Mosaic 2011 We caught up with Mosaic founder Denise Mahmud to find out more about her African Diaspora lifestyle event which is taking place this month at the Africa Centre. WORDS: SOPHIA A Jackson

showcasing the best of established and emerging local and international African, African-Caribbean and African Diaspora businesses. Mosaic was set up by Native New Yorker Denise Mahmud. Mosaic 2011 was due to be held in October originally. Why did you change the date? A lot of exhibitors were asking for it to be nearer to Christmas. What is the concept behind Mosaic? To promote African and Caribbean and SME businesses that may not have funds to do existing shows in London. How has the journey been so far? It’s been very good but as it’s a new event with the economic climate it was scary. What makes us different is that we’ll help promote exhibitors throughout the year until the next show.

Mosaic is a great opportunity for people to see these businesses and discover their originality and creativity. 6 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

designer originally and my company Moixa has shown internationally since 2007. I was going to all these shows and I noticed that African descent companies were not there out of 400 companies. I studied political science and finance and did market research for five years so I have a strong business background. I want it to be an annual event and grow into different sections. Tell us about some of the exhibitors featured in this year’s Mosaic. We have a fantastic artist called Trevor Jarvis, his work ranges from digital printing to oil paints and it’s quite interesting.

Some of his inspiration came from his visits to Ghana. We also have VDelicious who make egg free and dairy free cupcakes. There’s also Kizala, a shop in Croydon who were one of the first shops in England to sell multicultural gifts and cards. How will visitors be entertained? On Sunday we have Randolph Matthews who is a singer and musician – his music is really… You have to see to understand, I can’t compare him to anyone in the world. Pham Luanwas born in Hanoi in 1954. As a graduate of Hanoi’s Teachers Training College, Luan is a self-taught artist who has by reputation become one of Hanoi’s most celebrated painters. As the chronicler of Hanoi, Luan’s passion for his subject is unsurpassed and poignant. Three generations of his family have lived in the same street, only a few minutes from the studio Luan built 13 years ago. Inspired by Impressionism, Luan’swork offers a fleeting and intimate glimpse of Hanoi’s atmospheric old quarter, ever diminishing in the wake ofmodernisation. Luan exhibits regularly in Hong Kong, the USA and Europe and is represented in the permanent collection of the National Fine Art Museum of Vietnam and the private collections of HRH The Duke of York. The Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2011 offers a unique opportunity to see 60 works by some of the most exciting contemporary portrait photographers from around the world. Through editorial, advertising and fine art images, the entrants have explored a range of themes, styles and approaches to the contemporary photographic portrait, from formal commissioned portraits of public figures to more spontaneous and intimate moments capturing friends and family. This year the competition attracted over 6,000 submissions from 2,506 photographers ranging from gifted amateurs and talented young students to established professionals. The selected works for the exhibition, many of which are on display for the first time, include the five prizewinners and the winner of the ELLE commission. Dec Letter Exchange – Inside Graffiti Before his studies in graphic design at Camberwell School of Art had confirmed his particular commitment to the letterform, Errol Donald had long been fascinated by the visual presentation of letters and words, and in particular, their ability to both inform and express different aspects of culture. Throughout a professional career spent in graphic design and brand

development, Errol’s journey has followed an unconventional path, in many ways, similar to the journey taken by the graffiti art movement, of which he is acknowledged as a key figure and advocate. By citing the influences that inspired him while working as part of The Chrome Angelz during the 1980’s, he will chart the course of a journey that has seen him navigate the creative divide and changing attitudes, into new territories and exciting point in his career. Sharing his unique, and personal experiences, he will offer insights into the origins of graffiti culture; it’s pioneers and the on going style wars waged by a community of artists who continue to explore the possibilities of the letterform. uccess in the art world seems to be a mystery for a lot of us artists, but Rebecca FontaineWolf plainly and simply understands that you just have to keep putting yourself out there and learn what works best for you. There is no magical formula. It takes work, dedication, practice, tenacity and a will of iron.

Rebecca, how long have you been a professional artist? I have been selling work since my degree show which was in 2004. I worked in a gallery for a year and then after that, I really started doing it professionally and full time as well. What are your secrets to success? I would say I just threw myself in at the deep end I think. I worked at this gallery for a year and I was just basically working on a till and it made me miserable. I had my studio, but I didn’t have the time or energy after work to go to the studio and somebody told me about doing promotional work, which is sort of like giving out leaflets and samples and doing bits and bobs and you can do that as and when you please, you know, when you need it and it pays quite well and I just thought well I am going to try it. I’m going to do it. I’m gonna stop working and do these odd jobs here and there so that I can just concentrate on my work and do it and I think that was it, just saying yes, I am committing to it. I want this, so I’m just gonna do it, give it a go.

Was there anything else in addition to that? It’s one thing making the decision that your going to go ahead and make a commitment to doing art full time, but were there any other specific things that you did that you feel kind of catapulted you to the point where you started to actually sell work and attract dealers? Just getting myself out there really. I think just doing art fairs, just being online, seeing what opportunities are out there, exhibiting stuff in pubs and just sort of bit by bit starting to show work and get it out there. I think that’s all it was really and then from each thing something else comes. My mother is an artist which sort of helps as well but she works a lot more on commission, she’s a portrait painter primarily, so although she is an artist, her path is quite different than my path. So although I could get support and some advice from her, I still had to figure it out for myself. What about long term goals? Where do you see yourself in five years? I can say where I hope to see myself and it’s about having a permanent gallery space and being represented by one gallery exclusively and yes, just having that. Having solo shows with them and group shows with them. Not just in terms of status, but also, sometimes it gets really complicated when you’ve got work in

