There’s always a lot happening at Lillstreet, and this summer we’re burning with artistic energy. Aspiring young artists will be taking over a lot of the building as they join us for camp this summer. With dozens of different camps on offer, we know that a lot of great art will be created and inspiration will be found to carry our young artists into school in the fall. We also have a lot of new classes and creative retreats for adults this summer, and the new Loft space provides a great space for private groups, businesses, community organizations, and arts-based organizations to come together to reach their fullest creative potential. Community has always been the cornerstone of Lillstreet, the reason that we do what we do. Connecting to the broader arts community in Chicago is the next step, and we’re excited by the opportunities available to us and the connections we can make. The Emerging Artists Lecture Series continues this summer, with talks by Marianna Milhorat, Nathan Vernau, and Mike Gibisser on the schedule. Other events will be added as well, so be sure to regularly check our website for the latest news. Upcoming gallery exhibitions include the return of “Art & the Urban Garden,” our first photography specific show featuring work by 25 regional artists, “Midwest Contemporary,” and “A House is not a Home,” featuring work by our outgoing group of Artists-in-Residence. We’ll also feature new jewelry handcrafted by featured artists Heejin Hwang, Michelle Starbuck, Mary Laskey, and Stacey Lee Weber. Whether you want to make a new friend in class, gain a new perspective in the studio, enliven your team in a creative professional development workshop, or find the perfect gift in the gallery, we want to be sure that you have the best we can offer. LILLSTREET’S LONG-ESTABLISHED clay department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding, and sculpture. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firing, and state-of-the-art equipment in our generous open studio hours.

( 5 WEEKS ) Not ready for the 10 week commitment? Try your hand at a variety of clay techniques, and learn the basics of handbuilding and wheelthrowing. You will learn to center the clay on the wheel as you begin to throw the basic forms of mugs and bowls, learn to trim, and then glaze your pots. Handbuilding projects might include pinch pot bowls, bud vases or small serving trays. This is not a prerequisite for the 10 week Beginning Wheelthrowing or Handbuilding classes. Beginning students should plan to purchase a clay tool kit ($20). Includes 12 pounds of clay.

This class will center on rituals of every day eating and the making of hand made vessel(s) to meld the experience. The context of discussions will include exploring your own history of food, family and the use of local or homegrown ingredients. Students will be encouraged to explore and share their perspective on the hottest topics of food systems, eating, and growing while creating hand built, functional vessels for their own use. A Guided Tour “behind the scenes” of a meat market will be the class field trip this summer! The class will culminate in a summer feast as an expression of the best of what the season brings (one guest per student).

This class will focus on sets and forms that reflect summer activities such as picnics, festive drinking and eating, and the abundance of fresh foods. Projects may include berry bowls, tumblers and pitchers for iced drinks, punch bowls and ladles, lanterns and votives for backyard parties, ice cream/sundae bowls, etc. At the end of the term we will serve food in our creations. We will also focus on various surface techniques such as slip painting, stamping, appliques and glazing. Students are encouraged to bring in their ideas.

SIMPLY SODA: BEGINNING ADVANCED TOPICS IN SODA SODA FIRING: POUR, SIP, SAVOR: THE ART OF ( 10 WEEKS ) DRINKING Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of Lillstreet’s soda kiln. You’ll make pots for the soda kiln, and weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will increase your knowledge of more complex forms. You’ll also learn the uses of soda slips and glazes, and the class will make the soda firing process accessible and understandable. Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, introduction to firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required. ( 10 WEEKS ) Have you had some soda firing experience but want fine-tune your work for the exciting atmosphere of the kiln? Both wheel throwers and hand builders will learn how to utilize the uniqueness of this firing to make their work stand out from the rest. Focusing demonstrations and our discussion on pouring and drinking vessels, we will discover the finer points of making pots for the soda kiln. Come with a thirst for great pottery and leave with a new appreciation for soda-fired ceramics! Participation in all stages of the process, including some kiln loading, firing, and unloading outside of class time, is required. Prerequisite: two sessions of Simply Soda or instructor’s permission. Wednesday 7-10pm

SCULPTING WITH THE POTTERS WHEEL ( 10 WEEKS ) Students will use the wheel to create sculptural objects and learn to assemble forms from thrown components. Weekly demonstrations will be accompanied by image presentations. Demonstrations include replicating non-ceramic objects, post firing surface techniques, and low fire glazes. Sunday 10am-1pm

The focus of this class is figurative work. Students will explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. There will be class discussions on surface treatment for sculpture. A model will be used as needed and fee collected in class. All levels welcome.

