MORTGAGE BROKERS we work on YOUR BEHALF with YOUR GOALS and BEST INTERESTS in mind.

“My wife and I were first-time home buyers that decided to work with Northwest Mortgage, and we are so glad we did! Abel and team helped us understand the complicated home purchasing process from the start by breaking down the steps and making sure we understood every detail so that we could make informed decisions about our mortgage. Enough cannot be said about the professionalism and responsiveness of Abel (and team) as he patiently and thoroughly assisted us with questions around the clock. In the end, we closed on time and are happy with the mortgage we were able to lock down. Will definitely work with them again in the future.” – Christian Fabian

hen we think of the Fourth of July, one of the first things that comes to mind is fireworks—of course! Then there’s the paid day off from work for many, and a day spent at the lake, beach, river or park, or even a celebration spent relaxing and socializing in the backyard with a barbecue. But many people often forget why this is a day of celebration for us here in the United States. What is the significance of July 4? Let’s freshen up on some history. July 4 marks an incredibly significant day for us Americans, as it commemorates the day the United States officially became its own nation, as the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776—and America was born. Although the Fourth of July has been celebrated each year since 1776, it didn’t become a federal holiday until nearly a century later, in 1870. And it wasn't until 1941 that it became a paid holiday for federal employees.

have fought for this nation and those who continue to fight each and every day to ensure our freedoms and safety. Those who serve the greater nation as active-duty military (and our veterans), and those who serve closer to home as firefighters and policemen and women; they all have a significant role to serve and protect. May we never forget that these men and women sacrifice daily so that we may live our lives knowing that our families, our friends, our communities, our nation, are being protected every second, every minute, every hour of every day … all because of those who have dedicated their lives to ensuring the greater good for each person in our nation. We at Like Media want to say, “Thank you.” As we celebrate Independence Day, remember that there are those on the front lines who instead of spending time with their loved ones on this holiday are in uniform ready to protect at any moment. Let’s remember to honor them this July 4.

Beach lover’s paradise in the Northwest

FURNISHING A CHARMING WATERFRONT HOME IN COOPERS POINT - OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON By Deann Hammer, Broadway Design

Broadway Design recently furnished a charming waterfront home in Coopers Point in Olympia, Washington. The homeowner is a single woman in her mid-30s, who is bright and talented, and owns her own mortgage company. The client requested a coastal theme with a “Serena and Lily Co.” feel. Deann Hammer, owner of Broadway Design, was ready for the challenge.

T

he woodwork was gorgeous but a bit too heavy, so we had the balusters on the stairs painted Sherwin Williams high reflective white to lighten things up. The walls were originally yellow, so we cooled things down by painting all the walls Sherwin Williams Rhinestone. It is a lovely color that plays well off of the water and contrasts the white trim nicely. The kitchen was previously updated by the former owner, although the dining banquette needed a refresh. Our designers selected new bench seat cushion fabric in Sunbrella Grey Ticking, added custom decorative pillows, and punched up the seating area with three large woven grass light pendants that give the space warmth and drama. A solid walnut modern single-pedestal dining table was also added to set the stage. The great room is quite large, so we added a 6x4-foot tall wide custom

framed octopus art piece above the mantle and an extra-large woven round mirror over the TV to play off of the extra high ceiling height. Two seating areas were created to break up the large expanse. The chairs by the fireplace are from Palacek, with custom performance fabric (wet bathing suits are okay!), and they are flanked by solid brass drink tables. A freestanding bar cabinet rests near the fireplace for a refreshing cocktail after a day in the sand. The large sectional is custom made in a performance fabric as well to handle dogs and beach life. The coffee table is made from ground seashells and is called the “Clamshell Lava Table” by Palacek. It is cast in a polymeric plaster with crushed up shells on the top, giving it a lustrous shimmer to the finish. Upstairs, the loft is adjacent to the client’s open office area and is a wonderful place to sit and watch the sea life swim by. We placed a large sectional with a limestone coffee table so she can put her feet up and relax without having to worry about scratching a table or leaving water marks on her table. The upstairs guest rooms are darling with twin end-to-end built-in beds in one room, and a queen bed in the other. The themes are timeless, with

custom-made art and oars hanging on the wall with a gentle nod to the sea without overwhelming the space with nick knacks and shells in glass vases, typically seen in a beach motif. There is a sitting area in the second bedroom with ottoman and floor lamp for private guest lounging, and a coffee bar in the hall outside that room for easy access from the office for a quick pick-me-up while working, or for guests. Our team at Broadway Design was truly blessed to be a part of this special home. Deann Hammer is the owner of Broadway Design, a boutique interior design firm in Gig Harbor. GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

BY JENNIFER “TAZ” VAZQUEZ

ave you heard about the “Cookie Girl?” Sophina Lindquist, a 12-year-old from Minnesota, made chocolate chip cookies with her mom (several days a month) and delivered them to police departments, fire stations and ambulance companies in the St. Cloud area (for three years, y’all)! Her mom said she wanted to thank everyone who protected and served the community. When Sophina couldn’t deliver cookies due to COVID, they spent 300 days outside waving, smiling, and sharing a positive message of thanks and love. Her mom described how people’s faces were literally transformed as they passed by. The simplicity of giving from a place of gratitude, or willingness to share a smile and positive message, got me thinking about the importance of sacrifice, service and community. What does the word “sacrifice” mean to you? A martyr? Surrendering? Doing something you don’t want to do but feel you should? The modern definition of sacrifice means giving up something valued or sacrificing oneself, or one’s interest, for others, a cause or ideal.

variety of ways via your time, ideas, talents, resources or even a financial donation. Giving back is a way of sharing the gifts we each have. For example, one of my passions is fitness and kickboxing. Three years ago, I saw a Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) class at our local YMCA. RSB is a non-contact boxing class for those with Parkinson’s disease that helps slow the progression of the disease. I wanted to help and became a volunteer RSB coach. The head coach and I even moved RSB online and have taught classes as volunteers during COVID. We love supporting the boxers! Think about your gifts and interests, then explore ways to match those talents to help someone else. The key is genuine giving without expectation. I want to point out one cautionary note of service (or sacrifice). When it is begrudging, an expectation of return, exclusionary, or at the expense of ourselves, it can lead to burnout, a loss of authentic connection, or even resentment. So, take a little time to define your boundaries and determine when you say yes, how often, and when you have to focus elsewhere in your life, in order to maintain balance.

Being of service is an example of sacrifice. When we do something to help others, without expectation, it benefits us in several ways: It helps us clarify our values and what is important to us; it helps us grow as a person and create meaning in our lives; it is good for our mental health and emotional wellbeing; it helps us connect and build stronger communities; lastly, it can also help us be more successful in life. Mahatma Gandhi said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Being of genuine service creates a ripple effect when aligned with who we are and what we want to create in life, because it shapes our positive choices and intentions— helping to create more positive possibilities and opportunities for us, others and our community.

Are you curious on how you might give back? Acts of service can be accomplished in a

How can you be of service, today?

If you want to lead a more successful and fulfilled life, consider sharing your gifts and give back. Your life will feel more meaningful because of it.

One Year Later T H E B E N E F I T S O F “ V I R T U A L” D I V O R C E M E D I AT I O N By Felicia Soleil, Attorney/Mediator

I

f anyone had told me I’d be writing about the virtues of this subject a year ago, I never would have believed them. And yet, here I am about to advocate for, and fully endorse, the benefits of online “virtual” divorce mediation.

In my practice as a divorce and family lawyer and mediator, I’ve always been a huge proponent of in-person dispute resolution models. I have never been a fan of separating couples into different rooms when working with them to mediate their divorce or parenting plan issues. While “shuttle diplomacy” has its place, I find moving between two parties in separate rooms—only because parties don’t like being in the same room together—does not help resolve their communication problems. Obviously, this also results in increased costs. It was always important that some of those clients become “comfortable with their discomfort” while having difficult conversations around finances, parenting, and their separation in general, particularly when couples are needing to learn to co-parent better. In fact, many clients were grateful for this guidance. So, I was naturally dreading using Zoom video-conferencing during the COVID restrictions as a substitute for in-person mediation sessions. However, while this new model has certainly put my skills (and the clients’ skills) to the test, I’ve found that it makes little sense to return to the pre-pandemic model of in-office, in-person mediations. The benefits to online video mediation are many. Clients can be separate while together, either from separate rooms in the same house or from their separate residences. This allows us to have three-way conversations at the same time, while providing that “separateness” that many clients prefer. Successful mediation begins with each client’s comfort level. What can be more comfortable than attending to your difficult divorce work from the privacy and comfort of your own home? I’ve seen parties curled up on plush couches, sitting at their kitchen counters, and even sometimes propped up on pillows on their bed. Whether that’s for comfort, privacy, or both, it sure beats sitting in a lawyer/mediator’s conference room. Clients also don’t have to get dressed up for those meetings anymore.

