Time for a fresh Coat ?

GIVE NEW LIFE TO AN OLD PIECE WITH PAINT BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, INTERIOR DESIGNER

S

ometimes the best option for creating something new is by using something old or recreating something that we already have. One of my favorite ways to give something new life is by giving it a coat of paint. I have painted cabinetry, furniture and even textiles in this way, and have nearly always been happy with the results. My dad was a very talented carpenter and craftsman, and one thing that he always stressed was using the right tool for the job. This is especially true with paint. To try to paint something like a table or chair using wall paint is just setting yourself up for failure. It doesn’t have the right consistency and staying power—and will not last. (Read on to find out which paints I’ve had the best luck with!) Dad also stressed the importance of proper preparation for any project. For painting furniture, this means taking off any upholstered parts, such as seat pads, and cleaning the wood

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

thoroughly with a product like TSP, which removes any residual grease or other buildup that would otherwise affect the paint adherence. Primer is optional for most pieces, depending on the paint, so be sure to read directions. For cabinetry, the prep phase is a little more involved. It’s not fun, but you must remove the doors, drawers and any hardware, including hinges. Use the TSP (no need to strip surfaces with a solvent), then sand with a fine-grit sandpaper, making sure the surface is dust-free by wiping with a clean microfiber or cotton cloth. Next, even if the paint you have chosen says that primer is not required, add a coat of primer anyway. Make sure your primer coat somewhat matches the tone of the paint you are using. If you are painting your cabinets a fresh white, use white primer; if your paint is darker, use gray. I like Kilz or Zinsser primer brands, available at home improvement or paint stores. Here is where things get a little tricky. Paint selection for your

Give something new life by giving it a coat of paint. project is key. There are a variety of alternative “furniture” paints out there on the market. I have used many of them— including the expensive and, in my opinion, overrated Annie Sloane paints from England; and the ones I’ve had the best luck with include General Finishes Milk paint, available online in a variety of colors, and their entire line of topcoats, which are amazing. I especially love their matte finish topcoat, which has very little sheen to it but does an amazing job of protecting any painted surface. I have also had great luck with Dixie Belle’s line of paints. Home Depot sells a Behr brand of chalk paint that I used to paint my piano. Though the texture was not nearly as good as the Dixie Belle, it can be tinted to match any color in the store, and I wanted the piano to match my wall color, which it does, but not without a lot of work (five coats!).

Should you choose to go out on a limb and paint upholstery, please note that chalk paint is your best option for this. But you must water it down substantially! I used the aforementioned Annie Sloane brand of paint to do this, and I watered it down by 50 percent, and then applied the paint in thin coats. This worked but of course completely changed the texture of the fabric. The piece wasn’t nearly as comfortable as it had been pre-painting, so it eventually found its way out of our home and into the donation center. That said, some projects are just destined not to be as great as we see them in our mind’s eye. For something like cabinetry or heirloom pianos, where failure is not an option, please be sure you use the prep methods outlined above and do purchase the right products for the job to avoid any headaches or frustrations.

Lifting You Up or Putting You Down C A N Y O U R E A L LY D I V O R C E W I T H D I G N I T Y ?

“D

By Felicia Soleil, Attorney/Mediator

ignity” and “Divorce.” Two words you might not expect to be used together. Is it really possible to get divorced with your dignity intact?

Webster’s defines dignity as “the quality of being worthy, honored, respected.” I suggest that you not only hope to be treated as such by your soon-to-be former intimate partner, but also by the process in which you participate and the professionals you employ to assist you through that process. Let’s start with process options to obtain a divorce. You can elect to work through a process together using a neutral professional in mediation or using two collaboratively trained lawyers in collaborative law. Or you can hire lawyers and negotiate your issues without ever being in the same room together with your spouse. What matters is how you feel you are treated by all the players. Here’s what dignity can look like in mediation. You and your spouse meet with a trained professional who warmly welcomes you, provides you positive encouragement for the fact that you are agreeing to face a difficult situation together, makes you feel at ease and less anxious and overwhelmed. The mediator clearly spells out the steps you will need to take from start to finish, lets you know what potential challenges you can anticipate and provides reassurance that everything can be resolved. Dignity is apparent in collaborative law when each attorney acknowledges the other party’s needs and provides validation to both parties’ perspectives. Also, the attorneys treat each other with respect and demonstrate how to disagree and share different perspectives and legal opinions with collegial discourse. When opting for two independent attorneys outside of a joint meeting-based process, dignity can be applied in the tone of correspondence between both attorneys with regard to how they

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

refer to each party, and in legal pleadings and in the courtroom, where the attorneys agree to not personally disparage each other or their opposing party. They focus on the legal issues and options for generating solutions, even if a solution has to be involving the court, but avoid personalizing the case. Family law is ripe for disparaging personalization. It is often up to the professionals to set the tone when faced with parties going through an emotionally difficult transition in their personal lives. However, you can be instrumental in setting the tone if you feel your chosen professionals are crossing the line into disrespectful treatment of you or your spouse. On several occasions, I have had new clients come to me after discharging a prior professional because they were uncomfortable with that professional’s demeanor and “strategy.” There has already been enough hurt to go around, and they don’t want the professionals to add to it. They are often worn down and want to get through it with their collective dignities intact. Clients often initially come in stating things like, “We want to remain friends, we just don’t know how to do this,” or “We don’t want the process to make things worse. We’re not ready to be friends yet, but we want each of us to be treated with dignity while we separate.” Looking into your post-divorce future, you probably won’t remember the details of the outcome, but you will most likely remember how you were treated by the process and the professionals you chose as your guides. Dignity matters. Felicia Soleil is a family law attorney and mediator. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning for them and their families so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. A-FRAME HOMES Be aware of the potential hazards they can cause By Nicole Betcher, Owner, SERVPRO of Gig Harbor/North Tacoma

I

n my line of work, we see smoke and fire damages frequently. At one point we had two jobs with the same style home— an A-frame. What’s an A-frame-style home? Picture a capital A. Now put a door on it and ta-da! That’s an A-frame-style home. Sometimes they are cabins and sometimes they are permanent homes. Not every home is a perfect layout, nor can they be preventive of any type of damage. Here are some things to be aware of with an A-frame home: • The roof can be an energy siphon if it is not properly insulated. • It is an expensive roof replacement. • It can be susceptible to termite damage due to the wooden framing. • They are not built to withstand strong winds. Let’s look at the above in a little more detail. One, it can be an energy siphon. What does this mean? When you need to heat your home, it could be a continuous stream of heat that escapes through the roof and walls. It’s escaping while you’re trying to heat your home, resulting in you paying more in your heating bill. It can be a costly roof replacement when the time comes. Consider it. The roof doesn’t really expand in different directions; it juts down at a steep angle. This could take more time and care when the roofers are replacing it. Termites. One of their food resources is wood. The A-frame home is mainly constructed by wood. This could be a future problem if you’re

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

26

A-frame isn’t taken good care of or if it is a vacation home and not occupied every day— another reminder of how important it is to check the perimeter of your home monthly if not seasonally. Up here in the Northwest, we are not always prepared for strong gusts of winds. Down in Southern California they have consistent Santa Ana winds, and they can sustain those on a regular basis. In the Pacific Northwest, we have dense tree coverage, and when we get strong winds from Alaska, we suffer multiple power outages. I look at the A-frame home as two playing cards leaning against each other and if someone were to blow on them how long it would take for it to fall. The roof line is a large surface area for that wind to hit, meaning it could be a potential hazard to fall in on itself. If you love an A-frame-style home, here are some pro points for having one: • Steep sloped roofs make snow fall off easier for winter cabins. • They are affordable. • They are quick to construct. They have prefabricated kits that you can build yourself. • They are good for minimalists. Whether you are for or against an A-frame home, you have some very handy information in case you should need to know. If ever you run into any structural damages (wind, snow, water, fire, etc.), please call a restoration specialist, and they can help you with your emergency needs.

GI G H A RB O R ANNUAL FUNDRAISER A FOOD-FILLED FUN TIME By Co lin Anderso n

I

t’s not often that most of us need an excuse to eat, but if you do want to feel good about expanding your waistline a little, be sure to attend the 29th annual Taste of Gig Harbor. Not only does the event bring together many of your favorite area restaurants and chefs, but proceeds from the event go to help the local Gig Harbor Rotary Club continue its many projects that improve areas all throughout the city.

As you mingle about the delicious food and drink offerings, you can check out the silent auction items up for bidding, generously donated by local businesses, rotary members and community members. There will also be an exciting live auction paddle raise featuring anything from vacations and stay-and-play packages to hard-to-come-by event tickets and one-of-a-kind experiences. While everyone is welcome, state law dictates that this event is invitation only. If you know a rotary member, you’ll want to reach out to them for an invitation; otherwise, visit TasteofGigHarbor.com for ticket information. The Rotary is currently accepting donations for live and silent auctions, and sponsorships are also still available. Happy dining!

