Summer in Sandpoint. It is nothing short of heaven of earth. It is a time when the streets and beaches are full with residents and tourists, all taking in the majestic beauty and soaking up the long awaited sunshine. While there are activities all summer long, it is the month of August when one is left with no shortage of events from which to choose. Whether it’s the Long Bridge Swim, one of the many Festival at Sandpoint concerts, the Arts and Crafts Fair, Celebrate Life Fun Run or a festival at Schweitzer Mountain, there is something for everyone. But how does one keep up with all the choices of events and activities? Here at Sandpoint Living we strive to bring you all the latest in activities and events as well as stories about your community. But this magazine is not the only place you will find the information. Earlier this summer we launched a new website, sandpointliving. com. The website is full of local, regional, state and national news as well as up to date weather and local sports scores. We are your community magazine and now we are your community website as well. An interactive website, it allows you to send us your instagram photos and vine videos. Yes! Medicare Covers Weight Loss and Obesity Important Things You Should Know By Christina Rust-Hefley, DPT. Resource: Medicare.com.
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
T
he answer is YES! Medicare and Medicaid do cover Weight Loss and Obesity interventions. Medicare beneficiaries agree that being overweight is a concern. In 2004, Medicare expanded its coverage for weight loss interventions including surgery and medically supervised weight loss programs. Just this year, Medicare requires all medical professionals to track their patients’ BMI or body mass index. Your future medical decisions may be influenced by this index along with other health issues. Why is weight management important for your health? According to experts, an estimated 40% of U.S. adults over 65 are overweight and another 20% are considered obese. The extra pounds substantially increase the risk for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, osteoarthritis and other illnesses. In addition, studies have consistently shown that even small reductions in weight and an increase in physical activity can improve your health and help you feel better. Why is it harder for Medicare Beneficiaries to Lose Weight? Great question, huh! Losing weight is a challenge for anyone. For some Medicare beneficiaries, however, the challenges are much more complicated. A large number of people over 65 or who are disabled deal with multiple health problems: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, osteoarthritis, back pain or all of the above. Both seniors and individuals with disabilities can share many obstacles such as physical barriers, joint pain, vision problems, balance deficits, concerns about safety and general lack of mobility.
What Does Medicare Cover? 1. An initial assessment of your eating and activity habits. 2. Counseling on diet and physical activity. 3. Education on how to improve your diet and changes that will help you lose weight and improve your health. 4. Follow-up visits to monitor your diet and weight loss progress.
Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool
Important Things to Know! 1. Medicare will cover up to three hours of individual counseling the first year and two hours each year after that. 2. If your condition or treatment needs changing, you may be able to receive more services. Your doctor must write an order for the additional services each year they are needed. 3. You must receive services from a qualified health professional who is Medicare-certified. (Not all medical providers are.) Medicare-certified Physical Therapists are qualified health professionals who can provide intervention for physical activity and exercise as part of your weight loss program. Here at Cornerstone Physical Therapy and Aquatic Center, we are Medicare-certified and provide both land and warm water based supervised exercise programs for obesity and weight loss interventions. If you meet the Medicare guidelines, go see your doctor and request a prescription for a weight loss exercise program today!

a goal.
Defeat: (n) - failure to win or to realize
Most people have experienced defeat at one point in life. We usually think of defeat in terms of a game or sporting event. But for many people in today’s world, defeat is not a trivial sporting experience. Life has become an experience of defeat. Defeat on the job. Defeat in relationships. Defeat in court. Defeat in school. Life just doesn’t seem to be handing out victories. It is people like this that Goodwill is helping each and every day. Goodwill works with men and women of all ages and backgrounds, helping them gain needed skills, connect to resources in the community, helping build their resumes and interview skills, providing budgeting training, and much more. Our mission and goal is to help people in the Inland Northwest gain independence, confidence, and pride. We partner with them, supporting them as they find victory. Here is just one of many success stories we experience every day at Goodwill. Tina came to Goodwill’s Working Solutions office in Coeur d’ Alene with a heavy heart and many obstacles to overcome. After recently losing her husband, Tina felt overwhelmed and unsure of her future. Tina had not worked outside of the home in many years. Despite all of this, she still had a positive attitude and a drive to improve her family’s situation. One of Tina’s biggest obstacles was the fact that she had not completed high school and did not have her GED, which was an obstacle to employment. She didn’t know how to take on this challenge. Her Case Manager at Goodwill directed Tina to the Adult Basic Education Program at North Idaho College. Tina enrolled in classes to prepare for her GED. In addition to her GED classes, Tina worked intensely with Goodwill’s Beyond Jobs Career Coordinator to update her computer skills. “In the last 6 months, we have noticed a considerable change in Tina’s selfconfidence, courage, and growth, both personally
Good News and professionally,” says Sarah Line, Tina’s Case Manager at Goodwill Working Solutions. “When it would’ve been easier for Tina to give up, she continued to persevere and grow before our eyes.” In mid-April, Tina came into the Working Solutions office and proudly announced that she had passed her GED exam with flying colors! She invited her Case Manager and Career Coordinator, partners in her journey to success, to her graduation ceremony. Tina was beaming with pride, as were her Case Managers. Tina’s journey does not stop here. She was recently hired by Corum Associates, where she is working full time. “It has been such a joy to celebrate Tina’s success. We are all celebrating this milestone with her,” comments Line. Goodwill’s Working Solutions staff continues to work with Tina, as they do with all participants, to assist with her transition into her new employment, and insure that her success continues.

