ust last month we were still relishing the winter months, enjoying our time spent indoors, warm by the fire, embracing the cold, wet, snowy days knowing that this time would soon pass, and the promise of spring would be fulfilled. March is here, and spring (at least in name) is just around the corner. As the clouds clear, the weather warms and the earth begins to once again come to life all around us, it ignites a light in us that has been dimmed the past several months. It is incredible to witness the changing of the season and the power it holds in lifting our spirits and our hopes for tomorrow. As we prepare for that spring cleaning, outdoor gardening and home remodel projects, be sure to enjoy—and embrace— the work. It is truly fulfilling to sit back, relax, and take in all that has been accomplished.
living space, sprucing up your space is sure to brighten up your spirit and attitude. In this issue, we are also taking the opportunity to celebrate our anniversary, as we continue to have the privilege of creating and delivering Gig Harbor Living Local to the community. Since 2014, we have been so fortunate to continue to be an integral part of this community, and we’ve decided now is as good a time as any to celebrate! As Leo Tolstoy said, "Spring is the time of plans and projects." Now’s the time to start preparing for the warmer—and brighter— months ahead.

THIS MONTH’S COVER PHOTO WAS TAKEN IN THE HARBOR NEAR TIDES TAVERN. As 2021 marks the seven-year anniversary of Gig Harbor Living Local’s premiere issue, this special cover is a drone shot of Julie Reed on her kayak in an early morning quest for peace and a reflective moment. She had the harbor to herself, with the exception of a seal, who happened to be a little camera shy. The shallow shot gives the definition with translucent underwater floor rocks and interesting color patterns. Here’s to many more years of Gig Harbor Living Local.

Stepping into Spring SPRING CLEANING OUR MINDSET By Jennifer “Taz” Vazquez
S
pring is a lovely time of the year, isn’t it? Full of promises, new beginnings and hope. Many of us take time to spring clean by organizing our house, garage, and preparing our gardens. Turns out spring is an excellent time to consider cleaning out our mental spaces too.
We often forget to declutter the most important part of our lives— our mind! Clutter accumulates around the house, leaving us feeling disorganized and uninspired. So too can mental clutter, such as negative thoughts, leave us feeling stuck, uninspired, depressed and/or anxious. For example, after a year of COVID-19 and the winter weather, maybe you feel you don’t have control over what’s going on in your life. Maybe you feel annoyed by everyone being under the same roof, or by what others are saying or doing. Maybe you want to work out but feel guilty because you feel it is selfish to take time away from your family.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
This got me thinking, what if you could make a few mindset shifts and turn over a springtime “new leaf ” on life? Just like spring cleaning your house can leave you feeling more calm and in control, so does spending a little time doing a mental clearing out of unhelpful or destructive thoughts. It is like organic weed killer. It will leave you feeling more energized to create a fertile ground for new ideas, new projects, self-care, and reconnect with those you care about in an authentic and centered way. You can have more control, inner peace, joy and creativity if you focus on this spring cleaning tip: Notice when you are blaming, complaining and imitating, then shift your mindset from what isn’t working to what is. Blaming others keeps you stuck in a negative mindset and thinking others have control. Instead, focus on what you can do. Acknowledge

Where your attention goes is where your energy flows. that you/they are doing the best you/they can based on what you/they know. Then curiously ask yourself what could you do to find a solution. Complaining keeps you focused on the negative and leaves you feeling unsatisfied. Instead, be empathetic and solution focused. It is okay to acknowledge the negative thoughts and feelings (it calms our inner critic) but then shift to curiously ask what can I say that is helpful, specific, and does it have a positive solution or outcome? Imitating others or feeling you have to hide parts of who you are for fear of being judged or not liked undermines your self-esteem. Instead, Just Do You. We are all unique and have gifts to share. When we show up authentically, we feel more alive, genuine and energized. Others will respect you and your boundaries, if you do. So, take a minute and ask yourself, where in your life have you felt: overwhelmed; ruminated about what you could or should have done;

blamed others; felt frustrated with what others were saying and doing; or tried to please others at your expense? Then remember, where your attention goes is where your energy flows. If you want to have more control, inner peace, joy and creativity in your life, then focus on shifting your mindset from what isn’t working to what is. Just a little mental spring cleaning keeps those weeds away. Where in your life could you use some spring cleaning? “I help you discover what sets your soul on fire. Slow and Steady Wins the Race GETTING DIVORCED? DON’T RUSH IT! By Felicia Soleil, Attorney/Mediator “Nature does not hurry. Yet everything is accomplished.” Lao Tzu You may wonder what the cycles of nature have to do with divorce. However, if you can think of divorce as a life transition, rather than a stand-alone event in itself, the nature analogy springs to life. (Pardon the pun. It’s that time of year!) As a divorce mediator and lawyer for almost three decades, the biggest mistakes I see with separating and divorcing couples involve rushing. Rushing their decision to separate before thinking through all the implications; making hasty financial decisions with the potential to create unnecessary hardship; rushing the kids into new schedules without giving consideration to practicalities. What spurs some clients to want to push through decisions about their divorce while others take a more thoughtful (slow) approach? My experience shows me it’s the unwillingness to feel the negative emotions that go along with such a major life transition, whether that transition is something they want or not. (There’s something behind the expression, “Now is the winter of my discontent …”) It often goes like this. One partner announces they want to divorce. The other partner is hurt, angry, anxious and overwhelmed, perhaps wanting to work on the marriage longer. Perhaps they’ve had little, if any, time to process the separation while the initiating partner has likely been thinking about it and planning for months. Both parties want to minimize sharing the angst of this transition, often wanting to “rip off the band aid” and get it over with, under the false impression doing so will make all the pain go away quickly. But they usually discover, like with all natural transitions, the evolution of their problem-solving and healing has a natural beginning, middle and end, despite their attempts at control. interwoven with the “business” issues to be tackled, such as houses, retirement funds, bank accounts, insurance and daily parenting. (Of course, many people also assign emotional components to these issues.) Hurrying through decision-making on any of these issues before all relevant data can be gathered, analyzed, and options explored can, and often will, backfire. However, recognizing that “to everything there is a season” allows you to understand and better tolerate the “winter,” knowing that “spring” is around the corner when forward movement and idea generation can be allowed to grow. My idea of “summer” during this process is when well thought-out solutions have been agreed upon and implemented, while “autumn” is full resolution and a time to put things to bed, with healthy closure. The most successful clients I work with are ones who are willing to recognize and accept there are negative emotions at play; emotions that will sabotage their outcome if not managed well. This means making a commitment to endure this “rough patch,” hiring good professional help when needed, and knowing patience and thoughtfulness will lead to the best settlements for everyone involved. A chapter is closing in the arc of a life, whether that chapter was five-years, 20-years or 40-years long. It needs to be closed with care, consideration, and often creativity. To do that well takes time. Maybe you’ll find, as Albert Camus said, “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO DOUBLE MY MONEY? The ‘Rule of 72’ Courtesy of Nancy Harris, CMFC, CDFA President, Financial Planner, New Foundation Wealth Group
B
efore making any investment decision, one of the key elements you face is working out the real rate of return on your investment.
With simple interest, interest is paid just on the principal. With compound interest, the return that you receive on your initial investment is automatically reinvested. In other words, you receive interest on the interest. But just how quickly does your money grow? The easiest way to work that out is by using the “Rule of 72.”1 The Rule of 72 enables you to determine how long it will take for the money you've invested on a compound interest basis to double. You divide 72 by the interest rate to get the answer. For example, if you invest $10,000 at 10 percent compound interest, then the Rule of 72 states that in 7.2 years you will have $20,000. You divide 72 by 10 percent to get the time it takes for your money to double. The Rule of 72 is a rule of thumb that gives approximate results. It is most accurate for hypothetical rates between 5 and 20 percent.

