The Big Challenge represents the difficult daily task of fetching water by women and children in Africa. The walk will take approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete and will start at The Scoop at More London, the amphitheatre situated beside City Hall and next to the iconic Tower Bridge on South Bank. Participants will endure distances that return to Sadler’s Wells with Echoa. Drums of all descriptions are cleverly organised on scaffolding so that seven distinctly different dance scenes can unfold below. Serious About StreetDance 2012 Words: Victoria Woode Lime Rating:
Hosted by renowned choreographers Kymberlee Jay and Mr Dre, the event was a must for all street dance enthusiasts. The showcase included over 200 dancers from a range of international countries including Ireland and Holland. Acts that really stood out to me were the ‘Shockarellas’ an all female dance troupe from Manchester, aged just 11-16! They really are in a league of their
own; they’ve got the swagger, precision and unique moves that could dominate the whole dance industry. ‘Parallel’ were really refreshing to watch, they weren’t afraid to mix it up with different sounds and managed to get things started to a slow jam! My favourite group of the whole night were ‘Soldiers of the New School’ (Boy Blue entertainment) – a humungous dance troupe who absolutely held their own and lived up to their name. I had never seen so much popping, krumping, and locking under one roof. The amount of talent under one was immense! ‘SAS’ was closed by a

celebration of Sierra Leone Women’s Society. An organisation that started in the late 1950’s, after an invitation from the then Sierra Leone High Commissioners wife the Late Olivette Kelfa-Caulker who resided in the UK. A handful of women responded to the invitation and began getting together to hold informal discussions and partake in social activities. This attracted women who had come to London to study or where here on holiday. Following the country’s independence celebrations in 1961, the Commissioner; Dr Kelfa-Caulker and his wife were relocated to the United States of America for his new position as ambassador. Dr William Fitzjohn took office in his place as High and his wife Mrs Fitzjohn accompanied him. She took over the group and continued with the meetings with the women. In 1962 it was formally named as the Sierra Leone Women’s Society (SLWS) and it became officially functional. The society is a voluntary, social and non political organisation. It is headed by a president and supported by elected officers. Membership is open to women from Sierra Leone or those who have a husband/partner from Sierra Leone. The monthly meetings are held

one of the most anticipated events in the Caribbean calendar. This year’s event will be held between 30th April and 13th May 2012 and will be headlined by none other than the celebrated performer and multiple Grammy awardwinner; Lionel Richie. The island is responsible for one of the world’s top five jazz festivals. In the country known as the perfect getaway and ranked in the top 10 ‘Best islands of the world’ category at this year’s Condé Nast Traveller Awards, its set to host musical stars from all over the globe. Artists confirmed to grace the main stage include musical heavy weights such as accomplished South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela; 5 times Grammy winning artist Ziggy Marley – the son of iconic reggae legend Bob Marley; jazz aficionado Joshua Redman; internationally acclaimed The Gypsy Kings; hit R&B song writer turned performer and soulful songstress Keri Hilson; and pop and hiphop phenomenon Melanie Fiona among others. In total the 2012 event will feature over fifty artists performing against some of the most beautiful and idyllic backdrops in the world. From the signature Atlantic Ocean backdrop of the Pigeon Island National landmark, to quaint and rustic village settings like Fond D’Or in Dennery, Rudy John Beach Park in Laborie and
Seaside jazz at Duty free Pointe Seraphine in the heart of the City. During the month of May, the festival will encompass 14 days of live performances from renowned local, regional and international superstars. As well as Lionel Richie, a slew of Saint Lucia’s leading musical masterminds like Luther Francois, Ronald ‘Boo’ Hinkson, Richard Payne, Derek Yarde Project and others complement the exciting line-up. The event brings together international as well as local musicians and features not only jazz music but also R&B and Calypso. Tourism Director Louis Lewis spoke about the thought that has gone into the 21 year history of the event. “The longevity of Saint Lucia Jazz is testament to constant innovation and determination which is warranted to ensure that as a product, Saint Lucia Jazz remains fresh and exciting, so as to sustain public appeal and visitor attraction . . . . 2012 innovations include a reduced yet more robust jazz centric line up reflecting pure, smooth, Caribbean and Creole jazz with touches of R&B and world musical genres, and a more cohesive grouping of supporting communitybased jazz events, which continue to define Saint Lucia Jazz.”

