History of Valentine’s Day SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT VALENTINE’S DAY

E

very February 14, in the United States and around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine.

Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia. The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl’s name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry. A Frenchman, Charles, Duke of Orleans is credited with writing the first Valentine card. He was captured by the English while at the battle of Agincourt in 1415. On Valentine’s Day, he sent his wife a rhyming love letter from the tower of London, where he was imprisoned. And from that single letter sent, approximately 141 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-mailing holiday only behind Christmas.

Other Interesting Valentine Day Facts: Famous people born on Valentine’s day: Jimmy Hoffa—born 1913 gangster, Merl Saunders-jammed on the keyboard with grateful dead,Raymond Teller-Magician/ comedian, Florence Henderson—Florence Henderson who played the mother on the Brady Brunch, Rob Thomas—born 1972 singer of Match Box Twenty, and Mike Bloomberg— 108th mayor of New York City and the tenth richest person in the United States with a net worth of $18 billion in 2010. Children receive 44 percent of all Valentine’s Day candy and gifts. Following them are wives/mothers with 40 percent, fathers/husbands 11 percent, grandparents 3 percent and pets 1 percent. On average, men shell out $130 each on candy, cards, jewelry, flowers and dates. That’s more than double what women commit to spending.

Valentine’s Day Jokes What did Frankenstein say to his girlfriend? “Be my valenstein!” Do skunks celebrate Valentine’s Day? Sure, they’re very scent-imental! What did the painter say to her boyfriend? “I love you with all my art!”

e

What do you call a very small valentine? A valentiny! Why did the pig give his girlfriend a box of candy? It was Valenswine’s Day! What did the cholcolate syrup say to the ice cream? “I’m sweet on you!” Why is Valentine’s Day the best day for a celebration? Because you can really party hearty!

Technology & Fishing Article by Dan Howard

Technology seems to be rocking the entire world these days. It certainly has had an impact on fishing. Unfortunately, only a minority of fishermen realize and understand the capabilities of the new high tech fishing tools. When I was young, most fishing rods/poles were made of fiberglass. Along came graphite and carbon fiber and overnight the ability to feel the bite was enhanced dramatically. Yes, fiberglass poles are still made and for some applications they are superior to the graphite poles, but if you fish lures on the bottom, you will love the increased ability to feel the bite with a graphite or carbon fiber pole. There are so many different flavors of graphite and carbon fiber poles available now it is almost impossible to keep track. Luckily for the fishermen, they have started to label the poles with the specific type of lures they recommend to use with them. Like so many of the fishing tools, they are becoming more specialized. I can tell you from personal experience that there is good reason for specialized fishing rods. There is nothing like the correct tool for the job and specialized fishing rods fish the baits they were designed for better than other rods. Reel technology has also improved dramatically in the last few years. Unfortunately the price has increased accordingly. It is not all bad though. Most new bait casting reels have improved to the point where back lashes are next to non-existent. If you fish with bait casting reels you know what a bummer a backlash can be and if you have more than one a day it can take the fun out of fishing altogether. Spinning reels are doing a better job closing the bail, providing instant hook sets with the anti-reverse feature, providing for smooth, long distance casting by using more ball bearings and drag systems are using newer high tech materials such as ceramic discs. Other improvements include the use of stronger and lighter high tech materials and reels with faster retrieve speeds. Pike and muskie like fast retrieves. A fast retrieve reel is a must have when fishing for these big fish. If you are finding that you are fussing with and cussing at your reel, spend a little money and get a reel with the new technology features. You won’t be disappointed.

Shopping for fishing line is a lot more complicated than it used to be because of the introduction of new high tech fishing lines. Fluorocarbon is one of the latest to be introduced. It is transparent like monofilament, but it does not stretch and has a smaller diameter so it sinks faster. It is advertised to be totally transparent to fish. Monofilament has a larger diameter and does stretch. It does not sink as quickly and because it stretches it is more difficult to feel subtle strikes when fishing the bottom with semislack line. Braided line also does not stretch and also has a relatively small diameter. It often comes in colors that are not transparent so it also often floats so it can be used as a strike indicator. The newest braid “Nano-fil” has a really small diameter. Currently the highest breaking strength it is available in is 12lb. Because of its small diameter it has superior casting ability, it is not uncommon to improve your casting distance by at least 20 feet just by changing to this line. There are even lines that glow in the dark which help immensely when night fishing with a black light. Fishing line is becoming a specialized “tool” just like a rod or reel. Fish finders have been improved more than any other fishing tool. The new finders have amazing capabilities and in the last 2-3 years the resolution of viewing screens has improved to allow easier interpretation of what you are seeing. It is absolutely amazing what you can see below the surface with a modern finder. The images are near to picture quality and for some models the resolution is considered to be similar to your high definition TV. The integration of GPS (Global Positioning System) side scanning sonar and standard sonar technology has made it possible to take the data your finder records and stores as you fish and with the help of a computer program, turn this into a 3 dimensional map of the bottom. Since sonar also can interpret the content of the bottom, bottom content can be shown on the map by painting hard rock areas one color and soft bottom areas a different color. If you have missed any of the new technology fishing tools introduced in the last couple of years, I highly recommend you take a closer look. I know the tools will improve your fishing.

