“Jeff, Abel, Tracie and the team are fantastic. I called Jeff for the first time on Thursday night. He was in the airport about to board a flight heading out of town for the weekend. By Friday night he had submitted our mortgage application to Freddie Mac. By Monday morning he had it approved by Freddie Mac. By the following Monday he had the mortgage approved by the bank and ready to fund. I think this must be a world record. We had the mortgage clear to close within less than two weeks of making first contact - and the mortgage was not easy as I am self-employed and it required all Jeff’s years of experience to make it happen. Thanks to Jeff and the team, we were able to move into our dream home!” - David Smith

ur lives are made up of many important and valuable components—from our family and friends, our employers and co-workers, to our community as a whole. These people are pillars in our lives, helping us to sustain a strong foundation in which we build our lives upon. Just as a contractor lays out plans before beginning construction on a new home, we, ourselves, are the ones who will first lay down the foundation for which our lives are built. This requires strategic planning, the right knowledge and tools, patience and dedication. There will, of course, be those situations (some within our control, others which are not) that throw us from our path, and we sometimes find ourselves having to pursue a different route—though with the same final destination in mind. As with all things in life, we must start from the ground up. If our foundation is weak, we will be unable to support all that relies on that foundation. If we find ourselves struggling and questioning ourselves, weakening our stability, those who lean and rely on us won’t have the support they need,

A Happy Mother’s Day to all of those strong women who are the foundation of their families, creating homes filled with love, happiness and stability. And this Memorial Day, may we remember and honor all of those men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country and its people.
THEY SAY, “HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS.” And there’s no better place to call home and set roots than Gig Harbor. Our maritime city is truly unmatched, and to have the opportunity to own a home in the harbor certainly makes one grateful. If the past year has taught us anything, it is how to adapt to new, ever-changing situations. If we reflect on ourselves and our lives, and how much they have changed in the past year, I am sure that everyone of us can agree that we found a strength and perseverance we didn’t know we had. Our foundation has become stronger, we have become closer—even if from a distance—to those in our lives. Though what the future has in store for each one of us is uncertain, we can—and will—take strength from our core to create a future that will withstand all hardship, standing tall, proud and strong.

Punch it Up!
THE ART OF DESIGN IS NOT A LINEAR PATH By Deann Hammer, Broadway Design
W
ith the surge of spec builder housing developments arising in the harbor, it is important to make your mark and captivate design character in your home.
No two homes are meant to look alike, and the people who live in them should attempt to let their personality shine through. One of the best ways to add personality and warmth to a home is to wallpaper. I know—it can be scary. But the industry has changed, and wallpaper options are now limitless. Gone are the printed floral Grandma papers of yesterday, and here to stay are bold geometrics and natural textures. Peel-and-stick papers give homeowners the option of a do-it-yourself quick transformation, or you can hire a pro to install a more permanent version. Often homes have too much drywall, and it’s a pleasant relief to cover it up and add texture and pattern to a room. If you have box-beamed ceilings, papering the ceiling with a textured paper can also have a dramatic effect.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
Patterned carpets are also a fun way to jazz up a space. I love to add patterns on a staircase runner or a living room carpet. Pattern in carpet adds life to an often passed by space and hides more dirt from foot traffic with a pattern underfoot. False beams are a new trend that makes a huge impact on the feeling of a room. They are constructed out of Styrofoam, are incredibly light and easy to install. (Just attach a 2x4 to the ceiling, and the beam attaches to that.) They look incredibly real and add definition to the “fifth wall” of a room. Most can easily be purchased online. They look terrific in living rooms, bedrooms, kitchen and dining areas. Window treatments were so overdone in the ‘80s and ‘90s, it took me quite a while to bring them back. The current trend is to lose the heavy fabric “drapery” and add a textured roller shade with a valance on all windows. Continuity is the name of the game, so create a color/texture theme—and stick with it. Roller shade valances are made from the same fabric as the shade, and they soften the window opening, creating a terrific backdrop for your furnishings. If you feel you need that extra layering of drapery, keep it light, fresh and

simple with a solid linen or sheer panel in a neutral color. Typically, each side of most windows will accommodate two panels from an average retailer. Accessories should be of the correct scale/size. Larger is often best with fewer pieces. Stick to a theme and strive for quality. Large plants (real or faux) in a simple decorative pot that is a minimum of 30- to 34-inches tall is a terrific way to add dimension to the corner of a room and add visual appeal. My favorites are fiddle leaf fig, mother-in-law tongue (a.k.a. snake grass) and any kind of yucca. Stay away from ficus, as they are messy and drip sticky droplets onto your floor. If you need help punching up the look of your home, Broadway Design can help you get to the finish line! Deann Hammer is the owner of Broadway Design, a boutique interior design firm in Gig Harbor. PING BRAIN FREE ZE
5 tips to easier decision making By Jennifer “Taz” Vazquez
T
he other day, I was having fun driving around town and noticed all the homes being built. I took a moment to think about the hundreds of decisions an owner has to make. From budget, hiring contractors, permits/ plans, plumbing, electric, to all the design details, and landscaping ... oh my! It got me thinking of the potential challenges when faced with having so many options. It can lead to feeling overwhelmed, tired, dissatisfaction, fear of making a mistake, worry if the “right” choice was made, procrastination, or even decision paralysis (a.k.a. brain freeze).

Interestingly, being able to make decisions is an essential aspect of being able to feel confident and self-sufficient in life. At the same time, having a lot of choices isn’t always a good thing. Psychologist Barry Schwartz calls this “The Paradox of Choice.” His research shows increased choice allows us to achieve better results. However, if you’re surrounded by too many choices, you also end up with increased anxiety, uncertainty and less satisfaction with your final decision. Where in your life have you felt overwhelmed or experienced brain freeze due to available choices? What can you do to bypass the negative impacts of all the options available to you? Try these five tips to simplify choices and make decision-making easier: 1. Know and trust yourself. What are your core values and what do you believe in? Asking if your choice is in alignment with who you are will help guide you. When doubt or self-criticism kicks in, remind yourself of your past successful decisions. If you are feeling overwhelmed, step away and do something you enjoy, then come back. You will likely see more clearly when coming from a place of calm or creativity. 2. Eliminate the worst options. Usually, it is easier to figure out what it is you don’t like. Eliminating options helps you refocus energy on the other remaining choices. 3. Good things come in three. Narrow it down to the top three options. This enables you to see new possibilities and/or get more

creative ideas. Rarely are life decisions either/ or ones. 4. Know when good enough … is good enough. Instead of over researching an option, ask what is the 70 to 80 percent solution. Also notice the difference between big or small decisions. The level of energy between big and small decisions will be different. Ask if the choice will impact you in a year; or what is the worst that could happen? Also consider setting a time limit, so the decision process does not become all-consuming or fill up all your free time. 5. Ask for help. Reach out to your support system or referrals you trust. List pros and cons with them and ask questions from a place of curiosity. You’ll gain more clarity and feel more energized. It is fascinating that our access to so much information often leads to a greater fear of making the wrong decision, which in turn leads us to feeling like a hamster in the wheel; easy to become overwhelmed and go round and round on what to choose—resulting in decision brain freeze. If you want to get off (or avoid) the hamster wheel and feel more confident in your decision-making, then use these tips to simplify your choices. Focus on one goodenough decision, and don’t obsess over the many decisions you could have chosen. Happy decision-making y’all!

Good Faith Agreements A R E T H E Y P O S S I B L E D U R I N G S E PA R AT I O N A N D D I V O R C E ?
“I
By Felicia Soleil, Attorney/Mediator
f we agree on something before we are divorced, do we need to put it in writing?” This is one of those cautionary questions often asked of me when couples are separating or divorcing. As you can imagine, the answer is, “It depends.”
I work as both a lawyer personally advocating for individual clients, as well as a mediator providing neutral professional assistance to couples who are transitioning out of their marriage. Some of their most common reasons for choosing mediation include not only the obvious cost savings and staying out of court, but also wanting to minimize feelings of animosity and hostility, learning how to be better co-parents, and being more efficient and productive by controlling the process themselves, rather than relying on lawyers to do so. A common theme among these clients is the importance of remaining non-adversarial while obtaining the neutral guidance and support that mediation provides. It is often these couples who, in an effort make some headway toward settlement on their own, come to me with “agreements” they have discussed. A common question is, “If we have agreed on 75 percent of the issues among ourselves, can you just help us with the remaining 25 percent?” This is also where things could easily undermine their intent to keep conflict at bay. The challenge as a mediator is to honor the parties’ intentions of reaching agreements, while at the same time informing them about other options (options that might be more beneficial than what they had initially imagined), along with educating them about the legal components of those issues in a neutral and non-threatening way. I often ask, “If you had all the information available before you reached that agreement, would you still have agreed?” A lot of times, the answer is “No.” The secondary issue then becomes whether any of those agreements are enforceable if they were reduced to a signed written document prior to seeking input by a professional. If either party seeks legal counsel after the fact, they will probably be told the agreement can be undone because it was reached without being fully informed. But
26

