REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? Our market continues to favor Sellers. Good news for Buyers – Summer is here, and more properties are entering the market, especially waterfront. Mortgage lenders are still offering extremely low rates. Three tips for navigating this market: 1. Engage the help of a local agent and full-time professionals who are experts in the market you are entering. Get their advice on aspects that affect use and value. 2. Sellers, you currently have the advantage of high demand and relatively low supply. Devise a strategy for timing your sale, price your home or land accordingly and know your next step. 3. Buyers, be ready. Cash offers tend to take priority in this market. Approach your search with proof of your purchasing ability and keep an open mind to a property’s long-term potential. Is now a good time to buy or sell? I always say when the time is right for you, the time is right.
Our market is constantly changing.
What is important to me remains the same - God, Family and Relationships. Contact Jackie Suarez, your local expert for help with your real estate needs. hen we think of the Fourth of July, one of the first things that comes to mind is fireworks—of course! Then there’s the paid day off from work for many, and a day spent at the lake, beach, river or park, or even a celebration spent relaxing and socializing in the backyard with a barbecue.

But many people often forget why this is a day of celebration for us here in the United States. What is the significance of July 4? Let’s freshen up on some history. July 4 marks an incredibly significant day for us Americans, as it commemorates the day the United States officially became its own nation, as the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776—and America was born. Although the Fourth of July has been celebrated each year since 1776, it didn’t become a federal holiday until nearly a century later, in 1870. And it wasn't until 1941 that it became a paid holiday for federal employees.
have fought for this nation and those who continue to fight each and every day to ensure our freedoms and safety. Those who serve the greater nation as active-duty military (and our veterans), and those who serve closer to home as firefighters and policemen and women; they all have a significant role to serve and protect. May we never forget that these men and women sacrifice daily so that we may live our lives knowing that our families, our friends, our communities, our nation, are being protected every second, every minute, every hour of every day … all because of those who have dedicated their lives to ensuring the greater good for each person in our nation. We at Like Media want to say, “Thank you.” As we celebrate Independence Day, remember that there are those on the front lines who instead of spending time with their loved ones on this holiday are in uniform ready to protect at any moment. Let’s remember to honor them this July 4.

Beach-Lover’s Paradise in the Northwest FURNISHING A CHARMING WATERFRONT HOME By Deann Hammer, Interior Designer
Interior Designer Deann Hammer recently furnished a charming waterfront home. The homeowner is a single woman in her mid-30s, who is bright and talented, and owns her own mortgage company. The client requested a coastal theme with a “Serena and Lily Co.” feel.
T
he woodwork was gorgeous but a bit too heavy, so we had the balusters on the stairs painted Sherwin Williams high reflective white to lighten things up. The walls were originally yellow, so we cooled things down by painting all the walls Sherwin Williams Rhinestone. It is a lovely color that plays well off of the water and contrasts the white trim nicely. The kitchen was previously updated by the former owner, although the dining banquette needed a refresh. Our designers selected new bench seat cushion fabric in Sunbrella Grey Ticking, added custom decorative pillows, and punched up the seating area with three large woven grass

light pendants that give the space warmth and drama. A solid walnut modern single-pedestal dining table was also added to set the stage. The great room is quite large, so we added a 6x4-foot tall wide custom framed octopus art piece above the mantle and an extra-large woven round mirror over the TV to play off of the extra high ceiling height. Two seating areas were created to break up the large expanse. The chairs by the fireplace are from Palacek, with custom performance fabric (wet bathing suits are okay!), and they are flanked by solid brass drink tables. A freestanding bar cabinet rests near the fireplace for a refreshing cocktail after a day in the sand. The large sectional is custom made in a performance fabric as well to handle dogs and beach life. The coffee table is made from ground seashells and is called the “Clamshell Lava Table” by Palacek. It is cast in a polymeric plaster with crushed up shells on the top, giving it a lustrous shimmer to the finish.

The themes are timeless, with custom-made art and oars hanging on the wall with a gentle nod to the sea
Upstairs, the loft is adjacent to the client’s open office area and is a wonderful place to sit and watch the sea life swim by. We placed a large sectional with a limestone coffee table so she can put her feet up and relax without having to worry about scratching a table or leaving water marks on her table. The upstairs guest rooms are darling with twin end-to-end built-in beds in one room, and a queen bed in the other. The themes are timeless, with custom-made art and oars hanging on the wall with a gentle nod to the sea without overwhelming the space with nick knacks and shells in glass vases, typically seen in a beach motif. There is a sitting area in the second bedroom with ottoman and floor lamp for private guest lounging, and a coffee bar in the hall outside that room for easy access from the office for a quick pick-me-up while working, or for guests. Deann and her team were truly blessed to be a part of this special home.

On the most basic level, the healthier you are, and the better you take care of yourself, the lower your health-care bills will likely be during retirement, which will affect the amount you need to put away for health care. And you also may need to prepare for the costs of long-term care, which can be enormous—in fact, a private room in a nursing home can easily cost $100,000 per year, according to the insurance company Genworth.

Turning ideas into actions By Trish Buzzone, Thinking Partner, Executive Director, The John Maxwell Team

How are we making a difference for others, for None of this happened by accident. our community and for ourselves? Kevin chose Who is working on that? to learn a trade. Ten years later, Kevin opened his own air conditioning company. He still had the same passion to serve that led him into the military, and Kevin built his company from the ground up with service baked into its DNA. As the company grew, he hired other veterans, because he knew they would exemplify the spirit of service that had become his brand. Kevin also wanted to give guys fresh out of the military an opportunity to build a good life as civilians. He’d seen fellow veterans struggle, and Kevin knew if he helped them find purpose, they would have the opportunity to thrive. Today, decades after he started in that warehouse, Kevin and his team continue to make a difference. They’re helping retired veterans with household needs, so they live comfortably; helping recent veterans find meaningful work; and helping them get connected with the training and services they need to build a good life for themselves and their families. They’re also active with the local Boys & Girls Club, making sure kids know how to take right action at a young age, so they have the best opportunities to grow into the people they want to become. While doing those things, he saw other opportunities to meet needs: job training, education, counseling, encouragement …. Once again, he chose to act. Looking for opportunities to serve and choosing to act is something all of us are able to do. Kevin’s story shows how a person aware of opportunities and willing to act makes a big difference. Today, let’s celebrate our independence by asking ourselves: What matters to me? Who is working on that? How can I get involved? Then, when we find the answers, act on them. All of us have the ability and the opportunity to make a difference. When we do, it will encourage others to do the same. And, when you do, please share it with me. I’d love to hear your story!

PET
STERILIZATION
S
By Drs. Talitha Neher and Dawn Mehra North Idaho Animal Hospital
ince the domestication of most furry pet species, the topic of sex organ removal remains controversial. The pendulum swings as time flies and new scientific discoveries lead us to more options and consequent suggestions regarding pet sterilization timing and procedure. First, let's get the veterinary jargon straight—one of our “pet” peeves is the misuse of the word neuter. After a quick dictionary definition, we will explain why and when veterinarians recommend sterilization, then we will dive into a few relatively new surgery techniques currently being offered at North Idaho Animal Hospital (NIAH).
passionate about this procedure. Also, conventional ovary and testicle removal decreases the risk of breast, testicular, ovarian and prostate cancer, and decreases the risk of serious uterine infection (pyometra). For these reasons, veterinarians neutered with zeal for many decades, often at pre-puberty when the surgery was less complicated. When evidence of obesity, urinary leakage, orthopedic and hormonal diseases, and cancer were being correlated with sterilization in some (mostly large breed) canines, we followed the science and delayed the surgery to postpuberty, after bone and organ maturity.
Neuter: To remove the sexual organs or their ability to function.
In addition to the conventional ovariohysterectomy (OVH)—removal of ovary and uterus—many females benefit from ovary sparing spay (OSS). Males can now receive a vasectomy instead of a castration (sounds better, doesn't it?!). The latter two procedures leave the hormone-producing organs in the body, which is thought to boost joint, bone, mental and physical health. Recent research in certain large-breed canines points to a decrease in non-sex organ cancer and joint injury rate, which complicates our surgery decisions even more. We now have to decide when and how to perform sterilization; the complexity lies in the potential benefits and risks, including behavior change, of any decision.
The female operation was nicknamed the "spay," which in old English means “cut with a sword” (the ovaries). Ouch! The "castration" is the true term for removing the testicles of a male animal. Most of us use the word neuter to describe male sex surgery. Why? We don't know. Maybe "castration" sounds too harsh! Sterilization significantly reduces sheltered or homeless pets all over the world, and it's likely one of the original reasons veterinarians became so 30

The complexity lies in the potential benefits and risks, including behavior change, of any decision.
North Idaho Animal Hospital veterinarians offer a variety of canine sterilization options based on the individual animal, its age, breed, genetic history, overall risk of cancer and obesity, and pet parent preference and budget. As mentioned above, each procedure comes with pros and cons. For example, when we remove the uterus and ovaries or testicles at a specified age, we eliminate uterus, mammary, prostatic and testicular diseases. We also decrease the drive to copulate—male dogs will travel miles for a ready mate—and ultimately a traumatic death from an automobile or train. This is another potential increase in lifespan. The challenge is to weigh these benefits with the health benefits of leaving the organs behind (above). Some veterinarians believe the compromise is often to sterilize (with or without leaving the sex organs) a few months after puberty, especially in large-breed animals.

ith this year’s Independence Day falling on a Sunday, what better way to celebrate the Fourth of July than all weekend long? And that’s exactly what you can do, with some great celebrations taking place right here in Sandpoint for 2021. Though the Sandpoint Lions Club took a break in 2020 due to the pandemic, they’re back, and better than ever, ready to bring back the Fourth of July Celebration Sandpoint’s known and been enjoying for more than 50 years! The much anticipated community event will put Sandpoint’s many local businesses on display, while celebrating the community and all residents—inspiring this year’s theme: “It Takes a Community.” Those businesses, organizations and individuals who would like to take part in the Grand Parade have until the morning of the parade to turn in their applications. It will be all smiles as the Children’s Parade makes its way through town starting at 9am, followed by the Grand Parade at 10.

