REAL Market Update - Brought to you by Jackie Suarez, Associate Broker What is the current real estate market climate in North Idaho? Our market continues to favor Sellers. Good news for Buyers – Summer is approaching, and more properties are entering the market, especially waterfront. Mortgage lenders are still offering extremely low rates. Three tips for navigating this market: 1. Engage the help of a local agent and full-time professionals who are experts in the market you are entering. Municipal regulations, surroundings, topography, utilities, and lending requirements may pose challenges and affect access, use and value. 2. Sellers, you currently have the advantage of high demand and relatively low supply. Devise a strategy for timing your sale, price your home or land accordingly and know your next step. 3. Buyers, be ready. Cash offers tend to take priority in this market. Approach your search with proof of your purchasing ability and keep an open mind to a property’s long-term potential. Is now a good time to buy or sell? I always say when the time is right for you, the time is right. One thing is certain - our market is constantly changing. What is important to me remains the same. God, Family and Relationships.

WHAT TREATMENT IS RIGHT FOR ME? The art of a consultation
BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC
W
hen it comes to aging gracefully, there are so many product and treatment options available that it can become overwhelming. Between skin care, in-office treatments, and even surgery, it can be difficult to know where to start. Consulting with an aesthetic provider or plastic surgeon is an excellent way to learn from the professionals which treatments and products are best for helping you reach your goals. Consultations are generally complimentary or involve a small fee that is applied to your treatment, should you choose to go through with one. Below are some tips to ensure your consultation is successful and allows you to make an informed decision on selecting a provider.
SERVICES INCLUDE: Botox/Dysport | Dermal Fillers Microneedling | Sculptra Aesthetic Skin Care | Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy EmSculpt Neo Body Contouring Kybella | Microblading | Chemical Peels Exosomes Stem Cell Therapy Morpheus-8 Microneedling with
Make a list of your priorities. Often aesthetic goals must be accomplished over several visits to ensure natural-looking results and a safe treatment. Prior to your consultation, make a list of the areas you would like to address and prioritize their importance. For instance, perhaps you would like to remove age spots/ hyperpigmentation and address the lines in your forehead but tightening the skin on your neck is your biggest concern. Together, you and your provider can develop a treatment plan that takes into consideration your areas of greatest concern, healing time and budget to optimize your outcome. What are your credentials? The first question you should ask is, “What are your credentials?” If considering plastic surgery,
Radiofrequency | Laser Hair Removal it is important that your provider is certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In most states, a general surgeon can legally perform plastic surgery, but they lack the rigorous training and credentialing that comes with being a certified plastic surgeon. If considering less-invasive aesthetic treatments, such as Botox or dermal fillers, ask what degree the provider holds, where they have trained and how much experience they have. While complications are rare, it is imperative that you are in the hands of a trained medical professional that can manage complications and keep you safe. Can I see your work? Ask to see before and after photos of the

provider’s work. This is important, as it allows you to visualize realistic expectations as well as see if the provider’s work is in line with your desired outcome. Considering a tummy tuck or breast augmentation? While looking at before and after photos, find similar body shapes and sizes to your own to gauge what is a realistic outcome and whether you are happy with the result. The same can be said for less-invasive treatments, like Botox and lip filler. A consultation is an opportunity for you to interview potential providers to find one who is a good fit for you. Do not be afraid to ask questions and ensure that you are on the same page. When making alterations to your appearance it is important that you are comfortable with your provider and their treatment plan for you.

HONORING AND CELEBRATING THAT IMPORTANT MAN IN OUR LIVES:

S
ummer has arrived, and outdoor opportunities abound; whether it’s a round of golf at your favorite course or getting out on the water for a day of boating, now is the time to make it happen. This month also marks Father’s Day (June 20), that one day a year set aside to honor and celebrate our fathers, and those men in our lives who have been our unwavering father figures.

“Father” isn’t just a name or a title, but a role; a figurehead of the family. He is a man who is not just present but engaged in the life of his family. Now more than ever, we need men to step up and be leaders in the home. It is his duty to pass on values and lessons to his children, while helping relieve the everyday pressures most modern-day women and mothers are faced with. Men are severely needed, and it is imperative that their voices be heard and that they make every effort in making a difference in the lives of the people who look up to them— especially their children. There is a lot of pressure put on fathers these days to be successful; to give back to their church and community; to juggle the
pressures of work (many working more than “full time” just to make ends meet) while managing sports activities and social engagements; to raise independent, strong, kind children; to have life all figured out and being, or at least appearing, “put together.” It is nearly impossible, yet, every day, men are rising up to one of the greatest challenges and lifelong commitments, though most rewarding—that of fatherhood. Thank you to those men who sacrifice for the betterment of their families, selflessly committed to raising the next generation of men and women, whose hands our future lies. This Father’s Day, reflect on the meaning of this day while celebrating those strong, hard-working, determined, loving men who are always ready and willing to take the wheel and help lead us to a brighter future. Happy Father’s Day to those not only with us but who have passed on, their legacy living on through their children and grandchildren. Steve Russo Executive Director | steve@like-media.com

Come on Baby Light My Fire
WAYS TO WARM UP THE OUTDOORS By Deann Hammer, Interior Designer
T
he Inland Northwest has an abundance of nature at our fingertips. We love to be outdoors and enjoy the water, mountains, and singsong of birds.
However, when the sun goes down, temperatures drop—and it gets chilly. There are a number of options for outdoor heat that can help us warm our souls both inside and out. Gas Lanterns Gas lanterns were a staple in New Orleans and the South, and have now made an entrance on the West Coast. These charming fixtures are beautiful on a front porch or back deck, as they have a living fire inside of them and add warm light to any space. You will need to plan ahead when installing them, as they require a gas line to be installed inside of your walls. Built-In or Free-Standing Outdoor Fireplaces You can buy a cinder block kit to build the fireplace structure to accommodate a real wood-burning fire, or you can plumb it for gas for an easier gas log set. Look at the shipping cost, as these blocks are concrete and are delivered on pallets that are very heavy! These units will typically need to be faced with a ledgerstone or brick. Sometimes they are covered

with plaster for a more Spanish or modern look. MutualMaterials.com sells stone cladding. Outdoor Gas Fireplaces There are gas outdoor fireplace units you can purchase from a fireplace shop that can be framed in with wood, but make sure they are protected from the rain/elements, preferably under cover, as the water will damage your pilot light. After framing, these gas prefab units are then covered with stone surround to emulate the fireplaces we see inside a house, adorned with glass doors or a glass panel. Stone Fire Pits Stone fire pits are the easiest way to roast a marshmallow or burn wood in open air. There are kits available to make the project even easier. Make sure to measure your space first so that there is enough room to walk around the fire pit while also being able to accommodate a few Adirondack chairs. Pre-Made Metal or Stone Chiminea-Type Wood-Burning Units There are various options available online for small metal wood-burning free-standing units. I have found that the front opening of the unit needs to be fairly small, or you will get a horrible back draft of smoke spewing

at your face. The best units have small front openings to end the smoke up through the flue and out of the way. Propane Heaters Propane heaters are a terrific way to heat up a space. There are tall units that sit on the ground (with wheels for ease of mobility), or if you have a covered porch, installing ceiling heating units are very effective. These are typically hung between 6- to 8-feet apart and have a metal shield on top that deflects the heat downward toward your seating area. They can be hard wired in on a thermostat, which allows you to have more control over your heat than a free-standing unit that can easily be blown out by strong wind. Fire Pit Tables These can come with a built-in space for a propane tank under the table, or a hose that leads to a gas hookup on your house. Fire pit tables are a quick and easy way to add fire to a dinner party. You can enjoy the outdoors long into the cool evenings with a little fire. It’s up to you to decide which works best for your space and lifestyle.