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
what about agreements that you and your soon-to-be-ex reach in good faith and that make sense to your particular situation? This is where I always talk about the meaning of good faith. Are you capable of making a tentative agreement in concept, without the need for it to be in writing, pending a thorough review of all the facts with the help of a mediator or legal counsel? Can the intention of wanting to be perceived as cooperative, keeping an open mind and flexible, be the defining characteristic as you move through your negotiations, rather than holding tight to the hard and fast terms of the agreement itself? However, if you have made an agreement that makes sense for all involved, whether with respect to living arrangements, financial terms or parenting, can you abide by that agreement until it can be further vetted through professional assistance without the other party worrying that upheaval will ensue in a moment of hurt or anger, resulting in that “agreement” being “off the table”? In my professional experience, there are a multitude of agreements that are made and kept while being bound only by good faith. Hence, the term “good faith agreement.” “Good faith” is an undervalued resource when it comes to working with a lawyer or mediator. And while it means keeping your word, it also means having the ability to alter those “good faith agreements” once all relevant information is considered and options are weighed. Any good faith agreement that still stands after that process is, indeed, an agreement that deserves to be memorialized in writing and signed by both parties. Felicia Soleil is a divorce mediator and family law attorney located in Gig Harbor. She helps her clients in achieving resolutions that foster both a compassionate ending to their union and a healthy new beginning so they can focus on moving on, rather than simply moving out. Felicia can be reached at 253.853.6940. All consultations are strictly confidential and currently conducted by appointment via videoconference or phone.
Building Better Solutions for Clients With almost 30 years experience serving families in Gig Harbor and Pierce County, Felicia Soleil provides more constructive alternatives to dissolving a marriage outside of a courtroom. In addition to her family law practice, she also provides mediation services, offering legal support, education and case management - from simple to complex - for separation and divorce, parenting plans, child support and prenuptial agreements.
Facing a divorce or separation? Felicia focuses on reducing and resolving conflict, helping you transition by moving on, not just moving out.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR RETIREMENT Do you know what your retirement plan looks like? Courtesy of Nancy Harris, CMFC, CDFA President, Financial Planner, New Foundation Wealth Group

ohn F. Kennedy once said, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” This is certainly true of preparing for retirement. If we continue to expect that the ways of the past will see us through to our futures, we will be left behind. Today’s companies are rewriting the retirement rules for working Americans. Traditional pension plans, which gained prominence in the 20th century, are rapidly disappearing because of the high costs involved in funding them. Some corporations have at-risk plans. To help protect employees with corporate pensions, the federal government enacted laws requiring employers to meet a 100 percent funding target for their defined-benefit plans. Companies that sponsor pension plans are also required to pay higher insurance premiums to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), which was created by Congress in 1974 to help protect American workers from the risk of pension default.
BUILDING SOLID FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS
We develop & review strategies, plans & solutions, as well as work to create a safe & caring environment where everyone can discuss their financial concerns, dreams & goals.
Because of these costly requirements, it is becoming less and less attractive for companies to provide traditional pensions to retirees. As a result, it is likely that more companies will offer defined-contribution plans like the 401(k) to attract new employees and to help employees fund their own retirements. Thus, it is important to be aware that you may have less help from your employer and will probably have to rely more on your own savings and investments to fund your retirement. The government has tried to help by raising contribution limits to most employersponsored retirement plans. You can contribute money to these plans on a pre-tax basis. Your contributions and any earnings accumulate on

a tax- deferred basis. Of course, remember that distributions from most employer-sponsored retirement plans are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken prior to reaching age 59 ½, may be subject to an additional 10 percent federal income tax penalty. A number of companies are taking steps to help workers fund retirement. Many have instituted automatic enrollment in their defined-contribution plans to encourage more employees to participate. Some are enhancing the benefits of their plans by increasing the amount they contribute to employee accounts and/or enhancing matching contributions. Many companies that still have traditional pension plans should be able to pay their promised benefits. But in light of recent trends, it would be wise to consider all possible sources of retirement income when reviewing your retirement strategy. With the changing retirement landscape, there may be no better time than now to size up your current situation. Your company-sponsored retirement plan will be just one piece of your retirement funding pie. rom upstate New York to Scotland, Thailand, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Switzerland and Washington … and a few places in between, Julie and Ariel Gustanski have always been—and continue to be—a team.
“Since a young age, it has been my mum and I,” recalls Ariel, a longtime Gig Harbor resident and chief operating officer for the Greater Gig Harbor Foundation. She is the daughter of Dr. Julie Ann Gustanski, a founder, president emeritus and CEO of the organization. The bond of a mother and daughter is uniquely its own, and Julie and Ariel are a true testament to the unwavering, and inspiring, connection between a mother and child. The two are grateful to live and work in beautiful Gig Harbor, which affords them endless opportunities to share experiences and contribute to their community. “Not only do I get to be her unrivaled, biologically pre-programmed cheerleader in life, but I get to work with her and share her achievements in supporting our community, too,” Julie says proudly. The way the pair speaks of one another reflects the love and admiration they hold for each other. “I am in awe of her strength, independence, her ‘boss female’ charisma, her huge heart, her genius mind and so much more,” Ariel says of her mother. Julie shares her sentiments toward her daughter, describing their

relationship as extradimensional. “It’s an anthology of love in its many forms. It is friendship, it is nurturing, mutual understanding, it is a house of wisdom and sharing, connection, profound affection, an undulation of complex emotions—peppered with laughter and nuanced eye rolls.” Just prior to the pandemic, Julie’s mother, Gayle, relocated to Gig Harbor, and has made a home with Julie on her 7-acre property. “I genuinely appreciate the deep connection and unwavering commitment each of us has to one another,” smiles Julie, “and I am thankful that Mum was so open to making the move—a pretty big move to make at 80.” Though neighbors and work colleagues, Ariel and Julie enjoy their time together, whether on the squash court, on a boat at sunset, kayaking or cooking together—most Sunday dinners are spent together. “Listening, celebrating her successes, sharing time, communicating openly and honestly, and assuring Ariel that no matter what I will always and forever have her back are the important rules I learned from my mother—and tenets I have practiced in building the relationship with my daughter.” Three generations of women who exemplify that beautiful bond between mother and child. A blessed Mother’s Day to all the “mums” in Gig Harbor.

think we’re going to create an epidemic of hope rather than discouragement,” says Leslie Mayne, founding director of the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation (PTSDF). Since its first event in 2011, Mayne has been working to help veterans and first responders access effective, long-term solutions to transform post-traumatic stress into posttraumatic growth. Their vision? For every veteran, first responder and their families to live a fulfilled life within reach of their dreams, and for every American to have the will to make it a reality. In 2013, Mayne was in Bluemont, Virginia, and saw a beautiful sign and arch for the Boulder Crest Retreat Program for combat veterans. The program, which has since grown into Warrior PATHH, approaches post-traumatic stress in an alternative way, through training that cultivates and facilitates post-traumatic growth in combat veterans and first responders, enabling them to transform their struggle into strength. Many combat veterans and first responders have been through exceptionally traumatic circumstances, and
they have deep-seeded trauma that becomes a daily struggle in their lives. “We know for those who serve and protect their country, most of them don’t ask for help or they don’t feel like they’re in a position to raise their hand,” explains Mayne. For many, there is a stigma around mental health and wellness that, unfortunately, is often perpetuated by communities and available health resources. “What’s so beautiful about the Warrior PATHH program, by the end of the week, that stigma has been broken,” she adds. Mayne started the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation after her son, an Army Private First Class who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, died from an overdose after struggling with posttraumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. For Kyle, the treatment was psychotropic drugs. But there’s another approach, and Warrior PATHH is forging the way. The 18-month program begins with a seven-day intensive initiation, followed by 18 months of support and training that helps veterans and first responders place their trauma in its rightful place to move forward to full and successful lives. “You really

are cleansing your mind, body and spirit of those things that have really locked you in a negative space,” says Mayne. Now, the Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation has been selected as the ninth site of 20 around the country to offer the Warrior PATHH program to veterans and first responders. Before, the foundation sent veterans to other locations to participate in the program, but now they look forward to making it a blessing to the Pacific Northwest through their partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Avalon Network. “This Warrior PATHH program is absolutely working, the data is showing that it’s working,” says Mayne. “They can learn to take these invisible wounds and truly transform them into their strengths.” Any combat veteran or first responder dealing with processing extreme trauma can apply for the program, including active servicemen and women, and there are a series of phone conversations to determine eligibility. “The only requirement is that you want to do the work, you want to get better, you want to put that trauma in its rightful place behind you,” adds Mayne. In the seven-day intensive on-site initiation, participants learn valuable tools like meditation, explore their family of origin, lay down their burdens, and participate in a variety of activities designed to release trauma and teach healing, coping and growth. During this time, they are nurtured with amazing food and opportunities for true rest. For the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation, a national mobile training team came on-site to help train and start the Warrior PATHH program in the area. The foundation is currently in the process of hiring their own team, including a program director, who will train virtually in June and July, and start to run their own Warrior PATHH program at the end of July. 34

Throughout the rest of the year, they plan to offer seven PATHH programs, with monthly program offerings starting in 2022. “This program is saving lives, and its saving marriages, and its saving families and communities,” explains Mayne. The PATHH program and other offerings from the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation are designed to help veterans make peace with the past. “If we can make peace with it, we can move forward with hope and purpose and love,” she adds. The Warrior PATHH program is free for participants, but it takes the entire community to help make it possible. “I just think it’s incumbent upon us as a community and civilians to do whatever we can to lift them up and help them in whatever way,” encourages Mayne. “Really, if they get strong ... that only strengthens our communities.” Throughout the year, Permission to Start Dreaming hosts events like Pull for a Soldier, Swing for a Soldier and Race for a Soldier that help fund the Warrior PATHH program, with help from donations, volunteers and community support. “We're still doing our events, and we hope they will be as big and bold as they can be, because that’s our source of fundraising, and it does take a lot of money to put this on,” says Mayne. For the men and women who go through Warrior PATHH, it’s life changing. The difference between a life of hope and one of despair, and each of us in the community can be a part of helping make that transformation possible. “They come out of this program reminding themselves that their best days are ahead,” notes Mayne. “In these past two weeks, I personally witnessed six women and eight men’s remarkable transformation after participating in WP. They are now ready to experience stronger and deeper relationships, new possibilities, an increased sense of gratitude in life, spiritual growth and a renewed sense of personal strength. They will go forward and continue to serve their communities and country. I am a believer.” To learn more about Warrior PATHH and the Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation, visit PTSDFoundation.org.