As you celebrate the day, whether barbecuing at home, out on the water or relaxing at City Beach, be sure to make your way back to City Beach to take in the spectacular fireworks show as it lights up our North Idaho sky beginning at dusk. If you’re looking to get in the holiday spirit a day early, there’s a new tradition planting its roots this year. The Idaho Club will be hosting its first ever BBQ Bonanza on July 3. Held at The Idaho Club, treat your family and friends to a special “zesty” barbecue all day long, with a beer garden opening at 4pm, and a concert by the Last Chance Band, who will be performing live on the putting green from 5 to 9pm. No reservations required for general admission; RSVP to reserve a patio VIP table. Having the opportunity to celebrate our independence with the community of people we love reminds us of the importance of our freedoms we often take for granted. God bless America! A New Culinary Chapter set to Begin Local restaurateur excited for his next endeavor
By Jillian Chandler
I
t was 2009 when Café Trinity began to outgrow its space on Sandpoint’s First Avenue, which turned out to be ideal timing for the restaurant and its owners, as the lease was soon set to expire. And as fate would have it, an incredible location in the heart of City Beach became available—and Trinity at City Beach was born. “City Beach is one of Sandpoint’s greatest, most underutilized assets in our community,” says Justin Dick, owner of Trinity at City Beach. “It’s been an amazing ride to serve the locals, tourists and, in some cases, the wildlife, and play host to some of the most memorable gatherings and nonprofit events.” In September 2022 (originally scheduled for September 2021), the Best Western, in which Trinity at City Beach currently resides, is set to be torn down. Though this will end one chapter of the Dicks’ legacy, it has prompted the start of a new chapter. Justin and wife Shaunavee recently purchased the 113 Main Street location in downtown Sandpoint, which will be home to a new restaurant. While Trinity will remain open (and is set to return to City Beach once the hotel rebuilds), they are moving forward with their new eatery, and it will open as a separate concept to its sister restaurant; the name still yet to be determined. Nearly everything on the menu will be fresh and new; that is, until they absorb Trinity once it closes its kitchen for the final time. What will remain the same is much of the staff, according to Justin. “We have an unbelievable opportunity to cross-train staff among both locations and move staff freely between the two restaurants as events pop up and business volume changes for each locale.” The new—emphasis on new—restaurant will be a great relief to Justin and his team, as everything will be new! New floor. New kitchen. New equipment. New bar. “I’ve been putting bandaids on mortal wounds for the better part of six years at Trinity in anticipation of the building teardown—and I’m out of bandaids,” he reflects. Guests can expect a space that is warm, cozy, open and inviting, with a touch of rustic and modern. The restaurant will seat between 75 and 80 guests and will include ample bar seating as well as outdoor dining.

Justin and Shaunavee are dedicated to creating a dining destination that will appeal to everyone. “Our favorite part of having Trinity at City Beach is the wide reach of customers we have served from all walks of life and backgrounds, locals and tourists, and the many newcomers to the area,” smiles Justin. “We aim to have inclusive food and beverage services for everyone; the overall experience will be defined by the customer, not us.
“We learned many years back that the customers will help refine your services, but ultimately, we are responsible for providing great service and the highest quality products at affordable prices.” Having been a part of the restaurant industry for more than a decade, Justin is grateful for the opportunity that has been afforded him to be a part of the community as a person, volunteer and business owner. “My wife and I are eternally grateful for the support of this community and our staff. We’ve always tried to live by the motto, ‘Give back to the community that has given so much to you.’”

t the height of summer, many football players instead have their sights set on the upcoming fall, their season to shine. Through the years, it’s been clear that Sandpoint’s local high school and middle school football teams create an undeniably infectious energy that is closely felt by the entire community. This closeness is created through mutual respect and support. “We have the most supportive community a coach could ask for,” Sandpoint High Football Coach Ryan Knowles shared, looking forward to leading his team into the upcoming season. Each fall, Sandpoint’s youth football teams rely on community support in its many forms, from game encouragement and attendance, to the critical preseason process of fundraising. That’s where the Sandpoint Football Foundation comes in. The Sandpoint Football Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides fundraising support to football associations in the greater Sandpoint area.
Through their efforts to gather financial support, the foundation provides essential opportunities for the kids and the football programs they participate in. “Every year, it’s a chance for our team to get out and shake hands,” Knowles said of Sandpoint High School’s participation in the foundation’s fundraising efforts. “A lot of our community wants to connect with our youth. We get a chance to meet a lot of good people and give them a chance to win a big prize.” This year’s biggest fundraiser is the Taylor and Sons Sandpoint Football Foundation Truck Raffle, promising a big prize indeed. Sponsored by local dealership Taylor and Sons Chevrolet, the grand prize is a 2021 Chevy Colorado, boasting features like a color touchscreen, Bluetooth audio streaming, a rear-vision camera, and more. With a cherry red tint coat and jet-black interior, the truck is valued at a total of $33,575, making it a very big win for one lucky raffle ticket holder this fall.

The foundation holds a raffle ticket fundraiser every year, designating half of the proceeds to benefit the players at an individual level. Individual costs include football program dues, camp costs, and gear, gloves and cleats. The remainder of the proceeds benefit the program as a whole, paying for team-issued gear like practice jerseys, girdles, shoulder pads and helmets, as well as travel gear, food items, and overhead costs. The raffle ticket sales help ensure local players meet their financial obligations while staying outfitted in the safest gear. According to Sandpoint High School, players are provided equipment of the highest quality from a safety standpoint, and the player count is growing. This year, the high school alone expects over 130 players who will require protective gear and equipment. Community members and football fans can purchase tickets online through the foundations’ website at SPBulldogs.com, or from the players directly. Every $5 donation will purchase a ticket to enter the grand prize drawing.
“We have been working very hard this offseason, and I look forward to that paying off,” Knowles shared. “We have a balanced schedule of playing bigger and smaller schools, but all the teams we play have a reputation of being physically tough. I am excited to show how tough we are.”
The winner of the brand-new Chevy Colorado will be drawn at halftime at Sandpoint High’s Homecoming Game on October 1. This year’s Homecoming Game will be played against Lake City at Barlow Stadium, with halftime estimated to take place near 8pm.
Taylor and Sons Chevrolet is located on Highway 95 in North Ponderay. They are a renowned family owned dealership serving Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene.
Opportunities to support the foundation’s efforts are endless, with no limit to the number of tickets sold or purchased by an individual. Ticket sales will run through October 1, ending just prior to the drawing at halftime. Coach Knowles reflects nothing but pride for his players, their sport and their community. “We have the best stadium in the state, with War Memorial Field at Barlow Stadium on Jerry Kramer Way,” he stated. “This place is alive with history, tradition and excitement.” After COVID-19 stalled the foundation’s fundraising efforts in 2020, the efforts of 2021 became especially critical. Even still, the teams remain hopeful in their efforts to regain financial momentum in the upcoming months. 38
“COVID slowed us down for a year, but we came roaring back this spring,” Knowles said. His team lost the opportunity to sell tickets at the annual classic car show Lost in the ‘50s, which was canceled in both 2020 and 2021, but plan to boost fundraising through the summer. They look forward to celebrating with a killer season.

All proceeds from the Taylor and Sons Sandpoint Football Foundation Truck Raffle will benefit the current and future players within the foundation. Community members can make a donation to the Sandpoint Bulldogs online at SPBulldogs.com, with the ability to donate an amount of their choosing and the option to choose a specific player to donate to. Raffle tickets can also be purchased directly through the players at $5 each. All checks can be made payable to the Sandpoint Football Foundation, and every ticket gets the donor closer to a shiny new Chevy Colorado. “It is a humbling and great honor to lead the Sandpoint Football Team this fall,” Knowles stated. That honor will be shared by the supportive community that stays dedicated to cheering them on.