But beyond the physical aspects of your investing experience, you may now be looking at some changes in your investment strategy brought on, or at least suggested, by your reactions to the pandemic.
For example, many people—especially, but not exclusively, those whose employment was affected by the pandemic—found that they were coming up short in the area of liquidity. They didn’t have enough easily accessible savings to provide them with the cash they needed to meet their expenses until their employment situations stabilized. Consequently, some individuals were forced to dip into their long-term investments, such as their 401(k)s and IRAs. Generally speaking, this type of move is not ideal— these accounts are designed for retirement, so, the more you tap into them early, the less you’ll have available when you do retire. Furthermore, your withdrawals will likely be taxable, and, depending on your age, may also be subject to penalties. If you were affected by this liquidity crunch, you can take steps now to avoid its recurrence. Your best move may be to build

When it comes to teaching kids about money, caregivers are asking for help. In fact, 32 percent of parents are uncomfortable speaking about finances with their own children, and 46 percent are looking for additional resources to help encourage good financial habits, according to a Chase survey of parents across the U.S., with children aged 8 to 14.

In addition to adopting useful tools, it's important to have ongoing conversations about finances. ‘INTO THE FOREST

friend of mine has a traffic-cone-orange T-shirt hanging from one of the bookcases in his living room. The shirt is new, unworn, and the bookcase is situated so that you can see it from anywhere in the main living area of his home. That makes the shirt impossible to miss. Knowing my friend, I was certain there was a story attached to this unique decoration.
either jumping or sliding. It wasn’t that far, maybe four or five feet, so I jumped.
“That’s my favorite hiking shirt,” he said, cryptically adding, “I just haven’t worn it yet.” He paused, giving my curiosity time to build, “I keep it there as a reminder and as a promise.
“Crack.”
“A few months ago, my family was exploring a beautiful preserve about an hour’s drive from our home, miles of well-kept hiking trails situated around a stunning lake, postcard idyllic. We were about a mile or so from the third trailhead, looking forward to a picnic lunch, when my youngest son spotted a fallen tree. “This kid can’t pass up a good climbing tree, so, up he went, and I followed. We started across, but the log was rotting in the center. My foot found a particularly mushy spot and I slipped. I knew I was going down, 30

“Good idea. Poor execution. My left foot landed in a hole, and I felt my heel catch on a tree root, as my momentum continued to carry me forward … until …
My friend shook his head, “What I thought would be another fun, immersive day exploring nature turned out to be the first of three days in the hospital, including surgery to repair a badly broken ankle, followed by six weeks hobbling around my house on one leg. “A single choice on what had been, up to that point, a perfect day, opened the door to a series of challenges, struggles and opportunities, some of which I’m still walking through … well, limping through, anyway.” My friend glanced at the shirt, smiled, “One day soon, I’m going to put that shirt on for the first time, and I’m going to hike that trail to the end and back again. I’ll probably move more slowly, certainly more carefully.
"It represents the first of many more hikes to come, new opportunities to explore, seeking adventure immersed in the beauty of nature." That’s why it’s my favorite shirt, because it represents the first of many more hikes to come, new opportunities to explore, seeking adventure immersed in the beauty of nature. “That’s the promise. And the reminder? The reminder is that those experiences that bring us exhilaration, illumination, joy and fulfillment may also cause us pain. That’s part of the risk integral to growth, and it shouldn’t discourage us from seeking adventure or embracing challenges. We’re at our best when we’re open and curious. We need to get out, to explore, to embrace the wonder and the opportunity on the other side of the unknown. That, to me, is the meaning behind the message on my favorite hiking shirt, a quote by the famous naturalist John Muir: ‘And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.’ “That’s always been one of my favorite reasons for heading out on the trail. You start the hike understanding the world and yourself in a certain way, and you always come home understanding both the world and yourself a little bit differently.”

My friend glanced at the traffic-coneorange shirt, adding, “Next time you go on an adventure, don’t go looking for anything in particular. ost visitors to Schweitzer Mountain enjoy having the lift take them to the top of the mountain. Come summer, there are those who enjoy a hike or mountain bike to the top as well. Few. however, tackle the mountain like those who enter into The GRIT North Idaho Trails Series Race the Wolf. It’s one thing to go for a trail run, but tackling great distances across one of the Northwest’s most iconic mountains requires a whole new level of commitment. Race the Wolf offers three challenging courses runners can attempt to tackle. Each crisscrosses the mountain, losing and gaining a ton of elevation. Greens, blues and blacks are all utilized as well as the mountain bike single-track lanes, and a few other steep climbs. For those just wanting a taste, there is an 8k trail race. The course heads out east from the village, and you’ll gain about 710 feet in

elevation throughout the run. The next step up is a 26k race—a serious challenge to even elite runners. This course covers a majority of the mountain including the backside. You’ll climb then drop then climb again. By the end you’ll have gained nearly a mile in elevation. This race is jokingly called “the half ”—but it is no joke. And the reason it’s the half is because of the featured race, a 52k ultra marathon for those looking for a serious test of strength, will and endurance. If you want to see all of Schweitzer in a day and then some, this is the way to do it. This grueling run takes many hours even for the most accomplished runners. It begins at 7:30am, and participants have 11 hours to complete it. Registration is now open for all three races. No matter the distance you choose, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment crossing the finish line. Visit RacetheWolf.com to register and for additional information.

Serving Sandpoint and Ponderay Your local experts in collision and auto body repair
By Jillian Chandler
I
t was 1976 when Mel Donenfeld founded Northwest Autobody and Towing to serve the Sandpoint community. Specializing in providing top-quality collision repair and extraordinary customer service since the first day of service, today, you will find a leadership team dedicated to using the latest technology while attracting, training and retaining the very best employees the industry has to offer. Mel expanded the business in 2014 with a second location in Ponderay, at which time his sons Eric and Cory Donenfeld took over ownership of the successful and popular business their father started more than four decades ago. “We grew up at Northwest Autobody and learned our trade by watching our father,” shares Eric. “He taught us the ‘Golden Rule’ about how to treat our employees and our customers. We treat everyone like family.” You will still find Mel stopping by the shops occasionally and making it a point to meet and talk with every employee when he does. Northwest Autobody is Gold Class certified by I-CAR—an international organization which promotes the highest level of technical skill in the collision industry. Their technicians are continuously recertifying to hone their skills and to learn new techniques, and they have invested in the training and equipment to be one of the only Ford, GM, Chrysler, Ram and Dodge certified repair facilities in the area. “Nothing compares to the satisfaction of talking with a customer who is ecstatic that their vehicle has been repaired above and beyond their expectations. When they contact us after an accident, customers are always treated with respect and empathy,” affirms Cory. Eric and Cory also enjoy watching and assisting their employees in earning a good living and realizing they are making a difference in many lives. “What really sets up apart is the level of connection we have in our communities,” says Eric. “We sponsor a ton of local activities, and our owners and employees are very active in many civic organizations.” Northwest Autobody and Towing has been honored by Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce and Business Network International (BNI), as well as the Pend Oreille Bay Trail and Firewood Rescue for their participation. In addition, Northwest Autobody has employees on the Board of Directors in many of these organizations—as well as many more!

“Success is contagious,” states Eric. “We make decisions every day, and all of those decisions can lead to our success. We learn and apply lessons all the time. We would not be the company we are if we didn’t have great employees and loyal customers.” When someone is in need of their services, there is a good chance Eric and Cory already know them or their family—after all, the two have called Sandpoint home their entire lives. And for those who are new to the area, the recommendations and ratings Northwest Autobody receives online act as the company’s word-of-mouth advertising. As Cory says, “We remind ourselves that the same natural beauty,
recreational opportunities and the quality of people who call here home that attracted our dad, and many others, are the same amenities that are attracting our newest residents.” Born and raised in Sandpoint, Eric and Cory are now raising families of their own. They love the outdoors, the recreational opportunities and organized sports, and they do their part as responsible citizens and business leaders to give back. “We love the spirit of giving we see by residents and those in the business community,” says Eric. If you are looking for the best collision and autobody repair in Sandpoint and Ponderay, or are in need of towing assistance (available 24 hours a day), look no further ... Eric, Cory and the rest of the Northwest Autobody and Towing team are ready to serve you.