Choose five consecutive weeks within the term and an instructor to offer individual tutelage for one hour per week. Fee does not include clay or open studio time outside of the five weeks. Approval of the program coordinator, Karen Avery, required.

MAKING UNDERGLAZE CHALKS AND PENCILS

SODA FIRED HERB POTS

( 1 Day )

Seamlessly make a chunk of clay into a richly textured herb pot. That’s right- you will make your vessel by pushing and expanding the solid clay from inside to outside, never using a cutting tool to make a slab for the walls. Use Soda Slips for color and texture, as these herb pots will not be glazed, but will experience the transformation of the Soda Kiln. Trays will be fired Cone 10 to ensure flatness.

CERAMIC COCKTAILS

This workshop will be for the student looking for new ways to address the surfaces of their work. Underglaze chalks and pencils are another way to add imagery, color and depth for those wanting to adapt drawing techniques to their pieces. KOKESHI DOLLS IN CLAY ( 1 Day ) Kokeshi (pronounced ko-keshee) are Japanese dolls, from northern Japan. They are handmade characterized by a simple trunk and an enlarged head with a few thin, painted lines to define the face. The body is painted in a floral design. One characteristic of Kokeshi dolls is their lack of arms or legs. The bottom is marked with the signature of the artist. Learn to hammer, fold and manipulate copper into threedimensional forms without soldering. Enhance these amazing metal structures be applying enamels (ground glass) and firing with a torch. Rich colors and exquisite surfaces are the result! Fold forming and torch firing are both very direct techniques that will enable you to see results of your efforts very quickly. This multilevel class explores the three-dimensional possibilities of hard waxes for carving and soft waxes for modeling. Students can expect to complete two small pieces, such as rings, charms, or miniature sculptures. RETICULATED OBJECTS ( 10 week ) This class is focused on creating unique jewelry such as chains, pendants, earrings and findings through the technique of reticulation. Reticulation produces a ridged or rippling surface through controlled heating. The ridges of a reticulated surface are more pronounced than any other surface treatment, looking like a moonscape. Students will also learn how to fuse metal without soldering. Focus will be on the overall product including finishing and patinas. Materials may be purchased by instructor. ENAMELING WITH GRAPHITE WORKSHOP

( 1 DAY )

This workshop focuses on using the press to rapidly create forms in metal. We will design and cut a “matrix” or “silhouette” mold that can be used repeatedly in the hydraulic press to create a puffed or pillowed form in sheet metal. Then we will experiment with the many ways to use the molds to achieve a variety of formed metal pieces for multiple jewelry applications.

Create a unique new look for copper enamel designs by drawing with graphite pencils directly onto fired glass enamel surfaces. Drawing skills are helpful, but not essential. This little known technique is easy to learn and will reward students with a very diverse new skill to enhance their enamel designs. Students will learn the technique step-by-step to create small-scale sample pieces which may become stand alone art pieces or be incorporated into future jewelry projects.

HYDRAULIC PRESS: ADVANCED TECHNIQUES ( 1 DAY ) We will continue to push the possibilities of what the hydraulic press has to offer by pairing the machine with a thermoplastic and ceramic compound known as “Jett-Sett.” This workshop will focus on creating textures, forms, and surfaces in the “Jett-Sett” compound and then using these molds in the press to achieve fast, repeatable results in sheet metal. FAUX ENAMELING TECHNIQUES FOR COPPER CLAY ( 1 DAY )