This year’s taste will be held on Saturday, March 14, at the Point Fosdick Antique Airplane Hangar (located at 1108 26th Avenue NW). Festivities begin at 5:30pm and are scheduled to run until about 10pm. Once inside you’ll find numerous booths, each offering a taste of their favorite menu item or perhaps something special they’ve cooked up just for this event. Mexican, Asian, barbecue, seafood and more will be paired up with local and regional wines, beers and spirits.

n February 7, the local Gig Harbor Rotary clubs recognized members of the community that exemplified the rotary club ideal of “service before self.”

NOMINEES ARE CHOSEN FOR THEIR RECKLESS ATTITUDE TOWARD GIVING; THEY ARE PEOPLE WHO DEVOTE A LARGE PART OF THEIR PERSONAL TIME AND EFFORT TOWARD THEIR VENTURE OF CHOICE.

Each individual club nominated non-rotary members who personify a devotion to others before self. Nominees are chosen for their reckless attitude toward giving; they are people who devote a large part of their personal time and effort toward their venture of choice. Nominees are also capable of becoming a Paul Harris Fellow through donations made in their honor to the Rotary Foundation. This year the North, Morning and Midday Rotary clubs each presented a nominee. From the North Club, Ken Kieffer; from the Morning Rotary, Tom Taylor; and from the Midday Rotary, Doctor Sherwin Shinn. Ken Kieffer is distinguished by his service to the Make A Wish Foundation, having fulfilled over 400 wishes to date. He also volunteers for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), Breast Cancer Awareness,

Special Olympics, Tibetan Nuns Project, the Lupus Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, is a volunteer for hospice care, and can be seen in Romania (if you happen to be there) assisting at an orphanage. There’s more, but I’ve run out of breath! It may seem like a lot, but Ken continues to be undaunted. “I think, ‘What if this was my child or grandchild? What would I do?’” says Ken. He truly embodies the “golden rule.” When asked as to his inspiration for his (now) fulltime job as a volunteer, Ken refers to the candle he keeps in his car. It’s from his daughter’s wedding. He looks at it every time he gets in and is reminded that “it is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.” Ken is out to light that candle. Tom Taylor is distinguished by his fierce dedication to developing programs toward a healthy community through the nine community-wide YMCAs. In Gig Harbor alone, the YMCA boasts of 21,000 members, supporting 7,000 non-members beyond that. When Tom first joined the YMCA back in 1971, there were only 500 members. That number quickly exploded to 10,000 once the YMCA on Pearl street was built. Tom

is proud of the Y’s dedication to include all members of the community regardless of age, religion, race, income or social status. If you can make it to the Y, you’re welcome. Within the Y there are a variety of programs meant to provide relief and social support, such as the Shower Pass. The Shower Pass grants the use of the gym showers to anyone in the community, including the homeless. This allows for a greater chance of getting a job and also contributes to the overall health of all community individuals. Community support, however, doesn’t stop at the Y building. The Gig Harbor YMCA also provides before-and after-school care for working parents throughout the Peninsula and has created the YMCA Youth Legislature. Tom is currently excited for an aggressive project to increase community sports facilities. The YMCA has partnered with the city to build two community soccer fields with artificial turf. Tom’s inspiration? For his life to be a benefit to the world, to give something to future generations. To build a legacy for a better community. Lastly, Doctor Sherwin Shinn is distinguished by his collaboration of a nonprofit called World Wide Smiles. The inspiration for World Wide Smiles came from the fulfillment of a childhood dream: Sherwin went to the Himalayas. Sherwin’s last day of vacation was interrupted by the cry of a child; it was unusual enough to elicit his investigation. What

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

he found was a little girl swollen from temple to armpit from a tooth infection. It became immediately apparent to Sherwin that the girl would die if left untreated. He immediately had her transported 2,000 feet up the mountain to the nearest medical facility. Faced with inadequate tools, no running water and minimal sanitation, Dr. Shinn performed the removal of the infected teeth with his pocket knife. Thankfully there was anesthesia. It was this experience that ignited Sherwin Shinn’s passion for preventive care. He would come back to the Himalayas several times; partnering with schools to pass out toothbrushes and address tooth health. It wasn’t long after that he was asked to go to other countries as well. The effort eventually expanded to become its own nonprofit. Today, the nonprofit establishes clinics all over the world, enriching the local economy by training and equipping locals for the work. Sherwin’s inspiration comes not only from kids who have the opportunity to grow up because of the efforts of the nonprofit, but from his personal passion for enhancing the lives of others. Dentistry is his vehicle for giving unconditionally. Looking at each nominee individually, a pattern emerges: giving without condition. The rotary nominates its community members because they are personally inspired and challenged by what they see happening. I think it’s safe to say that it’s inspiring for us all.

Specializing in skin rejuvenation, injections and skin care, Laura Jane Brougher and Serina Jones recently introduced Gig Harbor Aesthetics to the local community. Opening its doors in January 2020, Laura Jane, RN and Serina, LME bring years of experience in their respective fields, providing their clients the best in aesthetics services. An experienced master aesthetician, Serina provides services including laser and skin rejuvenation, fractional resurfacing, dermaplaning, microneedling, microblading and crafted therapeutic facials. She works alongside one of the top plastic surgeons in the nation, where she has had advanced and extensive laser training. “I love treating skin because filters don’t follow you around in real life. I’ve created some of the most amazing combination therapy skin procedures that deliver physical change to the skin,” says Serina. “Her 20 years of working in high profile medical aesthetic clinics and loving touch is what makes her so special,” smiles Laura Jane. “When it comes to having your face treated, having the best and most experienced is important.” Laura Jane, is an advanced injector with 15-plus years of experience, previously working for a plastic surgeon and a women’s clinic. “What inspired me to get into aesthetics was wanting to have beautiful skin,” she says. “I have been injecting and performing skin rejuvenation for almost 16 years and am currently focusing mostly on injecting in our new practice.” She and Serina are joined by Medical Director Erin Anderson, ARNP.

The team is passionate about the work they do and believe that helping someone feel confident about themselves is incredibly fulfilling. “What is most rewarding is getting super happy client feedback,” says Laura Jane. “They are so excited and feeling confident with their healthy skin and fresher appearance.” Serina adds, “Everyone wants to feel beautiful in their own skin, and we believe it’s possible for every single person to feel that way.” Products used at the clinic include Botox and Dysport for dynamic wrinkle softening, Restylane for dermal fillers and Juvederm portfolios. The office will soon be offering Coolsculpting, a non-invasive procedure for targeting stubborn fat areas of the body. In addition, they currently offer product lines by ZO Skin Health, IS Clinical and Elta MD sun protection, with more to come! “We only sell products that have high quality performance ingredients and are top of the line in the industry,” affirms Laura Jane. She adds that she sees herself as an artist, with a passion for keeping each and every client looking natural. “I feel that most clients want a more refreshed look and healthy skin. I strongly feel a natural-looking enhancement is paramount,” affirms Laura Jane. “I also believe that everyone is on a different budget, so making a plan for treatment now— and long term—is a great way to achieve results that fit the budget.”

Many of her clients call her “the face angel” because she encourages their dreams and inspires positivity. Serina has been named the “skin guru” in the industry—and her work shows it. Her work on correcting sun damage has been featured in training modules for top laser companies around the world. She provides every client with a customized treatment plan. You can feel how proud and passionate she is when she talks to anyone about their skin. As we said goodbye, Serina excitedly said, “Give us all the faces!” which perfectly describes her immense passion for the craft. Laura Jane and her husband have lived in Gig Harbor for almost 30 years, raising their two children here. "It’s been my dream to open an aesthetics clinic in the harbor," Laura Jane smiles. Serina, her husband and their two young children have called Gig Harbor home for the past two years. She loves to travel, ski, cook and a great glass of wine. Laura Jane and Serina are excited to be part of the Gig Harbor business community and provide their expertise in skin rejuvenation, injections and skin care to their clients at Gig Harbor Aesthetics. T

he Paradise Theatre company has resembled a band of gypsies since it first presented the musical “West Side Story” with a live orchestra in the open-air amphitheater on Peacock Hill in 2000. After staging musicals, comedies and dramas for almost two decades, the nonprofit theater company could have its final encore this summer—and as of press time, event sooner—despite their continuous efforts to find a permanent location to call home. The current fate of Paradise Theatre is still yet undetermined, which saddens both Jeff and Vicki Richards and their faithful audiences who have supported the troupe since its debut. The only community theater company with