Black Bear Martial Arts & Fitness Center Article by Ted Greenblott

T

ed Greenblott remembers being a teenager on his neighbor’s lawn in a suburb not too far from Boston. He was 14, and teaching the neighborhood kids his new passion of Tang Soo Do Karate. “I really enjoyed seeing them get how to do something they had never seen or done before,” Greenblott recalls. Today, almost 30 years later, he enjoys those moments almost every day at Black Bear Martial Arts Center in Sandpoint. When Ted first saw a building that even his realtor questioned, he had a vision. Today after much construction and improvement, Black Bear Martial Arts Center stands as a true community center for Martial Arts. “We are an American Tang Soo Do school that embraces the art in a traditional way,” said Greenblott. Black Bear offers classes for ages from 3 to 93. With the recent addition of Brazilian Jui Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, a complete fitness center with kettlebell and group led conditioning classes; Black Bear is truly a unique facility that rivals any Martial Arts Center across the nation. In addition they seem to pride themselves on the little things, such as bamboo floors, state of the art equipment, an AV system that would make a nightclub jealous, a zen garden with waterfall, homework room , locker room / showers, just to name a few. “Many people have told me that this is nicest gym they have been in, that’s great to hear,” said Greenblott. Black Bear also offers public seminars on subjects such as anti bullying and women’s self defense. “These seminars and classes, along with the fitness facility, 8 WWW.NEWSLINESONLINE.COM

will transform your body and mind beyond your level of expectations.” Greenblott credits his wife Lisa who is the president and CEO of DCC in Sandpoint. “Without her support and commitment to my passion of martial arts, I could not have ever realized this,” he said. Ted and Lisa met at The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where they both graduated. They moved to North Idaho 10 years ago .They have two children, Fredric 11, and Josie 7. Fredric is about half way to his black belt in Tang Soo Do and Josie learns through occasional private lessons her Dad gives her. Black Bear opened doors in a down economy, but since its inception it has continuously increased enrollment and has become a favorite in the community. “I believe if you dream it, you can build it,” Greenblott shared. North Idaho Spine Clinic William S. Mihin, D.C. Article by Patty Hutchens

L

ike many Sandpoint residents, Dr. Will Mihin and his wife, nurse practitioner Michelle Anderson, knew they found their home when they traveled across the Long Bridge. The couple moved from North Carolina in May 2007 when Will purchased Dr. Greg Dutson’s chiropractic practice. Since then he has established a strong reputation as both a chiropractor and an inventor. Dr. Mihin’s philosophy is to not only treat, but to educate his patients in an effort to minimize the number of required office visits. To reduce the risk of recurrence, he teaches them techniques they can use at home to increase strength and flexibility. He takes a holistic approach, customizing each patient’s treatment to meet his or her needs. There are three areas he looks to as a source of back and neck pain. The first is trauma which can be caused by a fall, an accident or even repetitive movement. The second is one’s diet and nutrition. “Poor diet choices can cause muscles to actually tighten which can cause stress on the spine,” explains Dr. Mihin. The third is emotional stress, which can manifest itself through tightening of muscles throughout the body again putting stress on the spine. “Once we determine the cause, I assess what can be done to counteract that,” said Dr. Mihin. He emphasizes that chiropractic care is different from traditional health care in that it produces results naturally by helping one’s nervous system achieve balance, which is essential to healing. “Your nervous system controls

every cell and tissue in your body,” he said. Dr. Mihin works closely with Denise Midstokke, CPM who owns Pend Oreille Midwifery and together they help pregnant women with prenatal birthing preparation, post-birth adjustments and pediatric needs including colic, ear infections, bedwetting, sleeping issues, torticollis, and general irritability. A few years ago, Dr. Mihin experienced success relieving patients’ headaches and migraines using a technique known as the occipital lift. He researched and designed a device they could use to experience the same relief at home. His invention, the Headache Hammock, has proven to be a huge success. It is available locally at Winter Ridge, White Cross, and Sandpoint Super Drug. It is also available on Amazon.com. The Headache Hammock is a natural remedy for headaches, including certain types of migraines, as well as upper cervical neck pain and muscle tension. The patent pending design effectively releases muscle tension allowing the patient to treat their pain at home or while travelling. Dr. Mihin and his wife Michelle Anderson are active members of the community. Will serves on the Board of Directors for the Forrest Bird Charter School and Michelle is active in the Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Board of Directors for Community Cancer Services. They have two children, Quin, 4, and Kole 3. For more information log onto northidahospineclinic.com and headachehammock.com.

Dr. Mihin is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. Treatments Include: • Creating individual plans and addressing the unique situation of each patient • Cold laser therapy • Nutrition Consultation • Prenatal birthing preparation • Post-birth adjustments • Pediatric needs including colic, ear infections and sleep issues • Treatment of migraines and headaches • Inventor of the headache hammock 208.265.2225 1207 Michigan Street, Suite B Sandpoint, Idaho www.northidahospineclinic.com www.headachehammock.com

Ivano’s Ristorante & La Rosa Club TREAT YOUR VALENTINE TO A SPECIAL NIGHT OUT Article by Patty Hutchens

I

t was 29 years ago when Jim and Pam Lippi moved from Northern California to Sandpoint. Jim discovered the area when working as a pole tree cutter during the summer months. Shortly thereafter, the couple opened Ivano’s Ristorante at the corner of Second and Pine where they served fine Italian cuisine for 18 years before moving to their current location at Vintage Court where they have been for almost 12 years.

cross contamination and there is little wheat flour used in the restaurants. According to Jessica there are only two dishes which cannot be prepared gluten free.

