Smart ways to Invest in Bonds
Most investors are aware of the different types of stocks: big-company, smallcompany, technology, international and so on. And it may be a good idea to own a mix of these stocks as part of your overall investment portfolio. But the importance of diversification applies to bonds, too—so, how should you go about achieving it?
To begin with, individual bonds fall into three main types: municipal, corporate and government. Within these categories, you’ll find differences in the bonds being issued. For example, government bonds include conventional, fixed-rate Treasury bonds as well as inflation-protected ones, along with bonds issued by government agencies, such as the Federal National Mortgage Association (or Fannie Mae). Corporate bonds are differentiated from each other by several factors, but one important one is the interest rate they pay, which is largely determined by the credit quality of the issuer. (The higher the rating grade—AAA, AA and so on—the lower the interest rate; higher-rated bonds pose less risk to investors and therefore pay less interest.)
Municipal bonds, too, are far from uniform. These bonds are issued by state and local governments to build or improve infrastructure, such as airports, highways, hospitals and schools. Generally, municipal bonds are exempt from federal tax and often state and local taxes too. However, because of this tax benefit, municipal bonds typically pay lower interest rates than many corporate bonds.
How can you use various types of bonds to build a diversified bond portfolio? One method is to invest in mutual funds that invest primarily in bonds. By owning a mix of corporate, government and municipal bond funds, you
can gain exposure to much of the bond world. Be aware, though, that bond funds, like bonds themselves, vary widely in some respects. To illustrate: Some investors may choose a lowrisk, low return approach by investing in a bond fund that only owns Treasury securities, while other investors might strive for higher returns—and accept greater risk—by investing in a higher-yield but riskier bond fund.
But you can also diversify your bond holdings by owning a group of individual bonds with different maturities: short-, intermediate- and long-term. This type of diversification can help protect you against the effects of interest-rate movements, which are a driving force behind the value of your bonds—that is, the amount you could sell them for if you chose to sell them before they matured. When market interest rates rise, the price of your existing, lowerpaying bonds will fall, and when rates drop, your bonds will be worth more.
But by building a “ladder” of bonds with varying maturities, you can take advantage of different interest-rate environments. When market rates are rising, you can reinvest your maturing, shorter-term bonds at the new, higher rates. And when market rates are low, you’ll still have your longer-term bonds working for you. (Generally, though not always, longer-term bonds pay higher rates than shorter-term ones.)
A bond ladder should be consistent with your investment objectives, risk tolerance and financial circumstances. But if it’s appropriate for your needs, it could be a valuable tool in diversifying your bond holdings. And while diversification—in either stocks or bonds— can’t always guarantee success or avoid losses, it remains a core principle of successful investing.
DAVID DAVINCI Q&A WITH
THRILLUSIONIST®, PARROT TRAINER AND WORLD CHAMPION MAGICIAN
by JILLIAN CHANDLERDavid (DaVinci) Womach was born in Spokane in 1983. From the age of 5, he had a fascination—you could say obsession—with magic. By the time he reached fifth grade, he was performing regularly for anyone who would watch. Today, the self-ascribed “husband, father, Thrillusionist®, parrot trainer, world champion magician, 1stPhorm athlete, skydiver, scuba diver, freediver and wingsuit pilot (and soon-to-be fixed-wing pilot) continues to captivate audiences across the globe when not enjoying life right here in Sandpoint. Earlier this year, he successfully skydived (in a wingsuit) with the fastest animal on earth—a falcon!
I’VE BEEN SO BLESSED TO GET TO TRAVEL ALL OVER THE WORLD, JUST TO MAKE SOME BIRDS APPEAR AND DISAPPEAR (OR TRAIN THEM FOR OTHER PEOPLE).
Q.You call yourself a Thrillusionist®.” How would you describe a Thrillusionist®?
A. Not a magician, not just an illusionist, but a thrill-seeking, mindbending master of prestidigitation who creates an alternate world of fascination with gravity-defying hair and leather pants (required).
Q.What inspired you on this journey of illusions and thrilling adventures? And at what age?