ore than 30 years ago—November 9, 1990, to be exact—Robert “Chris” Wise would turn his passion into what would become his lifelong career. The owner and founder of RCW Construction LLC, Chris uses his skill, knowledge and passion during each home building or remodeling project he pursues. “It’s a passion, not a job,” Chris shares. “It’s who I am, not what I do.” Growing up, Chris looked up to—and admired—his father and grandfather, who were both general contractors in the family. Seeing their enthusiasm and dedication to a job well done, Chris was drawn to the field of construction, and he started his career working for his dad at 12 years old. Chris recalls that his mother had a different career path in mind for her son, coming up with ways to dissuade him. But many years later, she would be the one to inspire her son to quit his job in construction and get his contractor’s license—as she had seen some of the work he had done and wanted him to build her new home. “I think she thought that she had a lifetime warranty on the house if I built it,” Chris laughs. Years later, Chris would build his own family home. When his father came to visit, Chris observed his father walking around the space, very quiet, examining every detail of the home. While at the dinner table that night, he told his son, “You built your family a perfect home. I can’t find a flaw inside or out, not anywhere. You are such a better contractor than I ever was!” Building beautiful homes and remodeling stunning spaces, the design and build general contractor, based in Gig Harbor, serves Pierce and Kitsap counties. “What makes my business unique is that I have been in this business for more than 30 years—all right here in Gig Harbor,” Chris says proudly. “Gig Harbor is a great place to live and have a business.” The reputable custom home builder and licensed general contractor offers comprehensive home remodeling services, and Chris and the team at RCW are well-versed in everything from custom home builds, kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels and whole house remodels, to man caves and more. As a proud member of esteemed industry organizations to include the National Association of Home Builders, the Master Builders Association of Pierce County, and the Building Industry Association of Washington, you can trust the professionals of RCW Construction to get the job done in the most organized, professional and cost-efficient way. Their expertise, experience and confidence allow them to complete remodeling projects of any size successfully. A company with attention to detail and commitment to quality and a focus on 100 percent customer satisfaction, they are committed to delivering home remodeling projects on time and within budget—you will not endure any costly surprises. When it comes to where Chris finds fulfillment in the work he does, it is the relationships that are developed with vendors and clients, and the beautiful jobs that they do. “It’s a real team effort,” he affirms. Earlier this year, RCW Construction was honored by being chosen as one of the 10 Best General Contractors in the Tacoma area by General Contractors Magazine, which celebrates the best in residential and commercial construction.

IN BORN AGAIN
OLALLA RESIDENT BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO COMMUNITY CENTERPIECE BY COLIN ANDERSON
F
ounded by Scandinavian immigrants, the community of Olalla was once a thriving locale, thanks to its prime location on the water. At the close of the 19th and early 20th century, the Olalla lagoon helped the timber, farming and shipbuilding industries shape the Puget Sound and beyond. At one time, more than a dozen businesses stood near the bay including a hotel, blacksmith, post office, shingle mill and a store. When the Narrows Bridge went up, many of the buildings began to come down in Olalla. Today, residents enjoy a quiet, rural life and cherish the few remaining historical reminders of the area’s heyday. One such place is Al’s Butcher Shop and Grocery, which has stood for more than 120 years and has carried the name Al’s since 1959. Countless visitors have made a stop here, and it’s been a community gathering place for more than a century. Despite its history and popularity,

the store closed last year and had been sitting vacant and for sale, leaving a big void within the tight-knit community. Gregg Olsen has called Olalla home for nearly 30 years. He has written more than 30 crime novels, and his name has appeared on the #1 best sellers list of The New York Times, Amazon, Washington Post, USA Today and Wall Street Journal. His home sits just up the road from Al’s, and after it closed up, the idea that it might be gone for good inspired him to take the first step into breathing new life into the store. “I was pumping gas one day, and a former employee of Al's called over to me and said, ‘Gregg, you guys should buy it.’ I went home and told my wife, ‘Hey maybe we should buy it.’ She thought
FOCUS about a half a second and said, ‘Let's do it.’ We made the offer the next day.” Despite the monumental task of updating the more than 100-yearold building, while keeping its original character, Gregg was simply not going to let the piece of living history go by the wayside. “I always have said that a community can't exist without a gathering spot—and that's Olalla Bay Market & Landing,” he said. Because of its shoreline location, there are a bevy of ordinances, rules and permits that need to be addressed. However, a recent meeting with the county gave Gregg enough confidence to undertake the project. One of the first items of business was to rebrand and rename the market. Before becoming Al’s in 1959, the store was previously
known as Charlie Nelson’s General Store, and then Greggerson’s Market. “In all those various incarnations, each owner sought to serve the Olalla community in the best way possible. We plan to do that, too. A new name signals a fresh start,” Gregg explained. Also included in the purchase of the store was the adjacent building that served as the post office. Both buildings are currently being renovated and will serve different purposes. The former post office building is being renamed The Landing, and Gregg and his family envision a public gathering space with multiple uses. “We intend to have it be the home base for our Positive Olalla Projects group, host classes, workshops and meetings. One feature we are developing will be a history wall that will tell our town's story. We are all about honoring the past while bringing people together in a new, fun GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL

way.” Gregg also intends to seek satellite post office status and offer mail boxes to the community within the 110-year-old building. The market is well on its way, despite the usual setbacks and permitting issues with a project of this magnitude. During the remodel, workers removed the hanging ceiling and were surprised to find beautiful old tresses and beams. Exposing them will give the market a completely different feel, while highlighting the original build as well. It’s a balance of old and new that Gregg is working hard to maintain. “Think of the reimagining of the store and its amazing location as taking the best of what it was and amplifying those attributes and services,” he explained. Once the kitchen is up and running, the market will specialize in pizza and sandwiches, with an emphasis on regional beers as well. Gregg won’t divulge the rest of the menu, only stating that they are working on a few surprises they’re not yet ready to reveal. You won’t find a full-scale grocery store, but there will still be a unique selection of snacks and soft drinks to go, as well as more outdoor space for customers to relax and enjoy the views. The gas pumps are also being removed to open up the parking lot for more parking and more environmentally friendly landscaping. While a grand opening date is yet to be announced, Gregg is hopeful to have the doors open sometime this summer. There are challenges on all fronts, but he and his family are committed to getting through each obstacle with their ultimate goal of preserving the central gathering point for this close-knit community. “We were a young family when we arrived and fell immediately in love with the people, the place, and the role community plays in our lives. The boat ramp park, the beach, and of course the store, all play a role in bringing us together; we simply can’t lose this place.” While change can be difficult, Gregg says he is greeted daily with support of the project from all walks of the community. Friends and neighbors are 40

pitching in, and all are excited to be nearing the finish line. “My family is simply overwhelmed with the support and is humbled by the great faith folks have in what we are doing,” said Gregg. The Olalla Bay Market website and social media channels are up and running. Gregg posts frequent updates and blogs here so anyone can follow the progress. There are a few items up for sale as well including T-shirts, stickers and coffee mugs. The Always Olalla brand pays homage to AL’s in yet another reminder of the location’s history. Always the storyteller, Gregg is also producing a documentary during the project. He’s gathering interviews from some of Olalla’s most interesting residents. “Olalla is the home of genuine characters. Our people are fascinating, caring and, very often, they march to a different drummer. That's the part of Olalla that I love as a storyteller.” With a few more steps to go, the reality of the Olalla Bay Market opening its doors is beginning to set in. For the Olsen family, the hard work will all be worth it, and they are excited to keep the store’s legacy alive, as it has truly become a community project. “You cannot imagine the outpouring of support we have received from the community. Everyone seems to be rooting for us—and helping us in big and small ways to get where we need to go.” For the latest updates, visit OlallaBayMarket.com or find them on Facebook.

ike her peers, Peninsula High School senior Saige Paulo was excited to get back in the classroom, if only for a few weeks, before her high school experience comes to an end. Remote learning was a challenge for the 17-year-old, but even so, she tried to make the best of it and find the little positives. “I like to look on the brighter side; I got to sleep in, save money on gas and do less laundry,” she laughed.

Saige is an active member of student government at Peninsula. She’s participated since her sophomore year and serves as vice president in her final semester. She’s also a competitor on the track-and-field team, specializing in the throwing events.

