Community Cancer Services a Gift HELPING THOSE DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER AND THEIR FAMILIES Article by Patty Hutchens

hat started as a vision for Heather Gibson has turned into a blessing for hundreds of Sandpoint residents. Gibson was a young mother when diagnosed with breast cancer. She courageously fought the battle for several years before her death in 2006 at the age of 47. From the time of her diagnosis, Gibson worked tirelessly to establish a non-profit organization for cancer patients and their families. Her dream was to offer an information and support center in a non-medical setting. Gibson’s vision became a reality in October 2003 when Community Cancer Services opened its doors. The services provided are driven by the varying needs of cancer patients. And there are many. One of CCS’s most used services is gas vouchers. The financial assistance helps defray the cost clients incur in the transportation to and from medical appointments, chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Other services include a lending library, financial assistance for medical prescriptions, and support groups for cancer patients, their caregivers and children In early November Community Cancer Services, in conjunction with Ponderay Rotary, held its Fifth Annual a Night to Remember. The fundraiser is held at Tango Café and is an elegant evening of fine wine from North Idaho wineries, gourmet food prepared by Tango and auction items donated by businesses, organizations and individuals. According to Stefanie Nostdahl, President of the Board for CCS, the center was forced to cut its services by over 30% this year. Executive Director Sherri Lies stated the cut was precipitated by a combination of reduction in available grant money and the vast increase in clients, currently over 200, seeking support from CCS. Barb Perusse, founder of A Night to Remember and a member of Ponderay Rotary, said A Night to Remember was born from a need she witnessed firsthand when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She approached her fellow Rotarians who embraced her idea. “Rotary does many things at an international level, but we also do a lot to help the local community as well,” said Perusse.

The prevalence of cancer in today’s world was evident as many attending the fundraiser shared their personal stories of cancer. There was the young woman whose winery has been a regular contributor to the event who shared her story of childhood cancer. Steve Meyer, owner of Pend d’Oreille Winery and a member of A Night To Remember’s committee, shared stories of his siblings’ battles with cancer. And then there was the speech given by Carolyn Minnick, a volunteer for CCS who shared her story of cancer and her re-diagnosis. “I slipped from my role as a volunteer to that of a client overnight,” said Minnick. She went on to say one of the most cherished gifts she received from CCS was the relationships she established with not only the staff, but also others who are going through similar challenges. The support was evident even that night as Minnick tearfully shared her story. Choking up at times, Minnick was joined by CCS volunteer Anita Bruce who quietly got up from her table and joined Minnick at the microphone to help her through the speech. It is that kind of support that CCS’s clients have come to rely upon. As for Minnick, she is grateful for not only what she has received from those at CCS but that she is able to offer her support as well. She ended her speech talking about a gentleman who walked into the center recently seeking support. “He needed a hug and I was there to help,” she said. hen Eric Blomdahl and Angie Obie visited Sandpoint over a decade ago, they were drawn here because of the climate, the lake, the mountains and all the recreational activities the area has to offer. It was in late 2003, after several visits to North Idaho, when the couple moved from their native hometown of Grand Forks, ND to Sandpoint. But as charming as they found the downtown area, Angie said she quickly discovered something was missing. Many people she met did not shop locally, something which came as a surprise. She shared with Eric that she thought Sandpoint would be a perfect fit for a store similar to the gift and home décor store his mother owned in North Dakota. At the time Eric was employed in the construction industry and had a seasonal job at Schweitzer, and Angie worked as a real estate appraiser. They decided to leave their jobs and soon thereafter opened what has since become a favorite store of both locals and tourists MeadowBrook Home & Gift. The store opened on Cedar Street in July 2005 and moved to its current location in the historic Cedar Street Bridge in October 2010. At the time the bridge had just undergone a renovation and was in search of tenants. “We wanted to breathe some life into it,” said Eric. “We really see the bridge as the hub of downtown.” The store occupies roughly 4,000 square feet of the ground floor at Cedar Street Bridge and offers everything from candles, unique gifts and home décor, to exquisite domestically made fine

furniture with choices of upholstery and fine leather. The pair strives to carry U.S. made merchandise as much as possible. “We have always been focused on that especially with our furniture,” said Angie. MeadowBrook has a broad customer base and has regular customers from not only North Idaho but also throughout Washington. Out of town customers will often let them know when a group will be traveling to Sandpoint on a shopping trip, and Angie and Eric will prepare cookies and cider for the group’s arrival – the extra touch that makes their customer service superior.