A. Our lives are shaped by inspiration derived from the masters that come before us. There was an annual TV Show called “World’s Greatest Magic” that first aired in 1994, which featured a magician named Greg Frewin. He performed a dove act unlike anything the world had ever seen (and was the reigning World Champion in the art of magic). I’d grown up with birds in the house and couldn’t imagine what it would take to train them to do all of those amazing things! I was so intrigued and inspired, I recorded and re-watched that show so many times. (I had set a requirement for myself to watch it twice every morning before school.) I eventually wore the VHS tape out.
That act inspired me to create my own dove act, which I took to LA to compete in 1998 at the age of 15 in the International Brotherhood of Magicians’ World Championship. I lost miserably. But I set to work creating a new act based on what I’d learned at the competition. By 17 I was performing 17 shows a week at Silverwood and honed my act so much that I ended up taking home the gold that year, becoming the youngest World Champion, in the Pacific Rim Professional Stage Championship.
I was booked the following year to come back as the headliner, so I decided to up my game by adding my parent’s macaw to the end of the act; just one problem, their parrot was mean as hell. So, I set out to train him and found out that with just a little training, parrots can become nice. That was the birth of BirdTricks. We are now the leading company for companion parrot training worldwide.
And to top it all off, I regularly fill in for Greg Frewin at his theater in Niagara Falls, Canada, whenever he needs time off. I love how it all went full circle!
Q.You have performed all over the world. Is there any one place/ show that has been a highlight for you? And why?
A. It’s nearly impossible to pick just one favorite place to perform. I’ve been so blessed to get to travel all over the world, just to make some birds appear and disappear (or train them for other people). One of the most memorable moments was dodging bomb threats while performing in Dhaka Bangladesh, or doing two shows (instead of one) in Bishkek Kyrgyzstan because the president came to one, and the first lady came to the second. The threat assessment was so high that they didn’t dare put both in the same room at once. I was just glad that my luggage arrived hours before the show, after being lost for three days.
Q.Do you currently have any new illusions or adventures in the works?
A. I do actually! My mom recently asked me the same thing. When I said “yes,” she asked what it was called … “Jaws of Death.” My poor mom. We do an annual show in Indiana to raise money for the Shriner’s Hospital. It’s usually a dozen or so sold-out shows, for around 10,000 people per show. We help them raise a ton of money, but each year we have to go back with some new material. So, this year, I’ll be hoisted to the top of the Ford Arena, suspended upside down in a straight jacket, from a burning rope, with these massive deadly jaws that will close and smash me if I don’t escape in time.
Q.When not thrilling and exciting audiences, how do you enjoy spending your time?
A. When I’m not performing or jumping out of aircraft, I’m usually spending time with my family training birds. It’s great that the whole family is involved with BirdTricks. We travel a lot to help train other people how to do anything from getting their parrot to stop biting, to safely flying it outside and having it come back. There are always unexpected challenges which, honestly, fuel me.
Q.You came to Sandpoint in 2004. What drew you here? And what are you most grateful for when it comes to the place you’ve called “home” for nearly two decades?
A. I moved to Sandpoint in 2004 when I got married to a beautiful local … Jamie Leigh Morris. … In all the places we’ve traveled over the six continents we’ve been to, my favorite view is driving across the Long Bridge, in any weather. It’s truly the most beautiful place in the world. The people are friendly, we’re rich in freedoms, and I’m only five minutes away from my in-laws (who we play cards with every Sunday, even if they know I cheat from time to time).
Q.When people hear the name David DaVinci, what would you like to be remembered for?
A. I’m not sure what people will remember me for. I do a lot of things in a lot of different fields, which I guess sums up that I just want to squeeze everything I can out of this one life we live on earth. There’s no shortage of dreams to chase or falcons to fly with. I guess the sky really isn’t the limit after all.
Save the date and get your tickets! David Davinci will be performing at the Panida Theater (Panida.org/events) on October 7. Prepare to be amazed.

THE BONNER GENERAL HEALTH FOUNDATION AND THE FIND YOUR STRENGTH FUN RUN
by DAMEN RODRIGUEZIn the scenic heartland of Bonner County, a remarkable event stands as a beacon of health and hope—the Bonner General Health Foundation's Find Your Strength Fun Run. The foundation, which was revived in 2007, is in its second year of this extravaganza, and it has quickly become an integral part of the community, igniting a spark of inspiration and camaraderie among its participants. As we explore the journey of this dynamic race and its impact on the community, we had the pleasure of conversing with Patty Hutchens, vice president of the Board, and Amelia Boyd, the passionate race director and Board member, who shed light on the event's evolution and the profound difference it makes in countless lives.