A Hand Up in Sandpoint SANDPOINT COMMUNITY RESOURCE ENVISION CENTER PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO FLOURISH By Trish Buzzone
“MY HEART, MY GOAL, IS TO CREATE REAL, GENERATIONAL CHANGE. POVERTY IS LEARNED, AND SO IS SELF-SUFFICIENCY. IT REQUIRES AN INVESTMENT FROM BOTH SIDES, THE PROVIDER AND THE CLIENT."

Sandpoint Community Resource EnVISION Center Executive Director Linnis Jellinek brought together 19 community stakeholders and dozens of local service organizations to give people immediate help and create generational change.
W
hen I think about people with a heart for serving our community, I immediately think of Linnis Jellinek. I got to know Linnis shortly after moving to Sandpoint, and I was impressed with her vision for the Resource Center and her heart for creating generational change. Now that she and her team have brought that dream to life as the Sandpoint Community EnVision Center, I’m excited to celebrate the good being done and share how we can all get involved. Linnis, who has a background of leadership in the financial sector, is also a volunteer at heart with a lifelong passion for service. When she and her husband, Greg, arrived in Sandpoint, it didn’t take Linnis long to find an opportunity to serve.
“We had only been here a few months before I began to notice areas where I might help. When people are just making it day-to-day, one unexpected problem can cause a serious, long-term crisis. They’re working hard, sometimes multiple jobs, and it’s still not enough. One accident, one illness, one bad break, and their life could spiral out of control. The Resource Center, which is entering its 11th year serving this community, is there to help them before that happens. If we meet one urgent need before it multiplies into too much for anyone to manage, we help people get to a point where they take action to create long-term change. “The cycle of poverty is often generational. People learn it from their parents, their grandparents … They want better, for themselves and for their kids. Our goal is to give them those resources and show them those options.” Linnis says one of the biggest barriers is logistical. “People may need help finding a job and food and medical care. They’re told ‘Go here,’ then ‘Go there

and there and there’ … And every ‘there’ is on the other side of town. These people don’t have gas money. They can’t get to the resources. And, often, when they do, some places are only open a few hours a couple days a week. “We could give them a gas voucher, as well as a schedule of who’s open and when. That helps with the immediate need …,” Linnis pauses, excited to share the mission of the new Sandpoint Community EnVision Center, which opened this past May, “Or, we could bring many of these resources together under one roof, find the gaps and the overlaps, create a place where people get a hand up, not just a hand out. “Bringing these organizations together under one roof is more efficient for the client seeking help, and it optimizes resources for our community partners. They offer more help to more people, while creating more and deeper connections within the community.” This strategy serves what Linnis says is the primary goal of the EnVision Center, helping people become self-sufficient, so they build a good life for themselves and pass those blessings on to the next generation. “My heart, my goal, is to create real, generational change. Poverty is learned, and so is self-sufficiency. It requires an investment from both sides, the provider and the client, investing energy, effort and dedication to the process. That’s when real change happens.” Thanks to the support of 19 community stakeholders and many dedicated volunteers, Linnis says the EnVision Center has room for eight nonprofits to operate full-time, and room for up to 25 organizations to come and go on a part-time basis. Together, they meet immediate needs and help people develop a plan to become self-sufficient. “We deliver financial empowerment, educational advancement, health and wellness resources, and training to help people develop the character and leadership skills they need to be successful.” Linnis adds, “We know this community won’t thrive unless everyone has the opportunity and resources they need to flourish. The EnVision Center is really an innovation center. We’re developing that blueprint to shift poverty trends and create real, long-term change. I invite anyone interested in making a difference and anyone who wants to learn more about what we’re doing to reach out to me directly.” 38

One way for everyone to immediately support the Community Resource EnVision Center is to join them for the CREC’s inaugural IdaHOPE Classic charity golf event on Monday, June 21, at the Idaho Club. Redman & Company stepped up as the title sponsor; and, recognizing the opportunity to invest in their community, 50 additional sponsors signed up, and the player roster was filled before the end of March. The tournament may be sold out, but Linnis says there are still plenty of ways for people to invest in the vision of helping every person in Bonner and Boundary counties take positive, self-sustaining action to break the cycle of poverty and build a foundation for the next generation. Supporters, sponsors and donors are invited to join CREC at the Idaho Club, starting at 5pm, for a fantastic barbecue dinner prepared by Chef Richard. Barbecue pork, fresh sides, delicious peach cobbler, and the company of people looking to make a difference in our community—all for $40 per person. Guests will also have the opportunity to bid on stellar silent auction items and try their luck in the 50/50 raffle. All of this fun and fellowship will support the CREC’s efforts to bring community nonprofits together, fund their services, and help more people take real, long-term positive action to build better lives. The Sandpoint Community Resource EnVision Center is located at 130 McGhee Road, Suite 220 in Sandpoint. Coeur d’Alene’s annual Independence Day celebration is back with a parade, festival in the park and Independence Point fireworks show. The Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce reported the board has decided in favor of scheduling the city’s annual two-day celebration of Independence Day. Last year’s festivities and parade were canceled due to COVID-19 safety precautions and restrictions. This year, Coeur d’Alene brings back the community event that annually boosts the economy along with the spirits of locals and visitors to the area. The weekend-long, family friendly event will kick off in City Park on Saturday, July 3.
Vendors and carnival rides will be set up in the park from noon until 7pm that day. Following tradition, the parade will kick off at 11am on the 4th, starting on 15th Street and supported by vendor booths, music and another day of family friendly activities in the City Park, with the fireworks display at dusk presenting the holiday’s grand finale over Lake Coeur d’Alene. No COVID restrictions are placed on the event, although the Coeur d’Alene Chamber encourages attendees to maintain safe practices while enjoying the holiday. “As always, it is your right to assess the risks involved, take your own precautions, and

Tickets are available online, with options available for all ages (plus, children aged 2 and younger dine free).
Spirit Lake Parade & Fireworks Those looking for a chance to beat some of the Fourth of July crowds in a small-town setting can opt for a short trip to Spirit Lake. Spirit Lake will host a morning parade on the Fourth, beginning at 11am, along with an oldfashioned, family friendly celebration in City Park, and to top it all off, evening fireworks.
Harrison’s July 4th Celebration On the south end of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Harrison, Idaho, is expected to have its annual Fourth of July fireworks display sponsored by the Harrison Chamber of Commerce. amily owned and operated, Turner Plumbing is a company that strives to add value to the community while excelling in customer service. A full-service plumbing company that is dedicated to serving both Boundary and Bonner counties, Turner Plumbing—with the addition of their excavation and underground department Turner Dirt—offers 24/7 emergency repair response and service, water heater services, sewer camera with sonar locating, slip-inspections, hydronic heating and boiler systems, underground repairs, septic systems, small drain jetting and gas piping, and new construction and remodels. Lucas Turner has been a plumber for 17 years and always had a desire to have his own plumbing company, while Mike DesRosiers was an experienced machinist in the oil fields. The two friends had often discussed starting a business together, and in 2019, they decided to put their skills, talents and finances together, creating a vision of what they wanted to be as businessmen and members of the community. Lucas and Mike planned out their goals for the company and started taking action to move that direction. “When these two men put their minds to doing something, things start happening!” shares Charli Turner, Lucas’ wife and marketing and human resources administrator of Turner Plumbing. They soon realized their goal, and Turner Plumbing was born in January of 2020. The Turner Plumbing team is comprised of a group of men who all take pride in doing quality work and leaving the customer happy at the end of each job they complete. “Every one of our guys comes with a unique skill set,” says Charli. One journeyman specializes in hydronic heat; one is a gas pipe specialist; another one of their journeymen is a master at service plumbing. “These men take pride in learning from each other to be the best they can be,” she adds. Their apprentices are equally hard workers and fast learners. Along with working long hours, they are in school every day working toward their journeyman’s license and taking certification classes for Turner Plumbing’s new construction and underground department—Turner Dirt. “We have a fantastic team of nine people who show up every day and give everything they have to make Turner Plumbing a success,” affirms Charli. “We have the most top-notch team in North Idaho, and we are very proud to have them as part of the Turner Plumbing team.”