While compound interest is a great ally to an investor, inflation is one of the greatest enemies. The Rule of 72 can also highlight the damage that inflation can do to your money. The real rate of return is the key to how quickly the value of your investment will grow. If you are receiving 10 percent interest on an investment but inflation is running at 4 percent, then your real rate of return is 6 percent. In such a scenario, it will take your money 12 years to double in value.
The Rule of 72 is a quick and easy way to determine the value of compound interest over time. By taking the real rate of return into consideration (nominal interest less inflation), you can see how soon a particular investment will double the value of your money. The Rule of 72 is a mathematical concept, and the hypothetical return illustrated is not representative of a specific investment. Also note that the principal and yield of securities will fluctuate with changes in market conditions so that the shares, when sold, may be worth more or less than their original cost. The Rule of 72 does not include adjustments for income or taxation. It assumes that interest is compounded annually. Actual results will vary. hen the location of the service you provide your community is found in schools and they suddenly close, how do you continue to meet that need? That was the question facing Food Backpacks 4 Kids one year ago. Started in 2009, the program has greatly expanded from handing out a few backpacks stuffed with non-perishable food from a church parking lot, to sending home hundreds of packs each week all throughout schools across the Key Peninsula and Gig Harbor. Before schools were officially closed, the board and volunteers were already planning the next move and, because of that planning, were able to continue their mission to meet the nutritional needs of hungry children in local schools at times when other resources are not available. “As soon as schools closed, within an hour we flipped our entire process and were now a drive-up food distribution organization,” explained Office Administrator Michelle Johnson. Michelle came to the organization a few years back after retiring from the fire department. She began as a volunteer, and when an opening in the organization
became available, jumped at the opportunity to take on a larger role. Part of what appealed to Michelle about Food Backpacks 4 Kids was that the nonprofit was always brainstorming and thinking outside the box—something that came in very handy when the pandemic first shut down schools and increased demand for food. “We went from an anonymous program with the backpacks to now asking people to trust us in the drive-up model, and they did,” she said. In the beginning, some 400-plus families would visit one of the three drive-up food distribution centers including the Peninsula Marketplace location in Gig Harbor. With many of the volunteers aged 65 and older, it was challenging at first to find people who could operate safely and lift heavy boxes of food. Once word spread, however, many local teachers and a few students as well stepped up to help their students and classmates. “It was great for families to see a familiar face when they pulled up to get their box,” said Michelle. While the rush at the beginning has tapered off some, Food Backpacks 4 Kids continues to serve

roughly 200 families, including 550 children, each week. During the week, approximately 8,000 pounds of food is moved around between deliveries and packing up the boxes for pickup. On Wednesdays, deliveries are taken in and sorted onto shelves. The organization is able to supply the food through a combination of monetary donations from volunteers, individuals and businesses, grants and supplemental government programs. Depending on what is received, a meal plan is developed in order to maximize use of items found in each weekly food box. When the organization was just sending backpacks home, they could only include non-perishable items, but with the drive-by system, it can now include milk, meat and fresh produce. “It’s wonderful, as we are able to expand our offerings and feed our families better with more nutritional foods,” explained Michelle. While there are many volunteers to help with the various tasks it takes to put this grand distribution together each week, young people are a major part of it. Local high school students help with the prep on Wednesdays and the distribution on Fridays as part of course credit for certain classes. Food Backpacks 4 Kids also partners with Communities in Schools, which provides young people and recent graduates in crisis with mentoring and job training. These participants work key roles in the warehouse learning supply chain and business operation skills, while also having a huge impact on the community around them.

little wiggle room for other expenses like a utility bill or car payment,” Michelle said. Michelle confirms that tears are shed each week, for many different reasons. “We have a woman who has a family, recently took in her nephews, works full time and still volunteers with us. She is just getting by but also still giving back, and the food we provide her gives her that little bit of breathing room, which is what it’s all about.”
On Fridays, volunteers begin preparations in the morning so they are ready to welcome those in need when they open up at 3pm. Those in attendance don’t just drop a box in a trunk and send them on their way, but rather check up on families weekly to assess their situation and see if they are getting the help they need. Participants come from all walks of life.
With schools likely to return to more in-person learning, Backpacks 4 Kids is planning to adapt as well. It’s seen great success with the drive-up model and will continue to do so to meet community needs. Another area it will pick back up is the food pantries it stocks in area middle and high schools. If teachers or counselors are made aware of a hungry student, they can bring them to the pantry for supplies in a more private manner, helping to eliminate any of the potential “stigma” bringing home a backpack of food might cause for young people.
“We have families working two jobs, and their income doesn’t qualify them for any additional assistance. This food provides them with a

Renew. Refresh. Revive. Weightless relaxation awaits BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

I
t was 1996 when Jessie Puryear first came to Tacoma, Washington, while on active duty in the Navy. During his 22 years of service, he underwent multiple back surgeries and quickly discovered that with chronic pain came anxiety. “For me, the anxiety came from the physical toll my job entailed and how my back was going to respond and the fear of re-injury,” shares Jessie. “I learned about floating and did my first float in 2015. I immediately realized what a powerful tool it was.” With this realization and newfound knowledge, Jessie made it a goal to figure out a way in which to educate the general public and get them to try it. “I knew once people had the opportunity, they would see its value and want to incorporate into their wellness routine.” In November of 2018, Jessie opened Urban Float in University Place. Here he is proud to provide flotation therapy, infrared sauna and red light therapy services to his clientele. “Most people are still unfamiliar with floatation therapy and why they should incorporate it into their wellness routine,” he says. “In a nutshell, we provide an environment that allows the removal of gravity, light and sound stimulation, and tactile touch sensations.” For those unacquainted with this revolutionary treatment, Urban Float offers private suites that have a float pod containing 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt in 200 gallons of water, all heated to the temperature of your skin (95.5°F). As Jessie

shares, floating in this environment allows the part of the brain, known as the amygdala—where the fight or flight response originates—to shut off. The effects are similar to those who use the drug lorazepam for anxiety but without any of the side effects. The effects from a float can last up to 36 hours; longer than any medication can provide. “Our clients report it is one of the most relaxing experiences of their lives. The weightless environment also provides great relief for chronic pain clients. Removing gravity allows the body to realign itself, and clients report dramatic reductions in their pain levels post float,” affirms Jessie. Urban Float also features infrared sauna, one of the “hottest” therapies for overall healthier living. Infrared light has the ability to penetrate human tissue, which in turn produces a host of anti-aging health benefits— making infrared saunas one of the “hottest” therapies for overall healthier living. “Because infrared sauna therapy heats the body directly rather than simply warming the air, it raises the core body temperature and produces a deep, detoxifying sweat at the cellular level, where most toxins reside,” says Jessie. “In addition, far infrared saunas aid in blood pressure reduction and weight loss, burning up to 600 calories in one session!” Red light adds another holistic modality for those looking to improve their appearance naturally, according to Jessie. “Red light works at the cellular level on the mitochondria (powerhouse) of our cells. Red light is research backed and proven to increase collagen and elastin production
in cells, which is great for softening fine lines and wrinkles. It will also help reduce the effects on the skin from rosacea, hyperpigmentation and acne. We also have seen benefits in chronic pain relief when used regularly.” Jessie is proud to be able to offer these services in one location, where he and his staff are able to provide clients relief from anxiety, stress, PTSD and chronic pain—all without the use of pharmaceuticals—as well as help those seeking to refine their appearance in a safe, natural way. When it comes to what he finds most rewarding about being able to provide a space to help others heal, he shares that it’s seeing the dramatic change before and after the float. “It's obvious when some of our clients come in, they are suffering physically and mentally, and to see the dramatic change in as little as one session is awesome,” smiles Jessie. “They’ll go into the suite, and it seems like the weight of the world is on them, and 60 minutes later you can't get the ear-to-ear smile off their face.” It’s a team effort at Urban Float, and Jessie credits a majority of their success to his employees. “They all truly love helping our clients and believe in the relief floating can provide.” Jessie and his team invite you to renew, refresh and revive your body— and mind—at Urban Float. or those who live here in Gig Harbor, we know how truly special this place is that we all have chosen to call home. This community is filled with kind, generous, giving people, who care deeply for this place and all those who live here.
It was seven years ago that a new publication would be released, sharing positive stories highlighting all that’s wonderful right here in the harbor, along with the incredible local businesses that help in sustaining this small—yet thriving—maritime city. With just eight weeks to drum up excitement, plan content, connect with businesses, develop distribution points and to gain support with advertisers, it was no easy feat. But Julie Reed was ready for the challenge. “Preparing the release of the first issue of Gig Harbor Living Local seemed like a challenge I had never faced in my career before. The process and steps that needed to be fulfilled for our first print release were insurmountable,” she recalls. “Nothing 36

Tim Lopez of Tim Lopez Agency - American Family Insurance, had been in business for seven years at the time Julie approached him about advertising in the premiere issue. He says he was inspired to take part in the publication because of Julie, their friendship and his confidence in her vision for the magazine. Over the years, their business relationship has grown stronger, and Tim is encouraged by Julie’s knowledge of the local community and their shared concern for the well-being of the community and local businesses. “I feel there is value in the visibility that the magazine provides to my small business, in terms of being at the forefront of local people’s minds when they shop for auto, home, life and business insurance,” shares Tim. “Also, [I’ve 38