Pend Oreille Health Care
VOTED IDAHO’S #1 NURSE PRACTITIONER FOR CLINICAL EXCELLENCE IN 2013! By Patty Hutchens
M
ichelle Anderson, owner of Pend Oreille Health Care in Sandpoint, was recently named the recipient of the 2013 Award for Excellence for the State of Idaho for her work as a Nurse Practitioner. Awarded by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), Anderson was honored at the 2013 National Conference in Las Vegas in late June. According to the AANP, the award for Nurse Practitioner Excellence recognizes one nurse practitioner from each state who demonstrates not only excellence in the clinical setting, but also who is a respected role model among other nurse practitioners as well as a leader in his or her community.
Health Care For Your Whole Family, Including: Adult Medicine Gynecology Pediatrics Minor Procedures Weight Loss Counseling Menopause Management and More!
For Anderson, she is humbled by the honor and said it feels good to receive the recognition from the organization and her fellow practitioners. In addition to her thriving practice at Pend Oreille Health Care, Michelle serves as the medical coordinator for the Scenic Half Marathon and was instrumental in reviving the Chamber of Commerce’s Health & Safety Fair in 2008. Michelle also serves as President of the Board for Community Cancer Services. She was drawn to the organization by the fact that she has close friends and family who have been affected by the disease. “It feels good to volunteer my time there,” said Michelle, who adds that she likes that she can help make a difference in others’ lives. Anderson’s commitment to her profession is evident in the steps she has taken to educate others about the role of nurse practitioners in the medical field. Nurse practitioners are fully credentialed, can write prescriptions, and order diagnostic tests. Many of Anderson’s patients remark at how they appreciate the extra time she spends with them.
Pictured are Dr. Cherese Severson, the Idaho state representative for the AANP, Nurse Practitioner Michelle Anderson, and Dr. Angela Golden, AANP President at the June convention in Las Vegas.
Michelle and her husband, Chiropractor Will Mihin, moved to Sandpoint in May 2007 from North Carolina. A graduate of Duke University, Michelle is originally from Alberta, Canada. Will discovered a Sandpoint chiropractic practice for sale and that, says Michelle, is what precipitated the move to the area. They, along with their two children Quin 5 and Kole 3, enjoy all that Sandpoint and the surrounding area has to offer. In her practice at Pend Oreille Health Care, which she opened in March 2009, Michelle focuses on family care. One of the families she treats has all four generations seeing Michelle for their medical needs. About 30 percent of her practice is in pediatric care, and Michelle also works a great deal with women’s health issues including menopause management. She treats many male patients as well. “I have a strong cardiology background because I also worked in cardiology for four years while in North Carolina,” said Michelle. Michelle is grateful for the recognition by her colleagues as well as those in the Sandpoint community. But that is not the driving force behind her commitment to her profession and community. “I do the things I do because it feels right, and I love doing it,” she said.

Selling Your Home?
Which Fixes are Worth it to Lure Buyers
O
kay, don’t panic.
If you’re one of those homeowners who’s been moaning about how hard it’s been trying to sell your house, your bargaining power -- you remember that concept, right? -- hasn’t been completely devastated just because a flood of recent foreclosures. In fact, while studies have shown your own property value could take up to another 4 percent hit if you’re within a quarter mile of a foreclosure ultimately snapped up at auction or taken back by the lender, the thing to remember is this: Most buyers today are only interested in homes that are “move-in-ready,” so if yours isn’t ... well, there’s your problem. “Buyers generally look at ‘as-is’ properties that need work, and say ‘I’ll pass,’” says Patsy O’Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby’s in Montclair, N.J. “That’s why I tell clients it’s worth making certain strategic fixes if they’re looking for quicker and more profitable sales.”

with faulty electrical wiring? Enough said. Not Worth It: Major bath renovations. “Whatever you do might not suit the buyer,” says O’Neill, “and meanwhile, you’d have spent as much as tens of thousands of dollars.” Meaning, stick to things like repairing cracked shower doors, and save your visions of a modern-day spa for your own new abode. Worth It: Ripping up old carpeting. Whether you replace it with new carpets or refinish the underlying wood floor is less important than getting rid of an eyesore. Not Worth It: Major kitchen renovations. Same “taste” issue as above. Worth It: Anything that enhances “curb appeal.” If the first thing prospective buyers notice even before exiting their cars is that your roof looks like it’s been whipped by a tornado, chances are you’ve already lost the sale. “It’s a huge turn-off,” says O’Neill, “and makes buyers predisposed to find even more things they don’t like.” Not Worth It: Anything that screams clutter. The less of “you” there is, the more likely prospective buyers are to imagine themselves happily living there.

SPOTLIGHT Sunset Storage By Patty Hutchens Whether you are a resident or a visitor to North Idaho, you know there is no shortage of year round recreational opportunities in this beautiful part of the country. Situated on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, it goes without saying that boating is one of the favorite summertime activities of both residents and tourists. In the winter, snowmobiling through the beautiful terrain is also a popular sport. But what to do with these toys during the off-season can often be an issue. Sunset Storage in Sagle has been in business for 16 years and has continually improved its facilities and added services in order to better serve its customers’ needs.

Corey and Shayla Weishaar are the on-site managers at Sunset Storage and say the security provided, including a private locked gate and the fact they live on the property, help put their customers’ minds at ease. The facility provides boat, RV, car, snowmobile and trailer storage; and finding the right size unit is not a problem at Sunset Storage. “We do not have individual units, but use large warehouses,” said Shayla. “So instead of having to pay for an oversized unit, our customers pay for only the space they use.” In addition to offering limited heated storage, Shayla said that there are additional services available to customers who are storing their boats. Some of the options from which to choose include pick-up and drop off of their boat and trailer, preparing the boat for summer or winter and a power wash to remove residue -whether it is from storage or summer play. “We also provide limited services to our RV customers,” said Shayla, including washing the RV. Sunset Storage offers both six month and one year storage contracts, depending upon the need of the customer.

Shayla and Corey know that security is a top priority of their customers. For that reason, the couple personally loads and unloads every item in the warehouses.
Services Available • Indoor Storage
They have only been in Sandpoint since March of this year when they moved with their two daughters from Cheney, WA, but have already fell in love with the area. Shayla, whose background is in customer service and Corey, who is currently finishing up his bachelor’s degree in business management, say their daughters too enjoy all that Sandpoint has to offer. Sunset Storage operates by appointment only, which allows the family some free time to boat, snowboard and relax by the lake. As for the business, Shayla said she and Corey are thrilled to be part of Sunset Storage. “We are a family run business with the ability to form personal connections with our customers,” said Shayla. “And with competitive pricing, great services and our willingness to take the time and effort to know and work with our customers, there is no way you can go wrong!”

Taking a Few Simple Steps Can Lead to Peace of Mind By Patty Hutchens
R
etirement. The word can conjure up different emotions. Some may look forward to that time in their lives with anticipation of traveling and enjoying all that they have worked so hard for. But for others the thought of retirement can also be scary. They may have been so busy working to make ends meet throughout the years that they have not made a financial plan for later in life. One thing most experts agree upon is that it is never too early or too late to start the process. Financial advisors can help. They will look at your whole financial picture and help you down the path of feeling secure and looking forward to retirement, no matter how far down the road it is. Following are some tips to help get started: Make a plan – In order to start formulating a financial plan, the U.S. Department of Labor recommends beginning the process by calculating your net worth, that is the total value of your assets less your debts. Some experts recommend that in retirement you will need income between 70 to 90 percent of what your gross salary was prior to retirement. Create a budget – When making a current budget, be sure to include putting money away on a monthly basis for retirement. Consult with a financial advisor to learn more about a 401(k) or Roth IRA, both of which can grow significantly over the course of years.