Ivano’s banquet room can seat up to 40 people or 60 for appetizers and cocktails. There is not a rental fee, only a guaranteed minimum purchase which can vary depending upon the type of service the customer requests.

Jessica, the older of Jim and Pam’s two daughters, has been active in the business for several years. She opened the popular Ivano’s Martini Bar in 2006. But when the building across the street opened up in 2011, the family viewed it as a great opportunity to fill a void in downtown that was created when the iconic Garden Restaurant closed. That is when Jessica opened La Rosa Club. Both Ivano’s and La Rosa are a tribute to Jim Lippi’s dad, Ivano. “He operated a bar in Roseville, California called the Rose Club,” said Jessica. Both offer unique and affordable dishes as well as inviting atmospheres. Ivano’s serves authentic Northern Italian cuisine, while La Rosa offers a variety of small plates, which change from season to season. “By creating a smaller menu, it is easier for us to change things around,” said Jessica of the La Rosa menu. “We can be creative and utilize seasonal ingredients.” In addition to delicious flatbreads and paninis, La Rosa serves crispy fried beets, roasted brussel sprouts, and cured meats and cheeses just to name a few. Prices range from $7 to $13 per plate. Ivano’s entrees include pasta, veal, chicken, fish and beef and range in price from $18 to $22. For those looking for a lighter meal, half orders of pasta are available as well as a variety of appetizers. Ivano’s is also open for lunch and offers a full menu of items from which to choose. A distinguishing feature of both restaurants is their gluten free menus. “Offering a quality gluten free meal is very important to us,” said Jessica. The kitchen staff is very conscientious of

The Lippi family is also known for being one of biggest contributors to the Sandpoint community. Whether it is a fundraising event or a local family in need, the Lippi family always steps forward. “The Italian Open Golf Scramble is one of our biggest events,” said Jessica about the benefit which raises money for Bonner County students seeking scholarships to further their post secondary education. Ivano’s is open 7 days a week for dinner beginning at 4:30pm and Tuesday through Saturday for lunch from 11:30am to 2:30pm. La Rosa is open Tuesday through Saturday from 4pm to 11pm. How to Find the Best Medicare Advantage Plan BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE BRIDGE AT SANDPOINT

D

id you know Medicare has a rating system that evaluates health plans based on dozens of quality measures and patient experiences? Very few plans receive the top Medicare rating. Out of 563 Medicare Advantage plans for 2013, only 11 plans with prescription drug benefits earned the top five-star rating. Six of those 11 were Kaiser Permanente plans. “We are a top plan because we focus on our patients’ health,” said Jed Weissberg, senior vice president for Hospitals, Quality and Care Delivery at Kaiser Permanente. “We help our patients to exercise, eat well, maintain a healthy weight and get regular check-ups. Walking, for example, can have remarkable therapeutic value -cutting the rate of new cases of diabetes by half or more.” Part of staying healthy is having a health plan that covers all of your medical needs. For seniors selecting a Medicare plan, this means finding one that has the right doctor and provides the care, treatment and pharmacy benefits you need. To help Medicare-eligible beneficiaries select a high-quality plan, Kaiser Permanente offers four tips.

it performs. The Medicare ratings range from one star (lowest rating) to five stars (highest rating). The system rates plans on preventive care, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service and pharmacy care. 2. Use the Medicare ratings to find a quality plan. The highest-rated plans feature well-coordinated, patientcentered care. When seniors suffer from chronic illness or require hospitalization, high-quality plans initiate best practices and treatment to deliver excellent follow-up care. 3. Look for customer service and responsiveness to your needs. The very best health care plans give patients support systems that include making online appointments, getting lab results electronically and providing secure email to their doctors. 4. Seniors can choose 5-star excellence almost any time of year through Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period. Seniors who become eligible for Medicare as they turn 65 should enroll during the three-month period prior to and after their 65th birthday. After this initial enrollment period, they may be subject to higher premiums or late penalties if there has been a gap in their coverage. To find out the latest 2013 ratings, visit www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan. Plan performance summary star ratings are assessed each year by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and may change from one year to the next.

Secondly, make sure you find the right lender. Do not let the interest rate alone be your guide. “A good lender will guide you through the process and save you time and money,” said Kamp who recommends that purchasers research interest rates prior to contacting lenders so they have an idea of what is available. Then contact mortgage companies and banks to compare rates. “The most important issue with any loan is who is going to be the servicer,” said Kamp, who recommends working with a local lender. It is also important that the home buyer is able to speak to the same person each time they call the lender. Kamp said other questions to ask a potential lender is whether they have inhouse underwriting. “You will also want to make sure the lender is in constant communication with the appraiser and that the requirements are being

Confidence in the real estate agent you pick will include inquiring as to whom they have in their toolbox that provides them with quality results. They will most likely have a working arrangement with a title company that provides the excellent customer service that you deserve. “The insurance policy paid for by the seller will remain with your property as long as you own it,” advises Kamp. “It is worth taking the time to find out about it. The choice is yours as the buyer to pick the title company when you are using a conventional loan.” Lastly, demand quality customer service. “As with any purchase, you are in the driver’s seat as the buyer and you should feel that you are getting the attention you deserve,” said Kamp. “Questions should be researched and answered quickly by your agent. They should make you feel that every possible detail is being disclosed and that you have zero reservations about the transaction”.

