg man. I see it, I like it, I buy it.” After amassing such a large collection, and seeing the sheer enjoyment

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

of guests at their annual car show and open house at the couple’s homestead, the LeMays made the decision that instead of seeing their collection scattered and auctioned off to private owners, it would be better served as a piece of history that all could enjoy. After more than a decade of planning, grant writing, fundraising, ups and downs, and surviving the economic downtown, ground was broken in 2011, and the museum saw its doors open for good in June of 2012. Since then, thousands of visitors from all 50 states and 47 countries have passed through the doors to admire this truly one-of-a-kind collection. First-time visitors are amazed almost instantly as they walk through the doors. Most museums typically display only a small portion of their collections, as many of the rare artifacts are kept in storage and away from the public eye. Rather unique to LeMay - America’s Car Museum is that the collection is held in an “open air” setting. Vehicles that aren’t currently on display in one of the numerous exhibits are still open for easy public view in the center lower levels of the complex. While the LeMays are the primary donors to the museum, other cars, trucks, motorcycles and unique pieces of automotive history have come from many different sources. According to Bice, two-thirds of the vehicles on display come from private donors—not just from the area but across both oceans. “We had a 1941 Buick go to China for an exhibition and then back to the museum. Our 1927 La Salle that is currently on display competed in the 2011 Mille Miglia in Italy,” she said. It’s a unique opportunity for collectors as they have a safe place to display their car where thousands more people will get to see and experience it

than at a regional car show. It also helps the museum continually bring in new pieces of history to share as the exhibits rotate often and showcase different brands, eras and styles. “You don’t have to be a ‘car guy’ to enjoy this place, but if you are, there is definitely a lot of eye candy to enjoy,” said Bice. Getting the unique autos is often a two-way street. Sometimes the museum is made aware of a special car or vehicle that would make a great fit for an upcoming exhibit, making a request to the owner; and other times, the vehicle’s owner is made aware of the museum and wants to be part of sharing its history with others. The museum recently wrapped up displaying one of the more unique collections on the planet. While many donate a single vehicle or maybe a couple, Brown M. Maloney loaned LeMay 125 Honda motorcycles from multiple decades. Maloney was highlighted in the 2019 Master Collector’s Exhibit, which is reserved for “dedicated enthusiasts whose passion for cars knows no bounds.” A new Master Collector will be featured later this year. The collection at LeMay includes just about anything you can think of, along with several vehicles and artifacts you might not have known to exist. One exhibit might include the earliest Cadillac, Model Ts and Model As, and around the corner you’ll find a display of British-made automobiles. Muscle cars and family wagons, high-end ultra-fast sports cars and even the foot-powered “Flintmobile” from the 1994 Flintstones movie are on display for guests’ enjoyment. One of the more popular exhibits is Route 66, which includes a rotating interactive collection of cars and memorabilia to celebrate America’s iconic roadway. This exhibit is dedicated to the heyday of American

automobile travel and helps a younger generation see what a family road trip on this iconic highway looked like in the 1950s and ‘60s. First-time visitors should set aside some time to visit Lucky’s Garage to learn about Harold LeMay, his passion for automobiles, how he came to own so many and his decision to put them on display for all to enjoy. This is a permanent exhibit paying tribute to those who made it all possible. Though initially popular in the south, NASCAR’s following has grown not just nationwide but has spread to a worldwide audience. Two-hundred mile per hour super cars dominate the tracks today, but this sport got its humble beginning from southern moonshiners tuning engines for a few extra horsepower in order to avoid the law while running their illicit alcohol. In the Legends of Motorsports: The NASCAR story you’ll not only learn about how the sport began to blossom but see the evolution of race cars, many of which you’ll recognize from popular drivers throughout its history. If you want to take your racing experience up a notch, be sure to stop by the Speed Zone. Here you are strapped into a state-of-the-art CXC racing simulator so you can get the feel of track and slot car racing. One of the most exciting new exhibits at LeMay is Saleen: From the Heart of a Racer to America’s Supercar. The incredible display was unveiled this past fall with Steve Saleen in attendance. Visitors are treated to a unique display of Saleen’s rich automotive history spanning over four decades. You can enjoy a variety of historic vehicles on display, including his personal racing machines, early Saleen Mustangs, the Saleen S7 (considered America’s first supercar), and examples of the company’s new Saleen 1 mid-engine turbocharged sports car and recently unveiled Saleen 1 GT4 concept race car. Other exhibits include the opulent rides of the 1930s and a wing of all British-made autos. There is no shortage of vehicles to see, but there are also great opportunities to get hands on and interactive as well. “We have dedicated spaces for kids and families to really experience automobiles,” said Bice. These include the photo car where you can have your picture taken with a 1923 Buick touring car. There is also the Family Zone which has multiple interactive pieces for kids to explore. Here they can study how a car works by looking at an exposed chassis, build and race pinewood derby cars, get behind the wheel of a Mustang, and design their own car. Many school groups have come through the museum, and there are also family-focused programs as well as adult-only programs on the calendar. What’s truly amazing is the museum is run almost entirely on a volunteer basis. These folks handle everything from tour guides, greeters and manning various interactive