IN FOC NORTHWEST FLAVORS PLENTY OF FOOD AND DRINK TO SAMPLE ALL SUMMER LONG! BY COLIN ANDERSON

ost of us probably have a favorite local restaurant. It’s the one you can always count on for a solid meal, especially if the family can’t agree on what to eat. Many of us also prefer a certain style of wine, be it Cab or Rosé, or the particular hop combination used in the IPA produced at the brewery down the street. While there will always be brand loyalty, the near staggering amount of quality eateries and drinkeries around the region has provided eager customers with a wide range of food and beverages in which to challenge their ever-evolving taste buds. The competition challenges chefs, brewers, and bartenders to utilize their creativity to attract an audience that’s always looking for what’s new, different, or downright tasty. One of the best ways to find these unique offerings is by attending one of the region’s outstanding tasting events. While 2020 wiped out these wonderful festivals last summer, many are back again in 2021, and ready for the sound of clinking glasses and audible yums over a backdrop of live music. It’s Getting Hot Out There Trust the professionals in keeping your home cool this summer

uly 2021 marks two years since Jesse Thompson opened Freedom Air HVAC in Sagle, Idaho. A small locally owned heating, ventilation and air conditioning contractor, Freedom AIR provides both residential and commercial services on all makes and models of heating and cooling equipment, specializing in ductless mini-split systems. Freedom Air not only installs but maintains and troubleshoots issues that arise with their customers’ HVAC systems, they also offer clean air solutions for your home or office, and water heater repair and replacement (including tankless). Service plans are available to maintain your equipment and prevent unnecessary breakdowns. Servicing your equipment also helps to ensure you are getting the best performance possible from your equipment—as well as longevity. “HVAC systems are a large investment and worth taking care of,” affirms Jesse. “Think of it like your car, except it operates a lot more than your car does. You change your oil in your car, right? Dirty filters and coils are a leading cause of premature equipment failure. In some cases, lack of maintenance can even void a manufacturer’s warranty.” Jesse is always happy to answer questions and is willing to talk people through simple repairs when necessary. “Let us know what we can do to help you out, and we would be happy to do our best to meet or exceed your expectations,” he smiles. It was 17 years ago that a friend helped Jesse in securing his first HVAC job. Though the friend would later go on to a new career as a painter, Jesse continued in the field. “I stuck with it because the pay was decent,” he laughs, “but for the most part it was because I liked the work. I love learning new things and challenging myself. You can really surprise yourself when you apply yourself!” Jesse came to the area several years ago to visit a good friend, falling in love with the area. Born and raised in Boise, he watched the exponential growth of the Treasure Valley “ruin” his home. “Growth is good, but it needs to be managed. I don't like seeing locals priced out of housing markets in the area. It makes you sick a little,” he sighs. It was a major life change in 2018 that led Jesse to North Idaho, as he was in search of something new and different. “I had lived in Boise almost all my life until that point and never came further north than Coeur d’Alene,” he recalls. “Who knew what a wonderful little gem was hiding up here the whole time.”

Since opening Freedom Air HVAC in July 2019, Jesse attributes the success of his business first and foremost to God. “I also have a very supportive and wonderful woman who puts up with my stress and nonsense,” he smiles. “She tries her best to help me stay focused and on task.” He credits the support of his friends, as well as the word of mouth from customers—which has been a huge factor, according to Jesse. When it comes to assisting his clients in their HVAC needs, receiving feedback from happy customers who are thankful for the work he’s performed is where he finds most fulfillment. Jesse feels
privileged to be able to serve the people of Bonner County and to be a part of this special place. “The local people are very open and friendly, and it is great to live somewhere where it is a slower pace and people are willing to help each other out,” Jesse shares. “Even strangers will step forward to help in times of need. It is encouraging for me to see people who still care.” And Jesse is just one of those people. If you are in need of a new HVAC system, Clean-air solution or water heater, or have equipment that is in need of repair, Jesse invites you to give him a call today. He’s ready to meet—and exceed—your expectations with his experience and professionalism. Though the month of July, Freedom Air is offering a 15 percent discount on equipment and services on any day that breaks 100 degrees.

NAVIGATING FIRE SEASON Summer forecast: hot and dry
BY COLIN ANDERSON
S
ummer is the best time to get out and enjoy the wonderful hiking, biking and camping spots that the Northwest is famous for. While more and more people are finding the beauty and serenity of these special places, carelessness with fire could lead to devastating consequences. The National Interagency Fire Center is predicting an above average fire season for much of the West with increased awareness for Southeastern Washington, the Cascades, Central Oregon and Northern California. A dry spring combined with a predicted hot and dry summer could see our air quality reduced in the second half of summer, as fires even hundreds of miles away can have a great impact on the region. While many fires are caused by lightning strikes igniting timber or grassland, the majority are in fact caused by humans. According to the United States Forest Service, most years nine out of 10 wildland fires are human caused. Sometimes it’s a blown electrical pole or other cause out of our hands, but as evidenced throughout recent history, carelessness with a campfire,

running engine, fireworks or cigarette can also lead to catastrophe. There are simple precautions to take as to not be the cause of a fire. One of the leading causes of wildland fires is campers not properly extinguishing their campfire. If your fire is lit in a primitive site, be sure you have at least a 10-foot circumference away from any fuels that could be ignited by sparks leaving your fire ring. Keep fires small and only burn clean, dry tinder and never burn garbage that could be lifted away by the wind. If your campsite is in a designated campground, be sure to only light a fire within the fire pit or ring. A common mistake when extinguishing a fire is to just dump a bottle of water on it until the flames are out. While water is a good start, be sure to mix in dirt with a shovel and mix thoroughly. Your fire is extinguished only when you are able to place the palm of your hand on it without needing to pull back. If you are simply going for a day hike, be conscious of where you park your car. A hot engine parked over dry grass can spark a fire, and you could lose your vehicle in the process. The same is true for off-road vehicles. Stay on designated trails, and be conscious of your surroundings. Finally, pay attention to the current fire danger and fire restrictions of the forest you are visiting. If fires are not allowed, do not start one. When conditions are elevated to “High” or “Extreme,” not only are the chances of sparking a fire greater, but the chance for a large-scale fire greatly increases due to the conditions. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather as well. If it’s been hot in your area and a thunderstorm rolls in, it might be time to call it a day. Fires sparked by lighting can fight through rainfall and grow quickly in the right conditions.

A Heart to Serve Bonner County Board of Community Guardian seeks volunteers looking to make a difference in the life of another
T
BY TAYLOR SHILLAM
he dictionary definition of a guardian is a defender, protector, or keeper. In the case of the Bonner County Board of Community Guardian, a guardian looks after another individual who is left alone and unable to care for themselves.
A guardian plays a critical role to the wellbeing of an individual who has become incapable of caring for themselves. Members of the Board are volunteers who become court appointed as a guardian or conservator, an umbrella of protection when no other person, family member or friend is qualified or willing to manage the selected individual’s affairs. “It is very meaningful work,” explained Tami Feyen, chairperson of the Board. “It makes such a big impact on those who we are able to serve.” Individuals qualify for guardianship when they lack the capacity to make or communicate responsible decisions. These individuals have an immense need, as they could be subject to harm due to their inability to provide themselves with the essentials to survive—including food, health care, shelter, safety, clothing, and the effective management of financial affairs.

Established in 1993, the Bonner County Board of Community Guardian and its services have proven to be of great significance within the community. “For the people in our community who have no family and no friends, the people who are willing to step in and support them as strangers take on their care and responsibility as if it’s their own,” Feyen shared. Each guardian visits their ward at their designated living facility at a frequency dependent on the guardian’s schedule and the individual’s needs, typically once or twice per month. Visits are the time designated for the guardian to provide support, guidance, and coordination with their ward’s care facility to ensure their personal, medical and emotional needs are met. Today, there remain a great number of Bonner County individuals in need of that support. The bylaws governing the Board require a minimum of seven Board

members at one time. The Board is currently at that threshold of a minimum and is in a critical need of volunteers with a heart to serve. “The need from our community is so much bigger now,” Feyen shared. “It’s been a challenge to find board members, as our current members are pretty saturated with responsibility.” The board consists of seven to 11 members who undergo an application process and certification before being appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. Each board member is a volunteer with a heart for service and a commitment to the community, and serves without pay. The Board meets monthly to review referrals from hospitals and care facilities throughout the county, assessing the provided information and medical records of the nominated individuals to determine the real need for guardianship.

