Explore personal stories, dreams and myths in hand-built clay forms. Learning to form, texture and finish work enables your ideas to come to life. Each class includes time for students to share insights, inspirations or questions. In the final session, your work is viewed and discussed in terms of the dreams, myths or stories expressed. What story do you have to tell? Learn handbuilding techniques to develop your ideas into clay sculpture while maturing your creative thinking process. By using research materials and asking appropriate questions, you will bring clarity to your story. This group shares ideas and process development with each other. All levels welcome. Thursday 1-4pm

INTERMEDIATE HANDBUILDING
Begin in the 3D print lab where you will explore fundamental modeling, pattern generation and printing techniques. Printed prototypes will be used to create molds so you can create multiple ceramic tiles. Approaches for finishing final tiles will covered.
If you have basic throwing skills and want to learn about handbuilding, this is the class for you. Throw pots and embellish with handbuilt elements, throw forms and use sections of them in your handbuilt vessels. Coils, slabs and pinch pots can add another dimension to your thrown work.
Build upon existing skills to take your sculptural or functional work to a new level of construction and complexity. Develop ideas and expand your style using the methods of handbuilding— pinch pot construction, slab building and coiling. Become more proficient with the use of molds, slab rollers and extruders.

Explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. MOSAICS WITH ARTREACH (5 WEEKS)
To celebrate Lillstreet’s 40th anniversary and ArtReach’s 25th, help us design and install a mosaic to adorn the walls at Lillstreet. This collaborative project introduces beginners to mosaic making, which includes design and composition, materials and adhesives, cutting and layout and the grouting process. In addition, students will create a small project to take home. No prior art experience necessary. Material fee includes all materials and tools. A portion of the class fee will benefit ArtReach. INTERFERENCE (10 WEEKS)
Interference is a sculptural hand building course designed to confront habitual modes of working. Classes will involve a number of obstructions where the techniques you rely on to create will be challenged. Out of the process you should expect to develop new methods of building. The class will encourage post-firing finishes and emphasize context and exhibition.

Analyze the critical steps necessary to create dynamic and inventive ceramic works utilizing the potter’s wheel. Explore the idea of “painting with fire” by employing the atmospheric firing process of Lillstreet’s urban soda kiln. You will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time.

TRADITIONAL FIGURE SCULPTURE (10 WEEKS)
Working weekly from a nude model, you will take a methodical approach to sculpting the figure. You may choose to sculpt a head, torso or full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, body proportions, poses and gesture. Building techniques and observational skills will be emphasized. This class is designed primarily for students who want to develop specific ideas, refine techniques and pursue independent projects.
Shipping pottery doesn’t need to be stressful. You will discuss time-tested methods for safely sending their pots out into the world. Topics cover the choosing of packing materials, wrapping of pots, and selection of shipping service. This is a hands on workshop, so you will need to bring one pot under 6 inches to pack and ready for shipping.

BUILDING SKILLS IN BRONZE

POWDER COATING
Finally, you can fashion amazing, personalized metal art for a fraction of the cost of sterling and without many of the hassles of traditional metalsmithing. Bronze clay is the newest ‘flavor’ of metal clay, and is available in a variety of hues. This course covers countless techniques using bronze, with intention to grow with the skills of each artist.
Learn the basics of working with resins to add color and interest to your metal pieces. You will be creating metal forms (both closed and open backed) that can hold resin. It can be used to add color or suspended objects. You will experiment with mixing pigments to create color and pre-colored resins.
Learn basic techniques for etching to create texture, patterns and images on metal. Experiment with different resists such as spray paint, paint pens, permanent ink stamp pads, PNP paper, nail polish and adhesive film. Etched plates may also be used to texture metal using the rolling mill. Surface treatments will be discussed.
Powder coating is a fun and economical way to color your brass or copper jewelry or small sculptures. Learn to powder coat, layer colors, draw on the surface, mask off patterns and fabricate work to be powder coated. A respirator or mask is required.