stations to monitoring the collections and doing general maintenance and upkeep on the collection. While many of the museum’s collection will likely never see outdoor roadways again, that isn’t to say you won’t soon see and hear some of them rumbling the streets of the Northwest. “Our Drive Home program takes vehicles from the collection and gets them out on the road driving from one point to another,” explained Bice. In fact, part of the collection will take a unique journey later this year. To recreate the iconic American road trip, vehicles from LeMay will be brought to California in late spring and driven across the country, eventually landing in Detroit for the American Auto Show in June. The cars will be making stops at famous points of interest and National Parks along the way. “We really want to keep the hobby alive, and

“We have dedicated spaces for kids and families to really experience automobiles.” this is a great opportunity to get people to see these cars up close, outside, and appreciate the history,” said Bice. While any time of year is a great time to visit, those wanting an even more unique experience will want to mark their calendars for the evening of March 13. Each year, the museum

hosts a yearly party called Drive the Blues Away. This year’s theme is “Viva Las Vegas.” Guests can still wander throughout the museum, but you’ll also be treated to food, drink and live music as you peruse the collection. Tickets will be going on sale soon for this exclusive event. When the weather turns brighter and warmer, you’ll find even more fun outside the museum walls with Cruise Ins and Drive-In movies featuring a 40-foot screen. Take a Spin will put you in a moving car, which could be anything from a Packard to a vintage fire truck. There is always something new to find at LeMay - America’s Car Museum. New visitors are astonished by the sheer scope of the place, while members continue to find new details they might have missed on previous visits. Nowhere else can you find a collection of such variety, all thanks to the incredible generosity of Harold and Nancy LeMay.

YOUR OWN HANDS HOME GYM ESSENTIALS FOR 2020 BY TAYLOR SHILLAM

T

he beginning of a new year is, for most of us, synonymous with a fresh start. It’s a symbolic hit of the “reset” button in areas of life like mindfulness, home improvement, education and, of course, physical fitness.

You’ve seen it happen year after year: January hits and gym memberships surge, with New Year’s resolutions driving the masses to revamp their fitness routines with full force. If fitness is on the forefront of your New Year's resolutions, but sweating your days away in a crowded gym is not, it might be time for a change of scenery. With the right equipment, your fitness goals can be reached within the comfort of your own home. Resistance bands - You can quite literally start small in terms of your home fitness equipment with resistance bands. They’re space-efficient and highly portable; for frequent travelers, the bands will pack easily into your suitcase, and for those working with limited space, they can be tucked in a drawer when not in use. The elastic bands add an element of dynamic strength training to a workout, with the additional level of challenge depending on the size and stiffness of the band. Smaller, thicker bands can be set around the knees and ankles during dynamic warmups and lower body work, while longer, looser bands can be used to

strengthen and stretch the upper body. The small bands provide a long list of opportunities to diversify your workouts. Jump rope - Don’t underestimate the power of the jump rope. The jump rope packs a huge cardiorespiratory punch in a small package, and all you need for an effective workout with one is the right amount of space. According to ACE Fitness, jumping rope can help improve your coordination, as it requires you to keep a cadence as you move. Creating intervals by alternating quicker cadences with slower cadences drives your body to work hard to adjust, maximizing your effort and burn in a shorter amount of time. This also encourages cognitive function as the communication between your brain, wrists and leg muscles keeps your entire body moving. A study by the Cooper Institute reported that 10 minutes of jumping rope can have the equivalent benefits of a 30-minute jog, and who wouldn’t want to make that trade? Suspension trainer/TRX bands - Suspension training is low impact, highly adjustable and allows you to build strength while perfecting posture simply by using your body weight. All you need is an anchor point with the TRX Home System, and nothing works the core muscles you didn’t know you had like this does. Using your body weight to balance and stabilize against the anchor point engages your deep core muscles every step of the way. You can plank, squat, lunge, row, even incorporate