roots in Gig Harbor has staged productions at four locations in just the past two years, from downtown to PenMet Parks, Key Peninsula Civic Center to the Dragonfly Theater in Port Orchard. Members of Paradise Theatre are committed to move ahead with four productions this spring and summer in what may be their last year together if a new home cannot be found. But as Vicki, Paradise’s artistic director says, “Unless something magical happens, we may have to close after our next show, though we are committed to move ahead and see the season through if it is at all possible.” They opened the season with the stage version of “The Addams family” as a celebration of their 20th anniversary, and it was also the 50th

anniversary of the show. “It was one of our favorite shows that we had done,” says Vicki. “We even had some of the same cast members from before. It was a really fun show.” Performances of their current show, “Forbidden Broadway,” are scheduled to run until March 21. “If we have to go, we’re going out with a bang,” says Jeff, who serves as managing director at Paradise Theatre. The 2019-2020 lineup included the ambitious staging of “Newsies,” “All Shook Up” and “Mamma Mia.” The light-hearted “Shrek” is scheduled to take centerstage from June 19 until July 11. In what could be the company’s last show, the Paradise ensemble has scheduled

four weekends of August for the upbeat musical “Pirates of Penzance.” Silent auctions to raise funds to keep Paradise Theatre alive have been scheduled during a special benefit performance on closing night of “Pirates.” Vicki proudly boasted that the Paradise company has produced seven shows per year over the past 20 years, not including the special programs the company stages for children. She says plans for what could be the company’s final indoor performance will mirror the cabaretstyle productions when the troupe raised the curtain on its first performance. If the final curtain comes down on the Paradise Theatre this season, it will not be for lack of

effort. Vicki recounted how actors, technicians and theater patrons filled the Gig Harbor City Council chambers in 2019 to plead for financial assistance after Vicki admitted she had “exhausted every effort to find a permanent home.” The presentation to the council by actors in full costume from “The Music Man” was supported by dozens of subscribers who crowded the council chambers to underscore how much community theater can enrich the cultural side of the city. Jeff came clad in costume as the Mayor from the musical. “We asked the council for rent credits of $50,000 over 10 years to help us afford to keep our doors open in Gig Harbor,” says Vicki. “We left with virtually nothing.” What they offered

37

was the upper level of the Masonic Temple, but it was uninhabitable and would require nearly a $100,00 investment into the space. “It didn’t make sense for us financially and was not feasible for us to take on,” says Vicki. Paradise Theatre reached out to and partnered with PenMet Parks for a few smaller shows, which allowed the Paradise company to stage smaller shows until March of last year. After exhausting their efforts in Gig Harbor, Jeff and Vicki had the choice to close the doors April 2019 or try out Port Orchard, an idea their patrons liked and gave them the green light to pursue it. “We moved to Port Orchard to test drive the old movie cinema (Dragonfly) in April, as it had been for sale for more than seven years. One of our regulars kept sending the listing to us

while looking for a place in Gig Harbor,” says Vicki. “While renting it and working on raising the down payment to purchase, the building was red tagged, putting us out of business once again at that location. We quickly packed up and moved again to Southpark Village in Port Orchard while continuing to negotiate on the Dragonfly. We remain at Southpark until the end of March and will be out of a home again.” Jeff did admit there are several spaces in Gig Harbor that could provide enough space to stage productions with adequate storage room for costumes, sets the company requires and seating for 100 theatergoers. But the price point for space in Gig Harbor, he says, is beyond anything the company could even consider. The managing director says the company could survive with a space as small as 4,500 square feet to comfortably seat at least 100 people. He would prefer to find a stage in Gig Harbor so elderly season ticket subscribers would not be forced to drive on dark highways after a night performance. “The country roads on this part of the (Olympic) peninsula can be treacherous on a dark and stormy night,” says Jeff. “A significant portion of our season ticket subscribers are elderly. That is a situation none of us want to see for our loyal patrons.” Even though Paradise Theatre has played to sold-out audiences over the years, he admits the lack of a permanent space has caused attendance to drop and confusion for many of the longtime Paradise supporters. “Since we left Gig Harbor, it’s been hard,” adds Vicki. “We will continue to host our popular Haunted House every Halloween and have a fireworks stand for the Fourth of July, but those fundraisers and ticket sales are simply not enough to stage shows on the scale our audiences have come to expect,” says Jeff. “Especially with the price of commercial real estate in town.” He adds, “This is our hometown. We’ve received numerous donations from our subscribers and from residents of Gig Harbor who realize the importance of theater and what it brings to a community.

Despite the setbacks, Jeff, who has his masters in theatre with an emphasis in directing, is optimistic that a solution will be found before the final curtain comes down on the Paradise Theatre this summer. “We have invested 20 years in Paradise Theatre,” says Vicki. “It’s sad to us that we haven’t been able to find a permanent home. You can only do what you can do.” With a little help from the Gig Harbor community, and beyond, Paradise Theatre will be able to take to the stage to entertain audiences for years to come, and the show will go on. Be sure to get your tickets to see “Forbidden Broadway” playing through March 21 at 1731 Village Lane SE, a hilarious parody of your favorite Broadway shows! As Vicki says, “This may be our swan song unless an ‘Angel’ comes forward.” If you are interested in finding out more about Paradise Theatre, you can contact Vicki Richards at vrichards@paradisetheatre.org or Jeff Richards at 253.851.7529 (call or text). If you would like to make a donation to Paradise Theatre, visit ParadiseTheatre.org/donate.html.

or many, bowling is a fun way to blow off steam on a Friday night or relatively cheap entertainment for the kids, but to Peninsula High School junior Riley Schuller and her teammates, it’s serious business. The competitive Seahawks Girls bowling team takes to the lanes throughout the winter against teams from around the region. While each player contributes a score, it’s the team effort that ultimately leads to who wins each competition. Riley is a multiple 200 game bowler with a career high of 216. She’s learned that you need to be mentally tough to excel in bowling. “You may be capable of throwing the ball really well and getting high scores during practice, but if you are not mentally prepared to play a match your scores will always be lower than usual,” she said.

James L Aichlmayr, DMD, PS

Being consistent in your form is key to knocking down strikes and picking up spares, and sometimes even the smallest movements can drastically alter the results. Riley says last season was a challenge because she developed a bad habit of swinging her arm to the left when it needed to go to the right, resulting with a score lower than she had hoped for. “It wasn’t until I showed up for this season that I finally had my arm swing down correctly, and this allowed me to get high enough scores to make it all the way to districts,” she explained.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

40

Riley says the team is welcoming, has little drama and a lot of fun. “Now that the team has gotten another strong group of girls that work together as a team, I can say for certain that the best part of the girls’ bowling team is the community you join when playing with us.” While she still has a year to go, Riley is already focused on her future. She’s maintained a 3.9 or higher GPA while enrolled as a running start student. She is on track to graduate with an associate degree and plans to pursue a four-year degree as well. Her interests are wide ranging from physics and engineering to art. “Some of the career interests I currently have are mechanical engineer, physics specialist (specifically designing roller coasters!) or a pottery artist. Most of my life I always thought art would be the thing I do for a living, as it was the one thing I continued to do throughout school, but when I started taking more challenging math and science classes I began to wonder if this could be something I would enjoy doing for a living. I especially look forward to exploring mechanical engineering more because it allows me to create weird designs for useless robots that I’ve always wanted to try,” she said. Wherever she ends up, she hopes to find a women’s bowling team so she can continue to enjoy the sport she loves so much.

ASHER RAQUIZA, SOPHOMORE

Gig Harbor High School

S

ince the time he could first pick up a basketball, Asher Raquiza has loved the sport. His career started at the age of 3 and took off fast. Asher played in the Upward Basketball program from kindergarten through second grade and was part of the Tides Select AAU program from third through eighth grade. He was offensive player of the year while in middle school, and coaches definitely took notice. Now a sophomore at Gig Harbor High School, Asher is already a major contributor for his high school team. In fact, Gig Harbor captured the league championship this past season, and Asher was the leading scorer on the team. He was also recognized by being named a Second Team All-League selection. While he’s won many tournaments and championships across his many teams, the losses have also been there, something that motivates Asher to continue to improve each practice. “One of my biggest challenges has been losing,” he said. “I can overcome this by outworking and knowing what my full potential is.” A true competitor, Asher tells himself that

enough is never enough and to keep striving for greatness. “I enjoy winning the most and knowing that I always strive to put my best effort on the court,” he said. The high school season has come to a close, but that doesn’t mean Asher will take a break. He continues to work hard at school, evidenced by his 3.95 GPA. He will also continue playing ball for his current AAU program, Total Package AAU. While Asher has hopes in the gym, he can also dish it out on the volleyball court as well. His future goal is to take both of these skills to a Division I program, specifically playing basketball at the University of San Diego, while getting a taste of what it would take to become a professional beach volleyball player as well. He also wants to focus his studies on design and architecture, and to follow in the footsteps of his uncle Cory who is an architect. With goals of a college degree, career, NBA and pro beach volleyball, Asher has his sights set high, and with hard work and the support of his family, the sky's the limit. “I want to do all these things because of my love for them,” he said.