Argentium Sterling (AS) is an alloy containing Germanium and more than 92.5% pure silver. It conducts heat differently than sterling, is highly tarnish-resistant, firescale-free and can be hardened in a toaster oven or kiln. Argentium is more malleable and easier to granulate, fold form and fuse than sterling. Methods for annealing and hardening will be demonstrated. Samples or finished pieces can be created.

Generate dynamic multimedia imagery through collage. Experience new ways to compose space, work with found materials, think critically about material choices and develop abstract imagery from representational sources. This class is great for beginning collage artists who need a place to start, as well as experienced artists who want to find a fresh approach for their work.
Like Manet, we will learn the elements of painting directly in color from a still life. Emphasis will be placed on learning to see the form, value and edge relationships, developing all the parts of the painting simultaneously and composing a picture. This course is best pursued in oil paint, though pastel is acceptable. You’ll receive individual instruction catered to your level.

Using oil paints, learn foundation techniques and relationships needed to successfully paint wet-on-wet. Topics include the connection between shape, value and hue in creating definition, drawing with a brush and strategies. It will liberate you from drawing outlines and filling them in with color. Meet new friends while learning embroidery with a contemporary spin. Each week practice stitches such as the chain stitch, bullion knot and turkey work onto a custom sampler designed and printed by the teaching artist. SURFACE DESIGN FOR PRODUCT
Master MX Chemical dye in all it’s forms. This class will cover immersion dyeing, printing with thickened dyes, resist/shibori techniques and ombre. You will leave with a collection of recipes plus an understanding of color theory. Material fee covers all dyes in class and open studio. You provide fabric, and should bring one yard of pre-washed 100% cotton to the first class.
Create digital patterns from your sketches and paintings using Photoshop and Illustrator. Submit your designs to printing companies to produce full color yardage, apparel or home decor goods. Resources provided for printing and products. You are encouraged to come to the first class with ideas or sketches and are responsible for fees associated with ordering their products.

Beginners to experienced printmakers will focus on integrating photographic images with paper and polyester plate lithography. Print repeatable images on leatherhard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Learn relief, screenprinting and paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly and indirectly to greenware. Transfer images, textures and patterns to your clay pieces using slips, stains and special inks. Most techniques can be adapted for earthenware.

In this follow-up to Beginning Photoshop you will focus on personal projects while benefiting from individualized guidance and feedback from the instructor. Photoshop is an advanced software program used by artists, graphic designers and photographers to create and manipulate graphic and photographic imagery. Learn the basics including brushes, selection tools, image adjustments and masks. This is a good follow-up to either First-Time or Beginning Photography, or can be taken on its own. Take Photoshop to a new level by creating collages with found images, personal photographs, typography and Photoshop’s painting and drawing capabilities. We will scan, draw, photograph, layer, paint and create. Use basic tools to select, resize, crop, cut and paste. Master the use of layers, alter color to create harmony and contrast, set image size for print and use masking techniques to create personal imagery.
Learn basic video editing with Adobe Premiere, create motion graphics or animations using After Effects and discover how together these two programs can create compelling media. You will have the chance to work on a personal project. A high capacity external or USB drive is a must.

KIDSTREET YOUNG ARTISTS BECOME EXPLORERS as they investigate a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity and build confidence in a historical, artistic community. Set the scene for Halloween with ghosts, goblins, pumpkins and witches. We’ll make a spooky graveyard in clay to decorate your table or porch or a candleholder to help light the way through your haunted house.
Responding to the ideas of sound and music, we’ll explore decorative themes that can be applied to clay forms. Reaching beyond the surface, we will also delve into the acoustic properties of clay by making small instruments like bells, flutes and drums.

HOLIDAYS AND MISSED CLASSES For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS Please Read Carefully CANCELLATIONS Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative Retreats, Visiting Artist Workshops, and Summer Camps have separate cancellation policies.