26

|

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

It’s the rare client who doesn’t appear in my virtual mediation sessions wearing sweatshirts and other comfortable casual wear. Another “plus” to comfort (and also to a few welcome lighthearted distractions) has been how clients’ pets have literally entered the picture. Whether it’s been a dog with his squeaky toy, or a cat prowling across a keyboard on camera (or expelling a hairball), many clients have had the benefit of their animal companion’s presence during our sessions. And there is no commute to my office! My client base has widened geographically since clients no longer need to drive to Gig Harbor from the other side of the bridge, pay tolls, and take extra time away from work or home by a commute. I work with a lot of clients who prefer to schedule their mediation sessions as late in the day as possible so as not to lose work, and the lack of commuting has certainly shaved off valuable time for them, as well as made those late sessions much more productive because clients aren’t stressed from feeling rushed or caught in traffic before we meet. Lastly, for those clients with children, video-conferencing from home for mediation can reduce the need for childcare during the sessions. Most parties have been successful with getting their kids settled in another room and then attending to their mediation. That’s not to say there haven’t been some delightful interruptions (“say ‘Hi’ to the nice lady on the computer!”), but I’ve never had a mediation session detrimentally affected by parties’ children popping in to ask for something. Overall, the work has taken on new meaning by allowing clients to better engage in divorce mediation on their own terms, so I’ll be offering and encouraging virtual video-conferencing mediation for the foreseeable future, with or without the pandemic. Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via videoconference or phone.

Building Better Solutions for Clients With almost 30 years experience serving families in Gig Harbor and Pierce County, Felicia Soleil provides more constructive alternatives to dissolving a marriage outside of a courtroom. In addition to her family law practice, she also provides mediation services, offering legal support, education and case management - from simple to complex - for separation and divorce, parenting plans, child support and prenuptial agreements.

Facing a divorce or separation? Felicia focuses on reducing and resolving conflict, helping you transition by moving on, not just moving out.

If you find yourself in need of both types of insurance, a life insurance policy that combines a death benefit with a long-term care benefit may appeal to you. Here's how it works Some life insurance issuers offer life insurance with a long-term care rider available for an additional charge. If you buy this type of policy, you can pay the premium in a single lump sum or by making periodic payments. In any case, the policy provides you with a death benefit that you can also use to pay for long-term care-related expenses, should you incur them. The amount of death benefit and long-term care allowance is based on your age, gender and health at the time you buy the policy. The appeal of this combination policy lies in the fact that either you'll use the policy to pay for long-term care expenses, or your beneficiaries will receive the insurance proceeds at your death. In either case, someone will benefit from the premiums you pay.

BUILDING SOLID FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS

We develop & review strategies, plans & solutions, as well as work to create a safe & caring environment where everyone can discuss their financial concerns, dreams & goals.

Long-term care riders The long-term care benefit is added to the life insurance policy by either an accelerated benefits rider or an extension of benefits rider. Accelerated benefits rider An accelerated benefits rider makes it possible for you to access your death benefit to pay for expenses related to long-term care. The death benefit is reduced by the amount you use for long-term care expenses, plus a service charge. If you need long-term care for a lengthy period of time, the death benefit will eventually be depleted. This same rider also can be used if you have a terminal illness that may require payment of large medical bills. Because accelerating the death benefit can have unfavorable tax consequences, you may want to consult your tax professional before exercising this option. Other provisions

Typically, qualifying for payments under a long-term care rider is similar to the requirements for most stand-alone long-term care policies. You must be unable to perform some of the activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, getting in or out of a bed or chair, toilet use, or maintaining continence) or suffer from a severe cognitive impairment.

The policy provides you with a death benefit that you can also use to pay for long-term care-related expenses, should you incur them.

An elimination period may also apply: You pay for the initial cost of long-term care out-of-pocket for a specific number of days (usually 30 to 90) before you can apply for payments under the policy. As with all life and long-term care insurance, the insurance company will require you to answer some health-related questions and submit to a physical examination before issuing a combination policy to you. Is a combination policy right for you? Deciding whether a combination policy is right for you depends on a number of factors. Do you need life insurance and long-term care insurance? How much life and long-term care insurance will you need? How long will you need it? Will the long-term care part of a combination policy provide sufficient coverage?

Grads!

A long-term care rider may not provide as many features as a stand-alone long-term care policy. For example, the combination policy may not cover assisted living or home health aides. It also may not provide an inflation adjustment, an important feature considering the rising cost of long-term care. The tax benefits offered by a qualified long-term care policy may not apply to the long-term care portion of combination policies, which could result in taxation of long-term care benefits received from the policy. And keep in mind that as you use your long-term care benefits, you're depleting the death benefit—a death benefit you presumably wanted to pass on to your heirs or perhaps use to pay for estate taxes. Finally, compare costs of combination policies to other forms of life insurance, such as term insurance and stand-alone long-term care policies. Depending on your age and health, the cost for the combination life policy may actually be higher than the total premiums paid for separate life insurance and long-term care policies, especially if your life insurance need is temporary (such as income replacement during your working years) rather than permanent.

uly 4 marks our nation’s independence, but did you know that July is National Park and Recreation Month? And, even better, this is also the month that PenMet Parks will celebrate its 17th anniversary!

According to Chuck Cuzzetto, Peninsula Metropolitan Park District (PenMet) marketing specialist, the theme of National Park and Recreation Month for this year is Our Park and Recreation Story. For July, PenMet Parks staff will be at Sehmel Homestead Park every Thursday to give out PenMet Parks swag and provide information on our District. They will also have “Parks Passports” on hand for friends and families to discover new parks, answer questions and turn their completed passport in at the end of the month to be entered to win some awesome prizes. “More than anything, we want to share with our community the joy of parks and recreation,” shares Chuck. “Our staff truly do focus on the joy of being active, healthy and engaged.”

(Tickets to the event, which are $20 each, are still available online at PenMetParks.org/event/ party-in-the-park-21, so don’t wait, and get yours today!) For families, they are bringing back Family Fun Fest, scheduled for July 31. This is a family friendly festival of fun for all, where kids of all ages can enjoy live music, food trucks, art activities, hands-on learning, and more! Both events will be held at Sehmel Homestead Park (10123 - 78th Avenue NW & Sehmel Drive NW). “Hosting these events comes with our District’s passion of providing diverse park and recreation opportunities to our community," according to Chuck. GIG HARBOR NORTH A PLACE FOR GROWTH

G

ig Harbor has always been a place of growth. The story of Gig Harbor’s growth was widely associated with its close association with Tacoma. Because Tacoma was growing, Gig Harbor was also expected to grow. However, Gig Harbor, throughout history, has continually established itself as having its own distinctive feel. Gig Harbor has always been unique. With beginning industries such as logging, fishing and world-class ship building, Gig Harbor bustled with its own activity. Town centers grew around its ferry docks, and everyone in town owned a boat. That changed once a successful bridge was built after WWII, which made owning a car more practical. Gig Harbor has only since expanded. While the major industries that formed downtown no longer exist, the character of Gig Harbor still remains. People still fish, people still own boats, and people still know their neighbors. And even though tourism has replaced its historical industries as a regular part of Gig Harbor’s economy, it doesn’t feel at all touristy. Today we have a new part of town, aptly named Gig Harbor North. The story of its conception, development and expansion is the

story of the preservation of Gig Harbor’s history and character. Because of the innovative Gig Harbor North, Gig Harbor is still distinctly Gig Harbor. Their story begins over 30 years ago. In 1990, Washington state passed a new law to prevent urban sprawl, called the Growth Management Act. The underlying principle behind the law was that land is a finite resource. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. There’s no more. Forests and farms were falling, only to be replaced by illogical subdivisions that would or would not prove to be successful. The Growth Management Act directed any growth and new subdivisions toward current cities, preventing unincorporated turmoil. However, the law was vague. For the next 10 years, the courts warred over how the law was to be interpreted. Meanwhile, while the courts battled and debated, Gig Harbor was thinking ahead. Gig Harbor was to accept new growth, according to state law, but was interested in doing so on their own terms. How was Gig Harbor to handle the influx of families, while preserving its unique character? Gig Harbor North would be the place that the city directed their

growth, while keeping in mind the goal of making it an integral part of Gig Harbor’s heart. Planning for Gig Harbor North (more than 700 acres) began in the late 1980s and became a reality when the area was annexed to the city in 1998. It provided an area to direct growth, while preserving the character of Gig Harbor’s downtown. In 2001, construction began on the Target, Albertsons and Home Depot. The largest project in the newly annexed area is Harbor Hill’s 320-acre mixed-use development, which was owned at the time by Olympic Property Group, a subsidiary of Pope Resources. Contrary to the usual way of doing things, it didn’t just start with houses. Gig Harbor North began with neighborhoods. “We brought in the YMCA, partnered with the school district, and built two parks,” says Raydient Places + Properties Vice President Jon Rose. From the YMCA, the schools, and the parks came homes for families. Each neighborhood built was then connected by a series of trail systems. The trails connect the homes to all the amenities of its neighborhood, continuing a Pacific Northwest tradition of safe access to its outdoors. Gig Harbor North furthered its accessibility by connecting transit, specifically 34

Today, Gig Harbor continues to increase in orderly growth. With Gig Harbor North has come a host of essential city businesses. Gig Harbor no longer has to cross the Narrows for basic services. What’s more, the downtown is preserved. Gig Harbor has not diminished in its growth. If anything, Gig Harbor’s character has only been expounded upon. “People love the neighborhoods,” says Jon Rose. And it’s no wonder! With its connectivity, accessibility, and neighborhood feel, Gig Harbor North is not just a group of houses. They are homes. However, there is still one last development to build. Gig Harbor North is soon to begin construction on its crowning jewel: Village Center. Building Village Center begins with its anchor tenant, a grocery story. The grocery store will fill a hole in providing for a basic need in the community, from which the rest of Village Center will expand. After the anchor tenant comes other various shops and restaurants, all further connected by a network of trails. Walkability is a high priority for Gig Harbor North. And so this story has a happy ending. Gig Harbor is not just a place for owners of historic homes within walking distance to downtown. It’s not just a place for tourists to visit. It is not just a picturesque little town with all the character that comes with the title. Gig Harbor is more. It’s a place that has grown to include a greater community, one that firmly establishes its independence from its larger surrounding cities. Gig Harbor is thriving and connected. Gig Harbor is all its own. Gig Harbor is a community.