Now at the minimum threshold of a Board member count, they are seeing requests exceed their resources. The need for volunteers is great, and the role of guardian is unlike any other. “It’s so rewarding, taking on the role when you’re appointed to be responsible for a person’s well-being. You take on that responsibility for them,” Feyen explained. “While we’re not providing any direct care, we’re responsible for making the very best decision for their well-being in every aspect. It’s not a responsibility to be taken lightly.” Most individuals who require guardianship have suffered from dementia, a traumatic brain injury or stroke. Their guardian steps in to ensure the best decisions are made for them throughout the remainder of their life. “They recognize you as someone they trust, and they become more or less like family,” Feyen said. “It is significant work.”
Feyen emphasized that the board acts as an individual’s last resort. They step in as guardians when there is no one else willing to do so.
The Board invites anyone within the community who is looking for an incredibly meaningful way to serve others to explore the idea of becoming a guardian.
“I do my best to contact family members and known acquaintances to ensure the family knows about the need for guardianship and has the opportunity to step forward,” she shared.
The Board is fully supported by the Bonner County Commissioner, with a very small annual budget that covers a bit of advertising and community education. They have a county-appointed attorney and administrative

support. As a very small, unique board, they serve individuals in Bonner County only. Feyen has been with the Bonner County Board of Community Guardian since 2011 and became acting chair of the board shortly after. She wholeheartedly believes in the purpose behind the work they perform. “The person who is most satisfied by this work and finds the most joy in it is someone looking for a very meaningful way to serve, in a way they may have never had the opportunity to serve before,” Feyen stated. The Board has been of great significance in the lives of many. “We exist as a last resort for those who don’t have anyone else to support them.” The Bonner County Board of Community Guardian is currently seeking community members with compassion and the desire to make a difference, to take the service opportunity of a lifetime. SHIN SPLINTS And how to beat them!
By Andrew Mason, PTA, Kauai Therapy & Wellness
I
f you’ve ever had a burning pain in your shins forcing you to cut a run short or take a break from your workout, chances are you have encountered shin splints. Shin splints are painful and can show up at the most inopportune times—affecting runners and other highly active individuals alike. In this article, we will cover what shin splints are, what causes them and what you can do to prevent and treat them. What are shin splints? The term shin splints refers to what is medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome. As this name suggests, the tibia (the long bone on the front of your shin) and its surrounding structures can become stressed or overworked, causing irritation that is typically felt as a burning pain along your shin.
What causes shin splints? Though the pain you feel in your shin may seem sudden, shin splints rarely show up overnight. Shin splints are generally a result of repeated stresses that develop into the pain we are familiar with. These repeated stresses occur when we push our bodies harder or faster than they are accustomed to. Over time our bones and muscles can become overworked and unable to deal with landing impacts or quick directional changes. Here is a list of some of the most common causes of shin splints: • Inadequate warm-up period prior to exercise • Excessive training • Muscular weakness, imbalances or tightness

The mind-body practice of meditation has long been used for physical relaxation and to increase calmness, improve psychological balance, and enhance overall health and well-being. When you realize it's time to "take a breather," don't ignore your body, heart and mind. Find a quiet place (if possible), and focus on your breath while being mindful of your thoughts. Just a few seconds of being mindful while focusing your breathing can have immediate, positive effects to last throughout the day.

Shin splints are generally a result of repeated stresses that develop into the pain we are familiar with. • Poor running technique or form • Training on sloped or uneven surfaces • Unsuitable footwear • Flat feet (also known as fallen arches) What are the best treatment options for shin splints? While the best and easiest way to deal with shin splints is to prevent them in the first place, traditional shin splint treatment involves a period of rest (a few days to a couple weeks) from the aggravating activity and periodic icing for the inflammation. While taking a few weeks off training is extremely frustrating and the last thing you may want to do, it is necessary to allow the overworked tissues time to repair. Unfortunately, however, without proper diagnosis and appropriate exercise modifications, shin splints may reappear as soon as you restart your training, putting you right back where you started. Here are some helpful tips to prevent or get rid of shin splints:
• Stretch your calves and shin muscles • Warm up before you begin your exercise • Strengthen your core and leg muscles • Check your training form • Use a foam roller on your calves and shin muscles How we can help. Though shin splints can be a setback in your training, they are treatable. Our care providers here at Kauai Therapy and Wellness are trained to diagnose and treat the source of shin splints to get you back on your feet as quickly as possible. By treating the root cause through evaluation of muscle strength, imbalances and tension, along with running form, unique foot shape and footwear, we can help you beat the pesky pain keeping you from enjoying your workouts or getting out for a run during these beautiful summer months.

NON-INVASIVE BODY CONTOURING Tired of crunches and squats? New science delivers body sculpting without the gym
BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC
I
f hours at the gym and a restrictive diet have left you with sub-optimal results, you may want to consider EmSculpt Neo, a non-invasive device that delivers results equivalent to a 16-week workout program, all in just four short weeks. EmSculpt Neo launched in fall 2020 and is a next-generation, FDA-cleared device that combines enhanced HIFEM (highintensity electromagnetic field) technology with radiofrequency (RF) energy in the form of heat to burn fat more effectively and build muscle. This results in more fat reduction and muscle growth, with clinical studies showing a 30 percent reduction in fat and 25 percent increase in muscle in the treated area. Below we break down frequently asked questions and all the details on the cuttingedge treatment. What areas can EmSculpt Neo treat? This nonsurgical treatment can tighten, tone and strengthen the large muscle groups of the abdomen and buttocks, as well as smaller muscle groups such as the calved, biceps and triceps. How many EmSculpt Neo sessions are required to see results? Four 30-minute treatments one week apart are recommended. The reduction in fat is permanent if your weight stays within 20 pounds of your treatment weight. A maintenance treatment is recommended every six months to maintain your muscle growth. You will begin to see results after your first treatment and continue to see improvement up to three months after your fourth treatment.

SERVICES INCLUDE: Botox/Dysport | Dermal Fillers Microneedling | Sculptra Aesthetic Skin Care | Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy EmSculpt Neo Body Contouring Kybella | Microblading | Chemical Peels Is there any downtime with EmSculpt Neo? EmSculpt Neo is a non-invasive procedure that requires no recovery time or any pre-treatment preparation. During your treatment, a light tapping motion is done to release the lactic acid from the muscle, which results in less soreness than you would experience after a hard day at the gym.
Who is a good candidate for Emsculpt Neo? Clients with a BMI up to 35—higher than most other nonsurgical body contouring treatment options—are good candidates. It is recommended that you schedule a consultation with your aesthetic provider to assess your goals and whether EmSculpt is right for you.
How much does Emsculpt Neo cost?
Contraindications to EmSculpt Neo include metal or electronic implants in the treatment area, cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, implanted neurostimulators, drug pumps, malignant tumors, epilepsy or hemorrhagic conditions. Results are improved when combined with a healthy lifestyle that includes aerobic exercise and a balanced diet that is limited in refined sugars and processed foods.
The cost of EmSculpt Neo varies from region and practice location. According to Real Self, an online directory for cosmetic procedures and plastic surgery, a series of four treatments averages $3,050.
To learn more about the world’s only FDAapproved fat-reducing and muscle-building treatment, visit BodybyBTL.com/emsculptneo or schedule an appointment with your aesthetic provider.
What does EmSculpt Neo feel like? The treatment feels like an intense workout with a warming sensation in the treated area. You can lay down and relax during the treatment.