The Find Your Strength Fun Run is more than just a race; it embodies the spirit of unity and resilience that thrives in the picturesque corner of the world. Since its revival, the Bonner General Health Foundation has worked diligently to develop resources and expand services to cater to the community's unique needs. "Our goal is to promote fitness and exercise while raising awareness about the comprehensive services Bonner General Health provides,” affirmed Patty. “We secure funds for crucial equipment and services that may not be covered in the hospital's operating budget, ensuring that every individual and their loved ones receive the care they truly deserve."
The foundation's relentless pursuit of excellence has not gone unnoticed, as it has raised a staggering $1.5 million over the years. These funds have been strategically invested in various projects that positively impact the community's well-being. One such notable project was catalyzed by the monumental success of the 2023 Heart Ball. According to Patty, "Bonner General had over 1,000 unfilled orders for mammography," emphasizing the urgent need for a second 3-D mammography machine at the imaging center. The community's boundless generosity and unwavering support allowed the foundation to achieve their goal, resulting in a remarkable 40 percent increase in the number of mammograms performed.
The foundation's ambition and compassion go beyond traditional health care. One groundbreaking project that filled Patty's eyes with excitement was the decision to purchase an Exoskeleton, a cutting-edge technology poised to revolutionize rehabilitation. "We first learned about the Exoskeleton a few years ago when the Physical Therapy Department presented us with the information," she said, her voice brimming with anticipation. The profound significance of this initiative lies in its deeply personal connection to the community. Local resident Chris Owens, paralyzed in a logging accident over a decade ago, played a pivotal role in inspiring this revolutionary endeavor. Through the therapy with the Exoskeleton, Chris experienced a life-changing transformation, regaining significant strength in his core and taking steps with the assistance of wrist canes—a feat he had not accomplished in years. Unfortunately, the nearest facility offering this therapy was a four-hour drive away, presenting a substantial obstacle for those seeking the treatment.
However, obstacles are no match for the foundation's indomitable spirit. Their vision extends far beyond the borders of Bonner County, aiming to make a broader impact on the region's health care landscape. As Patty stated, "Once the therapists are trained in using the Exoskeleton, Bonner General Health will be reaching out to other care providers in Idaho and Western Montana as well as Eastern Washington." The foundation's outreach initiative seeks to spread awareness about Bonner General's pioneering Therapy Department, fostering a ripple effect that would extend the life-transforming benefits of Exoskeleton treatment to a broader population.
Amidst the myriad of projects, the Find Your Strength Fun Run shines as the crown jewel of the foundation's endeavors. More than just a fundraising event, this extraordinary initiative serves as a platform to promote health and wellness throughout the community. "Our goal is to promote fitness and exercise," Patty emphasized, sharing the excitement surrounding this year's collaboration with Sandpoint Strength and Conditioning and Flourish Nutrition. Through this partnership, participants are equipped with "Couch to 5k" training tips and nutritious recipes, empowering them to embrace a healthier lifestyle while contributing to a noble cause.
In Bonner County, where outdoor adventure and retirement living thrive, the foundation understands that instances of injury, stroke and other medical issues might cause individuals to lose their ability to walk. The Find Your Strength Fun Run serves as more than just a fundraising effort; it is a ray of hope for those seeking treatment that could potentially restore mobility and significantly enhance strength. Patty's thoughtfulness shines through as she contemplates the profound impact this event can have on individuals and the community as a whole. In their relentless pursuit of improving lives, the foundation's Board plays a crucial role as passionate ambassadors for Bonner General Health. Patty
humbly clarified, "Despite our incredible achievements, we do not hold any authority over the hospital's operations or decision-making process. However, we remain informed on various matters and wholeheartedly support the mission of Bonner General Health."
As the foundation looks ahead, greater achievements lie on the horizon. Their highly successful Hometown Health Grants program continues to play a pivotal role in providing essential equipment and resources to various hospital departments. "To date, the Bonner General Health Foundation Board has awarded $70,000 in grants," Patty shared. Demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the well-being of Bonner County's residents, they have earmarked $50,000 this year alone for further assistance to Bonner General Health’s various departments.