Not one afraid of getting her hands a little dirty, Saige’s favorite classes involved hands-on learning in a setting in which others might be more squeamish. “I have two favorite subjects:

human body systems and history. Human body systems was my favorite because we got to dissect a pig’s heart, cow eyes and sheep brain; history because I find it interesting to learn both the good and bad from the past,” she said. The uniqueness of hands-on learning might have helped guide Saige into her future profession. Upon graduation, she plans on heading across the state to Washington State University to complete her bachelor’s in nursing. “I’ve always been interested in the medical field, specifically a nurse since I was younger because I love helping people, talking to people and listening to others.” From the classroom, to making big decisions for her peers, to competing in athletics, Saige will look back at her senior year fondly while she prepares for the next chapter in her life. She will also remember the many teachers who left a lasting impact on her. “A teacher who had an impact on my life was Mrs. DaVinky, also known as Mona Lisa. She always said, ‘It’s not the smartest person who gets the job. It’s the kind, empathic and hardworking person who gets the job.’"

ig Harbor High School senior Maddy Hale is not just a student but also an employee of the school district. Maddy is one of the school’s marketing interns and has been since November of her freshman year. In her role, the 18-year-old conducts numerous video and print interviews, handles design and graphic work for social media, designs and edits print material such as the district’s newsletter, The Compass, and various other projects. “I’m also the president of GHHS STEAM Club, where we compete with other schools in events like promotional design, video game design, biotechnology, coding and more,” said Maddy. Having her hand in story writing and development, as well as visual and graphic design, is something Maddy will look to pursue as a career. She’s wanted to be a game designer since a very young age and would
like to use what she’s learned in school to develop games that have intricate playthroughs and are different each time. “I love video games that allow me to uncover a story in many different ways, and I love games that are open world. My biggest dream is to create games that help people learn about the world around them in a fantastical way,” she said. Maddy’s favorite teacher at Gig Harbor High School is Mr. Joe Marten. He is a CTE teacher and also one of the STEAM Club advisors. She shares that he is very kind and cares a lot about his students. “I took his video projects class during the first all-online semester of remote learning, and he worked hard to make sure every student had what they needed to succeed.” When choosing a college, many kids tend to stay in the Northwest, with a few entering different time zones. Maddy will be venturing out a little further, all the way to Dublin, Ireland, where she will enroll in Trinity College and pursue an economics degree. “After working in marketing for most of my high school years, I decided that I really wanted to learn what makes markets work and how they are influenced by a number of factors. I’m very interested in statistics and data, and so after getting an economics degree I’m planning on working in the field for a few years and then possibly going back to school for a data science master's degree,” she said.

THE TANGLEWOOD LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT Lighthouse restoration nearing completion BY DAVID HAGLUND
T
he current residents of Tanglewood Island are busy—as so many have been during the shutdown of the past year—with their own gardens and home improvement projects. But they have also aroused their neighbors’ interest and attention to a labor of love they commenced last fall—their renovation of the iconic Lighthouse that rises 40 feet above the tidal beach on the north end of the island. There are now four families who make their home on Tanglewood. The island has been privately owned since the end of the 19th century, when a mortician from the Tacoma area bought it as a vacation retreat. Four decades later, a Tacoma physician, partly out of concern about “juvenile delinquency,” bought the island and created his Camp Ta-Ha-Do-Wa For Boys. After another 40 years or so, around 1980, four families with ties to the Puget Sound, then living in Southern California, decided to come

back here to live—and they bought the island together. (And one of those four families still resides on Tanglewood.) The history of the Lighthouse begins with the construction of Camp TaHa-Do-Wa. Its facilities were built mid-20th century over a period of years until the island resembled a rustic resort, with cabins, maintenance buildings, a ball diamond, swimming pool and that amazing Lodge, the walls of which rested directly on the seawall. The Lighthouse was built to stand out in the water at flood tide and near water’s edge at the ebb, and was connected to the Lodge by two bridges at the first- and second-story level. The masonry of the Lighthouse is in remarkably good shape today, presumably because it was built by professional bricklayers who were available at the time because of a masons strike in Tacoma. The Lodge and Lighthouse are fixtures in many locals’ memories because,

in their youth, they attended proms, graduations or recreational events held there. Some remember the skating on the Lodge’s open second floor—open because the enormous roof trusses obviated the need for pillars. Some remember the heated salt-water swimming pool just inside the seawall, which was an early “infinity pool” when the tide was high. And others—usually older men—can’t help but smile as they recall the time they smuggled illicit contraband (often packaged in bundles of six) onto the island the day before a chaperoned high school dance. Sadly, the beautiful Lodge was built with two fatal flaws: The foundation for its exterior walls was subject to undermining by the action of the tides on the outside of the seawall upon which it rested, and the floor of the Lodge had been built on fill dirt, the elevation of which was about 18 inches too low. The extreme tides of almost every winter flooded the Lodge’s first floor, and when that water drained out, it undermined the foundation of the seawall from the inside. In spite of efforts to shore it up, the seawall on the northwest side settled, cracked and splayed open several years ago, which threatened the integrity of the two-story 46

structure resting precariously over the breach. That, combined with other “causes incident to age,” led the county to prohibit any further public use of the Lodge. The Lighthouse also had become rundown over the years, inside and out. But because the structure itself was sound, the families of Tanglewood, led by the one with the longest residence, decided last year to clean it up and, eventually, to restore it—to dry it in first and then, over a longenough period to budget for the work, to renovate the interior. The work of paint prep and drying in, replacing the top deck and cupola and the 12 broken windows, is what began in the latter half of 2020. Another of the island residents—a civil engineer by profession—had been interested in restoring the Lighthouse ever since the Lodge was condemned, but he passed away a few years ago. So, in tribute to his departed friend, one of his fellow engineers is now supervising the work (and doing much of it, rather like a player/coach). And as they can, the island residents are contributing their own means, might and main to

get the work done. The walls have been cleaned inside and out, and the exterior, painted white long ago, is now free of decades-worth of moss and lichen overgrowth, and appears almost dazzling on the sunny days now becoming more frequent in our spring prelude to summer. When temperatures turn reliably warmer, the repainting can begin and, when that is done, the new windows will be installed. The 12 replacement window frames are replicas of the arched originals which pivot at the center (as opposed to being hinged on one side or other) and are built out of "period" wood that was milled by the islanders into planks from 150-year-old cedar logs, and then sawn, planed, sanded and put together by the supervising engineer who, in addition to his day-job construction skills using steel and concrete, is also an accomplished woodworker. The motivations for this restoration, naturally, are somewhat varied, and 48

you’ll get a different answer from each person contributing to the work as to what they most enjoy about it. But whether it’s the contribution of handyman skills, the covering of the cost of materials, the time taken to discuss and refine the finish details or the pleasure of cleaning off years’ worth of green, gray and black accretions and seeing the surface shine again, all the Tanglewood residents agree that there’s a deep feeling of satisfaction in preserving an icon that is, literally, a beacon in this part of the Puget Sound—a beacon seen not only from kayaks, paddle boards and boats plying the water of Hale Passage but also from cars crossing the Fox Island bridge or driving the shoreline on Cromwell Drive, and even from planes flying to and from the nearby Tacoma Narrows airfield. And the encouraging comments posted recently on social media expressing excitement about the renovation give the Tanglewood families the warm glow of feeling that the love they are putting into this project is not unrequited.

Pairing Innovation with Communication A team you can trust for your real estate needs by JILLIAN CHANDLER
KEY2SEE TEAM WITH HAWKINS-POE REALTORS 8815 North Harborview Drive Gig Harbor, Washington 98335 253.229.1414 Key2See.com
"I have an appreciation for the Tacoma Pierce Association of Realtors and love for giving back to our association that does so much for our industry."
W
ith more than seven decades serving Pierce County, Hawkins-Poe has secured its name as a premier real estate brokerage firm from its humble beginnings in Fircrest in 1946. Today, owners Frank and Teresa Hawkins, who have owned and operated Hawkins-Poe for the past 50 years, are carrying on the family legacy. In 2002, daughter Jennifer Hawkins would join the family business, establishing her Key2See Team with Hawkins-Poe Realtors. A thirdgeneration Realtor, Jennifer says real estate is in her blood and finds purpose being able to help people in making the important decisions that will benefit them both personally and financially. “I also love talking to clients years after their purchase or sale to hear of memories made and improvements in the works,” she shares. “It’s all about the relationships for me.” At Key2See, she is joined by Realtors CJ Stewart and Whitney Johnsen. With a background in construction and a passion to help people, CJ found real estate to be a perfect fit. He enjoys being able to help his clients save money with findings during the inspection process,

or pointing out deferred maintenance while out “shopping” with clients—a quality not all brokers have, he adds. Whitney likes to refer to herself as “matchmaker” in the real estate realm; she loves nothing more than connecting with her clients and discovering their wants and needs for buying or selling and matching them with the house that will be home, or the sale that will take them onto their next adventure. “I want to be the one to show them the house that makes them light up and then put the work in to secure it for them,” she smiles. Jennifer, CJ and Whitney utilize a “listing launch” and a “buyer’s consult” with every person the team partners with. They believe that setting up expectations prior to diving into the process allows the most success for their clients. In addition, they have systems in place to assure comfort and security, which is evidenced the whole way through. “My parents have always been excellent mentors in this industry,” affirms Jennifer. “Learning, listening and engaging with them has been a consistent way to level up. The knowledge they have gained working through multiple styles of the market—and having success in each of the peaks and valleys—is priceless.”
With Key2See, you will find a team that is innovative, open minded, prompt, professional and proficient. It is their goal to use their local knowledge and experience to best market their client’s current home or to help them find their new dream home.

“Jenn is the consummate professional. She and her team worked with us to meet all of our needs in selling a home and purchasing a new one. Every step was handled with professionalism. The process couldn't have been easier!”
Jennifer says that she and her team appreciate having the opportunity to own a business right here in Gig Harbor and be a part of this unique and caring community. "I have an appreciation for the Tacoma Pierce County Association of Realtors and love for giving back to our association that does so much for our industry.” Jennifer is the current sitting TPCAR treasurer, Washington state director and past president of the Women’s Council of Realtors.
“CJ was professional and responsive, and we would recommend him in a heartbeat to anyone who is looking to buy or sell a property. We don't live in the area anymore, so when CJ went the extra mile and offered to meet the inspectors and repairmen at the house for us, that was helpful beyond measure.”
It is important to the Key2See team to give back to the local community, participating in all community events, volunteering at the local farmers market and donating a portion of every commission check to their three favorite charities: Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation, Make A Wish Foundation and Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank.