Employees earn competitive wages along with a unique benefits package. CELEBRATING LOCAL ARTS & CULTURE Sandpoint’s ArtWalk returns on June 18
T
BY TAYLOR SHILLAM
he Pacific Northwest is a beautiful home to creators and culture, with Sandpoint being North Idaho’s haven for originality and artists of all kinds. Its natural, resort town beauty extends from Sandpoint’s outdoor landscapes and charming downtown streets to the artistic culture that thrives within them. Sandpoint is home to events and establishments that celebrate art in its diverse forms, from galleries stocked with paintings to cafés hosting poetry readings, to theaters celebrating the performing arts. Next month, the Festival at Sandpoint, a widely renowned and universally popular annual concert series known for celebrating eclectic music and community, is set to make a memorable return. Another return this summer marks a celebration the town eagerly welcomes back in 2021: ArtWalk. Each summer, local artisans, business owners and art galleries throughout downtown Sandpoint come together for an event designed to showcase the unique artists that embody the talent and culture the town has to offer.

ArtWalk is presented by the Pend Oreille Arts Council, an organization whose mission is to facilitate quality experiences in the arts through educational programs and presentations that benefit the people of North Idaho. The event provides local artists both in and outside of the POAC a chance to exhibit their work in a free citywide event, open to all ages. It begins with a night not to miss on Friday, June 18, from 5:30 to 8pm, when the ArtWalk’s opening reception kicks off downtown. Attendees can preview the artists and plan their route through the event with maps of the walking tour, which are available online. This year, a number of new businesses will be participating in the ArtWalk for the first time, and the Panida Theater will be a memorable stop on the map. Teresa Pesce has written a series of plays called Art as Theater, inspired by works of art. The artwork is set to be displayed in the Little Panida during ArtWalk’s opening reception. The Panida Theater opened in 1927 as a vaudeville and movie house, with its name reflecting the area whose culture and talent it sought to

highlight: the panhandle of Idaho. It has since hosted film festivals both local and international, dance recitals, live theatre, comedy, educational presentations, concerts and more. The area’s only full-feature performing arts facility, the Panida takes pride in the experience it offers: impressive acoustics, a 50-inch movie screen, updated sound board, and a space that can hold exceptional talent and audiences. “There’s truly not a bad seat in this house that can hold 500,” the theater claims, proudly noting its high audience rate for its audience base that averages nearly 200 people in attendance for its hundreds of scheduled performances throughout the year. Eleven years ago, an unusual play titled Red Tape was one of those performances. Pesce recalls the story of its premiere. “It was a unique combination of Sandpoint talent,” she described. She wrote the original script inspired by nine massive paintings by internationally renowned artist Stephen Schultz, alongside musician Alan Ball improvising a dialogue counterpoint on a grand piano. She christened the play Art as Theater, a play based on a story suggested by an artist’s creation.

This year, a new Art as Theater production, now sponsored by the Panida Theater itself as well as the Pend Oreille Arts Council, will premiere on the Panida's main stage on the second weekend of the ArtWalk, taking place June 25 through 27. The series of five original acts written and directed by Pesce is inspired by the works of local artists Patricia Ragone, Suzanne Jewell, Connie Scherr and Scott Kirby. Pesce emailed her scripts to each artist, asking for their permission for their work to be interpreted for the play. She recalls the artists being incredibly gracious, receiving responses that were genuinely heartfelt. Suzanne Jewell, artist of Three Houses, responded, “I’m in, flattered and completely intrigued by this idea! What a concept.” Connie Scherr, who painted The Bridge, wrote back, “Well, my my! My painting inspired this? I am moved. If your play makes it to the stage, I want a front row seat!” Musician Dave Gunter of Bridges Home also gave a warm welcome to the opportunity to create and perform a musical score inspired by the stories. “Our community is such a wellspring of talent and creativity, and I like the idea that Art as Theater brings them together in this way,” Gunter said. “It’s a fresh concept, and it will be great fun!”

The theater held auditions in April for the series of plays. “I was happy to see so many new faces at the audition,” the theater shared from Pesce. “They are gifted actors, one and all, and I’m excited to work with such a talented cast.” The cast began weekly rehearsals on May 1, with additional, complete rehearsals set to take place in the last weeks before the event. “We are excited to bring in the performing arts aspect to ArtWalk,” says POAC Board President Carol Deaner. Art as Theater will premiere in the Panida Main Theater on Friday, June 25, with a reception at 6:30pm before the 7:30 performance. The play will run on June 25 and 26, with a Sunday matinee showing on June 27 at 3pm, adding to the culture and energy surrounding the ArtWalk. The citywide ArtWalk, a revolving art exhibit featuring artists at a wide selection of downtown galleries, is free and encourages all ages to attend, beginning the evening of June 18. The event appreciates their many exhibitors, vendors, sponsors and supporters, including Ting internet sponsoring this year’s event brochure. For more details on the ArtWalk’s event schedule, its featured artists and exhibits, visit ArtinSandpoint.org. The art is set to be on display through the event's closing reception on Friday, September 3, allowing anyone unable to attend the ArtWalk’s opening night to have a chance to enjoy it throughout the summer. Those interested in attending can follow along on Facebook or at ArtinSandpoint.org for more information about attending the ArtWalk and the POAC’s additional upcoming events highlighting art in the area. Local culture is something to celebrate, and this year’s return of the ArtWalk gives art enthusiasts near and far the chance to witness Sandpoint’s thriving arts and culture scene. The chance to celebrate some of the best in the Pacific Northwest, right here in the heart of our city, is one not to miss.

TUMMY TIME
It’s not just for babies
By Molly Radonich, LAT, ATC, Kauai Therapy & Wellness
E
ighty-six percent of Americans sit for their jobs all day. Then we go home and sit at the dinner table, followed by sitting to watch TV. We sit a lot, and generally most of us don’t sit up straight either. This leads to forward head posture, curved shoulders and a rounded spine. This can tighten up the muscles in the front of our body and makes the muscles in the back really weak. The muscles in our back help with posture and the ability to move our spine. If we let those become weak and stiff, we are predisposed to having back pain and other issues. So, what can we do about this? When babies are growing and developing, we have them do “tummy time” to help strengthen their back muscles and encourage proper development of the spine. Though adults are done growing, it is still beneficial to be in positions in which we are on our
stomachs. This position is good to help encourage extension of the spine and strengthen your posterior muscles. "How should I do this at home?" There are several ways to safely perform prone strengthening and stretching exercises. The first thing to try is what physical therapists call “prone on the elbow.” To perform this motion, start on your stomach, and prop yourself up with your elbows directly under your shoulders. Let your glute muscles (the muscles on your sit bones), relax and take deep breaths. If you feel sharp or radiating pains, discontinue exercise and seek medical advice. This exercise will help with low-back and mid-back extension and help strengthen your posterior neck muscles. Once you feel confident with the prone on elbows exercise, you can move

The cracked, dry skin of winter is behind us. But now with the sun shining and spending more time outdoors embracing the warmth, it's important to properly prepare your skin and keep it glowing. Stay hydrated, exfoliate and wear sunscreen daily—even if the weather is overcast. And don't forget to protect those lips with a lip balm or sunscreen with a minimum of 20 SPF.