FILIGREE PENDANT IN SILVER CLAY ( 1 DAY ) Filigree is the use of fine, lace like wires to create an ornamental, delicate or intricate design. We will be using fine silver metal clay to make this elegant filigree pendant and embellish it with dichroic glass for a splash of color. No soldering required! This course is perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike. By the end of the day, you’ll wear your fabulous creation home! All tools provided by the instructor. Materials will be available for purchase on the day of class. This project uses one small (1cm-ish) dichroic cabochon, 10g of lump silver clay, and 5g of silver syringe. Saturday June 22, 9am-5pm

Work with pure copper in the form of clay! The material is so malleable that we have the ability to shape and texture the copper clay into a pendant and earrings. No traditional metal fabrication techniques required! Once the copper is fired, color is added by using a UV Resin whose finished appearance greatly mimics enamel. SPECIAL WORKSHOPS SILVER GRANULATION: METHODS AND TECHNIQUES ( 2 DAYS ) Granulation is the process of fusing tiny metal spheres of silver or gold, in a decorative pattern, to a surface of the same metal. When making granulated jewelry, all connections are fused, not soldered. This weekend workshop will investigate and compare various ways of performing granulation. Simple torch firing methods as well as the use of kilns and fusion furnaces will be discussed. The emphasis will be on learning the “How’s” and “Why’s” of this ancient technique and it’s applications for the contemporary metalsmith. BEYOND THE BEZEL – CARVED AND PIERCED DECORATIVE SETTINGS

Anticlastic Raising with Kevin O’Dwyer

( 3 DAYS )

In this workshop you will learn the basics of anticlastic raising. A flat sheet of metal shaped by compressing its edges and stretching the center so the surface develops two curves at right angles to each other. Students will have a short time to practice each stage of demonstration before moving to the next exercise. The goal is for students to gain enough of a foundation to be able to continue creating on their own. By the end of workshop, students will have the opportunity to create a series of small sculptural forms that can be developed into jewelry, hollowware handles and sculptural forms.

Bezels can be far more than just a ring of metal enclosing a stone. This three day intensive workshop elevates the bezel into a self-supporting design element. With dividers, saw, and files, a bezel can become a skillfully decorated setting. Learn to transform a common thick walled bezel into the elaborately carved and pierced centerpiece of a jewel. Create alternative setting designs by articulating bezels into prongs, tabs, channels, serrated and scalloped patterns. Demonstration and instruction is followed by each participant’s hands-on exploration and adaptation of process and technique. The course curriculum covers forming, shaping, and soldering heavy stock into bezels; precision layout and execution of patterns and repetitive design elements; and setting stones with pushers, burnishers, hammer and punch. This is an intermediate level class with emphasis on the refinement of hand skills with traditional tools. This introductory class will cover the fundamentals of working with watercolors. Each class will focus on a basic watercolor practice beginning with how to use your brushes, the use of value and shape in composing a balanced composition and finishing up with color plans and mixing and its importance in establishing a cohesive painting. Have you ever wondered how a painting can make an apple look real or a vase look transparent? This class will study the still life using acrylic paint to create light and shadows, shapes and forms. You’ll learn about mixing colors and what is the best brush to use for your painting. Techniques such as layering, shading and some blending will be discussed. Students will begin using only black and white paint and then transition into color. Learn how to paint with wax in this multi-level class. Use pigments, damar crystals, various types of waxes as well as other ingredients to create multi-layered, heavily textured to paint on a variety of surfaces. Work with metals tools and special brushes as well as torches, heat guns and irons. Encapsulate additional materials and collage the surface. In this intermediate to advanced class, students will explore contemporary drawing through a mixture of traditional and nontraditional drawing materials and methods. Through projectbased assignments, we will draw from both life and imagination to create singular images and large scale works. As part of this process we will be looking at the work of contemporary artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns and Antoni Tapies. This class is best for students with drawing experience who would like to examine new ways of seeing and thinking about drawing. A materials list will be provided.

Designed for beginners to advanced students, this class will introduce the student to techniques to accurately render botanical subjects using graphite and watercolor. We will keep a sketchbook to record details and test techniques, then apply those skills to more considered and developed pieces. Some class periods will be spent at local conservatories practicing our artistry in the field.

