With fall just around the corner, it reminds us of many more reasons why we enjoy living and working in this beautiful area. September typically is filled with warm days and crisp nights with many still taking advantage of the recreational opportunities our community has to offer. For families it also signals the time when kids are settling into a new school year. It is also a busy time for local sports as well. The soccer fields will be filled with kids of all ages competing each Saturday; Friday evenings people will flock to Memorial Field to see the Bulldogs; and many will be cheering on the Sandpoint High School soccer teams to what some anticipate will be state championships. But it is also a time to remember those to whom we turn our children over each day – our teachers. One thing Sandpoint is known for is the level of volunteerism in our community. There are many organizations that benefit from volunteers who are willing to give of their time and talent, but often overlooked is the need that schools have for volunteers. Whether you are able to help a young child with math skills, assist a teacher with grading papers, chaperone a field trip, or spend some special one on one time with a student who is struggling, there is always a need in our schools for additional help. As the school year progresses, we will continue to highlight the great accomplishments, both in and out of the classroom, made by the students in our community. In addition to our Bulldog Pride section in Sandpoint Living we also invite you to visit our website www.sandpointliving.com to learn more about what is going on in our schools and throughout our entire community. It also has local, state, regional and national news as well as weather information and much more!

Water Power = Faster Sports Injury Recovery

Stay in Shape and Speed Your Recovery Article provided by Cornerstone Physical Therapy

A Ignorance.

ccording to “The Sports Injury Doctor,” there is only one reason why pool workouts are not used more frequently in sports rehab:

Water provides the safest and fastest way to begin the recovery process for most sports injuries, especially those involving the ankles, knees and back. How many times have you heard from coaches, parents and health care providers, “ Stay off of that (injured body part) until the swelling goes down;” or “Just elevate and ice it for a few days.” What you may not be aware of it that the scarring process begins within 7 hours of an acute injury, which usually involves tearing of soft tissue fibers. The most common injuries involve muscles, tendons and ligaments. A “strain” is considered tearing of muscle fibers or tendons; a “sprain” is considered injury to a ligament. There are three basic categories of strain/ sprains. Type I - overstretching of the tissue, which results in small tears within the muscle belly, tendon or ligament. Type II - partial tearing, which can often be the most painful of the three and can take months and sometimes years to completely heal. And Type III - a complete rupture or tear of a muscle, tendon or ligament, often a significant amount of swelling or deformation is present in the absence of severe pain. If not properly diagnosed and rehabilitated correctly, a simple Type I strain/ sprain can lead to an early end to a sports season, chronic pain, chronic instability and premature arthritic changes in the involved joint. Because weight bearing on the involved part is often painful or unstable, the athlete is advised to “stay off of it.” Water provides the ideal environment for accelerated healing. Gentle range of motion (ROM) should begin within hours of acute injury. If delayed more than 48 hours, scar tissue can quickly over produce, leading to tightening of the joint capsule and/ or weakening of muscle fibers. Additionally, if the injured part is over stressed by load bearing, the healing tissue can re-tear, thus prolonging recovery and resulting in chronic pain and inflammation. The properties of water that accelerate the healing process include:

Buoyancy - This is one of the key features of aquatic rehab. Buoyancy decreases the load on painful, inflamed joints. It allows for movement of the rest of the body so strength, endurance and speed are not lost during the recovery process. It also allows for more normal movement patterns, such as running, while decreasing the gravitational pull. As recovery progresses, moving the athlete from deep water to shallower water is the safest way to slowly re-introduce weight bearing. Hydrostatic Pressure - Water pressure increases with depth, resulting in significantly improving blood flow and decreasing swelling. According the “the Sports Injury Bulletin,” a body in water produces a different physiological response than it does on dry land. For instance, warm water will increase the cardiovascular demand and improve respiratory function (increases heart rate and breathing rate.) That means you can keep up your cardiovascular endurance, without over stressing the injured part during the recovery process. No more “getting out of shape!” Fluid Dynamics - Water provides a unique environment for strengthening in all planes of motion with heightened proprioceptive feedback from surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments and joint surfaces. Increasing speed of movement in water directly increases the resistive push and pull without putting weight through the injured joint. An injured player can safely begin dynamic and plyometric training, such as jumping, but avoid the impact forces of landing. These forces can be 3-5x’s the bodyweight. So, go get in the Water! There are a couple pools here in Sandpoint and many experienced physical therapists that can help you quickly recover from just about any sports injury. There is endless information on the Internet, as well. Don’t be ignorant, just get wet! Here at Cornerstone Physical Therapy we have the only full size warm water pool with 4 distinct depth levels, including a deep end. Please come by anytime and check it out. Good Luck to all you Sandpoint Bulldogs this season. Have Fun!

When a child is removed from his or her home due to the parents’ behavior – whether it is abuse, neglect or abandonment – it is a frightening and confusing time. The most vulnerable in society can be lost in the shuffle of social workers, court proceedings and often afraid to express themselves. Not always able to articulate their emotions, children do not know where to turn. The good news is there is a program, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), that makes sure the children are not lost in the shuffle and that their voices are heard. The specially trained CASA volunteers serve as Guardians ad Litem and bring an unbiased point of view in helping the judicial system determine what is in the best interest of the child. Sandpoint resident Rhonda Tate started volunteering for CASA six years ago, and the experience has made a profound impact on her life. “I like to know that I have been able to provide them (the children) with something they did not already have,” said Rhonda who adds that while social workers and foster parents may come and go, a CASA worker stays with a child through the entire process providing the continuity they so desperately crave in their young lives. The volunteers’ role is multi-faceted. The ultimate goal is for a child to be reunited with his or her parents so long as the environment is safe and stable. The CASA volunteer investigates the facts to see what steps are necessary to achieve this goal. They also are active participants in court, preparing reports that are presented at each hearing. The CASA worker’s report is based on his or her personal interactions with the family and includes recommendations based on the facts and evidence they have observed. There are challenges to being a CASA volunteer, but they may not be what one thinks. “The most difficult part is knowing all the resources out there,” said Rhonda. “But that just comes with time and experience.” If there is more than one sibling, the CASA volunteer is an advocate for the entire sibling

Good News g ro u p . But they work with more than just the children. CASA volunteers become a primary resource for the entire family, including extended family. “Parents do not know what to expect,” said CASA supervisor Cherie Peak. “We help them to stay positive and help them navigate the waters.” Amber Snoddy first became involved with the organization 10 years ago. A friend encouraged her to become involved with CASA. Having never volunteered much before, she was unsure but now said the rewards are greater than she ever imagined. “The kids are always better off by the time the case is dismissed,” said Amber adding that one judge stated in open court the appreciation she had for the role that Amber and other CASA workers play in being the voice of the community. In her ten years with CASA, Amber has seen a great deal. She shared one story of an abused boy who was terrified to be present in court, but he wanted to do so to ensure his abusive father would not lie on the witness stand. In the end, the boy knew he had the protection and support of the CASA workers and he appeared in court and after all was said and done was able to go live in the safety of his mother’s home. “I was so proud of him for that,” said Amber. “It took a lot of courage.” All the volunteers agree that the judges always weigh the evidence presented by CASA. “The judges always address CASA in the courtroom,” said volunteer Loris Michael. CASA’s yearly budget is roughly $58,000, one-third of which is funded by the Supreme Court and the other two-thirds by donations. In an effort to raise awareness and funds for both Bonner County and Boundary County CASA programs, there is a fundraiser on Friday, September 13th from 4-7pm at Tango Café in the Panhandle State Bank Community Room in Sandpoint. The f undraiser,

Ponderay,

CASA office in Coeur d’ Alene, 208 4th St, Coeur d’ Alene CASA office in Sandpoint, Pioneer Square Bldg on Hwy 2 CASA’s program assistant Judy Labrie said it promises to be a fun and unique shopping experience. And the best part is those in attendance will be supporting local children in foster care. As for Cherie Peak, she has no doubt the community will come together to help CASA raise the funds it needs to continue to help children in crisis. “This community believes in collaboration and the people put their actions where their values are,” said Peak.