SHOW YOUR HEART GIG HARBOR’S DANIELLE DEMOTT NOMINATED FOR LLS WOMAN OF THE YEAR BY RACHEL KELLY | PHOTOS COURTESY OF DANIELLE DEMOTT AND THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

O

ur own Danielle DeMott of Gig Harbor has been nominated to compete in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) 2020 Woman of the Year. Across the country money is being raised for the LLS in honor of blood cancer survivors. Candidates in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska chapter compete with other candidates across the country to fundraise the most money between March 27 and June 5. The winner is subject to much fanfare and will be featured in Forbes magazine and honored at Soho Park in June.

That pretty much sums up Danielle’s approach toward this year's competition; a world without cancer is a world that wins. The competition is meant as a fundraiser, and in doing that the competitor gains greater satisfaction. With a background in celebrity sports real estate, a gentle smile and an innovative personality, it’s no wonder that she was nominated as a perfect candidate for this year's competition. Winning requires creativity, ingenuity, charisma and a big heart. And heart is exactly what Danielle has in abundance.

Then the greater competition begins: the national title of LLS’s Man and Woman of the Year.

Her campaign slogan is simply this: Show your heart. In a world where it’s easy to shy away from soft-hearted generosity, Danielle’s statement seems fitting to who she is as a human being. Even in the little things, Danielle strives to be a person who is vulnerable. Regardless of what she’s been through, she only has eyes for where she’s going. Her endurance

When I asked Danielle if she was excited about the fanfare and the prospect of winning, she shrugged her shoulders and simply stated: “In a competition like this, where the money goes toward cancer research, everyone's a winner.”

Show your heart

for healing has made Danielle someone who strives to be kind, even when the world is unkind. It’s this same capacity for vulnerability that some could argue for as being a weakness but what the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has deemed a strength. Since her openness results in a better community, I’m inclined to agree. Showing her heart is exactly why Danielle got involved with LLS in the first place. Though she doesn’t have any personal experience with cancer, she feels deeply for others. Caring for others is an innate aspect of who she is. Plus, she feels like she’s in a good place to help. Her unique experience, open schedule, creative mind and connections make for a serious fundraising package. In other words, her mind is bursting with fundraising ideas; ideas that are not just focused on celebrity representation or million-dollar donations, but on every little bit. Her strategy for this year's efforts is to “just ask for a little, and people will do what they can.” In other words, she trusts in the better half of people to win out. It is that mentality that makes her so inspiring. Most people don’t have the time or energy to give a lot, but everyone can give a little. With generous action, Danielle hopes to inspire a little openness in everyone she meets. Whether that person is big in the limelight, or small. All that Danielle wants to see is a show of heart.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

And as for Danielle’s personal plans? She hopes to be a flight attendant. She’s currently in the interview process, but that takes a few months, so why not do something good for her community in the meantime? She’s willing, and so she is able. She also participates in an adult kickball team and spends her free time painting and woodworking. The dream is to one day open up her own little boutique. Will that happen? She’s not sure. She thinks it would work though. Danielle is a special soul. Not because she’s somehow larger than life or especially capable in comparison to someone else. She’s not famous, nor does she have a lot of money. She has time, but never too much. She has experience, but aside from winning Ms. West Coast she hasn’t spent a whole lot of time in the limelight. Her greatest gift is in her genuine care. She is a woman much like everyone else, except that she seeks to live out to the full extent of her personal gifts for the sake of other people. If you want to show your heart and support Danielle in this year's

MICROBLADING Your solution to beautiful brows By Janae Peterson

f you have ever picked up an eyebrow pencil, chances are you have at least considered semi-permanent makeup to simplify your morning makeup routine. Microblading is a great option to give you beautiful brows every day, without any effort. We answer all your most asked questions.

correct pigment color will then be chosen while carefully considering your hair color, skin undertone and natural eyebrow color. After the eyebrows are properly sterilized, a topical numbing cream will be applied to the area to ensure little to no pain during the procedure. Instead of using a traditional tattoo gun, your brow artist will use a freehand tool to gently place small, feather-like brush strokes with the chosen pigment color. You will leave your appointment with a thin layer of medical ointment on your eyebrows. A sixto eight-week follow-up appointment will be required. At this appointment, the process is repeated to achieve full results.

What is microblading? Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo technique to give the illusion of fuller, more youthful eyebrows. Pigment is scratched into the skin using a hand tool, in short strokes resembling natural eyebrow hair.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PURPOSE AND FUNCTION AS THERAPY PART I

Whole Person

BY MARIEL C. KRAUS, OTR/L

A

s an occupational therapist (OT), I am used to having to explain that occupational therapy does not mean I give people “work therapy” or help them find a better job. Readers of my articles know that occupational therapy is a uniquely diversified allied health profession that rehabilitates people of all ages, and in all areas, of functional activity. Our training varies by our schools but, overall, OT is more than just physical rehabilitation. We have roots in psychiatry and our education is strong in neurosciences. We are human skills specialists who address “occupations” that fall into these areas: • ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) fundamental tasks of self-care/IADLs activities to support ADLs within the home and community • Rest/Sleep • Education/Productivity • Work/Industry Ergonomics and “Hardening” • Mental/Behavioral Health - communitybased and in-patient settings • Leisure/Play (This is fundamental to child development physically, socially and emotionally.) • Aging Safely at home and community • Social Participation OTs must master knowledge of human anatomy, neuroanatomy, physiology and psychology to provide physical and mental/ behavioral rehabilitation to people who have lost the ability to perform the tasks that fall into the above areas after an injury, illness or progressive disease. It is easy to take for granted how many systems are involved in just tying one’s shoes until it is impacted by Down’s Syndrome, a stroke, ALS, traumatic head injury or arthritis. OTs have a variety of clinical skills that allow us to work in several treatment settings and populations. We utilize our hands, use multiple types of tools and methods to mitigate pain, teach independence, improve movement and facilitate optimal function.

Specialized Physical Therapies designed for Treating the

modification for aging in place, functional movement clinics, vision therapy, driving rehabilitation, high-tech orthotics and prosthetics, art and music therapy studios, wellness and telehealth practices. The possibilities are virtually endless! OTs would be best referred to as functional therapists because of the misunderstood term of “occupations” as activities of purpose. When asking for a referral for OT, don’t be surprised if your physician refers to us as “PT” or what we do as “physical therapy” because they think of it as a verb, but PT and OT are like brands of physical rehabilitation; the difference between the two can be briefly explained by a short list and a long list. The short and well-understood list is that PT is focused on walking and gross motor movement (sports medicine, athletic injuries, joint replacements, and walking after injuries, strokes and birth defects). The long OT list is more diverse and therefore more complicated to explain, but we are “whole-person” and community re-integration oriented. Despite similarities and differences, OT and PT disciplines are rehabilitation allies and include SLP (speech and language pathologists, aka speech therapists).

THE INVISIBLE GORILLA IN THE ROOM SLEEP APNEA AND CHILDREN BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS, UPTOWN DENTAL & WELLNESS CENTER

“Snoring is totally natural. In fact, in the caveman days, it scared away wild animals!”

Sleep apnea is when a person partially or fully stops breathing at night during sleep.

ven after we know how our beliefs and intuitions are flawed, they remain stubbornly resistant to change,” wrote authors Chabris and Simons in the famous psychology experiment titled “The Gorilla in the Room.” One example, which we know to be false but many still believe, is this: Driving down the road on the cell phone, we believe we’re paying attention to the road.

Did you know that the brain needs oxygen all the time? It’s hungry for O2. Brain cells die without sufficient oxygen, and we don’t grow new brain cells. It should be clear that treating children with sleep apnea and adults is important.

“E

My question is: “Do you believe that snoring in adults or children is normal?” I personally believe, with regard to wild animals, it would be better to be quiet and silent! But that’s me. Not everyone feels the same way, and we’re all entitled to our beliefs. But, if you go to YouTube and watch videos of children with sleep apnea, it’ll break your heart. Why should you be concerned? Sleep apnea can: • Affect children’s growth hormones • Cause the child to be incorrectly diagnosed with ADHD • Cause changes in facial structure and lower jaw development • Affect children’s learning abilities in school Why should a dentist be concerned about this issue? Because people, including children, can suffer from silent acid reflux due to sleep apnea and/or snoring, causing more cavities. With adult patients, we see gum disease because lack of sleep causes an inability to resolve gum inflammation. What kind of inflammation can plague a child? Asthma-type symptoms, fluctuation in blood sugar levels, irritable bowel symptoms and severity of Crohn’s disease.