Stretch the boundaries of your painting practice by working on a large scale. Going big will challenge your creativity and your body as you learn the tools and techniques needed for creating paintings on a 4 x 5 foot canvas or larger. Learn classical painting techniques from art history in this intermediate to advanced class by studying Rembrandt, Chardin, Van Eyck, and others. Directed projects will cover: wipeout and painting with a limited palette, grisaille, glazing, scumbling, and a la prima, direct painting. Repeating students apply these acquired skills by working from a costumed model over a two week pose. A small fee will be collected weekly to cover the cost of the model by those working at this level. A materials list is available online or from the front desk. This advanced class is for those who have had previous experience in oil painting. It is a good class for continuing students or those who haven’t painted for awhile and are looking for a fresh start. Students will work on individual paintings based on their own ideas or on assigned projects. The focus of the course is on improving core skills of representational painting. Emphasis is on individual development encouraged by one on one instruction and consultation. Students should be prepared to start on the first day with their own materials and own ideas.

DRAWING AND PAINTING THE NUDE FIGURE

( 10 Weeks ) Alla Prima, meaning “at once”, is a way of seeing, as much as a method. This intermediate/advanced oil painting class will teach you the alla prima technique of focusing on the big relations of shape, value, hue, and definition, draw with a brush, and paint wet into wet. It will liberate you from the coloring book way of drawing outlines and filling them in with color. Learn to see the alla prima way. The first half of the class will focus on still life and the last half on the human figure. Monday 6:30-9:30pm

This advanced class is for those who have had previous experience working from the nude model. Students are expected to have some competency in drawing or have completed Introduction to Portrait or Figure. In the 10 week course, poses are scheduled for two weeks so that a painting or drawing can be fully developed. The 5 week course will consist of 1, two-week and 1, three-week pose giving the students plenty of time to fully develop their work. I started off with a First Time Potter class in October 2010. So, almost 3 years.

How did you get started in art and why were you drawn to this medium? I can’t remember a time as a kid when I wasn’t working on some kind of art or craft project. I think creating something with my hands in just an inherent part of who I am. My degree is in photography and after a few years of working job where I was constantly on the computer - albeit creative programs like Photoshop and Illustrator- all day, I just wanted something super tactile and physical and ceramics is about as far in that direction as you can get.

What themes or issues do you address in your work? First and foremost, I’m very focused on form and the lines of my work and just making something that pleases my sense of balance and movement. I like to smudge the lines between serious and playful, motion and stability, art and function, what is beautiful and what is goofy.

How would you describe your working process? I sketch a lot -sometimes with clay, but mostly with pencil and paper. For me, drawing is often a meditation that leads to falling in love with a form. And It’s the quickest and most satisfying way for me to play with an idea- usually a line that physically feels good to draw also is the one that looks the best. After that, I make a paper pattern, or I just move straight to clay. Either way, the first iteration in clay usually gets tweaked- I’m trying to get the same form in my drawing and I might rework a section more than once or try a few different construction methods to see what works best. After that, I have a plan on how to create it again more quickly, but the editing never really ends...I’m always refining my forms and methods.

Which part of the creative process is most exciting or rewarding for you?

What compels you to create? It’s an investigation. There’s something that I need to figure out and I work on it until I feel settled and can move on to the next thing I need to understand. These days it’s pretty formal and based very much in craft and process and finding forms that please me- It’s very formal in comparison to work I’ve done in the past. It’s very indulgent, actually.

PRINTMAKING

There’s a moment when a piece comes together- maybe I had it planned out and and finally got it the way I wanted or maybe something unexpected happens that ties everything together in a way I hadn’t originally intended. It’s this moment where I’ve just learned something, but I don’t yet have the words to define it.

What is your ideal workspace? Sunny, spacious and quiet with lots of things to play with that I never have to put away.

How important is functionality to your art? Right now, I intend all of my work for use, but I hear from some people that they just like having the piece they own on display. Bringing someone enjoyment purely through the aesthetic qualities of the work is a perfectly fine function in my book.