intelligence and tenacity. These are just a few adjectives I would use to describe this talented artist. Born in the Cameroon, West Africa, Achu came to the UK at the age of nine. An inquisitive and creative child, Achu used found materials to start making art. Gaining A grades at both GCSE and A level art, Achu decided not to follow the path of art education that her mother wanted for her and went on to study and qualify in architecture. Achu worked in the field of architecture until the economy collapsed in 2008 when she was made redundant. Achu’s first exhibition entitled the “30th Act,” took place in April of 2009, coinciding with her 30th birthday. Achu’s career has been on the ascent ever since. Are you doing art full time? Yes, but I also have private architecture work. I have private architecture contacts that I am working on in Ghana and Cameroon. Excellent! Are you planning on pursuing the two career paths simultaneously? Yes. I aim never to sleep! The thing is; I have always wanted to be both an artist and an architect. Right now, the ratio is roughly 70 per cent art and 30 per cent architecture. Does the concept of money and sales come into your definition of what it means to be a 10 LIME MAGAZINE 2012
successful artist? Not necessarily. For me, it is more about people recognising my work. For example, a friend of mine who lives in Australia has recently become my representative over there. Once she told me that she mentioned my work to somebody and they knew who I was. I was in shock! I did not realise my work had affected people as far afield as Australia. That was really cool. I think it is about people seeing that what I am doing is important. I am all about making a difference somehow with beautiful buildings or through the art, educating people about Africa in my own way. One
of the reasons why I paint what I paint is because I want to bring African culture to the Western world and educate about our culture. I like the fact that people can, having seen a visual, know a little bit about African culture. That is more success than just having money. But money is important, which is one of the reasons why I introduced prints of my work. With prints, your work can be taken worldwide very easily. Are you concerned with gaining recognition from and being accepted by the art establishment or are you more concerned
with creating your own market? It would be easier if the people within the establishment were open to help. Saying that, I am not afraid of creating my own market and I am working very hard to make it succeed. Going back to your definition of what it means to be successful in art, do you consider yourself to be successful? Not yet. I was asked this question in another interview recently. That question came up, but the interviewer put it in a different way. She said, “When was your big
Shiri- Maasai tone
break?” My response was, “I have not had a big break yet!” I am getting there because I am lucky enough to have had exhibitions in places where people buy my work, but I don’t think I am there yet. I am not happy with where I am at the moment. Looking at “successful” black female artists who have been validated by the establishment, think Wangechi Mutu, Rene Cox and Sonia Boyce, what in your opinion does it take for a black female artist to be accepted and validated as successful within the art establishment? I know that Wangechi Mutu’s work has a good message. It is a little bit controversial, it is unique and because of her style, you do not automatically assign it to the African market. I think those things may contribute to her success. Her message is unique, it is a little bit different and I have not personally experienced that kind of thing, not until I saw her work. Yes, I think that the element of controversy seems to be important. It seems to be a common thread. For female artists specifically- not just black female artists, if you think of Tracey Emin, as soon as she made My Bed, all of a sudden, she was news worthy and that is in
What would you say is your ultimate dream for your art? I would love to have a major retrospective showing my growth over the years. Not right away because I don’t think I am ready. Maybe in about ten years. I would like people to know me! From all the musicians, you know, so that they have a piece of Shiri Achu art in their house! Is it fame?... I don’t want to walk down the street and be recognised so maybe not. When I paint, as much as it is to educate, it is for the people here who have never been to Africa to think that after seeing my work, they would love to go and see Africa. I also want them to see Africa in a different light. I would like to make a small impact like that. You mentioned musicians; it only takes for one major celebrity to endorse your work for their friends and everybody else to take notice and asking them, “Oh darling, where did you get that fabulous piece?” Well Faith Evans bought one of my paintings and nothing really came out of that. Yes, I did hear about that. But Faith Evans is not as familiar now as she was maybe ten years ago. She does not have the same relevance to the general public. Maybe if you got someone like David Beckham to buy a piece? I would not be impressed by David Beckham buying a piece for the sake of it. I would rather he bought it because he appreciates it rather than just because he thought to himself, “Shiri Achu work is supposed to be cool, I have got some money, let me just buy one.” I want people who are going to appreciate my work to own my work. This is part of the issue that a lot of artists face.
Once your work has a real market value, people start buying your work as an investment rather than because they love it. Next thing you know, the person that bought your work saying that they would cherish it forever goes and puts it up for auction! I have friends who have my work whom I have specifically told not to ever sell it. If they ever did, I would be really upset! It is meant to be for the person who bought it, it is meant to have value for them, so why would they then turn around and use it as some sort of money tool? I don’t like that. I was reading something today about an artist who discovered for the first time that one of his paintings had been put up for auction. He said he felt hurt by it even though it is in a lot of ways a marker of success for many artists. It is a way of knowing that you are getting there isn’t it. It is a great signal to show when you are actually there. Or getting there. Exactly. Because that is a very tangible demonstration that a market for your work exists. Imagine a young female comes to you and says that she wants to follow your path, in your footsteps and pursue her ultimate dream which is basically the same as yours. What advice would you give to her? Whatever it is, make that work recognisable. Create a niche for yourself. You must have a passion for it. If you do not have the passion, you cannot do anything. I can stay up all night working because I love everything that I am doing. I work very hard at it, because I don’t feel that it is work. If you are going to be a painter, I think you should find what you love to paint and paint. You have to find marketable tools. It took me a long time before I started selling prints because I was intent on just selling the originals
even though my friends had encouraged me to sell prints. I had an exhibition and a few small paintings were sold. I had a guest book out and people were writing their comments. I had so many comments stating that they really liked particular pieces but just could not afford them. I then decided to make the prints! I started off printing onto canvas and people were still not able to afford them so I then went to fine art prints on paper. It has been a learning curve but now I make signed limited prints on paper and they still hold a certain value because they are limited edition. I learned my market. You have to know your market and understand what sells. Also, As much as people invite me to exhibit at amazing places like the Commonwealth Secretariat or the Houses of Parliament, I really put myself out there. For Black History month, I called around asking what was going on because I wanted to exhibit somewhere. That is how I came to exhibit at Black History Live in Wembley Stadium. I paid £200 of my own money to have an exhibition stand. I sold a few, but it was not about the sales. The contacts that I made were worth so much more. That is how I met the lady who invited me to exhibit at the Commonwealth Secretariat and I was paid double what I had paid to do the Wembley exhibit. Go out and look for the opportunities and enjoy it while never letting it go to your head! It is so much better to remain yourself rather than thinking that you are better than anybody. If you are about educating and showing people Africa and you are reaching that goal, then you should just be happy for it because you are doing what you set out to do.