Winter Ridge Natural Foods Market Local, Natural and Delicious!

By Patty Hutchens

I

f you have not been to Winter Ridge Natural Foods Market in awhile, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Since April the store has been busy remodeling and expanding to provide even more of its delicious natural food and products to its growing customer base.

Previously 5500 square feet, Winter Ridge will be nearly double in size when completed in mid-September; an expansion precipitated by the demands of its customers. The store, owned by Gregg Prummer since 1997, has seen a significant increase in revenue over the last two years. From 2011 to 2012 alone, sales increased by 20 percent and experienced about the same rate of growth over the last year. “Natural foods is the largest growing sector of the grocery industry,” said store manager Vicki Reich. “People want to know more about the food they are consuming.” The produce at Winter Ridge is 99 percent organic, a certification that is strictly regulated and monitored by the USDA. But the cost of organic produce is far closer to the cost of nonorganic than people may realize. Sandpoint resident Mary-Claude Margairaz does much of her shopping at Winter Ridge. A native of Switzerland, she said that the breads baked fresh each day at Winter Ridge taste just like the European breads she loved growing up, and the cost she said is affordable. “The quality of the food is like no other,” said Mary-Claude adding that she especially enjoys the breakfast and lunch buffets. Winter Ridge’s remodel and expansion includes wider aisles, a larger deli and bakery, the addition of a fresh meat department where the meat is all natural, antibiotic and hormone free, and an espresso bar. There will be a seating area for approximately 35 to 40 customers as well as a conference room where the staff will hold classes on nutrition, cooking and informational talks on products carried in the store. Jennifer Lamb moved to North Idaho from Missouri about a year ago. She first visited Winter Ridge after a co-worker recommended it to her. She was looking for a place to shop for healthy natural foods and has been pleased with what she has found at the locally owned store. “I go there for all my organic essentials and vitamins,” said Jennifer. “The store has everything I need and the price I pay is not significantly different from that of other foods.”

Come Visit Our Newly Expanded Natural Foods Store • In-house deli and bakery • Fresh juice & smoothie bar • New meat department featuring local beef, bison, chicken and pork • Expanded organic produce section • Renowned supplements & health and beauty department • Extensive grocery items and bulk foods • Espresso service & fireplace seating area • Friendly, caring and knowledgeable staff 703 W. Lake Sandpoint, ID WinterRidgeFoods.com

Because Winter Ridge’s sole focus is on natural and organic foods and products, they are always looking for new items to carry and have access to a variety of products that other stores may not. “You never know what’s going to happen each day,” said Reich. The staff is all extremely well versed in organic and natural foods as well as supplements. “Everyone here really likes working here and it shows,” said Vicki. Winter Ridge will host its grand reopening on September 27th and 28th from 10 to 4. The store is located at 703 Lake Street in Sandpoint. Visit their website at winterridgefoods.com.

Go Tankless

To Resolve Hot Water Woes

T

he average household has enough to worry about each day -- from deciding when to start dinner to which load of laundry to wash first. The last thing anyone needs to worry about is having sufficient hot water for giving the kids baths, washing dishes, doing laundry -- or, if you’re lucky -- relaxing in a long, hot shower. This, among other reasons, is why so many homeowners are making the decision to go tankless. Rinnai tankless water heaters give homeowners the flexibility of on-demand hot water whenever they need it. Because the water is heated only as needed, there’s always enough to meet the demands of hot showers, baths, laundry and dishwashing -even if these are done simultaneously. With a traditional tank-style water heater, however, once the stored water is depleted, it can take up to 33 minutes to heat the tank again. “Today’s homeowners are realizing they don’t have to schedule their lives around their hot water anymore, and many also want to make wise long-term home improvement

investments with significant return. The decision to go tankless simply makes sense,” explains Kerri Walker, senior marketing manager at Rinnai. According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy website, tankless water heaters can be 24 to 34 percent more efficient than a traditional tank-style water heater, depending on a home’s daily hot-water demand. Some tankless units, such as those manufactured by Rinnai, allow homeowners to save up to 40 percent on energy bills because a tankless unit does not have to heat and re-heat like a traditional water tank does. “No one leaves their car on all the time, as -- among other things -- it would waste too much gas. Tankless technology is of a similar mindset. You’re using energy only when you need hot water,” adds Walker.

Profitech Hospitality Group Point of Sale - One of the Most Important Tools for a Profitable Business By Colin Anderson

T

wo thoughts almost every small business owner contemplates each day are: time is money and what’s my return on my investment. The less time a business owner is required to spend on administrative tasks, the more time they can afford on the front end, interacting with customers and ultimately making more money. Savvy business owners also look at all expenses to gauge what their return profit is for the money they’ve invested - whether it be inventory, marketing, employees, and more. One simple way to increase efficiency, return on investment, and reduce hours of back office work is through an up to date Point of Sale system, and Profitech Hospitality Group has everything you need. Profitech was started by Bob White, a North Idaho College alum who started working at The North Shore Resort before it was renamed The Coeur d’Alene Resort and eventually managed The Dugout. White began the company 13 years ago in Helena, Montana and has seen many happy clients save time and money on a POS system. Profitech recently combined forces with Mercury Payment Solutions in the Coeur d’Alene area and is able to give its customers top notch technology, up to date transaction processing and support, all while improving efficiency and each client’s bottom line.

create gift cards and loyalty programs, track promotions, monitor security, and tell which employees are generating the most revenue for the business. This ultimately breaks down to less time in the office, more time with the customer, and a more efficiently run and profitable business. “I have the opportunity to personally program each system to meet the specific needs of each business,” said DeWitt. “My goal is to show each business how to save time and money. Every business investment should have a good return on investment and that is what you get when you purchase a POS system from Profitech.” Testimonials from Profitech’s satisfied clients:

“If your system is four years or older you might be missing out on the benefits that the newer systems offer,” said POS system expert Jake DeWitt. “This includes social media advertising, mobile and online ordering, and manager rich features such as text alerts and emails of daily sales or labor costs.”

“I own a very busy drive-thru and have had my POS machine for several months now. Jake still checks on me! He is very professional and has superior people skills. I enjoy the built in time clock, daily sales texts, cancel sale and void texts. My only regret is not purchasing sooner!” - Melissa Valdovinos of Leopard Lattes in Post Falls.

“Restaurants, bars, and any quick service establishments can benefit from an integrated POS system with Mercury Payment Solutions,” said DeWitt. “24/7 customer support and gift cards are a few of the services that are included with sign up. We also offer the Berg liquor control system and video surveillance.”

“I researched about 12 point of sales system and I choose Future POS. It is very easy front and back end to use and set up. Jake and Bob with Profitech Northwest are awesome to work with. This system is very good and inexpensive. I am very happy I choose them. I have cut my miss ring up’s to nothing with this system. Great company you won’t be disappointed.” -Glenn Gatherer Owner, Nate’s New York Pizza

Will your money last? With a retirement plan it can. Having a plan and the right financial solutions can help you put a confident retirement within reach. As an Ameriprise financial advisor, I’ll work with you to define your retirement dreams. And together, we’ll create a plan that works for you — with the products and strategies that are right for your goals.