In my dental practice, I asked a little 4-yearold to say “Ahhh” to check his airway, and I was stunned! I looked at his dad and said, “Wow! Does he snore at night?” His dad said, “All the time. He’s a wild snorer.” The little guy had no airway due to huge tonsils and adenoids. I recommended he see his pediatrician and an ENT specialist. The next time he came in for a checkup, I asked his dad how he was doing, and the dad said, “He’s a different child!” What should you look for? • Children who sleep with their mouth open • Retruded lower jaw • Long, narrow face • Tired • Moving all around the bed • Up frequently at night • Not doing well in school • Too much energy and/or irritability • Infections • Bed wetting Our beliefs and intuition used to tell us that only overweight people had sleep apnea. This is absolutely not true. Weight does play a significant role in the severity of sleep apnea, but even children and fit people can suffer from disordered airway breathing.

EXERCISING THROUGH AGE THE SECRETS TO A LONG, HEALTHY LIFE BY ROBINA GAINES, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AT OLYMPIC ALZHEIMER'S RESIDENCE

S

taying active at every age is one of the secrets to a long, healthy life. But, despite best intentions, it can be difficult to motivate yourself into beginning—and sticking to—a regular exercise routine. Physical constraints or a busy schedule may create a barrier to getting adequate exercise, but it is important to prioritize physical activity into your schedule, especially as you age and your body changes. It’s never too late to adopt a healthier lifestyle and reap the benefits of active aging. Even light daily exercises can improve your body’s wound-healing process, prevent disease, foster greater independence and even increase your mental capacity. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that individuals age 65 and older try to incorporate at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise into each week. While this may sound like a lot, breaking it down into 10- or 15-minute chunks of exercise two or more times a day can make it much more manageable—and enjoyable! Think about finding a simple way to exercise right when you wake up, before or after you eat lunch, and again before you get ready for bed. Exercising doesn’t need to take place in a gym or even outdoors. A great way to keep in the habit of healthy movements is to incorporate small exercises into your otherwise inactive moments during the day. Do you need to reach to retrieve a glass from your cupboard? Grab the glass, return it to the cupboard, and repeat the action with your alternate arm. Are there stairs where you live? Challenge yourself to use them instead of a ramp or elevator. Do you regularly watch TV? Try to get up from your chair and walk around the house during commercial breaks. It’s these little daily actions that can make a huge positive impact on your health in the long term.

If you prefer staying active outdoors, going on a light stroll, gardening, raking leaves and fishing are all excellent activities. Or, if you like participating in your community, becoming a volunteer at local events is another great way to stay active while making a difference in the lives of others. It’s a win-win! Even these seemingly small acts can make a big difference in improving and maintaining your health. Performing daily exercises slows the loss of muscle, strengthens bones and reduces joint problems. Keeping up on exercise also greatly improves your balance, which reduces your risk of falling and suffering a serious injury like a fractured hip or head trauma.

Beer Breweries

WASHINGTON USES HOMEGROWN HOPS IN EVERY PINT; IDAHO FALLS ‘BARLEY’ BEHIND BY DAN AZNOFF

s W

ith the number of small and boutique breweries rising faster than the head on a stout porter, craft beermakers in Washington have opened the tap to new customers in an increasingly thirsty market. According to the Washington State Liquor Control Board (WSLCB), production almost doubled in terms of barrels per year at many breweries on the western side of the mountains over the past decade. For example, demand at Pike Brewing Company in Seattle jumped from 17,401 to almost 43,000 barrels in the five-year span, an increase more than 245 percent.

The state board reported that almost two dozen craft breweries have opened for business over the past two years. As any of the beermakers will tell you, there are more than hops, barley and water that go into the making of a great craft beer. The craft beer industry has grown in terms of both variety and sophistication. Like a fine wine, brewmasters are pairing craft beer with food to bring out the subtle tastes and the differences infused into every brew. “The craft beer industry in Washington is changing. It’s a different animal,” said Ken Nabors, who has been brewing African Amber at Mac & Jack's Brewery for 26 years. “When we first started there were a total of 26 breweries in the state. “Now there are 417.” Nabors emphasized that the majority of craft brewers in the state produce less than 2,000 barrels per year. The Academy Founders Mac and Jack still own and run the brewery with their team of dedicated beer lovers in the Warehouse District of Redmond behind Marymoor Park. “We’re still listening to our customers, still learning how to do it better and still laughing about it,” Nabors said with a smile. Mac & Jack’s does more than produce beer. It also serves as a training ground for a growing armada of craft brewers. When childhood friends Dick Mergens and Shawn Dowling decided to make a full-time commitment to their hobby of making beer, the pair made a commitment to learn all they could about the business side of brewing before they opened Crucible Brewing in an Everett retail strip mall in late 2015.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

57

Mergens quit his day job at a home improvement center to take a job at the Mac & Jack’s Brewery to learn the business. He worked his way up to the brewhouse before moving to another Redmond brewery—Hi-Fi Brewing. During his time at Mac & Jack’s, Mergens worked with American Brewing head brewer Adam Frantz to understand the intricacies of how to be an efficient brewer in a commercial brewhouse. Mergens described Mac & Jack’s as “The Academy.” His education was apparently a success. Crucible recently opened a second tasting room in the heart of wine country in Woodinville. “You get worked to death over there, but you learn a lot,” said Mergens. “Shawn and I continue to tinker with our formulas to offer even more choices for our loyal customers.” While IPAs and ales are the most frequent pours from taps across the state, the different styles of beer and the diverse patrons who consume the effervescent beverage are as different as the weather on each side of the Cascades. Spokane Craft beermakers have developed subtle differences in the mixture of ingredients and distribution methods that reflect each region of Washington. A prime example are the numerous craft breweries that sprung up in Spokane during the ‘90s to serve the thirsty college students from Gonzaga and nearby Eastern Washington University in Cheney. The smaller breweries formulated and served pale ales that have become known as “Spokane-style” beers that are meant to be enjoyed with friends. No-Li is a template for the style of beer that still dominates the nightlife in Spokane. The pale brew can race its beginnings to five of the pubs at the heart of the U District scene that have opened since 1993. Each pours a version of the light beer to go well with food and an evening out on the town. Founded in 2011, Iron Goat Brewing Company joined the party in 2011 from its trendy location in the historical district on Second Avenue. The pub offers its standards like Paul’s Pale Ale, Goatmeal Stout, Bleating Red Ale and the nasty Trashy Blonde. For those in an adventurous mood, the brewmaster at Iron Goat serves an aggressive India Pale Ale, a Head Butt IPA and the Impaler Imperial IPA.

The dark varieties served down the block at Perry Street Brewing and the field-to-tap pilsner from Big Barn Brewing Co. are just two more of the unique offerings to be discovered as you drink your way through the core of downtown. Gig Harbor Founded in 2015 by longtime Gig Harbor resident and beer enthusiast John Fosberg, the Gig Harbor Brewing Co. is home to five regular pours, four seasonal brews and four specialty formulations. The founder’s favorite is the Sturdy Gertie® Double IPA with 7 percent alcohol by volume. “It’s not super hoppy,” Fosberg said with a proud smile. “But it has a dark malty taste, high alcohol content and is a delicious beer.” Unable to find warehouse space large enough to accommodate his fledgling operation, Fosberg opened the first Gig Harbor Brewing Co. facility in Tacoma on South Tacoma Way. He was talked out of changing the name of his new business by some of his investors. “They told me to just make my beer,” he said. “They will find you.” And they did. Fosberg credits his brewmaster Mike O’Hara for his efforts to develop many of the trademark brews, including his best seller, the Giggly Blonde Ale. O’Hara spent eight years perfecting his talent as the brewmaster at Georgetown Brewing in Seattle before he brought his talents to Gig Harbor.