Though adults are done growing, it is still beneficial to be in positions in which we are on our stomachs. to a cobra pose. This pose is very similar, but you will be actively moving up and down. For this pose, you will start on your stomach as well, and place your hands underneath your shoulders. Keeping your elbows tucked in at your sides, lift up and leave your hips on the ground. For this exercise, make sure you inhale on your way up and exhale on your way down. This exercise helps to strengthen your back and neck muscles while stretching out the front of your body. Make sure you are keeping your glutes relaxed. Stop if you feel pain or radiating symptoms down your back, and seek medical advice. Once you feel confident with those two poses, you can move onto the Superman pose. This strengthens many of your posterior muscles including hamstrings and back muscles. To perform this pose, start on your stomach. Lift your head, arms and legs off of the ground,
leaving just your hip bones and stomach on the floor. You can inhale up and exhale on your way back down, or you can hold this position for 30 seconds and repeat three times. Make sure your head is in a neutral position and you are not straining to look up or down. If you spend a lot of time at a computer or a desk, I would encourage you to spend some time on your stomach to promote extension of the spine. A rounded spine is very hard to correct once muscles have gotten accustomed to a slouched position—and can lead to pain and injury. Try to spend 10 minutes a day on your stomach to keep you standing tall for a long time!

MEN’S HEALTH AWARENESS TA K I N G C H A R G E O F Y O U R H E A LT H F O R L O N G - L A S T I N G W E L L N E S S By Kristin Carlson, Marketing Specialist, Bonner General Health

here is a long-lasting culture, specific to men, in which being “tough” or “toughing it out” translates to ignoring pain or health warning signs that something may be wrong. When it comes to preventative health, in which one schedules routine checkups, tests and screenings, to detect or prevent health issues in the early stages, women are 100 percent more likely than men to visit a provider for such appointments. June is Men’s Health Awareness Month. The purpose is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men of all ages. Some health issues are more common in men. Knowing there is a greater risk for developing certain conditions may motivate you to take steps to protect your health now. Bonner General Family Practice Nurse Practitioner Lana Young shares her recommendations for preventative health steps men should take. Health Tests and Screenings
Where to Start Start by establishing yourself with a primary care provider. This person will help you build a plan and schedule for what tests and screenings you need, a timetable, and coordinate referrals to specialty providers. Who will be on your health-care team depends on your age, current health and risk factors for serious illness. All men should have a primary care provider and regularly visit that person, even if they feel well. You may need to see other doctors: a cardiologist, urologist, gastroenterologist, nephrologist, dermatologist, dentist, eye doctor and a psychologist. Most importantly, find a provider you feel comfortable with and who you can be open and honest with. Withholding information about your health will hinder treatment and overall long-term well-being. Others Things You Can Do • Eat a healthy diet.
• Prostate Cancer Screening: Between the ages of 55 and 69, earlier if you have risk factors such as a family history
• Get moving; even a daily walk is a good start.
• STD Screening: Based on your personal history
• If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation.
• Cholesterol and Blood Screening: Age 40, and every five years (cholesterol), blood pressure (every visit or at least once a year) • Diabetes Test: After the age of 45, if you have signs or symptoms (earlier depending on family history) • Colonoscopy: Age of 50, earlier if you have risk factors or symptoms • Hearing and Vision: Baseline at 40 if no issues prior • Oral Health: One to two times per year for your entire adult life. Regular checkups with teeth cleaning, oral health exams and X-rays can prevent longterm, costly dental work, as well as severe infections and diseases, if issues are left untreated.
• Break unhealthy habits like smoking or vaping. • Get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. • Protect your skin with daily sunscreen use or protective clothing. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it, especially when it comes to your mental health. If you’re feeling anxious, depressed or overly stressed, contact your primary care provider. Again, having a trusting relationship with your provider will be valuable if this type of issue arises. Taking charge of your well-being now can provide a better chance of a longlasting, healthy life, benefiting not only you but those who depend on you. Don’t tough it out—take action. IT’S TIME TO DETOX YOUR BODY Springtime and early summer are the perfect time
By Missi Balison
PREPARE YOURSELF FOR A HEALTHY SUMMER WITH A DETOX PLAN THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR LIFESTYLE.
62
| SANDPOINT LIVING LOCAL
O
ur bodies have natural detoxification pathways, but with the increased toxic exposure we face in today’s world (pesticides on our food, perfumes and chemicals in our beauty products, social media exposure adding pressure, busy and stressful lives), those pathways can become overburdened.
contributes to a host of problems. Sore joints anyone?
Having these detoxification pathways running smoothly is key to our health.
Strengthen your immune system. After your detoxification, your body will have better digestive and lymphatic function. Both of these are key to a strong and balanced immune system.
Ever wonder why you are sluggish, or depressed, or anxious, or have skin issues? Toxins, even seemingly low levels of toxins, can really impair our ability to function at our best. Here is a list of just some of the many benefits you may notice from supporting your detox pathways: Boost energy levels. The sluggish feeling we get during the day can be the result of excess toxins in the body. Removing excess toxins can help to increase energy levels and keep you going strong throughout the day. Support digestion and weight management. Detoxification can also help with long-term weight management by removing the toxins that are currently interfering with proper metabolic function and helping to set you up with healthy habits. Reduce inflammation. Diet is an important aspect of detox. By supporting your digestive system through eating a diet of whole foods packed full of the nutrients your body needs, you will help to reduce inflammation that
Promote healthy skin. Diet and environmental toxins undeniably affect skin. By supporting the body in the removal of free radicals, heavy metals and other toxins, you will help to improve the appearance of your skin.
Improve your mood. Toxins and free radicals that accumulate in the body can also affect brain function. By removing the accumulations interfering with your mental and emotional state, you will open yourself up to better sleep, clear thought and positive energy. Boost your metabolism. Your liver is largely related to the smooth running of your metabolism. If your liver is working hard to rid the body of all of the toxins it is exposed to on a daily basis (and it is!), it cannot function at its highest level to keep your metabolism running smoothly. As spring comes to an end, prepare yourself for a healthy summer with a detox plan that works best for you and your lifestyle. Your body, and mind, will thank you. KEEPING OUR LAKE AND RIVERS CLEAN HEAVY METALS DON'T BELONG IN OUR BODY NOR OUR WATER
BY SCOTT PORTER, SANDPOINT SUPER DRUG
O
ne of our community’s greatest assets is Lake Pend Oreille and the waters that pass through it. These rivers flow from the continental divide in Montana, through Washington, and into the Pacific Ocean. Maintaining and enhancing the quality of these natural beauties is an important responsibility we all share. Some of the common water quality concerns include excessive levels of algae, nutrient loads from soluble phosphorus and nitrogen, fecal coliform bacteria, and the proliferation of Eurasian watermilfoil. But an important one for me are the levels of heavy metals from past mining and smelting activities. These heavy contaminants have sunk to the bottom of the lakebed from historic discharges and settle from the flood plains as sediments during high runoff. The further away from mining operations, the lower these concentrations are. There is always a process of natural mineralization of our waters. But infiltration of minerals is greatly increased near mine tailings and industrial operations. These minerals include silver, cadmium, copper, lead, zinc and arsenic. Each of them can pose a risk to both aquatic life and humans. Mercury is an important concern for me, but it is a different issue because it comes from a number of sources. Airborne contaminants can travel as far away as Asia and end up in our soils and water. Industrial processes and activities that disturb the ground can also release this heavy metal. Mercury changes into a more toxic form as it enters bacteria-rich and low-oxygen waters. The problem with this form of mercury is that it accumulates, especially in fish, resulting in regional advisories limiting the quantity to consume. It is not just mines and smelters that historically polluted our rivers and lake. Pulp and paper mills, as well as lumber treatment operations, contributed their share of chemicals, like PCP and creosote. Several sites that have drainage into Lake Pend Oreille have been designated as federal Superfund cleanup sites. Some make it to the top of the list and receive funds. This includes areas around Upper Clark Fork, Milltown, Anaconda and Butte. There are other Superfund designations close by like the Poles Inc. site in Old Town and Conjecture Mine in Lakeview. Sandpoint itself is host to contaminated areas including the old Joslyn pole yard, which flows into Sand Creek, and Panhandle Smelting and Refining at Black Rock on the west side of the lake. There is definite progress being made to clean some of these sites up. Along the Clark Fork River in Montana, trout have returned and cottonwood trees are leafing out. Over the years, water quality has been measurably improved. Yet, there are hundreds of other abandoned mines that cannot be addressed due to lack of funding. Normally our body is great at detoxifying itself. Sometimes, though, we get too much of an insulting compound like mercury. At other times, our detoxification processes are impaired, either through genetics or chronic patterns, and then we need additional help. I think all of us can benefit from supporting normal and healthy detoxification pathways through our diet and careful adjustment of nutrient deficiencies. Glutathione, milk thistle and alpha-lipoic acid are some noteworthy compounds. Come on down to Sandpoint Super Drug if you’d like one of our free comprehensive detoxification guides. Scott Porter, a functional medicine pharmacist, is the director of the Center for Functional Medicine & Nutrition at Sandpoint Super Drug.