IRAs Vital to Your Future Financial Health Contact A Financial Advisor to Help Plan For Your Future

I

n today’s economic climate, saving for retirement has become essential; opening an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) or contributing to an existing IRA account is vital to Americans’ future financial health. While financial advisors recommend that people open and contribute to IRAs as early as possible, it’s never too late to begin. Not sure where to start? The first thing you need to do is to decide what kind of IRA you would like to open. Traditional IRAs are taxdeferred accounts that allow you to invest earnings in certificates of deposit (CDs), stocks, mutual funds, or money market accounts (MMAs). Because contributions are pretax, they reduce your overall taxable income. However, if you withdraw funds before age 59, you may be subject to a 10 percent tax penalty on your withdrawal. Depending on your income and whether you’re covered by a retirement plan at work, you can contribute up to $5,000 per year into a traditional IRA (up to $6,000 if you’re over 50).

A second type of IRA, the Roth IRA, is funded through after-tax income. You have to earn an income to open a Roth IRA, but anyone can open one, so long as their income falls below the maximum specified by the IRS. You can withdraw your contributions to a Roth IRA at any time. To withdraw earnings tax-free, you must be at least 59 1/2 years old and have held the account for at least five years. If you withdraw funds before then, you may face an income tax and a 10 percent penalty. If you earn less than $100,000 per year, you can convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, allowing your assets to grow taxfree. If you can’t afford to contribute to both a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA, many financial advisors recommend choosing the latter option, as Roth IRAs allow you to fund your retirement without paying extra taxes. t’s been nearly four years since Rick and Randy Evans opened their coffee roasting business in Sandpoint. But in that short time, Evans Brothers Coffee has had an incredible impact on not only the Sandpoint community, but the entire coffee industry.

Evans Brothers has gained a first rate reputation regionally and is now pushing to become more of a national brand. “We are working on updating our branding and changing some of our packaging,” said Rick. “We want to be featured in the best cafés in the country.”

In January they were honored at the Good Food Awards in San Francisco where they were selected as a winner in the coffee category for their Organic Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Birhanu. The Good Food Awards is an event that recognizes those who push their industries towards craftsmanship and sustainability while at the same time enhancing the agricultural landscape and contribute to building strong communities.

It is important to both Rick and Randy to not only grow the business, but to also maintain the quality that has helped them be so successful in the last few years. They currently are the featured coffee in many Sandpoint restaurants, and also have contracts in Boise and two in Seattle with another soon to come on board.

In recognition of their detail to quality coffee, Evans Brothers was recently awarded the contract for Schweitzer Mountain Resort. The resort will now exclusively carry Evans Brothers Coffee in its lodges and restaurants, an honor held for many years by a Seattle coffee company. “It was very gratifying to get their business,” said Rick Evans of being chosen by Schweitzer. “For us personally it really was a matter of coming full circle because Schweitzer is the main reason we moved here.” The two recall the moment they made the decision to open the business. It was while riding chair 6 at Schweitzer Mountain. In addition, all of their coffee blends are dedicated to Schweitzer ski runs including Organic Big Timber, Organic Chair 6 Breakfast Blend, Headwall Espresso Blend, and Organic Siberia Dark Blend.

open daily live entertainment fridays & saturdays from 7pm

Recently their coffee was featured at the James Beard House Restaurant in New York City when Spokane chef Jeremy Hansen had been invited to prepare a special dinner at the famous restaurant. “He wanted to feature our coffee, even with all the roasters in the Spokane area, he chose us,” said Rick. “In the culinary world it’s a huge honor to be featured at the James Beard House.” Part of their emphasis on quality control involves cupping sessions that they hold several times each week. Cupping is a specific way that industry professionals taste, analyze and grade different beans for quality, much like that of how vintners test their wines. “It involves the evaluation of roast profiles, blend development and is one way we select our coffees that we carry,” said Rick. Each Friday the cupping sessions are open to the public. They are held at Evans Brothers at noon and do require an advanced reservation. For more information call them at 265.5553 or stop in at 524 Church Street in Sandpoint.

Cover Story

t was approximately eight years ago when Lindy Lewis’ world began to fall apart. In her mid-30s at the time, she was recently divorced and raising her three young children. A physically active person, Lindy also worked in a high paced corporate world, having been employed for ten years in public relations presenting Broadway shows in Spokane. Following her divorce, she moved back to her hometown of Sandpoint and worked in the real estate division at the Idaho Club – the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course in Sandpoint. But it was not long before her health began to decline. She found herself struggling with fatigue, what she describes as a cognitive fog, and noticed her left foot was dragging. She researched her symptoms and had an idea of what they may indicate. When she visited the doctor, her fear was confirmed – Lindy had multiple sclerosis. And so she began a journey that has led her to where she is today. It is a journey that has been met with many obstacles, but looking back Lindy is pleased with where the road has led “MS has been a gift to my health ironically forcing me to start living in the present and expand my spiritual awareness as I do things that bring joy to me,” said Lindy. “I have rediscovered peace of mind one can find in nature and the joy in connecting to my kids, nieces, and nephews.”

made modifications that made less demands on my body and energy.” It was then that her non-profit, Inspiring Grace, was born. Inspiring Grace is a program that helps teach grace in the mind and body to the younger members of the community in the classroom setting during the school day.

Lindy Lewis shares with teens her journey to self acceptance By Patty Hutchens

In the beginning, Lindy relied solely on her medication to help her manage her disease, but otherwise carried on with life as usual. “I stuck it (the disease) on a shelf and just kept going,” she said of her diagnosis. But 18 months after her initial diagnosis, the doctors found more lesions on the thoracic portion of her vertebrae. “That is the part that controls mobility and the lower part of your body,” said Lindy. “It was my wake up call.” She took a threemonth leave of absence from her job and began focusing on her health. She took up yoga and while she initially found it difficult to calm her mind and slow down, as time progressed she welcomed the opportunity that yoga gave her to meditate, relax and reduce her stress. From there she took up Pilates and became certified to teach both. The life skills she learned and the feeling she had from her now found way of life was something she wanted to share with the younger generation. She started volunteering her time during the

after school hours to teach yoga at Sandpoint High School. While there was a great interest among the students, Lindy quickly realized that when kids are pulled in many different directions – sports, homework, clubs, work and more - the first activity they give up is the self-nurturing piece. The result was diminished attendance at her class. And then during one of her sessions, she injured herself and ended up with a herniated disc. “This second physical condition finally penetrated my iron will,” said Lindy. “ I had to take a step back and make more changes. In order to continue working with teens, I

For the past two years Inspiring Grace volunteers, whom Lindy refers to as compassionists, have visited Sandpoint High School, the Forrest Bird Charter School and Clark Fork High School to share their knowledge on how to best manage the trials of every day life. “I am really called to give kids the tools of support and balancing as they meet life’s challenges,” said Lindy, who adds that the biggest part of her journey over the past eight years has been self-acceptance. “There are so many external measures that kids put on themselves.” The first year 25 classes were taught with it nearly tripling to 70 classes in its second year. A trend that Lindy hopes will only increase. With additional funding it is her hope that she can expand to not only the elementary school level, but also to the Coeur d’Alene schools as well. Inspiring Grace instructors and guest speakers are community members who have the knowledge, whether it is through yoga, empowerment workshops, or nutrition, to help teens open up to new ways of thinking. The classes are more than just instructional; they seek to engage the student in the very practice they are teaching. The goal is to expand the teens’ abilities to reduce stress through relaxation and to be able to live in a mindset that is free of judgment, expectations and competition. And that’s not easy to do when we live in a world filled with expectation at home, school, work or society in general. “Our students learn to center themselves and to recognize the profound impact of their own actions as they ripple out in the world,” said Lindy. For Sandpoint High School teacher Erin Roos, Inspiring Grace sessions have been a great addition to her curriculum. “Inspiring Grace has been a gift to my students,” said Roos. “This organization makes possible the opportunity for talented community members to work directly with our students in the classroom. The mentors are able to share with students their expertise and how to grow the personal tools necessary for a successful life.” Roos’ colleague Adam Tajan agrees. “Inspiring Grace has helped expose my