A Natural Approach Start your healing journey today with Dr. Lisa

By Jillian Chandler

“I

had wanted to be a doctor since I was a little girl, but I never thought I was smart enough,” Dr. Lisa Ballantyne recalls. Though she tried many professions throughout her life, she always found herself drawn to, and dabbling in, health of one kind or the other. “When I was running a lodging business, there was a feral kitten that I fell in love with,” she beams. “She had respiratory issues that conventional medicine couldn’t help with, so I started researching herbal medicines that I could give her. She started getting better, and although she was never healed completely, she went from a kitten they said wouldn’t live one year to one that I just recently lost at 13 years of age. It was at that moment, with my sweet little kitten, that I decided I needed to go to naturopathic medical school. I found that not only was I smart enough, if you want something bad enough, you can do anything.” Lisa moved to Washington to attend school and started a residency in Port Orchard. "I soon realized that an insurance-based model was not something that was sustainable for me, and I decided to leave that practice and open my own in Gig Harbor," she says. "I believe in using whatever I can to help a patient, and with insurance my hands were often tied." In 2018, she opened Dr. Lisa, MagosND Natural Medicine in Gig Harbor, and she is excited to share that she has moved her business to a more centralized location, right here in the harbor! Doors are now open at 3007 Judson Street, where Dr. Lisa, MagosND Natural Medicine will continue to provide superior naturopathic medical care, specializing in regenerative medicine as well as hormones, thyroid, adrenal and gut health. Through regenerative medicine, Dr. Lisa offers orthopedic pain management using nutrition, supplementation, strength training and injection therapies such as prolotherapy, neural prolo, PRP (PlateletRich Plasma) and ozone therapy. In addition, she offers sexual health PRP for low libido, erectile disfunction and incontinence, as well as aesthetic PRP facelifts and microneedling facials with PRP. Dr. Lisa shares that she was drawn to regenerative medicine for a couple of reasons: “The first, I had prolotherapy on my knee, and it made it so I could run again. But, more than that, my dad had two hip replacements—one that went well and one that didn’t. He ended up with multiple infections that he fought for years, and I believe was actually the cause of his early death.

“My goal is to help as many people as possible avoid joint replacements for as long as possible and to help them live with a higher quality of life than they are able to with pain.” As a naturopathic physician, Dr. Lisa follows the following principles when guiding her patients in disease prevention and restoration: the inherent healing power of nature; identifying and treating the cause; first do no harm; treating the whole person; doctor as teacher; and prevention. When not helping her patients on their journey to healing, Lisa enjoys working out at Better Gym. In addition to having PRP and prolotherapy

injections herself, getting strong has been key to her own journey in becoming pain free. “Susan Moore is a master at helping people do this in a safe and effective way,” Lisa affirms. She surrounds herself with those she loves: her partner, and their many animals: Red, her horse, two dogs Moki (10 months) and Chloe (3 years old), and cat Eliot (9). “We love to be outdoors going for walks, exploring farmers markets, listening to live music and going on adventures,” she smiles. “We love hanging out with friends and family, as well as traveling.” Dr. Lisa has also established a 501c(3) nonprofit called Wild Roots Wellness (WildRootsWellness.org) to help people who otherwise would not be able to afford naturopathic medical care. For those who prefer a more natural, holistic approach to healing and wellness, Dr. Lisa welcomes you to call her today to get started on your road to health.

IN A NEW PLACE TO CALL HOME FISH BUILDING ON SCHEDULE BY COLIN ANDERSON

W

hen Jan Coen married a Navy man, she would be quickly introduced into what it was like to live within the greater military family. Service members are often moved around station to station or deployed for long periods away from their families. During this time, military families band together and help each other out with whatever they can in order to make life easier. Jan and husband Ron saw firsthand the power of what a small community helping each other through difficult times can do to boost moral or alleviate a bit of weight and stress off one’s shoulders through simple deeds and assistance. After retiring from the Navy in 1975, the couple moved back to Gig Harbor, and Jan wanted to continue her drive to help and be of service to others. “I was looking

38

|

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

around through local church groups and learned that there was no short-term assistance in the area,” she recalled. Jan brainstormed with other community members and, within a year, she had 15 volunteers and was providing what help she could to those in need. By the 1980s, the opportunity to operate a food bank became available, and the Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank was born. Jan, Ron, board members and countless volunteers have since provided a leg up to thousands of individuals and families in the area. “It’s amazing how this community cares about those suffering,” said Jan. As more funds and donations come in, so have the services FISH provides to its clients. While it continues to provide food for those in need, it also tackles transportation assistance, help with rent and

FOCUS utilities, referrals for other services and even funds to help young people further their education in college or by attending trade school. As the organization has grown, its building (four homes cobbled together plus an old theater, as Jan puts it) is being pushed to the max of its limits. Food donations are stored off-site, meaning it takes volunteers a trip from the store to a storage unit, then another trip from storage to the food bank once there is room for it. The organization has been looking for a more efficient home for the better part of a decade and, as it turns out, their dream location was just a few steps away. Just 376 feet from the current location will be the brand-new build, a 10,000-square-foot facility that will not only be beautiful and modern, but also help streamline its operations. Instead of

food being stashed all over town, the new facility will have a fullscale warehouse in which drivers can pull up with donations, and other volunteers can organize and categorize them. Under current protocols, clients of FISH pull up to the facility, and volunteers bring them a box of food. Once things return to normal, the food shopping area will also be greatly expanded, as will the selections and nutritional options. Instead of having cramped spaces for other services, the new location will have dedicated rooms for expanded clothing and household goods area, offices for staff, a conference room for groups, and private offices to provide a place for confidential client meetings.

“Gig Harbor has a strong tradition of taking care of our neighbors, and this new facility will ensure that the tradition will continue for generations to come," said Ron Coen, GHP FISH Board president. While not currently under construction, all signs point to the project getting approval from the city. Both a builder’s representative and architect have provided what is needed, and the City of Gig Harbor Design Review Board approved that design earlier this year. An initial building permit was issued, and the organization has hit all items on its checklist thus far. It shouldn’t be too much longer now until they receive final approval from the city, in which case construction would begin this fall. If all goes to plan, the bulk of the work will be done throughout the winter, with final touches added in the spring of 2022. A grand opening celebration will take place shortly thereafter. A project of this magnitude could not have gone forward without the hard work and dedication from those in the community. “When we started, we just wanted to be of service to the community. We’ve found that people are just so good hearted and want to help, and it’s amazing just how much this has grown,” said Jan. The building will come in at a cost of roughly $8 million. There’s also an endowment of $500,000 set up. The land is leased for the next 99 years at a cost of $1 per year. FISH believes that the efficiency of the new building will make it more affordable to operate despite being larger than its current home. Another advantage of a new home is the presentation for those utilizing the services within. Entering into a professional building and having private locations in which to discuss aid needed will be a boost to those seeking help. It’s a sign that the community cares enough about them to not just provide food but to create a location that’s warm and welcoming. While Jan is eagerly awaiting the construction of her new home, the daily thank you cards and stories of success are what continue to give her the most pride. She’s encountered countless examples of the impact FISH has had on the community and sees those who they’ve helped keep the 40

cycle going. “We had a woman come in the other day and say, ‘I was hungry in the ‘80s and you helped me; it’s my turn to give back.’” Another community member recently pulled up and popped the back of her car vehicle open with an entire Costco run, just because she wanted to do her part. While the wait for the new building goes on, the need in the community does as well. The number of families and individuals in need that peaked during the height of the pandemic has subsided, however, FISH is still providing thousands of dollars in aid and food each month to those in need of assistance. Drivers are still needed to pick up food donations from local stores and grocers, and others to sort through household goods. Just a few hours a week can have a great impact on the community. “It’s an incredible community, and the support has been overwhelming,” said Ron. “When COVID hit especially, this community really came out to help their neighbors.” The new build is further proof of that support. Once it’s completed, it will help volunteers give even more assistance and help FISH continue its mission for generations to come. “Instead of just giving out fish, we want to give our clients a fishing pole,” said Jan.

NAVIGATING FIRE SEASON Summer forecast: hot and dry

BY COLIN ANDERSON

S

ummer is the best time to get out and enjoy the wonderful hiking, biking and camping spots that the Northwest is famous for. While more and more people are finding the beauty and serenity of these special places, carelessness with fire could lead to devastating consequences. The National Interagency Fire Center is predicting an above average fire season for much of the West with increased awareness for Southeastern Washington, the Cascades, Central Oregon and Northern California. A dry spring combined with a predicted hot and dry summer, could see our air quality reduced in the second half of summer, as fires even hundreds of miles away can have a great impact on the region.