Umami Restaurant Review Lime Rating: Words: Vernia Mengot On arrival I was certain that the urban decor and modern furnishings would live up to its sensuous mood and fantastic food. Seated at a booth which boasted a vibrant view of the newly opened restaurant; and a bowl of prawn crackers that tasted far from the ones at my local take-away; my guest and I were handed a wooden cased menu, where we ordered Shiraz viognier to drink. Along with a high recommendation of Tempura Lychee; stuffed lychee with minced prawn and chicken in light batter, Thai pan dan chicken along with an Indonesian Gado Gado salad; a fusion of crunchy vegetables and tofu topped with sweet tamarind sauce. Already the colourful appetisers with warm, sweet flavours left us wanting more. For the main course my guest opted for steamed white rice, Thai green curry; that included baby corn, avocado and Are we friends? Open to groups of 8 – 12, participants will be treated to one of Marcus’ incomparable lunches. Menus will change according to the season but might comprise a starter of
chicken along with Gang Ga-ri Goong; a Thai yellow curry. The portions were great for one, and the option to go large and share was an added bonus. I tasted the Malaysian Siakap Garing; a sea bass dish which was crispy and sweet. I also tried the Mee Goreng noodles known as traditional street food. Dessert being a must; an assortment of ice-cream on the menu caught my eye, and we delved into chilli chocolate ice-cream and stem ginger. We concluded the night with a beautifully fragrant jasmine silver needles and midsummer mango tea. Situated in South Kensington, Umami serves delicious Pan-Asian cooking that pays homage to traditional dishes from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. The service was great, and the staff where friendly, experienced and certainly well versed in the elements of the menu. On its way to proving popular to London’s residents; It’s a great setting for a group of friends meeting for tasteful cuisine.