I think what every artist wants which is to be able to create something lasting, something that has a lasting impact on people that will be remembered for years to come. different places and your working with different people. It would also be nice to have somebody else who deals with all the business side of things and to be in a place where I can just focus purely on painting, purely on work and have somebody else

do all the other stuff. That’s ideally where I would want to be in five years time. And your ultimate dream for success? Ultimate dream would be I think what every artist wants which is to be able to create something lasting, something that has a lasting impact on people that will be remembered for years to come past your lifetime and will sort of play a big part in art history. US BBQ chef King Ashbell McElveen recently joined the kitchen at Brasa, in Fulham Broadway introducing his creation of a unique dining experience. The menu is complete with traditional New Orleans recipes infused with tasty ingredients enough to lick your plate clean! There are two menus available, the brunch which offers a selection of breakfasts and the supper which has enough things on the menu for a big appetite. On arrival at Brasa we were welcomed to dine on the first floor of the three story building which boasted a modern dining suite, stylish lounge bar and even a rooftop garden. With sounds of Bob Marley in the background, my guest and I chose fruity cocktails complete with passion fruit, raspberries, peach and ginger in preparation for some real soul food. As a starter the waitress recommended the seafood gumbo; which was a real invitation to South Carolina. After which my guest chose a full Mexican breakfast that included corn bread, traditional chilli with guacamole and rice topped with

Something of a familiar addition to most High Streets now, when it first opened its Shoreditch branch a decade ago the Lime restaurant review: Patara Fine Thai Cuisine Words: Sophia A Jackson | Lime rating: From the minute you step into Soho restaurant Patara, the first thing that hits you is that familiar aroma of fine dining Thai style - a heady mix of lemongrass and other room engulfing aromas. The main reason for this taste bud treat is to sample the Maldron Oyster festival which is on until the end of this month. On offer is either three or six of the Maldron Oysters served raw or cooked with a Thai twist accompanied by mint, coriander, lemongrass, Thai vinaigrette, lemon and crisp shallots or deepfried in soda batter served in its shell with beansprout and chilli sauce. We opted for three each of the famous aphrodisiac appetisers, washed down with champagne, naturally. My guest was a newbie

In commemoration for the opening; Lime magazine caught up with the award-winning chef to talk about how his food is influenced by history and how he combines his love for travel around the globe in his recipes.

Ashbell so diners can experience traditional southern delicacies mixed with a culinary twist. He joined the kitchen at Brasa and devised two menus comprising of brunch and supper recipes. What is it about Soulful Sundays that is so different and unique? Well it is this whole concept of global soul. Literally soul and soul food is a term that came from James Brown “I’m black and I’m proud.” For me it is wrapping up American soul and marrying it with global soul. I think the restaurant scene is a bit poncy and fake. On a Sunday you’ll get the same thing in every pub, so people can’t choose a selection. Where did you draw your inspiration from when you created the menu? When I created the menu I was thinking about the food I grew up with and how good it was and all the flavour, how we knew

the farmer that grew the food, and who cooked the food. I tried to bring some of that back to table, so I can tell you where everything you’re served comes from. In the peach cobbler the American southern biscuits used are influenced by the English scone and Irish soda bread. It’s soft and flakey and not hard like a cracker. We use it for savoury or for sweet. Had becoming a chef been a passion of yours from a young age? Cooking is my God’s gift. I have a master’s degree in psychology. With cooking, I grew up in a family where there’s always good food. There were not a lot of restaurants, so people created functions and dinner parties at home. Events were catered in the south by someone, where someone in my family did the cooking, for like the congressmen and senators. My family has a long history of professional chefs and whiskey makers. My father was a masterful cook; he and my grandfather taught me

how to make whisky. I’m marketing my own whisky here; it’s a white whisky that’ll be coming out next year.

could go to India on the bus; it cost the equivalent of £27. It didn’t matter that it broke down 10 or 15 times, we just kept going.

Tell us about one of the best meals you’ve ever had? Well the best French meal was cooked for me by a bare foot Haitian woman in Porto Prince. She couldn’t speak French; only spoke Creole so that was the best French meal I’ve ever had.

When you’re not in the kitchen... I love music; I love art, architecture and design. I have my hand at making furniture.

What is your signature dish? The bourbon smoked turkey thigh. The bourbon is secure in the marinade and the turkey is smoked which is not a process that anybody does here. You have travelled around the world a lot, where are some of the unforgettable places that you have visited? I’ve travelled to Thailand, Vietnam, Madagascar, West and East Africa, the Caribbean, South America, the Americas and Canada. When I was a student in France, Paris was the best place to study from. You

Where do you like to dine when you’re in London? I live with an Asian family from East Africa, from Nairobi. I’m thrilled as I get to eat incredible food. When I like to have a nice meal, there is a Chinese restaurant in Chiswick that make

Afridiziak Theatre News review, Driving Miss Daisy Afridiziak rating: | Words: Sophia A Jackson The Pulitzer-Prize winning play Driving Miss Daisy by Alfred Uhry will be remembered by many as the Academy Award winning film [1989] of the same name, starring Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd. Now the box office and audience hit has transferred from Broadway to London’s West End. A stellar cast who hook you in straight from their opening lines leads this timeless classic about African-American chauffeur, Hoke Coleburn [James Earl Jones, 80], Jewish, Daisy Werthan [Vanessa Redgrave,74] and her son Boolie Werthan [Boyd Gaines].