yoga sequences into your TRX training, taking each to the next level as the support from the straps allows for increased intensity when you simply change your body angle. Find new workout inspiration in the TRX app, which releases new workouts regularly and is often included for one year with your purchase of the bands. Medicine ball - Revive your athleticism and demonstrate your power with the medicine ball. They can be thrown, caught and slammed, allowing for the explosive movements that will get the heart pumping and improve overall functional performance. Available in varying weights and sizes, you’ll have plenty of options—choose a weight that will undoubtedly make you notice the additional effort with each move but won’t compromise your form. You can add the medicine ball into almost any move, including cardio (hold and press it up in jumping jacks), core work (weighted V-ups and Russian twists) and dynamic strength (in a push-up, place one hand on the medicine ball as you push and engage the core). Have fun with it and play an adult fitness version of wall-ball or grab a partner for a strengthening game of catch. This lowimpact, high-power tool is a must. Dumbbells - It’s proven that strength training is the type of workout that continues burning the most calories long after the workout ends, due to the higher metabolism associated with increased muscle tone. However, you don’t need the big machines at the gym to build and tone muscle. Instead, invest in a pair of dumbbells. Dumbbells allow you to strengthen every part of the body, keep the muscles guessing and push past fitness plateaus with the hundreds of different exercises they make possible. Because they allow for a wider range of motion, they provide a deeper stretch to the muscle, more room for functional movement and the ability to isolate more specific muscles to reach your unique goals. Start with one pair that challenges you but allows you to work through your desired rep range with good form, then work up in weight from there. Sliders - Maybe you’ve never associated doing lunges with “gliding,” but it’s also likely you’ve never considered incorporating sliders into your fitness routine. These small discs add a whole new dimension to your workout, increasing intensity by adding an element of instability that instantly requires your core to work in sync with the rest of your body and stay engaged the entire time. Place them under your feet or hands to increase the work in body-weight moves like planks, mountain climbers and lunges, taking them to the next level for plank jacks, moving pikes and three-way side squats. You’ll immediately notice the extra pull in hard-to-target areas like the lower abs. The discs are budget friendly, compact and designed to work on both flooring and carpet, allowing you plenty of room to glide your way into total-body toning. Yoga mat - If you’ve ever practiced yoga regularly, you know it doesn’t take long to notice the benefits. It’s a long list including enhanced flexibility, relaxation, mental clarity, muscle tone and better posture. Yoga rounds out a great fitness regimen as a form of moving meditation that strengthens while relieving tight muscles and keeping your nervous system (including that fight-or-flight mentality) in check. The term yoga encompasses a wide variety of flows, from the more challenging and strength-based Power Vinyasa, and there are classes available online in formats from power yoga to simple stretching. To access online yoga courses at any time, check out sites like Gaia or Glo that categorize workouts by skill level, time limit, fitness goals and more. Having a yoga mat around will provide support in other elements of your workout as well, from TRX training to ground-based core work. If your 2020 goals are calling for you to skip the gym and take your fitness into your own hands, start with these seven items. Get creative and keep yourself motivated with the endless amounts of workouts you can build with these seven essentials, all while staying within the space of your own home.

WO R KO U T FA S H I O N trends FROM THE HOME TO THE GYM, STEP INTO YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION IN STYLE BY ABIGAIL THORPE

T

he Pacific Northwest is the land of outdoor adventure, but when you aren’t hitting the slopes or on the water paddleboarding, there’s plenty more to keep you active—whether it’s a morning yoga session, CrossFit or the good old gym. Wellness has increasingly become more of a lifestyle choice than a stand-alone event in our day-to-day lives, and as working out becomes a central part of our every day, so too do the clothes we do it in. Leggings aren’t just for the trail or the studio anymore, and our trainers don’t come off the moment we walk out the gym door. According to Allied Market Research, the global activewear market is experiencing an annual 6.5 percent growth rate and expected to reach $547 million by 2024. Celebrities like Kate Hudson, Beyoncé and Khloé Kardashian have created fitness fashion empires of their own and taken to social media, promoting athletic wear as more of a statement piece and less an outfit reserved only for the gym. Whether you’re on the mountain, in the yoga studio or out running errands this new year, here’s a quick trip down the 2020 runway of workout fashion trends. Athleisure and Multifunctional - Workout clothing no longer fits only one specific need or occasion. Men and women alike are looking for pieces you can wear on your morning workout and out to run errands or meet friends for coffee. As lines between the workplace, home and social spaces become increasingly blurred, activewear has to fit many purposes—and look good doing it. The birth of athleisure—activewear you can be athletic in and wear for leisure—has caused the explosion of athletic-wear consumerism.