Top tips for eating out ...and maintaining a healthy weight
• Don’t starve yourself throughout the day, going to a restaurant when you are really hungry will only encourage your appetite for those calorie laden dishes. • Avoid fried dishes and speak up to your waiter. Ask for your food to be steamed, baked, grilled or poached. • Be careful of those sauces! There isn’t a point in ordering the poached fish or baked chicken if it is drowning in a creamy rich sauce. Try to order tomatobased sauces if you need to at all • Don’t feel compelled to order a 3 course meal, but if you do, try to choose light options like fruit or sorbet and order extra vegetables with your main
course to fill up on • If you are going for a starter, try the soup. Make sure to avoid creamy soups and go for broth-based soups made of vegetables as they contain mostly water which is a great way to fill up without the extra calories. • Substitute potatoes and french fries for a salad where possible but watch out for the dressings. Creamy dressings are full of unwanted calories/fat so make sure to ask for it on the side so you can limit how much you use. • Don’t feel compelled to
finish the whole meal, or have that extra helping. Take it home and enjoy it for your lunch the next day. • Take your time with your meal. Eating slowly will help you to eat less as your body has a chance to start acknowledging that it is full. • Alcohol is full of calories, try a white wine spritzer (with soda). It’s a great lower calorie drink that lasts longer throughout the meal. Teacups at the ready for a jubilee knees-up at Archer Street On Monday 4th June, The West End’s newest hotspot, Archer Street will host a traditional street party in the heart of vibrant Soho to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. looks granular- like sugar. Next place the cream, butter and your rum or brandy into a small saucepan and bring them to simmering point. Turn the processor on and pour the mixture through the feeder tube and continue to blend until you have smooth, chocolaty mixture. Now add the yogurt and bled for a few seconds. Transfer the liquid mixture into a bowl and allow it to cool; cover with cling film and refrigerate overnight. Your mixture should have now thickened and you can now start to divide the mixture to make your truffles. For this you simply need to sift a dessertspoon of cocoa powder on to a flat plate, take a heaped half teaspoon of the truffle mixture to roll into your first truffle. Roll into the cocoa powder for a rough-rock look or lightly dust your hands in cocoa and roll for a smoother finish. Place each one into an individual paper case. Try not to handle the chocolate in your hands too much or they’ll start to melt! For extra special occasions add finely chopped ginger (20g) to the truffle mixture or roll your truffles in toasted flaked almonds (25g).

FASHION/BEAUTY
In this exclusive interview Lime talks to Ash Cole and Bernita Shaw about their model management agency, how they aim to bring a fresh approach to the fashion industry and their focus on representing the next generation of top models.
Ta-d Models
ell us a bit about
a.d. models is a new agency; we hope to bring a new perspective on what it means to be a model. Our models come from a wide range of backgrounds and are real representations of young people in society today. What differentiates you from other agencies? Our agency’s aim is to slowly break down the discriminatory boundaries that are synonymous with the fashion industry. Whereas it’s important for our models to have a good (AND healthy) look, we also focus on their personality as well, as ultimately, that’s what makes them more relatable. What advice do you have for youngsters wanting to get into the industry? We would advise youngsters trying to get into the industry, to be confident, be themselves and have a positive attitude. It is tough and you need a thick skin to be able to deal with criticism and being a positive person is the best way to do this. We hear about some of the bad experiences people have when first trying to make it in modelling, do you have any tips on how to avoid these? In all industries there’s going to be difficult times; it’s important for models to keep their wits about them 20 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

and to speak up when they feel uncomfortable. I like the design of your website, what was the thinking about the styling of it? Thanks! Our website design is quite simplistic; we wanted the models to be the focal point. We chose to have a gallery of all our models as opposed
to individuals ones so that it felt more blog-like, more current. What background do you have in the fashion industry? We have both worked in fashion for a long time, at smaller boutique stores as well as big chains. I (Ash) have also done visual merchandising.
All our experience has helped us to gain a better understanding of what it is that consumers are after. We think it’s really important for brands to keep their finger on the pulse and remain fresh and current rather than stick to age-old stereotypes. What do you think will be the big trends
FASHION/BEAUTY coming up this year? For summer, we’re loving the pastel colours that were shown last year and are really present on the high street at the moment. For next season we think at baroque style details will be huge! What does the future
hold for you, and the company? We’re still a young company so there’s a lot of room to develop. What’s good is that a lot of people have been receptive to what we’re doing, even at such an early stage and we just hope that a.d. continues to grow from strength things to strength.