While many fires are caused by lightning strikes igniting timber or grassland, the majority are in fact caused by humans. According to the United States Forest Service, most years nine out of 10 wildland fires are human caused. Sometimes it’s a blown electrical pole or other cause out of our hands, but as evidenced throughout recent history, carelessness with a campfire, running engine, fireworks or cigarette can also lead to catastrophe. There are simple precautions to take as to not be the cause of a fire. One of the leading causes of wildland fires is campers not properly extinguishing their campfire. If your fire is lit in a primitive site, be sure you have at least a 10-foot circumference away from any fuels that could be ignited by sparks leaving your fire ring. Keep fires small and only burn clean, dry tinder and never burn garbage that could be lifted away by the wind. If your campsite is in a designated campground, be sure to only light a fire within the fire pit or ring. A common mistake when extinguishing a fire is to just dump a bottle of water on it until the flames are out. While water is a good start, be sure to mix in dirt with a shovel and mix thoroughly. Your fire is extinguished only when you are able to place the palm of your hand on it without needing to pull back. If you are simply going for a day hike, be conscious of where you park your car. A hot engine parked over dry grass can spark a fire, and you could lose your vehicle in the process. The same is true for off-road vehicles. Stay on designated trails, and be conscious of your surroundings. Finally, pay attention to the current fire danger and fire restrictions of the forest you are visiting. If fires are not allowed, do not start one. When conditions are elevated to “High” or “Extreme,” not only are the chances of sparking a fire greater, but the chance for a large-scale fire greatly increases due to the conditions. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather as well. If it’s been hot in your area and a thunderstorm rolls in, it might be time to call it a day. Fires sparked by lighting can fight through rainfall and grow quickly in the right conditions.

Pay attention to the current fire danger and fire restrictions.

PIERCE COUNTY UNITES TO END HOMELESSNESS Plan underway to ensure all residents have a place to call home BY RACHEL KELLY

Y

our landlord went bankrupt and didn’t tell you. The only reason you found out is because you were served an eviction notice, and you have to be out by the end of the week. Already on the brink of your funds, you need time to save up for a deposit for a new place. With rent being high in the area, you also need time to find a new roommate. You pack your things into the car and find yourself in the shelter for the night. You place all your important belongings into a locker (keys, phone and wallet …) and hop in the shower. When you get out you discover that someone has broken the lock and taken off with your stuff. By the time you get a hold of the bank, using someone else’s cell phone the next morning, half your income is gone. Just like that, what would have been a couple of weeks on

and off the streets has become several months. You’re homeless. An easy hole to fall in, but a hard one to dig out of. Homelessness can be a long journey coupled with a feeling of invisibility. Getting out is an uphill battle against prejudice, poverty, abuse and loneliness. Pierce County, however, is determined to make progress toward health, and sustainable living. By the end of 2021, Pierce County’s goal is to end homelessness. The first order of business in combating homelessness in the area is to understand the structures and situations that contribute to it. To provide this much-needed information, Pierce County has developed the “point-

in-time” count. The point-in-time count is “a one-day snapshot that captures the characteristics and situations of people living here without a home.” In other words, Pierce County workers are not attempting to solve homelessness from an office. They are actually getting up and getting out to count and converse with the homeless in our community. The most recent point-in-time count surveys the situations of 1,897 people experiencing homelessness. Of those 1,897, 47 percent have at least one source of income. Twenty-two percent are chronically homeless, 36 percent female, 6 percent are unaccompanied youth, 8 percent are veterans, and 16 percent are adult survivors of domestic violence. Also, even though people of color make up only 27 percent of our population, they make up 47 percent of our people experiencing homelessness. Surprisingly, not everyone sleeps outside. Forty-six percent sleep in shelters, with 31 percent in a car or abandoned building and 9 percent in transitional housing. Seventeen percent live in a tent or on the street. 46

Contrary to popular knowledge, the majority of people experiencing homelessness lived in Pierce County before becoming homeless, with the rest of the majority living within Washington. Only 6 percent surveyed lived outside of Washington before becoming homeless; meaning that homelessness is our problem, in our community, rather than a far-off problem meant to be solved elsewhere. In 2019, Gig Harbor and the greater Key Peninsula participated in the point-in-time count for the first time. Previously, the number for people experiencing homelessness in the Key Peninsula was 1.5, which is far from accurate. Nine volunteers stepped up to survey the homeless in our community, and found 49 people experiencing homelessness. Of those 49, 24 were in Gig Harbor. While the PIT count fluctuates, and in 2020 inperson counts were severely restricted, having a general understanding of homelessness is intrinsically valuable. The results of the Key Peninsula PIT echo those that are mirrored in the larger Pierce County, but it is

also invaluable for bringing Gig Harbor into the conversation. We have people who need help here too. Our voice is part of the solution. To address these issues, Pierce County has formed a coalition made up of more than 200 members. The Tacoma Pierce County Coalition to End Homelessness is further subdivided into 13 action committees that are meant to address issues head-on. The committees establish housing, steering (support), safe encampments and employment opportunities. Essentially, the coalition is a team made up of faith-based organizations, nonprofits and city resources (including the police department and social services). “We feel that any communication between nonprofits, government representatives and community leaders is positive,” says Daniel Johnson of Harbor Hope Center. teens who are experiencing homelessness here in our community, but they are also actively involved in the dangers of Fentanyl that specifically affect our area. Harbor Hope Center continues to increase their involvement with drug counselors as a result. On-the-ground firsthand knowledge, such as what Harbor Hope Center offers, is exactly why the Coalition to End Homelessness was formed. No one understands the challenges that our communities face more than those that experience it and see it. The issue may be vast, but the resources are broad. What’s more, now these resources are unified, accessible, and ready to go. Ending homelessness has gone from being a lofty ideal to being a real goal. Together with Pierce County, the Key Peninsula can bring an end to homelessness.

Home Away from Home Epic waterfront getaways for your ideal relaxing vacation

By Abigail Thorpe

N

estled along the Sound shoreline sit some of Gig Harbor’s best luxury waterfront vacation rentals. Boasting fantastic views, direct water access and prime locations, Stay Waterfront Gig Harbor’s homes offer visitors a one-of-a-kind stay for the price of a hotel. Visitors enjoy their own private waterfront access in upscale Gig Harbor residences where guests enjoy all the amenities of a home, with space for up to 14 people in the largest rental. David Baumgardner and Ann Jolie started the company in 2016 with a mission to share their love of staying right on the water with others. “The most rewarding part of this business is seeing guests' reaction to their accommodations,” says Baumgardner. “We love sharing the properties with others and occasionally meeting some of our guests. We have met guests from around the world, and many have returned.” Stay Waterfront Gig Harbor offers five different rental properties with water views. Four of the properties sit directly on the water and have a private beach. Guests can expect an actual room and comfortable bed to sleep in—Baumgardner and Jolie take care to make sure sleeper couches and multiple beds crowded into rooms are not part of the experience. The company has received only 5-star reviews since its start and prides itself on its quick, reliable and open communication with guests. Gig Harbor is a short drive for inlanders looking for a weekend getaway, and all of Stay Waterfront Gig Harbor’s homes provide a clean, unique and relaxing opportunity for families and individuals to enjoy a weekend on the water, whether they’re coming from far, or simply enjoying a relaxing staycation. Travel restrictions and health concerns still may be present, however, things are starting to open up to allow for people’s summer travel plans and into the fall and winter. A local vacation (or staycation) anytime of year is always a treat at the Stay Waterfront Gig Harbor properties. “More locals are now enjoying these waterfront getaways without having to travel far,” says Baumgardner. There are no other places in Gig Harbor that offer these “on the water” experiences. Each rental offers kayaks and canoes free of charge, and some even have fire pits to enjoy the crisp harbor evenings. Each home is thoroughly cleaned after each use, so guests can rest assured of a safe, healthy place to spend time with family and friends with all of the privacy they need—complemented by the most spectacular views. They take extra special care to ensure all guests enjoy their stay to the fullest each time they visit.

Baumgardner was born and raised in North Tacoma and got involved in real estate at the early age of 17. He and Jolie, who is originally from California, have lived in Gig Harbor for the last several years, developing a deep love of the community and its waterfront offerings and gorgeous views. The couple works to give back to the community both locally and internationally. “We have a clean and sober transitional house helping men integrate back into society with the Department of

Corrections,” says Baumgardner. They are also involved with a school of 800 students in Liberia, work with the Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank and Community Services, and participate in other local and national nonprofits including the Rescue Mission. During the COVID-19 health crisis, they offered their homes at no charge to health-care workers and first responders who could not return home due to the virus. For Baumgardener and Jolie, it’s all about providing guests with an unforgettable experience like no other—a true vacation in every sense of the word. Accommodations are often priced equal to what it would cost the same number of guests to stay in a hotel, and each vacation rental is specially situated to provide the best access to water and local attractions, as well as breathtaking views of the Sound. Your dream summer vacation is waiting on the shores of Gig Harbor, where the entire family can enjoy a reunion or celebration free of stress and worry. SHIN SPLINTS And how to beat them!

By Andrew Mason, PTA

I

f you’ve ever had a burning pain in your shins forcing you to cut a run short or take a break from your workout, chances are you have encountered shin splints. Shin splints are painful and can show up at the most inopportune times—affecting runners and other highly active individuals alike. In this article, we will cover what shin splints are, what causes them and what you can do to prevent and treat them. What are shin splints? The term shin splints refers to what is medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome. As this name suggests, the tibia (the long bone on the front of your shin) and its surrounding structures can become stressed or overworked, causing irritation that is typically felt as a burning pain along your shin.

What causes shin splints? Though the pain you feel in your shin may seem sudden, shin splints rarely show up overnight. Shin splints are generally a result of repeated stresses that develop into the pain we are familiar with. These repeated stresses occur when we push our bodies harder or faster than they are accustomed to. Over time our bones and muscles can become overworked and unable to deal with landing impacts or quick directional changes. Here is a list of some of the most common causes of shin splints: • Inadequate warm-up period prior to exercise • Excessive training • Muscular weakness, imbalances or tightness

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

The mind-body practice of meditation has long been used for physical relaxation and to increase calmness, improve psychological balance, and enhance overall health and well-being. When you realize it's time to "take a breather," don't ignore your body, heart and mind. Find a quiet place (if possible), and focus on your breath while being mindful of your thoughts. Just a few seconds of being mindful while focusing your breathing can have immediate, positive effects to last throughout the day.