REDUCING STRESS DURING SPRINGTIME Important vitamins and supplements to assist your body in lowering your stress level By Conrad Esser, Chief Executive Officer, and Nick Wyatt, Chief Pharmacy Officer, Harbor Health
W
e have all had to deal with life stressors at some point in our life. Factors related to stress include job pressure and deadlines, personal financial situation and relationships, just to name a few. Stress can be acute or chronic and can lead to ailments like fatigue, headaches, upset stomach, sleep issues, diabetes, irritability and anger. There are daily activities that we can participate in that help reduce stress. These activities include good nutrition and diet, exercise and yoga, and obtaining adequate sleep. In addition to these activities, there are several vitamins and supplements that can also assist your body in reducing stress. Melatonin: We live in a society that prides itself on how little sleep we often get. One of the best ways to combat stress is getting adequate amounts of quality sleep. The U.S. National Sleep Foundation recommends getting at least seven to nine hours of sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates
your body’s sleep-wake cycle. The production and release of melatonin increases with darkness and decreases with lightness. One of the most common sleep hygiene mistakes many people make is not securing their screen time 30 minutes prior to going to bed. The light from the device’s screen reduces our body’s production of melatonin. This in return can make it difficult to fall asleep. Even with the practice of good sleep hygiene, melatonin supplementation may be required to obtain optimum sleep. It is best to start with a low dosage in the evening before going to bed and work your way to a higher dosage if necessary. Magnesium: Magnesium deficiency is the third most common deficiency in the U.S. Low magnesium levels, hypomagnesemia, are highly associated with increased stress levels. Studies have shown that magnesium does play a role in reducing stress by playing an important role in regulating neurotransmitters. Selecting the correct form of magnesium can be confusing, as there are many forms that exist. Choose the wrong form

adequate amounts of quality sleep. and your stress level might go up due to the common side effect of diarrhea. This common side effect can usually be reduced by using the glycinate form as well as taking your magnesium supplement with calcium. Valerian Root: Valerian root has long been used as a mild sedative for the treatment of stress. Prior to drugs like diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) and other benzodiazepines, valerian root was widely used to treat symptoms of stress-related ailments such as anxiety, depression and insomnia. Valerian root helps to regulate a neurotransmitter known as gamma-aminobutyric acid, GABA, promoting relaxation. CBD (Cannabidiol): There is much confusion about CBD. CBD is one of hundreds of phytocannabinoids found in cannabis. THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is another phytocannabinoid found in cannabis and is best known for its psychoactive properties that produces the feeling of being “high.” The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 removed lowTHC cannabis, defined as less than 0.3 percent THC, from regulation under the Controlled Substance Act. This paved the way for CBD products produced from low-THC cannabis plants to be legally sold. CBD studies found evidence that “strongly support” that CBD
can reduce your anxiety levels. CBD binds to multiple sites of action in the brain, activating multiple pathways to produce feelings of relaxation. It is important if you are taking CBD or are interested in trying CBD that you purchase a product that has undergone quality assurance testing. Another thing to consider if you are contemplating starting CBD is finding a health-care professional knowledgeable about CBD to partner with.
COMPOUNDING PHARMACY HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTER CELL CODE SUPPLEMENTS
B Complex Vitamins: These vitamins help play an important role in metabolism by transforming the food you eat into usable energy. B complex vitamins are also essential for heart and brain health, and these vitamins may improve mood and stress by lowering your homocysteine levels. Make sure your multivitamin has a good daily percentage of B vitamins in the capsule or tablet; if not, you may want to take a separate daily B complex vitamin with a higher daily percentage value. We hope that you try to reduce some of your stress and live your healthiest life. W H AT I S W E L L N E S S ? AND WHY YOU SHOULD MAKE IT PART OF YOUR SELF-CARE ROUTINE
BY JESSIE PURYEAR, OWNER, URBAN FLOAT UNIVERSITY PLACE

ellness is defined as the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal. I highlight “actively pursued goal” because I think that is the part of wellness most people forget. We eat healthy sometimes, we start a workout routine every year, which seems to fall by the wayside around the end of the month. We all have the best intentions, but life gets in the way. Jobs, kids, spouses, homes all require continuous attention, and the easiest part to take time away from is ourselves.

I want to share a secret with you: Putting yourself first makes all the other commitments you have easier. What if all it took to feel better mentally and physically was one hour a week? Float therapy involves floating effortlessly in a tank filled with over 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt. The solution is heated to the temperature of your skin, so you lose sensation of being in water. The suites are sound and light isolated, but you can always leave the lights on, or even play relaxing music while you float. Researchers have discovered that in this environment, the amygdala—the part of your brain that signals you are in a stressful situation and starts all the alarms ringing in our body to prepare the response to anxiety, stress, fight or flight—turns off! Here is what all our clients
report to us, when they are in situations that would have caused them stress or anxiety in the past—they do not get stressed or anxious. They stay calmer, their minds stay focused, they do not get the adrenaline rush and are able to work through the situation with a clear, calm head. How much would staying calm in a situation that would have resulted in stress or anxiety improve your life? Not to mention the physical benefits to your mind and body from decreased adrenaline and cortisol releases, which over time reduces your risk from heart attack and strokes. And the best part, if you use float therapy on a regular basis as part of your wellness routine, this happens without any input from you. You do not have to remember to perform a breathing exercise or remind yourself to stay calm. It happens naturally. A regular float therapy routine tapers down the stress response. We all say we put our family first. Putting your wellness first is truly putting your family first. Are you worth one hour a week? Urban Float in University Place can help you with all your float therapy needs. HSA and FSA accepted, Urban Float is open six days a week from 9:30am to 7pm. You can book your appointment now by calling 253.533.7300 or online at UrbanFloat.com/universityplace.

a loved one, with a familiar song at just the right time. At Olympic Alzheimer’s Residence, it’s our goal to unlock their potential and allow them to enjoy the best of what senior living has to offer. Our award-winning program, Expressions Memory Care program, uses innovative care techniques and life-enrichment programming to provide people with dementia and their families an environment in which the individual can live a productive and active life and be treated with dignity and respect. Living Life to the Fullest with Prestige We strive to offer our residents a wide variety of activities to both help us get to know them better and keep them active and engaged. Whether it’s through exercise, singing, dancing, gardening, painting or any of the other activities we run, keeping our memory care residents active benefits both their physical and mental well-being, promoting longevity and health.
Science has shown that when we sing or listen to music, it releases endorphins in the brain, the chemicals that help us feel uplifted and happy, and can motivate us to accomplish new goals.
It’s one of the reasons we love Prestige Sings— ultimately, it’s not about crowning a winner, but creating special moments for our residents and staff, growing connections and learning about their lives. Those bonds help us deliver industry-leading care through the Expressions program.
That includes those living with memory loss, and it’s why we offer a varied series of events, like Prestige Sings, to our residents. Even those living with memory loss can be taken back to a special moment in their life, or remember

KYBELLA! KYBELLA! KYBELLA! Everything you ever wanted to know about Kybella, the fatdissolving wonder treatment for under-chin fat By Laura Jane Brougher, R.N., Aesthetic Nurse and Owner at Gig Harbor Aesthetics
I
f you are one of the people who have stubborn under-chin fat, regardless of how lean you get, you may be the perfect candidate for a Kybella treatment. Kybella provides a treatment option for patients who are interested in addressing the fat underneath their chin but are unwilling to consider more invasive plastic surgery procedures, such as liposuction.
in the area to be treated. Each tiny dot is injected with a small amount of Kybella. There may be a sting or slight burning sensation. The injections are done in a few minutes; the whole treatment takes about 30 minutes. Your provider will have you ice the area afterward for increased comfort. You can expect swelling in the area for two to three days, and sometimes for more than a week.
What is it?
How many treatments will I need? How often?
Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable that effectively destroys fat cells in the treatment area under the chin to improve your profile. Kybella is made of deoxycholic acid, a prescription medicine. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown of fat. When precisely injected into the area of fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys the fat cells. Who is a good candidate for Kybella? Kybella may be right for you if you are bothered by or self-conscious of stubborn fat under the chin. Many people complain that this extra bit of submental chin fat makes them look older or heavier than they are. Kybella is for people who want the fat reduced but do not want to have the surgery. People who have reduced their weight and exercise but still have stubborn fat are good candidates. Kybella is definitely best for people who do not want to have plastic surgery. What can I expect? The area under your chin is mapped out, and your injector will usually put a grid marking
Most people will require a minimum of two treatments, spaced about four to eight weeks apart. Sometimes, two to four treatments are necessary to get to the desired result, which is dependent on how much fat is in the area. If you are planning for a special occasion, make sure you give yourself plenty of time for the results. As with any treatment, an individual's response and results may vary. What is the cost? The cost of Kybella is generally $1,200 to $1,800 per treatment (two vials average), depending on where you live. The best thing to do is to make an appointment with your trusted skin-care provider to discuss the best plan for treatment and an estimate of the cost. At Gig Harbor Aesthetics, we like to have a comprehensive discussion on a timeline and budget that best suits your beauty needs. For a consultation on the best plan for you, book an appointment online at GigHarborAesthetics. com or call 253.514.6766.

CHOOSING UNITY OVER
DIVISION COMPASSION CONNECT BY RACHEL KELLY
W
hen asked about the guiding principle of their work with Compassion Connect, Christine Gilge and Kawehi Marshall of Compassion Connect Puget Sound quoted their inspiration from Jesus:
“Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, love one another. This is how you will be recognized as my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:3435 (MSG). The command to “love on another” is repeated three times. Apparently, Jesus thought his followers might forget! And it’s true, sometimes they did. Sometimes they do. Compassion Connect was founded with the intention to combat that apathy through unity, so that the command to love one another is not forgotten. In fact, Christine and Kawehi had several answers. They quoted verses of unity in the church. Oneness in Christ. “God is light. In him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5). Which they take to mean that light should be a part of their regular everyday interactions, infused into their work and their conversation. They talked about many hands making light work. All their inspiration seemed to be about devotion to love. Love that they have felt from God, and love that they were interested in passing along. It is the kind of love that won’t let others feel isolated. Love that inspires connection. Simply put, the drive of Compassion Connect is to equip community members to shine a light into dark corners. To see those who may feel unseen. To connect with the unconnected. To choose “unity over division and compassion over complacency.” Their base is in Portland, Oregon, but Compassion Connect functions in Washington, Idaho and Arizona as well.