Maximize Your Retirement Plan – About 1/3 of people who have a 401(k) available through their employer do not contribute. If you have one be sure to make monthly contributions to it. Manage Your Mortgage – The goal is to have your mortgage paid off by retirement. But that may not always be feasible. Avoid taking out second mortgages and if you are young, be aware of interest rates and investigate the cost and benefit of refinancing at lower rates. Budget Your Retirement Savings – Just as when you are young, it is equally important to create a budget for when you retire. Include the categories that are important to you whether it is travel or more time to explore a favorite hobby, but do so wisely. You want to be sure that your retirement savings outlives you. Purchase Long Term Care Insurance – You have worked extremely hard for the money you saved and you do not want it to be spent all on healthcare for an injury, illness or end of life caregiving. By purchasing a long term care insurance policy, you will rest comfortably knowing that what can sometimes cost hundreds of thousands of dollars will be covered in large part by insurance. No matter how young or old you are, remember it takes a few simple steps to begin the process of planning. Consult with a professional and carry on with your life with the peace of mind you deserve.

The Facts About Health Care Reform Changes that Could Affect You
living
Taylor Insurance, Inc. Health • Auto • Home Life • Boat
Article Provided by Taylor Insurance
T
he sweeping health care legislation that was signed into law on March 23, 2010, known as the Affordable Care Act or Health Care Reform, will likely affect every American. Its numerous provisions are complex and multifaceted; the once familiar world of health insurance is going through a lot of changes and you need to know about them. Whether you purchase health insurance on your own, have coverage through your employer, are enrolled in a public program, or are uninsured but want to find coverage, you are also likely to be affected by other important changes related to health care reform. For example, many preventive services are now covered in many health plans with no cost-sharing, meaning they are covered at 100 percent. Many young adults up to age 26 can now be covered under their parents’ health plans if those plans include dependent coverage. Children up to age 19 who have preexisting health conditions cannot be denied insurance coverage, effective now. Beginning in 2014, this protection extends to everyone. Individuals and families purchasing insurance in the individual market will be guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions and their premiums cannot vary based on gender or medical history. Beginning in October of 2013, the new state health exchange marketplaces will be available in every state. Here individuals can shop for and buy coverage as well as determine their eligibility for financial assistance to purchase coverage or their eligibility for public health programs such as Medicaid. The health insurance exchange gives you a new way to find health coverage. It should also make it easier for you to compare the costs and benefits of different plans. The exchange will offer different plans that vary by the type of services they provide and how much you have to pay for them. Also plans can’t turn you down because you have a health problem or you’ve had one in the past.
To obtain health insurance from an exchange you must: Be a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant, not be in prison, or lack access to affordable coverage through an employer The exchange will provide tools and information to help you select between options, such as: A website for comparing available plans, information in simple language about how each plan works, a toll-free phone number you can call for help, calculator that shows you how much your options cost, and help with enrolling in government programs such as Medicaid if you’re eligible. The exchanges start providing health coverage in January 2014, but you need to enroll in a plan during the open enrollment period which starts on October 1, 2013. Many people will be able to get tax credits to lower the cost of their coverage. For example, you can get tax credits if you have a yearly income between: $14,856 and $44,680 for a single person and $30,657 and $92,200 for a family of four. The law requires that you have insurance. If you don’t have it through your job or a government program like Medicaid, you have to buy insurance. If you don’t, you pay a penalty. The penalty starts in 2014 at $95 for each adult and $47.50 for each child, up to $285 per family or 1% of your family’s income, whichever is higher. The penalty will rise in 2015 and again in 2016.

Do you have financial protection for your family? Life insurance is more affordable than you might think.
There are still a lot of questions about Healthcare Reform – and parts of the law keep evolving and changing and we will continue to keep you abreast of these changes. Taylor Insurance will continue to work with our existing customers to meet their needs and to provide them with the service and knowledge they’ve come to expect from us as a trusted provider broker of health coverage for more than 20 years – but we also want to be a resource for the general public – a place where you can come and get FREE assistance and enrollment guidance with a smile.

alk into Cedar Street Bridge and you are instantly met with the aroma of gourmet coffee, the sight of freshly homemade gelato, and a display of pastries, fine chocolates, salads and more. Cedar Street Bistro, which opened in 2008, has become a favorite of many residents and tourists alike. Serving organic espresso and coffee drinks, bagel sandwiches, crepes and pastries, the restaurant is also known for its deliciously fresh grilled sandwiches, wraps, soups and salads. For those who are seeking a gluten free meal, they have gluten free bread available as well. “I was pleasantly surprised the first time I went there,” said lifelong Sandpoint resident Zach Spohn, who rates the Bistro’s coffee as the best in Sandpoint. “The Bridge has always been a really cool spot. It’s great to have a place like Cedar Street Bistro in there.” He highly recommends the pulled pork sandwich and said the setting on the historic bridge cannot be beat. But it is not just locals who are buzzing about the wonderful food, drinks and atmosphere offered at the Cedar Street Bistro, a review of the restaurant’s guest book reveals comments from people worldwide about their experience. One Canadian couple writes, “The gelato was awesome, just like what we had in Italy. Delicious paninis and great coffee. We keep coming back for more!” Owners Tim and Manuela Frazier are very hands on in the business and have extremely friendly staff who take pride in providing exceptional service to their customers.
With all the restaurant choices available in Sandpoint, many residents and visitors are repeat customers – a testimony to the quality food and drinks served at Cedar Street Bistro. One out of town couple commented, “We come from San Diego to Sandpoint twice a year. Each trip we are excited to visit the Cedar Street Bistro for lunch and we’ve NEVER been disappointed.”

Mack Diebel, Communications Specialist for the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, said they use Cedar Street Bistro to provide lunches for many of the Chamber’s seminars. “The food at Cedar Street Bistro is hearty, natural and extremely good,” said Mack. “Their sandwiches almost look like works of art.” And he is not the only one who feels that way. The attendees have given rave reviews of the lunches provided, with many actually writing on their seminar evaluations that the food was exceptional and they appreciate the fact the Chamber chooses Cedar Street Bistro as one that provides lunches for the classes. “Tim does an incredible job and is extremely willing to do what he can for us.” In a town that has been voted the Most Beautiful Small Town in America, the Cedar Street Bridge is one of the gems of the downtown. The energy of the people, the beautiful structure, the breathtaking view and the unique stores are all worth the visit. You can shop the displays of unique garden décor at the My Garden shop as well as experience some extraordinary Huckleberry delights at the Huckleberry Depot. But whatever you do, be sure and stop by to experience Cedar Street Bistro. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

alk into Zany Zebra in downtown Sandpoint and you will discover an eclectic assortment of gifts, cards, jewelry, shoes and housewares. But that is not all this whimsical store has to offer; they also have clothes for the young as well as the young at heart. The variety of popular brands of jeans carried by Zany Zebra includes Rock Revival, Miss Me, Silver, and Makers, all at prices below that of regional or national chain stores. Some other popular brands you may recognize when visiting Zany Zebra include Big Buddha Bags, Soludos shoes, Gurgle Pots, Kerisma, Salt Water Sandals and much more. Unique in every way, the merchandise at Zany Zebra is one of a kind, something in which owner Ranel Hanson takes pride. “We go out of our way to collect pieces from all over the world,” said Hanson, who purchased the business in 2006. “Each item is handpicked by our staff.”