Fosberg opened a tasting room next to Skansie Brothers Park on Harborview Drive when the right space became available. His beers, he said, have quickly gained a reputation around town for their traditional easy-drinking style. Founded by four local beer enthusiasts, the proprietors of Wet Coast Brewing Co. believe that there is much more to operating a brewery than simply producing a quality craft beer. The people behind Wet Coast want their patrons to “experience their beer, to celebrate life and to rejoice in all things wet.” Wet Coast utilizes a 3.5-barrel brewing system at its facility at 6820 Kimball Drive to provide a selection of Northwest-inspired craft ales in an on-site taproom where patrons can enjoy a pint of cream ale and a Mexican lager. The year-round varieties available from Wet Coast range from the Brass Rail Pale Ale to a Bottleman Brown Ale with hints of nut and chocolate. There are also two IPAs with alcohol volumes from 5 to 6.2 percent. Idaho Not to be left out of the action, the Gem State has more to offer drinkers than potatoes for vodka. Idaho is the nation’s third largest producer of hops, and the state’s capitol in Boise has developed its own style of craft beer. Former Boeing engineer Mike Francis pours the results of his experimentation at Payette Brewing. His Twelve Gauge Imperial Stout is aged in bourbon barrels for 12 months, which he said introduces hints of vanilla and oak to go along with tastes of chocolate and coffee. Grand Teton Brewing in the town of Victor at the base of the namesake mountains is made with water from glacial runoff that has been naturally filtered for 500 years through limestone. The result is a hoppy pale ale with strong overtones of citrus.

Despite a reputation that would defy the image as a hub for craft breweries, the northern portion of the state has established its reputation for natural, hand-crafted craft beers served at family friendly breweries. Mickduff ’s Brewing Company in Sandpoint was established in 2006 by two brothers with a passion for brewing their own style of craft beer and living year-round in their idea of paradise. The tap handles at Mickduff ’s include a Huckleberry Blonde Ale made with fruit puree for a zesty flavor. The local brewery’s version of a Black-and-Tan is made with equal parts of Tipsy Toehead Blonde and Knot Tree Porter. Down Highway 2 in Bonners Ferry, the Kootenai River Brewing Company features the dark McGregor Scottish Ale as well as the award-winning Hoptic Blast IPA that visitors seem to either love or hate, according to Jeremiah Holes, the lead server in the brewery restaurant.

Each batch of beer, he explained, is distinctive because each is made with the best available hops from local farms. Overall, the beers at Kootenai tend to be a little more “hoppy.” That includes the bourbon barrel-aged porter made with coffee from a roaster right in Sandpoint. “Depending on the day, I’ll usually have a Grizzly IPA or one of our popular beers flavored with local huckleberries,” said Holes. “Our brewmasters tend to get creative

depending on what is freshest at the markets or in our own fields.” The Kootenai River Brewing Company was established in 2010 and currently serves 11 distinct beers from a taproom at the crown point of the state near the Canadian border with views of the Kootenai River and the scenic mountain ranges of North Idaho. Whether your preference in a frosted pint is a Spokane-style light ale or a dark rich porter, craft breweries in Washington and Idaho have what you want on tap cold and ready to enjoy. small garden spaces

KEEP IT SIMPLE AND WORK WITH THE SPACE YOU HAVE By Abigail Thorpe

I

t may have been an awfully grey winter, but with spring just around the corner, we’re all getting a little anxious to get outside and start prepping our gardens for the warmer months—or at least to start thinking about it.

Don’t let the size of your outdoor space discourage you from planning your own spring garden. Whether you have a full backyard or just a porch, there are many ways to add a little color to your space. Here are some tips for creating a welcoming garden retreat, no matter the space you’re working with. Stack and layer. Pots of every size are your friend if you’re working with a small space. If you can’t go out, go up, recommends Anne Gibson of The Micro Gardener. Stack and layer pots in tiers, on steps, terraces or even just a small deck or patio to add some dimension to your space and create growing room for veggies and flowers. Work with your space. If you have a long, narrow space, then choose a planter that mirrors that shape and still allows room for you to work around. You can even utilize an outdoor table to build a small tabletop garden, or install brackets to plant a window box if space is very limited, says Gibson. Think ahead. Succession plant, so you can enjoy fruits, veggies and flowers on a rotating basis, suggests Gibson. For example, if you have a large plant that takes time to mature and spread out, like zucchini, utilize the space around to grow something that matures at a faster rate and can be enjoyed in the meantime, like “cut and come again” lettuce. Pair plants from the same family that you may not want alongside other veggies or plants—like bulb onions, chives and shallots—in a pot or small growing space. Opt for plants that can perform multiple functions, like lavender, sunflowers and chives. Mini size it. If you don’t have the space for a full-sized fruit tree, opt for dwarf fruit trees that will still produce but take up much less space and can even be planted in a pot. Many varieties of veggies, herbs and shrubs or bushes also come in dwarf varieties, like miniature roses. Raised garden beds are a wonderful option if you don’t have a

ton of space but still want a small garden to supply your kitchen. Think about the seasonality and maturity time of what you plant so you can succession grow to make the most of your space. Go vertical. Use height to create privacy. Varieties of creeping vines can cover trellis or existing fences, or you can use ladders, pallets and shelves to create a living wall that can give your small space some privacy while providing a beautiful backdrop and growing space for your backyard, porch or deck. It’s in the details. Even the way you place your pavers can have a big impact on how large a space feels, advises David Domoney, a British horticulturist and TV personality. Pave on the diagonal to make a space appear larger, and include trees, even in a small space, to add height and also create more privacy.

Keep it bright! Brightly colored flowers will help lighten a small space and make it appear larger. If you’re including outdoor furniture in your space, make sure it is size appropriate, and don’t overcrowd the space. Compact furniture like a small bistro table and chairs can offer seating options and add to their surroundings without taking up precious space or looking out of place. Uniformity. Larger spaces can accommodate various styles and materials, but in a small space it’s key to keep it simple and uniform, recommends The Spruce. Limit the hardscape materials to a limited scheme that compliments its surroundings. Start small. Make your garden space personal. If you’re trying to decide where to start, choose a spot that will compliment your home, add a pop of color, and that you will enjoy on a daily basis, such as the entry-way to

your drive, or a plot by your front door or back patio.

Have a fruit tree in a pot? Plant an edible living ground cover like thyme around the base that will act as a mulch for the tree and provide some herbs for your table.

Merge garden and home. Utilize the placement of your home and yard to plan your garden. Plant up against the home to help compliment the architectural characteristics of your house and save space, and utilize the perimeter of your yard to help define the space and still preserve an open grass area. Some bright pops of color surrounding your home and yard can add some beautiful detail and space for growing fruit, veggies and flowers while not taking up valuable space to entertain or play.

It’s key to

Design with purpose. Plan your garden space with a specific purpose in mind. Create a focal point that draws the eye, suggests The Spruce, like a water feature, flower bed or garden island.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Little Tips: Use vertical, upright plants instead of those prone to spread out to save space. Look for veggies that reproduce fast, like “cut and come again” greens that require minimal space and have a high yield.

Going Greener

SIMPLE ECO-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPING TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT THIS YEAR By Taylor Shillam

A

s we enter another spring in the Northwest, so begins the preparation to revitalize our landscapes, lawns and gardens. Whether the spring of 2020 will find you starting from scratch or breathing new vitality into an existing landscape, there are many simple ways to increase the sustainability of your efforts.

With the goal of avoiding an excess use of resources, and allowing the local climate to naturally thrive, eco-friendly landscaping is growing in both popularity and practice. Increasing the sustainability of your residential landscape or garden contributes to reduced energy waste, maintaining the cleanliness of the water and air, a healthier regional wildlife population, minimized atmospheric greenhouse gas and upholding a solid foundation for future generations to be able to experience the same benefits. Reducing your environmental footprint and turning toward sustainable landscaping may seem like a daunting task—but it doesn’t need to be.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

At the heart of a thriving garden are greener practices that take just a little bit of extra care but, when done routinely, add up to a significantly positive impact. Both novice gardeners and experienced green thumbs can easily implement a few tweaks to contribute to a more eco-friendly landscape this spring. Here are a few ways to reduce the environmental impact of your landscape practices while maintaining a landscape you love. Plant Choice Green landscaping starts early on with the actual selection of your plants. Including plant life in your landscaping provides a unique diversity to the look, smell and feel of your yard or garden. Beyond their aesthetic contributions, plants enrich the environment by providing shade, clean air, temperature regulation and a habitat for valuable organisms, among many other valuable functions. Selecting plants that are native or adapted to the conditions of your

residential area will require less resources and maintenance to ensure they thrive, since they won’t need to adapt to an unfamiliar environment. Choosing plants appropriate to the local climate also reduces the risk of creating an environment prone to the damage of invasive species and instead allows the safety and promotion of healthy pollinators and beneficial microorganisms. You can easily learn more about the selection of plants native to the region with online resources like the NWF Native Plant Finder and the Wildflower Center Native Plant Database. Another factor to consider: Annual plants require the most water to maintain, making perennials and grasses the most efficient choice for water use. Efficient Water Use As we head into summer and temperatures begin to creep up, intentional and efficient water use becomes critical. The most significant impacts of your “greener” efforts will be related to water conservation. Up to 60 percent of the average residential use of water is for landscaping, so finding ways to cut back can reduce your spending while reducing water waste. The use of hardscapes in your landscape design (hardscapes being any selection of rocks, pavers, decks, etc.) allows you to diversify the look of your outdoor space and create interest while reducing the required amount of water to maintain the aesthetic. Hardscapes can be incorporated into pathways, stepping stones, fire pits and patios, providing more ways to enjoy your outdoor space while reducing the need for water.