Cover Story students to a variety of topics related to health and wellness,” said Tajan. “From the physical and spiritual benefits of yoga to the importance of understanding what it really means to eat healthy, they cover it all.” When asked why she targets the younger generation, Lindy points out that the coping mechanisms children learn at a young age will help them with all the challenges they will meet as they go through life. The younger that the teens learn these skills, the easier life will be to manage. The stress management tools help with the

for the sessions they teach at the schools. Lindy said her disease is currently in a holding pattern. She has one three-hour treatment per month, which is instrumental in managing the multiple sclerosis. But she said it is not necessarily just the western treatment or the concentration on yoga and other stress reducers that keep her healthy. “It’s a combination of both,” she said. In fact her approach to managing her health was recognized by the drug company that manufactures the medication Lindy takes. At the request of the company, Lindy speaks

While the students do not pay for the classes, one thing that Inspiring Grace asks in return from them is to perform an act of kindness for another person, something which Lindy refers to as a ripple indicating the hope that one act of kindness will have a ripple effect to others. At the end of each class the students take a ripple card and pledge to perform the activity on it. Some examples include “Drop a kind note to someone who matters in your life;” “Donate a used book to the library;” “Use chalk to write a nice message on the

daily drama that goes with being a teenager, explains Lindy. “Kids do a lot of comparing of themselves with others, and we are trying to teach them to accept themselves.” Lindy attributes much of her can do spirit and attitude to her upbringing and is grateful to her parents, long time Sandpoint residents Jerry and Pat Lewis. But she said she never expected when she was younger she would face the obstacles she has and wishes that she had learned these coping mechanisms at a young age. “My life looks completely different as I thought it would when I was a child.” Lindy’s work is strictly voluntary but she does have three employees for Inspiring Grace – a bookkeeper, public relations representative and a curriculum coordinator. The compassionists receive an honorarium

to others who are diagnosed with the disease and inspires them to participate in their own healing journey. Her story is featured on a website: www.msinpiration.com and her hope is that more and more people will see that they too can take back control of their life. “Life is a journey and I can participate,” said Lindy. “ I am going to continue to take every effort to slow down and take care of not only my body, but also to take care of and nurture my spirit.” So far the funding for Inspiring Grace, which is a registered 50(c)(3) corporation, has come from private donations. Lindy said she hopes to eventually find a grant writer to help her expand her reach to children throughout North Idaho.

sidewalk;” and “Be kind to your own body and eat a healthy snack.” And the students also come up with ideas for future cards. “One child said wear a bike helmet,” said Lindy. In the end, it all about giving students the tools they need to become successful and meet life’s challenges with a sense of empowerment. “When you learn self-acceptance, you are naturally kinder to people,” said Lindy. “We are simply planting seeds for the kids’ own wellness.” To learn more about Inspiring Grace, visit their Facebook page or their website: inspiringgrace.org.

Coach Satini Puailoa Sits Down with Sandpoint Living By Patty Hutchens

I

f you drove past Sandpoint High School during the latter part of August, it is likely you witnessed a sea of red and white jerseys performing drills, running plays, and working hard. But don’t think that just because football practice officially started on August 19 that the players have just started to train. For many, including the coaches, they have never taken a break. The young men’s commitment to off-season training is a testament to the motivation that Coach Satini Puailoa instills in his players. Coach Puailoa has been a head football coach for 20 years, 11 of which have been at Sandpoint High School. He has brought the Bulldogs to the playoffs several times – ’95,’97, and each year from 1999 to 2002. He has a career record of 101-61 and a winning record of 57-41 at Sandpoint High School. He returned to the head coaching position last year and finished the season at 1-8. But records do not reflect the whole story. In his first year of rebuilding, Coach Puailoa credits the team with never giving up. “Last year was not easy. Those guys stuck it out and battled until the last go around,” said Puailoa adding that the teams they played were unusual in that they were heavily dominated with senior players. While he said that the team is still in the rebuilding process, Coach Puailoa

34   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

emphasized that his bulldogs are a lot further along this year than last year at this time. He attributes that to the countless hours the players have spent in the weight room during the off season and summer months. And he should know because he has been there as well. “We have progressed on both sides of the ball,” said Puailoa pointing out that it was not until the last couple of games last season did the kids start to click as a team. With the coaching staff at the varsity level remaining virtually the same as last year, Coach Puailoa said it will definitely add to the unity of the team. “It’s our second year working together. That’s a plus,” said Puailoa. “The coaching staff is like marriage and teams are like family. The more time you spend together the closer you become.” When asked what he thought the biggest obstacle will be to for the team, Puailoa replied that it was having the players make that leap of faith that all the work they have put in will show up on the field. “The reality is that the team is in a rebuilding process and has been down for awhile. We need to overcome that and build a winning atmosphere,” said Coach.

The number of kids turning out for football has dramatically increased over the last couple of years; and as the players work hard to earn a spot, it is evident that these young men have what it takes. “As the stakes have risen, we have seen the cream rise to the top,” said Coach Puailoa. With 12 starters and 23 lettermen returning to the roster, Coach Puailoa has many seniors who hope to finish out their years at Sandpoint High School with a winning season. Senior Chase Rodriguez brings a great deal of talent, and height, to the field at wide receiver and defensive back. Rodriguez was all league for the last two years. Senior Cody Millard will bring a great deal of speed to the backfield as full back as will running back Dean Knaggs. Coach Puailoa is relying upon junior Nate Loutzenhieser to lead the team

at quarterback. The Bulldogs are eager for the return of senior Carson Paull who plays both running back and defensive back. Paull suffered an injury last year and was unable to play, but he was fully committed to doing what he could to get healthy and gain a starting spot on the roster, and his hard work paid off. While there are a great number of players who possess the skill and determination to be successful, Puailoa recognizes that the process does not happen overnight. He explains that to develop the kids, it is important to not rush the process. “You have to let them grow into it. They may be physically ready, but you have to see how it all plays out.”