Expect this trend to continue into the new year, with new design and tech innovation transforming the way we wear our workout clothing. Bold colors, sleek design and eye-catching details mean those leggings aren’t just meant for the studio— they’re making their way into everyday activities, and even occasionally an evening out. Retro: Bold and Bright - Everything comes back around, and workout fashion is no exception to the rule. Expect 2020 athletic wear to run full force into the ‘90s trend that’s been spreading across the fashion industry. We’re talking bright neon colors, statement pieces like matching tracksuit ensembles and big bold logos. Rebirth of brands like Reebok, Champion and Fila are part of this flashback to the ‘90s, with original logos front and center—a fashion statement on and off the track. Despite the winter chill, midriff exposure continues to flaunt its face; don’t expect those crop tops to go anywhere. Sustainable - It may be a flashback to a previous decade style-wise, but athletic wear is taking a forward-thinking step when it comes to sustainability. Traditionally, activewear incorporates a lot of nylon and spandex—materials that take a lot of energy to produce and don’t break down easily in their afterlife. Consumers are more aware of the products they purchase and increasingly look for a company’s sustainability practices—both in its material and waste use, and its approach to fair wage and labor practices. Brands like Patagonia and Athleta are responding in kind, offering new options for the environmentally and socially conscious consumer. Eighty percent of Patagonia’s snow collection is made with recycled

Animal print, like zebra and leopard, is hot in the fashion world this year, and athletic wear is living up to its hype as a wearanywhere statement genre that keeps up with the times. Maybe, just maybe, those zebra print leggings will help you run a little faster. Technologically Innovative - Pretty is as pretty does, but it needs to function well too. Multifunctionality is key to workout clothing these days, which means it needs to hold up as well at the gym as it does on the couch and seamlessly bridge the transition between performance and comfort. Athletic brands have increased their tech performance immensely over past years, and 2020 is all about innovation. Look for highperformance fabrics that keep you cool (or warm) and have sweat-wicking properties for comfort in and out of the gym. Ultra-sculpt leggings help to define muscle, while no-seam technology makes that transition from workout to hangout (literally) seamless. Running and training shoes are sleek and light—and pack more of a punch when it comes to comfort for your feet. And of course, don’t forget the actual inclusion of tech into your gear. Whether it’s hidden pockets for your phone or built-in tracking, workout fashion is all about making your life a little easier. Body Positive - The activewear world is finally catching on that fit comes in all shapes and sizes. As athletic fashion grows in popularity, companies are trending toward a more inclusive, extensive offering that caters to all body types. Established brands like Nike are increasing their size offerings, while smaller labels like Good American or Girlfriend Collective are actively promoting fashion inclusivity and body positivity in their activewear, ensuring everyone a good fit in their fitness lifestyle.

EAT RIGHT healthy eating tips BY JILLAN CHANDLER Our bodies and minds work best when they are fueled by healthy foods, but with the busyness of everyday life, it can be difficult incorporating the right foods into our meals. We’ve compiled some tips and tricks to help make 2020 a successful year filled with delicious and wholesome meals—and make it easy for the entire family!

PLANNING & PREPPING It’s easy to find oneself scrambling about when it comes to mealtime— especially dinner. Pizza or takeout anyone? Instead of that drive-through window or reaching for your phone to call in your order, what if you had all the prep work done for that next family meal? Allot one day a week where you set aside time to plan out your meals for the week, making a list, shopping for those items then prepping them all so they’re ready to go when it comes time to cook. By doing this, dinner will be a breeze, as all you have to do so pull everything you need, ready to go, from the fridge straight to the stove or oven.

PREPARE & FREEZE It’s Sunday night, and you’re making a delicious lasagna for the family to enjoy together. Why not make two, freezing one for another night? Homemade always beats store-bought and allows you to cater the meal precisely to your family’s taste. Incorporate lean meats, vegetables like spinach, zucchini and bell peppers, and anything else you desire! While you’re at it, plan on making a homemade marina to layer and top it off with, storing the rest either in freezer bags or by canning it. Now you not only have another lasagna ready to pop in the oven whenever you choose, you also have fresh sauce to use for another evening meal.