A Place at the Table is a powerful theatrical response to the on-going troubles in Burundi, Rwanda and the African Great Lakes Region. Featuring an all-female cast, predominantly from Central/East Africa, this intimate, immersive production explores the shockwaves from the 1993 assassination of Burundi’s President Melchior Ndadaye backwards through colonialism to ancient legend and forwards to the Rwandan genocide and the continuing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each audience member is invited to take a place at a large table alongside the performers and to eat, drink and join a remarkable shared act of remembering and questioning. Drawing on a range of sources including interviews with refugees and campaigners to UN 14 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

Daisy is a cranky, control-freak and fiercely independent, and despite her age, the 72-year-old widow is reluctant to give up driving after a car accident. Her more liberal son employs Hoke convinced of his suitability based on his past employment record. Hoke is humble and gallant but doesn’t let Daisy walk all over him and knows when to stand up for himself. Daisy is not afraid to share her reservations at having Reports, A Place at the Table uses the powerful medium of verbatim theatre to create a uniquely personal experience that explores the subtle and dangerous relationship between history, identity and violence. Burundi is a country with a rich but often tragic past – a tragic past that touched

an African-American in her house who she doesn’t know as she makes plenty of assumptions and voices her prejudices. At first her relationship with Hoke is somewhat prickly but over time, almost two and a half decades in fact, she warms to him and in a touching moment, where it dawns on her that he’s her only friend.

themes of the play and as Hoke says, things have changed but not really that much. There’s not time to delve deep into social issues and race relations but the story does highlight the racism faced by African-Americans and Jews living in Atlanta during the time of the Civil Rights movement and Martin Luther King.

The set is sparse but with clever lighting and video imagery; stills are effectively used and projected to provide a photographic backdrop for scene changes such as the shop where they go to buy groceries or ‘driving’ scenes.

This bittersweet drama, which is essentially a tale of a blossoming friendship between two people who are growing old, packs a powerful punch in a short and snappy, interval-free 90 minutes. All three of the cast give outstanding performances and I urge you not to miss this charming, thought-provoking, witty production, which is here for a limited period only. Talking of driving; although the ‘car’ is the prop used for many of the scenes it’s actually just a wheel and the stage swivels when the car is in motion; it does work. The success of this production is in the relevance of the various director Paul Burgess when his school-friend Charlotte Wilson was murdered by paramilitaries alongside her fiancé and 19 others when their bus was ambushed en route to Bujumbura (see http://www.cwmf.org. uk for more information). Charlotte’s brother Richard, whose book Titanic Express explores

the issues surrounding the killings, is a key advisor on the project, along with several Burundian refugees and experts on the region. A Place at the Table is not about that specific tragedy but is rather an attempt to understand its context. Not only is he directing his new play Shalom Baby at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, he is also squeezing in designing the set and composing the music. In between chatting with the actors and spray painting the floor he manages to give me a little of his precious time to talk about his new play and the ongoing mill of creativity that is his life. Articulate, passionate and incredibly humble, he was an absolute pleasure to interview and his play Shalom Baby certainly sounds every bit as dynamic and fascinating as the man himself. What’s your new play Shalom Baby about? It’s a play set in two time zones following two identical Jewish families. The family in the late 30s are already in the grip of Nazism in Berlin. For their Shabbat dinner as they’re not allowed to deal with Arians they hire a black guy as a Shabbes Goy, someone to perform all the tasks they’re not allowed to do on their Shabbat, and he and the daughter fall in love. So it’s about that love affair and how the family respond to them whilst the holocaust is growing around them. Meanwhile in modern

day Brooklyn, another family which is basically the original family reincarnated, are having issues with the eldest son who is a crack addict, and the they decide to have a Shabbat dinner to bring the family back together again and it’s all about the repercussions of what happens next. Is the Shabbes Goy character German? Yes, there were lots of mixed race Germans from the First World War; soldiers who stayed, married German women and had kids. In fact one of Hitler’s methods of ethnic cleansing was to round up the mixed race children, about 50 000 of them who he called the ‘Rhineland Bastards’ and have them all sterilised. But that didn’t happen to every black person in

Germany. There were definitely black Germans, relatively rare, but still in the tens of thousands. Digging into it as a play, every now and then I’d be assailed by the enormity of what it was I was looking at. I really wanted people to see that the Nazis are not just this anomaly; the Nazis learned all their ideas about concentration camps from us. They studied America for how to institute effective laws of segregation, we are not blameless in the rise of the holocaust, we were teachers and enablers. Why did you choose to set the modern day family in America? A couple of reasons, one is that the race relationships in America between black and Jewish people are

much more complex and intense than they are here. Also, I thought it would be nice to show that a black British writer can write about something other than growing up in Lewisham or Hackney. I wanted to show that we can have epic visions or at least international visions from our perspective. This play seems very different to a lot of your work. Are you trying to break into a new area as a playwright? Well you do with everything; I don’t really like to write about anything unless I have trouble understanding it. For example I’ve never taken drugs so I love to write about drug addicts. I don’t think of myself as a bigoted person so I’m fascinated by people’s

Your film FIT about bullying and homophobia has been distributed throughout every school in the UK. That’s an amazing achievement. It is amazing, it’s saying ‘Accept that other people are different from you.’ Putting it into a context, FIT isn’t just about sexuality, some people are bullied because of their perceived sexuality, they may not be

gay but they read too much or they’re a girl who likes football. I really wanted to put it in a wider context and have the audience look at the way we separate ourselves from each other. And then see how useless and impractical that is as a way of life and how homophobia is impractical. Are there any gay characters in this play? There are, I didn’t think there was going to be at first. I cast first then I write the script, so the actors and I have these rambling conversations while I sample their DNA and create characters that will challenge them. We talked a lot about the range of people who were in the holocaust; gypsies, Jehovah’s witnesses, communists, mentally ill people, disabled people, homosexuals and blacks of course. So it seemed an appropriate theme to put it in there. I thought it would be a really great opportunity to see how differently people do or don’t feel about themselves with seventy years difference, so sexuality does come into the play in very subtle and blatant ways.