Ranel and her staff enjoy the creative and crazy fun the store brings to the customers. They are always delighted to help patrons find the perfect item, whether it is a gift for a special friend or something to dress up their wardrobe. A native of Southern California, Ranel moved to Sandpoint in 1981; a move precipitated by her desire to raise her children in a smaller,

healthier atmosphere than the hustle and bustle of Southern California. The wish to be closer to her brother and sister-in-law was another factor in her decision. It was a move that has brought her much joy. Ranel is married to Ron Hanson and between them they have five children and eight grandchildren. A native of Sandpoint, Ron has a large extended family and Ranel’s mother has called Sandpoint home for the past 19 years. “We are so fortunate to have most of our family living in the area,” said Ranel. Ranel brings her creativity outdoors where she loves to garden and grow flowers. She also enjoys reading and relaxing at the lake, and has a great appreciation for music. The couple has a strong commitment to Sandpoint and does what they can to give back to the community. They support many local events and organizations including the Festival at Sandpoint, the Angels Over Sandpoint, Community Cancer Services, Point to Bay Ride, the Bonner Community Food Bank and much more. While Ranel said her and her employees’ hard work, courage and the ability to enjoy the ride even in difficult times has been a significant factor in the success of her business, she adds that it is her loyal customers who have really made Zany Zebra the success it is today. Five Students Break SHS Athletic and Weight Lifting Records By Patty Hutchens
I
t has been a busy year in the world of Sandpoint High School football. Since Coach Satini Puailoa took over in early 2012, there have been kids turning out for football who never considered doing so before. The enthusiasm among players is high and the energy contagious. Walk into the SHS weight room on any given day after school or during the summer months, and you will find dozens of players lifting weights, running on the treadmill, running drills and doing what they can to maximize their skills prior to the 2013 football season. But it’s not only the players who are there, several coaches are also on hand to supervise and help the young men perfect their techniques. They encourage and support them to be the best they can be on and off the field. That enthusiasm and dedication has paid off.

In the last year four young men who will be sophomores in the fall and one recent graduate have broken school records, some of which have been in existence for over a decade. Colton Engle, Alex Feyen, Brett Hutchens and Kyle Perry have all broken or tied school records for their age group as has Nik Feyen. Engle, who also plays basketball and is on the track team, ran the “I” drill in 3.8 seconds breaking the previous record of 4.0 set by Isao Puailoa, Coach Puailoa’s son.

Alex Feyen tied the record for bench, lifting 330 pounds. He now shares the record with Sandpoint High School teammate Jeffrey Kappen who will be a junior this fall. Brett Hutchens, who until last year was a

dedicated soccer player and had never before played football, committed his free time to training and gaining the strength he needed to compete in his newly discovered sport. The result? A new power clean record at the freshman level of 275 pounds. Not long afterwards his teammate Kyle Perry tied Hutchens’ record, which they now both share. The previous record was held by Matt Lawrence. Hutchens and Perry also share the vertical jump record of 33 inches with Jeremiah Gagnon who set the record a few years ago as a freshman. But those aren’t the only records Perry has broken. He holds the freshman record for total lift with a record 1445, breaking the previous record of 1410. And Perry did more than break the previous record lift for low squats by a freshman - he shattered it. The
previous record was 365 pounds and Kyle now holds the record at 455 pounds, a record that may be around for quite awhile. He also now holds the long jump record at 9 feet 6 inches as well as the 40-yard dash record at 4.51 seconds.
on their own skills, but to encourage one another as well.
For Nik Feyen who graduated in June, he leaves Sandpoint High School with a tie of the senior bench record which is also held by former SHS student Troy Watson. Nik also holds the all time bench record for juniors at 405 pounds.
Colton Engle, who plays corner back on the team, said the training he has done throughout the last year has helped him to increase his speed and make faster cuts. He can run on the treadmill at a top speed of 22 mph and said the training has not only helped him in football, but in basketball and track as well. “I am able to jump in front of the ball and get down the field quicker,” said Colton, who adds that he appreciates the fact the coaches are always there to help instruct him.
What is the common thread among all these young men? It boils down to one word – dedication. All the young men were in the weight room during the off-season. Whether it was after school or during the summer, they made the commitment to be there and not only work
“(My brother) Nik and my friends kept me motivated to come in and lift,” said Alex Feyen. “And when I did I had a lot of fun.”

Brett Hutchens said he found the resistance training he does with bands to be very helpful in his quest to lift heavier weights. “It helps me become more powerful and explosive,” said Hutchens who also credits the vibration platforms with helping him increase his strength and stability. Unfortunately, Hutchens suffered a severe break of his forearm that required surgery this summer and will be unable to play until a few weeks into the season. But that is not stopping him from continuing to do what he can. “I am determined to get my full strength back and be ready to go as soon as possible,” said the sophomore. Nik Feyen will be attending the University of Idaho this fall and said while he only played under Coach Puailoa and his staff for one year, he learned a great deal from all of them. “I was much more motivated my senior year,” said Nik. “They (the coaches) want you to succeed not just for them, but for yourself.”

All of these players agree that the discipline and hard work that has led them to where they are today have taught them lessons far beyond the football field.

“It’s important to make a goal and strive for it,” said Brett Hutchens. Alex Feyen agrees. “Do not give up. Keep striving for what you want to achieve,” he said. Kyle Perry said it is never too early to start working towards your goals. He started coming to the weight room in 8th grade and continued throughout the following summer and his freshman year. “You have to keep pushing at it every day,” said Kyle, who adds that the weight room has become like a second home.
Mike Roos mikeroos@remax.net 208.263.5185
Colton said he advises younger players to stay focused – something that is not always easy to do when entering the new world of high school. For Brett Hutchens who made the switch to football as a freshman, he said it is important to never get discouraged. “Never let someone tell you that you cannot do something. Instead, let it motivate you to prove to them you can.” he said. As Nik Feyen heads off to college, the younger athletes are grateful for the leadership Nik and his teammates have given them over the last year. But they don’t want him to get too comfortable being a record holder. After all, they have three more years to go at Sandpoint High School and each of them is determined to break more records.