Valentine’s Day

Rich and Betty Faletto Article by Patty Hutchens

I

t was 53 years ago when Rich and Betty Faletto were introduced by mutual friends while attending Washington State University. It was love at first sight. “I had a vision in my mind of the person I would spend the rest of my life with, and I called her my Storybook Girl,” said Rich. “I knew immediately that Betty was that gal.” Betty said she always believed she would know it when she met that special someone. “And that proved true,” she said of the man her mother called Betty’s soul mate. Two and a half years later Rich and Betty were married in Betty’s childhood home. “The living room resembled a chapel,” said Betty. With family in town and the house already decorated for Christmas, they decided it was a perfect time to get married. The two celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 26th.

n

They both have fond memories of their first days together. “We have lots of fun pictures of us at college dances,” said Betty. For Rich a lasting memory is a prank played by his fraternity brothers. Shortly after he and Betty were “pinned” – a gift of a fraternity pin to one’s girlfriend– his fraternity brothers wrapped him in a mattress, carried him from their fraternity house and dumped him in the front yard of Betty’s sorority. “One evening later that week, we exchanged serenades, pledging our love,” said Rich.

h

c

LESSONS ON LASTING LOVE

Their life together has been filled with adventure. Rich spent 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, which meant a lot of moving. Betty said she can count 29 different addresses throughout their 50 years, 17 of which Rich said were during his time in the Air Force. “I had to pack up everything from guppies to freezers and ease the fears of three children,” said Betty of the stress involved with moving. She adds that any marriage which can survive that many moves has a good chance of making it.

Betty says her favorite of her myriad of jobs was being a full time mom. They have three children, Michelle 49, Peter 48 and Paul 47, who have blessed their lives more than they ever imagined. When their children were in high school, Betty got her first paying job. “Being without motorized transportation, I rode my horse to the interview,” said Betty who was hired as a copy writer for a radio station. When Rich retired from the Air Force the couple was eager to get back to the Northwest. They moved to Sandpoint in 1985 and opened the Floor Show. “With Rich’s logistics background and my interior design, starting The Floor Show seemed like an excellent match,” said Betty. While all married couples have differences of opinion, Rich and Betty agree on one thing. The key to a successful marriage comes down to one word – respect. “Support each other, praise the positive and forgive the negative,” said Betty. “A sense of humor is paramount,” adds Rich. Another important element is spending quality time together. “We have just reinstated date night,” said Betty. “We take turns planning a fun, surprise activity. It doesn’t have to be a lot. It is just that you have taken the time to do something nice.” Reflecting on what qualities they appreciate about one another, Betty said she admires Rich’s integrity. “He is a very caring, loyal and loving individual,” she said. Rich admires Betty’s indomitable spirit and positive energy. “She has projected these traits since the day I first met her,” said Rich.

p

When asked what advice they would give to younger adults contemplating marriage, Rich says to expect problems, disagreements and failures. But remember to be respectful of one another and always ask whether it will matter at the end of the day. As for Betty, she said it is important to remain flexible in mind, body and spirit and learn to choose your battles. “Remember that life is a tapestry. The intense contrast of light and dark are what make it beautiful,” she said.

eniors are the fastest growing segment of the population, not only in the United States, but in the world. Currently, individuals age 65 and over represent 13% of the U. S. population - about 41 million people - but this will grow to 20% — 88 million — in just a matter of 38 years. Seniors also control a great deal of the wealth in this country. (USNews)

Even though many seniors have put together financial plans or completed retirement planning, very few have a plan in place for later life needs. Most healthy, active seniors ignore this type of planning. Upon retirement they paid off their home mortgage and traveled. A number of years later, Larry’s health began to fail and signs of dementia appeared. Joan became his caregiver, while struggling with her own health issues. It was becoming apparent that they would need some outside help, either from their children or from someone who understood their challenges. For Joan and Larry there was no health insurance program that would cover non-medical care services at home. This cost would have to be paid by them out-of-pocket. If they had purchased long term care insurance when they were younger and healthy - that would have been a good strategy. But they didn’t. This is not that uncommon and certainly planning ahead with the proper advice will help avoiding this type of scenario. Sandpoint High School Students Help Raise Money for Cystinosis: Local Boy is one of 500 Nationwide who Suffer from Rare Disease Article by Patty Hutchens