You’re a very busy man. Do you ever sleep? Not busy enough, I like being awake! And when I’m awake I like to make art, and I’m very lucky that people will let me and get involved and encourage me.

Are you unafraid of yourself? I am, yeah. I have my moments, where I think ‘Why am I not...’ and you list people, but I really don’t want to be anyone else. I now look at my own work and say ‘I want to do what they’re doing only better.’ And that’s been a fantastic place to get to. E AS T F O RD STR AT OmEDy

What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps? Walk the other way! [Laughs] For someone who wants to create art and make a life out of that, everything that people say is wrong with you is your way forward. bigotry. To try and connect with that and lose judgement and foster understanding for me is crucial. Research for this play has been the most research I’ve ever had to do for anything. It has been a stretch; to me it seems a continuation of the stuff I’ve done, like Bashment which was about people who I felt had bigoted ideas and trying to understand it better. Also I did a movie called FIT which is about bullying, exploring why people bully, and so in this play we can see that the Nazis were just epic scale bullies.

Walking in my winter heels I entered Soho Theatre more than aware that tonight’s attention will be drawn to the feet. Knowing Angie Le Mar’s customary style, which leans on the glamorous side, built an unavoidable preconception of what we were about to experience. Le Mar ignited the show co devised and directed by Femi Elufowoju Jr, with Falushilah Falashilay the boisterous US soul singer who brought life to the dark stage. Surrounded by party girl shoes and her brazen comedic attitude, ironically intensifies during her time alone before fading out with song towards five other multifaceted characters. A quick change of clothes and a tilt of a wig and Le Mar’s entire demeanour locks the audience’s gaze as a new character is born. With timid body language and a European exchange of dialect Rebecca Star, a wannabe model, plagued with diminutive self worth appears on stage and reveals her heart-breaking story at her local job centre. With backing music and two screens in the backdrop the tone and scene is set, but is controversially empty without Le Mar schizophrenically drawing in and out of each character. Such as Valerie Simpson, a character who initially brings an ordinary tone to the theme, who suddenly catapults the audience into her

personal seclusion through belly busting metaphors and animalistic similes that have viewers curling in their seats. Dupree McKenzie stalked by his best friend’s ghost throws you into darkness, whose soulful story is unveiled by the actions led by his feet. Samantha Hide another female character, but completely individual in her style and her muddled persona continuously fuels jokes and humour with her presence. Le Mar takes the opportunity with her final character to turn the theme on its head with Charmaine Lawrence a lifestyle guru who presents herself with no shoes at all. Lawrence is a guest on the ‘Brenda Emmanus show,’ complete with Emmanus’s real voice over which

created an element of surprise. As each step of their story is unveiled, Le Mar places the audience into the shoes of each character. Le Mar uses shoes as a crystal ball, like laces weaving through eyelets of a simple walking boot; she uses them to tie the show together. Angie Le Mar surpasses herself with an inspiring show that is diverse from what is obtainable in London theatres today. Le Mar brought a thrill of excitement to her one woman show, but be warned if you if you’re seated on the front row then fabulous shoes and pedicured toes are strongly advised. Natural Lounge and Naptural Roots magazine presents Naturally Fabulous Naturally Fabulous took place on October 8 and was a unique opportunity for naturals to share, talk, shop and have fun. Although there were two people missing from the agenda, who were going to provide some great seminars the show went on and was still thoroughly enjoyable. Angel Smith, who wanted a space to talk about her experiences in going natural, started natural Lounge in 2010, to talk about the products she used and share hair care tips and advice from a UK point of view. Now it’s more than that. The Natural Lounge has grown into one of the UK’s largest natural communities with an informative blog a thriving Facebook group and yes, they are finally on twitter. Shair is a UK and Kenyan Registered Charity that develops and manages hair academies in Africa. Each academy teaches professional hair dressing skills to European standards at no cost to the students, who leave after one year with an internationally recognised qualification and a set of professional equipment - so that they are able to become financially independent, many for the first time. Professional hairdressing is a skill that is perfectly suited to the urban environment, it is a skill for life, and is transforming life’s today, especially those who find themselves in the vast slums that are found in many of Africa’s biggest cities. The Revlon Professional East Africa Academy was the first to be set up over 8 years ago. Each year 48 students are selected from

hundreds of applicants to complete a year of full time education, which in addition to practical skills training also includes placements in professional local salons. There are some outstanding success stories of individual triumph in the face of adversity, with many graduates for the first time in their lives being in the position to support themselves, their families, and able to make a real difference to the communities where they live. However the work of Shair is just beginning there are plans for a further 10 academies are in development. It is hoped that within 5 to 7 years Shair will be able to manage and support up to 10 academies, so that up to 500 underprivileged people per year can be taken out of poverty with a skill that is always going to be in demand. Neo soul singer Jilly from Philly will be performing at Brixton Academy later this month so we thought this was the perfect opportunity to give you part two of our interview