SUMMER IN SANDPOINT S A F E T Y T I P S A N D W H E R E T O G O W H E N Y O U N E E D M E D I C A L A S S I S TA N C E By Kristin Carlson, Marketing Specialist, Bonner General Health
O
ur long-awaited summer is upon us. It’s why so many of us live here; the endless adventures that summer in Sandpoint brings. Hiking, biking, swimming, boating, camping, rock-climbing, dining outside and enjoying the spectacular views; the opportunities are endless. But with more activities and more people out and about come more opportunities for accidents. Being mindful of our surroundings and taking extra steps of caution can reduce the risks of an unexpected injury. “Some of the most common preventable injuries we see in the Emergency Department are head injuries—ranging from minor injury to major trauma—from bicycle, motorcycle or ATV/UTV accidents. Wearing a helmet could have made a big difference,” said BGH Emergency Department Nurse Rob McGregor. “My best advice for preventing injury, in addition to wearing a helmet, is to be aware of your surroundings when participating in activities; quickly scan the area for any major hazards that could be avoided. Also, wear proper footwear. We see a lot of injuries from trip and fall due to very poor footwear. Even in the heat of summer, wear sandals with straps rather than flip-flops. Lastly, drink less alcohol and more water with activities. Simple dehydration can lead to simple weakness and falls.” Additional Summer Safety Tips: Water Safety. The American Red Cross recommends the following safety measures around water: Never swim alone; utilize U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vests for young and inexperienced swimmers; always supervise children around water and limit your distractions (yes, that means your phone); in a group setting, always designate one person to be the water supervisor to oversee activity in the water; and in a water emergency, reach or throw an object to the person in trouble—do not jump in.
Where to go? In the event of injury or illness, knowing where to go will make the process of seeking treatment a little smoother. It is essential to choose the right level of care. The Emergency Department is the right choice if you or a family member is experiencing a life-threatening illness or injury. You will want to go to the Emergency Department to treat: difficulty breathing; any symptoms of stroke: face drooping, slurred speech, arm weakness, sudden vision trouble, or sudden trouble understanding simple statements; a major burn; persistent chest pain that radiates to your arm or jaw that may also include sweating, vomiting or shortness of breath; severe head injury; coughing or vomiting blood; severe pain in your chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure. If you are more than 20 weeks along, pregnancy complications include contractions/labor with bleeding, leaking fluid or decreased fetal movement. Children should be brought to the Emergency Department if they are experiencing any of the following symptoms: head injury; significant bone or soft-tissue injuries; high, persistent fever (38.5°C or 100.4°F); persistent vomiting or diarrhea; significant lack of fluid intake (especially in a younger child); substantial changes in the child’s activity level. If an injury is not lifethreatening, or any of the above mentioned, a visit to an Immediate Care Clinic may be appropriate. Immediate Care Clinics can treat: cuts, bruises and minor lacerations; earache, sore throat and fever; minor burns and skin infections; sprains, strains and simple fractures; or upper respiratory infections, bronchitis and sinusitis.
SPF. Protect your skin with sunscreen daily, often reapplying when outdoors. Protective clothing, hats and sunglasses will help prevent sunburn as well.
Whatever your injury or condition may be, there is a conveniently located resource available to get you treated and back on your way to enjoying another Sandpoint summer adventure.
First Aid. Bringing a first aid kit on your outdoor adventures will help reduce the risk of infection and the severity of an injury if an incident occurs. If you are inexperienced, an introductory first aid course may serve you well.
Stay safe. Be cautious. Take comfort knowing care is available for the just in case.
Pedestrian/Bike Safety. Sandpoint is a walking/biking town. We have the signs to prove it! Be sure you, your kids and your friends take extra
60
precautions around town. Use sidewalks and crosswalks where available; plan based on your destination and take the safest route; wait for pedestrian signals at traffic lights; use hand signals and bike lights when necessary.

CREATE AMAZING, HEALTHY HABITS I t ’s a s e a s y a s t h e s e three simple steps!
By Missi Balison
THESE MINI STEPS, TRIGGERS AND DOPAMINE HITS WILL CULMINATE INTO AMAZING, LASTING HEALTHY HABITS!
T
he beauty of summertime is that our schedules can relax a bit! With longer days we can be rejuvenated with more daylight time to do the things we love (hiking, boating, gardening). But, there can be one drawback to this relaxed lifestyle (I see it every fall in the studio): People tend to let their good habits slip a bit. Today I am going to teach you the simple steps that go into creating good habits so you can implement them this summer and not lose ground on bettering your health! Here are the three simple (and scientific) steps to creating a solid new habit! Step 1: Break that habit down into a smaller step. If drinking more water is a habit you want to maintain this summer, try breaking it down into a manageable size. For example, drinking a gallon of water can be a daunting task, but when you break the day into four sections (6 to 9am, 9am to noon, noon to 3pm, 3 to 6pm) and commit to drinking just 32 ounces every three hours, that task becomes more “doable.” Better yet, if you break that down into an hourly goal of 10 to 11 ounces every hour ... this you can do! Step 2: Create a “trigger” for these mini steps. It is key to create a trigger to remind you to do the task. Make sure the trigger is something that happens consistently without fail so there is no opportunity to forget. When your brain connects the good habit to a trigger, it will become an automatic response—and creating a new habit has just become that much easier. Basically, this takes the brain work out of the equation and serves as an automatic reminder. If you have a mini goal to drink 10 ounces of water every hour, simply set an alarm on your
62
| SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL
phone to remind you it’s time to take a swig (or 10). Other trigger examples can include: 10 pushups before bed (you go to bed every day); squats every time you brush your teeth; posture check every time your phone rings or a text comes in (whatever happens often throughout your day). Step 3: Reward yourself! This part is actually the most important step of creating a new habit—so do not skip it! Every time you perform the mini step, I want you to “celebrate” your accomplishment with a little reward (not ice cream sundaes). Give yourself a fist bump, a happy dance, and air high five … whatever makes you feel happy! Something magical happens when you reward yourself for completing the habit. The magic is called dopamine! Dopamine is a powerful brain chemical that is produced when you do something that is exciting. Your brain loves dopamine and will want to do that “thing” again and again. Celebrating the completion of the mini step will make your brain excited for that next fist bump when your alarm goes off and you chug down that water. Soon these mini steps, triggers and dopamine hits will culminate into amazing, lasting healthy habits! Apply these steps to anything that you are either trying to create or a habit that you want to make sure you don’t slip up on throughout the dog days of summer. If you want to dive in a little deeper, some of my favorite books about habits are: Atomic Habits by James Clear, Tiny Habits by BJ Fogg, The 5-Second Rule by Mel Robbins. Missi Balison, owner of Missi Balison Fitness, is a personal trainer, exercise physiologist and Certified Precision Nutrition coach.

ACID REFLUX AND GERD HOW TOO LITTLE STOMACH ACID, INSTEAD OF TOO MUCH, CAN LEAD TO DISCOMFORT
BY SCOTT PORTER, SANDPOINT SUPER DRUG
W
hen having heartburn, we often think the pain is caused by too much stomach acid. That unpleasant burning feeling in our throat is the telltale sign.
The more acid in your stomach, the more likely it is to travel up into your throat. Acid in your throat is not a good thing. You do not have the mucosal barrier that protects underlying tissue there; that is only in your stomach. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is where tumors in the pancreas or small intestine release an overabundance of a hormone called gastrin. This directs the body to release more stomach acid. But this is exceedingly rare. Acid will eat through your esophagus and erode the enamel on your teeth. That is why there is a valve right before the stomach that closes after swallowing to keep things from backwashing and causing problems like this. If that valve isn’t tightly closed, or the back pressure from gas in your stomach is too great, fluids containing acid will force their way past this value up into your throat. If you get a sour taste after burping, then you may be tasting acid. Pregnancy and restricted clothing can cause increased back pressure. You could also have too much stomach acid in your stomach if you are coming off using H2 blockers designed to decrease stomach acid. Some think this may also happen with PPIs, like omeprazole. Some acid reflux is considered normal, as it typically happens to nearly everyone. But having this more than a couple times a week over a period of a few weeks should be of concern. GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, can result from chronic reflux. You may feel pain in your chest, a dry cough, a tickle in your throat like something is stuck, or have trouble swallowing. A blockage between your stomach and small intestine could cause too much stomach acid. Surprisingly though, one cause of acid reflux is actually too little stomach acid. Just the opposite of what we’d think. When acid is low, microbes can grow in abundance. And as bacteria digest the food that we eat, they produce gas. More bacteria, more gas. One bacteria, Heliobacter pylori, actually produces an enzyme that makes stomach acid less acidic. This creates a more hospitable environment for them to proliferate and irritate the lining of our stomach. Your diet can play a major role in having, or not having, acid reflux. Too many carbohydrates and sugars will overfeed bacteria and lead to more gas. This in turn leads to more pressure in your stomach and belching. The fermentation process is enhanced by products made from flour and sugar. Even sweet fruits, like bananas and oranges, and gluten-free flours can make things worse. Sugary drinks, like wine and milk, definitely overfeed microbes. If you want to reduce your reflux, then don’t overfeed your gut bacteria. Also consider increasing your stomach acid instead of lowering it. Adequate stomach acid and enzymes will help keep bacteria at a balanced level. Making sure your food does not sit in your stomach too long is important, so smaller and less fatty meals help. I like to take a clinical strength daily probiotic and use digestive enzymes to keep things moving along. Scott Porter, a functional medicine pharmacist, is the director of the Center for Functional Medicine & Nutrition at Sandpoint Super Drug.