NUPTIALS WEDDING BELLS RING OUT STORIES OF EMPTY CAMERAS, BROKEN ZIPPERS AND A DRUNKEN ROAD TRIP TO MEXICO BY DAN AZNOFF
Author’s note: The following collection of anecdotes are excerpts from an upcoming book tentatively titled "Notorious Nuptials." Each of the stories have been sourced with members of the wedding party. Be advised: Some of these wedding stories date back more than 50 years.
and Rob Larson at the home of the bride’s parents. They agreed the mishap was the result of a critical error in judgement.

The bride explained that lack of table space eventually forced the punch bowl to be moved to a low coffee table in the living room, just out of sight of the adults in the room.

Every marriage ceremony is unique in the collective reminiscences of the people who were involved. They generate emotions ranging from the father of the bride, who reluctantly gives away his little girl, to the maid of honor, who stands aside as she loses her best friend to a man that she has slowly come to accept as part of her own extended family. Emily Norgaard of Mukilteo, Washington, can still remember the words of caution that her father uttered when the two most important men in her life faced off in the aisle during her own wedding procession. “My father horrified by my soon-to-be-husband when he warned him that he was giving the bride away,” she remembered. “He (my father) made it clear that his store did not offer an exchange or return policy.” If the shoe fits The ring bearer forced Delores Dobson of Anaheim, California, to delay her ceremony while the mother of the 6-year-old boy rushed out on a Sunday morning to buy her son dress shoes that actually fit his young feet. “How does a 6-year-old who wears a child’s shoe fit into a size 13 men’s shoe?” the bride asked rhetorically. His mom had to buy a new pair. “That was not a simple task on a Sunday morning,” explained Delores. “Our wedding was 45 minutes late.” Inevitable Young people were responsible for the mess at the reception for Carlotte

“All the tables were taken up with food, drinks and gifts,” said Carlotte.
“So, it was not a surprise when the small children washed their hands in the punch bowl,” she remembered. Her new husband was more understanding. “It was all okay. It was something we all should have expected,” Rob said with a heavy sigh. No Rx for dumb As a medical professional, Dr. Larry Johnson thought he had anticipated “every possibility that could go wrong” prior to his “very expensive” wedding at the posh Beverly Hills Hotel in 1968. Larry wanted every aspect of his wedding day to be perfect. That included contracting with a professional photographer to document intimate moments during the ceremony and at the lavish reception. But the doctor was ready to seek legal help when he realized the socalled professional had forgotten to load film into his camera. The good doctor wanted to file legal action against the vendor. “I wanted to sue,” Johnson said after some reflection. “But my ‘brilliant’ father-in-law said not to sue. “He was wrong!” Lost in translation The third time was supposed to be the charm for Amber Palms,

California, resident Joe Morris when he flew his fiancé and the entire wedding party to Acapulco for a romantic seaside ceremony in April of 2000. The destination wedding seemed to be “muy bueno” until it came time for the bride and groom to exchange vows. That was when Morris looked down at the words he was expected to recite. “My wedding vows were all written in Spanish,” he remembered with a sinister laugh. “I could not understand a word of what I was supposed to say.” Quick drink A quick visit south of the border was also part of the wedding story provided by Tom Margitan, who also resides in Arbor Palms. An impromptu road trip became part of the wedding plan when Tom realized his bride needed to visit Mexico together with her soon-to-be-ex-husband for a quickie divorce. According to Tom, the husband agreed on the condition they could stop for “a drink” along the way. According to Tom, “a drink” to his wife’s former spouse really meant a stop at every cantina and watering hole along the highway. The threesome eventually made their way to Mexico and back across the border into Nevada, where Tom was legally able to marry his bride in Las Vegas. Don’t mess with Mother Nature The unpredictable weather in Seattle sent a spiritual message to the bride and groom during the wedding of Joel and haron Hoerner. Their wedding day began on an ominous note when the flowers for the ceremony were mistakenly delivered to the wrong church, which caused the ceremony to be delayed for more than an hour. As a result, Sharon’s sister Carlotte and Joel’s sister Beth were prepared to walk up the aisle empty-handed. As it turned out, the missing flowers were a lucky twist that gave the attendants a free hand because the formal dresses that had been ordered were all too long. “The bridesmaids each walked up the aisle with one hand holding their bouquet and the other holding up their dresses,” Sharon remembered in vivid detail. “The bridesmaids were

hunched over during the procession and then up four steps.” That was when Mother Nature decided to get involved in the April wedding by pelting the chapel with sheets of rain, sleet and hail. “At one point the hail hitting the roof was so loud we could barely hear each other reading our vows,” Joel remembered. The weather, however, did not take away from their happy day. “The sun eventually broke through, and we had bright sunshine all within the time of the wedding,” Sharon said with a smile. Ever the romantic, Joel accepted the changes to the weather as a blessing. “God was sending us a message that our marriage could survive any storm.” Looking back at his wedding day, Joel admitted that staging a wedding in Seattle during April was probably not the best plan. An exclusive The author of this article was a reporter in Los Angeles when he contracted with an award-winning newspaper photographer to document his own wedding in Newport Beach, California. The problem was the photographer had never “covered” a wedding before. The result was that the so-called professional documented the wedding like a news event, which meant every photo included the bride and groom. “You would have thought we were the only people in attendance,” said Dan, able to laugh about the blunder 41 years after the fact. Faux tropic After living together for eight years, Greg Elwin and his fiancé Stephanie decided that if they ever did get married, they would exchange vows with their toes in warm tropical sand. However, the former police chief made the practical decision to save his money for the honeymoon by inviting their closest friends and relatives to a clambake at Sunset Beach near the Hood on the Puget Sound. With their toes buried in some of the 200 pounds of pure white sand imported for the occasion, the happy couple were married by a close friend who had received his ordination over the internet. Stephanie’s daughter, Ashley, served as the official photographer as part of her junior high school class assignment. Note: Greg and Stephanie saved scoops of the white sand and have it spread near their hot tub to preserve the memories. Missed it by that much Melinda Cavalleto of Old Town Mukilteo can still recall glancing over her shoulder during her ceremony long enough to see her brother and father with their arms outstretched prepared to catch her maid of honor as she swayed back and forth. The officiant, she remembered, had apparently not recovered from drinking too much at the rehearsal dinner the night before. 70

in-law were too narrow in the waist to fasten when he arrived on the day of his daughter’s wedding at the elegant Huntington-Sheraton Hotel south of Pasadena in 1976.
Double-crossed by the old double switch
When the father-of-the bride threatened to not walk his daughter down the aisle, the groom was ready with his response.
Mary Smith can still laugh when she recounts the series of blunders that took place with the keys to her car following her wedding to her beloved Richard at the Atwater Baptist Church in Los Angeles in 1958. “When we were ready to leave, my husband’s friend had his car. That is when my husband remembered that he had the keys to his friend’s car that was parked in front of the church,” she said with a huge smile. “The best man was left holding a second set of car keys as he watched the newlyweds jump into his car and drive away.” Mary went on to explain what the best man did not know was that some pranksters from the wedding party had already fiddled with the car that was normally driven by the bride and groom. “When his friend jumped into our car, it would not start because another friend had disconnected the necessary wires.” Measure twice, zip once After refusing to be measured for his tuxedo, retired teacher Julius Aznoff was not surprised when the tuxedo pants reserved for his father72

“The hell you’re not,” Julius snapped. “Pull them up, button your coat and get out there.” The stunned father turned to one of the groomsmen to confide that he could not pull up his zipper. With a smile, he was reminded that his daughter’s wedding was not an appropriate time to brag about the size of his anatomy.