Shin splints are generally a result of repeated stresses that develop into the pain we are familiar with. • Poor running technique or form • Training on sloped or uneven surfaces • Unsuitable footwear • Flat feet (also known as fallen arches) What are the best treatment options for shin splints? While the best and easiest way to deal with shin splints is to prevent them in the first place, traditional shin splint treatment involves a period of rest (a few days to a couple weeks) from the aggravating activity and periodic icing for the inflammation. While taking a few weeks off training is extremely frustrating and the last thing you may want to do, it is necessary to allow the overworked tissues time to repair. Unfortunately, however, without proper diagnosis and appropriate exercise modifications, shin splints may reappear as soon as you restart your training, putting you right back where you started.

Here are some helpful tips to prevent or get rid of shin splints: • Stretch your calves and shin muscles • Warm up before you begin your exercise • Strengthen your core and leg muscles • Check your training form • Use a foam roller on your calves and shin muscles Though shin splints can be a setback in your training, they are treatable. Seek out a provider who is trained to diagnose and treat the source of shin splints to get you back on your feet as quickly as possible. By treating the root cause through evaluation of muscle strength, imbalances and tension, along with running form, unique foot shape and footwear, you can beat the pesky pain keeping you from enjoying your workouts or getting out for a run during these beautiful summer months.

he beauty of summertime is that our schedules can relax a bit! With longer days we can be rejuvenated with more daylight time to do the things we love (hiking, boating, gardening). But, there can be one drawback to this relaxed lifestyle: People tend to let their good habits slip a bit.

Today I am going to teach you the simple steps that go into creating good habits so you can implement them this summer and not lose ground on bettering your health! Here are the three simple (and scientific) steps to creating a solid new habit! Step 1: Break that habit down into a smaller step. If drinking more water is a habit you want to maintain this summer, try breaking it down into a manageable size. For example, drinking a gallon of water can be a daunting task, but when you break the day into four sections (6 to 9am, 9am to noon, noon to 3pm, 3 to 6pm) and commit to drinking just 32 ounces every three hours, that task becomes more “doable.” Better yet, if you break that down into an hourly goal of 10 to 11 ounces every hour ... this you can do! Step 2: Create a “trigger” for these mini steps. It is key to create a trigger to remind you to do the task. Make sure the trigger is something that happens consistently without fail so there is no opportunity to forget. When your brain connects the good habit to a trigger, it will become an automatic response—and creating a new habit has just become that much easier. Basically, this takes the brain work out of the equation and serves as an automatic reminder. If you have a mini goal to drink 10 ounces of water every hour, simply set an alarm on your phone to remind you it’s time to take a swig (or 10). Other trigger examples can include: 10 pushups before bed (you go to bed every day); squats every time you brush your teeth; posture check every time your phone rings or a text comes in (whatever happens often throughout your day). Step 3: Reward yourself! This part is actually the most important step of creating a new habit—so do not skip it! Every time you perform the mini step, I want you to

“celebrate” your accomplishment with a little reward (not ice cream sundaes). Give yourself a fist bump, a happy dance, and air high five … whatever makes you feel happy! Something magical happens when you reward yourself for completing the habit. The magic is called dopamine! Dopamine is a powerful brain chemical that is produced when you do something that is exciting. Your brain loves dopamine and will want to do that “thing” again and again. Celebrating the completion of the mini step will make your brain excited for that next fist bump when your alarm goes off and you chug down that water. Soon these mini steps, triggers and dopamine hits will culminate into amazing, lasting healthy habits! Apply these steps to anything that you are either trying to create or a habit that you want to make sure you don’t slip up on throughout the dog days of summer. If you want to dive in a little deeper, some of my favorite books about habits are: Atomic Habits by James Clear, Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg, The 5-Second Rule by Mel Robbins. Missi Balison is a personal trainer, exercise physiologist and Certified Precision Nutrition coach.

D

id you know the word dementia is not a disease, but an umbrella term used to describe a group of symptoms caused by other conditions? Dementia is marked by the loss of cognitive function including remembering, reasoning and thinking. This includes behavioral abilities that can interfere with everyday activities such as language skills, memory, visual perception, problem-solving and self-management. While dementia is more common as people grow older, it is not a normal part of aging. The causes of dementia can vary depending on the types of brain changes that take place. There are over 400 types of dementia with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. Other types of dementia include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and frontotemporal disorders. Additionally, it’s common for people to have mixed dementia, which is a combination of two or more types of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for between 60 and 80 percent of all dementia cases, and it is marked by a progression of three stages: early stage, middle stage and late stage as symptoms worsen over time. The most common early symptom is difficulty remembering newly learned information. Vascular dementia is considered the second most common cause of dementia, accounting for 5 to 10 percent of cases, and is caused by conditions (such as stroke) that reduce or block blood flow to various areas of the brain, depriving them of nutrients and oxygen. Symptoms include confusion, disorientation, trouble speaking or understanding speech, difficulty walking or poor balance. Lewy body dementia is a term used to describe dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s disease dementia, and is progressive. Lewy body protein deposits form clumps inside the areas of the brain that control memory and movement, causing neurons to work less effectively, affecting the activity of certain brain chemicals, resulting in damage to the brain and a decline in ability; visual hallucinations is another symptom. Identifying Signs of Dementia It might start small—maybe your mom or dad forgets a birthday, or the cable bill goes unpaid for a month. It might seem like the type of thing that can slip anyone’s mind. But soon it progresses to more consistent forgetfulness. Maybe they go for a walk and

then can’t remember how to get home. Maybe their spending habits change, and suddenly more purchases are showing up at the door that they don’t remember buying. As their cognitive ability continues to deteriorate, they may struggle with getting dressed, or coping with new situations, or they may not recognize familiar faces. Before long, they receive a diagnosis that may not be surprising but is still devastating—Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. It’s an all-too-common reality for many seniors in America, as well as their loved ones. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over 6 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. As the baby boomer population continues to age, that number will certainly continue to rise. A diagnosis of a cognitive condition means that often the adult child has to assume the role of parent, as they care for their loved one who may not be able to live alone anymore. The demands of taking on that responsibility are stark—from worrying about nighttime wanderings to managing their finances, it might become a second full-time job on top of one they might already have. If you find yourself in that position, know that you’re not alone. The Alzheimer’s Association estimates there are over 11 million Americans currently providing unpaid care to people living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia; in other words, family members or spouses who have taken on the responsibility. NON-INVASIVE BODY CONTOURING

TIRED OF CRUNCHES AND SQUATS? NEW SCIENCE DELIVERS BODY SCULPTING WITHOUT THE GYM BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN

I

f hours at the gym and a restrictive diet have left you with sub-optimal results, you may want to consider EmSculpt Neo, a non-invasive device that delivers results equivalent to a 16-week workout program, all in just four short weeks. EmSculpt Neo launched in fall 2020 and is a next-generation, FDA-cleared device that combines enhanced HIFEM (high-intensity electromagnetic field) technology with radiofrequency (RF) energy in the form of heat to burn fat more effectively and build muscle. This results in more fat reduction and muscle growth, with clinical studies showing a 30 percent reduction in fat and 25 percent increase in muscle in the treated area. Below we break down frequently asked questions and all the details on the cuttingedge treatment.

preparation. During your treatment, a light tapping motion is done to release the lactic acid from the muscle, which results in less soreness than you would experience after a hard day at the gym.

What areas can EmSculpt Neo treat?

Who is a good candidate for Emsculpt Neo?

This nonsurgical treatment can tighten, tone and strengthen the large muscle groups of the abdomen and buttocks, as well as smaller muscle groups such as the calved, biceps and triceps.

Clients with a BMI up to 35—higher than most other nonsurgical body contouring treatment options—are good candidates. It is recommended that you schedule a consultation with your aesthetic provider to assess your goals and whether EmSculpt is right for you.

How many EmSculpt Neo sessions are required to see results? Four 30-minute treatments one week apart are recommended. The reduction in fat is permanent if your weight stays within 20 pounds of your treatment weight. A maintenance treatment is recommended every six months to maintain your muscle growth. You will begin to see results after your first treatment and continue to see improvement up to three months after your fourth treatment. Is there any downtime with EmSculpt Neo? EmSculpt Neo is a non-invasive procedure that requires no recovery time or any pre-treatment

What does EmSculpt Neo feel like? The treatment feels like an intense workout with a warming sensation in the treated area. You can lay down and relax during the treatment. How much does Emsculpt Neo cost? The cost of EmSculpt Neo varies from region and practice location. According to Real Self, an online directory for cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery, a series of four treatments averages $3,050.

Contraindications to EmSculpt Neo include metal or electronic implants in the treatment area, cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, implanted neurostimulators, drug pumps, malignant tumors, epilepsy or hemorrhagic conditions. Results are improved when combined with a healthy lifestyle that includes aerobic exercise and a balanced diet that is limited in refined sugars and processed foods.