Perhaps one of the reasons Coach Puailoa has been so successful in the past is his focus on building a bond among the players both on and off the field. In mid-August the varsity players, including a handful of sophomores who will be suiting up for varsity, attended team camp. But the focus was not on football. It was on problem solving and building trust and unity among the young men. It is those character traits that will translate to success on the field. “Probably the most important thing you do in any endeavor where you put people together is to make sure everyone is on the same page. If you do everything right, they are sure to be successful,” said Puailoa. “We get the kids to buy into each other.” By putting the athletes into competitive and problem solving situations such as what took place at the August camp, Coach Puailoa said it is easier to determine the weaknesses among the teammates. “Then you have

teachable moments,” he said. The focus of the retreat, which was held at Camp Lutherhaven, was on doing what it takes to be a good teammate. “The real test of a team is in the locker room,” said Puailoa. “If you are there to help the team, then you are readily accepted.” According to Puailoa, the range of emotions that the teammates experience with one another is at both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in between. “It is the greatest laboratory of human emotion,” he said adding that if one person is disengaged it can ruin the whole experience for everyone. “That’s why we went to this camp. To create bonds and friendships that will last a lifetime.” When asked what he enjoys most about coaching football, Coach Puailoa responded that he, like many of the other coaches who came out of retirement to assist him, do it because they are educators. Participating in the development of the young men is the reason Coach Puailoa went into teaching in the first place. “Football is just a (teaching) tool, but it is such a good one because it embodies body, mind and spirit,” said Coach. He and his coaching staff work hard to make sure that the athletes excel in the classroom as well. They are constantly checking the students’ grades and guiding them to get the help they need if necessary. “It is another set of eyes that shine light on them and teach them to prioritize. We stress academics first and then come training and practice.” The players who are attracted to the sport of football are typically high risk takers, and Coach Puailoa said it is a privilege to be able to teach and guide them during these important years in their lives.

And that process does not stop during the off season or summer months. On any given day after school or during break, Coach can be found in the weight room, encouraging, instructing and motivating kids. His door is always open for not only students but their parents as well. He recognizes that high school sports may not always be fair, but that is a good life lesson for the kids. “In youth sports everyone receives a trophy or a ribbon. That is great at the lower level, but it all changes in high school,” said Puailoa. “You only get what you earn.” For that reason he does what he can to encourage kids to work hard year round. “We are always fighting for the underdog. We teach the kids who may not be as good to work hard and fight for a position.” For some kids Coach Puailoa and his staff may be the only adult mentors they have, and Coach cares about these kids as if they were his own. He wishes he had been able to have more time with last year’s seniors. “Everything we do from here on out will be on their (last year’s seniors) shoulders,” said Coach. “They had to bear the burden of the beginning of the rebuilding process, and it will get easier now for each class.” Coach Puailoa’s enthusiasm is contagious, and he has a way of making kids feel good about themselves, no matter what the situation. And while he said the whole high school football experience is about the journey, he knows that the kids’ hard work will pay off. “The true test will be the score board on Friday night.”

Danae Rokstad

Former Sandpoint Cheerleader Now Cheering for the Seahawks By Patty Hutchens

D

anae Rokstad has never known a life that did not include dancing or cheerleading. “I don’t even remember my first dance lessons,” said the 23-year-old former captain of the Sandpoint High School cheerleading squad. “My mom said I started classes at the age of two.” Living in Clarkston, Washington at the time, Danae started out tap dancing. She recalls that after each class she would go home and her mom, Donna, would have her repeat her routine from class ten times. “She wanted to make sure I memorized it,” said Danae. “And I guess that really paid off!” Paid off may be a bit of an understatement. Danae recently made her debut as an NFL cheerleader with the Seattle Seahawks as a Sea Gal. It has been a journey that has taken a lot of hard work and discipline, but as she stepped onto the field during the Seahawk’s first preseason game against Denver, she knew it was one that was well worth it.

“It was like an out of body experience,” explained Danae. Danae’s family moved to Sandpoint when she was 9 years old and from then until the age of 16 she danced at Studio 1 with Laurie Buck as her coach. “She was phenomenal,” said Danae of the woman who taught her so much. She did both jazz and ballet as well as some hip hop and lyrical dance. Then, as a sophomore at Sandpoint High School, she made the varsity cheer squad and stopped dancing. She went onto the University of Montana in Missoula where she was a cheerleader her freshman year and then went on to be on the dance team the following years and served as captain last year. But it has always been a goal of Danae’s to be an NFL or NBA cheerleader. “She researched online all the different dance teams for the NFL and NBA,” said Donna. “Seattle had the style that Danae liked the best.” So when Sherri Thompson, the coach of the Seahawk’s Sea Gals, contacted the University of Montana dance coach and encouraged her to have her senior dance team members audition, Danae was intrigued. “Sherri was familiar with our program,” said Danae. Danae’s decision to audition for the Sea Gals was made six days before tryouts began. “I did not have time to even order anything to wear,” said Danae. So while Donna drove her to Seattle, Danae worked on making her own costumes. “I bedazzled all my tops,” she said of the art of fastening jeweled studs to her clothing. “It’s something we have always done,” said Donna of the dance, cheer and pageant competitions Danae has taken part in over the years. “We create things with what we have.”

The first weekend of Sea Gal auditions there were approximately 200 young women. The audition consisted of a one-minute freestyle dance with the women performing in groups of three. “I had so much choreography in my head from dancing in Montana, so I took some of the routines and pieced them together,” said Danae. After making the first cut, Danae and the others were taught a routine which would be part of their audition the following weekend. For Danae it was a busy time as she was not only learning the routine but was in the middle of finals as well. The following weekend she auditioned and learned that she had advanced to the final round of competition which took place the following weekend. It was during the finals that the returning Sea Gals joined the remaining dancers for tryouts. It was a full weekend of learning routines, practicing, and culminating with performances taking place Sunday evening when they all performed the finals routine, a kick routing and a free-style. And then it was

time to learn who made it and who didn’t. “Going into the finals, there were about 60 of us,” said Danae. The squad typically has had anywhere from 24 to 32 members but this time the judges chose 34 young women. Twelve of the women are new to the squad and Danae said her name was not called until towards the end. “I did not think I would make it because there were some of the returning girls whose name had not yet been called,” she said. “It is literally the most nervous I have ever been.” Danae moved to Seattle in early May and has been practicing with the Sea Gals two nights a week from 6 pm to as late as midnight. She works at a restaurant and spends her spare time working out and practicing. But the twice a week sessions are not a typical practice. “It’s unlike anything I have ever done,” said Danae. “Practice is not practice. It’s a time to show you have done your homework and you come prepared.” The women, who range in age from 18 to 36 years old, meet throughout the week in small groups to work on routines. “People have no idea how much time we put in.” One of the women is in her tenth year as a Sea Gal, and Danae said she intends to do this for as long as she can also. “I got chills when I walked out onto the field (at the first game),” said Danae. “I was instantly reminded of why I am doing this.” While the Sea Gals do not travel to away games, they will travel to any playoff games and of course, the Super Bowl. “And we will go because we will win,” she said confidently. The women also sign up for appearances throughout the week. There are several

opportunities for autograph sessions and interacting with the fans. Danae loves to perform and feels blessed to be able to do so at the level she is today. “And I get paid to do what I love!” she said. Her dad Jeff is a diehard Seahawks fan. “It is exciting that Danae is doing this and the fact that she is doing it for my favorite team is even better,” said Jeff. Danae is grateful for his support and the support of her mom Donna. “My mom came with me to every tryout and has been so supportive throughout my life,” said Danae. A former aerobics instructor who also enjoyed classes in modern dance, Donna has shared her love of dance with Danae. “We have put miles and miles on the car,” said Donna who adds that she feels very fortunate that she has been able to be there for Danae for all the important moments. As for the Seahawks, Danae said she is blessed to be affiliated with such a great organization. “I am so fortunate to be cheering for a team that has such phenomenal fans,” said Danae. And the fact that the Seahawks are winning makes it a lot of fun too. “It’s the perfect time to come in.” Reflecting on the years of travel, dance recitals, cheer competition, and pageants that have helped her daughter prepare for the performances she is doing today, Donna would not change a thing. “Danae is living her dream,” said Donna. “And when your child is living their dream, what more can a parent ask for.”

e are looking forward to kicking off another school year in the Lake Pend Oreille School District! We have many exciting changes on the horizon that will result in continued powerful teaching and learning for our students. Over the summer many of our teachers were immersed in professional development related to the new Idaho Core Standards, integration of technology to enhance student learning, and research based innovative teaching practice.