Transparency and community involvement are not just buzzwords for the foundation; they are integral to their ethos. Interested individuals and organizations are encouraged to connect with the Board members or attend quarterly advisory council meetings. This accessibility reflects their firm belief in the value of community collaboration and ensures that all members of the community remain informed and engaged in their work.
As the eagerly anticipated date of September 23 approaches, the community's anticipation for the Find Your Strength Fun Run runs high. This joyous 5k and superhero-themed 1k run, a testament to the spirit of togetherness, will commence and conclude at the scenic Sandpoint City Beach. Meandering through the picturesque Sand Creek trail, the race offers a captivating backdrop to the noble cause it supports. The run's exuberance and excitement will culminate in a family fun after-party on the lawn of Trinity at City Beach, inviting participants to revel in the sense of community and camaraderie that lies at the heart of the event.
The Find Your Strength Fun Run transcends the boundaries of a typical fundraising event; it symbolizes the spirit of unity that thrives in Bonner County's picturesque corner.
In a world where chaos often overshadows kindness, the Bonner General Health Foundation stands tall as a beacon of hope and healing. Guided by their unwavering dedication, they restore strength and vitality to those in need, creating a ripple effect that resonates far beyond the boundaries of any course. The Find Your Strength Fun Run becomes a celebration of life and progress, where the community can run together toward a brighter and healthier future.
With hearts united, let us all heed the call and run with the spirit of camaraderie, compassion and courage in the Find Your Strength Fun Run. For in this extraordinary event, we discover that running for a cause can lead us to a finish line far beyond the realm of any track or trail. It is a finish line that transcends boundaries, reaching into the very fabric of a community's collective spirit, to a horizon where hope thrives, health flourishes and strength prevails.
As the community rallies together, the Find Your Strength Fun Run paves the way for a brighter and healthier future for all. As participants lace up their running shoes and don their superhero-themed attire, they become champions of change, advocates for better health care and beacons of hope for those in need.
The collective heartbeat of the community echoes through the scenic expanse of Bonner County, resonating with a resolute message of unity and compassion. With every stride taken, the runners carry the dreams of those who have benefited from the foundation's tireless efforts. Each step is a testament to the unwavering dedication of Patty Hutchens, Amelia Boyd, and the entire Bonner General Health Foundation team, who work tirelessly to ensure that no one in the community is left behind when it comes to health care access. As the finish line approaches, a sense of accomplishment pervades the air, mingling with the joyous cheers of friends, family and supporters who have gathered to witness this remarkable event.

Instead of letting your hard work go to waste, why not find creative ways to utilize this overabundance? From preserving the flavors of summer to sharing with friends and neighbors, there are countless ways to make the most of your garden’s bounty. Read on to explore six exciting and practical ways to put that excess produce to good use. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, these ideas will inspire you to make the most of every juicy tomato, crisp cucumber and vibrant zucchini that graces your garden.
Preserving the Harvest: 01 02
Embrace the abundance of your garden by exploring various preservation techniques for your surplus produce. Canning, pickling, and creating delicious sauces and jams not only extend the lifespan of your homegrown treasures but also capture the essence of summer flavors to be enjoyed throughout the year. Whether you’re creating jars of vibrant salsa or preserving the tangy sweetness of fresh berries, these preservation methods lock in the freshness and allow you to savor the taste of your garden’s harvest long after the growing season has passed.
Sharing with Others:
Foster a sense of community and spread the goodness of your garden by sharing your surplus produce with friends and neighbors or local food banks. Not only does this generous act reduce food waste, but it also brings joy and nourishment to those who may not have access to fresh, homegrown fruits and vegetables. Whether you organize a neighborhood swap, donate to a community organization, or simply share a basket of goodies with a neighbor, the act of sharing your garden’s abundance strengthens connections and cultivates a spirit of giving.
Freezing for Future Delights:
Extend the enjoyment of your garden’s bounty by freezing excess fruits and vegetables. Whether you blanch them before freezing or opt for flash freezing, this preservation method retains the flavors and nutrients of your produce, allowing you to enjoy a taste of summer even in the midst of winter. From frozen berries for smoothies and pies to frozen herbs for seasoning, having a freezer stocked with your garden’s goodness ensures that you have a convenient supply of fresh ingredients ready for culinary adventures year-round.