But the store offers much more than beautifully made furniture and unique décor, they also offer in home interior decorating consultations. In addition, a customer can purchase a wide variety of items including a beautiful dining table as well as dishes, or a beautifully crafted bed right down to the bedding to go along with it. That variety of items, says Eric, truly makes MeadowBrook unique. Eric and Angie work hard to not only offer a wide variety of items, but they also constantly have new items in the store. One can walk through the store several times in one visit and continue to have something new catch their eye. Eric and Angie are grateful to the community for the success of their business, but also appreciate the friendships they have made. “The business has given us the opportunity to meet people we may not have otherwise,” said Angie. “A lot of our customers have become very good friends.”

hite Cross Pharmacy and Compounding has been a fixture in Bonner County since 1922. But it is much more than a pharmacy. Taking pride in providing personalized service, the store is doing its part to accommodate every customer that walks through its doors – including free in town delivery of medication, assisting a customer with pill organization, discount programs for the uninsured, compliance packaging for care facilities and customers to help organize their medications, and special orders with next day delivery.

In a world driven by technology, White Cross is providing services to make it easy to order medication anytime and anywhere. A mobile app, iRefill, allows the customer to order medication directly from their smart phone. They can also order online from White Cross’ website. Always striving to be a leader in pharmacy technology, both stores utilize the latest in robotic automation, a device which counts the pills for each prescription. The automation saves time and frees the staff to focus more on consulting with their customers.

Other than Bonner General Hospital, White Cross is the only compounding pharmacy with an in-house lab north of Coeur d’Alene. Compounding gives the pharmacist the ability to tailor medication to the patient’s needs - including customizing flavor, dosage strength or dosage forms. Founded in 1922 by W.I. Reeves, a druggist from Everett, WA, White Cross had a total of four different owners until current owner Gary deBlaquiere purchased the store in 1977. It operated solely out of Priest River until 2003 when deBlaquiere expanded to Sandpoint. It did not take long for White Cross to integrate itself into the Sandpoint community and become a supporter of events such as Jacey’s Race, a fundraiser which benefits child cancer patients in the community. In 2004, deBlaquiere’s son, Rich, graduated from Washington State University’s School of Pharmacy and joined the business. Rich took over as the majority partner of both the Priest River and Sandpoint stores in June of last year.

To assist their uninsured clients, White Cross created a discount program which is free and offers clients the best possible price on medications. They also provide what is called a brown bag check, which allows patients or their family members to bring in their medications to check for the potential of drug interactions or duplicate medications. The Cove Thrift Store Article from The Cove Thrift Store