KEEPING OUR WATERWAYS
CLEAN SMALL ACTIONS SEE BIG SOLUTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO OUR WATERWAYS BY RACHEL KELLY
W
e live on the beach. Sand, water, sunbathing, picnics and boating ... we’ve got it all. Every summer, or sometimes all year round, there’s a rush to the waterways. The boats, jet skis and kayaks all come out to play. Which is something wonderful! Living where we live, it’s a privilege. As locals, we get to enjoy the beauty of living in the pristine Inland Northwest all year. It’s a well-kept secret (or is it?) that we live in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. But with the pristine waters, the open space and the snow-capped mountain ranges comes a certain weight of responsibility. Sometimes even frustration.
the threats and general disappointment, there’s actually a lot of ideas. Should we up the ante on punishments for litter? But then, who would enforce it? Maybe there should be a special litter police. Or, maybe we can be more proactive in speaking out when we see someone littering. But then ... there are just so many people. Can we really be in every park, by every waterway, to point our fingers at the litter bugs? Some people are just all for giving up. It’s destroyed, might as well stop trying! Ultimately, all this negativity doesn’t bring about solutions. Finger-pointing feels good, but it doesn't pick up trash. “If you love something, you take care of it,” says Weston.
“Where there’s people, there’s trash,” says Weston Cedarblom of Coeur D’Love, a conservation organization founded to help keep trash out of our waters. That’s the reality of living by major waterways: It’s the place to be. Locals and visitors alike come to appreciate the beauty. However, during the rush, often it’s the locals who are stuck with the backend of the pollution. It’s no wonder that we rate preservation to be of high importance around here. Pollution always ends up in the water, and here with our rivers, lakes and oceans, we can see it. It’s a shame to see something so lovely go to waste.
When it comes to the trash that often comes along with the summer season, the solution is simple. What you take in you pack out! While you’re at it, pick up a little extra. When it comes to the health of our towns, cities and waterways, there’s no time to play the blame game. We’re all in this together for the sake of what’s ours.
Comments in response to seeing trash in our waterways on social media include lots of negativity (go figure). In between

And that’s just it, isn’t it? This place is ours. At the end of the day, we love where we live. It’s up to us to take care of it, a euphemism that’s easier said than done. It might seem complicated, but Weston boils it down to two common commodities: time and money. If you don’t have money, then give your time. And if you don’t have time, give your

money. There are plenty of products out there whose profits go toward conservation. Coeur D’Love is just one such organization that sells products, as well as actively encouraging community participation. Giving one of two basic commodities is simple enough—and something that most people can get behind. The decisions that we make today don’t just encompass us. Today’s pollution is greater than our generation. Keeping our waterways clear ensures clean drinking water, fishing and recreation for future generations. Water is life. Without it, where would we be? To clean it up we need a game plan. This is why research-backed information to support keeping our watershed pure is so important. Research confirms a solid direction for preservation efforts, fuels advocacy, and highlights specific opportunities for community involvement. Nonprofits like the Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper provide that research, and are, not surprisingly, greatly reliant on their volunteers. Other city organizations, like the Tacoma Center for Urban Waters, also rely heavily on community support to keep our waterways clean. Just as water is connected, and knows no boundaries, so must our connections reach across barriers to ensure its preservation. The connection between waterways is also illustrative of its greater connection to all life. Water makes up 70 percent of the Earth’s surface for good reason; through it we are all connected. In fact, we can often determine the general health of our waterways by keeping tabs on the local wildlife. The suffering of wildlife is often a precursor to what we have to look forward to. If the wildlife is healthy, we have a future of health to look forward to, and vice versa. In the Puget Sound, salmon has steadily been declining at an ever-increasing rate. Salmon is a keystone species, which is another way of saying that it is an essential part of our ecosystem. All manner of life depends on the health of the Coho Salmon. Orca, birds of prey, bears and seals eat salmon. In turn, a vast number of other species suffer if those predators decline. And on and on and so forth. Without salmon, the whole of the land, and all the species living in it, die or suffer. This is why the decline of salmon is so alarming. Researchers from the Center for Urban Waters, the University of Washington, and the Washington State

University published in 2020’s Science magazine an unlikely culprit for the death of our salmon: car tires. Vehicle tires shed tiny particles of rubber, which get washed down the storm drains in the rain. Specifically, chemicals within the “dust” from the tires are causing harm to our waterways. These chemicals are, understandably, more present in major urban areas with more roadways. It’s the rubber and the chemicals from the tires that ultimately kill the coho salmon. Since many of Washington’s largest cities are on waterways, understanding the ins and outs of stormwater pollution is especially important. This ground-breaking research was only just published in 2020, but the idea of preventing pollution through the protection of our drains is not. “Prevention of stormwater pollution applies equally to all cities, regardless of whether they have a separated sewer and storm water system,” says Sarah Norber, an environmental specialist for the Center for Urban Waters. It’s not widely known that car tires specifically are a key part in stormwater pollution, but it is widely known that cars are major pollutants. In light of new and old research, using public forms of transport can go a long way in preserving our waterways. Other ways to preserve our waterways include riding bikes, fixing car leaks, using commercial car washes, limiting the use of pesticides and practicing the proper disposal of chemicals. All roads lead to water, and all drains eventually end up in our oceans. When we analyze the challenges facing our waterways, the problem can seem too overwhelming to solve. It’s a difficult prospect to take on the responsibility for our actions, as well as those of others. Anger takes precedence over that of service. The temptation to throw in the towel and move on is understandable. But we can find encouragement in our successes. What we do does matter, and what we’re doing together will work. Thea Foss Waterway is just one such example. Located in Tacoma, Washington, the once thriving Thea Foss Waterway was characterized in the 1980s by oil sheen, tar deposits and dilapidated buildings. The people and wildlife in the area were laboring under the consequences of over a century of environmentally insensitive practices. There was even a resurgence of the Black Plague in the area in the late 1970s. Though that particular example is interesting, it may be partially unrelated. Regardless, it does highlight just how bad things had gotten. So bad that in 1983, the Environmental Protection Agency identified the waterway to be a part of the larger Commencement Bay Superfund site. This means that Thea Foss Waterway was one of the most polluted places in the nation. The kind of contamination that Tacoma, and Washington as a whole, was tasked with cleaning up was staggering. As a major waterway connected to the ocean, this pollution was especially distressing. What’s more, the pollution was generational. Having spanned over a century, it seemed like things would continue to go along as they always had. If it were not for a deep respect and longing

for something better, things would have gone along as they always had. However, in 1994, the city came together to aggressively clean up the waterway. This involved hundreds of soil samples to identify exactly where the contamination was coming from and resulted in the addition of several new shoreline habitats. The city, businesses, grantees and community members from all over gave their time and money, a total of $105 million in funds. Keeping the storm water drains clear of contaminants was an especially important community effort that required very little money or time, and yet has resulted in big positive outcomes. Over a decade ago, in 2006, the cleanup was completed. It is the reason that locals can play, live and work safely by the waterway today. Wildlife to the once desolate area has returned. Since 2006, efforts have been focused on capping off other sources of pollution and keeping the waterway clean. It has absolutely paid off. Later this year, the Environmental Protection Agency plans to remove the waterway from its list of Superfund sites. It’s an understatement to say that the city is heaving a collective sigh of relief. The people, and the land, are at rest. 72

A little bit goes a long way when we’re talking about the whole of our community. It’s true that one person can’t fix the larger problem of pollution, but a lot of us can. The truth is that we’re everyday people, with everyday goals. We just want the opportunity to jump in the water when it’s hot, raise our kids someplace where they can enjoy the outdoors, and grow old in peace. Big projects take big people, who
have big connections, with big organizations, and big pockets. But those organizations, our home, is made up of us. Nothing will move, and nothing can change, if we’re not emboldened to do so. Taking responsibility for what we put down the drain is just one example of a small everyday act that makes significant changes to wildlife, neighborhoods, and the health of thousands of people.
We just want the opportunity to jump in the water when it’s hot, raise our kids someplace where they can enjoy the outdoors, and grow old in peace.
As a whole, we are individuals with limited means. Our acts of heroism are confined to the every day. The little acts, like picking up trash that we didn’t throw, or taking the bus, are acts of significance. The pride that we take in our waterways impacts the lives of those who live and breathe in our environment. The way that you personally approach the world affects the larger picture. When it comes to water, our decisions flow out to bigger and bigger places. The overall problem may seem overwhelming, but the solution is straightforward. If you see it, pick it up. If you drink it, keep it clean. It’s a mindset that, if it catches on, makes a big difference. But, it starts with you. It starts with us. When it comes to our waterways, we’re all connected.