03 04
Exploring New Culinary Frontiers:
Unleash your creativity in the kitchen by experimenting with recipes that showcase the flavors and textures of your garden produce. Take inspiration from the vibrant colors of your homegrown vegetables and fruits and dive into the world of culinary delights. Whip up refreshing salads bursting with flavor, create homemade salsas and chutneys to elevate your meals, or infuse your dishes with the aromatic herbs from your garden. The possibilities are endless, and your surplus produce provides the perfect canvas for culinary exploration and the creation of delicious masterpieces.
Juicing and Refreshing Beverages: 05 06
Quench your thirst and revitalize your body with homemade juices and refreshing beverages crafted from your garden fruits and vegetables. Extract the vibrant flavors, vitamins and nutrients by blending an assortment of your homegrown treasures. Create invigorating combinations like watermelon and mint, cucumber and lemon or a medley of berries for a burst of natural goodness. Sip on these refreshing elixirs on a hot summer day or as a healthy alternative to store-bought beverages, and relish the satisfaction of enjoying the fruits of your labor in a revitalizing form.
Sustainable
Composting:
Embrace the concept of “closing the loop” in your garden by composting your excess produce. Instead of letting valuable organic matter go to waste, transform it into nutrient-rich compost to feed your soil. Composting not only reduces your carbon footprint and minimizes food waste but also enhances the health and fertility of your garden beds. It replenishes essential nutrients, improves soil structure and supports beneficial microbial activity. By harnessing the power of composting, you create a sustainable system where your surplus produce nourishes the earth, completing the natural cycle and fostering a thriving garden ecosystem.
RESTORE YOUR MOMENTUM WITH MOMENTUM MEDICAL MASSAGE
by JILLIAN CHANDLERKelly Emerson has always been one drawn to helping people, which inspired her to earn her bachelor’s degree in social work in the late ‘90s. As a young mother at the time, she soon realized that this field was not the right fit for her and wanted to focus her time and energy on the most important aspect of her life—her family. Kelly would spend the next six years as a stay-at-home mom dedicated to raising her growing boys.
FEEL BETTER , RECOVER FASTER
“The big shift that has led me to where I am now was in 2003 when I discovered Zumba!” Kelly smiles. “From the very first video I watched with Shakira, I knew I needed to become a Zumba instructor.”
Six months later, she opened Fit On First, a boutique studio that offered Zumba classes three times a day, in Vancouver, Washington. Here she witnessed many physical and emotional transformations and knew this was what she was meant to do—help others.
Kelly and her family moved to Sandpoint in 2012. The area was overflowing with Zumba instructors, and Kelly was inspired to start on a new journey and recreate herself. “I was ready to dive deeper into assisting people with proper movement,” she recalls. “I realized that being limited to teaching Zumba was also limiting my ability to access a larger population of people—not everybody loves Zumba.”
Kelly felt inspired to provide one-on-one personal training, with customized workouts for her clients based on personal needs, goals and physical limitations.
In 2016, Kelly found herself struggling with an overuse injury in her shoulder and feared surgery. She wanted to consider her other options and turned to massage therapy. “It helped resolve the issue, inspiring me to become a massage therapist, as I could further assist my clientele and also have an entirely new career!” Kelly attended and graduated from North Idaho Massage Academy in 2017 and opened Momentum Medical Massage the following year.
The concept of Momentum was to offer a variety of services that would help clients move their bodies and recover from workouts, injuries and accidents as quickly as possible to keep them moving forward at their own optimal levels.
Today, Kelly is joined by a team of seven therapists between both personal training and massage therapy—specializing in medical massage, traditional massage therapy and craniosacral therapy, as well as a variety of healing modalities.
It is also important for Kelly that Momentum stays on the cutting edge of new therapies, techniques and technologies that benefit their clients’ health and accelerate their ability to heal. “We have added two new technologies to our services that are rapidly gaining interest amongst our clientele and our community that are unique to Momentum,” she shares.
Kelly is proud to share that Stem Cell Activation is readily available at Momentum. Commonly known as the “Holy Grail” of healing and antiaging, stem cells go dormant as we age, which results in the decline of health, recovery and healing. Kelly adds, “By the age of 60, we only have about 10 percent of our stem cells available to us to help our bodies recover from accidents, injuries and health-related disease. Momentum is using a wearable light technology that helps reduce pain, reduce systematic and local inflammation, supports wound healing, increases energy, mental clarity and supports faster recovery from exercise.”