KEEPING OUR WATERWAYS

CLEAN SMALL ACTIONS SEE BIG SOLUTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO OUR WATERWAYS BY RACHEL KELLY

W

e live on the beach. Sand, water, sunbathing, picnics and boating ... we’ve got it all. Every summer, or sometimes all year round, there’s a rush to the waterways. The boats, jet skis and kayaks all come out to play. Which is something wonderful! Living where we live, it’s a privilege. As locals, we get to enjoy the beauty of living in the pristine Pacific Northwest all year. It’s a well-kept secret (or is it?) that we live in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. But with the pristine waters, the open space and the snow-capped mountain ranges comes a certain weight of responsibility. Sometimes even frustration.

the threats and general disappointment, there’s actually a lot of ideas. Should we up the ante on punishments for litter? But then, who would enforce it? Maybe there should be a special litter police. Or, maybe we can be more proactive in speaking out when we see someone littering. But then ... there are just so many people. Can we really be in every park, by every waterway, to point our fingers at the litter bugs? Some people are just all for giving up. It’s destroyed, might as well stop trying! Ultimately, all this negativity doesn’t bring about solutions. Finger-pointing feels good, but it doesn't pick up trash. “If you love something, you take care of it,” says Weston.

“Where there’s people, there’s trash,” says Weston Cedarblom of Coeur D’Love, a conservation organization founded to help keep trash out of our waters. That’s the reality of living by major waterways: It’s the place to be. Locals and visitors alike come to appreciate the beauty. However, during the rush, often it’s the locals who are stuck with the backend of the pollution. It’s no wonder that we rate preservation to be of high importance around here. Pollution always ends up in the water, and here with our rivers, lakes and oceans, we can see it. It’s a shame to see something so lovely go to waste.

When it comes to the trash that often comes along with the summer season, the solution is simple. What you take in you pack out! While you’re at it, pick up a little extra. When it comes to the health of our towns, cities and waterways, there’s no time to play the blame game. We’re all in this together for the sake of what’s ours.

Comments in response to seeing trash in our waterways on social media include lots of negativity (go figure). In between 60 60

And that’s just it, isn’t it? This place is ours. At the end of the day, we love where we live. It’s up to us to take care of it, a euphemism that’s easier said than done. It might seem complicated, but Weston boils it down to two common commodities: time and money. If you don’t have money, then give your time. And if you don’t have time, give your

money. There are plenty of products out there whose profits go toward conservation. Coeur D’Love is just one such organization that sells products, as well as actively encouraging community participation. Giving one of two basic commodities is simple enough—and something that most people can get behind. The decisions that we make today don’t just encompass us. Today’s pollution is greater than our generation. Keeping our waterways clear ensures clean drinking water, fishing and recreation for future generations. Water is life. Without it, where would we be? To clean it up we need a game plan. This is why research-backed information to support keeping our watershed pure is so important. Research confirms a solid direction for preservation efforts, fuels advocacy, and highlights specific opportunities for community involvement. Nonprofits like the Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper provide that research, and are, not surprisingly, greatly reliant on their volunteers. Other city organizations, like the Tacoma Center for Urban Waters, also rely heavily on community support to keep our waterways clean. Just as water is connected, and knows no boundaries, so must our connections reach across barriers to ensure its preservation. The connection between waterways is also illustrative of its greater connection to all life. Water makes up 70 percent of the Earth’s surface for good reason; through it we are all connected. In fact, we can often determine the general health of our waterways by keeping tabs on the local wildlife. The suffering of wildlife is often a precursor to what we have to look forward to. If the wildlife is healthy, we have a future of health to look forward to, and vice versa. In the Puget Sound, salmon has steadily been declining at an ever-increasing rate. Salmon is a keystone species, which is another way of saying that it is an essential part of our ecosystem. All manner of life depends on the health of the Coho Salmon. Orca, birds of prey, bears and seals eat salmon. In turn, a vast number of other species suffer if those predators decline. And on and on and so forth. Without salmon, the whole of the land, and all the species living in it, die or suffer. This is why the decline of salmon is so alarming. Researchers from the Center for Urban Waters, the University of Washington, and the Washington State

University published in 2020’s Science magazine an unlikely culprit for the death of our salmon: car tires. Vehicle tires shed tiny particles of rubber, which get washed down the storm drains in the rain. Specifically, chemicals within the “dust” from the tires are causing harm to our waterways. These chemicals are, understandably, more present in major urban areas with more roadways. It’s the rubber and the chemicals from the tires that ultimately kill the coho salmon. Since many of Washington’s largest cities are on waterways, understanding the ins and outs of stormwater pollution is especially important. This ground-breaking research was only just published in 2020, but the idea of preventing pollution through the protection of our drains is not. “Prevention of stormwater pollution applies equally to all cities, regardless of whether they have a separated sewer and storm water system,” says Sarah Norber, an environmental specialist for the Center for Urban Waters. It’s not widely known that car tires specifically are a key part in stormwater pollution, but it is widely known that cars are major pollutants. In light of new and old research, using public forms of transport can go a long way in preserving our waterways. Other ways to preserve our waterways include riding bikes, fixing car leaks, using commercial car washes, limiting the use of pesticides and practicing the proper disposal of chemicals. All roads lead to water, and all drains eventually end up in our oceans. When we analyze the challenges facing our waterways, the problem can seem too overwhelming to solve. It’s a difficult prospect to take on the responsibility for our actions, as well as those of others. Anger takes precedence over that of service. The temptation to throw in the towel and move on is understandable. But we can find encouragement in our successes. What we do does matter, and what we’re doing together will work. Thea Foss Waterway is just one such example. Located in Tacoma, Washington, the once thriving Thea Foss Waterway was characterized in the 1980s by oil sheen, tar deposits and dilapidated buildings. The people and wildlife in the area were laboring under the consequences of over a century of environmentally insensitive practices. There was even a resurgence of the Black Plague in the area in the late 1970s. Though that particular example is interesting, it may be partially unrelated. Regardless, it does highlight just how bad things had gotten. So bad that in 1983, the Environmental Protection Agency identified the waterway to be a part of the larger Commencement Bay Superfund site. This means that Thea Foss Waterway was one of the most polluted places in the nation. The kind of contamination that Tacoma, and Washington as a whole, was tasked with cleaning up was staggering. As a major waterway connected to the ocean, this pollution was especially distressing. What’s more, the pollution was generational. Having spanned over a century, it seemed like things would continue to go along as they always had. If it were not for a deep respect and longing

for something better, things would have gone along as they always had. However, in 1994, the city came together to aggressively clean up the waterway. This involved hundreds of soil samples to identify exactly where the contamination was coming from and resulted in the addition of several new shoreline habitats. The city, businesses, grantees and community members from all over gave their time and money, a total of $105 million in funds. Keeping the storm water drains clear of contaminants was an especially important community effort that required very little money or time, and yet has resulted in big positive outcomes. Over a decade ago, in 2006, the cleanup was completed. It is the reason that locals can play, live and work safely by the waterway today. Wildlife to the once desolate area has returned. Since 2006, efforts have been focused on capping off other sources of pollution and keeping the waterway clean. It has absolutely paid off. Later this year, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to remove the waterway from its list of Superfund sites. It’s an understatement to say that the city is heaving a collective sigh of relief. The people, and the land, are at rest. 66

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

A little bit goes a long way when we’re talking about the whole of our community. It’s true that one person can’t fix the larger problem of pollution, but a lot of us can. The truth is that we’re everyday people, with everyday goals. We just want the opportunity to jump in the water when it’s hot, raise our kids someplace where they can enjoy the outdoors, and grow old in peace. Big projects take big people, who

have big connections, with big organizations, and big pockets. But those organizations, our home, is made up of us. Nothing will move, and nothing can change, if we’re not emboldened to do so. Taking responsibility for what we put down the drain is just one example of a small everyday act that makes significant changes to wildlife, neighborhoods, and the health of thousands of people.

We just want the opportunity to jump in the water when it’s hot, raise our kids someplace where they can enjoy the outdoors, and grow old in peace.

As a whole, we are individuals with limited means. Our acts of heroism are confined to the every day. The little acts, like picking up trash that we didn’t throw, or taking the bus, are acts of significance. The pride that we take in our waterways impacts the lives of those who live and breathe in our environment. The way that you personally approach the world affects the larger picture. When it comes to water, our decisions flow out to bigger and bigger places. The overall problem may seem overwhelming, but the solution is straightforward. If you see it, pick it up. If you drink it, keep it clean. It’s a mindset that, if it catches on, makes a big difference. But, it starts with you. It starts with us. When it comes to our waterways, we’re all connected.

Q&A

with Joe Lucero

G IG H A R BO R R E S I D E N T, F IRE LIEUTENANT AND ARMY V ETERAN by JILLIAN CHANDLER

J

oe Lucero grew up in the country, in a small, rural town in Texas— with real cowboys! When he and his wife Jenn married, they agreed that they wanted to provide the same experience for their children; for them to be able to experience a bit of Americana. “There are no cowboys in Gig Harbor, but real down-to-earth genuine folks,” smiles Joe. The couple moved to the area in July of 2001—this month marking their 20th anniversary of being a part of the wonderful Gig Harbor community. A US Army veteran, Joe has been a professional firefighter for 29 years, and is currently a lieutenant on an engine company that services the beautiful city of Bellevue. As someone with a heart for people and desire to help others, this is the role he was destined to play. Q. What inspired you to pursue this line of work? A. After my brother-in-law, a professional firefighter, told me about firefighting, I knew that was the job for me! Wearing a helmet and helping others in their time of need! I felt like I could make a difference in people’s lives in their time of distress. I hope to always be in the service of others. I was there for the innocent people of Korea, the Middle East, and now helping people in my own country. What greater reward than to possibly lay my life down for another! Q. Besides “putting out fires,” what emergencies/responsibilities do firefighters deal with on a regular basis?