enjoyed] being able to continue to work with Julie all these years.” For Sue Wilhelm, campus sales and marketing director for Harbor Place at Cottesmore, “Being rooted in Gig Harbor, we were excited to participate in a publication for our hometown!” The two initially met when Julie stopped by Harbor Place with the Gig Harbor Living Local concept magazine. Sue recalls being impressed with the quality and local content of the Living Local magazines already being published in Idaho at the time. “Since then, Julie joined Gig Harbor Chamber with me and has been a wonderful resource for other Chamber and Gig Harbor community members,” smiles Sue. “She’s very creative, energetic and resourceful!”
Having conversations about business and stemming from that conversations about life and family with her advertisers has brought Julie to a closer understanding of how to help them achieve what they are looking for. That deep understanding on a personal level has aided her in becoming a better resource and guide in making important business decisions. Dr. Greg Messner, owner of Gig Harbor Chiropractic and Massage, is another loyal advertiser who was on board with the publication since its inception. He liked the fact that Julie is a longtime local and that she and the rest of the Living Local team are easy to talk to and work with. He says he has remained a loyal client because of the fair pricing and the publication’s high quality.
“We like local business and local companies and group local marketing,” says Greg. “We know and do business with many other local companies in the publication.” Julie shared the concept of this new publication with Sandy and Gary Jones, Realtors at Windermere Real Estate Gig Harbor/Downtown, toward the end of 2013. “We immediately wanted in on this amazing opportunity to advertise our business,” says Sandy. “Our involvement with Living Local over the years has increased our business, expanded our community connections and business relationships.” The couple echoes many of the same sentiments that so many of Julie’s clients share. “We appreciate and enjoy Julie’s stellar communication, creativity, professionalism and unsurpassed customer service.”
partner network within the real estate community,” Debbie affirms. Julie shares that she is most proud of the relationships that have been forged and the responsibility the magazine has taken to provide positive only content and the expansion of the quality of the magazine. She is also proud of her Gig Harbor Living Local team. “Our design and creative team, photography and writing have come leaps and bounds from where we started. We were a young magazine that has matured and blossomed! I am truly humbled to be surrounded by a community brimming with intellect and talent.”
A desire to increase her business opportunities in the community is what led Debbie Mishko of American Pacific Mortgage to pursue advertising opportunities with the magazine. She shares that Julie provides “personal, concierge service,” and that she is “bright, creative, responsive and innovative.”

I feel we all need to get back to identifying as people, community members, husbands, fathers, wives, mothers, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters, and not red or blue, pro or against. “We need to get back to uniting around our commonalities rather than dividing up over our few differences. It is hope that drives us each day because together we are strong and powerful. Hope pushes us to be better versions of ourselves.” Like Media carries out its mission in a number of ways: telling the good news stories that don’t always make the news and spotlighting the people who do wonderful things within our communities; highlighting and sponsoring local events; supporting small-medium local businesses by providing them an affordable platform to share their messaging; and most importantly providing free marketing sponsorships for local nonprofit organizations. Each and every month, Like Media sponsors area nonprofits, organizations, groups and community members in each publication to help ensure they are able to carry out their mission. Since its inception, Like Media has been committed to connecting local businesses with the people they serve, with the goal of impacting communities in a positive way. The Northwest’s trusted media partner, Like Media is dedicated to taking companies where they want to go through effective and thoughtful strategies that combine traditional media with new technologies.

With 29 years in print and over eight years in the digital marketing sphere, Like Media successfully provides a platform and voice for local companies to reach their target audiences in the most effective way, while saving time and money, and building successful businesses that strengthen communities. “We are building a unique platform that serves dual purposes, which allows small to medium businesses to effectively build their marketing and brands locally while supporting local philanthropic groups and organizations. There is nothing quite like this in the communities we serve,” Steve says. “What our advertisers should know is that we are actually partners in promoting the goodwill not only locally but in every town we serve. The support they give locally goes well beyond our city boundaries by helping many in need.” Today, Julie and the Like Media team continue what they set out to do since the beginning: to impact the community they serve in a positive way. “I am filled with the utmost gratitude to my loyal advertisers and feel indebted to them for helping me do what I love and supporting me in my personal quest to create a community magazine,” Julie shares. “Without them, I would be nowhere. ig Harbor High School freshman Richard Roppolo admits he is one to procrastinate. It’s something he’s working on, and the distance learning environment is helping him redouble his efforts. “In order to combat this, I’ve set multiple alarms on my phone reminding me, I’ve placed all my homework and school work in the same place where it is very visible from every corner of my room, and I’ve gotten my mom to nag me about it from time to time,” Richard said. It seems to be working as he continues to keep his goal of maintaining all As and Bs. Though only in his freshman year, Richard had some experience at the high school before his ninth-grade year. He enjoys theater production and has been involved with the high school program for several years now. “I’ve been the head of sound for the three productions: the 2019 One Acts Festival, the 2019 fall play The Man Who Came to Dinner,
and the 2020 spring musical Les Misérables,” he explained. Richard very much enjoys the challenges of the theater and is thankful that he was given the opportunity to participate at a young age. “Ms. Zetterstrom is the teacher that has had the largest impact on my life by far. Despite me being a middle schooler, she welcomed me into her theater with open arms. She gave me a place where I could belong and an opportunity to learn new and valuable skills. I doubt there’s any teacher out there who could ever do as much for me as she.” When he’s not perfecting sound in the theater, Richard enjoys STEM courses, especially math. “I enjoy finding different approaches to problems and learning new skills to tackle equations I would’ve never known how to solve otherwise. I also enjoy the logical reasoning aspect of it,” he explained. Richard hopes to return to in-person learning, to see friends and teachers again, and for a small sense of normalcy. While he can envision himself landing a career in a STEM field, he still has plenty of time and many experiences that will help shape his adult life.

“Technology will continue to impact every area of our lives, and I would like to be a part of developing that technology to hopefully make a meaningful contribution to others.” The 17-year-old is also very active in student government, which she first started participating in back in middle school. Audrey served as a class senator in ninth and 10th grade, and now serves as the secretary this year. She is also president of the National Honor Society chapter at Peninsula. While these keep her quite busy, she still dedicates a great deal of her time to improving her community. She’s volunteered more than 400 hours and for the past two years lead the school’s annual food drive, which has delivered more than 6,000 pounds of food to the local food banks.

A
s Peninsula High School senior Audrey Krishnadasan is preparing for her final few months of high school, she, like many, is still hopeful for at least a few things that would otherwise seem normal. “I hope we get to come back to PHS before the year is out,” she said. “I want to have Fishbowl and wear my PHS colors with pride for a fifthyear victory. I want a PHS softball season, to speak in front of our class at an assembly, have prom with all my friends and, of course, graduate together as a class in spring.” Audrey has made the absolute most of her high school experience, even as her senior year is done remotely. She’s competed in varsity softball, and her traveling team, the Sundodgers, has traveled the country yearround for tournaments. While she waits to see if there will be a senior season, she continues to prep in hopes of playing softball at the college level.
Audrey has always been interested in math and computer science, which she plans to continue to study in the future. “Technology will continue to impact every area of our lives, and I would like to be a part of developing that technology to hopefully make a meaningful contribution to others,” she said.

Her favorite teacher is her computer science teacher Ms. Nichols, whom she calls inspiring, challenging Audrey to never settle. “Ms. Nichols, who I often refer to as ’Nics,’ sincerely cares about all her students and wants them to enjoy the work that they are doing. I always look forward to attending computer science class because I know Nics will be there to cheer me up.” In a senior year that would be described as anything but normal, Audrey and others like her continue to make the most of the situation. For the bulk of the school year she and three of her closest friends have been getting together, at an appropriate distance, to do online courses together. “While we are not roaming the halls with all our classmates, being with these three every day has made a very special year for me so far,” she said.

100 YEARS OF BOATING HISTORY The BoatShop at Eddon Boatyard perpetuates skills and traditions of a working waterfront BY ABIGAIL THORPE

n 2003, plans were introduced to demolish the Eddon Boatyard, which had fallen into disrepair, and replace it with a gated community. What could have been the end of an historic Gig Harbor landmark became a new beginning, as four community members rallied behind the boatyard and presented an alternative plan to preserve the site and its history.

back to its early beginnings and the boating and fishing industry that is foundational to Gig Harbor. The Gig Harbor BoatShop, which moved into the restored Eddon Boatyard in 2010, is central to the preservation of this history, delivering hands-on boat building and skills-based programming to community members and visitors.
“Four supporters grew to dozens and ultimately hundreds,” recalls BoatShop President Guy Hoppen. The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation issued a grant to help with community outreach, and ultimately through the support of elected officials and the community, a bond was issued to save Eddon Boatyard in November of 2004.
“Boats being built and repaired at the Eddon Boatyard secures a use at the historic site that is over a century old,” explains Hoppen. “The nonprofit Gig Harbor BoatShop providing the community at large and our guests opportunities to experience that craft and heritage through events and programming broadens the cultural impact of that history and assures that skills and knowledge is passed down.”