At the heart of a thriving garden are greener practices that take just a little bit of extra care. Soil Health Healthy soil is a critical foundational element to a sustainable garden or landscape. According to Landscape for Life, healthy soil will remove pollutants, cleanse water and restore atmospheric carbon, along with the functions we’re most familiar with, such as water storage and plant nourishment. In sustainable gardens, soils are healthy, living ecosystems, protected by vegetation or mulch, and best allow plants to thrive. Heavily mulching in plant beds can protect gardens from weeds, pests and disease. Mulch provides a protective layer to insulate roots and cover soil, which can reduce water evaporation and moderate soil temperature. Using organic mulch in garden beds and surrounding trees helps to provide nourishing minerals when the mulch decomposes and can improve water retention. Inorganic mulches like crushed stones and rubber chips are best placed in hardscape settings. Maintenance With a healthy landscape in place, it’s important to remember that maintenance practices are just as critical to ensuring the health of that landscape’s environmental footprint. Thoughtful maintenance practices work with nature, not against it, for a process that is more time-efficient, economically wise and environmentally friendly. One simple example is your choice of lawn mower. Compared to a gas-powered lawn mower, an electric lawn mower will emit significantly lower levels of air pollution. Pesticides are another important consideration. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reported that homeowners apply pesticides at a rate almost 20 times

higher than farmers use on agricultural land. Pesticide exposure isn’t a new topic of conversation by any means, but it’s important to keep in mind the non-chemical options that are available. Organic fertilizers (such as compost) and non-chemical pest control can reduce toxic chemical release into the air and water supply, reducing the possibility for the multitude of negative health effects that have been associated with toxic pesticide exposure. With a goal in mind to choose the least chemically laden, most naturally derived pest-control products you can, you’ll find with a bit of research, there are a good amount of available options. Often these choices will use Neem, a plant known for its inherent pesticide qualities. More natural options will better target the true pests in your garden without spreading additional harm to beneficial insects, like traditional pesticides so often do. Regardless of your level of experience with gardening, landscaping or sustainability, you can start small, and start today. By being intentional with your plant selection, prioritizing efficient water use and choosing safer maintenance methods, you can make your garden positively “greener” in 2020.

DESIGN with a plan

It used to be putting a room together or remodeling involved hiring an expensive design specialist or doing the guesswork yourself. What might have looked good in your mind turns into something you don’t particularly love once completed. This can be a costly endeavor, and not being comfortable in your own home is something no one should have to feel. Today, there are plenty of ways to eliminate the guesswork and allow you to play around with your room before setting out for paint, furnishings and design help.

S E R V I C E S B R I N G YO U R R O O M TO L I F E V I R T UA L LY By Colin Anderson

PAINT ON THE WALLS Paint is the easiest and most cost-effective way to spruce up a room. While ultimately it’s always a good idea to buy a sample and see it on the wall, you can do a lot of narrowing down by using several paint brands’ visualization services. Behr, for example, has all its colors and shines available to see on the company’s website. You can then select a room from the ‘Visualizer’ service that looks similar to the room you are updating, whether it is a bedroom, living room or other space in your home. You can apply your selected color to the walls to see how it will appear once applied. This is especially useful if you are looking at pairing colors together. Here you get a nice visual to see if the colors clash or decide if you should go a shade lighter or darker. You can often find these programs in the paint aisle at major retailers as well.

ONLINE DESIGNERS Havenly.com is changing the game for those on a budget. The site offers professional design help for packages of $79 or $129. When you sign up for their services, you give the company your room dimensions, what you want to see updated, and set a budget on how much you want to spend. You can even let the service know what pieces of furniture you already have that you don’t want to eliminate from the remodel, and they will be included in the final visual layout. You are given visuals to choose from which you rate on a simple scale to give your designer an idea of what styles you like. The designer takes all the information and puts together a to-scale visual of your room with new pieces based on the information you provide and your budget. The full package also allows for more collaboration with the designer. The site makes money off commissions from purchases you make from the room you are given, but you are under no obligation to buy any of the pieces the designer includes in your layout. Other sites like Decorilla.com and Modsy.com offer similar services and pricing models.

FURNITURE DIY If you are having a hard time finding exactly what you are looking for in an end table, bookcase or wine rack, build it yourself! While professional CAD software can set you back financially, there are alternatives that are very user friendly and quite affordable. SketchUp.com has as free basic 3D modeling program easily installed on your home computer. More advanced subscriptions cost as little as $119 per year. Here you can dream up exactly what you are looking for and come out with the exact dimensions and specifications for making it happen. If you are uncomfortable with operating power equipment, you can present your design to a furniture maker who can assemble your custom piece for you. When friends come over and compliment your piece, it’ll be even more rewarding telling them you designed it—and maybe even built it yourself.

PEEL AND STICK If you feel the virtual avenue doesn’t quite give you the full effect, you can still place samples on the wall without actually applying the paint. Samplize.com works with popular paint brands like Home Depot, Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore to create peel and stick samples. The company uses actual paint from the manufacturer on its adhesive, so you will get the real thing without having to put permanent paint on the wall. The adhesive can be peeled and replaced many times before it wears out.

5

VIRTUAL FURNITURE LAYOUT Wayfair is quickly becoming a behemoth in the home decorating industry, and the company offers a couple of very helpful tools when furniture shopping for your home. Its Room Planner 3D program allows you to enter the specific dimensions of whatever room you are looking to redecorate, including paint colors and window and door placements. Once you’ve created a room that resembles your own, you can start adding couches, chairs, lamps, area rugs, wall art and much more to get a great visual of your room. Those who download the company’s APP can utilize the ‘View in a Room’ feature in which you turn on your phone’s camera and drag and drop furniture into your actual room.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZERS Sometimes simply getting rid of excess clutter can bring a room right back to life. While it’s easy to just toss out an entire junk drawer, professionals can help you keep your belongings while becoming more organized. Having a professional organizer analyze your spaces and formulate a plan might even keep you from having to create a costly remodel. Digital organizers can be a little harder to come by, but this industry is growing and a quick Google search of your area will often net you local professionals.

A TOWN FOR ALL SEASONS

Small town Sandpoint, Idaho, boasts epic experiences, on and off the mountain By Abigail Thorpe

rive across the long bridge from the south, and you get your first view of Sandpoint, Idaho, nestled along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille between the Selkirk and Cabinet mountain ranges. Whether the sun is peeking over the mountain tops or fog is slowly creeping through the mountains onto the lake, the view is never short of breathtaking.

With a population of only around 8,000, Sandpoint is home to a tight-knit community of skiers, hikers, bikers and other outdoors enthusiasts who wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. “What sets Sandpoint apart from other little towns is the kindness of the people. I noticed it the first time I visited here and felt included immediately,” says Brooke Deccio, owner of Azalea resale shop in the Downtown Sandpoint Shopping District. The shores of Lake Pend Oreille make Sandpoint a popular summer destination for visitors and second-home owners, while in winter locals and visitors alike flock to the local Schweitzer Mountain ski resort for epic views and slopes, with limited crowds. Even shoulder season has something to offer in this town; as the crowds thin out, the colors and foliage start to change (or come alive), and outdoor activities like biking, fishing and hiking abound. Where to Stay Sandpoint offers many options aside from the standard hotel stay, and many include the unique Northwest style and charm that visitors come to expect from North Idaho. If you are coming for the skiing or mountain biking, Schweitzer

WHETHER THE SUN IS PEEKING OVER THE MOUNTAIN TOPS OR FOG IS SLOWLY CREEPING THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS ONTO THE LAKE, THE VIEW IS NEVER SHORT OF BREATHTAKING.

Mountain Resort has a variety of options, including its ski-in, ski-out Selkirk Lodge nestled right in the village, White Pine Lodge apartments and condos, and multiple on-mountain condos that vary in size, and often offer ski-in, ski-out access. “Winter or summer, the outdoor pool and hot tubs are a treat for soaking those muscles after a day of skiing or mountain biking,” says Dig Chrismer, marketing manager for Schweitzer Mountain Resort.

Go Sandpoint (GoSandpoint.com) Vacation Rentals provides homes for rent from the shores of Lake Pend Oreille to Schweitzer Mountain Resort and beyond. They are the preferred booking agent for the exclusive development and golf course at The Idaho Club, where beautiful homes are nestled along the fairways of the Jack Nicklaus designed course.