Why be a part of an Art Center, specifically Lillstreet? Access to materials and equipment that would otherwise require a lot of space and money is one reason. Most people just don’t have that. And, I love Lillstreet’s open studio policy. It’s quite hard to make any kind of art without time to do it and a space to make it in. Lillstreet really understands that. Plus, the community is great – you’re never at a loss for feedback. Whatever problem I’m having, from trying to solve a glaze issue to how something is working formally or conceptually, there is someone among the community – teacher or fellow student – who can offer expert advice.

TEXTILES The Lillstreet Textile & Fiber Arts Department is a growing community interested in traditional and contemporary craft media. Our newly renovated sewing studio offers more class space and upgraded equipment including an industrial sewing machine, overlock and serger machines. Our print on fabric classes feature a remodeled

dark room with a state-ofthe-art UV vacuum exposure unit. Students also now have access to a computer station with a laser printer for prepping images! Students can achieve professional results in our bullet steamer when setting dyes, and the new dye station set up makes immersion dyeing more user friendly. Our student population is diverse- from professional artists who sell at artisan fairs, online shops, and consignment, to all levels of artists developing skills to develop their portfolio and continue their creative education. Gear up for warm weather and leave this class with at least one hand-made skirt and dress for the summer. Individualize each pattern by choosing your size and picking unique fabrics and embellishments. This class will reinforce beginner sewing skills while introducing basic pattern making. Students should bring in 3 yards of cotton fabric to the first class. No sewing experience needed!

Move beyond your basic ironon embroidery transfers and kits and create a one-of-a-kind piece of needlework that will be more than the running and back-stitches! In this class we won’t start with a blank piece of fabric, instead we’ll discuss as a class your project idea and come up with a plan to create a background surface dense with rich textures of fabric paints, appliqued fabrics, and machine and hand embroidery. This class was designed by and for First Time Embroidery students who wish to expand their contemporary embroidery

Have you taken First Time Sewing, and want to work on your own projects now? Want to learn how to use a serger for a more professional finish? Maybe you are a self-taught sewer, but would like some professional guidance. This class allows students to choose individual projects and work closely with the guidance of the instructor to complete oneof-a-kind sewing projects. Bonus topics covered: serger instruction, sewing machine feet attachments, button-hole stitches, and topics as they relate to student’s projects. Draw, transfer, carve and print your designs to create your own fabric in this crash course on easy repeat printing. Through the methods of hand block printing and the basics of stencil screenprinting, you’ll learn about both positive and negative images, and use traditional linoleum blocks, as well as newer materials that make the process more efficient, including silkscreens. ACID DYES ON SILK: IMMERSION AND PAINTING Create brilliant images on silk combining dyeing and direct painting applications. Students will learn the entire processes from designing, acid dye recipes, immersion and painting techniques. Paige Fetchen, Lillstreet’s Textile Department Resident Artist, will introduce students to contemporary and conceptual artists working within the textile/ fiber medium. Inspired by slideshows and presentations, students will construct soft sewn sculptures from everyday threedimensional objects. Introductory sewing topics will be covered alongside pattern making, fabric casting, machine and hand sewing. Final class project will be a completed soft sculpture to be displayed in the hallway gallery space. A resource list will be handed out during the first class.

One of the easiest ways to spruce up your home is with pillows. What better way to add that personal touch than by making your own! The first few weeks of the course will be in the print studio where you’ll learn basic screen printing techniques to transfer your designs onto fabric. Think monogram, abstract, nature - it’s up to you. Next, you’ll move to the sewing studio to be introduced to the basic sewing techniques needed to transform your fabulous fabric into an envelope-closure pillow to fill and proudly display in your home. Beginners welcome. A resource list will be provided on the first day.