70 70

| |

GIG GIG HARBOR HARBOR LIVING LIVING LOCAL LOCAL

A. We respond to a lot of medical emergencies. We treat and transport patients that range from mental emotional traumas to people who require an OR (Operating Room) and an entire staff of professional doctors and nurses. We are also involved in fire prevention activities to stay ahead and prevent any possibility of fires. Sometimes we just give someone a ride home who may be carrying a heavy load (car battery) or someone caught walking in a torrential downpour. One of my favorites is talking to young adults about how my profession can enhance their lives, like it did mine! It is an honorable profession, always giving back! Q. How would you describe the relationship between you and your comrades in the firehouse? A. I respect and admire the uniqueness of my team members. They have a heart for their profession, their families and the people they serve. They keep me moving in the right direction! Even though we are different in our own ways, we are much closer together than we are apart. My team members are awesome, and I am proud to be serving alongside them. Q. Is there any one experience as a firefighter that stands out that you will never forget? A. One of my first calls, a 3-year-old boy who died from choking on a piece of apple. We worked hard at saving his life, but he did not make it. I remember riding in the back of the engine watching kids play and

people living their lives, daily unchanged routines, clueless to the death of a child. We carry these kinds of tragedies with us, the tragic events we deal with that go unnoticed, unknown to the rest of the world. Q. Prior to becoming a firefighter, you served in the military. Can you share more about this with our readers? Did your time serving the country help prepare you for your role as a firefighter? A. I served my country for four years in the US Army. I served at Ft. Lewis, now JBLM. I helped fight the Yellowstone fires, was based and ran patrols on the demilitarized zone in South Korea, and served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm with the 82 Airborne Division, America’s Guard of Honor based out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, as a paratrooper. I achieved the rank of Sergeant in a bit over two years and loved being on call and on mission for the entire world. The fire service is similar but in other ways nothing like the military. The military life is difficult, extremely difficult! Difficult on you personally, your family and your friendships. It’s hard on anything that resembles relationships. But, it is also there that I learned what it’s like to serve along brothers willing to give their life for you and for others. I never feared death; sounds weird, but it’s true. You just focused on the mission, always. Helping innocent souls live lives just like you and me back stateside. There are good people there too. Innocent, hardworking families, just striving to make the best for their families. I have never experienced that kind of camaraderie I did with soldiers I served with. The men and women in the fire service are a close second. Q. As July marks Independence Day, what are you most thankful for when it comes to our county’s freedoms you have fought for? A. The Fourth of July is my favorite holiday! I love being free and desire that for all humans on the planet! I am thankful my parents raised me to love God and my country! I hope I have instilled that in my children. Our country is awesome despite the mistakes of our past and present. It is one of the only countries on the planet that people will endure horrible experiences to get into and, unfortunately, a country that the unfree world is trying to tear down! It’s the place where freedom from color, race, gender, religious beliefs and endless opportunity can be achieved. I believe in what our Founding Fathers believed when they wrote the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident that ALL men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Q. When you’re not working, how might those in the community find you spending your time? A. I spend my time with my family and friends. I have recently been involved with Mission work overseas that is challenging, rewarding and, at times, dangerous. It’s what I hope to continue doing in foreign countries. I love adventure and excitement. I hope to take the skills I have learned in the military and the fire service and make the world a little better place. It all starts at home. I love God, my family, my profession and my country.

Dedicated to providing hope and healing to those who served in the military, Gig Harbor’s Permission to Start Dreaming (PTSD) Foundation focuses on enhancing the mind, body and spirits of veterans and their families. Serving veterans and first responders throughout the Pacific Northwest, they strive to provide effective, long-term solutions for growth and overcoming post-traumatic stress. Born out of Leslie Mayne’s grief from losing her son Kyle to an overdose following treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress, the organization serves to honor Kyle’s memory and service as an army veteran. The foundation seeks better outcomes for veterans of today and the future through bringing hope, peace and healing from the past. “We believe they should be provided the very best programs that help restore their lives and overcome the trauma they face while serving their country and communities,” the organization states. They offer strength-based programs including post-traumatic growth workshops and retreat, designed to help every veteran, first responder and family member live a fulfilled life. The Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation holds monthly meetings to provide an inclusive environment that fosters

connection through sharing of experiences and working through trauma. The facilitated huddles are designed to cultivate a positive growth mindset while building community. They meet for an informal dinner on the last Wednesday every month in Gig Harbor, with plans to expand and reach more locations. They offer several annual events, including Race for a Soldier, and Pull for a Soldier, a competitive trap shoot event in partnership with the Gig Harbor Sportsman Club. Community members interested in signing up to run, compete, or volunteer with the organization can visit PTSDFoundation.org. Growing Veterans “A place for growing food, community, and each other,” the Growing Veterans

Nonprofit Farm was established in 2012 and seeks to break down the feeling of isolation experienced by so many veterans. Founded by a combat-wounded USMC veteran and mental health counselor turned farmer, Growing Veterans uses organic farming as a catalyst for making an impact on the health of veterans around the region and around the world. Their holistic approach is grounded in camaraderie, authentic connections and enhancing mental health through time in nature. The food growth comes from an organic farm located in Lynden, Washington, and an outpost farm on Greenback Whidbey Island, hosting volunteers three days a week and donating a majority of the food grown to the Bellingham Food Bank and North Whidbey Help House. Their organic hops, peppers, summer vegetables and more can be sold at wholesale prices for other businesses, garnering further support for their mission. Volunteers on the farm receive “Dirt Therapy,” based on the belief that feeling soil on your hands while hearing a friendly voice delivers a positive experience. The farms also deliver Peer Support Training to staff members and interns, where they are taught how to be a support system to the veterans they serve. 76

The organization’s community growth occurs through building connections for veterans. Working in partnership with other local businesses, groups and individuals throughout the region, Growing Veterans seeks to strengthen the bridge between veteran and civilian communities with outreach events, farm tours, collaborations and volunteer days. Growing Veterans takes pride in the variety of veterans and civilians alike who come together on the farm, “to simply be with one another, share stories, laugh, and interact in a way that is centered on growing things with our hands rather than destroying.” To get connected or get involved, visit GrowingVeterans.org. VFW 1263 Located in Renton, the VFW Post 1263 is a center for military and veteran outreach that supports service members from active duty, through discharge and after their return. They welcome both veterans and active service members to take part in their programs, available resources and veteran outreach, especially aiming to provide continued support and community for veterans suffering from PTSD. “There has never been a more important time to take a stand and do something to support our veterans,” the organization states in their mission to fight against the number of veterans lost to suicide. Part of their veteran outreach program includes their “Buddy-Buddy” program, connecting veterans through shared trauma and encouraging private, yet open, discussions to talk through their experiences. The VFW 1263 offers a long list of benefits and services for veterans, including health-care benefits, long-term care, and family support. Because their ultimate goal is to keep veterans from feeling alone and to help those who are struggling, the VFW maintains a veteran crisis hotline available through phone, text and online chat at VeteransCrisisLine. net. More information on Post 1263 and its resources can be found at VFW1263.org. Many of the veterans who have fought for our freedoms don’t stop fighting after they return home. The organizations that honor and serve our veterans recognize the weight of their service and aim to give back through values rooted in community and inclusion. On this month’s holiday and beyond, veterans can be celebrated through these local organizations offering opportunities and support for those who sacrificed so much in the fight for our country’s freedom.

Fun on the

'thank you' SAYING

1

Ways to show ser vice men and women you care by Rachel Kelly

PUBLIC RECOGNITION. Our service men and women give a lot of themselves, and often see the ugliest sides of our communities. They do this so that we can flourish in our everyday lives. So as you see them go about their everyday life, which often involves many late nights, consider taking a moment to acknowledge all that they do. Reminding them that what they do and what they’ve done is worthwhile, by simply pausing in whatever you’re doing to say, “Thank you.” Reminding them that they are seen.

ACTS OF KINDNESS. They may not have literal groceries that they need help with, but the point is that those who serve in our communities have regular chores and lives that they have to attend to. Often it’s those regular everyday needs that suffer when they take time to help with the more pressing or urgent needs within our community. Because of their often pressing schedules, they may struggle with taking the time to sit down with their families. Or, they may not have had a chance to enjoy a solid meal. Whatever it is, it’s the little things that count. If you personally know someone who does or has served, consider stepping in to help with something that they haven’t had the time to do themselves. Buy them a healthy lunch, step in to make them a solid meal, or help their families with house maintenance.

3 4 5 LENDING AN EAR.

Good friends are like a healing salve, especially when dealing with a lot of stress. Service men and women often spend a lot of time listening to others, and so it is nice if someone is interested in hearing how they are. Whether that means taking a moment to have a chat with the police officer on their late-night shift, or asking your regular doctor about their day. If you work in a clerical or in a therapeutic capacity, your advice and support may be especially helpful. We all need to be heard and seen, even the strongest of us.

TICKETS TO THE OUTDOORS. Being out in nature is known to have a rejuvenating and curative effect, especially here in the Northwest. This year consider supporting them as they get some time out of doors, whether that means lending them your kayak or buying their ticket to a mud run. If you teach yoga, consider offering your services for free to your local firehouse. Buying gift cards for relaxing physical activity, or simply including them in non-work based community activities, goes a long way.

FINDING SOMETHING THEY’VE MISSED.

Often, those who serve put aside things they love to do for what needs to be done. They are often on call, which means that they often miss out. As you think of ways to show your appreciation, think of something that they might have missed out on this year. As sports venues and events open up all over the state, consider buying them a ticket to see a comedian or hear a musician. Perhaps all that they’ve missed this year is time to engage in their favorite hobby. For those who serve, there’s always something.

