Lillstreet’s long-established clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

Ceramics First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks

Dress for mess and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Sculptural Narratives in Clay 10 Weeks Learn handbuilding techniques to develop your ideas into clay sculpture while engaging your creative thinking process. Classes will present a broader discussion of sculptural forms beyond the figure and how best to incorporate narrative elements.

Looking for something unique to adorn your kitchen, bathroom or fireplace? Learn to make decorative tiles from a slab of clay. We’ll teach you how to build up and carve into the clay then make a plaster mold from your tile to make multiples. Firing and glazing will be discussed.

10 Weeks Examine various hand-building processes for constructing boxes. You will start by learning simple slab building techniques and progress to alternative methods, themes and traditional and alternative surface treatments.

Advanced Topics in Soda: From Soda to Pop

This independently driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. Instructor is on hand to guide you through your projects, problem solve and demonstrate as needed.

Find inspiration in making from the world of pop music! You will push it real good by making salt n’ pepper shakers, lady marmalade jars and little brown jugs as we explore the staples of pop music past and present in clay. Plan to participate in all stages of the soda process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time.

Beginning Slip Casting

Discover the ways that a variety of elements transform in the soda kiln. In addition to soda slips, we will work with cone 10 slips, terra sigillata and glazes. We’ll look at various ways to apply these things and test a variety of our own in class.

Does making multiples of your favorite cup, vase or other sculptural or functional forms interest you? Learn to make 2-part plaster molds of household objects to use for slip casting. This technique allows you to pour a specially formulated, liquid clay into your mold and create multiples of the same object.

Open Studio Drop-in Drop-in drawing and painting sessions offer an excellent opportunity for beginning to advanced students to practice and work independently. Please bring your own drawing materials. A monitor will be on hand but please note that Instruction, a model and critique are not included. First-Time Artist First-Time Drawing into Painting 5 Weeks Combine basic drawing with the fundamentals of painting in this introductory class. You will become acquainted with line, value and composition while learning to combine them into successful drawings. These fundamental elements will then be integrated into compositional strategies for creating acrylic paintings. Transfer It 5 Weeks Learn to source your own images to be used in various transferring methods, such as traditional gel medium transfers, non-traditional transfers, collage and mixed media. Multilevel Developing a Journal & Sketchbook 5 Weeks The journals and sketchbooks of Kafka, Goya, Faulkner and others have been inspired by the intersection of word and image. Sumi-e (Ink-Painting)

Whether you’re a beginner or experienced collage artist looking for inspiration, join us and explore the process of generating imagery through collage. Learn new ways to compose space, work with found materials, think critically about material choices and develop abstract imagery from representational sources. Please bring scissors and a small selection of found materials for the first class.

Experience the meditative practice of traditional Japanese ink painting, sumi-e, the art of painting using a brush (fude), ink (sumi) and thin, absorbent “rice-paper” (washi). Fundamental brushstrokes will be reviewed and insights into the “way of the brush” will be discussed, while you experiment with your original work.

Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing or equivalent experience recommended.

5 Weeks

Learn to draw from many different historical periods in art history discussing various artists. Areas of study may include the Old Masters, Greek and Roman sculpture, the modernists and contemporary works. Learn about composition, pictorial organization and subject matter. Class meets each week at the Art Institute of Chicago. Admission is free on Thursday (must present valid Illinois ID).

Individualized instruction helps you develop new skills and styles as you work from the nude model. Poses are extended through multiple sessions and provide extended opportunities for developing more considered drawings and/or paintings. This is a great option if you have experience working in a metals studio but can’t find a class that fits your schedule, or you just need to finish up a project. There are approximately 55 hours of monitored open studio hours available each week at varying times and runs Monday-Sunday.

5 Weeks Learn basic techniques for etching to create texture, patterns and images on metal. Experiment with a variety of resists such as paint pens, permanent ink stamp pads, PNP paper and adhesive film. Working with Liquid Enamels 5 Weeks

Learn to design and make colored patterns or images in a glass rod. How to layer the glass, pull the cane and slice the rod into small, usable pieces will be demonstrated. Circular, square or even miniature scenes can be created. Special tips and tricks to simplify this process will be discussed.

You will learn to experiment with liquid enamels. Techniques like dripping, sgraffito, crackles, inlays and marbling will be explored to create unique painterly effects with enamel. Creative Surface Development 3 Days

The Flexible Shaft may be our most versatile tool, yet for many it remains underutilized and poorly understood. Gain a deeper understanding of this marvelous tool and expand your vocabulary of flexible shaft applications. This one-day, demonstration only, workshop covers the machine itself and the use of burs, bits, grinding, shaping and finishing aids. Expect some innovative tricks as well.

Next to form, surface can define an object and give it depth and character. Uncover new ways to consider surfaces with heated, rolled, hammered and abraded finishes. You’ve learned the basics of printing with inks, now you’re ready to move to the next level. Printing with dyes is like printing with super saturated, gorgeous watercolors; full of endless, creative opportunities. In this class, you will get a crash course in printing with dyes, layering colors, dyeing fabric, creating resists and monoprints.

Create beautiful images with Katazome (rice paste resist printing) on fabric with various shades of blue. Make an indigo dye pot, cook the rice paste with traditional Japanese recipes, then cut stencil with your own simple designs. You’ll return home with experimental Katazome pieces as guide to more creative projects in the future.

Explore textile based sculptures, objects and design through alternative materials and traditional craft techniques. Experiment with techniques such as off-loom basket weaving, knitting, crocheting and netting to create structural forms and vessels as either functional pieces or decorative sculptures.

Step outside the (hat) box and get creative with felt hat blocking. Learn how to carve a form and create a one-of-a-kind headpiece. Basic hand sewing skills and finishing techniques will be discussed. You will leave with a sculptural, wearable felt hat and a custom block, along with the skill set to continue creating on your own.

Start in Ceramics to build two place settings out of terra cotta clay and decorate them with colorful underglazes. Then, head to Textiles to screen print matching placemats and napkins to complete your set. Want to bring your kids for a fun family project? Up to two children can accompany each adult for a reduced rate: families can make up to four settings. You must register children in person or by phone to receive the discounted rate.

Here’s your chance to take all those improvisational quilting techniques you’ve learned and turn them into a whole quilt, from start to finish. Design, piecing large sections together, quilting options and finishing and binding techniques will be discussed.

Draft a pattern from measurements and learn to sew pajama pants. The same method can apply to boxer shorts, if you prefer. Lil’Kidstreet A creative community for our youngest members: 0-4 years old

Lil’Kidstreet inspires your child’s natural delight for song, rhythm, color and texture. We combine visual art and music to encourage developmentally appropriate learning through original songs, musical instruments, rhythm-based activities, paint, clay and collage. These classes are the first steps in the foundation of exploration, creativity and enthusiasm for art and music. Each class is 45 minutes and includes both music and art. A caregiver participates with the child in these classes.

Students will focus on the silly, spooky and, strange! Students will create puppet creatures and engage in fun puppet play with their creations.

Art making and history collide is this process based course. Each week, students will examine the artwork of a different artist and learn about their process. Students will then emulate the masters to create their own lil’ masterpiece. A caregiver participates with the child in these classes.

Bonjour! Come and share a fun experience with a native Parisian and learn the French language through songs, round dances, nursery rhymes, books and art activities. Kids and parents will explore basic French words, phrases and culture.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative retreats, visiting artist workshops, and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
