Ceramics First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 4 or 5 Weeks Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. You will work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet on the first day of class. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay. 4 Weeks

Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

First-Time Handbuilding 5 Weeks Learn handbuilding techniques such as pinch pots, coils and slabs to make pottery, art objects or sculptures. 5 Weeks Imagination flows as you create figurative, abstract, anthropomorphic or animal sculptures. Exploring a variety of hand building techniques you may also choose to articulate your figures to create a moving doll. For this five-week session, we will be exploring the bright and colorful surfaces that can be produced with Terra Cotta low fire clay and electric kiln firings. All levels welcome

Explore the rich history and bright color palette of low-fired ceramic surface decorations. Demonstrations and discussions will involve the use of terra sigilata, underglazes, slips and glazes on terra cotta. Prerequisite: One year of ceramics classes or instructor approval.

In the 21st century, the human figure still occupies the center stage as an image of inspiration for artists. We will look at some of the more prominent artists of our times and explore your ideas and interpretation of the human form while learning and applying various clay techniques towards that end. Glazing is for Chumps

4 or 5 Weeks Learn the ins and outs of creating mugs, tumblers and cups of all shapes and sizes. We will cover techniques such as throwing off the hump as well as a variety of surface decorations.

4 Weeks We all know glazing your sculptures can be the easiest and fastest way to destroy it. Explore a variety of coldsurfacing techniques including tool dips, paints, epoxies, washes, waxes and polishes. You are encouraged to come to the class with finished bisqueware sculptures and to make test tiles for other sculptures. Purchase of additional materials will be necessary.

Breaking the Creative Block 5 Weeks Break up creative blocks, generate new ideas, and rejuvenate your processes as a maker. Each class will be centered around creative exercises to loosen up and inspire new work. Spontaneity and intuitive building will promote new ways of making. Prerequisite: One year of ceramics classes or instructor approval.

Toner Litho Transfer on Clay 4 Weeks Print repeatable images on greenware or leather-hard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Use paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly to clay at many stages using special oil-based inks. Learn surface design techniques that can be adapted for wheel-thrown or hand-built forms, for low or high fire clay bodies. Bonus - you keep your shelves in the ceramics department!

Glaze Your Stuff Already

Home & Garden Pottery

5 Weeks

You know who you are...! You have a mountain of bisque-ware because you love to throw but avoid glazing at all costs. Learn about cone 10 glaze techniques to help broaden your abilities and help you get over the reluctance of not wanting to glaze.

This independently driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. Instructor is on hand to guide you through your projects, problem solve and demonstrate as needed.

Prerequisite: One year of ceramics classes or instructor approval.

Our current classes offer students the opportunity to refine their skills as a photographer, graphic artist, animator or explore 3D modeling and digital fabrication. Like digital media, our department is always changing as we innovate with this dynamic means of expression.

Multi-level Illustrator II 3 Weeks

5 Weeks Master the essentials of Photoshop. Learn the basics tools needed for making simple image adjustments including cropping, brushes, selection tools, image adjustments and masks. You will also gain an understanding of different file formats and saving images.

First-Time Illustrator 5 Weeks Turn analog sketches and ideas into stunning digital designs. You will utilize the fundamental Illustrator tools (fill, color, swatches, text, lines and brushes) to make complex patterns out of simple shapes, while exploring and customizing workspace to manage projects.

This class builds on the skills and techniques covered in First-Time Illustrator. Use the path tool to create more complex graphics, take sketches and drawings to fully colored vector artwork, use special effect tools to create dynamic text, and create custom brushes and patterns. Access to Illustrator outside of class-time highly suggested.

4 Weeks Drawing inspiration from comics, movies, animation and video games, you will learn about visual composition and storytelling through character design. Focus will be on creating diverse characters, basic anatomy and drawing figures from all angles, dynamic poses, facial expressions and beginner digital coloring. If you have a digital drawing tablet, bring it to class.

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced collage artist looking for inspiration, come and explore the process of generating imagery through collage. Explore creative ways to join metal and set stones through cold connection. Rivets will be made to hold pieces together securely or made to allow pieces to move. This class will begin with basic metalworking and continue with multiple techniques of connecting metal and setting cabochons and found objects without heat.

Learn to create beautiful one of a kind jewelry from non-traditional materials. We will work and experiment with wood, plexi, cement, plastic, found objects and more to create all types of jewelry. In addition to the materials we will provided in class, students are encouraged to bring in items of their own to experiment with as a new material.

This multi-level class explores the three-dimensional possibilities of hard wax for carving and soft wax for modeling. You can expect to complete one or two small pieces such as rings, charms or miniature sculptures. One casting will be done in class or waxes can be brought to a production caster for a nominal fee. All materials, except metal, included.

Electro-Etching 4 Weeks Learn about the electrolytic process to etch designs in metal. Use a variety of solutions such as salt water, copper sulfate and cupric nitrate to etch copper, brass and sterling silver. Experiment with a rectifier to test currents and voltages to achieve different etchings. Use PnP transfer images, vinyl stencils or marker drawings as your resist. Keum-boo Pendants

Keum-boo is a gilding technique where thin sheets of gold foil are applied to fine silver using heat and pressure to permanently combine the two materials. The first part of the workshop will be discussion and demonstration, and the second half will be experimenting with the material and techniques to create a one-ofa-kind pendant.

Create a stunning filigree-style pendant or ornament with fine silver and a dichroic glass cabochon. Manipulate fine silver “paper” into quilled petals or tendrils, surrounding a bold burst of color. Students will have their choice of glass and silver pattern; two options will be demonstrated and directions for both provided in print.

Marbled Greeting Cards 1 Day

Spend a day carving holiday-themed images from linoleum blocks and printing them on notecards, gift cards and other stationery. Great to give as a gift or keep for yourself.

Create one-of-a-kind greeting cards while learning marbling techniques. Acrylic ink is used and floats on either water or a viscous solution and is transferred to paper. Investigate how to apply beautiful, rich color to various fabrics while exploring the foundations of natural dyes and their relevance in contemporary practice. Experience this incredible process through various methods of dyeing and resist techniques. You provide fabrics after the first week of class. Transform a plain scarf into a colorful creation of self expression. This course introduces you to the bountiful world of MX dyes using several techniques of applying thickened dyes to print with stencils, stamping and rolling. Indigo Extravaganza 1 Day Explore the history and techniques of Indigo dye. We will apply shibori resist techniques to silk and cotton, learn how to build an indigo bath and see visual resources and samples of this exceptional dye. Topics in Quilting: Strip Piecing 1 Day Ever wonder how to make perfect checkerboard patterns, zigzags and diamonds? Strip piecing is the answer. We will examine strip pieced designs developed by the Seminole Indians, in the early twentieth century, and other traditional patterns that utilize strip piecing. You’ll then experiment with the technique to create both perfect rigid geometrical repetitions and improvised designs. Snow & Ice Dyeing 1 Day Snow and ice can be used to create beautiful dyed fabrics. Lil’Kidstreet inspires your child’s natural delight for song, rhythm, color and texture. Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop.
