Lillstreet Summer Camps

Kidstreet Summer Camps at Lillstreet offer a wide variety of programs for children of all ages. Each week of camp, students ages 3 through young adult add to the lively Lillstreet community, working and learning among professional artists of all media. We pride ourselves in our creative instructors and guided learning experiences designed to maximize each child’s personal creativity. Each student is seen as an individual with a unique voice, and every student is taught to create fearlessly, focusing on the process of making art more than on the end result. Most importantly, we foster a relaxed and non-competitive environment in the classroom and everyone has lots of fun! The techniques students develop at Lillstreet do not stop here; students use their new skills artistically, interpersonally and also academically for years to come.

Some camps include a field trip to a cultural/arts institution in Chicago. All admission and transportation costs for field trips are included in tuition.

Children must be potty trained and have attended a preschool.

All Things Messy Ages 3-5 Lillstreet’s youngest campers like to explore all things messy when it comes to art. Through enriched art-making experiences, your child will experiment with clay, paint, prints and paper to create their own messy masterpieces. Weeks A, G

Time hop through art history and explore art movements. Campers will use clay, paint and mixed media to create their own masterpieces. On Tuesday, we will be immersed in and inspired by famous works and artists while we spend the day learning, sketching and exploring The Art Institute of Chicago.

Cosmic Creations

Ages 6-8

Investigate Ancient Egypt, and unfold the many mysteries of its kingdoms and dynasties. Learn about pyramids, pharaohs, mummification, hieroglyphics and the Nile River. Campers will make their own reproduction of Egyptian art through painting, making their own paper, clay pots and hieroglyphics. On Tuesday, campers will be inspired and learn about Egyptian artifacts at The Field Museum.

Let’s use our imagination and blast off into outer space! Using a variety of materials and techniques, create your own rockets, galaxies and far out space creatures. On Tuesday we’ll visit the Adler Planetarium. It’ll be out of this world!

Become a paleontologist for the week and discover the world of dinosaurs. Using clay, plaster craft, paint and fabric, we will make fossils, prehistoric creatures and even create our very own dinosaur! On Tuesday we’ll visit The Field Museum to meet Sue and learn about prehistoric creatures.

Ages 9-11

Boxes come in different shapes, sizes and materials. We use boxes to store, ship, move, open and close. Learn to transform boxes into a variety of forms like cars, rocket ships, time machines and treasure chests. Boxes can be made to hold collections, jewelry and other keepsakes.

Campers will explore the art of disguise while learning about masks from different cultures, traditions, entertainment and holidays. We will use a variety of materials such as plaster craft and clay to create and decorate our handmade masks.

Design and sew your own monster or monster truck plushies. Campers will practice hand sewing and stuffing fabrics that have been designed during the week. Basic machine sewing will be introduced.

Week C

You know how to thread a machine and you’ve mastered the basics of sewing, so what’s next? We’ve got you covered with this second-level sewing camp. You’ll warm up by sewing a rectangular pillow, then learn how to create pajama shorts and pillows of your initials. Some materials provided or bring your own fabric before the start of camp.

From threading a sewing machine to cutting a pattern, you’ll master the basics and learn a variety of stitches and seams along the way. Walk away with a bag and apron designed and created by you. Maps and Hidden Treasures Ages 9-11 Everyone needs a little mystery in their life! Learn multiple ways to map real and imaginary locations. Create paper and textile maps using screen and block printing techniques, and design a T-shirt with the logo of your map society. On Tuesday, we visit The Field Museum to learn about cartography and archaeology in a hand’s-on setting. Week G

Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing Ages 9-11 Explore both the sculptural and functional qualities of clay while creating original works of art. Learn to center clay on a wheel, roll a slab or create a vase completely out of coils. Glazing will also be taught to add color to your collection of pottery.

Have fun creating a comic book designed and made by you. Starting from the beginning with a simple comic strip, you’ll learn the process of writing and drawing a complete short story. Ages 9-11 This dynamic camp will teach you all the important steps that go into making a film — from writing and directing, to acting and editing, to costume and set design. This full-day camp will leave plenty of time for creating while also giving students a comprehensive and exciting introduction to the history of film.

Clocks, nightlights, wind chimes, candle holders and jewelry are a few of the projects that can be created using copper and brass sheet and wire. Techniques such as saw piercing, hammering, texturing, cold connections and polishing will be demonstrated.

After looking at popular graphic tees, you’ll develop your own individual logos, drawings and clever sayings for one-of-a-kind gear. Make Your Own Video Game

Ages 9-11 Using Scratch, a graphical programming language designed by MIT, learn to construct your own animations, games and stories. We’ll share our interactive projects using drag and drop blocks. Through an online account, our projects will be accessible even after camp ends.

Forge, Fire and Feast Ages 10-13

Hungry for some fun? The first two days will be spent making bowls and plates out of slabs of clay. We then move to metals, learning how to cut and shape forks, knives and spoons. On Friday we put our hard work to the test — campers bring in something tasty to share and we feast!

Fashion Camp Ages 12-14 Can’t find that perfect outfit that sets you apart from the rest? Learn to design and re-purpose outfits from clothes you already have at home or from thrift store finds. Some fabrics will be available for use, but you may want to pick out your own from local fabric stores. Our week culminates with a fashion photo shoot. Week F

En Plein Air Ages 12-14 Campers will step outside to draw and paint this week. We will learn about the impressionist painting movement, En Plein Air. We will visit local gardens, parks and sculptures and bring our sketchbooks, canvases and paints to paint live! Weeks E, F

Fundamentals of Sculpture Ages 12-14 Get inspired and create sculptures like the masters. From Picasso to DuBuffet, we will explore a variety of art mediums to create fun sculptures and colorful masterpieces using paint, clay, plaster and fiber. Questions about art, size and the sculptures at The Art Institute of Chicago will serve as our inspiration on Tuesday. Week H

Learn how to draft, sculpt and hand build architectural structures using mixed media, clay, recycled materials and plaster. Tuesday, we will gather inspiration from our tour of the Chicago History Museum.