et on board at The Cove, 521 Church, located across the street from Evans Coffee and Bizarre Bazaar and Nestled between Skeleton Key Stained Glass and Sanctuary Seconds. The Cove is a nonprofit corporation staffed with dedicated volunteers. Its purpose is to assist others in need and donate 100% of the profits back into the community of Sandpoint. Just a few of the organizations that will be donated to in the upcoming year are, Transitions in Progress, Senior Citizens Meals on Wheels Program, and Hospice of Sandpoint. Lynnie B and Nancy Sleeter came up with the concept of Treasure Hunters Cove. They were inspired to create a pirate ship theme where you enter and know you have found your Bounty! The ship is equipped with sails high above and a crow’s nest atop the center mast. The light blue walls are reminiscent of the blue skies indicating clear sailing. Lynnie B, a dedicated volunteer, lived in Sandpoint for over 15 years. She started thrift shopping as a young girl because her mother was a volunteer at her church thrift shop. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she has continued throughout the years working in many of the local thrift shops. Some may know her from The Hydra where she worked for many years as hostess. Without her knowledge of thrifting The Cove would be adrift. Our newest volunteer, Michael Hall, has been in and around the North West most of his life. Mick worked for Harold’s as a butcher for 15 years. Since his recent retirement from Litehouse, Mick has brought his expertise in sales and his knowledge of construction to the small crew. Mick is always ready to help the customers and keeps The Cove in ship shape. Melony Loman moved to Sandpoint ten years ago with her husband, Ted. She has worked as an office manager for several construction companies in the area. Her knowledge of business and her background in financial and managerial accounting is a valued asset,

necessary to keep The Cove, Inc. afloat. Melony loves to keep the little treasures within the store staged and is always changing and replacing them with new and interesting items daily. The captain is Ted Loman. Ted’s family has lived in Sandpoint since the early forties. He has been an advocate for the disabled here in Sandpoint. With a degree in communication, Ted was the producer and host of a coast to coast television and radio show for over 12 years, before relocating back to Sandpoint. He enjoys working side by side with his shipmates. While aboard The Cove, if you get bumped into Ted, just remember hisCove vision isn’t the best. What thrift store would be complete without a changing room, tongue-in-cheek respectfully dubbed the Poop Deck. “Our treasures are many and diverse,” says Ted, “including gently used clothing, shoes, and household items that are priced so they are affordable for everyone.” The Cove is well stocked with quality items including furniture. They except donations at anytime day or night through a clearly marked, green wooden donation box out front. The Cove would like to mention that they are always looking for new volunteers. eople choose a restaurant for many reasons. Some may like a particular dish that is offered, while others enjoy the atmosphere or location of a particular place. Patrons of Forty-One South, located at the south end of the Long Bridge in Sagle, are often citing both reasons for it being their restaurant of choice. Offering outdoor seating, a view of the river and mountains, and a place from which to watch breathtaking sunsets, it is a favorite of many during the warm summer months. But that same view is a perfect setting for spectacular sunsets while sitting by the restaurant’s warm cozy fireplace in the winter as well. It was just over two years ago when Cassandra Cayson purchased FortyOne South Restaurant. Since then she has successfully grown her business, continually meeting the desires of the diverse community. The latest change is an expansion of the menu to include what she refers to as comfort foods, a craving of many during the snowy winter months. Some of the newer items include pasta dishes, buffalo meatloaf, and black cod, which has increased in popularity due to the wide press it has received regarding its health benefits. Also added to the menu are a variety of appetizers including homemade soft baked pretzels and crab croquettes. But it is not only the offering of her menu items that has changed, her price point has also lowered to make it more affordable for many who want to enjoy a night out. “We want families to be able to join us for dinner whether it is after a day up at the mountain or because they just would like a night off from cooking,” said

Another feature of the popular restaurant was the addition of Shoga, a sushi restaurant located between FortyOne South and the Lodge next door. Like FortyOne South, it too offers affordable prices which start at $9 an entrée. Whether its Forty-One South or Shoga, one is not disappointed when they visit this beautiful setting. You should also have ketone-testing supplies and appropriate medications for cold and flu symptoms. “When suffering from a cough, cold or flu, it’s important for people with diabetes to treat their symptoms with medicine that doesn’t have a negative effect on their diabetes,” says Debra Spector, registered dietitian and certified nutritionist.