polite person I’ve ever interviewed. Hands down. The woman who I’ve always imagined to be ‘one of the girls’ was exactly that with her bubbly persona and open conversation style winning me over almost instantly. In the second part of our interview, Miss Scott discusses matters of the heart and her acting career. Do you think So in Love is a good wedding track from your latest album The Light of the Sun? Absolutely. Once the wedding is over and the wedding begins I think that’s going to get people up and shaking their butt – celebrating life and love. So, how do you personally deal with heartbreak – is it by reaching out to a higher being? That’s a part of it but mostly I lay down, I got on the floor and cried, really hard, often. I always say lay down because it’s the closest to the ground you can get to help you get grounded again instead of pretending like it doesn’t hurt and that everything’s okay when it’s not. I had moments of sporadic crying just out of nowhere but I think time helps, prayer helps, and asking for forgiveness even if you haven’t done anything wrong. Whatever I did to you, whatever you feel that hurt you, bothered or 24 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

troubled you, I apologise for that. You know, just taking whatever accountability you can for your own actions whatever they may be even if you don’t think you’ve done anything. I think it just washes some of the ache off and then exercise. Get up, do something and try to focus on something else as hard as you can and then date. So you didn’t spend more time with friends and family? That too but it was hard for me to be around my friends and family because they can look at me and know and that would upset me because they’d say ‘are you ok?’ and then I’d be like [pretends to wail] I’m not ok. So I kind of stayed away. I called but I didn’t want them to see the hurt in my eyes. What about in your personal life – are there any unfulfilled goals? I would like a happy, healthy relationship. I’d like to get married again; I’d like another child. I’d like to lose 20 more pounds. I don’t know if I need to but I’ve got big boobs [touches breast to emphasise point] and they’re not going anywhere. So I’ll get to a place where my face starts to look gaunt and then I’m like that’s enough. Or I just look like boobs walking in the door – Tits McGee and I don’t want that either.

Now on to your acting career, what was it like working with the late Anthony Minghella on the No.1 Ladies Detective? It’s hard. You know every time somebody mentions him it’s hard. Anthony was the sweetest, most life loving, wife loving, children loving, art loving, fun, sweet person I’ve ever met. And then on top of all that he was absolutely brilliant. And he challenged me and he focused me and he gave me a great opportunity and I miss him so much. I miss him. What’s your next acting project – anymore Tyler Perry projects? I’m looking for something else. I’ve been getting a lot of scripts but I’m looking for something else. What kind of scripts would you like to get stuck into? Whatever is nonconformist. I don’t want to be put into any boxes or any of that bullsh*t. I can do a lot of things and I love accents – French, English, whatever. I just don’t want to live within any sort of boxes. There’s no fun in acting if you don’t grow. I need to grow and I want to be challenged by a director.

I would like a happy, healthy relationship. I’d like to get married again; I’d like another child With your upcoming tour, where’s the best place you’ve performed? There are so many great places that have just blown my mind, over and over again. London is one of those places. I loved performing at Shepherd’s Bush, Paris, they’re always so animated and excited. Holland, at a 2/34am show on a Tuesday night. It’s fantastic because you get to see the intensity of the fans – it’s like I came at 4am in the morning and I’m going to work after this. I am with you. Me is like placing a small hand grenade next to an elderly man with a dodgy heart, who is sleeping after a heavy meal of pureed delicacies at the communal home he resides in. Bang would be the last thing he hears. Stooshe is Courtney Rumbold, Karis Anderson and Alex Buggs who collide with their different musical inspirations of hard rap, soulful r&b, Motown and funk to create something that actually works. Whilst they run with the motto “no rules” I was lucky enough to survive the infectiously fun trio. Betty Woz Gone as their next release again fuses their different inspirations to create something that is deliciously radio friendly, 26 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

fun and drops a little respect to The Fresh Prince of Bel Air while still talking about a serious issue in many respects. Welcome to the stage Stooshe! How did Stooshe form? Karis: Our manager was basically looking for girls to work with. Our manager [Jo Perry] did not have a vision but she was looking for girls that could sing and had a passion for music. She came across us all at different times and just asked if we could sing and we were like “yes”? So we were working individually at the studio but our paths would cross at this studio in Gravesend and we started to talk and we got on really well. We said we work well together love the same songs so why don’t we just do this? What do you all bring individually to Stooshe?

We like it to be just spontaneous and we have one rule and that there are no rules. Alex: In terms of songs, Karis is really soulful and hits out these notes, Courtney would be dropping a funk vibe and I would be doing an r&b thing. It did not really work individually but together it worked having those three different dimensions we complimented each other. And what were your individual journeys and inspirations into music? Karis: Well I attended the Brit School where I did dance but it got to a point where it was not a challenge for me and also I did not have the right

body for it and so I took my hand at singing. I just did a show one day and from that I just started taking singing lessons from a teacher who taught Jessie J and Adele and so I am privileged to have had that experience. Alex: I never thought I would be a singer because I knew I wanted to go university and go into marketing and PR. My mum is a singer so it kind of scared me to want to be a singer. I did not want to be compared to her because she is so talented. In my second of year of university Jo Perry found me. My dad was like just go for it and so I did.

Courtney: I am the baby of the group I went to theatre school from the age of 6. I literally went from school, did a bit of work in Marks and Spencer’s and then I got spotted and so it was quick. In terms of inspirations I love Emeli Sandé she is a great songwriter she is just sick and she is going to be around for a long time. So you came out on F*ck Me so why did you do that and was it difficult? Courtney: I feel comfortable in myself and with the girls and so everyone else knew and the song is obviously talking about certain things and I just thought I might as well be me do what I am doing and so I did it. I like women but I would never rule out a guy so let’s get that straight. So how involved are you ladies in creating your music?