Today, Eddon Boatyard serves as a working waterfront that harkens back to its early beginnings and the boating and fishing industry that is foundational to Gig Harbor.
the craft of wooden boat building has resulted in a thriving educational hub that perpetuates the working waterfront skills, uses and traditions that have marked this area for generations.
continued to run the boatyard, and over its 28 years in business in Gig Harbor, thousands of boats were repaired and dozens of new boats launched, most notably the first 26-foot Thunderbird sailboats.
Back in 1920, Norwegian immigrant Conrad Anderson first founded the Anderson Boat Co. at the site where Eddon Boatyard sits today. The company built mostly commercial fishing vessels—the purse seiner Equator is still owned by his great grandson today. In the 1940s, the boatyard passed over to Art Glein, who built the existing buildings when he opened the Glein Boat Company.
Breck Adams purchased the yard in 1978, when it became Blue Heron Yachts, after which the boatyard became investor owned in the mid-‘80s, when it remained a boat repair facility, but ceased to be owner-operated, and eventually fell into disrepair.
After the freeze of 1950, Ed Hoppen and Don Harder of Eddon Boat Company in Tacoma purchased the property, and so began Eddon Boat Company. The partnership didn’t remain, but Ed and his wife Marty 46

space will be used for year-round programming by the BoatShop for years to come, as well as being available for small community gatherings and meetings. The marine railways, the final step in the restoration process and a critical piece of infrastructure, are expected to be completed this coming summer, allowing for movement of boats to and from the water, and the start of an historic vessel documentation program and a boat repair training program. The Eddon Boatyard is currently operated as a boat building and repair facility, just as it was originally designed for. The BoatShop offers a range of programs for locals and visitors, including tours of the 63-foot purse seiner Veteran, a Family Boat Building Program where participants learn to build a 12-foot skiff in two days, and a host of other workshops. While the BoatShop closed during the pandemic to help protect the health of the community, they hope to resume classes and programs as 2021 unfolds, and will populate the website with program updates as they move through the spring and summer. “We look forward to resuming our successful menu of public programs as the public health crisis is brought under control,” explains Hoppen. 48

“Among the most exciting new offerings is ‘Mini Boat School,’ where six participants will help build a carvel-planked motor launch in a 12-week, three-days per week class. We hope to begin in late summer, early fall.” The BoatShop also plans to continue expanding its programming on the Veteran to include waterfront excursions and portions of a commercial fishing crew training program. “‘If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who you are,’ writes Wallace Stegner in The Sense of Place. To those of us that have lived here for 20 years or more, Stegner’s voice rings familiar,” reflects Hoppen. “The community casting their ballots to save the Eddon Boatyard was at least, in part, a vote to secure a community ‘sense of place.’ Whether just gazing at the historic structure while walking by, accessing the waterfront to paddleboard, or participating in skills programs or events inside the boatyard, the community’s connection to the legacy and history of our working waterfront is secured. That’s important.” The BoatShop survives on the generosity of those who donate or attend programs, foundation grants, auction proceeds and the help of generous volunteers. Individuals and families are invited to get involved by volunteering, donating funds or items, and participating in events. To learn more, visit GigHarborBoatShop.org

It was golf that was the inspiration behind Dolly Mama Boutique. Years prior, Michelle had started a ladies’ golf and resort accessory line while living in Newport Beach, California. When moving back to Gig Harbor in 2009, she quickly built a following among her golf friends and neighbors. “They would stop by my studio to buy gifts and kept asking for more products,” Michelle recalls. “Finally, I decided it was time to open a brick-and-mortar store so that I could expand on my retail clientele. Gradually it developed into what it is today.” Just a few years after opening Dolly Mama Boutique, Michelle was inspired to open a second location in 2017. Providing customers the same exceptional experience and merchandise as its sister location, Dolly Mama Too, which is located in the heart of downtown by the waterfront (3133 Harborview Drive), offers similar items but with a coastal flair. Michelle and her staff serve not only those who walk through their doors but those in the greater community in which they live, working hard to support and give back to the many organizations, nonprofits, schools and clubs that can be found here. “We are also currently
promoting one local small business each month throughout 2021 in an effort to support the shop local trend that we hope continues.” Michelle shares that she has always enjoyed being a part of the local business community but that over the past year it has been especially incredible to see firsthand all of the local business owners supporting and encouraging one another. “It is very touching,” reflects Michelle. “We are so very lucky to have the Waterfront Alliance that continues to work hard to promote all of us, offer support and keep us all communicating and working together as a downtown team.” A lovely atmosphere paired with impeccable customer service, be ready to be welcomed and valued the moment you step through the door. “Shopping at Dolly Mama is fun—it is an experience,” adds Michelle. With spring just around the corner, it’s time to get shopping! If you’re looking to update your wardrobe, or your home, Michelle and The Dollies welcome you to stop in and explore the wonderful selections they have to offer. And for those who prefer shopping in the comfort of your own home, online shopping is available! GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BIRDS AND THE BEES Your sexual well-being By Conrad Esser, CEO and Nicholas Wyatt, CPO, Harbor Health LLC
S
exual well-being is a topic that frequently crosses our minds but rarely is talked about. With spring quickly approaching and Valentine’s Day barely in the rear view, a discussion about sexual well-being seems appropriate.
What is sexual well-being? Sexual well-being is very difficult to define. The definition has different meanings to each culture, subculture and individual. And believe it or not, sexual well-being is not just about sex. The American Sexual Health Association defines sexual well-being as the ability to enjoy our sexuality throughout our lives. With sexual well-being being such an important part of your physical and emotional health, how can you improve it? Communication The word can cause a cascade of emotions from excitement to anxiety and disappointment. You have likely experienced one if not all those emotions at some point in your life—and it will likely not be your last time you experience those emotions. So, how do you talk with your partner about sex and the emotions it causes?
Talking to your partner about sex can be one of the hardest conversations even under the best of circumstances. Conversations about sexual wellbeing can trigger feelings of hurt, shame and resentment between partners. How do you approach talking about this sensitive topic with your partner? First, find the right time to talk to your partner and remember, there are two types of sexual conversations. The ones you have in the bedroom and the ones you have outside the bedroom. Avoid criticizing your partner. Focus on the positives and find solutions to the negatives as a team rather than assigning blame. Your body changes. Be okay with the changes in your body and talking about those changes with your partner. Lastly, be honest. Conversations around sexual well-being will only be more difficult if you are not being honest with your partner about problems that are arising. And remember, your love for your partner and your partner's love for you does not equate with sexual performance. Love is more than just sex.

IT'S TIME TO GARDEN This month kicks off the official start to spring, which means it's time to get outdoors—and garden. Whether you're a pro or a novice, with a patio garden or a number of raised beds, gardening results in not only fresh, healthy foods for you to enjoy but creates happiness in the gardener as well. Here's to spring, gardening, health and happiness.

Nutrition/Supplements Nutrition and supplements can play an important role in maintaining a positive sexual well-being. François de la Rochefoucauld, a French novelist, said, "To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art." Eating intelligently is essential to sexual well-being. Foods that are calorie rich and nutrient deficient can lead to increased inflammation. Inflammation is important for the body to heal, and recover, but when inflammation becomes prolonged and chronic it can cause many health issues; disrupting hormone balance is one of them. For men, the typical response when lab tests indicate low testosterone is to supplement with testosterone replacement. Inflammation activates an enzyme in the body called aromatase, which can convert testosterone into estrogen; therefore, in this case, taking testosterone will not address the root issue. Taking more testosterone when the body is aromatizing can further the hormonal imbalance. A great natural supplement to down regulate the aromatase enzyme is Resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown to be a great antiinflammatory, as well as helping to inhibit aromatase. In women, a lot of inflammation can be due to digestive issues, blood sugar imbalances, and chronic stress that can affect hormonal balance. If women are not having regular bowel movements or have a sluggish detox pathway, this can cause hormones that should have been excreted to circulate back into the body. Chronic stress can also cause the body to stop producing the enzyme 17/20 lyase, which is important for the production of sex hormones. When women are experiencing hormonal imbalances, having a full metabolic workout is important to uncover the root cause of these issues. Speaking of digestive issue, could probiotics improve your sex life? Research has shown probiotics have the potential to improve your sexual well-being.
When talking about your gut health, we’re talking about the composition of the billions of bacteria, archaea and the fungi inside your gut. This is known as microbiome. Gut bacteria helps create B vitamins, which are essential for energy. Ninety-five percent of serotonin, the happiness hormone in the body, is produced from the gut. Lower serotonin levels are associated with lower sex drives. When our gut microbiome is unhealthy, it can lead to inflammation and fatigue among many other health issues. With both women and men, chronic stress is associated with dysbiosis in the gut, and the altered gut microbiota has been linked with adverse health effects such as inflammation, autoimmune disease, depression, anxiety and metabolic diseases. Research has suggested that probiotic therapy can open new avenues for treatment for sexual health. It is also noted that further study is warranted in order to identify potentially efficacious probiotic strains or multi-strain formulations for best effectiveness on each individual.