Jacey’s Race Four Local Families to Benefit from Fundraiser By Patty Hutchens
I
t all started in March 2001 when Nanci Grayson Jenkins noticed her then four-year-old daughter had a small protrusion from her stomach. After a few frightening days, Nanci’s worst fear was realized. Her daughter Jacey had kidney cancer. After further tests, they discovered the cancer had metastasized and was a stage four. The fight began. As a single mother struggling to take care of both her children, manage Jacey’s illness and pay the bills, Nanci was overwhelmed. It was then that her friends Erin Moore and Ron Jenkins, the man to whom Nanci is now married, did what they could to help. They organized Jacey’s Race, a 5k and 1k run/ walk with the goal of raising funds and awareness of childhood cancer. That was in their former
home of Colorado. Shortly after moving to Sandpoint six years ago, Nanci and her family carried on the tradition of Jacey’s Race. Although Jacey, who will be a senior at Sandpoint High School this fall, says in the medical world there is technically no such thing as being cancer free after a diagnosis, she and her family like to say that she has been cancer free for 11 years. Jacey and her family know all too well that the journey through a life threatening illness can be overwhelming, both financially and emotionally. That is where Jacey’s Race can help. Each year Jacey’s Race benefits certain children in our area who are afflicted with a life threatening disease. There are also donations given to Bonner General Hospital’s Pediatric Department, Wishing Star’s Sandpoint chapter, and Community Cancer Services. Jacey hopes her story can inspire these children who are going through what no child should ever have to. She wants kids to know that at times while it may feel as though there is no hope, they should hold their heads high and keep fighting. “As you grow older and as your body changes due to the treatments you’ve undergone, you may feel different than all of the other kids you play with, you may feel ‘ugly’, but always remember that your body is beautiful and tough as a rock,” said Jacey.
5 Locations To Serve You Better
Deliveries Available
This year’s event brought in over $20,000 which will benefit four children. There were over 700 participants and over 100 volunteers in what has become a tradition for several area residents. It means the world to Jacey who says each year the race serves as a reminder to cherish what she has and what she has accomplished in life. “It provides me with the hope to stay strong in my small troubles because I could be going through the major troubles that these children are going through,” said Jacey who adds the most important thing for her is that the race brings awareness to the community about what it means to have an ill child. In the end Jacey said the best piece of advice she can give is to not let one’s illness define them. “You are your own superhero because you have been through the worst and only you can come out as the best,” she said. “You are different because you are a different person, not because you’ve had or have an illness.”

Ride Idaho
Bicyclists Travel the State to Share Their Love of Community By Patty Hutchens
A
ugust in Sandpoint is perhaps the busiest time of the year. With the Festival at Sandpoint, the Arts and Crafts Fair, the Long Bridge Swim, and Celebrate Life Fun Run / Walk, tourists and residents flock to Memorial Field and downtown to enjoy all the activities. But this year there will be a different group added to the mix. On August 4th and 5th over 350 bicyclists from 38 states and Canada and 40 to 50 volunteers will descend upon Sandpoint and set up camp at City Beach. The cyclists are part of Ride Idaho, a non-profit organization who for 9 years has made an annual seven-day trek through our beautiful state. But the purpose of their journey goes far beyond the desire to view the spectacular landscapes and learn what they can about Idaho’s history. They also strive to make a significant economic impact on communities like Sandpoint while promoting active lifestyles and safe cycling. According to Earl Grief, Director of Ride Idaho, Sandpoint is one of the favorite stopping points for the group. “It cannot get any better than City Beach,” he said pointing out that it is not only a beautiful location, but is also so close to the downtown area. This is the second time the group will be here but is the first time they will be able to truly explore Sandpoint. “Last time (in 2010) they spent one night here,” said Kim Woodruff Parks and Rec Director for the City of Sandpoint. “This time they will be here two nights so they will have an opportunity to really get to know Sandpoint.”
The group will arrive at City Beach at about 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 4th. They have worked closely with the Parks and Rec Department as well as the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association and the Chamber of Commerce to organize the event. “Everyone has been very helpful in getting our needs met,” said Grief. , Instead of the having their meals catered, Ride Idaho is working with the Downtown Sandpoint Business Association to purchase vouchers to be used throughout the area for food, drinks or shopping. “It is nice because we are able to track which businesses are really benefitting from their visit” said DSBA Executive Director Marcy Timblin.
benefit the entire community. The group has activities planned that include a stop at the Bird Aviation Museum, a ride up to Schweitzer, kayaking, a boat cruise and an opportunity to ride in a float plane. And of course there is the shopping and eating out at restaurants. “It’s a great economic boost for our community,” said Woodruff.
In the towns they visit, Ride Idaho funds community development projects. This year they have committed to donating $6000 to the City of Sandpoint to help with the purchase of the mechanized sand and turf cleaner for City Beach. Something Woodruff says has been a long time need. “By charging a registration fee we can give back to the community,” said Grief emphasizing that this particular project will

Four Tips to Avoid the Burn After Workouts Structured Rest Helps Muscles Build Back Faster For Harder, Longer, More Challenging Workouts
M
any Americans equate exercise with pain - they want to “feel the burn” because “there’s no gain without pain.” But when it comes to gaining muscle, rest is just as important as repetition. Exercise causes small tears in muscle fibers. During rest, the body works to repair those muscles, building them back stronger than they were. Experienced athletes know the value of structured rest - many strive to help their
muscles build back as fast as possible so they can move on to harder, longer and more challenging workouts. But even casual athletes and weekend warriors can take steps towards smarter rest. The experts at W.F. Young, Inc., the company that makes Absorbine Jr. pain relieving liquid, offers the following tips: • Start slow. Many people make the mistake of trying to do too much too fast. If you haven’t participated in an activity for a while, ease yourself in start with a moderate 15 to 30 minutes
of activity, and increase duration and intensity by no more than 10 percent each week. Vary your workouts so you give each muscle group one to three days of rest, depending on your fitness level. • Fuel yourself. Prior to a workout, your body needs carbohydrates, so snack on fruit or oats. Consuming an energy drink or bar during long workouts can help boost your muscles’ glycogen, or energy stores, so you won’t feel as sore post-workout. August 2013 | Sandpoint Living Local 41