Karis: We co-write everything with our manager Jo and Future Cut has produced the whole album. Alex: Sometimes Jo has her own ideas and we have a chorus and then we will go in the booth and sing whatever. Courtney: We like it to be just spontaneous and we have one rule and that there is no rule whether that is in our lyrics, harmonies, performance everything really. And your next release is Betty Woz Gon. Alex: We did our first radio interview with Betty Woz Gone in the 1Xtra building and that was just so exciting and we are getting lots of love from people for that track. We put out a lyric video and it got over one hundred thousand views in one day. And you ladies will obviously be

really busy. Karis: Betty will be released on November 28th hopefully then we will be starting a school tour early January and the album will be out next year the working title is Swings and Roundabouts.

What was the thinking behind the name? Karis: We chose that title because it is about the fact that and you cannot box Stooshe. Alex: People have tried to say that we are like a novelty act but the tracks that we have cover a lot of different genres. Courtney: The album covers funk to reggae to urban and some pop. Hopefully everyone will be able to get something from our album when it comes out next year. The Cadbury Heiress who gave away her fortune, is the story of a rich entrepreneur’s daughter who turned her back on her privileged life-style. It will be available at the end of the year. Why did you decide to write about Beatrice Cadbury? I came across Beatrice by chance after chatting to a Dutch client who mentioned that he used to teach at the experimental ‘Werkplaats’ School in the Netherlands. A Google search told me that the school, founded in Bilthoven in the 1920s, was the idealistic venture of an impoverished married couple, a Kees Boeke and his English wife Betty Boeke (nee Cadbury). At that point I wondered if Betty was related to the famous Cadbury family of Birmingham. With the help of my local librarian I established that Betty Boeke was in fact the youngest daughter of Richard Cadbury, who with his brother George had created the chocolate

empire at Bournville. Some of the facts didn’t square with my preconceptions of how a rich heiress would be living in the 1920s. Why was Beatrice, her husband and their eight young children living a handto-mouth existence in a Dutch town, rather than enjoying a privileged lifestyle within the bosom of the Cadbury family in Birmingham? Had a family feud cut Beatrice out of her father’s will? The truth, I eventually discovered, was even more amazing than I had anticipated. Beatrice was poor by her own volition: she had chosen to give all her Cadbury shares ‘back’ to the Cadbury workers. She could no longer reconcile her vast personal wealth with all the poverty and inequality she saw around her. It was a bold and completely unique way of addressing what she saw as the evils of capitalism. When will the book be out? I am publishing the book under my own imprint, Foxwell Press. It’ll be available as a Kindle

Lime book review: You Are Not Alone Michael: Through a Brother’s Eyes by Jermaine Jackson | Lime rating: | Words: Tricia Wombell Like that quote ‘It is too soon to say’, regularly attributed to the impact of the French Revolution, it feels too soon for a definitive study of Michael Jackson. What this book, by elder brother Jermaine, does is to draw a line on what the family wants to say. The thing is that most of us grew up with Michael, and while we adored him for so long, there were many years when we desperately wanted to avert our eyes. The early years in Gary, Indiana, joining Motown, followed by a roll call of stars, such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, is fascinating and well described in this ghost written tome. I had not known that Michael was a deeply committed Jehovah’s Witness. 30 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

Surprised though that things you want to understand from the Jackson family perspective are skated over. Michael’s striking change of features and skin colour is barely discussed, certainly not analysed in any meaningful way. The business of befriending a monkey is presented as ‘everyday.’ This attitude makes sense, when you later learn that Jermaine had a pet Bengali Tiger he would take on tour. This is a book for the fan, one that believes that Michael could do no wrong. elcome to family matters Limes guide to fostering and adoption in association with BAAF. Here you will find key and essential information to help illuminate your road to parenthood. We here at lime think that now is a really important time for black people to think about adoption. You’ve probably heard that there are lot of black children in care system that are waiting around for adoptive families. You may have also heard that the government doesn’t think that black

children should be delayed and if there are no black families available then race should not be a consideration.

Many of these children are of school age and over half of them are in groups of brothers and sisters who need to be placed together. There are disabled children and children whose future development is unclear. Some children will have been abused and/or neglected and all will have experienced moves and uncertainty and their resulting behaviour may be challenging. LIME MAGAZINE 2011

Who can adopt? Y

ou have to be over 21, happy to make space in your life and home for a child, patient, flexible and energetic, and determined to make a real difference to a child’s life, for a lifetime.

Some people think about adoption but never look into it further - possibly because they are over 40 and think they’ll be ruled out. But they are wrong, there is no upper age limit. Agencies are looking for adopters who have the physical and mental energy to care for demanding children, and whose lifestyle suggests they will still have that energy when the child is a teenager, or young adult. Older children are among

those children who wait the longest so adoption agencies are keen to hear from people who can give a permanent and loving home to an older child.

A record of offences will need to be carefully looked into but, apart from some offences against children, will not necessarily rule someone out. Everyone has to have a medical examination and health issues will need to be explored. People from all ethnic origins and religions can adopt. Ideally, a new family should meet all a child’s emotional, identity, health and development needs.