( 10 WEEKS ) Wallpaper is making a fashionable come back! Printed fabric can be used as a temporary wall covering, achieving the same effect as paper but without the pain of installation and destruction of de-installation. What better way to engage in the new trend than by printing it yourself? This 10 week screen printing class will cover everything you need to know to be able to do just that: learn how to print large-scale pattern efficiently over enough yards of fabric to cover a desired area. We will look at the history of wallpaper, it’s contemporary incarnations and talk in depth about designing for interior spaces. The class will culminate by installing students’ work in the Lillstreet’s Gallery/Shop space and will remain on display for a number of weeks. Work in Lillstreet’s digital lab to easily create repeat patterns, color separations, and graphic images in preparation for screenprinting on fabric. Learn how to digitally generate imagery and manipulate photographs using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Students will have access to both the digital lab and Textile open studios. LAYERS, LAYERS: THE FINE ART PRINT ( 10 WEEKS ) Use this class to devote your printing practice to make something other than printed fabric blanks. Students will be encouraged to make multi-color fine art prints that are larger in scale and more complicated in registration and composition. Multiple screens and color separations will be used to create images larger than your traditional screens. Students should come prepared with images/sketches/ideas on the first night, as well as prepared to print in either ink or dye. Students will frame their artworks using canvas stretchers for a finished presentation of their fine art prints. ( 4 days ) Color rice paste resist printing, “Nassen”, is the contemporary application of Japanese rice paste resist technique for simultaneous color and resist. This technique has been applied onto kimonos dominantly in the early 20th century. Students will experience the entire process of color rice paste resist printing including making rice paste, color paste, applying pastes with various stamps onto silk. “Katagami” (cut-out-stencils), “tsutsu” (pastry-like cone with brass tip), and other various applications will create textures and various degrees of resists. LOCAL COLOR ( 2 days ) In this two-day workshop, students will learn about natural dye plants that can be collected or grown in the Chicago area. We start by learning the foundations of dyeing and the mordanting process, and then continue on to experiment with obtaining color from locally grown and collected plants. Each student will make a sample book of colors in addition to dyeing their own fibers. Discussion topics will include how to start a natural dye garden. How To Photograph Artwork

Learn about your camera and take better pictures as we learn about digital photography. We’ll start with the essential camera controls like ISO, aperture, shutter speed, shooting modes, and focus. Then we’ll put these lessons into practice with some in-class exercises. We’ll discuss composition and how to shoot thematically. To round out the class, there will be a demonstration of editing images using Lightroom software and the basics of printing. Students should bring a digital camera (DSLR preferred) with a fully charged battery and memory card with plenty of space.

This class will teach students the essentials of working with Photoshop. We’ll start by learning the workspace and all the tools, including brushes, paint, and flow. Next we’ll edit imagery on screen with adjustments such as levels, curves, hue/saturation, and how to selectively apply those adjustments. We’ll composite different image elements together. And we’ll conclude with a lesson on printing. Students should bring a flash drive with 5-10 images to edit. Basic computer skills required.

InDesign software allows you to easily bring together type, graphics, and photographs, to create excellent layouts. Learn to design business cards, posters, and more, in this introduction to this software and its capabilities. Basic computer skills required.

Describe your working process. It’s much like making a small independent film, I suppose. I first brainstorm an idea for a story - sometimes inspired by a place, or a situation. Then I do a lot of writing and sketching, eventually story-boarding the images. I cast actors, scout locations, and find props and costumes. When I shoot it’s a real production with lights and everything. And every time I’m scared to death it won’t come together.

What kind of investigations occur during your creative process? Many of my series have blurred the line between fact and fiction. I do a lot of historical research, sometimes about a place, or a person, or an event. I will find documents that relate to the period or something in the story. I like to have the viewer unsure about whether they’re looking at something real or imagined, and thus suspend their disbelief so they can be immersed in the narrative.

Which part of the creative process is most exciting/ rewarding for you?

How did you get started in art? I was always a creative and imaginative kid growing up. I liked drawing things a lot and showing my friends. In high school and college I got interested in photography and decided it was the medium that best suited my aesthetic.

What compels you to create?

So many parts! I love the moment when I know what the idea for a new project is. I love seeing the first images and knowing that I’ve got something special. But probably my favorite part is the exhibition, when I can look at all of a project together and see the public’s response to it.

What is art’s role in your life? Art is an outlet for ideas, a way to express myself, and a constant conversation with the world around me. I find so many fulfillments in making art and looking at art.

I like to make arresting images and I like to tell stories. My art is very narrative and deals with themes of loneliness and the supernatural.

What is your ideal workspace?

Why were you drawn to this medium? I love photography because it had a reality about it. The inherent believability of photography is its power. And there’s a neat, finished aspect of a photograph that I respond too.