Practically, for Compassion Connect, this means bringing churches together to serve their neighbors in tangible ways. The idea being that churches, and people as a whole, are united by the commonality of their ancestry. Churches are united by a belief in Christ. The community is united behind the intrinsic value of the human being. No matter where their beginnings, no matter where those beginnings seem to be headed. While not everyone may share the same religion, most can agree that people are important. Compassion is essential. Compassion Connect ignites these common values to address two common community struggles: accessible health care and sex trafficking. Compassion Connect partners with churches, law enforcement, the FBI, and nonprofits in the area to bring a whole solution to each community. In this way Compassion Connect is a larger resource, not just one part of the whole answer. Health care and sex trafficking require resources from all different corners of the community, and Compassion Connect works to see that happen. Organically, by relationship. In this way no one part of the community is left on its own without support. The community is the ultimate benefactor of the partnerships that Compassion Connect creates. One of the ways in which Compassion Connect helps their communities serve their neighbors is through community health care. Several local churches in Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Arizona unite to offer a free Compassion Health Clinic. They address a variety of health needs such as dental, physical therapy, nutrition, optometry, wellness and prayer. They even provide a tent with games and activities for children whose parents are in their various appointments. Health-care workers, nurses, social workers, food pantries and doctors from the churches in the community come together to offer these services, free of charge.

The most recent Compassion Clinic was hosted in Tacoma, Washington. Congolese and Kenyan refugees were brought by bus from Seattle, and cheerily greeted by the wide smile of the head social worker for the clinic. She rode with the refugees up and down from Seattle, busily occupying herself with connecting to the refugee individuals and families, bringing comfort. Then she would begin her rounds with questions such as, “Do you need a translator?” or “How do you feel today?” Refugees and community members are then met by the next round of people who guide them through various paperwork, signatures and triage, where their overall health is examined. They then wait to be treated by the various clinics within the church, according to their need. Compassion Connect has several volunteer doctors, nurses and medical assistants to oversee the various clinics, as well as a medical team lead. They have special chairs and tables for physical therapy, and all the various equipment for fitting their patients with glasses. Thanks to generous donors, Compassion Connect also has a large amount of dental equipment, which can be transported from state to state according to need. An entire dentistry chair and sanitized tools is rolled up into one unit the size of a large toolbox. They have several such “toolboxes” that they unpack for one clinic. It is quite the event! At this most recent Washington Compassion Clinic, the co-founder of Compassion Connect, Milan Homola, attended along with the director of the Idaho branch, John McGee. In 2014, in Caldwell, Idaho, area churches held their first Compassion Connect community health clinic. Caldwell area churches are now expanding their resources to additional communities. The director and staff from the Idaho branch were visiting the Washington clinic to connect and learn from the providers there. As the Compassion Connect staff from South Sound in Washington welcomed the leaders and staff from the Idaho branch, their camaraderie was apparent. They wanted to share, to show and to support. Compassion Connect really does choose unity over division. The second need that Compassion Connect helps communities tackle is more difficult to address. Sex trafficking is a business that flourishes strictly because it does not often see the light of day. Its victims go unheard. The missing youth and women of our communities

disappear quietly because they are alone. They are unconnected, with few advocates. Finding them, hearing them, takes more than just a few people. Addressing trafficking requires not only the unity of the church, but the involvement of the whole community. Compassion Connect seeks to end sex trafficking by doing just that: spurring involvement. Bringing the unseen and unheard to the forefront. The anti-trafficking aspect of the Compassion Connect ministry is called Adorned In Grace. Each local Adorned in Grace ministry is run by local directors and volunteers, and addresses their communities according to their need. Anti-trafficking can be either preventive or proactive. This assures for a grass roots approach to each community; ears and eyes that directly connect to the present need. Adorned in Grace is then subdivided into two parts, the bridal boutique and the ministry center. The Adorned in Grace bridal boutique sells gently used bridal and formal wear at a discounted price. The boutique, along with church presentations and the website, offer opportunities for awareness and community involvement. All proceeds from the boutique then go to the larger ministry of prevention and restoration. From talking with Christine Gilge and Kawehi Marshall, who work within Adorned in Grace Puget Sound, the resources that prevent trafficking are often those that also offer restoration. Adorned in Grace Puget Sound works within the G.R.A.C.E. model, which is an acronym for Gospel, Resources, Activity, Community and Education/Employment. Each man, woman or child who comes into the ministry offices are assessed with a G.R.A.C.E plan, to see where their practical and spiritual needs lie. Practical needs are, of course, addressed first. Needs such as housing, food, safety and medical care are provided for through a network of larger community partners (such as community shelters). Unfortunately, these needs are extremely pressing and present. Christine receives at least one to two calls a month of rape, a missing child or suicide that have to do with sexual predators and violence. Some are more vulnerable than others, but safety is a concern for every child. Every woman. Every family. This is why prevention is so key to the administration of Adorned in Grace Puget Sound. They do this through a variety of community efforts, including the arts! They showcase ballet and painting events that tell the stories of victims, bringing awareness for its prevention. Art is not just an effective mode for communication, but a healing balm for storytellers. They also hold classes and workshops to teach Power Over Predators, deal with societal pressures and combat isolation. A specific group, The Trophies of Grace, works with teenage boys. They even partner with a ranch to teach survivors practical life skills for future employment. Being on the ranch promotes healing, community and involvement. This brings safety and opens up avenues for conversation.

Unfortunately, even with prevention, there are many people who slip through the cracks. This is where the need for restoration comes in. As mentioned above, it’s the practical first. But afterward, once the pressing physical needs are addressed, the trauma done to the emotions and spirit of the survivor also need restoration. This part is all about “trust, connection and conversation.” This is where the tools for prevention also bring about restoration. Painting, dance, cooking classes, employment, empowerment classes, counseling and community involvement. Simply put, Adorned in Grace connects women and children with their communities, with safe professionals and compassionate care. This promotes a place of safety, allowing each person an opportunity to process, heal and move forward. As our communities deal with an unprecedented time of isolation, Compassion Connect has not once closed its doors. If anything, their call toward action has only increased. While they have been cautious (the medical community is always gloved, sanitized and masked), inaction was simply not an option. Division is simply not a part of their 66

mission. In all of their efforts, Compassion Connect has relied on the passion and the dedication of their neighbors, volunteers and community. This has been especially valuable in the midst of these difficult times. The gap in quality medical care toward the unrepresented has only widened throughout the pandemic. The Compassion Health Clinics have worked to close that gap this year, though hampered by fewer resources.
Though hardships may grow, access to hope does not diminish.
Meanwhile, isolation has agitated the already pressing problem of sex trafficking. This year, Adorned in Grace has continued to bring attention and community action toward prevention and restoration. Their classes have not stopped (though some have moved online), their phones have not been turned off, and their contact with shelters and other various community resources have not been severed. We are all very aware of this year's hardships, of the pressure that our communities have withstood. As we look forward to a future of promise, we can still look back and be grateful. Grateful that there are, and always be, organizations like Compassion Connect that never cease to shine a light into dark places. Though hardships may grow, access to hope does not diminish. Compassion Connect shows us that we too can find common ground to choose unity over division. We too can look into the eyes of others and see the human. The person. We can, and do, choose compassion over complacency. For more information and how you can get involved, please see CompassionConnect.org.