Start planning for Halloween or transform your everyday life into fantasy. Learn how to use a sewing machine to create outfits from your imagination. Explore craft techniques like plaster and papier-maché to create masks and wire armatures to create wings. Come with fun ideas and leave with a creative costume. Week I

Digital Arts Survey

Ages 12-14

A variety of drawing and illustration skills will be taught, including proportion, perspective, line, value, shading and stippling. Sketchbooks will be filled with everyday ideas and unique inspirations. Different media such as graphite, colored pencil, markers and pen and ink will all be introduced and explored.

Craft brightly-colored, screen-printed art on paper. Everything from design, image creation, screen prep and good printing techniques will be covered. Choose your own themes, and print eye-catching, three-color posters. Paper and inks provided.

Learn the basic skills needed to center clay and throw a pot while encouraging the expression of your personal ideas on the wheel. Glazing will also be taught as we create our own collection of pottery.

Create artwork, turn it into digital files and learn a variety of computer skills along the way. This camp has a little something for everyone -- including drawing, sculpting, 3D modeling, photography, Photoshop and digital illustration. Campers leave with new tricks and a digital portfolio to present to schools.

Art of the Graphic Novel Ages 12-14 Learn from a graphic novelist all the steps involved in crafting your own story. From scripting and thumbnailing to penciling, inking and layout, we’ll go step by step and learn all the tricks and techniques for combining words and images. Weeks A, B, K

Painting Techniques and Materials Ages 12-14

Learn how to paint with a variety of mediums such as pastels, inks, watercolors, tempera and acrylics. A variety of application methods, color mixing and paint layering will be explored. Students will gesso a canvas and repurpose a surface for future use. Discover how all these techniques and skills, combined with composition and value, come together to create a painting.

Street Photography Ages 12-14

Movie Making Ages 12-14 This dynamic camp will teach you all the important steps that go into making a film -- from writing and directing, to acting and editing, to costume and set design. This full day camp will leave plenty of time for creating while also giving students a comprehensive and exciting introduction to the history of film.

Learn the rich history of street photography. Through instructor-lead photo walks, students will learn how to capture a fleeting moment in time and create candid images that will last forever. At the end of the week, we’ll select all our best images as a class and create a dynamic slideshow to premiere at Lillstreet and take home.

Starting with a guided trip to the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool in Lincoln Park, we will observe, draw and collect natural objects to animate. Campers will learn to create stop frame animation using a digital camera and iStopMotion. This camp focuses on seeing the natural world around us and making cool, ecofriendly art.

Storytelling Through Photography

Summer Camps

Ages 12-14 Become a visual storyteller! Learn the basic structures of a story while learning how to incorporate symbolism and metaphor into your photographs. You’ll sequence images to create a narrative, and we will end the class by creating small books of our photographs to bring home. DSLR cameras preferred. Cell phone cameras are not recommended. Ages 14-18 Screen Printing: Posters and More Ages 14-18 Screen printing is perfect for creating gig posters for bands, personal note cards and other publications. Learn image creation, screen prep and good printing techniques in this fastmoving camp. Using words and your own drawings, print an eye-catching, three-color poster and a project of your choice. Bookbinding: Sketchbooks and Journals

Learn the basic skills, tools and vocabulary of bookbinding and book arts. Combine printmaking and collage to create custom covers for your own sketchbooks and journals. Make Coptic stitch and long stitch books, plus more book forms. Finish the week by filling your book with personal content or adding to your blank book collection.

Urban Nature Photography Ages 12-14 Learn to create stunning photographs in a city environment. Through instructor-lead photo walks throughout our neighborhood, students will not only learn the best ways to photograph nature, but also how to creatively visualize the urban landscape. This camp will introduce unique ways of image making through cyanotype, scanning, collage and more. DSLR cameras preferred. Cell phone cameras are not recommended. Week B

Printmaking Ages 14-18 Learn drawing and printmaking techniques including block print, monotype, stencil and drypoint. Art of the Graphic Novel

Glass Beads & Jewelry

Ages 14-18

Learn basic torch techniques while creating simple, decorative glass beads. Shaping, heat control, color, use of tools, classroom equipment and studio safety will be covered. You’ll then learn how to turn your creations into jewelry and small sculpture using copper and brass wire. Silver will be available for an additional fee.

Wax Casting & Carving Ages 14-18 Using both soft and hard waxes for building and carving, students can create rings, charms, pendants and even small sculptures. We start by making a plaster mold around our wax models, burn the wax out in a kiln and cast our treasures in bronze. Silver will be available for an additional fee. Week C

Intermediate Metals Camp Ages 14-18 You’ve learned the basics, now it’s time to “forge” forward. Campers must sign in at the registration table on the first day of class only. The remainder of the week, campers report directly to their classroom. Pick up for all kids will be from their classroom inside the building. All campers MUST be signed out by pre-approved individuals. Weather permitting, we bring the children to the park to play. Please dress your child for the weather and send sunscreen, hats, glasses, water bottles etc. Speak with your child’s teacher regarding any special instructions. We walk to Helen Zatterberg play lot located at 4246 N. Hermitage Ave. It is a shaded and gated play lot with a water fountain.