What themes/issues do you address in your work? My primary themes are loneliness and the supernatural. For the past ten years or so I have been creating images that involve spirits visiting the living world. For me they’re not creepy or horrific, but lonely souls. The people they encounter are lonely as well, and the meeting gives each entity some comfort.

How does Lillstreet’s community aid in the production of your work? The studio facility we’ve created at Lillstreet is outstanding. These days I do much of my shooting, editing, and printing at Lillstreet. Plus, the building and community are so full of creative energy! I can feel it when I walk in the door. You can’t help but be inspired by people involved in the creative process all around you.

One-day Creative Retreats at Lillstreet Loft Take a day-off from the hustle and bustle of city living, and restore and retreat with Lillstreet! Our one-day retreats offer you the chance to relax and renew as you immerse yourself in the creative process. Each retreat will be a unique combination of a 75-minute yoga class (for all levels), healthy catered lunch and three-hours of hands-on art instruction. Everyone will leave the retreat with handmade artwork!

The Art of Asian Ink Painting Retreat Learn the traditional art of Asian sumi-e ink painting, and the symbolism behind it. Experiment with basic sumi-e brush strokes and create small paintings, then take your new brush stroke skills and apply them to silk to create your own colorful hand-painted silk scarf. Enjoy the lovely summer weather while learning to paint “en plein air,” or in the open air. This portion of the retreat will take place on Lillstreet’s beautiful rooftop deck. Many French Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet advocated en plein air painting, and much of their work was done outdoors. Painting from life is a pursuit unlike any other painting technique, come learn how and create a painting of the urban landscape from the relaxing roof deck!

o t e m WelcoreeTt SUMMER ART CAMPS Lillst This summer, campers at Lillstreet Art Center will venture into the wonderful workings of the universe in Cosmic Constructions, travel back in time in Egyptian Camp, get their hands dirty in wheelthrowing, create their own utensils in Forge, Fire, and Feast, bring their imagination to life in Movie Making, and go on a safari of the photographic kind. Summer camp has never been this exciting, educational, and fun! For over twenty summers, we have hosted art camps for kids, watching young campers grow into professional artists along the way. During the twelve weeks of summer, the three floors of our facilities will turn into an urban campground hosting over 100 campers each week, eager to explore the magical world of art while making lasting friendships and lifelong skills. Campers ages 3.5-18 have a diverse selection of artistic mediums to explore. The activities in every camp change for students each week, providing a fresh understanding of art and perspective for individuals. We hope your young ones will join us for summer camps this year. Whether they stay all day, or just a few hours, campers will have an unforgettable experience at our summer camps.

Lunches We are a peanut-free camp! Please do not send your child with any peanut products in his or her lunch. All camps beginning before noon will have a lunch break. You may send a lunch or order one for your child. Refrigeration canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be provided for bag lunches, so please pack accordingly. Cafe lunches are $35/week and should be turned in no later than 5pm on the Friday before your camp begins. All forms turned in after the deadline will be $45 per week. PARK Weather permitting, we bring the children to the park to play. Learn the exciting skill of wheelthrowing with children your own age. We will throw for 1 1/2 hours every day and do handbuilding projects to finish out the class. You will create little pots with little hands and love them when you take them home.

Use a variety of materials to explore individual interests and themes while creating original works of art. We’ll encourage artistic self-direction while exploring individual artistic visions with guidance from the instructor. On Monday, students will work on hand-built clay projects as well as collaborate with the teacher to determine the curriculum for the rest of the week. Students will use a wide variety of materials including paint, plaster, fiber and recyclables and experimentation is encouraged. SUPERHEROES With great artistic talent comes great creation. The world needs new superheroes, and in this class you can learn how to create them. You don’t have a moment to lose as you pick the mask, cape, vehicle, powers and origin of the latest, greatest adventurer of them all: yours. Working with a professional illustrator, you will learn proportion, perspective, and foreshortening so you’ll know how your character looks from the side, back, and even a bird’s eye view. A “premiere” (with popcorn!) will take place the last afternoon of camp and each student will get a burned DVD of the movie to take home.