W

hen Sandpoint High School senior Alex Hon first learned about the disease suffered by now six year old Hank Sturgis, he knew he wanted to help. Alex’s mom worked with Hank’s dad, Brian, and that is how Alex first learned of Hank and one of the events designed to raise money for his syndrome – cystinosis. It is a rare genetic disease that affects just 500 children and young adults nationwide and only 2000 throughout the world. The fundraiser, 24 Hours for Hank, takes place at Schweitzer Mountain Resort. It is a test of endurance as participants ski or board for a period of 24 hours, racking up as many runs, and more importantly as much money, as possible. This will be the fifth year for the event. The proceeds from this and other fundraisers put on by the 24 Hours for Hank Foundation has made the Foundation among the top contributors to the Cystinosis Research Foundation, whose purpose is to search for a cure for the disease. Brian’s wife Tricia also serves on the Board for the Cystinosis Research Foundation. When he first became involved, Alex set out to learn as much as he could about cystinosis; not only for his own knowledge but so he could educate those from whom he was requesting donations. “It is very rare and there is no cure,” said Alex. “But they are improving the treatments.” Cystinosis causes the amino acid, known as cystine, to accumulate in the cells of the body which eventually results in damage to organs including the kidneys, liver, muscles, white blood cells, eyes and central nervous system. Other complications include muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing

and developmental delays. To date, the medication simply controls some of the symptoms but cannot cure it. What does that mean for Hank? Since his diagnosis at the age of 16 months, his time is occupied with physical, occupational and speech therapy. He also engages in activities such as swimming which helps to improve muscle tone and balance. And there is also a lot of medication required. So it seems to Alex the least he can do is to help raise money for this little boy. This will be Alex’s fourth year participating in Schweitzer’s 24 Hours for Hank. As President of the Ski and Snowboarding Club of Sandpoint, he is making it his mission to get as many kids as possible to participate and raise money. One person Alex has recruited in the past is Sandpoint High School senior Justin Puryear. Justin said last year he was intrigued when Alex asked him to join his team. “I love to ski and it’s a way to raise money for a local person,” said Justin, adding that he will sign up to participate again this year. Alex said he considers the event a test of his mental strength and sees it as a new challenge each year. This year he is training for the event and hopes to exceed the 175 runs he did two years ago. While many take breaks throughout the day and night, Alex said last year he only came into the lodge once during the 24 hours to adjust his equipment. Other than that he took quick naps on the lift. “I was completely fatigued at the end,” he said.

Alex is passionate about this event and said he will help anyone who wants to participate. “If they are willing to participate, I can help them,” he said, adding that one way in which he can help is in the area of fundraising. In his own fundraising efforts, Alex has solicited donations through a letter writing campaign to several vendors in the ski industry including Solomon and Skull Candy. “Everyone has been really generous,” he said.

While it is both exhilarating and exhausting, Alex said in the end it is the cause which keeps him motivated. Justin agrees. “The people involved are so nice,” said Justin, adding that watching Hank at the event made it all worthwhile. “You see this little boy and you know he has a life threatening disease,” said Justin. “Yet he is still so joyful and happy.” Sophomore Jared Cooper has also participated in the event and plans to again this year. An avid skier, he did not know anything about cystinosis when he first got involved with 24 Hours for Hank. He took it upon himself to do the research so he could help spread the word about the worthwhile cause. “It was for a good cause and it’s a fun thing to do at the mountain,” said Jared of his involvement. “It is cool that we can raise so much money for him (Hank).” At last year’s event there were a total of 128 participants including 30 teams and 21 solo participants. The total number of runs completed was 7,774 and the total vertical feet covered was an astounding 7,064,310 feet. But it was not just locals who participated. There were people from Washington, California, Colorado, Oregon and from as far away as New York. Spokane reporters Mark Peterson, Kris Crocker and Robyn Nance from KXLY also participated and raised more than $2,000.

Alex encourages everyone of all ages to participate in any way possible. And he does not just limit that to those who are skiers and boarders. He said it takes many people to help make 24 Hours for Hank a success. Last year he ate all his meals on the ski lifts and was grateful to people who volunteered to bring coffee and food out to the participants. “It’s a matter of stepping up for the cause,” he said. This year’s event is at Schweitzer Mountain Resort on March 22nd and 23rd. For more information go to www.24hoursforhank.org/events.html.

Sandpoint High School Dance Team Shines On and Off the Dance Floor Article by Patty Hutchens

hen asked what it means to be part of the Sandpoint High School dance team, captain Summer Weidler sums it up in one word - family. She, along with co-captains junior Hailey Nutt and senior Elaina Pignolet, have worked hard the last several months preparing their team for not only performances at school assemblies, football games and basketball games, but also their many competitions. With 11 of the 19 dance team members new to the squad this year, it has required dedication on everyone’s part. That commitment has not only fostered close friendships, but it has also translated into success, as anyone who has seen these young women perform will confirm. As captains, each is responsible for a group of girls. “One thing we do is leave motivational notes for them,” said Summer. This is Hailey’s second year on the team, and while it is a lot of work, she would not trade it for anything. “I love performing and the adrenaline that comes with it,” said Hailey. “When we perform all the hard work pays off.” The three captains agree that it is their coach, Cindy Smith, who has made them successful. “It (dancing) is a lot of work, but she makes it so much fun,” said Summer of her coach of four years. Coach Smith has high standards for her girls, and she enforces her strict rules. If anyone violates the code of conduct, she is automatically off the team. There are no second chances.

Last year the dance team placed first overall at district competition and placed near the top for the Pacific Northwest competitions – including third place for prop dancing, second place for hip-hop, second place for small dance and first place for dance and kick. At state competition they placed an impressive fourth overall and took home the state championship in the category of academics; another area upon which Coach Smith places a great deal of emphasis. This month the district competition will be held at Sandpoint High School on February 23rd followed by the Pacific Northwest competition on March 9th. State competition is scheduled for March 15th and 16th.