Zinc has also been shown to improve sexual well-being. Zinc helps produce key sex hormones, such as testosterone and prolactin. In men, zinc is vital to the development and function of the male sex organs. The recommended daily intake for zinc is 10 to 20 milligrams. Lastly, physical activity is an important healthy behavior that can not only benefit your sexual well-being but also offers other health benefits like reducing your risk to depression, diabetes and heart disease. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Here is to your best sexual well-being and happiness in 2021! One way we help our residents focus on healthy longevity of the body and mind is through our Ageless Grace® programming, which is a fitness and wellness program consisting of 21 seated exercise tools designed to address all five functions of the brain and improve cognition and neuroplasticity. Let’s dive into some common questions about Ageless Grace® and neuroplasticity. What is neuroplasticity? Neuroplasticity is defined as the ability of the brain to change and reorganize itself, allowing us to adapt to changes and experiences we may encounter throughout our life. Neuroplasticity also helps us learn new things and create connections between the regions of the brain, as well as help the brain recover from injury and create more effective learning. Does neuroplasticity decrease as we age? Neuroscientists used to think that the brain stopped developing at a young age and that any damage caused to the brain, such as a brain injury or damage caused by a stroke, was permanent. However, as research has continued in this area, scientists have uncovered quite the opposite belief; they have uncovered that the brain is an ever-learning, ever-changing and ever-growing machine that has the ability to heal and re-wire itself.
The human brain is highly dynamic, and while the rate of change in the brain (neuroplasticity) declines as we age, it does not come to a halt; there are still many things you can do to encourage and stimulate neuroplasticity as you age and help improve or slow cognitive decline. How does Ageless Grace® help increase neuroplasticity? Ageless Grace® helps to increase neuroplasticity by addressing all five functions of the brain: strategic planning, memory and recall, analytical thinking, creativity and imagination, and kinesthetic learning. This programming also offers a variety of other anti-aging benefits, such as improving joint mobility, balance, spinal flexibility, confidence and right-left brain coordination. Why is Ageless Grace® performed while seated in a chair? Ageless Grace® exercises are performed in a chair to help stimulate the brain as it figures out how to do the tools seated rather than standing. There are many modalities to get a refreshed and rejuvenated face, most importantly skin rejuvenation, Botox/Dysport, dermal fillers, etc. However, today, we are discussing the superstar biostimulator Sculptra Aesthetic. We want to smooth the skin and add back lost volume. Sculptra Aesthetic is an injectable treatment that works with your body to stimulate your own natural collagen growth. It is injected into the areas where there is fat loss and hollowing such as the temples, front of the ear and in the cheeks. It also works well in areas where there are laxity wrinkles and deep folds, such as the area in the mid-lower cheek and décolletage. Sculptra is different than a hyaluronic dermal filler such as Juvederm or Restylane because it is a poly-L-lactic biostimulator that addresses the underlying cause of aging skin from within—loss of collagen. Plump, healthy, youthful skin has lots of collagen and is the foundation for a radiant look. By helping stimulate natural collagen growth, Sculptra helps restore the structure in your skin by replacing the lost volume and smoothness. Sculptra restores the fullness and will refine wrinkles and folds with your own collagen. Your body builds a web matrix Before

of collagen support. This takes two to three sessions done approximately two months apart. What to Expect During consultation, we will go over the different options, discuss skin rejuvenation, products, your timeline and budget. Sculptra treatments are usually done in two or three sessions. In the first session, the liquid Sculptra is injected in areas needed and will initially look full, then the liquid absorbs and leaves the poly-L-lactic acid behind to stimulate your body to produce the collagen. Over the course of the following two to three months, you will see a gradual improvement. The second session is the same, again building more collagen. Depending on how much improvement is desired, a third session may be needed. Each treatment takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour. The most common side effects are tenderness and soreness at the injection site. There may also be bruising that will resolve in about a week. Long-Lasting Results After achieving your full correction, studies have shown that the results last for more than two years, and many clients see results for much longer. Eighty percent of men and women injected with Sculptra have rated their results “excellent.” Sculptra is a wonderful product to talk to your injector about. Ask Questions An expert injector will always look at your face from a standpoint of how to give the face more support, more balance, and will suggest a treatment plan that puts the curves back in the face in a way that looks natural. Also, be diligent and do your research on their experience and training. After
LET'S GET MOVING! THE BENEFITS OF EXERCISE AND TIPS TO MAXIMIZE THEM By Sarahlynn M. Etta, Yoga Teacher
T
he long-term health benefits of regular physical activity are numerous and varied, impacting all the body’s functions and systems.
Brain Power - The human brain is wired to move, and movement actually facilitates neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to adapt to change by forming new neural connections. Regular exercise increases cognitive function and improves attention, learning and memory. Mood Booster - Movement stimulates the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators, as well as neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. Physical activity elevates mood, increases self-esteem, decreases stress and anxiety, and reduces feelings of depression. Sound Sleep - Exercise supports the ability to fall asleep more quickly, as well as improving overall sleep quality. Moderate aerobic exercise seems to increase the amount of deep, restorative sleep. And many types of movement help to decompress the mind, facilitating an easier transition to sleep. Physical Health - Aerobic activity increases energy and improves metabolism while strengthening the heart and improving cardiovascular fitness, as well as lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Movement lubricates the joints, resistance and weight bearing exercises strengthen the bones, and standing activities improve balance. Lower intensity exercises can also help to reduce inflammation. Anti-Aging - People who exercise regularly show improved blood markers related to aging and also increased telomere length (an indicator of disease resistance and increased life span). Resistance training has moderate benefit, while endurance and high-intensity activities seem to show the most. Immune Function - Though the mechanisms are not clearly understood, regular movers seem to get sick less often and less severely. This could be because exercise increases blood and lymph flow, thus increasing the circulation of immune cells in the body. Regular exercise also potentially slows down changes that happen to the immune system with aging. Anti-Inflammatory - One way exercise may support immunity is its generation of antiinflammatory response in the body. The
paradox here is that extremely intense exercise can temporarily increase inflammation, in which case low-impact activity is preferred. To maximize the benefits of your movement: • Establish routines to help form habits. These benefits come with regular exercise. Strive to get in 150 minutes of movement each week, or five 30-minutes sessions. Strive for at least 20 minutes consecutively. • Engage in a variety of activities, including strength, stretch, cardio and balance. • Stay hydrated. Eat to fuel your body, but avoid heavy meals just before and just after exercise. • Take rests when you feel the need for them. • Avoid vigorous exercise right before bed. • Exercise with friends and loved ones to increase the release of oxytocin. • Exercise outdoors to stimulate the vagus nerve, which improves heart rate variability. • Engage in a mind-body practice such as qigong, tai chi or yoga to add the benefits of meditation and controlled breathing. If you experience very high stress, chronic inflammation or an autoimmune condition, you should also consider keeping intense workouts to less than one hour; exercise regularly (physical fitness decreases the amount of cortisol produced during exercise); take regular break and rest days; leave intense sessions to later in the day, when cortisol levels are lower; and focus on low-impact activities, such as swimming, walking, yoga and tai chi.

NAVIGATING THE
SLOPES MEET THE ARTIST WHO GUIDES YOUR WAY BY COLIN ANDERSON
G
rowing up on a small farm in Western Colorado, Jim Niehues’ love of the outdoors started early. Situated amongst 10,000-foot mountain peaks, and with red rock canyons and deserts within an hour drive, Jim was drawn to outdoor adventure. From a young age he was paddling the Colorado River and hiking and hunting with his brothers and father, all while mesmerized by the scenery around him. When he would come back from trips he would attempt to sketch and paint what he had seen firsthand, as well as his surroundings on the farm. “As a very young child I would draw the animals on the farm, and my mother figured I had some talent,” Jim recalled. An unfortunate bout with Nephritis in the ninth grade had Jim bed-ridden for three months, but it was during this unfortunate time that he would begin his painting journey, which would become his life’s work. “During this time, Mom bought me an oil painting set to help pass my time. My first landscapes were painted from magazines as I discovered what would be my lifetime passion.”

If you’re a skier, snowboarder, or have even just spent time in a lodge, there’s a good chance you’ve been impacted by Jim’s work. Millions of skiers and riders have posed alongside trail maps located at the base and summit of mountains across the globe. Eager planners pick up a trail map and devise a plan on where the best powder stashes might be, and how to maximize the amount of runs they can get in and still beat the lunch crowd back to the lodge. Few, however, have probably noticed the artist’s signature on these, but if you look close, you’ll likely find Jim Niehues. At 75, Jim is beginning to wind down the career he didn’t begin until he was 40. In his 20s and 30s, Jim held many jobs as an artist. He worked for an automotive company, did freelance graphic design work, and partnered in a small ad agency in Grand Junction, Colorado. He met his second wife, Dora, and in 1984 the couple moved to Denver, each with two kids, in hopes of settling down. As Jim struggled to make ends meet he went back to his interest in painting outdoor scenery and reached out to Bill Brown, one of the original ski map artists. “He liked my portfolio and gave