While the new Idaho Core Standards will prove to be a challenging transition for our staff and students, the changes will be worth the effort. The new standards are far more rigorous than the current standards and will engage students in more writing, development of higher level thinking skills, and application of skills to real world problem solving. If you have questions or concerns about the new standards, please contact the classroom teacher, building principal, or district administration. We are confident the standards will push the learning to new levels. During the summer months we continued to work on ways to make our schools safer. Over the last several months we have improved our communication pathways with local emergency personnel by moving to a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) system for our phones. This is a great improvement over our old system and will allow for quicker response time in the case of emergency situations. We are also installing lock down notification systems in all of our schools. When visiting our schools, please make sure

to check in at the main office and get a visitor badge. In August approximately 35 teachers received three days of training in the area of technology integration. This kicks off phase one of a major initiative to utilize iPads as a powerful teaching and learning tool in our classrooms. Use of this technology will expand the scope of educational opportunities outside of the confines of the classroom. We know that technology is having an impressive impact on career options after high school. We are committed to evolving our practice to better meet the demands our students will face as they move on. Please contact the Lake Pend Oreille School District Office if you would like to visit one of our model technology classrooms. I am confident you will see this technology used in such a way to motivate, inspire, and challenge our students to new levels of learning. Over the past year, I have learned many things about the area in which we live. I am most proud of the fact that we get such tremendous support from our community. This confidence is not something we take lightly. We will work hard to continue to build on the things that will ensure college and/or career readiness for our students upon graduation. We continue to be one of the top performing school districts in the state of Idaho. We strive to become one of the top districts in the nation!

Music & Accessory Trends For Active Women Finding the Right Fit Could Help Increase Motivation

M

usic and exercise have always complemented one another well, and there are good reasons why. Recent fitness trends and research indicate there are real, quantifiable benefits to listening to music while working out. Regardless of how you work out, music and how you get it, seems to be a musthave to complement your exercise routine. According to Costas Karageorghis, deputy head of research at the School of Sport and Education at Brunel University in London, music at the right tempo can increase

motivation and lower the perception of physical exertion. A study published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology found that treadmill walkers showed more endurance when listening to high-tempo music. Unfortunately, in the marketplace today, women often find few headphone products that really are designed for their needs. For today’s active woman, not only must you have the right playlist, but you also need to find a headphone that matches who you are as a person. Finding the right headphones

can be challenging, but consider these tips: 1. Comfort is critical. When wearing headphones for hours on end, it’s important to have a comfortable product that sits nicely in or around your ear. Test what the market has to offer to find a set that’s both secure and comfy. 2. Find the right fit. Most headphones are made in standard sizes. But for many women, they’ve found this to be challenging. Companies have recently introduced headphones just for women, September 2013 | Sandpoint Living Local   41

variety to every aspect of your workout. 4. Make them fun. Music is fun and gets you going, so make sure your headphones reflect your energy. Consider the color and look to match your personality. 5. Never compromise quality for price. Five-dollar earbuds won’t produce the same quality of sound and likely won’t last long. To stay motivated, invest in a quality-designed product known for its

craftsmanship. Don’t turn to overnight sensations. Go with companies that have been in the business for decades. To learn more about finding the right headphones for today’s active women, visitwww.koss.com.

Choosing Headphones How and where you plan on using your headphone will have a huge impact on determining the right headphone for you. Where will you use your headphone? At home, on-the-go, in the car, on a plane, at the gym? These are just a few examples where you’ll spot people plugging into their favorite recordings, games, performances and broadcasts. And the list goes on. After you have determined how you’ll use your headphones, you need to select the type of headphone that is right for you.

Back to School Treat

How to Prep a Fun Treat For School

S

ome parents look forward to the back-to-school rush, handling it like the school-shopping, scheduling pros they are. Even planning school snacks is part of the agenda. When it comes to school snacks, one easy place to start is watermelon. Watermelon is 92 percent water, meaning those dribbling, sweet juices are hydrating as well as delicious. According to registered dietitian and author of “Eat Your Way to Happiness” Elizabeth Somers, the tasty fruit is also low in or free of cholesterol, fat and sodium. What’s more, eating watermelon increases free arginine, which helps maintain cardiovascular function.

QUICK TIP

Resources like the National Watermelon Promotion Board also list other health benefits, such as a positive impact on immune systems. The juicy fruit is loaded with vitamins that enhance the infectionfighting capacity of white blood cells and help immune systems produce more antibodies. Basically, watermelon is Mother Nature’s perfectly engineered snack. By incorporating it into breakfasts before a long day of school,

Measure your body mass index, or BMI, and talk to your doctor about the results to get on track to a healthier you!

Your Weight Matters

Take the Pledge to Talk to a Healthcare Provider

W

ould you lose even that small amount of weight if you knew it might improve your health and reduce your risk of certain diseases?

Well, experts say it’s true. And with an estimated 72 million people in the U.S. affected by obesity, and nearly one out of three affected by excess weight, a new campaign called “Your Weight Matters” aims to do something a bit novel -- without haranguing anyone -- when it comes to drawing attention to how vulnerable such individuals are to diseases like diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea. “The point is to prompt a conversation about weight between patients and their healthcare providers,” explains Joe Nadglowski, president and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), which developed the campaign. “Right now, unfortunately such regular conversations rarely occur.” More specifically, the OAC is encouraging individuals to measure their weight and take the Campaign Challenge by making an online pledge to talk to their healthcare provider about the results. The

44   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

campaign’s website (www.YourWeightMatters.org) makes the first part of that easy by including a calculator for measuring body mass index, or BMI, which is found by dividing your weight by your height squared. That number places you in one of the four main categories healthcare professionals use when assessing weight -- “normal,” “overweight,” “obesity,” and “severe obesity” -- with a detailed description included to better understand the ramifications of each. Besides all that, what do you actually get by taking the pledge? Well, first, a free toolkit replete with useful information on things like proper nutrition, emotional issues, wellness tips and weight-loss options and their benefits. And second -- and this may be the neatest part, given how intimidating that first healthcare provider-patient conversation can sometimes be -- sample questions for you to actually pose during your appointment.

Skin Tips for Youthful Skin at Night

I

n the morning, you might cleanse, tone and moisturize. But your nighttime skin care routine requires more than just a quick swipe with a washcloth. In fact, your skin needs additional TLC before bedtime.

During the day, environmental factors are battling against our skin and breaking down the structural components which keep our skin tight and firm. Elastin, which is one of these components, is primarily composed of cross-linked fibers to form a durable, resilient web. In facial skin, this elastin web helps to keep skin flexible but tight, providing a bounce-back reaction to its normal shape as it stretches to accommodate normal activities like talking.