For lakeside seekers, Dover Bay Resort is nestled where the Pend Oreille River meets Lake Pend Oreille 3 miles from town and is a peaceful waterfront resort that offers vacation rentals both on and off the water to sleep two through 10. Nine miles of walking trails, 9 acres of parks, a waterfront restaurant, gym and hot tub, and marina with available boat rentals make this a perfect spot for those looking to enjoy spring, summer or fall on the lake. The resort also offers one-bedroom apartment rentals at the downtown marina for those wanting to stay right in town.

Stop by the original Evans Brothers Coffee location in the Granary Arts District for a cup of their famous locally roasted coffee. When you’re ready for a second cup, or an après ski drink, head over to newcomer The Longshot, a local cafe with a retro coastal vibe that serves coffee and tea, a selection of interesting beers and natural wines, and a rotating menu of breakfast and lunch items.

Western Pleasure Guest Ranch, located about 30 miles northeast of town, offers rustic stays in log cabins or the main lodge. The fifth-generation dude ranch is open year-round, with horseback riding in the summer, and sleigh rides and nordic trails in the winter. All-inclusive stays with gourmet country meals make this the ideal spot to unplug and get away for a few days.

Where to Eat

Local winemaker Pend d’Oreille Winery’s tasting room is housed in the old brick furniture store downtown and is a must-stop for wine-lovers. Pair a glass of its beloved Meyer Reserve Cab Sauv or distinct Deadhead Petit Verdot with one of the flatbread pizzas—you won’t be sorry. For lakeside dining, head over to Forty-One South, situated just south of the long bridge along Lake Pend Oreille in the Lodge at Sandpoint. A crackling fire in winter and incredible deck-side views in summer make

this a year-round local gem. Or head downtown to Trinity at City Beach and take in the breathtaking lake vista from their large outdoor deck while enjoying the Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad and a signature cocktail. The restaurant overlooks Sandpoint's summer play area, City Beach, and the nearby marina, with the mountains serving as a picturesque backdrop. Downtown watering hole Eichardt’s Pub and Grill is a favorite amongst Sandpoint locals. Housed in an old wood building on Cedar Street, it’s been serving beers and local eats for over 20 years, as evidenced by the rows of personal beer steins hanging from the wall, and layers of bottles covering the rafters and window ledges. Stop in for a beer and some comfort food, and catch one of the live music shows. Dollar beer day is Thursday and never fails to bring a crowd in, offering pints of $1 beer until the keg runs out. For beer lovers, Sandpoint offers several breweries, including Matchwood Brewing, Utara Brewing, MickDuff ’s Brewing, and Laughing Dog Brewing out in Ponderay. If the season permits, hop on a bicycle and make it a bike and brew day. What to Do For spring skiing, hit up the 2,900 acres of slopes at Schweitzer Mountain. The resort has a local, down-to-earth vibe, and the lines are rarely long. “Schweitzer is an unpretentious, uncrowded destination with views you’ll never forget of Lake Pend Oreille, three states and Canada,” says Chrismer. “We strive to offer a true mountain experience, where guests feel immediately at home.” If downhill is not your style, there are 32 kilometers of nordic trails, and some delightful restaurants in the village to stop and rest your legs while you enjoy some light repast at Gourmandie, Chimney Rock or the more laid back Pucci’s Pub.

In summer, the mountain opens its slopes to mountain bikers and hikers, with lift service to the top. It’s worth the trip up just for the view. Whether you’re driving—or biking—down from the mountain, sparkling Lake Pend Oreille lays just below. Come summertime the lake comes alive with boaters, kayakers and paddle boarders, with options like Tack Boat Rentals for local rentals if you’re looking to get out on the lake. Downtown is easily walkable, and a jaunt along the local shopping district is a must do. “If visiting, you can't miss a matinee or performance at the historic Panida Theater, getting a coffee from the Longshot, making your rounds at consignment and gift shops La Chic Boutique and Azalea, or joining a Monday evening run coordinated by Jenny at Outdoor Experience,” says Deccio. Stop for an ice cream at Panhandle Cone & Coffee along the way; their fresh huckleberry is a summer favorite. Turn the corner on Bridge Street, and head under the overpass out to City Beach to enjoy some fun in the sun along the beach, stroll the winding paths or take a photo with the iconic Sandpoint Statue of Liberty—the town’s own miniature Lady Liberty. Winter, spring, summer or fall, Sandpoint has much to offer and is an easy weekend’s drive to escape the city crowds and enjoy the natural beauty and small-town charm its locals love it for.

IRISH BREAD & BUTTER PUDDING Recipe & Photo Courtesy of Stephanie Lynn Gertrude Brown Yield: One 9x13” Pan

INGREDIENTS: ½ cup melted butter 1 medium-size loaf white bread or Brioche ½ cup raisins or dried fruit ¼ cup Irish whiskey 1 cup heavy cream 1 ½ cups whole milk 8 oz. cream cheese 4 eggs ½ cup granulated sugar ½ tsp. cinnamon

METHOD:

• First things first, your raisins need to get drunk. Place the raisins in a bowl and add the whiskey to cover them. Let sit at room temperature for at least two hours, but the longer the better. • Preheat your oven to 325°F. While the oven is heating up, use melted butter to coat a 9x13” baking dish. • Cut the bread loaf in 1-inch thick slices, and generously butter both sides. Place bread in the prepared pan by either cutting into cubes, or for a bit of a fancier approach, shingle in the whole slices in a single layer by overlapping the slices. • Place the pan into the oven for 7 to 10 minutes to lightly toast the bread. • While your bread is getting a glorious tan, place the milk, heavy cream and cream cheese into a saucepan. Slowly stir over a medium-low heat until the cream cheese is melted and combined. • In a separate bowl, combine the eggs, sugar and cinnamon. Once the milk mixture is ready, slowly add to egg mixture a little at a time, mixing well before each new addition. • Once the milk and egg mixtures are fully combined, pour two-thirds of the amount into the pan over the toasted bread. Set aside for 15 to 20 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard mixture. • Remember those tipsy raisins? Strain out the raisins, being sure to save the whiskey. Sprinkle the raisins over the bread and custard mixture. • Pour remaining custard over the raisins. Place pan into the oven and cook for 1 hour until the custard is puffed up and set. The top should be slightly browned as well. • Remove from the oven and serve immediately. Serving options: Top with fresh whipped cream or use the drunken raisin whiskey to make a delicious caramel sauce!

Annual Film Fest Returns By Colin Anderson

HOURS OF

CREATION March

22 Big time Hollywood movies can take years to complete. For an upcoming film festival here in Gig Harbor, filmmakers will have a total of three days to write, direct, shoot and edit a finished piece of cinema. The 72-Hour Film Competition, put on by the Gig Harbor Film Festival, is both hectic and incredibly rewarding for its participants. There will be approximately 35 entries in this year’s competition. Age categories are 13 and younger, 14 to 18, and 19 years of age and older. In early March each participant gets a crash course in basic filmmaking, as well as helpful information and instruction from local film industry professionals. When the clock strikes 6pm on Thursday, March 12, each group is given their instructions, and the 72-hour countdown begins. Organizers will reveal to each group certain elements that must appear in their film, and all production elements need to be completed by the deadline of 6pm on Sunday, March 15.

GigHarborLivingLocal.com

Once the films are all submitted, local filmmakers can take a deep breath while judges begin reviewing each film. The most fun day of the event is a week after submission when each of the films will be shown on the Galaxy Gig Harbor IMAX screen. The public is welcome to join and view the films, which are scheduled for screening from 9am to noon on Sunday, March 22. After the films are shown there is a brief intermission in the theater lobby where refreshments will be served. Guests are then invited back in and the winners are awarded. Categories include: Best Film, Best Actor and Best Ensemble in each age category. There is also an award and $500 cash prize for the best overall winner. As a bonus, winning films will be included in the Fall Film Festival and shown alongside award-winning independent films from around the world. For additional information, visit GigHarborFilm.org and click on ‘Upcoming Events.’

MARCH 7 11 am to 2 pm | Chapel Presbyterian Church AltrusaGigHarbor.org This year’s Empty Bowls event takes place 11am to 2pm at Chapel Presbyterian Church, 7700 Skansie Avenue, in Gig Harbor. Potters from the region have worked all year to create beautiful soup bowls while a dozen or more local restaurants (including BBQ2U, Table 47, Morso, Sunset Grill, Devoted Kiss Cafe and Lunchbox Laboratory) prepare their signature soups to serve. The community then comes together to purchase a bowl, receive a simple meal of soup and bread, and know that their purchase will help feed thousands of meals to hungry kids next summer when local schools are out.