SURPRISE THEM WITH A NOTE. As summer is here, and school is out, get the kids involved! Have your 3-year-old draw or paint a picture, while the older kids draft notes filled with words of encouragement and thankfulness to those first responders in our community. Have them help bake up a batch of goodies (or buy some from your favorite local bakery) , package them up nicely with the notes and pictures attached, and drop them off at your local firehouse or police station. This simple, thoughtful gesture is sure to brighten their day and remind them of the important role they play in our community— and that they are appreciated.

enturing out on an international trip can be a bit intimidating amid the continuing pandemic, with testing requirements and each destination with its own rules. Once I received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and waited the requisite two weeks, I was ready to travel. I chose Jamaica for this trip due to their Controlled Entry Program Protocols. For tourists, the Government of Jamaica has established resilient corridors. You choose an approved accommodation within the corridor and then you can visit COVID-19 approved protocol-compliant attractions within the “Corridor.” There is an extensive set of measures to ensure health safety that approved accommodations and attractions have all received training on. These are a strictly ensured set of protocols and standards. The most important thing to know as a visitor is you must remain in the Resilient Corridor during your stay at your designated accommodation. You may leave your resort to visit any tourist attraction that is certified by the Jamaica Tourist Board to be a COVID-19 Resilient licensed tourist attraction. Pre-travel Prior to your travels, get familiar with the travel requirements at the official Visit Jamaica website. When I traveled in May, seven days prior to travel you are required to fill out an online travel authorization form, which is instantly approved, and you must print and bring it with

A MORE ISOLATED RESORT. WHEN SELECTING A PLACE TO STAY, MAKE SURE YOUR RESORT OFFERS PLENTY OF AMENITIES—SINCE YOU WILL BE SPENDING MOST OF YOUR TIME ON THE RESORT.

you to Jamaica. You must have travel insurance which covers medical expenses. Some resorts include this coverage. You must also have a COVID-19 test done no earlier than 72 hours prior to your flight. There is a calculator on their website to determine when you can take it. It is important to check back frequently as requirements do change. Currently a negative COVID-19 test is required to return to the United States. When making your travel arrangements, plan how you will get this test. Many resorts offer COVID-19 tests onsite. Insider Tips: Book Club Mobay. This service has a representative who will greet you at the gate when you arrive in Jamaica and whisk you through expedited lines through security. Well worth the expense, especially if multiple planes arrive. You can also book it for departure, in which you’ll have access to a lounge with food and beverages while waiting for your plane to depart. Travel I found the best way to maximize your time in Jamaica is to take a red-eye flight from Seattle arriving at an East Coast hub city such as Atlanta or Miami, and then get on the first flight to Jamaica. With all-inclusive resorts, you pay the same rate whether you arrive in the morning or late in the evening. It is better to arrive early so you can enjoy all the meals and activities you paid for. For my trip we splurged on First Class and felt it was well worth it—especially as on both legs of our trip the plane was fully booked. Masks are still required in airports and on the airplane. Upon arrival in Jamaica, we were met by the Club Mobay representative. Your temperature will be taken at the first screening point. The Club Mobay representative escorts you through the whole process, even helping with your luggage. Once through security, she escorted us to the Sandals Lounge. You also have the option to go to the Club Mobay arrival lounge to wait for transportation to the resort you are staying at.

The Specifics Sandals South Coast - Sandals.com/south-coast Travel Requirements for Jamaica - VisitJamaica.com/travelauthorization Club Mobay - VIPAttractions.com/mobay-info

Sandals South Coast I chose Sandals South Coast for our visit because it is located near a nature preserve and is the only hotel on the beach in this area. It is about a 90-minute drive from Montego Bay but well worth the long drive. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it felt safer to be at a more isolated resort. When selecting a place to stay, make sure your resort offers plenty of amenities— since you will be spending most of your time on the resort. I was familiar with the Sandals Brand, having stayed at other properties before. When they say all-inclusive, it really is! There are nine restaurants, multiple bars, and lots of great activities and a worldclass spa. There’s even scuba diving! The only thing you spend money on is shopping, spa treatments and any of the resort excursions. To make the most of a Sandals’ vacation, spend time on the website and review everything that is included. There are 21 different types of rooms at Sandals South Coast within three categories: Luxury, Club and Butler. All categories have access to all the resort has to offer, but some do have more perks. We opted for the new “South Seas Swim-up Rondoval Butler Suite with Private Pool Sanctuary” and then fulfilled a bucket list item for me by staying in an “Over the Water Butler Honeymoon Bungalow” for one night. These stay fully booked, and we lucked out with one night being available. Our Rondoval suite was so luxurious. These round cottages sit amidst secluded lush gardens surrounded by a river pool. The deck also had a private plunge pool with a waterfall that was so relaxing. It was so nice when staying on a large resort to have this quiet space to retreat to. This trip truly was a wonderful escape from all that 2020 threw at us. The tranquil ocean breezes, blue green Caribbean waters and white sandy beaches had my husband and I relaxed in no time. One of the things I love about the Sandals brand is the staff. They are warm and welcoming, providing incredible service. The butler experience was worth the extra expense. From the reserved lounge chairs by the pool or beach with coolers of beverages to being picked up each night and escorted to dinner, I loved being spoiled. I felt very safe with the health and safety protocols at Sandals. The company provides COVID-19 tests a few days prior to your departure as well as the mandatory travel insurance. Everything was spotlessly clean, the staff all wore masks, and the use of hand sanitizer was required when entering public spaces. 86

The Over the Water Bungalow Wow! What an incredible experience. This luxury retreat sits at the far end of the resort with a private deck overlooking the sea. The sunset views were stunning. Once we checked into this room we didn’t leave until the next morning! The enhanced room service for these exclusive suites even had filet mignon on it. The deck was fully equipped with loungers, an outdoor shower and bathtub, as well as a box full of snorkel gear and lifejackets. Each bungalow also has a beach cabana. We booked a candlelight dinner, which we had served on the deck while watching the sunset. So romantic and a great way to end our Jamaica getaway to Sandals South Coast. Insider Tips: There are official Facebook groups for each Sandals resort, and it is a wealth of information from guests who have stayed at the resorts, with Sandals providing moderators to ensure the information is correct. It had been almost 10 years since my last visit to the Caribbean, and I had forgotten how truly relaxing a beach vacation is. It was the perfect antidote to 2020. We booked a visit to Sandals in Barbados for next year. If you reserve at the resort, you receive a 10 to 12 percent discount on your next visit. Sandals also offers military and first responders a 10 percent discount, which can be combined with other discounts.

Original Tacoma Narrows Bridge

I

t was November 23, 1938, when construction began on the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge. It would open to the public less than two years later—on July 1, 1940; this month marking its 81st anniversary. Much more flexible, lighter and smaller than other bridges built during that time, it was the thirdlongest suspension bridge in the world with a main span of 2,800 feet (the George Washington Bridge being the longest, followed by the Golden Gate Bridge). Nicknamed the Galloping Gertie due to its vertical movement during windy conditions, these oscillations would ultimately lead to its demise within just four months of operating. Fortunately, no humans perished, though Tubby, a three-legged cocker spaniel, passed away as a result of the car he was in falling from the bridge.

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO

94

|

Explore by Water

Have a Ball

Whether by sail, powerboat, kayak, SUP or electric boat, much of the city’s charm and natural wonders are best seen from the water.

Entertainment options abound, from Galaxy’s IMAX theaters or arcade games, duckpin bowling and a laser tag venue at Ocean5 to creative art classes with AR Workshop.

Support Local

Make Friends

Gig Harbor’s independent boutiques, artists and specialty shops dot the harbor—visits to the Westside and Uptown business districts are a fun excursion as well.

Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.

Tip a Glass

Take a Look Back

Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.

Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.

Share a Plate

Tee Up

Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks.

Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club.

Walk on the Wild Side

Capture the Moment

Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.

In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

HOW ABOUT A

CIDER?

GET AN EARLY TASTE OF CIDER SWIG BY COLIN ANDERSON

C

ider Swig is an event many look forward to—with tickets selling out—each and every year. With the ongoing challenges of large gatherings and the logistics of organizing an event with thousands of attendees, it was decided that this year’s Cider Swig would be moved back a bit. If all goes to plan, the eighth annual event will happen on September 25, but if you simply can’t wait that long, they’ve got something to quench your thirst in the meantime. Summer Swig will give event fans a literal taste of the Cider Swig, but in a to-go setting. Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 10, and Sunday, July 11. Summer Swig will include all the tasty ciders you’ve grown to love but in a to-go kit for you to enjoy wherever you would like. There are three different kits available: Swig Micro Kit with seven cans/bottles ($45); Meso Taster Kit, 10 cans/bottles ($80); and the Drinkin’ with Kin Macro Kit, which includes 13 cans/bottles ($130). Each comes with two commemorative 9-ounce stemless glasses

and some small items from participating cideries. These aren’t just tasters either, as “samples” will be in the form of 12-ounce can, or 16.9-ounce and 22-ounce bottles. You’ll get to try from some of the best the Pacific Northwest has to offer, and you might even find a surprise or two with each kit. A great barbecue sandwich from BBQ2U can also be added on to complement your tastings. You’ll find the kits ready for pickup at the Uptown Gig Harbor Home Goods Parking Lot. Volunteers onsite will then bring you your kit, and you’ll be all set! Not only do you get a wonderful array of regional ciders, but you are also helping out your local community. Proceeds benefit several grant programs, which provide area schools and organizations within the KGI watershed assistance for projects focused on water quality, environmental education, watershed health, and conservation and restoration activities. You can purchase your to-go kits at CiderSwig.org. Follow them on social media for all the latest news.