$35 ($40 value)

As skin ages, the natural cross-linking of elastin fibers is reduced. At night, while you sleep, the skin works to repair and restore its structural components, and actually “opens up” to allow creams and serums to absorb more readily. You can get the most bang for your buck, then, by applying products with powerful anti-aging ingredients before bed. “It’s important to establish a nighttime skincare regimen to restore skin’s defenses and replenish essential moisture,” explains nutritionist Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD. She adds that the skin can lose moisture during sleep, making hydrating ingredients especially important. To help skin restore itself at night, women should adopt a nighttime skin care routine that includes an exfoliating cleanser, a serum and a moisturizing cream created for evening use. Sass recommends applying a nighttime serum containing beneficial and robust ingredients such as DDF Restoring Night Serum (www.ddfskincare.com). This nighttime serum contains an exclusive turmeric complex that strengthens the moisture barrier and drenches the skin with essential hydration to allow the natural cross linking of elastin, helping to repair the look of deep wrinkles for visible results in just two weeks. Women who used DDF Restoring Night Serum saw noticeable improvements. After four weeks of use, the skin’s surface structure doubled in strength, significantly minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “The secret to radiant, firm and more youthful-looking skin is a skincare diet rich in robust ingredients,” says Sass.

ccidental falls make up the majority of hospital visits for seniors living alone. Despite the healthy desire to be independent and self-reliant, living alone presents challenges for older adults or those losing their mobility.

Problem: Senior falls.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, nine out of ten Americans over age 60 want to stay independent and live in their own home. But over 45 percent of them suffer from one or more chronic illnesses, and 33 percent fall at least once throughout the year.

The bathroom is particularly hazardous -- one-third of seniors suffer falls in the bathroom -- due to unforgiving surfaces and tasks like getting in and out of the tub. Look into showers tailored around the specific needs of older adults, such as the walk-in shower from Safe Step WalkIn Tub Co. Senior-friendly features like a foldable chair and hand-held shower wand will make showering easy and relaxing once more. See more at www.safesteptub. com/living.

Simple tasks become exponentially harder for handicapped adults or senior citizens living alone who may not have full range of motion, sharp eyesight or strong bones. But that doesn’t mean older adults can’t live independently by themselves -- they must simply be aware of their limitations.

Consider the following solutions to common problems experienced by single seniors. Problem: Transportation struggles. Solution: There are options, but they take collaboration and planning. Seniors can run errands using public transportation, carpools or walking in small groups. Gather friends and plan shopping trips in advance so neighbors, church groups or local Bridge clubs can participate and share rides. Offer to contribute gas money if you don’t have a car or valid license.

46   Sandpoint Living Local | www.sandpointliving.com

Solution: Protect yourself against falls by installing safety supports and grab bars throughout the house, paying special attention to the kitchen, stairs and bathroom.

Problem: depression.

Feelings

of

isolation

or

Solution: As a senior, your network often grows smaller as you age, but isolation can be just as detrimental as smoking or obesity. Research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discovered that people with strong relationships and social connections live longer than those without. Get involved in activities like group exercise, pinochle club, bridge tournaments, dance lessons, volunteer efforts or anything that makes you interact with others. Host play dates for local friends and their pets, or round up fellow readers for a book club.

Boomers Contributing To Workforce Longer

R

etirement no longer means lazy days gardening or playing chess in parks. In fact in one survey of Americans aged 50 or over, only one-third planned to retire before 65. One-fourth of the survey’s respondents did not know when or whether they would retire. Adults turning 60 are the fastest-growing segment of the American population. Boomers will stay healthier and live longer than any previous generation. Some boomers cannot retire due to poor savings, increased living costs and medical expenses. Other boomers wish to remain involved in their communities. AARP surveyed 1,500 workers ages 45 to 74. Eighty-four percent said that they would continue working even if they achieved enough financial security to last their lifetime. An aging workforce does not mean a lesser workforce. In fact, studies suggest that older workers prove as competent as younger employees. Aging boomers are especially suited for service and knowledge-based jobs, where they can draw from considerable experience. But the working world does change, and adult workers need continuing education

to stay competitive. For this reason, some companies now offer Lifelong Learning Accounts (LiLAs), which can help employees fund extended education. LiLAs work like 401(k)s. Employees contribute a set amount of money from their paycheck, and employers match that contribution. But instead of using that money for retirement, workers use their LiLA accounts to pay for education and training. IBM already offers a similar system, “learning accounts.” An organization called the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning has piloted LiLA programs in Chicago, northeast Indiana and San Francisco. New programs are being launched in various sites across the country. A new San Francisco program, in partnership with the Jewish Vocational Service, is targeting mature workers to help expand career opportunities during their “retirement” years. Higher education can help the boomer generation boost the American workforce for years to come. Congress is considering national legislation that would provide tax credits for employer and employee contributions into LiLAs. For more information, www.lifelonglearningaccounts.org.

Get Weekend Out ofGetaway Town

Weekend Getaway

Seattle - Adventure Is Just a Short Drive Away Article by Colin Anderson

E

asily the largest city in the northwest, Seattle has so much to do it would be hard to tackle even a fraction of it in a long weekend. But let’s try anyway. About a four and a half hour drive from Coeur d’Alene, the best part of the journey is when almost instantly the landscape turns from dry desert to the towering mountains of the cascades. As you descend down Snoqualmie Pass, you’re greeted with huge peaks, forests and waterfalls trickling down the mountainside. As you get closer to downtown, it’s easy to see why it’s called the Emerald City as Seattle is almost always green. The weather is far from perfect here with rain and clouds a real possibility every weekend out of the year, but the rain is usually light and temperatures are pretty mild year round. It rarely snows and also rarely hits the ninety degree mark. Most visitors choose to stay downtown as it’s close to all the action. Much of downtown is on a steep hill making it not the most pedestrian friendly, but you can still manage getting to the nearby sites on foot. If you’re in town during a home Seahawk football or Sounders soccer game, downtown really comes alive. Both teams boast some of the loudest crowds in professional sports. You can also enjoy a relaxing day of baseball at Safeco Field located directly across from Qwest Field where the Seahawks play. The Mariners have had their struggles of late, but sitting in an open-air

stadium with a hot dog and a beer on a sunny summer day or fall evening just can’t be beat. If college football is more your game, the University of Washington just underwent a major renovation to Husky Stadium. A stroll through campus is worth the trip as well as it features some incredible architecture and views of the surrounding landscape. Heading back downtown you are also pretty much obligated to make a stop at the World Famous Pike Place Market. Here you can watch the fish markets put on a show; tossing huge salmon across their storefront. Fresh seafood is available everyday as well as crafts, flowers, fruits and vegetables, and other regional specialties. If you’re a fan of Starbucks coffee, the original location is just down the street from the market. Families also shouldn’t pass up an opportunity to ride to the top of the iconic Space Needle for an incredible view. The Space Needle was built as the symbol of the 1962 World’s Fair and the fairgrounds are now a sweeping park with fountains, rides, museums, arenas, and plenty of places to relax. Not far away, adventure seekers can also stop in and visit REI’s flagship store which will leave your jaw dropping and your wallet a little lighter. Seattle is also especially proud of its food and nightlife culture. Many restaurants incorporate fresh catch of the day into their menus, and due to a large influx of AsianAmerican immigrants there are literally hundreds of Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Japanese eateries. As with much of the west, the popularity of craft beer is exploding in Seattle and you can find a local brew on tap just about anywhere you go. If you do choose to dine out, be prepared to pay a bit higher price than you are accustomed to.

If music is what you are looking for, you won’t be disappointed. As Seattle is the birthplace of Jimmy Hendrix and the ‘grunge’ rock scene of the 90’s, there are plenty of concert houses filled with bands hoping for their next big break. For those looking for a little more adventure, kayaking the nearby San Juan Islands or climbing the trails around Mount Rainer will get your heart rate going. If you’re interested in learning more about the local fishing culture, head into Ballard and stop by the locks. Here you can see huge boats coming and going, and if you’re lucky an up close look at Salmon making the journey inland. Many of the crab boats from Discovery’s ‘Deadliest Catch’ also use Ballard as their home base. Whether its sports, history, music, food, sites, or shopping, a trip to Seattle has a little something for everyone. Fresh food and plenty of entertainment await you. All you have to do is pick up the keys and start driving.