Also at Momentum is BEMER / PEMF Therapy, offered as an add-on service to your massage or as a stand-alone service; clients can even rent one of Momentum’s BEMERs for convenient use at home! BEMER emits a low-intensity pulsed electromagnetic field into the body to stimulate and condition muscles, which in turn increases temporary blood flow at a microcirculatory level. “As we get older, those once small discomforts can become lingering issues that can impact our quality of life. BEMER will help enhance oxygen delivery, promote endurance and energy, and aid with stress reduction and relaxation,” Kelly notes.
At the end of the day, Kelly finds the most rewarding part of the work she and her team do at Momentum is knowing that they are providing clients a variety of tools to help them feel better and recover faster from whatever ailments they may be suffering from. “Every body is different and unique, and it is such a blessing that we are able to offer a variety of services and technologies that help our clients feel better and live an easier, pain-free life! It is our hope that every person we serve walks away with an experience that they will remember and share with others.”

JOIN THE PEND OREILLE ARTS COUNCIL FOR AN ENCHANTING NIGHT OF CREATIVITY, CUISINE AND CHARISMA
by DAMEN RODRIGUEZStep right up, art aficionados and patrons of poesy! Brace yourselves for a dazzling and delightful event, a soirée for the senses, as the Pend Oreille Arts Council (POAC) proudly presents its Art Party, an exquisite gala to elevate and celebrate the creative cadence in our community!
On Friday, August 25, as the clock strikes five, the Sandpoint Organic Agricultural Center will metamorphose into a celestial canvas adorned with stars, beckoning all to partake in this illustrious fundraiser. A night that glitters and glows, where stars aren't just overhead but all around— thanks to the stars of the artistic realm gracing us with their presence.
Culinary connoisseurs, prepare for a feast to titillate your taste buds, courtesy of the masterful chefs from Ivano's! The gourmet dinner shall dance upon your palate, like brushstrokes upon canvas, a symphony of flavors that shall leave you awe-struck and hungry for more! At the nohost bar, libation lovers shall find their utopia, with cocktails, wine and beer flowing like poetic verses, pouring creativity and courage into every soul present. Imbibe and inspire, for as the spirits rise, so does the artistic tide! Hold your breath, as live entertainment takes center stage, enchanting with enigmatic performances that intertwine art and artistry, like a ballet of beauty and brilliance. Mesmerizing musicians and captivating performers will orchestrate an opus of artful allure that transcends time and space.
Yet, there's more magic in store, as the auction comes alive! A trove of treasures, a cornucopia of creativity awaits the discerning bidder, each piece an opulent opus, an ode to the arts. Silent or live, these gems shall find their way into your possession, as you support the quest for excellence in art.
But who orchestrates this artful alchemy, you ask? None other than the maestro of creativity, the dexterous director, Tone Lund, whose passion for the arts is a beacon, guiding the way for POAC, nurturing talent, and sowing seeds of imagination across Sandpoint and beyond.
So, brush off your best attire, don your most expressive accouterments, and let the Art Party ignite your artistic ardor! Join us, one and all, for a night where the arts reign supreme, where creativity is crowned, and the spirit of solidarity sings! Let us come together as a constellation of creators, illuminating the cosmos with our boundless passion for the arts!

PLAY BALL!
TAKE ME OUT TO THE SANDPOINT BALL GAME
brought to you by THE BONNER COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUM
It is the season for baseball players to soak up the sun and slide in the dirt. In the early days, the Sandpoint team made quite a name for themselves.
Their legacy began in 1904 when the first Sandpoint Baseball Club was formed. The town was so invested that they put up a grandstand and added fencing
around the field—although their field was interrupted by Spokane and International’s right of way going through it. In 1906, a proper field was secured in the Peterson Addition at the corner of Michigan Street and Euclid Avenue.
The historical Sandpoint Baseball team peaked in 1907 when they became known as one of the fastest semiprofessional teams in the entire Inland Empire. Highranking teams and players from all over, such as the best from Spokane, would come to Sandpoint and test the Sandpoint players’ title but did not succeed.