In BAAF’s view, practice experience indicates that children do best when brought up in a family that reflects their ethnic and racial identity as closely as possible. In part, this is informed by reports from black and minority ethnic adopted adults who grew up with families who did not

match their ethnic and racial identity, describing difficulties in belonging to any community outside of their immediate family. What this means in practice is that vigorous efforts are made to find a family that reflects the child’s individual identity. Given the profile of prospective adopters, this is not always achievable. In these instances, social workers will have to make a decision about when to consider alternative families in order to minimise delay for the child. Children would then be placed with families that best match most of their needs, even if this means they are of a different ethnic group. Disabled people are not excluded and sometimes experience of disability will be positively welcomed. A single person, or one partner in an unmarried couple – heterosexual, lesbian or gay – can adopt. Since 30 December 2005 unmarried couples in England and Wales can apply to adopt jointly.

f you’ve ever thought about adoption then now is a good time to think some more. With this years national adoption week running form the 31st of October to the 6th of November adoption is very much at the forefront. Every year the British Agency for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) highlight the need for more adopters during adoption week. This year’s slogan is ‘Every child deserves a family’. True! As you have probably heard in the media, black and mixed race children wait longer than their white peers to be adopted. Getting children adopted as soon as possible is very important so they can just get on with their lives with their new families. The more people that come forward the less time the children will have to wait. Many people rule themselves out, believing they can’t adopt because maybe they are too old or too young or aren’t married, but adopters like all parents are all sorts of people. The most important things are that you have the patience, energy and determination to transform a child’s life. Adopting a child is a wonderful thing to do. As Nelson Mandela said “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than in which it treats its children.” As an adopter you may be a first time parent or you may like to add to your existing family. Perhaps

circumstances sometimes, means-tested financial assistance is given to families caring for a child with particular needs, or to help make it possible for siblings to stay together.

Of course adopting is a big decision and not one to be taken lightly, it’s life changing! The process to adopt will help you to feel ready and prepared to make the commitment. Once you have adopted you will have full parental responsibility for that child and the decisions will all be yours. However we know it won’t always be easy and we will be there to support you all the way. We can offer advice, information and counselling. Raising children is

With a controversial storyline regarding a suicide pact by a group of friends Ashley Walters as the detective investigates. In a refreshing bit of honesty Ashley told me: “I don’t know why I am doing press there are so many twists in the film I cannot tell you much!” Ashley however was able to tell me a bit and by the time this interview comes out there should have been a few people that would have been lucky enough to attend the preview: how many twists did you count? 36 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

So formulaic question, what is this film about? It is about a group of people who all make a pact for their individual reasons to commit suicide but through the film they eventually find reasons to live but by that point there is someone after them anyway. It is hard to say much without giving away much of the plot.

That’s a rather controversial subject. I am not a politician I am an actor. My role is to act a role and so I did not worry about things like that. At the end of the day it is a movie and you cannot blame movies all the time for the government maybe not running the country well. Movies have so many different themes be that love, thrillers and so forth so let’s enjoy film and

enjoy the fact that we have British movies written, produced and directed by British people. What attracted you to the film? First and foremost the script attracted me to the film and the cast were people that I kind of grew up with or watched on TV myself. Obviously Idris Elba working on the film as well but we have never

Working with Jason Maza who produced the film as well he is a really good friend of mine and I doubt there are many people that know film as well as him he is just great. Explain a little about the part you play? I play the policeman which is refreshing playing this detective but that’s all I can tell you (he laughs). Lady of the moment Tulisia is in there which will surprise some people. I caught some of Tulisa’s stuff and there are people probably thinking that she is not going to do well but I must admit I was overwhelmed by how well she did I will definitely vouch for her. Is the whole ‘it is difficult for black actors thing’ an old barrier? The bottom line there are parts out there some of them will be the ones where they want a gangster a drug dealer or whatever but there are other parts and there is nothing stopping people from creating their own roles. The last feature I did I had to go to Malta where I played a guy called Abdul Farim in one episode of Sinbad. The role was for a white male aged 35 so it can be done.

Is the UK scene really good then? I think without a shadow of a doubt that t is a better scene we have started to develop our kind of scene and a lot of us are writing together, producing together and just in general knocking around ideas. It is great as well because now with the young up and coming black actors, there are more roles for them so the scene really is

His movies make money, lots of it in fact, but are they any good? The ‘Rush Hour’ franchise has gone from strength to strength, yet Jackie Chan enthusiasts (me included) lament the

sight of the great man performing poor dance routines whilst giving Chris Tucker the upper hand in their physical confrontations.

This time, the once great Eddie Murphy experiences the opposite phenomenon. We get to see the comedian do some of his best stuff for years, reminding us of how good he can be on the screen when he needs to be. The problem, then, is that Murphy is only part of an uneven ensemble in a

Machine Gun Preacher | Lime rating: Release date: 2nd November Starring: Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon Sam Childers (Gerard Butler) is a biker, drugtaker, criminal and racist at the start of this movie. He miraculously finds God and begins a long road to redemption. Once things seem to have settled at home he sets his sights on the children of Sudan, some of whom have been turned into soldiers on the frontline. Butler does a very good job throughout the film. He doesn’t hold back in the early moments and we are left in no doubt that Childers is a reprobate of the lowest kind. His redemption might be a little too convenient, but is kept grounded by Monaghan and Shannon

as wife and best friend respectively. Once the action moves to Sudan we get a different approach from filmmaker Marc Forster, but it’s one that works for this movie. One of his previous films, ‘The Kite Runner’, was a mess due to a parody of a true story, which lurched from one unlikely sequence to

Earlier in the year ‘Animal Kingdom’ won plaudits for its brutal portrayal of Aussie criminal life and those effected by it. Now ‘Snowtown’ picks up the baton, with something even more grim, especially so when you consider the fact that it’s based on a true story. Using a largely untrained cast, Justin Kurzel focuses his film on Jamie (Lucas Pittaway) a 16-year-old boy who finds himself drawn to the protective nature of John Bunting (Daniel Henshall), a stranger who has moved in with his mother. The abuse Jamie suffers comes from all sides is truly horrendous, but so are his subsequent actions. It’s a tough film to watch, but stick with it and you’ll get ample reward. As a study of what drives these men to such extreme lengths, ‘Snowtown’ does a great job of not making excuses, rather it lets you into this depressing world and keeps you there even when you want to leave.