Tips to Get Better Sleep And Lower Risk of Stroke
A
ccording to David H. Stone, M.D., a vascular surgeon at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, poor sleep is one factor that can lead to stroke.
“Research says less than six hours a night increases the risk of stroke symptoms fourfold among middle age to older adults who had a normal weight and low risk for obstructive sleep apnea,” said Dr. Stone. “Lack of sleep increases inflammation, blood pressure and the release of certain hormones, which create a greater stress response that increases stroke risk.” Following are important tips for a good night sleep:
QUICK TIP
* Get a comfortable, firm bed for spine and body support and ease of movement. People with chronic pain can use a heated waterbed, airbed or foam mattress; an electric blanket, or mattress pad on low heat or a wool mattress pad that provides heat are useful for cool or damp nights. * Temperatures higher than 75 degrees or less than 54 disrupt sleep. Researchers suggest cooler rather than hotter rooms; use a vaporizer or humidifier if needed as moist heat leads to better sleep. Clear space
around the bed with only necessary items placed on a nightstand. * Refrain from stimulants like cigarettes, diet pills and caffeine.
Ask about our Patient Loyalty Program!
* Avoid electronic devices an hour before you go to bed -- they disrupt sleep rhythms.
A healthy body starts with a healthy mouth!
* Avoid diuretics before bedtime. Unless told to increase fluids by your doctor, reduce them prior to sleep. Eating before bed is not recommended; a glass of warm milk at bedtime is acceptable.
FESTIVAL SPECIAL! $69 for Exam, X-Rays, and Necessary Cleaning*
* To wind down read a chapter of a book or take a warm bath. To fall asleep, try distraction. Count backwards or try relaxation tapes. * Go to bed and get up at the same time daily. Afternoon naps are allowed, but not after dinner. * Get outside on sunny days to regulate your body’s internal clock. Exercise at the same time during the day but not before bed. * Reset your sleep clock. Go to bed an hour earlier or later each day until you reach the hour you want to go to sleep. To learn more about your vascular health, visit the Society for Vascular Surgery’s website at www.VascularWeb.org.

Rare Flower Jolts Skin’s Vitality The Key to Smoother, Younger-Looking Skin
W
hen it comes to healthier skin, flower power isn’t such a ridiculous idea. Haberlea rhodopensis, a rare Resurrection Flower, might be the key to smoother, younger-looking skin.
The plant’s unique ability to revitalize tis own cells may allow it to create visibly healthier, younger-looking skin in humans. 44 Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com
Indigenous to the harsh, arid Rhodopes Mountain Range in Bulgaria, the flower has adapted to survive in extremely arid conditions and can survive periods of dryness in a suspended state for up to 31 months. Even after drying out completely, a few drops of moisture are enough for the plant to return to normal growth. It will resume its usual functions in a matter of hours and achieve full recovery in one to two days. For this reason, it is sometimes called a “Resurrection Flower.” The plant’s unique ability to revitalize its own cells may allow it to create visibly healthier, younger-looking skin in humans. In young women, the skin replaces its cells every 28 days. Some studies show that by age 40, skin takes 40 days to replenish itself. This contributes to changes in the skin’s appearance that most women dislike, including a rougher texture, less elasticity, and more fine lines and wrinkles. However, Haberlea rhodopensis may have both a protective and a vitality-stimulating effect on skin. One company, Kiehl’s, has added a high concentration of the Resurrection Flower to a new

o doubt you’ve been starting to hear about the new Health Insurance Marketplace, a key part of the health care law that will be open for business on Oct. 1. But you probably still have questions. Well, we’ve got answers. The best place for the latest, most accurate information on the Marketplace is the updated website HealthCare.gov. At the site you can learn what it is, who can apply for insurance, how to get insurance, how to lower your costs, and more. The Marketplace will help you find health insurance that fits your budget and meets your needs, with less hassle. If you own a small business, there’s information for you too. No matter where you live, you may buy insurance from private health plans that cover a comprehensive set of benefits, including doctor visits, hospital stays, preventive care and prescriptions. And plans in the Marketplace can’t deny you coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

You’ll be able to take control with better information, including details about benefits and prices presented in clear language you can understand, so you’ll know what your premiums, deductibles and other costs will be before you make a choice. Once you’ve decided on a plan, you don’t need to go anywhere else. Starting in October, you’ll be able to enroll in the Marketplace directly for coverage that begins Jan. 1, 2014. Want help or need more information? Looking for a Great Night Sleep? Talk to These Locals. They May Have the Solution. By Patty Hutchens
T
ooth decay. Swollen gums. Difficulty chewing or swallowing. A regular check up. These are all reasons to visit your dentist. But what about excessive fatigue, snoring, or problems concentrating? These are signs of a sleep apnea disorder and thanks to recently developed dental appliances, visiting your dentist may be one of the answers to overcome sleep apnea and its effects. Sleep apnea is a disorder where a person temporarily ceases to breathe while asleep. This can occur up to dozens of times an hour and each episode can last up to a minute. While often undiagnosed, it is estimated that 18 million Americans suffer from the disorder. The majority of people with sleep apnea have soft tissue in the back of the throat that collapses and closes the airway so one repeatedly stops breathing. In most cases, patients are not even aware of these episodes and are continuing to stress the body without even knowing it. Because the brain then receives a signal to arouse the sufferer from his or her sleep, the result is a night of restless sleep. But the results can be more than just fatigue, the continued lack of oxygen can also result in health problems such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and weight gain just to name a few. Dr. Jim Lewis and Dr. Mark Hawn have learned a great deal about the disorder through their training and certification in Oral Appliance Therapy. A custom-made dental appliance works to reposition the tongue and pull the lower jaw forward opening up the airway. The result is a reduction in apnea episodes and often total elimination of snoring. “When you are struggling to get oxygen it is amazing what negative effects it can have on the body,” said Dr. Hawn. When effectively treated, “the patient is getting more oxygen which ultimately means they may be able to live longer,” adds Dr. Lewis. Dr. Lewis & Dr. Hawn have seen remarkable improvement in their patients who use the Sleep Apnea Appliances. Although Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hawn are treating their dental patients who suffer from snoring and sleep apnea, they welcome new patients as well. Northwest Sleep Solutions is a separate entity from their dental practice, which allows Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hawn to treat patients for strictly their apnea condition while keeping their current practitioner
informed of their progress. Even though a patient may show signs in their mouth that might suggest they suffer from sleep apnea, Dr. Hawn cautions that sleep apnea is a medical condition which must be diagnosed by the patient’s medical provider. Most medical doctors will prescribe a CPAP machine and mask for the patient to wear while sleeping. Unfortunately statistics show that 25 to 50 percent of patients either do not comply with or cannot tolerate a CPAP machine. That is where Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hawn can step in. “If the patient cannot tolerate a CPAP, their doctor has the option to refer their patient to us,” said Dr. Lewis recognizing that the mask and machine are cumbersome and can be uncomfortable for patients. The dental appliance is much like wearing a retainer on both the upper and lower teeth.
James B. Lewis, D.M.D. Mark W. Hawn, D.D.S.
While the diagnosis must be made by a medical doctor, Dr. Hawn states that there are signs that he and Dr. Lewis look for when performing a dental exam. The signs include: large tongues, large neck size, scalloped boarder of tongue, large tonsils, just to name a few. They also can often see by looking at a patient’s teeth if they have acid reflux. “Uncontrolled high blood pressure can also be a sign,” said Dr. Lewis. To help a patient determine if they suffer from sleep apnea, Dr. Lewis and Dr. Hawn can send a patient home with a monitor they wear for one night that will record the patient’s breathing rate, oxygen level and potential apnea episodes. It is not only Drs. Lewis and Hawn who are certified in Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance Therapy, but their entire staff is as well. One employee’s job is to serve exclusively as sleep coordinator. She talks to the patients about their symptoms, coordinates with medical doctors and educates the patients so they begin their path to a healthier more restful lifestyle. “We continually strive to be better clinicians, not just in dentistry, but in our patients’ overall health,” said Lewis. Plan Ahead for Safe Senior Driving No one wants to admit that aging affects their ability to drive safely. But experts agree that, although not all drivers are the same, driving ability generally begins to deteriorate around age 55. Kathleen Marvaso, AAA’s vice president of Public Affairs, said that as the population ages, senior-driver safety is becoming an increasingly relevant and challenging issue for many families. “Many adult children of senior drivers are looking for help navigating this new and sometimes challenging road,” she said. “Our research shows that one of the biggest questions is how to begin the conversation.” AAASeniors.com, AAA’s senior safety and mobility web site, offers the following advice: • Plan ahead. It’s never too early to begin the conversation. Planning ahead means you can discuss gradual adjustments that may be needed over time as a senior gets older. Sometimes, just a few simple adjustments, such as avoiding night or highway driving, can help prolong a senior’s safe driving years. • Approach the conversation with safety as the main objective. Because driving is such a big part of independence, AAA advises to be prepared to face some resistance from the senior driver. Having facts and concrete examples available will help; and a caring tone may make all the difference.