KEEP IT SIMPLE When shopping for the family, you can’t forget the snacks. Be sure to choose easy to eat foods that are also great for on the go—but not the pre-packaged ones! Instead of opting to buy that sugar-laden applesauce, why not go for the fresh apples? Let’s skip the chips and cookies and instead select other fruits like bananas and oranges, which all make for a great snack on the go. And don’t forget the veggies! Celery, carrots and mini bell peppers are great choices. Raw nuts and trail mix are also great! But be sure not to buy the sugar- and salt-coated kind. Raw nuts and trail mixes that have natural dried fruit (sorry, no chocolate chips or M&M’s) make the best choice. String cheese is another great option!

GET THE KIDS INVOLVED Children are more prone to eat healthy meals that they helped prepare! Not only will dinner become more relaxing, as the kids will be more than excited to eat what they have made, but it’s a wonderful way to spend uninterrupted quality time together as a family. Choices are always good. Start with letting them choose what vegetable to have, then let them do the cutting, whether it’s lettuce for the salad, broccoli or green beans. For the protein, give them the option of chicken or steak, then let them help in selecting the seasonings to flavor the meat with. Mashed potatoes anyone? Let them do the mixing. The options are endless.

HOMEMADE “TREATS” It is quite alright to indulge in something sugary and sweet on occasion. Instead of purchasing that cake or cookies from the grocery store, why not invest in a healthy dessert cookbook (there are lots to choose from these days!) and let the kids pick one to prepare together each week. It’s amazing the wonderful treats that you can make that can be healthy for you too! Substituting organic honey, maple syrup or coconut sugar for the staple white sugar is one of the first steps. And, it’s always good to use a bit less than the recipe calls for. Desserts that incorporate fruits like bananas, apples and blueberries are always a good choice. There’s nothing like the smell of something baking in the oven on a cold winter’s day.

DON’T FORGET THE WATER Water is extremely important for all ages and lifestyles. It is said that eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day per person is ideal, though that number can fluctuate greatly, depending on weight. The more accurate measurement of water one should consume each day is their body weight, divided by two, in ounces. If you are a 150-pound person, you should be consuming a minimum of 75 ounces of water each day. Many times, when one feels hunger, it is dehydration they are experiencing. By drinking the right amount of water that your body requires, this can help curve desires for unnecessary snacking or overindulging at mealtime. And the more water you drink, the less you’ll desire sugary, calorie-filled choices. It’s a wonderful, simple, healthy habit the entire family can incorporate into their daily routine.

A WINTER WONDERLAND Make a trip to West Yellowstone this season

By Marguerite Cleveland

W

hen the winter snows blanket the town of West Yellowstone and Yellowstone National Park, the summer crowds dissipate, making this the ideal time of year to visit. West Yellowstone makes the perfect base for exploring all the area has to offer in the winter months and is the closest park entrance to the Old Faithful Geyser. Surrounded by three National Forests, plenty of trout streams and lakes, it makes getting back to nature easy. There is a surprising number of things to do from snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing to winter fly fishing. The town of West Yellowstone is right outside the West Entrance to the park and, although it is closed to cars in the winter, it is open for licensed tour operators for snowmobile and snowcoach tours. Where to Stay The Yellowstone Lodge has a great location for your base during your time in the area. It is only one block away from popular attractions, restaurants and shopping, and just three blocks away from the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The hotel is one of the newer properties in West Yellowstone. It has decent sized modern rooms, and there is even a family suite option if you need more space. Amenities on the property include an indoor heated pool and hot tub. The included continental breakfast is substantial with a nice variety. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Where to Eat Most restaurants in the area are heavy on the Western theme. Think hearty steaks, burgers and comfort food. While in town make sure to try an elk or bison dish. Madison Crossing Lounge is in an old school. The first West Yellowstone school was built in 1918 and now houses commercial businesses including the restaurant. This is a wonderful place to

dine. They work hard to source locally as much as possible to support the local economy and offer a very well-rounded menu with nightly specials and several elk and bison options; think delicious bison meatloaf or elk tenderloin medallions with a blueberry-tarragon reduction. The Slippery Otter Pub is a rowdy, casual pub with good service and tasty food. Try a bison burger or jalapeno wontons with huckleberry sauce. The Book Peddler is a coffee shop tucked in the back of a store. This is where the locals grab coffee. The baked goods are house made, and the blueberry scone is light and delicate, and pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee. What to Do No trip to the area is complete without a trip to Yellowstone National Park. Always stunning, it will blow you away with its beauty during the winter months. Mounds of snow contrast with steaming geysers, and wildlife viewing is at its peak. If you are going to splurge on anything during your trip, make it hiring Yellowstone Guide Amy Beegel, Easy