Picture perfect What could have been an emotional disaster for a young bride in Harbour Pointe, Washington, developed into a picture-perfect wedding day that created memories she will cherish for a lifetime. Stephannie Stumpf admitted to being a “photo fanatic” who wanted to document every moment of her wedding day 24 years ago. The image she envisioned suddenly went out of focus two days prior to the wedding when the groom’s father suffered a heart attack that left him in the hospital when the couple were scheduled to exchange their vows. To guarantee a picture-perfect day, Stephannie got on the phone with the hospital and received special permission to take her wedding photos at the hospital with the entire wedding party, including her father-in-law dressed in his tuxedo. “So, our wedding party and the photographer drove to the hospital before our wedding to take the formal photos,” she remembered lovingly. “I will forever be grateful that we had that chance.” Everybody has a wedding story, and there is still time to add your story to "Notorious Nuptials." Practice That Swing! S U M M ER BR INGS P L AY ER S OF ALL SK ILL LEVELS TO THE GOLF COURSE by COLIN ANDERSON

t’s the great unconquerable game that we both love and despise. A slight twist in the hips, movement of the head or proximity to the ball and your shot might be heading for the woods, the drink, or the beach. Still, when you line everything up just right, strike the ball cleanly and smash a perfect drive down the fairway, or watch your approach shot land softly just feet from the pin, there really is no feeling like a great golf shot. Whether you’re a weekend duffer, retiree playing with friends, scratch player, or just getting started with the game, every round of golf is a challenge. With the most stable weather of the year, summer is when the courses see, by far, the most visitors. The weekend warriors come out of hibernation, typically cruising in a power cart and taking down several nerve-calming beverages throughout their round. The final tally isn’t always what’s important to these golfers, rather the camaraderie amongst friends after a long week of work, coupled with enjoying a great Northwest day outdoors having fun instead of tackling yard work. Still, others seek the serenity of a quiet round just after sunrise. In the calm of the early morning, the crack of a tee shot seems to linger longer, and getting in a quick 9 before most have even started their day gives a great sense of pride to early risers.

No matter your skill set and the experience you hope to achieve, you are very likely sitting just a short drive from a course that can provide what you are looking for. If it has been some time since you last swung a club or if you are new to the game, there are a few things on the to-do list that will help ‘get you in the swing of things’ for prime summer rounds. Anyone who has kept an eye on the PGA Tour over the past 20 years has seen a pretty dramatic shift in player appearance. Gone are most of the rail skinny and overly husky players, and most pro players today take their fitness seriously. Even if making a tour isn’t your ultimate goal, treating golf like an athletic event will almost certainly help improve your game. While it’s tempting to pull up to the course, practice a few puts then head to the #1 tee box and swing full speed, a proper warmup is key to setting yourself up for success. Stretch out your entire body. Roll

of play is important to everyone having fun. If your ball goes out of bounds, spend just a minute or two searching for it and, if it can’t be found quickly, take a drop and move on. If the group behind you is moving quicker, stop at the next tee box and let them play through.
Between rounds, a day or two of yoga or stretching sessions is immensely beneficial for flexibility. Simple bodyweight movements like push-ups, crunches, squats and lunges will help balance all the muscles utilized in your golf swing. For those who want to get serious, there are many personal trainers out there who can design a routine specific to golfers.
Finally, don’t be afraid to take advice from an expert. Sometimes the smallest of adjustments can make a world of difference. Trained PGA professionals at almost every course can recognize flaws in your swing, which, when corrected, will help you hit straighter, longer, and lower your score.

A Couple Courses to Try: The Idaho Club Boasting Idaho’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature Design course, the Idaho Club’s 18 holes take full advantage of the surrounding beauty of the area. The course flows naturally with the Pack River, so water is found all throughout the course. Tucked in a valley, the surrounding forests are also striking. It’s not uncommon to come across deer, elk or even moose during your round. Course members get the early tee times, but the public is welcome beginning at 10:30am. You can relax after your round back at the beautiful clubhouse and enjoy a great meal or drink. Sandpoint Elks If you’re looking to play a quick 9, just want to hang out with friends, or teach someone the game, the Sandpoint Elks course is a great place to start. The small course covers a little less than 2,900 yards, so much of your day is spent with the low irons. The course is very walkable, but cart rentals are also available. Most holes are very straight, and hazards are kept to a minimum.

The most foundational water adventure doesn’t require anything extra. Sometimes the best part of summer is simply enjoying water the old-fashioned way, with a good old swim! Take the opportunity to develop your swimming skills this summer by jumping in—it’s a great workout and the perfect way to cool down. Just remember, even lakes and rivers can have dangerous undercurrents or swells, particularly during storms, high winds or rainy weather, so make sure it’s safe before you take the plunge. And for the kiddos, don’t forget those life jackets or floaties!

The perfect way to explore nature from a different point of view is from a kayak, when you’ll have the time and peace to take everything in while enjoying a healthy adventure on the water. Kayaks can be used on any body of water, which make them ideal for exploring those hard-toget-to spots your powerboat can’t go. There are many different types of kayaks ranging from whitewater and recreational to inflatable, so visit your local outdoor adventure or watersports store to find the right fit for you, and consider borrowing or renting first before you invest your money.

boating
Power boating is a big part of our summer life on the water, and it's a great way to explore more distant reaches, or head out on a day-long adventure to various marinas, waterfront restaurants and great swimming holes. But boats are a big investment, and they take some skill and experience to operate. Boating safety courses are a great way to make sure you’re safe out there on the water—both for yourself and for other boaters around you. BoatUS Foundation offers free boating safety courses as well as additional education, and there are a variety of local organizations and businesses that can help you get started.
paddle boarding
Paddle boarding is becoming an ever more popular summer sport, and for good reason. It’s simple, fun, a good workout and relatively inexpensive to get into. Hop on your board and paddle out for some scenic views and a great core and upper-body workout. Great as a solo sport or with friends and family, paddle boarding is easy to pick up if you’re a first timer, and there are a variety of board options to choose from, including inflatable boards that make storage and transportation super easy. Not sure if paddle boarding is for you? Rent one to try it out before you spring for your own board—most local water sports, outdoor and boat rental companies will have them available.

fishing

Letting the wind carry you is one of the most incredible (and peaceful) boating experiences you'll have. If you’re new to the sailing world, consider hopping on with a friend to learn, or take some lessons before you invest in your own boat. There's quite a bit of experience and knowledge that goes along with rigging out a sailboat, let alone sailing it. Get involved with a sailing crew to learn the ropes—many are happy to take on new members. You'll get firsthand experience, plus be able to start racing and meet a ton of people who will support you in your sailing career.
Throw a line in from the boat or shore, and enjoy the rush when you get that first bite or land the big one. If you’re looking for a true adventure, sign on for a fishing charter or fly fishing class—there are a wide variety of options ranging from multi-day trips to scenic boat tours into remote rivers or lakes. It’s a great opportunity to learn something new and have an experience you’ll never forget. If you are headed out this summer to throw in a line, don’t forget fishing rules and license requirements change depending on where you are, so make sure you’re licensed and ready to go.