Building Trends
for 2021
A RCHITECTURE E VOLVE S A LONG SI D E C H AN G E S I N TH E MO D E R N L I FE ST Y L E by TAYLOR SHILLAM
T
rends in architecture and design naturally evolve alongside the lifestyle shifts that dictate how those unique spaces are used. As times change, the way we build must do the same. The residential and commercial builds of 2021 have common qualities rooted in sustainability, open spaces and versatility. This year’s major building influences include a renewed closeness to nature, care for the environment and lifestyle changes brought on by the pandemic. Whether you’re looking to build, buy or rent property this year, noting the newest building trends can help refine your search. As you define the needs for your own living and working spaces, keep an eye out for the following building trends in 2021: Multi-purposed spaces After an emergence of open floor plans replacing the formal dining and living rooms of the past, multi-purpose rooms are shifting the focus into bigger, more diverse uses of a single space. Today’s homes are being designed to accommodate lifestyles that are steadily becoming more fluid, adaptable and open to change. Multi-purpose spaces are here to stay, with large dens, great rooms and combined rooms becoming increasingly popular. Unique, customized
combinations will be seen, with trends toward high vaulted ceilings providing the possibility to enhance the all-encompassing nature of a great room. Layered kitchens Even with the popularity of open and versatile rooms, there remains value in leaving something to the imagination. New homes are testing layered kitchens, with an open living and dining zone separated from a hidden working zone, to encourage a cleaner culinary display. Layered kitchens can provide a larger, private storage space, while leaving major food prep and cleanup to be completed out of sight. A clean display for guests brings the focus to enjoying the dining experience. Comfortable outdoor spaces Outdoor gatherings are on the rise, with elaborate outdoor rooms and patios becoming the new at-home hot spots. Functional outdoor spaces used for intimate gatherings or solitary moments of serenity are being created with specialized flooring material, creative enclosures and carefully chosen lighting to create an oasis experience just outside the home. To get more use from them throughout the changing seasons, patio heaters have taken many forms, including increasingly stylish and versatile fire pits, heat lamps and more. Using infrared light, gas, wood-burning fires, propane, electricity and more, outdoor spaces are more comfortable and common than before. Natural influences With technology being an essential component of working and staying connected for many, more homes will reflect the desire to unplug throughout the day. Touches that promote a reconnection to nature while staying close to home are becoming more common, such as small balconies and terraces that make a breath of fresh air easily accessible. Trending “glass curtains” allow a full opening of a space at any time. Architectural technology is developing to invite more natural light from the sun, using carefully chosen layouts, materials and a building’s available space in an effort to reduce the need for artificial lighting. A focus on sustainability To respond to changes in the environment, including climate change, environmental regulations, and how and where people spend their time and resources, architecture is adapting to increase sustainability. Climate change continues to be a hot topic with many industries jumping on board to support more sustainable practices. Architecture is no exception, with the demand for carbon neutral buildings in both residential and commercial settings on the rise. Carbon neutrality related to architecture refers to the intention to reduce the carbon energy used by a building, starting with its construction and continuing through its use. Using more environmentally friendly materials encourages a variety of materials to be used within the home. Architects are incorporating sustainable innovation by adopting new building technologies and new methods of designing environmentally friendly structures. New strategies include green buildings created of a sustainable material palette, designed to use local materials and reduce costs related to energy consumption and transportation. Minimalism 2021 is seeing designers and architects go back to basics, leaving behind large framing and heavy detailing to focus back on the simpler, core elements of design. Supporting the trend toward sustainability, minimalist design takes the essentials and leaves the rest, with simplicity that uses modern, high-quality materials to promote efficient heating and insulation. Inside newer buildings and homes, expect to see more white interiors highlighted with neutral black and gray tones. Advanced stay-home amenities Newer building designs are prioritizing the ability to do more while staying home, with designated spaces to work and exercise. With restricted access to gyms and studios, the implementation of home gyms is especially on the rise. The gyms of 2021 aren’t just a tucked away corner of a spare room or garage. Many will focus on complete wellness—a space to truly prioritize health. This can look like a complete exercise studio, a home sauna, or a meditation room with carefully chosen lighting, foliage and décor to match.

he current housing market is unprecedented and fast, to put it mildly. If you’re in the market for a home in Northern Idaho or Eastern or Western Washington, you’ve probably had personal experience of how quickly the market moves, and how fast expenses can add up. If you’re wondering whether you should build or buy, you’re not alone. But there are some key questions you should ask yourself before you make the jump. Time, needs and budget in most cases are going to determine whether you should build or buy. So, before you make a decision, ask yourself, “What’s my timeline?” “What am I looking for?”and “What is my budget?” At the end of the day, it’s possible to find something that will work for you, but if you have no idea of what you really need, it’s going to be a difficult process. Should you build?

“It can be very difficult to find a pre-built home that actually checks off all of the boxes in a buyer's wish list.” As a buyer, you’re going to have to prioritize your needs and wants, and unless you’re building your own home (and sometimes often then based on cost and availability), you’re going to have to settle on some things. If you have very specific requirements, you’re looking to build an estate on a larger property, or you’ve inherited some property and want to build, then building will naturally be a good fit, explains Dennis Cunningham of ActiveWest Development and Building in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. But be prepared to wait ... and pay. “The most important question would be your timeline. New builds are averaging two years start to finish based on county backlogs and understaffing,” says Jennifer Hawkins, Managing Broker of the Key2See Team with Hawkins-Poe Realty in Gig Harbor, Washington. “The other question is budget. Due to COVID, building materials across the board are massively inflated from closed borders and shutdown plants.”
EVERYTHING
CAN BE
Building is a commitment, it takes time, money and patience, especially now with rising building costs, lack of available contractors and subcontractors, and high market demand. “We always want to make sure people simply understand the time commitment,” adds Hawkins. “It really is like taking on another job. Partnering with and interviewing several builders will help you understand if it’s a good fit.” Do your homework.

“Usually, to go out and build new, it’s going to take longer, it’s probably going to have some additional costs that you might not be aware of,” explains Cunningham. Plus, if you’re new to the market, it’s going to be especially difficult to find a contractor, subs and even an architect who’s willing to work with you or has the time. That’s where doing your homework comes in. Make sure you have reliable, good experts to work with. Check out their references, their licenses, their previous work and any reviews. In this market, you often don’t want to go with the first person available. What about buying? Well, you guessed it, this is a difficult market to purchase your dream home as well. But it’s possible to find a home—you’ll just, most likely, have to make concessions. “Most of the time the buyer has to prioritize their desires and, unfortunately, must settle or sacrifice on some of them,” says Madden. “Benefits of buying a home include the fact that it is already set up and hopefully move-in ready,” she continues. This typically means you won’t have to get permits, install utilities or drill for wells and septic. 78
|
GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
“If you want what the majority wants, we can likely find it in a resale with moderate enhancements you can make to personalize [the space],” adds Hawkins. “However, if your specific design style or layout is not common ... building may be your best bet!” The benefits to buying a new or existing home are time and cost, but you may have to sacrifice something on your wish list. With new builds, however, there is a chance to determine some custom features—as long as you get in early enough. If you purchase a new build before construction, you could have the opportunity to determine things like countertops, colors and more, explains Cunningham. A lot of builders are willing to do semi-custom, but you need to contact the developer before they even start construction to see if they have new builds available with semi-custom options. If you’re considering an existing or older home, often the best question to ask yourself is how are the bones of the house. It’s much easier to update and refresh things like paint color, cabinets and flooring than to change a layout. If you find an older home with a sturdy structure and potential at the right price, it might be worth considering making some renovations to achieve your dream home instead of building from scratch.
You’ll feel right at home.

find the right fit
FOR YOUR NEEDS AND BUDGET A FEW T H I N G S TO CON SI D E R W H E N SE LE C TIN G A C O N TRAC TOR by Colin Anderson
For those wary of dipping their toes into a sizzling hot real estate market, improving your existing home can be a nice alternative to getting into a bidding war for a new home. A new kitchen, bathroom, home office, outdoor patio or deck can breathe fresh air into your home. There are plenty of contractors out there willing to do the work. Some are excellent, others not so much. Whether it’s a project big or small, it’s important to do plenty of research before hiring someone that will be making changes to your biggest investment.
Multiple Bids While it can be tempting to just go with the first person you meet, you might end up overpaying or with someone who might not be the right fit for your project. A lot of factors go into a contractor’s bid for a job like materials, time, crew, and the quality of the finishes. While one professional might use cabinets from a big box store, another might only use locally made products. You don’t want to get stuck overpaying for similar work, but if someone comes in quite lower than other bids, that’s a red flag as well. Get several bids, analyze them carefully, and go with your gut.
Licensed, Bonded, Insured Like other professionals that need certifications, there are required licenses contractors must have in order to run their business. Cities and counties vary in the permitting process, but your contractor should be familiar with all permits needed to begin work on your project. If a permit is missed and a building inspector takes note of the project, it could have to be demolished if it’s not up to code—and you might also be stuck with a large fine. Make sure the contractor carries insurance that covers themselves and any other workers who will be on your property.

Who is Doing the Work? Whether it’s a few days, a week or a months-long project, whoever you hire will be inside your home and interacting with you and your family for an extended period of time. Will the contractor be working alone? Or do they have a steady crew of employees who will accompany them? While you might be comfortable with the contractor, will you be seeing a lot of sub-contractors in and out of your home? And are you comfortable with that? Make sure the contractor is clear about exactly who will be entering your home.
Previous Projects/ References The gold standard for any business is to have a client give a recommendation and referral to a trusted relative or friend. If you’ve had people in your life recently complete a renovation, ask them about the experience and if they would hire the contractor again. Have the contractor supply photos of jobs they’ve recently done so you can see the finished work and that it’s up to your personal standards.
Contract When it comes time to sign on the dotted line, how big of a hurry is the contractor in to get started? Is there a reason they can start right away? Also, be wary of anyone requiring a large down payment or insisting you pay cash. If they don’t offer a contract, walk away. It’s important to have everything that will be done on the job in writing, with pricing clearly laid out for all work performed. The contract should include a schedule of tasks being performed, confirmation of the business’ address, and all licenses and permits needed for the job.
Price vs. Quality For some, price is no object, but for the majority of us, you want the best quality materials, finishes and craftsmanship your budget will allow. Be upfront about your budget during the bidding process. A good contractor will be honest when it comes to wants and expectations but can also find cost-saving measures. If they give you a quote, ask for a few ways they could cut costs without cutting too many corners. If doing some of the demolition yourself allows you to upgrade from laminate to hardwood, perhaps it’s worth getting your hands dirty to save a little extra to re-invest in your project.

THE NATION’S NEWEST SCENIC BYWAY – WASHINGTON’S CASCADE LOOP The Ultimate Summer Road Trip, Part I By Marguerite Cleveland
W
ith the weather warming up, thoughts are turning to summer vacations and what to do with the COVID-19 Pandemic still holding on. A summer road trip is a great way to travel with plenty of outdoor activities and easier social distancing. Washington’s Cascade Loop is now the nation’s newest scenic byway, and it is an epic journey taking you to coastal islands, highlights of aviation history, the Cascade Mountains, gorgeous lakes and a plethora of charming small towns. This trip is a loop, so it is easy to access whether you are beginning in Idaho or Washington. So, gas up your vacation vehicle and let’s get going. Your journey begins crossing on to Fidalgo Island and the charming town of Anacortes. Cute shops and restaurants abound. It is also a gateway to the San Juan Islands. You can take a side trip by walking on a Washington state ferry to spend a day in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island.