Here is what they have to say about the film, along with the thoughts of filmmaker Tate Taylor. Emma Stone: [My character] Skeeter is learning about the truth and the reality of the every day life of these women and I was too. I felt like we were learning in tandem about that because I had been educated on the most well known stories of the civil rights era but not the day-to-day life of the ordinary woman, so 40 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

getting to live in the South and getting to place here was so enriching for my life, not just as an actor, but as Emma.

Viola Davis: The only consideration [for me] at the end of the day was a lot of hesitancy

playing a maid in 2011. I remember playing a maid in ‘Far From Heaven’ and I remember telling some friends, and I’m glad they

SCREEN haven’t held me to this, I said “I am never playing a maid again, ever.” But then Aibileen came along. I remember getting these roles in television and they were always described in the same way ‘late 30s to mid-40s, strong and sassy…’ or I remember the last one I got and I looked at it, and I looked at it all night because it said ‘police officer, mother of two, married, strong with no vulnerability whatsoever.’ So when Aibileen came along and I saw how multifaceted and rich she was, for me it was a nobrainer. Both Octavia and Tate hail from the South, so their familiarity with the landscape played into the film-making process. The story is set in Mississippi in the 1960’s, and the film was also shot there. Have things changed in recent years, and was there ever any thought

of filming the movie elsewhere? Octavia Spencer: I’m from the South but I venture to say that the amount of racism which is prevalent at this point in America would be on par with what is prevalent throughout the world. For Mississippi, as well as all Southern regions, it is definitely something which is part of our past, it is not something that I think didn’t play a part in making us grow as a nation, certainly as people, but it definitely helped being there to bring the story to life, for me anyway. Tate Taylor: I had to shoot it there. It’s a character, its beautiful, its complex and I wanted every frame of the film to be packed with Mississippi. All of the homes, all the buildings, those are practical, real locations which were there except for two sets which we had to build for practical reasons, and then the love of the community. It had to be filmed there; it would have been a different film if it had been filmed anywhere else. The civil rights movement has been

well documented, both in film and beyond, but did the actors learn anything new? Octavia Spencer: I think it shocked me because I knew it but I didn’t really process how many Skeeters, in the form of young, white men and women were actually involved in the civil rights movement. I knew it was a struggle for African Americans and people of colour but then I realise it was a struggle for the nation, when I actually went back to do research and how many young people Skeeter actually truthfully represented. Viola Davis: There are certain things which don’t make it into the history books, its just how people felt on a day-to-day basis, when you get into a character you are walking in their shoes for 3-anda-half months and you’re feeling what they’re feeling when they go to work and when they come home. Emma Stone: What I learnt was so enlightening and horrifying and reading about the Jim Crow laws, which I had no idea

existed, and realising just how separate everything was, it was all new to me. Thank god I learnt about it. Just to appreciate how far we have come has changed my whole life now, in terms of being opinionated and open minded and being able to hear peoples’ stories in a much more open way and realise why people are the way they are – because of their history. Finally, Tate, the film has been a huge boxoffice success in the U.S. what do you hope audiences take away from the movie? Tate Taylor: Lots been said that perhaps the movie could have dealt more with the in-your-face horrors of this time period, but they were just the backdrop of a film that is about beautiful, ordinary, courageous people, who have come together and find love between each other when they’re not supposed to, which is so hard, and they find a way to better each of their lives, independently, but for one another, and with each others help. music game so when it is used I find myself being a little sceptical but safe to say that in terms of Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont he is a pioneer. Having spearheaded the massive UK Garage scene, 20 years later, Matt Jam is still as busy as ever doing it again and again! Draughtsman to DJ explain that transition if there was a transition? I worked as a draftsman for 10 years in Luton, and was DJ-ing as a hobby from the age of 14 and getting bookings for house parties, youth events and club nights.

In the early 90s recession I left my job in 1991 and decided I wanted to pursue my hopes of becoming a professional DJ. To do this I came to London and for months just went around checking out the club scene. I found a club in Islington called Paradise and begged the Happy Days promoter, Timmi RamJam for a half hour slot. I ended up playing for two hours and the rest is history, as they say. What has kept you hungry for dj’ing? My love of music for sure and after 20 years doing this job, I still get excited when I step up to the booth. I play lots of styles of house and garage so the buzz of the ever changing music scene and crowds still excites me. I am also privileged to travel around the world. DJ-ing in many different cultures is another bonus and my tour of America starting with Las Vegas and LA is my next exciting challenge. UK Garage at one time was absolutely huge is it wrong to

say that it has now gone back to its roots as a more underground genre and is that good? No you’re right, UK garage has gone back to its roots and it needed to as well. We had built up something back in the early 90s that lots of people thought would only last a year or so and blew up to become a fantastic genre in its own right. But Garage lost a lot of high profile producers around 2002 when the big pay checks dried up and other genres were getting more attention with the kids. You have been called a pioneer but who else in your mind has pioneered UK Garage and evidently UK music – three names will do? This will get me in so much trouble as picking three is just not enough, I need at least 20 but ok, I will have to pick my favourite from the 4x4 early times, so apart from

TuffJam, I would say Todd Edwards, Grant Nelson and MJ Cole. I think these three influenced the change of the sound of UKG back in the day, but there are so many people from Booker T, Wookie, Artful Dodger (Mark Hill), Sticky etc, who also shaped it, the list is endless. How is the label going and has that been hard to juggle along with your other pursuits? Solo Traxx is doing very well, having released tracks from Rosie Gaines, Lenny Hamilton Jr as well as our own productions which are doing very well on all the digital websites.