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Tours Yellowstone, LLC to guide your snowmobile trip into the park. Certified guides are required in the winter months, and Amy is a pro. Super fun and so knowledgeable about the park, she will curate your tour to fit the interests of your group. A great guide makes or breaks a trip, so contact Amy first and she will help you arrange the snowmobile rentals. Plan for a full-day adventure. Local outfitters also have snowsuits, gloves and boots available for rent. Be aware when making any kind of reservations that there is no cell phone service outside of town, so many outfitters will get back to you in the evening after they have returned from day tours. You won’t be able to spot a bear in Yellowstone National Park in the winter because they hibernate, but the bears that live at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center don’t hibernate. The center gives you the opportunity to explore the world of grizzly bears and gray wolves as well as the new River Otter Exhibit. Each exhibit has warm buildings so you can observe the animals both inside and outside. The center has also acquired a world-class exhibit BEARS once it completed its tour of the country. It is interactive and explores the ways bears have captured our attention

through myth, art, literature, history and folklore. It is well worth a visit. The animals that live at the center can no longer return to the wild for a variety of reasons including being orphaned, a nuisance animal or suffered injuries. This is not a typical tourist attraction but an education center, and you will learn so much about the wildlife in the area. Your ticket is good for two days, so don’t be surprised if the kids ask to go back again. The Yellowstone Giant Screen and Trading Post makes a nice stop if the weather is not cooperating. It opens in the afternoon for shopping, and movies start at 3:30pm. The Yellowstone Movie shows every day and provides a good overview of the history of Yellowstone National Park. A current movie is also shown each day. Check with the theater for current listings and times. You’ll want to schedule in time to explore West Yellowstone by foot. It is a cute walkable town with a “Wild West” feel about it. If you want a special adventure, head out to Big Sky for a dogsled adventure with Spirit of the North. Unlike many companies, with Spirit of the North you will receive hands-on instruction and have the thrill of driving a sled dog team. If you’ve never been around an Alaskan huskies dog team, you are in for a treat. The dogs are high energy and love to run. They are friendly and enjoy receiving lots of petting. The trips take place 1 mile about the Mountain Village at the ski resort in what is known as Moonlight Basin. You’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery along the trail including views of Lone Mountain and the Spanish Peaks.

Located around 30 miles outside of West Yellowstone, the historic 320 Guest Ranch offers evening sleigh rides. This magical ride takes you along the Gallatin River on a sleigh pulled by draft horses. On a clear night, being so far out of town, the stars are so bright in the night sky. The sleigh ride takes you to Mountain Man Campsite where you will enjoy wild game chili, a variety of snacks and hot beverages, with the option of adult beverages. Listen to ranch stories by the bonfire before heading back. The trip lasts about an hour. You can also arrange for a private sleigh ride. West Yellowstone is truly special during the wintertime. When planning for your trip, prepare for extreme weather and pack layers and warm clothing. Before heading out each day, check the weather forecast so you don’t get caught in an unexpected storm. Paradise Theatre Ready to entertain audiences in 2020 By Jillian Chandler

ELEVATE January-February

10-01 Paradise Theatre has been entertaining audiences since opening their doors in 2000. Two decades later, and now in its 20th season, despite several moves—the most recent relocation moving the theatre company’s home from Gig Harbor to Port Orchard’s Dragonfly Theatre—Vicki Richards, executive artistic director, and husband Jeff Richards, managing director, have continued to bring the stage alive and engage audiences of all ages through live theatre. A nonprofit theatre organization serving the Puget Sound area, and Gig Harbor’s only live theatre, featuring some of the best local talent, Paradise Theatre produces year-round theatre from September through August. From comedies and dramas to thrillers, musicals and children’s shows, Paradise Theatre offers something for all ages to enjoy. The next performance that Paradise Theatre had yet to be announced as of press time, though the dates have been set for January 10 through February 1. Additional upcoming something include Forbidden Broadway, February 28 through March 21; show still to be announced, April 3 through 25; Shrek, June 19 through July 11; and Pirates of Penzance, August 7 through 29.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com