.Traits AKA Brianna Price recently released her new single ‘Fever’ on 25th March through Digital Soundboy. The track a clear party starter features vocals by Elisabeth Troy, and she has already had her tracks supported by Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Mistajam and Zane Lowe. B.Traits has become an integral member of Digital Soundboy’s inner circle. In this interview she talks to us about her debut single, work in a male dominated scene and what we can look forward to. Congratulations on your debut single ‘fever’, the track has been deemed as a fresh sound for 2012. Tell us a bit about the single... For the single I really tried to capture a memory from when I first discovered dance music. You teamed up with Elizabeth Troy, how would you describe that whole experience?
She’s amazing, she is a legend. I have always been a big fan of her music. She has been on my list of people that I most like to work. Shy who’s my manager has known her for a while so he hooked us up with the studio sessions. She was really cool to work with and she’s so wise and gives me good advice. We literally shot the video in a day, we’ve good chemistry and we just had fun with it. So you’ve become the first lady of Digital Soundboy, how does it feel? I don’t know! I don’t know what it’s like to be a man with Digital Soundboy. I’m kind of just treated like everyone else. When did your journey with music begin for you? I probably heard UK garage or underground, when I was about 12 or 13 years old. I grew up in Melfort, British Columbia so I had to really source it out. I spent a lot of time

I don’t like to give too much away; I like to surprise people listening to Ministry of Sound compilations. There were a group of about four of us. Everyone thought we were crazy as it was bizarre to them. You have already done some work with Shy FX and Liam Bailey, what’s next? I have loads of stuff on the go. I would like to release another single by the end of the summer. But I don’t like to give too much away; I like to surprise people. I’m also working towards an album. So my life revolves around writing music. You have also recently been announced as a new Radio 1 DJ for their monthly ‘In New DJs We Trust’ slot, alongside Mosca and Julio Bashmore, how exciting...
I can’t believe that I actually got the show. I had done a pilot way back last year and they made me wait forever. I like being a radio presenter. I like to bring as much music as possible. I like to bring good vibes. What would you say is your favourite genre? I can’t say I have a favourite genre. I would say rave or carnival music. I have favourite tracks. Now is exciting times for music everyone is doing something different. What advice would you give to young things young people who are passionate about music? My advice would be to honestly be yourself, to have your own style and your own taste. The second that you start doing that, the crowd likes your vibe off that’s really important. Be true to your own style and taste.

Throughout your phenomenal music journey what has been your biggest challenge? I can’t say I had one honestly. When you do what you love, you work it humbly with passion, excitement and love. Tell us about an unforgettable memory during your singing career... One of my most unforgettable memories is performing to thousands of people at the Grand Prix in Germany. All I could see were smiling faces everywhere and it felt so good. Who is the most influential person in your life?
God is always influencing me through the wind, the sun, and people. My mentor Bishop E Bernard Jordan is also another huge influence with his teachings on life and oneness. You’ve performed all over the globe. When you’re not on the road what do you enjoy doing? When I’m not working I spend a lot of time being at and around my church, Zoe Ministries, creating and producing other projects.
If you describe yourself in one way, what would that be? Easy...
Tell us about some of the producers and DJ’s that you have worked with... I have been so lucky to work with so many great talents including George Clinton, David Guetta, Masters At Work who I wrote my anthems with such as “Beautiful People”, “I Get Lifted” and “Stay Together”. for some ten years since her first album Closer (2001) which spawned Romantic the jazzy, hip-hop driven track that is about as sensual as it gets. While Closer was the album that first made people stand up and take notice of the Bay area resident, the follow-up album, Even Closer (2002) cemented her status as an artist to watch. Work with names like the fantastic Erykah Badu, the mercurial Mos Def or indeed brilliant Dwele followed and are the tip of a proverbial Titanic sized iceberg. Despite the success (which surprisingly still has not seen her win awards) she remains a person able to keep her private life private and let her music take all the focus. That is not to say that we do not get an understanding of the more private thoughts and feelings of Goapele on the contrary through her eleven years in music we have learnt that Goapele is more than a striking beauty. “I wanted to make a statement against the war with Closer-as a RnB soul singer you can be expected to just focus on love and