WASHINGTON’S CASCADE LOOP The Ultimate Summer Road Trip, Part II By Marguerite Cleveland
P
art II of the Ultimate Summer Road Trip begins by heading through farmlands toward the jagged peaks of the Cascade Mountains, where you will make your first of two crossings. Highway 2 follows the Skykomish River in an area known as the Stevens Pass Greenway, which is a National Scenic Byway as well. This drive passes through the charming small towns of Sultan, Gold Bar, Index and Skykomish, each with its own local flair. A must stop for coffee is the cute Espresso Chalet, which is the home of Harry, the endearing sasquatch from the movie “Harry and the Hendersons.” Other must stops include Wallace Falls State Park and a hike to Bridal Veil Falls. Once you are past Skykomish the road begins to narrow and climb up to Stevens Pass with its incredible views. There are stunning overlooks and picnic areas on the river throughout this drive, so plan to take lunch with you to enjoy some time outdoors. After crossing Stevens Pass continue along Highway 2 through the stunning Tumwater Canyon to Leavenworth.

CRUISE THE 25-MILE PAVED LOOP THAT CIRCLES THE RIVER AND CROSSES TWO BRIDGES FOR A BEAUTIFULLY SCENIC RIDE.
Leavenworth Leavenworth is a cute Bavarian-themed town, which will make you feel like you are in Germany or an Alpine village. There is so much to see and do in town. Try some German food or pop into one of the many tasting rooms for local wine or cider. With a main street closed to traffic, it is a wonderfully walkable town. Schocolat offers handcrafted Belgian chocolates that are a luxurious taste not to be missed. The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm is a fascinating place to learn about Caribou as well as the opportunity to feed them. Leavenworth is also known for all of its outdoor recreation. Enjoy a tube float on the Wenatchee River or hike on more than 800 miles of trails. Plan to stay the night here at the Icicle Village Resort and Spa. It is close enough to walk to everything in town but away from all the noise. The onsite restaurant JJ Hills Fresh Grill has some Bavarian favorites as well as a Northwest-themed menu. The outdoor patio has great views of the Cascade Mountains. Wenatchee Wenatchee sits at the confluence of the Wenatchee and Columbia rivers. Visit the downtown National Historic District with plenty of boutiques, galleries and restaurants. The Pybus Public Market is located on the Columbia riverfront. Rent bikes at the market and cruise the 25-mile paved loop that circles the river and crosses two bridges for a beautifully scenic ride. Head into the market for local farm goods, artisanal foods, 94

restaurants and shops. Select some refreshments and either dine in or pick up a picnic to enjoy in the Wenatchee Riverfront Park. Chelan Lake Chelan is a popular summer vacation destination for Western Washingtonians looking for summer sun. The stunning lake is surrounded by orchards and vineyards. In recent years, the area has become known for wine as well. The Lake Chelan AVA is known for its unique terroir due to ice age glaciers and the “lake effect,” which creates mild temperatures with a longer growing season. There are more than 30 wineries and tasting rooms. For a unique adventure take the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan to Stehekin. This darling hamlet can only be reached by boat, helicopter or hiking. It makes a perfect day trip, or you can stay overnight. There are a lot of hikes, including the lovely Rainbow Falls. No trip here is complete without a stop at the Stehekin Pastry Company with its wide selection of delectable treats and breakfast or lunch offerings. They even have a cabin for rent. Beebe Springs Nature Area As you leave Chelan make sure to stop at the Beebe Springs Nature Area just north of the Beebe Bridge. The park overlooks the Columbia River and has 2 miles of ADA-accessible trails that weave around the marshy area where Beebe Creek flows into the Columbia River. The park is adorned with metal sculptures created by artist Virgil “Smoker”

Marchand, a member of the Lakes Band of the Colville Confederated Tribes. Dominating the park is his 3D sculpture of “The Chief ” on horseback with a feathered headdress hoisting aloft a Columbia River salmon over his head. Also look for the “Root Diggers.” His work can be found throughout the Cascade Loop. Methow Valley Before turning on Highway 153 and starting the climb over the North Cascades, stop at the little town of Pateros. There is a cute riverfront park with incredible views. You’ll want to see the art installation by Marchand, commemorating the Native peoples who originally lived on this land. Pateros is a good spot to gas up and stock up on snacks. Once you turn onto Highway 153 you will see the Cascade Mountains in the distance. The terrain will gradually change from high desert hills to wooded areas filled with Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. The first stop is the quaint artist community of Twisp. Over 100 artists call the Methow Valley home, and you can see some of their work in the art galleries of Twisp. You’ll also find live music, theater and maybe even a poetry reading on a street corner. When you head into town you will see the campus of TwispWorks, which helps local businesses get established. Stop at their Methow Valley Goods store and shop over 70 artists, makers, producers and creatives. The faux western town of Winthrop is very well done. With its wooden boardwalks you really feel like you are in the Wild West. Spend some time exploring the town. To add to the western experience, book a horseback ride or go tubing on the Methow River. Downtown offers a variety of restaurants, shops and breweries. If you want to support a hyper local, make a visit to the Old Schoolhouse Brewery. The beer is made using unfiltered North Cascades water and local hops. Local ranches supply lamb and beef for their burgers, while all dressings and sauces are made in house. The patio beer garden overlooking the river is the perfect place to enjoy this bounty. Before you leave town visit the Homestream Park, which also has sculptures by Marchand on an interpretive trail. 96

North Cascade National Park The route takes you through Mazama before climbing into the North Cascades. The Cascade Loop Travel Guide recommends the eastern approach to Washington Pass for its superior views. This portion of Highway 20 is known as the North Cascades Scenic Highway. It traverses the North Cascades National Park. You will be surrounded by glaciers (there are more than 300 in the park), jagged mountain peaks with several above 9,000 feet in elevation. Keep your eyes peeled for mountain lakes and waterfalls. Ross and Diablo look stunning, as their turquoise-colored water stands out among the forested mountains. The North Cascades National Park Visitor Center is located near Newhalem, where you can get information from park rangers about local conditions, trails and viewpoints. This park is one of the less visited in the National Park System where you can enjoy the jaw-dropping scenery of a Glacier National Park but without all the crowds. Skagit Valley Heading down from the mountains you will pass through the darling towns of Marblemount and Concrete. The terrain will now turn into rolling hills before you begin to see the acres of farmland that span the Skagit Valley, where you will finish your trip.

COMMUNITY PLANS FOR SUMMER SAMPLER ARE UNDERWAY By Jillian Chandler
T
he Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is working hard to bring back Summer Sampler to Farmin Park! After canceling last year’s event due to the pandemic, planning is underway in hopes to bring this delicious event back for the community to enjoy. As of press time, plans were still in the works for this year’s tasting event, which has been tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 24. For more than a decade, the popularity of the event continued to grow, until it was halted last summer. An event where the community can come together to sample some of Sandpoint’s finest cuisine from area restaurants and chefs, along with delicious drinks from local wineries and breweries, everyone is eager to see the event happen this year. The food and drink, atmosphere and entertainment—and of course the company of the Sandpoint community—is what truly sets this wonderful Sandpoint event apart. The Summer Sampler is the first of three fundraising events the

Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce hopes to hold this summer. The other two events include the Sandpoint Beerfest, which is currently set for Saturday, July 10, noon to 5pm, at Trinity at City Beach (for the most current information, find the event on Facebook by searching Sandpoint Beerfest); and The Scenic Half Marathon, scheduled for September 19, 2021 (ScenicHalf.com). All three of these events go to help fund the nonprofit. For those interested in participating or sponsoring the event, please reach out to the Great Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce by phone at 208.263.2161 or email info@sandpointchamber.com. Let’s hope we can kick off the summer season with the return of the Summer Sampler! Please note: If the chamber is unable to garner enough support and participation from local businesses and restaurants, this year’s Summer Sampler, unfortunately, will have to be postponed, if not canceled.