me a small project, which he had some time before it was due, in case he had to repaint my attempt. I worked hard to mimic Bill’s technique, and my version was used by the client,” said Jim. The small inset was featured by Winter Park Resort in its 1987-1988 ski map. As luck would have it, Brown wanted to move on to other ventures and began handing over client map inquiries to Jim. “I was on to a whole new career at the age of 40 … and I couldn’t ski,” he laughed. Jim would learn and take on the same hand-painting process used by pioneers like Bill Brown and Hal Shelton. He has since completed more than 430 maps across five continents, and each one is painted by hand. As one would imagine, the detail needed to accurately portray an entire ski mountain requires an immense amount of information. This involves gathering hundreds and often thousands of aerial photographs. Jim is often at the resort to capture the images himself and recalls the first few trips as quite the learning experience. “My first trip on assignment was terrifying. I was doing everything for the first time for real; client meetings, aerial photography, composing and painting the mountain, and delivering the finished product. I remember departing at the airport hoping I had everything I needed for the project; was I forgetting something?” Today’s technology has vastly improved the amount of detail he can capture. When he was getting started in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the process was more drawn out. “In the early days it was a film 35mm camera. The film camera meant carrying 10 rolls of 36 exposure film from home, finding a developer on location, reviewing the 4x6-inch photos with the client during the visit and returning with all the prints for reference,” explained Jim. “Once in New Zealand I lost a roll of film from the helicopter as it rolled out the open door.” Now armed with a 24meg Nikon D7100, Jim gets incredibly high-resolution photos, which he can bring back to his studio and begin the sketching process. “When I shoot a resort I start with a sweep about 1,000 feet above the summit, high enough to get the entire resort at 50mm or so on the zoom. After taking various angles at that altitude, I will drop the plane to 500 feet

above the summit and zoom into the top sections of the mountain for the detail and then drop to mid-mountain to capture the lower sections and base. When I review all these views I will pick the best to create the full perspective and draw a comprehensive sketch.” Once he reviews these aerials and any other material he can get hold of, Jim will sketch out the scene for the client’s approval. Once the sketch is approved it is transferred/traced to the painting surface. “I use gouache watercolor that is easy to remove and repaint for future alterations and expansions, and I paint on an illustration board that is prepared with gesso so the paint will not soak into the board.” After another approval, the final painting is taken to a photo lab for the scan. Jim then works on these scans to touch up areas and tweak the color. The scan is then uploaded to Dropbox and the link sent to the client for downloading. The client or their graphics people will put the trail names and symbols on the image. For Jim, the greatest challenge is getting all slopes of a complex mountain in one flat representation of the real-life multi-faceted scene. It takes a lot of manipulation of the elements to connect all trails but keep them relative to each other to show all sides. All efforts are made to keep all runs running down-page, especially the steepest runs. “Many different perspectives flow together to create the final composition that will effectively navigate the skier to different parts of the mountain,” he said. Once the sketch is approved, all the detail must be transferred exactly onto the painting surface. The airbrush is then used to paint the sky and all the snow’s undulating surfaces. Steeper slopes usually are shaded to set them apart from the easier runs. The tree shadows on the snow are added next. The trees are the most time-consuming part of the painting. “I have developed a technique that is creating a tree-like texture then rewetting the color to blend and adding the highlights and shadows. It is important to create the landforms with the sun’s light on the tree-covered slopes using shading,” said Jim. A large ski resort takes about a week to compose into a comprehensive sketch and a good two weeks to paint. Once the final rendering is approved, the 30x40-inch painting is sent to the photo lab for a 100meg capture, and then off for client approval. While some resorts use computer-generated depictions, Jim is a firm believer that computers cannot replicate what the human eye can. In his case, many resorts across the world agree with him and have supported his art when they could have turned to technology instead. “When I met with the crew at Schweitzer in 1993, they pulled out a computer-generated elevation64

lined perspective of their mountain, and they were very excited about what the new technology could do in mapping. My heart sank,” Jim recalled. “They were hiring me that day, but how long did I have? My career had just barely made it to the comfortable level, and I might very well be outdated within a short time. I left that meeting thinking I had maybe 10 years. They did hire me again in 2006 for a new updated rendering. Computer maps just couldn’t—and still don’t—match the presentation of a hand-painted map. The old way is the best. You need the human element to best relate the experience.”
my illustration has meant to skiers around the world. Most of them remember pinning the maps on their walls as kids,” said Jim.
Jim’s life work can now be found in a coffeetable book, which features 200 of his maps, intriguing stories and his artistic process. Jim teamed with Open Road Ski Corporation, which launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the book. The response was overwhelming; $500,000 raised, making it the No. 1 Art-Illustration Kickstarter campaign of all time. The funds allowed Jim to make the most beautiful book he could. It measures 11.5-inches tall and 24-inches wide and uses Italian art-quality printing, heavier weight matte-coated paper and a lay-flat binding. “It has been extremely rewarding to realize what

As Jim lives in semi-retirement he is able to reflect back at his accomplishments and where it all began. He believes the luck of being in the right place and the right time played a factor, as well as passion and determination. “I think I am most proud of the fact that I am an example of what is capable if you set your

mind to it.” Jim also believes his wife Dora was a major key to his success, as she helped him navigate a lot of the business side of things so he could remain focused on the art. Jim is a recent inductee into the National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and the Colorado Snow Sports Hall of Fame. As the awards and accolades continue to pile up, Jim aims to continue to stay true to who he is. “I remain a pretty humble homegrown farm boy from the small community of Loma, Colorado, that is uncomfortable in ritzy resort accommodations. I like the smaller hometown ski mountains and cozy lodges.” In retirement the painting won’t cease. He will take revisions to update existing resort paintings and perhaps one more resort or two—maybe. Jim has always wanted to paint landscapes and being so busy with maps has not found the time to do so. “I have hundreds of photos of scenes I’ve wanted to do. I have completed nine so far and plan to continue for years to come. After all, I started the ski maps at age 40, why not this at 75,” he laughed. You can see more of Jim’s work at JamesNiehues.com.

or most of us, the kitchen has become one of the most used (and viewed) spaces in the home. Gone are the days of hiding it away; now, we look to open concepts, plenty of counter space, and welcoming lighting and accessories to make our kitchens the beautiful and functional entertaining and family spaces we use them as. As a primary space in the home we use and see every day, it’s often the kitchen you look to remodel first. But if you’re on a budget and want to make sure your money goes the distance, it can be hard to decide what choices to make when refreshing your kitchen, and if or when to do it yourself. The average kitchen remodel can cost anywhere from $20,000 to upward of $75,000. The good news is, there are ways to save money—as long as you don’t cut corners where it matters. How can you save on cost? When it comes to a kitchen remodel, the highest costs are typically the cabinets, countertops and appliances. It’s also important to know what kind of structural or electrical changes you have to make, as these will drive cost and time up. “Every remodel we do varies depending on style, products, and whether we have to move load-bearing walls, plumbing,

HVAC or electrical,” explains Derek Adams of Creekside Construction in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. When it comes to saving money, cabinets are a prime place to look. If your cabinets are in good condition, a fresh coat of paint can make all the difference and save you a boatload, says Daniel Yoder, owner of Panhandle Countertops in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. “That’s something that can really freshen it up.” If you do need to replace the cabinets, opting for manufactured versus custom cabinets, or choosing less expensive materials and design, can help save on cost. “The best way to save money is to buy a less expensive cabinet door material (ie: alder), and have it painted or stained in one of the cabinet company’s standard finishes,” adds Deann Hammer of Broadway Design in Tacoma, Washington. “Also, the cabinet door style can drive up the cost. A standard shaker-style door design is less expensive than a cabinet door with a lot of detail in the design.” When it comes to countertops, quartz is a popular and often affordable option, but laminate options have come a long way and are often half or a third the price of stone or a solid surface, advises Yoder.

When to hire someone and when to do it yourself. Doing it yourself might not save you money in the long run. “Unless you have experience or friends with lots of extra time and skills, we don't recommend going at it solo,” says Adams. “It may sound cliché, but you get what you pay for!” Particularly when it comes to installing countertops or cabinets and electric and plumbing, it’s important to hire a professional. “A professional is responsible for all of the job,” says Juan Oseguera of In-N-Out Construction in Olympia, Washington. He recommends first getting an estimate from professionals and asking questions to find out about their experience and ability. If you’re dying to get in and do some of the work yourself, you can help with the demo, or even do something as simple as paint the walls (leave the cabinets to the experts). But don’t just start ripping stuff out. Call your suppliers first to find out lead times and availability, that way you don’t get stuck without a kitchen sink for six weeks, advises Yoder.

An interior designer can help provide the necessary design materials for you and your contractor, and also help save you time and money (and end up with a great finished look) by providing material selections and designer access to pricing and offerings, adds Hammer. Now trending … Say hello to light, warm and natural. Kitchen trends are firmly in the neutral category, and while white and grey are still a popular choice, even warmer neutral colors and materials are gaining traction. “Now, more often than not, our customers are doing a combination of mountain modern or modern,” says Adams. In addition to color schemes, open concepts and easy accessibility to the surrounding spaces is central to current kitchen designs, adds Oseguera. “Think warm-colored wood cabinets, earthycolored countertops (like concrete color), and warm-colored lighting,” explains Hammer. “The new trend in kitchen designs is to make the kitchen feel more like the rest of the house, and less industrial.” Along with the
neutral-hued trend is a focus on using organic materials whenever possible for added comfort and a natural feel. Let’s talk appliances. “Appliances are a category that can make or break your budget,” warns Hammer. Read consumer reports to find good appliances that will last, and don’t just opt for the cheapest. To save money, buy an entire appliance package from one vendor (added bonus, the finishes will match), she advises, or search out the scratch and dent section at appliance companies for great appliances with minimal damage that you often can’t see once it’s installed. When it comes to choosing between an electric or gas stove and oven, take a look at your habits and what your space is set up for. Gas is cheaper to use, but if your kitchen isn’t set up for it, you’ll spend additional money for the change. Ultimately, what’s important to you and your lifestyle will determine what your remodel looks like, but there are some important things you can consider along the way to save time and money, and also a whole lot of headache.