t is a day of celebration throughout the Christian world; a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas. And while all Christians recognize the meaning of the day, the traditional celebration will take on a very diverse look depending upon where in this world one may live. Although the decorations and shopping may begin long before Thanksgiving for some, throughout the United States Christians traditionally begin preparing for Christmas with advent. Advent begins the fourth Sunday before Christmas, falling anywhere between November 27th to December 3rd. It is a time the church prepares for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. Advent wreaths with four candles adorn the churches with a new candle being lit each Sunday in anticipation of the celebration of Christmas. Traditions, both secular and religious, are many. Visits with Santa Claus, Christmas caroling, exchange of gifts, Christmas parties and reenactments of the nativity take place at churches and Christian schools throughout the country. In England, children anticipate the arrival of Father Christmas. But they don’t mail their letters to the North Pole as do children in the United States. Instead, they place their letters into the fire in their fireplace, believing that their wishes will go up the chimney – the path they, like American children, believe that Father Christmas will enter their home bestowing upon them gifts and fulfilling their wishes. While a snowy Christmas is something many in the Northern United States look forward to, in Australia the holiday falls

during the summer months. Accordingly, much of their celebration takes place outdoors. One such celebration is called Carols by Candlelight, a time when many gather outside to sing Christmas songs and light candles in celebration. In Sweden the eldest daughter plays a significant role in the pre-Christmas celebration. December 13th, St. Lucia’s Day, marks the beginning of the Christmas season in that country. On that sacred day the eldest daughter rises early and dresses in a long white dress and a crown of leaves – a symbol of Santa Lucia, the Queen of Light. Singing Santa Lucia, a traditional Swedish song, she then wakes up the remaining family members and serves them coffee and specially made treats. For Christians in Ethiopia, one of the oldest countries in Africa, they celebrate the sacred holiday on January 7th. This is due to the fact they follow the ancient Julian calendar. In this country, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s celebration of Christ’s birth is not called Christmas but instead is referred to as Ganna. The people of Ethiopia fast the day before Ganna, rising early the next day to attend mass at 4am. Unlike many other countries that celebrate Christmas, Ganna is not marked by gift giving. Instead the holiday focuses on religious significance of the season, with feasts and games playing a large part in their tradition. The holiday season in Ethiopia does not end with Ganna. On January 19th the Christians there engage in a three day celebration known as Timkat, which commemorates the baptism of Christ. The Christmas celebration in Spain commences with the Fest of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. This is the day which Christians celebrate the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the womb of Saint Anne. In Spain there is a weeklong observance of this holy day. Places of worship and

outdoor markets are decorated with evergreens. One need not look far to find musical instruments such as tambourines, castanets, and miniature guitars for sale, adding to the lively celebrations which include singing and dancing in the streets. In Spain it is also customary for children to travel to various homes singing Christmas carols or reciting bible verses in exchange for receiving a small instrument, toy or a holiday treat. In Israel only two percent of the population is Christian, and for that reason businesses and shops are open and ironically there is little hint of a sacred celebration in this land where Jesus was born. But in Jerusalem one need only travel to that part of the Old City known as the Christian quarter to find holy celebrations of the birth of Jesus Christ. A mere six miles away is Bethlehem – the city of Jesus’ birth the streets to Manger Square are filled with tourists and security. Manger Square is outside of the Basilica of the Nativity which is believed to be the place where Jesus was born. In the end, no matter if it is Buon Natale, Froehliche Weihnachten, God Jul, or Merry Christmas, the meaning is still the same as Christians around the world comes to together to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

hristina, better known as Tina, is a hometown girl who was raised right here in Sandpoint, Idaho. Although she was born in San Diego, CA in 1986, her folks Dr. Bob and Marian Rust, moved to our beautiful little town way back in 1974. Along with her 5 brothers and 2 sisters, Tina was raised outdoors hiking, camping, skiing and playing on Lake Pend Oreille. She graduated from Sandpoint High School and played on the 1985-86 State Championship Volleyball teams. Carroll College, in Helena, offered her a chance to play volleyball at the collegiate level and complete a Bachelor of Health Sciences Degree. While in Helena, Tina welcomed her 2 oldest children, Nicole (24) and Stefan (21), into the world. In 1993, she was accepted to graduate school at Creighton University in Omaha, NE and successfully finished in the top 5% of her class, proudly achieving one of the first Doctorate of Physical Therapy degrees in the United States. Tina’s youngest two children, Samantha (18) and AJ (17) were born in Omaha as well. She then moved quickly back to the Pacific Northwest and worked for several years in the Coeur d’Alene area. Professionally, Tina helped pioneer the introduction of Aquatic Therapy to the rehabilitation community and developed the Inland Neuroscience and Spine Center in Spokane, WA with Sacred Heart and St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Hospitals.