“She sticks to her values no matter what,” said Summer. “And everything she tells us to do she does herself.” Elaina said that the result has been that the dance team has earned a superior reputation among its peers and teachers. Shortly after tryouts last May, the girls began to practice. They met over the summer for workshops with guest coaches who worked with them on various routines. The girls also attended a summer dance camp for three days. During the school year they arrive early for 7am practice each day and on Wednesday they have a one hour technique class taught by assistant coach Alyssa Remsen, a former Sandpoint High School dance team member who recently graduated from the University of Idaho. All this is in addition to their dance class which

Elaina, Summer, and Hailey all look forward to continuing with dance after they graduate; but they all agree it will be difficult to top the experience they have had at Sandpoint High School.

sk Jordan Speelmon how long she has played basketball and her answer is simple. “Since I learned to walk,” she said. The only senior on the SHS varsity team, Jordan enjoys being part of a team and playing together. “But I also love competition so whenever I can get my hands on some, I do it,” she said. “I love the adrenaline rush.” Jordan played soccer and volleyball until her freshman year and last year played softball. But it is not only in the area of athletics where she excels, she also has received academic awards. “In 5th grade I received a junior achievement award and went to Washington DC for a week,” she said. Jordan’s biggest athletic challenge is controlling her speed. “I have always had a tendency to want to go 100 miles per hour, so learning and teaching myself how to slow down has been something I had to overcome,” said Jordan. “I still slip up and go too fast but I have gotten better.” When asked about her most memorable moment in sports, she struggles to narrow it down. “I know all the memories I have made with this team have made us more unified,” said Jordan. “There’s never a dull moment.” Favorite Food: Chicken Alfredo Favorite Teacher: Mrs. Roos because she has a wonderful personality and is always willing to help.

Nathan Schwartz

N

athan Schwartz is no stranger to Sandpoint High School sports fans. This is the SHS junior’s second year on the varsity basketball team He has also played soccer since he was 5 years old and for the last 2 years he has been on the SHS varsity soccer team. Nathan also played on the SHS varsity tennis team last year and plans to go out for track this spring. An all around outstanding athlete, Nathan said his most memorable moment to date is when his soccer team won the 2012 4A State Soccer Championship last fall. When it comes to basketball, he said he enjoys the atmosphere and the role the fans play in helping to motivate the team. “The fans are really close to the players and fans can help a team with momentum during a game,” said Nathan. He said whether it is soccer, basketball, tennis or any other sport he plays, the biggest challenge for him is keeping a strong mindset when things are not going his way. “Whether I am struggling in practices or in games, I try to stay focused and improve my abilities,” he said of how he deals with that challenge. Nathan said he does not know where he would like to go to continue his post secondary education, but he does plan to attend a four year college and major in mechanical engineering. Favorite Food: Reuben sandwich Favorite Teacher: Mr. Martz. “He teaches physics, a subject I really enjoy, in an engaging way,” said Nathan.

Students, Parents & SHS Staff Working Together Towards Common Goal Article by Patty Hutchens

W

hen Mark Sauter attended the first C.A.R.E. (Caring Adults Recognizing Excellence) meeting in August, he was eager to help with the new Sandpoint High School parent organization.

James B. Lewis, D.M.D. Mark W. Hawn, D.D.S.

In addition to lending support to both students and staff, C.A.R.E. also takes part in and initiates collaborative projects among the parents, teachers and students. “The idea is for the school, staff and students to come together with the parents to create something that in the end will improve the school,” said C.A.R.E. founder Stacy Temple. The group’s first collaborative project is to build a barbeque to be used for various Sandpoint High School functions. Sauter was intrigued by the project and immediately stepped forward to help. But his vision was much more than a barbeque. He is working with SHS teacher Malia Meschko and her computer aided design students to draft the blueprint for a 17 foot by 8 foot flatbed trailer which is being transformed into a wagon complete with a barbeque, burners, sink, water holding tank, stovetop, storage space, countertops and a collapsible aluminum roof. Yogi Vasquez’s welding class will soon begin working on a floor, replacing the current plywood with aluminum. “We want it to be as durable as possible and easy to clean,” said Mark, who adds he hopes to have stainless or aluminum countertops. There will also be a place to store ice chests to avoid the mold problems that can arise from a refrigeration unit. To be sure there are no surprises in their future, Sauter consulted with Panhandle Health District to learn what guidelines must be met for a sanitary environment. Sauter estimates the total cost of the project will be between $8,000 to $10,000. However with donations he hopes the out of pocket cost will be much less. He donated the trailer and they have raised some money through raffles at the basketball games, something Sauter said is easy to do and can be successful. “A lot of people do not mind giving a dollar,” he said. “It all adds up.” The fact that the barbeque itself has already been donated has been a tremendous help. “Our immediate need is for a covered place where we can work on the project and be protected from the elements.” Sauter, who has a stepson in the ninth grade, has been impressed with the students who have helped out thus far and looks forward to getting more kids involved in the project. “They have been very eager and helpful,” said Sauter, who adds his goal is to complete the project by May. “In the end, the school will have a tool which allows the students to support their own programs through fundraising.” To donate to CARE’s fundraising efforts, please mail your check to: SHS Attn: C.A.R.E. 410 South Division, Sandpoint, Idaho 83864.