A few simple touches and uncomplicated upgrades will help you feel refreshed in your home and confident in your ability to make a change. This season, flex both your creativity and your budget with the following tips. Create curb appeal. Pride in your home begins on the outside. Smile a little brighter from the moment you walk up to your front door with a few updates that focus on less as more. Start with the front door—a fresh, energizing coat of paint and an update to its hardware can instantly make it more inviting. Consider additional paint to use for window trim to keep the look consistent. Next, look for opportunities to update small details—like a new welcome mat, adding outdoor lighting (think outside the box with lanterns or twinkle lights), replacing old house numbers and personalizing your mailbox. Every detail counts, and there are plenty of thrifty options to choose from when replacing or uplifting these items to revamp your home’s outward perspective. Make basic repairs. Don’t overlook the small things. A small leak, a torn screen or a loose hinge is a perfect place to start when taking home updates into your own hands. A few simple fixes

Mirrors can also quickly transform the light in a room; place one directly opposite or next to a window to further harness natural light and brighten the room instantly. Customized cabinets. If you love your kitchen and its storage space but not the look of your cabinets, take matters into your own hands. For customized cabinets, start with a fresh hue of paint or new handles. Swapping out your current knobs for fun, trendy options can be a quick project—for the simplest swap, just aim to match the width of your current handles to avoid drilling new holes. For an internal uplift, HGTV recommends using removable wallpaper to bring a creative color pop to the inside of your kitchen storage space. Goodbye, popcorn ceiling. Ready to stop staring at that popcorn ceiling? The trend that was once popular has lost its luster, but it’s not a complicated fix. flooring and carpet can start to beg for an uplift. The right flooring can really tie a room together, completing the look and feel you’re seeking— and a new surface area can be a valuable investment. Laminate flooring is a great, affordable alternative to hardwood, but many budgetfriendly flooring options exist today, including luxury vinyl planks, peel-and-stick vinyl, sustainable cork flooring, and much more, each with a wide variety of colors, patterns and finishes. If new carpeting is your goal, keep costs down by considering choices like stain-resistant polyester or Berber, a thick, tufted version of olefin carpet praised for durability at a lower price point. Get cozy and personal. If you’re revamping the home with a long future in mind, settle in a little more with personal touches that make it truly yours. These can be the most affordable, yet most rewarding, parts of home improvement. Find your inspiration, set your vision and make it happen with creatively displayed photos, art, unique wallpaper and pieces of furniture that reflect your personality and lifestyle. Printed maps, vision boards and chalkboards can allow you to interact with your space, while cozy comforts like candles, diffusers, large pillows and throw blankets can quickly make it feel more like home. Ready to feel renewed in your space this spring? The refreshing combination of familiar and new, along with the satisfaction of successfully taking home projects into your own hands, could be just what you need. Whether you have homebuyers in mind or you’re simply ready to revitalize your living space, move forward with confidence that you can achieve the updated home you desire while staying within your budget.
Find your inspiration, set your vision and make it happen.

hello spring
bye bye winter,
TOP WAYS TO UP DATE YO UR O UTDOOR LIVING SPACE FOR T H E WAR MER S E ASON by JILLIAN CHANDLER
Spring is slowly, but surely, making its way back. Soon we will be outdoors enjoying the warm air and sunshine, rather than being bundled up inside by the fire. To make sure we’re ready to welcome spring with open arms, it’s time to start planning and preparing our outdoor space for our spring and summer enjoyment. Below you will find some helpful tips to bring the joys and comfort of home outdoors.
New Decking or Patio After another wet, cold winter, your deck may be in need of repair and reinforcement, and your patio may be experiencing fading and cracking. Now is the ideal time to start planning for the work to be done so it’s ready to be tackled once the weather is ready to cooperate. If it is a small repair, you may be able to handle it yourself or with the help of your handy family member or friend; but if it is a bigger job, it’s best to reach out to the professionals.
Patio Furniture During the warmer months, our living space naturally moves from inside our homes to outside. Just as you want a warm, welcoming living room with plenty of room for visitors, you want to extend that feeling outward onto your patio or deck. As you and your friends and family will gather to spend much of your time here, you will want to make sure your patio furniture is up to the challenge—in both durability and style. If it’s been a while since you last updated your outdoor furniture, and it’s needing a much-need makeover—or replacement—make this the year. It’s an investment in your home and lifestyle, where time will be spent and memories made.

Gazebo or Canopy If your backyard is lacking shade, a canopy, with several sizes and styles to choose from to complement your space, can be a welcome addition. On the patio, by the pool, in a corner of the yard … a canopy is a cost-efficient way to add some shade, along with style and privacy. But if you are looking for a more permanent and sturdy solution that you prefer to stay in one place, a wooden gazebo may be the answer you’re looking for. From DIY to premade to custom built, the sky’s the limit to create the look you’ve imagined. And a canopy or gazebo will add extra protection during those spring showers.
Trellis If you are looking for a cost-effective way to add a little privacy while adding some greenery and a touch of style, a trellis can do just the trick. Plant some clematis, wisteria, honeysuckle and/or any type of vine to your liking, which will grow up and across the lattice. This will not only add to its privacy but a touch of sophistication, beauty and fragrance as well. This is a simple—and affordable—solution to add some space between your and your neighbors, especially if you have a smaller backyard area. The best part is this is a 100 percent do-it-yourself project.
Potted Plants Updating your garden space—if you have the space—with a new assortment of flowers, shrubs and/or ornamental trees is a great way to freshen up your backyard. But don’t forget those potted plants, which are a perfect way to spruce up your deck or patio with the addition of added color and texture. You can opt for uniform pots or a variety of shapes, colors and patterns that complement each other. Each pot can be unique in your flower selection or similar to each other. It’s up to you to turn boring into extraordinary.
Lighting It is important that your space is well lit once the sun goes down. This not only helps to eliminate unnecessary trips and falls, but entices you and your company to spend more time enjoying the outdoors together. Light from a fire in a firepit or outdoor fireplace, to tiki torches, stringed overhead lights, path and built-in deck lighting all add ambiance along with functionality, allowing you to take advantage of the outdoor space you’ve created more hours of the day—or should we say night!

We manufacture and import Teak furniture, by the container load, directly from Indonesia. Our Teak is of the highest quality; manufactured in a modern facility where employees are treated like family, because many of them are, and environmental stewardship and sustainability of the wood is fundamental. Our “outdoor” furniture represents some of the most popular designs, while much of our “indoor” selection is “one-of-a-kind” pieces often made from reclaimed/recycled Teak.

THE NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL Washington, D.C.’s signature spring celebration By Marguerite Cleveland
A
s winter fades and trees begin to sprout blossoms and leaves, the nation’s capital springs back to life. People emerge from winter hibernation and venture out to enjoy Washington, D.C.’s many public green spaces and monuments. Each year the signature event is the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
Where to Stay The Ritz Carlton Pentagon City is the epitome of luxury, where you can often snag some great rates for a stay. It is so easy to get to from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The hotel has indoor access to the Metro and is only two stops away from all the monuments and museums. You are walking distance to great shopping at the Fashion Centre or Pentagon Row. Arlington Cemetery and the Pentagon are also nearby. The hotel is offering a Spring in D.C. package with a perfect way to enjoy the spring season. It includes accommodations, a $65 breakfast credit, Afternoon Tea for Two and Metrorail passes for two. Many hotels in the area are offering Spring Packages, so when booking reservations make sure to ask.