• Talk about the issue during discussions about retirement. Take the same careful approach to transportation that you would with finances and other retirement-related decisions. Future transportation needs may affect other retirement decisions, such as selecting a retirement home. For example, convenience to public transportation or the availability of onsite transportation become important criteria. “At AAA, we want to foster a society where older adults can remain confident and independent and live to their full potential,” Marvaso said. “AAASeniors.com gives seniors and their families the tools necessary to create an action plan to help manage the inevitable consequences of aging, and to help seniors drive for as long as safely possible -- and remain mobile thereafter.” In addition to information about how aging affects driving, and tips for talking to seniors about safe driving, AAASeniors.com also provides an expert advice section, driving skills assessment tools, tips for choosing a safer car, fact sheets, brochures, and referrals to driverimprovement courses and free community-based programs.

Business SPOTLIGHT
Floor Show By Patty Hutchens
Chet Whitney has lived in Sandpoint his entire life. He has seen a great deal of change over the years, but his business philosophy has never wavered. “I never buy anything out of town,” said Chet of his desire to support not only local businesses, but also the community as a whole. He and his wife Terry purchased The Floor Show in 1986, and it is their loyal customers and high referral rate that has helped them to succeed in what was at times a down economy. The store was originally on Second Avenue in downtown and later moved to First Avenue. In late 2007 they moved to their current location on Kootenai Cutoff Road in Ponderay in order to have more parking and a larger showroom for their growing customer base. The showroom is 4000 square feet and is A Mohawk Color Center Elite store. In 2009 they were awarded Mohawk’s ‘Dealer of the Year’ for the northwest. Chet’s son Chad is part owner and manager at the store and will eventually take over the family run business. They enjoy working with their customers and assisting them in choosing the best product for each customer’s taste and budget. “We do all interior except for paint or light fixtures,” said Chet. The Floor Show carries natural stone, porcelain tile, carpet, hardwood, window coverings, counter tops and more. In fact Chet said suppliers have told him that The Floor Show carries the largest selection of porcelain and ceramic tile they have seen. “People who come in often remark that they did not realize we carry so many products.” Both Chad and Chet are sensitive to the fact that there is as much a variety to one’s budget as there is to one’s tastes. For that reason they carry everything from the high end products to carpet and laminate for even the smallest budget. It is their customer service and business philosophy that sets them apart. “People remember that, and it has resulted in a lot of referrals from our current customers,” said Chad who adds there is no job too big or too small for them.

They also have an interior designer available to consult with clients for a minimal fee. She gets to know the customer, their tastes and budget and works with them to pick out a product for one room or a whole house. Giving back to the community that supports them is important to the Whitneys. They frequently donate carpet and tile to teachers who need them for their classrooms and also enjoy doing what they can for Habitat for Humanity ReStore. In the end the top priority for Chet and Chad is customer satisfaction. “The product they choose is a big decision and is something they will have to live with for quite some time,” said Chet. “We want it to be the product that is right for them.” STORE HOURS: Monday-Friday 8-5, Saturday 10-3, Closed Sunday. Is Your Pet’s Bad Breath Dogging You? Preventative Oral Care For Your Pet
Y
our pet is a beloved family member. You buy him comfy pillows and squeaky toys, premium kibble and trips to the groomer. But if you’re like most pet owners, you’re neglecting a major part of pet medical care -- their mouth. Oral disease, which includes periodontal disease or gum disease, is the most common disorder in cats and dogs. The internal research team of Banfield, The Pet Hospital (www.banfield.net), supports findings that 68 percent of cats and 78 percent of dogs over the age of 3 display signs of oral disease, including bad breath, pain while chewing, weight loss, yellow teeth, red or swollen gums, missing teeth, nasal discharge or tearing or swelling below one eye. There are four stages of periodontal disease, starting with mild plaque and gingivitis and progressing to major gum recession and tooth loss. Dogs and cats use their mouths like we use our hands, so dental disease can seriously affect their ability to eat and play. Worse,
evidence suggests a link between gum disease and other serious health problems. “Periodontal disease has also been associated with changes in a pets’ kidneys, liver and cardiac functions,” said Jeffrey Klausner, DVM, MS, DACVIM, senior vice president and chief medical officer for Banfield. “In short, unhealthy teeth can lead to an unhealthy pet in ways pet owners can’t imagine.” Experts emphasize that prevention is the best medicine. In addition to regular exams, Banfield recommends that pet owners brush their pets’ teeth every day or at least two or three times a week. Feeding pets firm kibble can help slow down plaque formation, as can dental chew toys and dental-specific water additives. By visiting your veterinarian, you will be provided a manageable at home dental plan that is easy to follow. And remember, proper dental care for your pet is as important as routine vaccinations.
Dog Play One of the best ways to turn our dog or puppy into a model citizen is to play fun games with him. Dog play will help keep a dog busy, as well as channel his energy into fun and constructive activities, that does not involve any property destruction. Dog play will also help with obedience training, deepen our dog relationship, and establish us as the pack leader. Important things to remember while playing with your dog: Establish dog play rules and enforce them consistently. Remember to have frequent breaks during play so that the dog can refocus his attention on us. Frequent breaks will also prevent our dog from getting over-excited, and losing control of himself. Keep sessions short, interesting, and rewarding. Stop playing before the dog gets bored, so that he will always want more. DOG GAME - WATER HOSE The water-hose can also be used to create a fun chasing game for our dogs. First, set the water-hose nozzle so that it shoots out a jet of water. Then move the jet around for your dog to chase. The big advantage of this game is that you can use it to give your dog a bath. A dog may get obsessed with and want to attack the water-hose. If he exhibits this attacking behavior, then enforce strict play-rules or stop playing the game. The water-hose game is not for everyone. Some dogs may not like water, even when used in play.