What to Do When You’re Sick, But Not Sick Enough OVER-THE-COUNTER HELP

D

octors agree that cold and flu symptoms are nothing to sneeze at and that the sooner they’re treated, the better chance there is for a quick recovery and minimum disruption of lifestyle. Yet, people hesitate to take medication at the crucial early stage for lots of reasons. First, it can be difficult to tell where early symptoms will lead. Some people try orange juice or a nap, adding different treatments, step by step, as time passes, if symptoms grow worse. “I see it all the time,” says Chris Gilbert, M.D., author of “Dr. Chris’s A, B, C’s of Health.” “Patients take great proactive steps like washing their hands frequently and taking a multivitamin. They don’t know what to do, though, when they start to get sick. They wait until their condition gets so bad that they can’t sleep at night or function during the day, so they have nothing to lose by taking something that will put them in a fog.” Drivers, equipment operators, pilots and night workers can’t take antihistamines or decongestants that can cause drowsiness. Others just don’t like to take medication or don’t like to admit they’re vulnerable. The problem is that when cold and flu sufferers get to the point of taking a medication that will suppress symptoms until the body heals on its own, the action of suppressing symptoms is counterproductive to what the body is doing to help itself.

nip symptoms in the bud. Homeopathic medicines work with the body to help it rebalance and heal itself instead of simply masking symptoms. Clinical studies show that top seller Oscillococcinum helps reduce both the severity and duration of flu-like symptoms. In fact, when patients took it within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms, nearly 63 percent showed “clear improvement” or “complete resolution” within 48 hours, according to a study published in a British scientific journal. These results confirm results from previous studies. “Patients have told me that they feel much better the next morning, even when they thought they would be bedridden the evening before. It’s the step to take after proactively trying to prevent illness with vitamins but before it gets to the point where you think you need to mask symptoms with heavy-duty medication,” says Dr. Gilbert. “For years I’ve been telling my patients to keep Oscillo on hand.” This family treatment for 2- to 102-year-olds has a 65-year safety record, no side effects such as drowsiness, and no interactions with other medications or supplements. Tips to Help You Get More Sleep MAKING SURE YOU GET ENOUGH Z’S

O

ne of the simplest things you can do for your health is to get enough sleep, say experts. Unfortunately, many Americans have difficulty sleeping, making this seem like a simple task, but it can be anything but simple.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average American sleeps about six hours and 55 minutes per night during the week, and 15 percent of adults sleep less than six hours per night. “Lack of sleep can take a significant toll on your overall health and interfere with some of your daily activities,” said Dr. Michael Thorpy, director of the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at the Montefiore Medical Center in New York. Almost everybody has trouble sleeping now and then, but many Americans experience significant problems getting to sleep or continually wake up in the middle of the night. Such problems may be clinical symptoms of insomnia. According to the National Sleep Foundation, if you have trouble falling asleep at night, or staying asleep, or you wake up in the morning feeling unrefreshed, you may be suffering from insomnia. Insomnia can affect people in different ways. Some sufferers have trouble initially getting to sleep, while others wake up in the middle of the night and have difficulty falling back asleep. To help you get better sleep, Dr. Thorpy suggests these simple tips: • Set and stick to a sleep schedule. Establish a regular bedtime and wake time. • Set aside time at night to “wind down.” Spend some quiet time before bedtime. Such activities as watching TV, using the computer or working right before bedtime, or in the bedroom, can make it harder to fall asleep. • Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed. • Exercise regularly. Just don’t exercise rigorously near bedtime, and check with your doctor before starting an exercise regimen. • Don’t clock-watch. If you awaken in the middle of the night and stay in bed, don’t lie there staring at the clock. And don’t watch TV or use your laptop or cell phone, because these technologies stimulate the brain, making it tougher to fall back to sleep. If these tips don’t help, speak with your healthcare professional to help determine whether you are suffering from insomnia and require treatment. More information regarding insomnia is available at the National Sleep Foundation website at www.sleepfoundation.org.

or a healthy alternative to the American grilling classic, the burger, consider adding unique ingredients such as California Raisins to add flavor and nutrition. A good source of potassium and fiber, raisins are an all-natural, no-sugar-added ingredient and are fat- and cholesterol-free. As if that weren’t enough, raisins may support heart health, according to new research. A study at the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Center suggests eating raisins three times daily may significantly lower blood pressure for adults with prehypertension. “Raisins deliver dietary fiber and beneficial nutrients like potassium and antioxidants associated with cardioprotective benefits, such as reduced blood pressure,” said Dr. James Painter, registered dietitian and nutrition research advisor for the California Raisin Marketing Board. “These findings add to the growing body of scientific evidence that indicates there may be numerous positive health benefits linked to eating raisins.”