The music I have done has always been completely sensual but there were also other things I wanted to say and I wanted to make sure in my career that I said those things first.” Closer was an album that managed to be a foray into deep neo soul vibes with a generous
portion of hip-hop driven beats whilst still being able to bring some social commentary-Salvation represents another sample of that quintessential mix of Goapele sensuality with a message. “I just really wanted to make sure my music was taken seriously-and in truth my mind was in a different place particularly with my first album, with Break of Dawn, it is more about feelings, emotions. On the sensual side it is about love and loss. I think that I was a little more vulnerable, emotional- I wanted to capture that.” Break of Dawn evidently does all that Goapele wanted to achieve and more. It is a totally brilliant fourth album and a whole six years since her last album, Change it All (2005). Milk and Honey a gorgeous track from the album, was initially slated as the title track but Break of Dawn as a body of work was about capturing her emotional growth and new perspective on life. “Milk and Honey was a

As the interview comes to an apt end, a question regarding what Break of Dawn is trying to convey is answered poignantly? “I lost my dad, my grandmother and a dear friend of mine in a short period of time but I am also a mother now and it was an exciting thing that I was looking to do to expand my life-so there have been some big changes- Break of Dawn was a visual reference of what I have been through and now coming out of that time in a way.” Info: Break of Dawn Web: www.goapele.com Twitter: @goapele

who brings tight rapid fire bars, complex yet catchy word play held together by a wish to say something more than lines of selfaggrandisements. Having worked with some of the names that are blowing up right nowthink Emelie Sande- Byron (his actual stage name) has built a following that has garnered him comparisons to a legend of the UK scene, Mike Skinner. His mix-tape Deep Lyrics, Dirty Beats soon to go into its third instalment is a Ronseal moment because it does exactly what it states on the tin. Firstly you have avoided a stage name/moniker why? I try to go against the grain in a lot of the things I do and not just for the sake of it. That is why I did not want some stylised namealso (and it might be a cliché) but hip-hop music is very true to me-some people have some crazy alter ego but I just want to be me. Does it seem ironic that using your real name
has made you stand out more? Definitely it is ironic and speaking of ironic the whole me being from Slough thing is interesting because when I first started out really people were “like why you doing rap you from Slough?” Now that has provided me with something different in this saturated market. A hard question but what else do you think distinguishes you in the saturated male emcee game? I believe what people are doing whether it is with similes and metaphors-it is generally talking about being cool. I come from a completely different perspective. I am not saying that I am the best emcee I am just asking people to listen to my music and then they can come to their own opinion. It must difficult in this saturated male emcee market? You were a teacher before. I used to work in private education for three and half years, I worked as a youth worker and I used to kids English and Maths after school but then my music career took off and it fell to the side. There is a third instalment of your successful mix-tape Deep Lyrics, Dirty Beats? Yes definitely and I have one track with Ghetts and Dot Rotten which I earmarked for them months ago but obviously it can be difficult to get people together and there is another track which I am going to keep secret which
is not as big feature wise but it has a lot of grime people featured on there because I wanted to show my talent in that area. And why three instalments? Initially I was going to release it as one mix-tape but I just find that people find it difficult to absorb a lot of music these days and so I just thought if I release it this way it will be easier for people. Lastly why did you choose that name for the mix-tape which is due out later this year? The mix-tape is me and whatever happens in my music career this is me-I am talking about issues that matter and apart from that, I love those beats that make you want to screw your face up (he laughs). What would be three words that you would give as advice for those wanting to break into the industry? Passion, talent and patience. SCREEN Marley Lime Rating: Release date: 20 April Starring: Bob Marley This might be along documentary, clocking in at nearly two-and-ahalf hours, but would you expect anything less? The man is a legend, and his story is utterly compelling from his troubled upbringing to meteoric rise to global superstardom.
The film goes back to Bob Marley’s roots with fantastic interviews with those who knew the man and those who were touched by his music. Even fans will be surprised by some of the revelations, and what director Kevin McDonald does so wonderfully is to give you a sense of time and place. Even when the opportunity arises to score some cheap sentimental points as the tragic death of the star approaches, that temptation is resisted in favour of excellent archive footage.
There is a constant soundtrack which showcases the origins of the music style that Marley had a hand in creating, and it helps pass the time. That’s not to say you will ever feel bored, there is just too much to get through that we would happily sit through a film of twice the length. Take your friends along, even if they know nothing about the man himself, and they will be blown away by a tragic, yet beautiful story. A fitting tribute to one of the most important figures in black culture.