5 Simple Ways to Support Animal Shelters Helping Pets in Need It’s staggering to think that each year an estimated 5-7 million companion animals find their way into the care of animal shelters across the United States. Despite the best efforts of thousands of shelter workers, keeping up with the care of abandoned animals is a daunting task for even the most well-funded rescue organizations. While you may not be able to donate tons of money or time, supporting animal shelters with small contributions can make a huge difference. Here are some simple ways you can help: • Lend Your Expertise. Shelters often have limited funds to hire individuals capable of

setting up websites, writing articles for newsletters, taking pictures of available pets, landscaping the grounds or providing legal advice. Consider your skill set and how you could be a valuable resource for your local shelter. Get Social. Shelter animals come from diverse backgrounds, and socializing them can be key in making them more attractive candidates for adoption. Animal rescue organizations often need volunteers willing to dedicate a little time to playing with a cat or teaching a dog to sit. Foster a Pet. Since overcrowding in animal shelters is a constant challenge, many rescue organizations look for foster homes that may help

socialize and prepare certain pets for adoption. Contact your local shelter and see if you qualify. Turn Your Trash into Treasure. Animal shelters go through lots of food bowls and towels each year. While your old blankets and dinnerware might seem ready for a trip to the dump, they could be put to good use. Think before you toss them, because your trash could be treasure to a pet in need. Click Away. Want to help shelters acquire the essentials without dipping into your wallet? Major pet brands are harnessing the power of the Internet to help pet lovers support animal shelters without spending a dime.

A recent GiveLitter campaign saw more than 60,000 voters visiting www.givelitter.com to donate 100,000 pounds of World’s Best Cat Litter to shelters across the country. Shelters everywhere are looking for help, so see which simple act can ma ke you feel good while doing good! Keep these handy tips in mind as Pet Adoption Month draws near.

Five Ways Frugal Pet Owners Can Save For many pet owners and their pets, money is no object. But expenses like food, grooming, routine vet care, toys and kenneling can add up quickly, making it difficult for budget conscious pet owners to afford their shaggy partners.

substitution to brushing to offer fresh breath and whiter, cleaner teeth. Pet owners simply sprinkle the odorless, tasteless probiotics on their dog’s food once a day. •

According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, the average annual cost of keeping a dog exceeds $1,200. For frugal pet owners who want to provide the best possible care to their furry friends while keeping costs low, here are five tips: •

Stay on top of your dog’s medical needs. Some owners may attempt to cut costs by visiting the veterinarian less often, but this may cost more in the long run. Routine check-ups can catch minor problems before they become major health issues. If check-ups or vaccinations are out of your budget, look out for clinics, where vets will vaccinate or spay and neuter pets at reduced costs. Take care of your dog’s mouth. Teeth cleanings at the vet are very costly and can be avoided completely if pet owners choose to take oral care into their own hands by brushing their dogs’ teeth. If a dog’s teeth are healthy, oral care probiotics are a good

Buy in bulk. Buying large amounts of pet food at once can help you save, not only on the food itself, but also on the gas needed to get to the store. Just be sure to purchase a high-quality dog food, as poor nutrition can negatively affect your dog’s health. If you are unsure of which kind to buy, consult your vet. Groom your pet at home. Grooming expenses can add up quickly. Trimming nails and washing pets yourself can lead to big savings each month. Just be sure to do your research first to avoid mistakes that could be detrimental to your pet’s health. Treat common ailments yourself. You may want to talk to your vet to develop the best treatment plan for your specific pet for fleas, ticks and heartworms. This will also require a bit of research, but it will be much less expensive to order the treatment yourself than to consult a vet for each individual ailment.

Learn More About Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permits By Patty Hutchens

I

f you already have a concealed weapons permit or are interested in obtaining one, you need to be educated on the recent changes in Idaho. As of July 1st, there are now two different types of concealed weapons permits one can obtain in the state of Idaho - the standard Idaho Concealed Weapons Permit and the Idaho Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permit. The Enhanced Concealed Weapons Permit, which went into effect in Idaho on July 1, requires more extensive training such as the responsible and safe use of handguns, self defense principles and live fire training. The new enhanced permit is now recognized in 32 other states and may see reciprocity in as many as 40. According to Bonner County resident Hans Feyen, a certified NRA Range Safety Officer and instructor in both the NRA Basic Pistol and the NRA Home Firearm Safety course for the past 12 years, the new law will ensure higher safety standards and a higher level of training for those taking the certification courses. Previously the only permit available required minimal training and did not have a law component or mandate that one be trained in shooting a firearm.

training course in Nevada where he became certified to teach the NRA Personal Protection In The Home and Personal Protection Outside The Home disciplines. Kelly Harlicker, who is not only certified to teach the NRA Basic Pistol course and Personal Protection In The Home, but is only one of 60 women nationwide who is certified to teach Well Armed Women courses, teaches the enhanced certification course with Feyen. “Women learn differently,” said Harlicker. “We are sometimes intimidated by learning from men especially in an area that has typically been viewed as a men’s world.” For that reason, Harlicker became trained to teach women all aspects of gun ownership. “My goal is to educate and empower women in the use of firearms in any situation, whether it is recreational or for protection,” said Harlicker. “Over the past five years, women are the fastest growing demographics in the firearms industry.’ The Enhanced Concealed Weapons class is an eight hour course taught over a period of two days, typically Saturday and Sunday. There is a law component to the class that must be taught by a member of the Idaho

Community State Bar Association or a police officer who has at least an intermediate P.O.S.T. (Police Officer Standards and Training) certificate. “The law component goes over Idaho’s firearms laws and the use of deadly force,” said Feyen. If a person is seeking an Enhanced Concealed Weapons License, the State of Idaho requires an eight hour training course. However if a person has never had a previous NRA course, then the minimum total number of hours needed for training is 12. “This is not an Idaho law but is instead a requirement of the NRA,” said Feyen.

The course must be completed within 12 months of application for the license and class sizes are limited and fill up fast. Attendees are required to supply their own ammunition. For more information contact Hans Feyen at 208.610.4662 or Kelly Harlicker at 208.755.2617. “Our primary goal is to ensure people are properly trained, proficient, confident and that they handle their firearms in a safe manner,” said Feyen. Frequently Asked Questions: HOW WILL THE HEALTH INSURANCE MARKETPLACE THAT STARTS IN 2014 AFFECT MY MEDICARE COVERAGE? The Health Insurance Marketplace is designed to help people who don’t have any health insurance. You have health insurance through Medicare. The Marketplace won’t have any effect on your Medicare coverage. Your Medicare benefits aren’t changing. No matter how you get Medicare, whether through Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan, you’ll still have the same benefits and security you have now, and you won’t have to make any changes. The Marketplace provides new health insurance options for many Americans. If you have family and friends who don’t have health insurance, tell them to visit HealthCare.gov to learn more about their options.

Jokes & Games

On the first day of school, the children brought gifts for their teacher. The supermarket manager’s daughter brought the teacher a basket of assorted fruit. The florist’s son brought the teacher a bouquet of flowers. The candy-store owner’s daughter gave the teacher a pretty box of candy. Then the liquor-store owner’s son brought up a big, heavy box. The teacher lifted it up and noticed that it was leaking a little bit… She touched a drop of the liquid with her finger and tasted it. “Is it wine?” she guessed. “No,” the boy replied. She tasted another drop and asked, “ Champagne ?” “No,” said the little boy.............”It’s a puppy!”