Venture outside and explore the natural world! We’ll observe nature with magnifying glasses and binoculars, then make art with recycled materials inspired by our observations. We’ll spend Tuesday at Northerly Island sketching, exploring, and creating site-specific, found-object creations.

Do you like the look of handstitching on clothing or other pieces of fabrics? Embroidery is a craft that involves basic materials, a needle and thread, to create rich textured images. Each camper will practice stitches on a modern-day sampler, and then work on one personal embroidered image onto a fabric of their choosing. All materials provided.

Do you have visions of sewing your own clothes or being a fashionista? Maybe you want to learn how to use a sewing machine to alter or fix some of your clothes already hanging in your closet? Campers will start from the beginning, mastering the basics of the sewing machine by learning different stitches and seams. You’ll get to design and create your own bag and apron! EGYPTIAN CAMP In collaboration with the Oriental Institute Museum, spend a week exploring the arts of ancient Egypt. Create pottery, jewelry, and paintings like those found in the palaces and tombs of the pharaohs! INSPIRED BY NATURE Did you know that the bones of a pigeon weigh less than its feathers? If you enjoy learning about flora and fauna, this is the camp for you. We’ll spend the week discovering exciting details about the natural world and converting our new knowledge into works of art. We’ll use a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography (to name a few). This camp will include a one day field trip that visits both the Lincoln Park Conservatory and the Lincoln Park Zoo on Tuesday.

HANDS ON CLAY Do you love to hand-build? Want an entire week to devote to learning techniques to make both functional and sculptural art using terracotta clay? Then this is the class for you!

Ages 10-14 A WORLD IN A BOX: JOSEPH CORNELL Learn about and take inspiration from Joseph Cornell’s boxes and games made from found objects and collaged images. Cornell’s boxes were narratives of magical worlds, others were games, and others still were simply assemblages of interesting objects, clippings, and art materials. In this camp, we would visit the Art Institute to see and study the art of Joseph Cornell, and then make our own Cornell boxes. The students would design a concept, find and make objects for inside of the box, decorate the outside of the box, and emerge with their own interpretations of Cornell’s fun and interesting style. SCREENPRINTED SCHOOL CLOTHES Make personalized tshirts, bags, or iron-on patches with your very own printed designs! Students will learn about the photo-emulsion process, as well as registration for multi-color prints. One t-shirt is provided for each camper, and there are tote bags and other fabric blanks available for purchase. Parents are encouraged to help students look for tshirts or other fabrics at home. PRIMITIVE PAINTERS We will visit the Field Museum to see this exhibit of the cave art of ancient Lascaux to see a reproduction of caves filled with paintings from over 17,000 years ago! We will create our own tools, mix our own paint, and make sculpture and paintings on natural materials while learning about these amazing cave painters. CLAYMATION CAMP (2 WEEKS) Learn how to make an original claymation movie in this genuine multimedia camp. This all-day camp will focus on a number of art disciplines: armature construction, hand building, drawing, scenery construction, storyboard planning, script writing, amongst others. Ages 12-16 METALS CAMP Create cool metal jewelry or small sculpture out of brass and copper sheet & wire. Students will learn various skills, such as hammering, forming, texturing and polishing, leading to the creation of their own designs!

Learn proper cutting, layout, design and firing procedures for creating fused glass cabochons. Students will then learn how to make basic bezels and simple prong settings for their glass creations. Saw-piercing, texturing, soldering and cold connections will be discussed.

WAX CARVING & CASTING CAMP

This camp will explore the ancient technique of wax carving and lost wax casting, a process that’s over 2000 years old! We can create rings, charms, pendants and even small sculpture using both soft and hard waxes for building and carving. We will then melt our wax models and cast our treasures into bronze.

Follow Joe Tighe, Lillstreet’s resident photographer and former outdoor camp director on a week long safari through the ravenswood neighborhood. We’ll spend the first day of camp making sure everyone knows how to use their cameras and creating our safari teams. Our next three days, we’ll spend hunting down some elusive imagery in the historic neighborhood of Ravenswood. Our last day together, we’ll showcase our story. Are you game?

Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee.