Headhunters Lime Rating: Release date: 6 April Starring: Aksel Hennie, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Synnove Macody Lund Part of the ever-increasing output from Scandinavia, ‘Headhunters’ comes with a huge reputation and has already been picked up for a Hollywood remake. The thriller elements work well, but feel too mainstream in places. Perhaps the new found confidence following ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ have played into the minds of the filmmakers as the story feels a little too generic at times. The performances themselves can’t be faulted. We follow the lead character who is the Headhunter of the title, who keeps up his lavish lifestyle with a spot of art theft. He soon meets his match however, and a desperate battle of wits ensues. The action comes thick and fast, and you do root for the hapless lead even though he offers little in the way of compassion. It’s easy to sit back and start picturing who would step in for the remake, but this is one film that really doesn’t need it. It functions perfectly well in it’s own Hollywood-ised world.

Lime magazine catches up with the mentor and producer behind Ushine Ishine
Efe Ezekiel
WORDS: VERNIA MENGOT
Achildren and young imed at inspiring
people, Efe Ezekiel has created a vision, hope and positivity. Her hard work and dedication shows that her greatest hope is to “take the ‘Shine’ programme to all the young people who are suffering from low-self esteem and loss of hope and give them a new direction.” She set up the program in 2009 and her foundation for life is to “Love, Learn and Shine!!!” In this interview Efe discusses her childhood and the bright beginnings for the next generation. You were born and raised in Hackney; in a single parent home by your mother. Tell us a bit about life as a child for you. My life growing up was made beautiful by my mother; who is one of the most kindest, loving and 36 LIME MAGAZINE 2012
creative people that you could ever meet. Living in Hackney and the East End of London was tough for everyone who didn’t have much, and so was therefore trying to get by and survive on what they did have. I witnessed my mother work incredibly hard every single day and so it was therefore because of her hard work and dedication that I never went without anything.
My mother would not only look after myself, but she would also look after family members, friends and even strangers. I personally saw her give both love and time to everyone; and these are two of the most important things that one can receive in one’s life because they are concepts which don’t materialise in a majority of people’s life. They are rare concepts which most do not give and feel. Therefore
I, as well as those around me felt privileged that we were given time and love. My mother gave me a strong foundation and environment to feel confident in who I was as a person and to allow me to follow my dreams and passion to fullest whilst always smiling and maintaining a good sense of humour.
hope in their dreams; and so I knew that I could make a significant difference in their lives and thinking patterns. Therefore, from the summer of 2009, I began hatching my plan to create a bespoke, creative and unique mentoring service that truly embodied, loved and nurtured the spirit of youth and our young people.
When did you decide that you wanted to build your achievements with Ushine Ishine? I have always loved babies and children so decided to volunteer as a tutor with a charity. After six years, I knew that I not only loved teaching, but I also knew that this was something that I could truly devote my life, passion & energy too. I realised that many young people were lacking self-confidence in themselves and losing
Tell us about the main ethos of Ushine Ishine... The main ethos of Ushine Ishine for every young person is to become the greatest person that you can be in all areas of your life so that your light can shine so bright as so to inspire somebody else to also become their greatest possible self. We have to all encourage and support one another. This is important. By providing our children with the means and with opportunities in order to reach their highest goals
Not only do you mentor youth but you also try to gain an understanding of their issues and lifestyle, how do you ensure that this happens? The best way to ensure that you truly understand young people’s issues and lifestyles is to simply listen and really care about the things that they are interested in. I personally love popular culture – fashion, music, language, art…everything - and so for me it is really easy to make that connection. I believe that one of the leads to this successful connection is energy. You have to make sure that you are just as energetic and lively as the youth are - in order to keep up with them. This energy is reflected in your body language and also in the attitude that you present them. What sort of tools and services do you provide for the young people involved in your scheme? I provide a broad range of services that cater to everyone. We encourage children and young people - 5 - 25 year olds - to achieve their full potential in the most fabulous and outstanding way. Our workshops teach them to become confident, self-aware and to aspire for success in all areas of their personal & working life. We cover topics and issues from self-esteem, bullying, sexual health, personal development, recruitment, creativity, media, presentation/ oratory skills, weight-loss and much more. Results from the sessions are seen instantly and young people can really change the way they see themselves and raise their levels of energy and aspirations.
opinion about anything or ask them for any advice, then they will always tell it to me straight. So I make sure that I take their advice on board before I set off on my adventures. Your focus is to empower young people for the future. So what’s next? My aim is to build ‘Ushine Ishine’ and make sure that I am able to reach, connect and bring that shine, positivity and philosophy to as many people as I can. I am dedicated to bringing hope and opportunity to our children and young people all over the world in the most wonderful and exciting way.