Make Your Child’s Shots Less Stressful KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE FROM DISEASE

V

accines help protect babies and young children against 14 serious diseases. Even though you are keeping her safe from diseases, it’s hard to see your child cry when she gets her shots. But you can take some steps before, during and after a vaccine visit to ease the pain and stress of getting shots. Read about the shots your child will get in advance. Bring your child’s vaccine record to show the doctor. Pack a favorite toy, book, blanket or other comfort item. For older children, be honest -- shots can pinch or sting, but not for long. Remind them that shots help keep them healthy. Ask your child’s doctor any questions you have about vaccines. You may even want to ask about cooling or numbing the area of your child’s arm or leg before the shots. Distract your child with a toy, a story, a song or something interesting in the room. Make eye contact with your child and smile, talk softly or sing. Hold your child tightly on your lap if you can. Take deep breaths with an older child to help “blow out” the pain. After the shot, hug, cuddle and praise your child. For babies, swaddling, breastfeeding or a bottle may offer quick relief. Comfort and reassure older children if they cry. “Read the Vaccine Information Sheets from your doctor so you know what to expect after the shots,” said Dr. Melinda Wharton, Deputy Director, National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Some children have pain or swelling where a shot was given, a rash or a fever. These reactions are usually mild and resolve on their own without needing treatment.” If you notice redness, soreness or swelling from the shot, place a clean, cool washcloth on the area. If your child runs a fever, try a cool sponge bath. You can also use a non-aspirin pain reliever if your doctor says it’s OK. Some children eat less, sleep more or act fussy for a day after they get shots. Make sure your child gets plenty to drink. If you’re worried about anything, call your doctor. “Shots can be stressful,” said Dr. Wharton. “But you can ease your child’s discomfort. And keeping your child up to date on vaccines is the best way to protect against vaccine-preventable diseases.” Learn more about childhood vaccines at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/ parents or call 800.CDC.INFO (800.232.4636).

Training for a Triathlon IRONMAN COEUR D’ALENE Article by Colin Anderson

I

ronman Coeur d’Alene is always one of the most anticipated events in our area. There are countless stories of triumph, determination and redemption. Watching exhausted competitors collapse while crossing the finish line after giving it their all is truly an inspiring sight. That inspiration can lead those of us in the crowd to think ‘maybe I could do that’, but few of us ever follow through. It takes an incredibly dedicated person to train year round for one of the most punishing races in the world, and many of us simply don’t have that drive. While we might not all be Ironmen, we can still pursue a similar goal by competing in one of the many regional sprint triathlons.

there is no point in risking injury by going overboard from the start. Try running a mile or two every other day and biking to work a couple of times per week. Make time once a week to swim laps. As you continue to build up endurance combine the two of the exercises without taking a break in between. As you approach the final month increase the distance so that it’s further than the race i.e. 15 mile bike ride, 4 to 5 mile run and ¾ mile swim. Most of the local sporting good stores can help you find the right gear for the race.

The word ‘sprint’ is rather amusing as it’s doubtful you’ll complete the event in less than twenty seconds, but compared to an Ironman race these triathlons are sprints. Just like Ironman you begin with a swim, hop on your bike and finish with a run, only the distances are more like crossing through town instead of exploring the state. A sprint triathlon usually consists of a half mile swim, 12 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run. Training for this event isn’t nearly as strenuous and grueling as an Ironman, but it will still take self discipline and hard work. If you haven’t been using your gym membership, now is the time to get back in there and get going! Your first step is to commit now and register early. By registering now you give yourself a set amount of training days you will have until race day. You can now develop a training program and set goals each month. It is always best to seek advice from experts before starting an exercise program so consult the trainers at your local gym. It’s always best to start out slow, and with four to five months to train

A sprint triathlon is a great introduction to the sport. It might be the shortest of all triathlons but the race is no walk in the park, even for well trained athletes. If you commit an hour of training a day, four times a week, you should have no problem completing the course no matter your age or experience. Register, set a goal, start training and you too might inspire someone in the crowd to try something new and improve their health and wellness.

A THOUGHTFUL VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED?

Jim asked his friend, Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine’s Day.

When a woman on the staff of the school where I worked became engaged, a friend and colleague offered her some advice.

“Yes,” came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist, “I’ve bought her a belt and a bag.”

“The first ten years are the hardest.”

“That was very kind of you,” Jim added, “I hope she appreciated the thought.”

“How long have you been married?” she asked. “Ten years”, he replied.

Tony smiled as he replied, “So do I, and hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work better now.”

WHO SHOULD MAKE THE COFFEE?

MY ONE AND ONLY

A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each morning.

Roger, who was 19 years old, was buying an expensive bracelet, to surprise his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day, at a very smart jeweller’s shop in Hatton Garden, London. The jeweler inquired, “Would you like your girlfriend’s name engraved on it?” Roger thought for a moment, grinned, then answered, “No, instead engrave ‘To my one and only love’.” The jeweler smiled and said, “Yes, sir; how very romantic of you.” Roger retorted with a glint in his eye, “Not exactly romantic, but very practical. This way, if we break up, I can use it again.”

The wife said, “You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don’t have to wait as long to get our coffee.” The husband said, “You are in charge of the cooking around here so you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my coffee.”Wife replies, “No, you should do it, and besides it says in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.” Husband replies, “I can’t believe that! Show me.” So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, that it indeed says, “HEBREWS.”

BLACK & WHITE WEDDING

500 VALENTINE’S CARDS

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?”

Mike walked into a post office just before Valentine’s day, he couldn’t help noticing a middle-aged, balding man standing in a corner sticking “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. Then the man got out a bottle of Channel perfume from his pocket and started spraying scent over the envelopes.

“Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.”

By now Mike’s curiosity had got the better of him, and so I asked the man why he was sending all those cards. The man replied, “I’m sending out 500 Valentine cards signed, ‘Guess who?’” “But why?” asked Mike. “I’m a divorce lawyer,” the man replied.