Q&A
with Dale Hopkins
I N TE RI M FI RE CHI E F, SELKIR K FIR E R ESC UE AN D EM S by JILLIAN CHANDLER
D
ale Hopkins grew up in the Sandpoint area, graduating from Sandpoint High School in 1980. His family here goes back generations, to his great grandparents. Work would take Hopkins to Rathdrum, where he raised his children. He eventually returned to the Sandpoint area around 15 years ago, and today, serves as interim fire chief of Selkirk Fire Rescue and EMS, which collectively provides service to the City of Sandpoint, the Sagle and Westside Fire Districts; separate agencies working together under a joint powers agreement.
A. I began volunteering as a fireman in 1985 and doing it professionally for 20 years now. I took over the fire chief ’s position for Westside Fire in Dover in 2012. When Westside Fire District joined with Sandpoint and the Sagle Fire District as part of the Selkirk Fire Joint Powers Agreement in 2016, I became the assistant chief. When the fire chief retired in the fall of 2019, I was appointed the interim fire chief and have been filling dual roles while a study was conducted of our system. We are currently undergoing some recommended restructuring of our organization, which is very timey as I am preparing to retire this summer.
Q. What inspired you to pursue this line of work?
Q. Many people fail to realize all that firefighters are required to do in their line of work? Besides “putting out fires,” what emergencies/ responsibilities does Selkirk Fire Rescue and EMS deal with on a daily basis?
A. I have always felt a need to offer a hand or assist anyone who needed it. Coming to the aid of a person experiencing the worst day of their life and doing what you can to make it better is a calling that you cannot ignore. When the Rathdrum Volunteer Fire District asked me to help, I couldn’t say no, and it eventually evolved into a career change. Q. How long have you been a firefighter? Interim fire chief?
76
SANDPOINT LIVING LIVING LOCAL LOCAL | SANDPOINT
A. No two days are alike, and while we do put out fires, firefighters spend most of their time doing many other things beside fighting fire. A modern firefighter responds to all hazards and is really more of an “all hazards mitigation technician.” Whether it be a flood, fire, hazardous materials release, building collapse, crash, wreck, or collapse, EMS, or a

technical rescue incident, if you call, we will go. The fire department also conducts code enforcement and safety inspections to businesses along with preplanning as part of a safety and fire prevention program. Continual training is a must to stay proficient with our skills, and then there is always the equipment checks and maintenance that needs to be accomplished as well. Q. What do you find most rewarding about your role as fire chief? A. I have really enjoyed working with the members of our team and helping Selkirk evolve from a newly organized group of three fire service organizations working together into a much more unified and efficient group that I believe will provide quality and efficient emergency services for years to come. Q. When you’re not working, how might those in the community find you spending your time? A. I am not sure what not working really means. If I am not working on fire department business, my wife and spend our time working around the property we have picking off the endless list of chores that exist. I purchased the property I grew up on from my parents, and I we all seem to stay busy enough reinvigorating the homestead. If we ever have any spare time, I would like to knock the dust off the boat and do some kokanee fishing or trip over some rocks on the upper Pack. Q. What do you love most about being able to serve the people of Sandpoint and the community as a whole? A. I think what I really like about working here is the sense of community. Some people might think that’s cliché, but I really feel that. For me this is home. It’s where my family roots run deep, and it's where I have a sense of belonging. It’s hard to put into words, but for me there is a deeper level of personal satisfaction serving in your own community than there is working somewhere else.

WHAT TREATMENT IS RIGHT FOR ME? The art of a consultation

hen it comes to aging gracefully, there are so many product and treatment options available that it can become overwhelming. Between skin care, in-office treatments, and even surgery, it can be difficult to know where to start. Consulting with an aesthetic provider or plastic surgeon is an excellent way to learn from the professionals which treatments and products are best for helping you reach your goals. Consultations are generally complimentary or involve a small fee that is applied to your treatment, should you choose to go through with one. Below are some tips to ensure your consultation is successful and allows you to make an informed decision on selecting a provider.

Make a list of your priorities. Often aesthetic goals must be accomplished over several visits to ensure natural-looking results and a safe treatment. Prior to your consultation, make a list of the areas you would like to address and prioritize their importance. For instance, perhaps you would like to remove age spots/ hyperpigmentation and address the lines in your forehead but tightening the skin on your neck is your biggest concern. Together, you and your provider can develop a treatment plan that takes into consideration your areas of greatest concern, healing time and budget to optimize your outcome. What are your credentials? The first question you should ask is, “What are your credentials?” If considering plastic surgery,
Radiofrequency | Laser Hair Removal it is important that your provider is certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In most states, a general surgeon can legally perform plastic surgery, but they lack the rigorous training and credentialing that comes with being a certified plastic surgeon. If considering less-invasive aesthetic treatments, such as Botox or dermal fillers, ask what degree the provider holds, where they have trained and how much experience they have. While complications are rare, it is imperative that you are in the hands of a trained medical professional that can manage complications and keep you safe. Can I see your work? Ask to see before and after photos of the

provider’s work. This is important, as it allows you to visualize realistic expectations as well as see if the provider’s work is in line with your desired outcome. Considering a tummy tuck or breast augmentation? While looking at before and after photos, find similar body shapes and sizes to your own to gauge what is a realistic outcome and whether you are happy with the result. The same can be said for less-invasive treatments, like Botox and lip filler. A consultation is an opportunity for you to interview potential providers to find one who is a good fit for you. Do not be afraid to ask questions and ensure that you are on the same page. When making alterations to your appearance it is important that you are comfortable with your provider and their treatment plan for you.

Founded in January 2005 and inspired by the tsunami that had devastated Sri Lanka, the organization started as Community Focused Disaster Response (CFDR). After completing a long list of service projects to support Sri Lanka, CDFR shifted their focus in 2007 to meeting the needs of combat veterans. Their first retreat, Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, soon came to life, designed to help ease combat-related stress. Since then, the title of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon has remained to encompass the variety of retreats the organization now offers. VCR’s four-day combat veteran retreats are founded on proven methods that inspire healing. They offer shared challenges through activities like ropes courses, whitewater rafting, archery and boating, along with the opportunity to connect with peer mentors and trauma clinicians to regain confidence, companionship and trust. VCR also offers single-day retreats, whitewater rafting trips, and annual ski days, supported by local partnerships with local ski mountains. Every retreat experience provided through Veterans Community Response is designed to encourage natural healing using the outdoors and genuine human connection. To connect with the Veteran Community Response, located in the Veradale area, visit VetComRes.org. Northwest Golfers for Warriors Home to Dan Kleckner’s Golf Classic, Spokane’s Northwest Golfers for Warriors is a nonprofit organization using an annual golf tournament to raise funds in support of the local veteran community. Over the past 10 years, they have donated over half a million dollars in support of local veterans, their families, and the veteran-supportive organizations they partner with. Dan Kleckner’s Golf Classic takes place at Spokane’s Downriver Golf Course and involves either single or multi-player games, plus a golf cart service and banquet meal at Northern Quest Resort and Casino. The annual event serves as an enjoyable means for golfers of the Northwest to give back to veterans, with 100 percent of the proceeds staying local. This year’s golf tournament takes place Saturday, August 14, with online registration now available at NorthwestGolfersforWarriors.org. Many of the veterans who have fought for our freedoms don’t stop fighting after they return home. The organizations that honor and serve our veterans recognize the weight of their service, and aim to give back through values rooted in community and inclusion. On this month’s holiday and beyond, veterans can be celebrated through these local organizations offering opportunities and support for those who have given so much in the name of freedom.

PUBLIC RECOGNITION. Our service men and women give a lot of themselves, and often see the ugliest sides of our communities. They do this so that we can flourish in our everyday lives. So as you see them go about their everyday life, which often involves many late nights, consider taking a moment to acknowledge all that they do. Reminding them that what they do and what they’ve done is worthwhile, by simply pausing in whatever you’re doing to say, “Thank you.” Reminding them that they are seen.

ACTS OF KINDNESS. They may not have literal groceries that they need help with, but the point is that those who serve in our communities have regular chores and lives that they have to attend to. Often it’s those regular everyday needs that suffer when they take time to help with the more pressing or urgent needs within our community. Because of their often pressing schedules, they may struggle with taking the time to sit down with their families. Or, they may not have had a chance to enjoy a solid meal. Whatever it is, it’s the little things that count. If you personally know someone who does or has served, consider stepping in to help with something that they haven’t had the time to do themselves. Buy them a healthy lunch, step in to make them a solid meal, or help their families with house maintenance.

3 4 5 LENDING AN EAR.
Good friends are like a healing salve, especially when dealing with a lot of stress. Service men and women often spend a lot of time listening to others, and so it is nice if someone is interested in hearing how they are. Whether that means taking a moment to have a chat with the police officer on their late-night shift, or asking your regular doctor about their day. If you work in a clerical or in a therapeutic capacity, your advice and support may be especially helpful. We all need to be heard and seen, even the strongest of us.
TICKETS TO THE OUTDOORS. Being out in nature is known to have a rejuvenating and curative effect, especially here in the Northwest. This year consider supporting them as they get some time out of doors, whether that means lending them your kayak or buying their ticket to a mud run. If you teach yoga, consider offering your services for free to your local firehouse. Buying gift cards for relaxing physical activity, or simply including them in non-work based community activities, goes a long way.
FINDING SOMETHING THEY’VE MISSED.
Often, those who serve put aside things they love to do for what needs to be done. They are often on call, which means that they often miss out. As you think of ways to show your appreciation, think of something that they might have missed out on this year. As sports venues and events open up all over the state, consider buying them a ticket to see a comedian or hear a musician. Perhaps all that they’ve missed this year is time to engage in their favorite hobby. For those who serve, there’s always something.
SURPRISE THEM WITH A NOTE.
90
As summer is here, and school is out, get the kids involved! Have your 3-year-old draw or paint a picture, while the older kids draft notes filled with words of encouragement and thankfulness to those first responders Throw a line in from the boat or shore, and enjoy the rush when you get that first bite orin our community. Have them help bake up a batch of goodies (or buy land the big one. If you’re looking for a true adventure, sign on for a fishing charter or flysome from your favorite local bakery) , package them up nicely with the fishing class—there are a wide variety of options ranging from multi-day trips to scenic boatnotes and pictures attached, and drop them off at your local firehouse or tours into remote rivers or lakes. It’s a great opportunity to learn something new and havepolice station. This simple, thoughtful gesture is sure to brighten their day an experience you’ll never forget. If you are headed out this summer to throw in a line, don’tand remind them of the important role they play in our community— forget fishing rules and license requirements change depending on where you are, so makeand that they are appreciated. sure you’re licensed and ready to go.