Four Tips to Lead Your Dog to Better Health Just like people, dogs feel much better when they are healthy. But unlike people, dogs can’t take care of themselves. To keep your favorite furry friend on the track to wellness and better living, follow these tips: •
•
•
Exercise builds efficient bodies. Nothing makes a pooch happier than a stroll through the neighborhood. And while your dog’s satisfying his curiosity by sniffing trees and bushes, he’s also burning calories. For more intense physical activity, try throwing some balls or frisbees. This should make your dog run a little harder, helping expand lung capacity and tone muscle. No matter what activity you choose, your canine companion will enjoy the benefits of regular exercise while forging a stronger bond with you in the process. Protect your smiles. You probably remember to brush your own teeth, but doggie dental care often goes by the wayside. For dogs that are temperamental about pet owners or vets touching their teeth, a simple and effective solution can be found using a new type of probiotics, called Teddy’s Pride Oral Care (www. MyTeddysPride.com), that has been designed specifically for the oral care needs of dogs and cats. These probiotics can be used in addition to brushing or as a standalone oral care routine.
owners to give them the best possible nutrition. For dogs, make sure that the first ingredient listed is, for example, “Chicken,” not “Chicken Flavor” or “Dog Food with Chicken” -items that list the name of the meat contain 95 percent of that ingredient, while the “with” designation means that the food only contains 3 percent of chicken or beef. •
Visit the vet regularly. Similar to people visiting the doctor, dogs need regular veterinary care. Every dog has potential health risks it must guard against -- and many risks vary according to dog breed. Your dog’s veterinarian will let you know when recommended vaccinations are due, give proper care to keep your dog healthy and notify you about potential health risks and treatments.

t has been 10 years since Sandpoint resident Jenny Meyer organized the first Celebrate Life Fun Run / Walk. A young mother battling breast cancer, Jenny knew the value of a kind gesture to someone who, like her, was struggling each day, and she wanted to do what she could to raise funds to help make their lives a little bit easier. With assistance from her sister Julie Walkington and Julie’s friend January Tuinstra, both of whom are nurses, the three began what is now a tradition for many residents and visitors.
gathering took place July 27th on the Long Bridge to unveil a special gift in their honor. It is a beautiful bench created by Idaho Granite Works with an inscription that includes a pair of boxing gloves, a symbol of Jenny’s fight against the disease. There is also the Celebrate Life logo along with a message of gratitude to Julie and January for carrying on Jenny’s dream.
Sadly, Jenny lost her battle with cancer in June 2008, but not before she was able to make a difference in so many people’s lives. Today, her spirit lives on. On August 10th the Tenth Annual Celebrate Life Fun Run/Walk will take place.
One of the organizers of the surprise unveiling is Victoria Stotts who knows all too well the importance of the Celebrate
The bench was placed along the very path that Celebrate Life participants will travel on August 10th.
The proceeds from the event are used in a variety of ways to help ease the burden a diagnosis brings to cancer patients and their families. “From her experiences with her own cancer diagnosis, she realized unexpected gestures - simple, unique and practical - are welcomed and appreciated by those with cancer and their families who support them,” said Julie. Over the past nine years Celebrate Life has raised nearly $140,000. These funds are distributed through Bonner General Hospital’s Outpatient Clinic, Home Health, Hospice and Kootenai Cancer Center at BGH. Funds are used for such things as grocery and gas vouchers, firewood, house cleaning, massages, airfare, medication, monetary assistance, medical equipment and other special and unique requests. Life event and the difference an unexpected gift can make. She moved here 10 years ago and worked with Julie at Bonner General Hospital. Then two years ago, at the age of 34, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Today after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, Victoria is cancer free. She said it was the kindness of Julie, January and others that helped her through the most difficult time in her life. “They have helped so many of us (cancer patients),” said Victoria. “And they are so humble.” Going through chemotherapy in the cold winter months, Victoria’s vehicle was without a heater. Life were given to her so that she could repair her car. “They also surprised me with a special lunch at Trinity with my husband,” said Victoria. Victoria credits Cindy Kopsa, a CNA at Bonner General Hospital who works alongside Julie, with the idea of a gift for Julie and January. “It was all Cindy’s idea. She is very passionate about doing something for them,” said Victoria. Cindy first became involved with Celebrate Life during its second year. She helps with the balloon arch as well as the sponsorship letters. As a CNA and a community member, Cindy sees firsthand the difference the Celebrate Life funds make in the lives of others.
She also had the privilege of knowing Jenny through her work as a CNA and because she was Julie’s sister. She considers it an honor to be able to help January and Julie carry on the Celebrate Life tradition. When trying to decide what to do to honor Jenny’s memory and the work of January and Julie, Cindy said she thought it was appropriate to have something that was visible to the entire community and that people would see each time they walk along the Celebrate Life route. “We need as a community to thank them (Julie and January) for what they do for everyone else,” said Cindy, who adds the donations for the bench came from private individuals who not only donated, but kept the surprise secret until the July 27th unveiling. As for Julie, it is all about honoring her sister’s memory. “No words can ever capture how important that is to me. I not only get to have a part in being able to assist those in the Sandpoint and surrounding communities, I am honoring her memory and everything that was important to her,” said Julie. “Being a part of the nursing profession, we know how great the need is for assistance, simple gestures, practical needs, beyond the illness itself.” For more information on how to donate or participate in this year’s event, log onto www.celebratelifefunrunwalk.org.