THE STUNNING LANDSCAPE OVERLOOKING THE PUGET SOUND OFFERS SOME INCREDIBLE HIKES ON THE BLUFFS, BEACHES AND THROUGH HISTORIC FARMLAND.
Whidbey Island One of the highlights of this area is the Deception Pass bridge. It is a very scenic drive and one of the most iconic in Washington. Once you cross the bridge, take time to stop at Deception Pass State Park. Head to the parking lot by the water, where you can get a great view of the bridge for a photo opportunity. The park is on both sides of the bridge with some great hikes. Next head to the darling town of Coupeville, and make it your base for a day or two. Stay at the Fort Casey Inn in the historic quarters, which were built for Army officers before World War I. The cottages are comfortably furnished while keeping their historic charm. They are just a short walk to beaches, trails and a bird sanctuary. For a vintage experience, plan to see a movie at the Blue Fox Drive-in Theater. There is something about watching a movie under the stars. If you have been watching CNN’s "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy," this is the stop for you. The first episode focuses mainly on Neapolitan Pizza and Enzo Coccia. Surprisingly, in Coupeville you can visit Ciao, an Italian market and restaurant. Chef Mark Laska apprenticed under Enzo Coccia and is certified by the Italian Minister of Agriculture to make authentic Neapolitan Pizza. The pizza is good, but the cannoli are to die for. Laska settled in Coupeville because of its proximity to the Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve and access to heritage farms. You
may not be able to go to Italy this summer, but you can replicate the experience on Whidbey Island. Take some time to explore the Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. The stunning landscape overlooking the Puget Sound offers some incredible hikes on the bluffs, beaches and through historic farmland. Many of these heritage farms are seeing new life with young families starting farming businesses. Oak Harbor is a tiny hamlet with a one-block downtown area. The Pacific Northwest Naval Air Museum tells the story of how this small island town played an important role in World War II with the building of the Naval Air Station and the PBY-5A Catalina aircraft, which was one of the best search-and-rescue bombers of its time. Langley is a cute waterfront town. My favorite site is the Whale Bell Park overlooking the Saratoga Passage that has a giant bell. If you see a whale, you ring the bell, letting everyone in town know there has been a sighting. You can easily observe gray whales in the spring right from shore. Orcas and humpbacks are seen throughout the year. It is exciting to see that telltale spout. In town is the Langley Whale Center, where you can get more information. Stop into Saltwater Fish House and Oyster Bar for a great meal, or purchase road trip provisions from their Seabiscuit bakery and small market.

Take the ferry from Clinton to Mukilteo. Stretch your legs at the Mukilteo Lighthouse Park and check out some of the waterfront restaurants. Everett Much of the history of aerospace technology took place in Everett, the home of Boeing, a pioneer in aviation and the birthplace of the 747. The Boeing Future of Flight will take you on a tour of the factory—the largest building in the world by volume. It is fascinating seeing these behemoth planes come to life. Not far away is the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum, where you can see a vintage aircraft from the earliest days of aviation, as well as a great collection of tanks. Snohomish This darling historic town is known as the “Antique Capital of the Northwest.” There are more than 175 antique dealers all within a six-block area. Downtown is also bustling with visitors checking out the boutiques and great local restaurants. There are also six wine tasting rooms all within walking distance of each other. Take some time to walk along the river and come back up into the residential area filled with vintage Victorian and the PNW staple—the Craftsman-style homes. Make sure to have brunch at the First and Union Kitchen, which also has a great bakery onsite. The food is Pacific Northwest style, and you will usually find wild edible mushrooms foraged from local forests. Grab some bakery treats for snacks on your road trip. They have a lovely courtyard you can eat in if you are lucky enough to snag a seat. Arrive early, as it gets terribly busy on weekends. One of the nice things about a road trip is you can pack more convenience items in your car. Some road trip essentials include a cooler and picnic basket with drinks and snacks. Pack lunches for the more isolated legs 86

of the trip. To reduce plastic waste, bring a refillable water bottle for each person. Portable chairs are nice to have, especially for stargazing. A coated tablecloth is essential for covering picnic tables, and you can wipe off any messes. Don’t forget trash bags, as many places require you to pack your trash out. Plan for the extreme weather changes along the Cascade Loop. The mountain regions and the coastline can be chilly, even in the summer while Eastern Washington receives extreme temperature highs. For more information on the Cascade Loop, visit CascadeLoop.com. You can order a guide to the Cascade Loop, and the website has maps and ideas of where to stay, what to do and where to eat. The individual towns and destinations also have their own sites with more detailed information listed on the aforementioned website.

In Honor of our Heroes
T
he Kenneth Leo Marvin Veterans Memorial Park is located at 3580 50th Street Court in Gig Harbor. This 5.57-acre neighborhood park was named in honor of Kenneth Leo Marvin, a local resident who joined the Marine Corps in 1939 and fought in World War II. The park provides a variety of active recreation facilities and open spaces, including baseball/ soccer fields with bleachers, halfcourt basketball, play structure, wetland trails, covered picnic area with tables, and more. You will also find the World War II Veterans Memorial Monument, which honors community members who lost their lives in World War II in service to our country. The monument was relocated to the site from Harbor Ridge Middle School during park construction. As you watch your children play freely, happily enjoying this beautiful space, it's a gentle reminder of all who have fought for the many freedoms we enjoy and many times take for granted.

Events and live music are a cornerstone of the harbor’s year-round calendar. From live music in the park to family movies, fall fun runs and cultural fundraisers, there’s always a gathering to suit any interest.

Brewery, winery, distillery—take your pick. Many favorites were born here in the harbor, and tastings are a great way to preview local libations. Drop in for a cocktail at Heritage Distillery, or try a local brew from favorites 7 Seas Brewing or Wet Coast.
Gig Harbor has a rich maritime history, showcased through gems like the Harbor History Museum or guided tours on the harbor’s Prohibition days.

PAN-SEARED HALIBUT
WITH WHITE WINE MEDITERRANEAN SAUCE OVER HERBED CAULI RICE Recipe Courtesy of Tina VanDenHeuvel, NTP You can follow Tina @madebetterforyou on Instagram INGREDIENTS: For the White Wine Mediterranean Sauce: 3 tbs. avocado oil 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 3 large cloves garlic, finely minced 3 cups cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 cup kalamata olives, pitted and sliced in half 1/2 cup fresh basil, finely chopped 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp. fresh lemon zest 1/2 tsp. Himalayan salt 1/4 tsp. fresh ground black pepper For the Halibut: 1 tbsp. avocado oil 2 tbsp. butter 1 1/2 lbs. fresh halibut, cut into 4 fillets salt and pepper to taste For the Cauli Rice: 2 tbsp. olive oil 4 cups frozen cauliflower rice, thawed 2 tbsp. Italian seasoning 1/2 tsp. Himalayan salt
METHOD: For the Cauli Rice: • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add olive oil. Add cauliflower rice and Italian seasoning and salt. Stir until cauliflower rice is cooked through, about 7 minutes. Remove pan from heat and set aside. For the White Wine Mediterranean Sauce: • Heat oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add crushed red pepper flakes and garlic, and sauté for 1 minute, or until garlic is fragrant. Add the cherry tomatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until they're soft and blistering, but still hold their shape, 9 to 12 minutes. • Add in the white wine, stir, and allow the mixture to come to a gentle simmer. Reduce heat to low. • Stir in the kalamata olives, basil, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt and pepper, and cook for 4 minutes. Remove pan from heat and set aside. For the Halibut: • Heat oil and butter in a medium sauté pan over medium heat. Pat the halibut dry with paper towels. Then season both sides of the halibut with salt and pepper. • Place halibut in the oil and butter and cook until golden brown, about 4 minutes. Carefully flip the halibut over and continue cooking for another 4 to 5 minutes, or until it's cooked through. To Serve: • Place 1 cup cauliflower rice in the center of the serving plate, place a slice of halibut on top of the cauliflower and pour Mediterranean sauce over the halibut. Repeat for additional servings. (This recipe serves 4.)

GIG HARBOR BOATSHOP’S
10TH ANNUAL AUCTION WEEKLONG ONLINE FUNDRAISER KICKS OFF MAY 27! By Monica Veles
S
upport Gig Harbor’s working waterfront traditions and the historic Eddon Boatyard from the comfort of your own home!
Gig Harbor BoatShop invites the public to experience the BoatShop’s 10th Annual Auction—Online Edition. This free, weeklong event will take place May 27 through June 4. Proceeds from this critically important fundraiser help continue the BoatShop’s mission to perpetuate working waterfront skills, uses and traditions at the historic Eddon Boatyard and aboard classic vessels of Puget Sound through delivering programs that focus on boat restoration, repair and boat use. In previous years, the BoatShop’s highly attended annual auction took place at the Eddon Boatyard. To adapt to COVID-19, the event has moved to a virtual auction for the second year in a row. While the in-person auction was a one-day event, the online auction gives participants a week to bid to win on items and support the BoatShop from their computer, smartphone or tablet.

GIG HARBOR LIVING LOCAL
From unique artwork, apparel and nautical décor, there is a variety of appealing items to bid on. Perhaps the most exciting item is the lapstrake pram. The boat was constructed by a team of BoatShop volunteers led by the BoatShop’s boatwright and small craft boat builder Tom Regan. It is an Alan Buchanan design known as a Lilliput. At 6' 6" with a beam of 3' 7", the Lilliput is extremely lightweight. The boat’s planking is Sitka spruce on oak frames, transoms are yellow cedar, and fastenings are copper and bronze, making it both a quality and eye-catching boat. Suitable as a small yacht's tender or perhaps as decoration for a living room, only one winning bidder will get to decide how to showcase the handsome Lilliput! Get ready to bid starting at 5pm on Thursday, May 27, and enjoy a unique auction experience! Explore the item catalog and register for the auction at CharityAuction.bid/GHB2021.