JAMAICA! Safely navigating a trip to the Caribbean By Marguerite Cleveland
V
enturing out on an international trip can be a bit intimidating amid the continuing pandemic, with testing requirements and each destination with its own rules. Once I received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and waited the requisite two weeks, I was ready to travel. I chose Jamaica for this trip due to their Controlled Entry Program Protocols. For tourists, the Government of Jamaica has established resilient corridors. You choose an approved accommodation within the corridor and then you can visit COVID-19 approved protocol-compliant attractions within the “Corridor.” There is an extensive set of measures to ensure health safety that approved accommodations and attractions have all received training on. These are a strictly ensured set of protocols and standards. The most important thing to know as a visitor is you must remain in the Resilient Corridor during your stay at your designated accommodation. You may leave your resort to visit any tourist attraction that is certified by the Jamaica Tourist Board to be a COVID-19 Resilient licensed tourist attraction. Pre-travel Prior to your travels, get familiar with the travel requirements at the official Visit Jamaica website. When I traveled in May, seven days prior to travel you are required to fill out an online travel authorization form, which is instantly approved, and you must print and bring it with you

A MORE ISOLATED RESORT. WHEN SELECTING A PLACE TO STAY, MAKE SURE YOUR RESORT OFFERS PLENTY OF AMENITIES—SINCE YOU WILL BE SPENDING MOST OF YOUR TIME ON THE RESORT.
to Jamaica. You must have travel insurance which covers medical expenses. Some resorts include this coverage. You must also have a COVID-19 test done no earlier than 72 hours prior to your flight. There is a calculator on their website to determine when you can take it. It is important to check back frequently as requirements do change. Currently a negative COVID-19 test is required to return to the United States. When making your travel arrangements, plan how you will get this test. Many resorts offer COVID-19 tests onsite. Insider Tips: Book Club Mobay. This service has a representative who will greet you at the gate when you arrive in Jamaica and whisk you through expedited lines through security. Well worth the expense, especially if multiple planes arrive. You can also book it for departure, in which you’ll have access to a lounge with food and beverages while waiting for your plane to depart. Travel I found the best way to maximize your time in Jamaica is to take a red-eye flight from Seattle arriving at an East Coast hub city such as Atlanta or Miami, and then get on the first flight to Jamaica. With all-inclusive resorts, you pay the same rate whether you arrive in the morning or late in the evening. It is better to arrive early so you can enjoy all the meals and activities you paid for. For my trip we splurged on First Class and felt it was well worth it—especially as on both legs of our trip the plane was fully booked. Masks are still required in airports and on the airplane. Upon arrival in Jamaica, we were met by the Club Mobay representative. Your temperature will be taken at the first screening point. The Club Mobay representative escorts you through the whole process, even helping with your luggage. Once through security, she escorted us to the Sandals Lounge. You also have the option to go to the Club Mobay arrival lounge to wait for transportation to the resort you are staying at. 94

The Specifics Sandals South Coast - Sandals.com/south-coast Travel Requirements for Jamaica - VisitJamaica.com/travelauthorization Club Mobay - VIPAttractions.com/mobay-info
Sandals South Coast I chose Sandals South Coast for our visit because it is located near a nature preserve and is the only hotel on the beach in this area. It is about a 90-minute drive from Montego Bay but well worth the long drive. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it felt safer to be at a more isolated resort. When selecting a place to stay, make sure your resort offers plenty of amenities— since you will be spending most of your time on the resort. I was familiar with the Sandals Brand, having stayed at other properties before. When they say all-inclusive, it really is! There are nine restaurants, multiple bars, and lots of great activities and a worldclass spa. There’s even scuba diving! The only thing you spend money on is shopping, spa treatments and any of the resort excursions. To make the most of a Sandals’ vacation, spend time on the website and review everything that is included. There are 21 different types of rooms at Sandals South Coast within three categories: Luxury, Club and Butler. All categories have access to all the resort has to offer, but some do have more perks. We opted for the new “South Seas Swim-up Rondoval Butler Suite with Private Pool Sanctuary” and then fulfilled a bucket list item for me by staying in an “Over the Water Butler Honeymoon Bungalow” for one night. These stay fully booked, and we lucked out with one night being available. Our Rondoval suite was so luxurious. These round cottages sit amidst secluded lush gardens surrounded by a river pool. The deck also had a private plunge pool with a waterfall that was so relaxing. It was so nice when staying on a large resort to have this quiet space to retreat to. This trip truly was a wonderful escape from all that 2020 threw at us. The tranquil ocean breezes, blue green Caribbean waters and white sandy beaches had my husband and I relaxed in no time. One of the things I love about the Sandals brand is the staff. They are warm and welcoming, providing incredible service. The butler experience was worth the extra expense. From the reserved lounge chairs by the pool or beach with coolers of beverages to being picked up each night and escorted to dinner, I loved being spoiled. I felt very safe with the health and safety protocols at Sandals. The company provides COVID-19 tests a few days prior to your departure as well as the mandatory travel insurance. Everything was spotlessly clean, the staff all wore masks, and the use of hand sanitizer was required when entering public spaces. 96

The Over the Water Bungalow Wow! What an incredible experience. This luxury retreat sits at the far end of the resort with a private deck overlooking the sea. The sunset views were stunning. Once we checked into this room we didn’t leave until the next morning! The enhanced room service for these exclusive suites even had filet mignon on it. The deck was fully equipped with loungers, an outdoor shower and bathtub, as well as a box full of snorkel gear and lifejackets. Each bungalow also has a beach cabana. We booked a candlelight dinner, which we had served on the deck while watching the sunset. So romantic and a great way to end our Jamaica getaway to Sandals South Coast. Insider Tips: There are official Facebook groups for each Sandals resort, and it is a wealth of information from guests who have stayed at the resorts, with Sandals providing moderators to ensure the information is correct. It had been almost 10 years since my last visit to the Caribbean, and I had forgotten how truly relaxing a beach vacation is. It was the perfect antidote to 2020. We booked a visit to Sandals in Barbados for next year. If you reserve at the resort, you receive a 10 to 12 percent discount on your next visit. Sandals also offers military and first responders a 10 percent discount, which can be combined with other discounts.

SAVE THE MARKET

there is no place like
HOPE, IDAHO DAVIS MARKET AND CAFÉ , IN HOPE, IDAHO, HAS BEEN A PART OF THE COMMUNITY SINCE 2018, OPERATING OUT OF A HISTORIC BUILDING THAT HAS BEEN SERVING THE COMMUNITY FOR MORE THAN 100 YEARS. THEIR STORE OFFERS GROCERIES, A RESTAURANT AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, A COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE. Before beginning the leasehold improvements to fix up the old building, the Davis family entered into a lease-to-own purchase agreement with the current owner. In 2020, as they were set to purchase, the pandemic hit—and their commercial funding fell through before closing. They thought they received an extension, but when they proceeded this year to finalize the purchase, it turns out that this is not the case, and the original purchase price is no longer on the table. Now, with only two months of warning, unless someone else purchases the property and extends the lease, the market and café will be evicted in August. As a landmark historic building and a community hub, the Davis family has come up with an idea. They do not need to own the property to be able to run the store, so why not create a community cooperative? Then the building and historic cabins are preserved, and community members become the caretakers, preserving the history and legacy of this place well beyond one family at one point in time. The Davis Family is pursuing two options: Option 1. The community cooperative purchases just the building, cabins and property, and they lease out the building to the market. In this scenario, they are investing in real estate only and getting passive income on rents. Option 2. The community cooperative buys the building, cabins, property AND the store, and the entire business becomes a community-owned cooperative. This place is special, and there is very little time to waste to save it. The Davis family is prepared to move on, grateful for a wonderful experience; but the store and its impact on the community is something so much bigger than one family, and it deserves every effort to preserve it. The community can rally and own a piece of history—together. In addition to community investors joining the co-op, the Davis family will also need help from real estate and legal experts. For more information, You are asked to please reach out via email to general@davisgroceryinhope.com or follow updates on their website, DavisGroceryinHope.com.