hen Bailey Scrimsher addressed those gathered for SHS’s girls soccer on senior night, she spoke about the biggest inspiration in her life - her little brother Bradey.

Bradey, 10 years old, is a special needs child. Notwithstanding visits to specialists, including trips to the Mayo Clinic, the medical community has been unable to diagnose Bradey’s disorder. Their mother Tamara says that Bradey is not autistic but does exhibit some autistic tendencies.

When asked about Bradey’s accomplishments, the girls are eager to share that he recently learned to swim and recognizes the word Mom. Looking ahead to when Bailey goes to college next year, Darbey realizes she will likely have an increased responsibility when it comes to helping out with her brother. But where most teenagers may be self-centered, Darbey does not see an issue. “It will work out, and I will have to give up more, but really it is what it is,” she said. Bailey said that one thing that she is always amazed at is how her little brother has the ability to instantly soften people’s hearts. “And he has a great sense of humor too,” she shared. Last summer the family added a dog to their busy household. Winston, an adorable golden doodle, has since been certified as a service dog for Bradey. Since Bradey is prone to wandering off, Winston will help keep Bradey safe and alert people if Bradey strays towards danger. “He is like a shepherd,” explained Bailey. Winston’s trainer, Nick Lungu owner of I-Guard International in Spokane, has helped many children with disabilities establish an emotional connection with their service dogs. “My job is to get them on the same frequency,” explains Lungu, who adds that Winston will be Bradey’s constant companion and eventually will accompany him to school. “The two will become one.” Lungu explains that while people may become tired and have periods of time when they do not want to interact, the dog will always be a companion for Bradey and one that will most always be willing to interact with him. In fact Tamara said

that in the short time since Winston was certified, she has already noticed an improvement in Bradey’s communication skills. While the entire Scrimsher family may think it is just natural to do what they can to support Bradey, many others have learned important life lessons just by watching the way these young women handle the challenges of balancing life as a teenager and helping to care for a special needs child. In fact, many of the girls’ friends have helped care for Bradey when there has been a need, and because of the bond they have established with Bradey it has been good not only for Bradey but for Darbey and Bailey’s friends as well. Their dad Brian is proud of them, especially given the extra challenges they faced with their mom’s cancer diagnosis when they were so young. “They have adjusted well to all the challenges,” said Brian. “Timing of things is not always convenient and they have learned to be flexible.” Darbey said Bradey has taught her to be patient and flexible. “People need to know that things won’t always be handed to you,” she said. As for Bailey, she said it is important not to judge people and to learn how to incorporate struggles into your life so that you have some balance. But above all she wishes everyone could know Bradey the way she does. “He’s a cool kid,” she said proudly.