and aspirations, then we, as a team, as a community and as a world can truly prosper.
What advice would you give to young things someone to achieve their ultimate goal in life? To achieve any dream you have to believe in it and also believe in your heart, mind and spirit. You have to believe that you will achieve it. The next step is to then start planning; executing your plan and then aligning yourself with those who also have high goals and aspirations so that you can learn and feed off each other. It is also important that they believe in you and support your dreams. The final step is to then get ready to succeed, fail, learn from your failure; and then succeed again! Go and get your goals and always remember to treat people well as you climb your way to the top. That’s all the advice that I can give you for now, but I pray that I will continue to have the opportunity to help all youths across the world for the rest of my days.

Ushine Ishine
You are also known as a presenter and TV producer, what sort of projects have you worked on? I got the bug for TV after seeing myself on a BBC 2 documentary at 3 years old. I knew that I wanted to work both in-front & behind the camera. I decided to get a degree in Media and then set off to first work for MTV which was my dream job! I worked in the news department as a Production Assistant intern. I then moved into Advertising working as a Freelance Producer for 11years. I worked at various top London agencies; working on brands such as Virgin, Baileys, Nike and Sky. I worked as a Freelance Producer whilst also working on pursuing my career as a TV Presenter. Presenting is both incredibly important and fun to me and I loved hosting the BBC2 programme “Blast” that was a youth information
show. Therefore, I wanted to continue my presenting through ‘Ushine Ishine’ but to bring important messages of advice, hope and inspiration from our community role models to all my mentees that want to continue receiving guidance after having attended my sessions and workshops. I can honestly say that I love it and know that doing this kind of work is really and truly worthwhile. What keeps you grounded? I feel that I am a very grounded, sociable and happy person. However, I was brought up to live for my dreams and make them as big and grand as possible. Young people inspire me to want to continue to fly to my dreams as well as also flying with them towards their own! Nothing is impossible! Sorry, My bad! Maybe, I am not so grounded at all. Lol! the Rich Mix venue in Bethnal Green on Friday 23rd March 2012. The show itself consisted of a collision between hip hop and comedy. With a phat line up of comedians, dancers DJ and hip hop karaoke, the night was perfectly set up for an evening of laughter. In no time after the 7:30pm start, the venue was soon packed with enthusiastic hip hop and comedy fans. There was a relaxed atmosphere that saw everybody socialising and talking before the show started. The night was introduced and hosted by MC Fergus Craig, who appears regularly on BAFTA nominated BBC sketch show, ‘Sorry I’ve got no head’ while Sony Award winning ex KISS FM radio show presenter Big Ted was on the “wheels of steel” all evening. There was a line up of well known and prolific acts; first in line were Robin and Partridge, the surreal sketch group. They warmed up the audience with some interpretive sketches that included beat boxing and rhyming. They labelled their performance at the end as “Experimental Irish Hip hop”. Next in line was Beardyman the human beatboxing genius followed by Mr B, Gentleman rhymer. Mr B wowed the audience with he’s rhyming in perfect Queen’s English, playing he’s banjo and encouraging the crowd to respond.