THE NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL IS AN ODE TO SPRING. PLAN YOUR VISIT TO COINCIDE WITH THE PEAK BLOOM DATE.
Where to Eat The National Mall is a food-truck oasis with a vast cultural diversity of food. There are so many it can be overwhelming, but it is an experience you shouldn’t miss. Where else can you dine on street food while enjoying the views of the Washington Monument and other treasures on the National Mall. Food choices abound with everything from Philly cheese steaks and burgers to authentic gyros, shawarma and other ethnic foods. Another not to miss is the legendary afternoon tea at the Ritz Carlton Pentagon City. This is a good option for lunch as well. Homemade scones, petit sandwiches and a variety of pastries are served up with your choice of teas or a champagne cocktail. Truly memorable and worth the splurge. Another popular activity in D.C. is happy hour at a rooftop bar— especially when the weather turns nice. Zoning limits the heights of buildings in the city limits, so there are some expansive views with no skyscrapers. Many of the hotels in the area have an outdoor experience. Google “Best Rooftop Bars” in Washington, D.C., and you will see list after list. Here are two that are repeated on multiple “best of ” lists. Top of the Yard Rooftop Bar is located at the Hampton Inn and Suites Washington, D.C. Navy Yard. It is famed for its view of the Nationals Park, and you can see the baseball games while enjoying a cocktail from this outdoor venue. Throw in a ballpark-themed menu for the win. The
Watergate Hotel boasts the Top of the Gate with a 360-degree view of the D.C. skyline, Washington Monument, the Potomac River and the Kennedy Center. Enjoy small bites while sipping a craft cocktail. Rooftop Yoga is offered during the season. Restaurants in D.C. are operating at a 25 percent capacity for indoor dining. Outdoor dining, carryout and delivery are available at many local restaurants. The situation is changing, so verify with the restaurant— and be sure to make a reservation. What to Do The National Cherry Blossom Festival is an ode to spring. Plan your visit to coincide with the peak bloom date. According to the National Park Service, this is the day when 70 percent of the blossoms on the Yoshino cherry trees, which surround the Tidal Basin, are open. Throughout the city, a variety of events are planned. Due to the nature of COVID-19, some will be virtual, but there will be opportunities to see the blossoms live. You will need to check with the festival organizers for more details. Two fun things to do during the festival is to go art hunting. Local and national artists have created 25 giant cherry blossom sculptures that have interactive icons you can engage with to win prizes. Beginning March 20, search around the D.C. area. A new event is the Petal Porches. Download a virtual map (see The Specifics) and plan a walk or drive around a D.C. neighborhood to see porches decorated with a cherry blossom theme. WHAT TO DO The National Cherry Blossom Festival - NationalCherryBlossomFestival.org The International Spy Museum - SpyMuseum.org Hillwood Museum and Gardens - HillwoodMuseum.org Mount Vernon - MountVernon.org
The International Spy Museum is open. You will need a timed ticket, so make sure to purchase in advance so you aren’t disappointed. This museum is impressive, with lots of interactive experiences. You register as an agent during your initial briefing then complete challenges throughout your tour. Once you are finished with your tour you will enter the Spy Shop, one of the best museum gift shops in the country. A fantastic selection, they even have National Cherry Blossom Festival souvenirs. With the weather so nice in the spring, venture to the Hillwood Museum and Gardens. This lovely estate was purchased by Marjorie Merriweather Post with the intent to establish a museum after her death. The gardens are set on 25 acres and have a variety of styles including a Japanese Garden and a Russian Dacha on the grounds, which is now used for special exhibitions. The highlight of the museum collection is two Faberge Imperial Easter Eggs, the Twelve Monograms Easter Egg and the Catherine the Great Easter Egg. Post’s collection of Faberge is one of the finest in the world. This is such a lovely property it is easy to spend a day. There is also a restaurant on-site and a well thoughtout gift shop with many luxury items. Another museum house worth visiting when the weather is nice is that of George Washington. Mount Vernon was his love, and on a nice spring day you can see why. The estate is over 40 acres on the Potomac River, and there is so much to see and do; you will want to plan your visit. The ticket process can be confusing, as you must purchase an estate pass and then add-on tours of the home and other specialty tours, which vary by day. For first-time visitors, tour the mansion (timed tours purchased in advance online) and then use the website to decide on an itinerary. So many options from a first-time visitor or family itinerary to a military or African American history. For foodies, follow the Food and Spirits Itinerary. An interesting fact: Did you know George Washington made whiskey? In 1779, the year he died, 86

his whiskey distillery was one of the largest in America and produced over 11,000 gallons. When planning your visit to D.C., visit Washington.org, the official tourism site for the area, for the most up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 requirements and what is open. The situation is constantly changing, so check back frequently. There is a wealth of information on the area, and the site has some great ideas for your trip. Make reservations or purchase tickets ahead of time. Due to space capacities, many attractions offer timed entry, and if you wait until the day you want to visit, you may be disappointed, so be sure to plan ahead.

TOP TEN THINGS TO DO
94
|
Explore by Water
Have a Ball
Whether by sail, powerboat, kayak, SUP or electric boat, much of the city’s charm and natural wonders are best seen from the water.
Entertainment options abound, from Galaxy’s IMAX theaters or arcade games, duckpin bowling and a laser tag venue at Ocean5 to creative art classes with AR Workshop.
Support Local
Make Friends
Gig Harbor’s independent boutiques, artists and specialty shops dot the harbor—visits to the Westside and Uptown business districts are a fun excursion as well.
Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.
Tip a Glass
Take a Look Back
Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.
Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.
Share a Plate
Tee Up
Inventive eateries vary from casual grab-and-go spots to fine dining and top-rated seafood shacks.
Hit the greens at several courses, including Madrona Links, the Canterwood Golf & Country Club or the Gig Harbor Golf Club.
Walk on the Wild Side
Capture the Moment
Grab a set of wheels and glide on the Cushman Trail, which winds through the harbor and connects to the Narrows Bridge. Nearby Sehmel Homestead Park offers hiking trails, play areas and gardens to explore.
In one of America’s most picturesque towns, photography options abound—choose from an array of backdrops: a lighthouse framed by Mount Rainier and the Puget Sound, sailboats dotting the harbor, or a beach set against the Narrows Bridge.

CARROT CAKE WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING Recipe Courtesy of Tina VanDenHeuvel You can follow Tina @madebetterforyou on Instagram FOR THE CAKE INGREDIENTS: 3/4 cup coconut flour, sifted 3/4 cup almond flour, sifted 4 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 9 large eggs 1/2 cup white Erythritol Sweetener (I used Lakanto) 1/2 cup golden Erythritol Sweetener (I used Lakanto) 1/2 cup sour cream 2 tsp. vanilla extract 4 cups carrot, grated and lightly packed 3/4 cup pecans, chopped 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes (27 g.) + 1/4 cup toasted for garnish (optional)
METHOD: • Preheat your oven to 350˚F and line two 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper, spraying the exposed sides with cooking spray. Set aside. • In a medium bowl, stir together the coconut flour, almond flour, cinnamon, baking soda and powder, salt and nutmeg. • In a separate, large bowl, using an electric hand mixer, beat the eggs, sweeteners, sour cream and vanilla until well combined. Stir in the flour mixture and stir until combined. • Gently fold in the carrots, pecans and coconut flakes until well combined. Let the batter stand for 10 minutes so the coconut flour can begin to absorb the moisture. Your batter will be thick; this is normal. • Divide the batter evenly between the two pans, spreading out smoothly. Bake until the sides are golden brown, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 35 to 40 minutes. Let cool completely before frosting.
FOR THE FROSTINIG INGREDIENTS: 12 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature (1.5 bricks) 3/4 cup sour cream 3 tsp. vanilla extract 1 cup powdered Erythritol Sweetener (I used swerve)
METHOD: • In a large bowl, using an electric hand mixer, beat together the cream cheese, sour cream and sweetener on high speed until fluffy. Add in the vanilla and beat until combined and smooth.

• Place one layer of the cake bottom side up on a cake stand. Spread 3/4 cup of the frosting all over it evenly. Then, place the other cake bottom side up gently on top. • Spread a thin layer of frosting all over the cake to make the crumb coat. It doesn't have to be pretty, it's just to seal in the crumbs. Chill for at least an hour, up to overnight. Put the remaining frosting in the fridge as well to firm up. • Once chilled, frost the entire cake with an offset spatula. Garnish with extra coconut, if desired.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY WAYS TO CELEBRATE WHILE SUPPORTING LOCAL IN GIG HARBOR By Jillian Chandler
C
elebrations continue to take many forms as we try to maintain proper social distancing and follow all of the current—and ever-changing—health and safety guidelines. But don’t let that rain on your parade. It’s time to don your best green attire (and of course, throw on those hats, beads, shamrocks and anything else to show your St. Patty’s Day spirit) and create your own celebration, whether it’s solo or with friends, and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Beer and whiskey pair well with this annual Irish holiday, so why not plan your own pub crawl to enjoy some great brews while patronizing your local drinking establishments! If you’re looking to have a nice evening in, you can always order to pick up and take your choice of brews home with you. And hey, St. Patrick’s Day may fall on a Wednesday this year, but

that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate after a day at the office or on Zoom. A stop at 7 Seas Brewing (3006 Judson Street #110) is a great place to kick off an afternoon or evening of festivities. Swing by Wet Coast Brewing Company (6820 Kimball Drive, Suite C), Gig Harbor Brewing Co. (3155 Harborview Drive) and Dunagan Brewing (3222 56th Street NW), and you can enjoy brews from Harmon Brewing Co. at The Hub Gig Harbor (1208 26th Avenue NW). Don’t forget to top off your night with some good old-fashioned whiskey from Heritage Distilling Co. (3118 Harborview Drive). Celebrate the holiday, safely, while showing love to local businesses. Be sure to call ahead for current hours. As many of these establishments are serving at 25 percent capacity, make a reservation if you can.
Join the ride. Make a difference.