he year was 1946. Harry Truman was President of the United States, the Federal minimum wage was a mere 40 cents per hour, first class postage was 3 cents and the average price of a new vehicle was $1125.00. It was also the year that the current grandstands at Barlow Stadium at War Memorial Field were built. The grandstands have seen a lot of action in the nearly 70 years since first constructed. Today the stadium is host to Sandpoint Bulldogs football, Sandpoint Bulldogs men’s and women’s soccer, the Festival at Sandpoint, American Legion baseball, Sandpoint High School graduation, and junior tackle football. It is time to rebuild this treasure and make sure it is available for safe use for the next generations. A community group, called Friends of Memorial Field, have been working on plans to replace the existing grandstand that include many upgrades which will make it more functional. Included in the plan is a covered seating area, increased seating capacity, compliance with the Americans with Disability Act, and construction of a new entry way - all while maintaining the historic feel of the venue. But like anything, such an effort takes money. The Friends of Memorial Field has several sponsorship levels and payment plans so you too can be a contributor to this great cause. ecember in Sandpoint means more to Bulldog fans than a two week break from school. It also symbolizes the beginning of basketball season. Tyler Haynes, the head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team, said the varsity roster consists of ten full time players, and two others who will play both varsity and junior varsity. “The strength of our squad is that they are very experienced athletes,” said Coach Haynes. “Many come off the state championship soccer team or played valuable roles on the football team.” Although the team is young with nine out twelve players being juniors, the fact that they have diverse experience is definitely an asset. “They have a lot of confidence but there will be times our youth will show,” said Coach Haynes who adds that the goal is to make it to districts. Coach Haynes will look to returning varsity players, senior Nick Nelson and juniors Matthew Burgstahler and Nathan Schwartz to lead the team. Diptych paintings consist of two separate panels that hang together and work as one. “In my figurative diptych paintings, each figure has their own physical space, yet they are a couple,” says Johnston. “Their face is cropped, and viewers can imagine themselves as being in the painting. The viewer has to look to other parts of the painting to imagine a story...each individual person can create a different story for the painting.”

Awkward Wall Spaces For stairways, long hallways and between windows, Johnston recommends using a tall, narrow painting, like his Tall Tulips. “They are perfect for hanging up a staircase,” says Johnston. “You can hang the Tall Tulips at different heights following the risers up the stairs; a great look for a difficult space.” This style of painting also works well because they are bright and don’t require ideal lighting.

RECENT RULIING REDUCES CRITICAL HABITAT DESIGNATION IN NORTH IDAHO Article by Patty Hutchens

inter recreation may be looking a lot brighter for snowmobilers in Bonner County. In late November the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service reduced its recommendation by 90 percent for woodland caribou critical habitat in the Selkirk Mountains. The Service had originally recommended designating over 375,000 acres as critical habitat, but reduced its proposal to 30,010 acres, only 6029 of which are in the state of Idaho and none lying within the boundaries of Bonner County. According to Attorney John Finney the recent decision will now allow the Forest Service to move forward with the process of a winter travel plan – deciding what trails may be opened to snowmobiles. Approximately 6 years ago, a significant amount of land was closed to snowmobile traffic based on a judge’s ruling that a proper analysis needed to be conducted regarding woodland caribou. The caribou were protected pursuant to the Endangered Species Act nearly 30 years ago. Woodland Caribou are most populous among the U.S. and Canadian border, but in recent years very few have been spotted in North Idaho. Groups lobbying for an area of over 375,000 acres have worked to encourage the Forest Service to develop winter recreation plans that reduce or eliminate the use of snowmobiles in woodland caribou territory. They argue that the reduction in caribou in Idaho is largely due to the snowmobilers.

Those arguing against an expansion of critical habitat designation and in fact seeking a reduction of the designated land did so stating it would severely impact the livelihood of many. Senator Mike Crapo stated that the designation needed to be modified in order to balance the caribou’s recovery needs with recreational and human use of Idaho’s landscape. According to Geoff Smith of Sandpoint Marine, North Idaho had previously been a vacation destination for many snowmobile enthusiasts. He said the economic impact of reduced snowmobilers traveling to the area has affected many industries in recent years – and not just the snowmobile industry. He stated there was a significant reduction in business for many in the restaurant and hotel business, especially in the Priest Lake area. He is hopeful that the recent ruling will provide a much needed boost in the economy. John Finney said now that the winter travel planning process can move forward, trails should begin to open up in the winter of 2013.

The Pend Oreille Chorale and Orchestra has been working very diligently to provide the public with one of the most well loved classical music pieces of the Christmas season.
