Preheat the oven at 200 degrees. Next you will need to sift the flour into a mixing bowl, add sugar and rub in both the fats (lard and margarine) using your fingertips until the mixture looks like breadcrumbs. Add the cold water, in small quantities to form non-sticky dough. Then wrap the mixture in Clingfilm and leave in the fridge for ten minutes. After ten minutes, roll the pastry out onto a floured work surface to a medium thickness. Cut out using a pastry cutter, one large and one medium circle. Do this until you have used your pastry. Gather up the

scraps re-roll and repeat until all your pastry is used. Now it’s time to assemble your pies, place all the large circles in the bottom of a bun-tin tray and add one teaspoon of mincemeat to each and then place the medium circle on the top of each. Using a pastry brush, brush the tops with milk and then place your pies into the oven to bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove, sift icing sugar over the top and serve warm.

For the cake put the eggs and sugar into a large mixing bowl and whisk the mixture with an electric hand-mixer until it is pale and thick. Drizzle the melted butter into the whisked mixture and carefully fold it in with a tablespoon, then sieve the flour into the bowl and fold into the mixture. Now your mixture is ready to go into a lined cake tin. Scatter the apple slices evenly over the top and sprinkle all the crumble over the mixture. Bake for 50-60 minutes until the cake is firm to touch and golden brown in colour. Leave the cake to rest for ten minutes and then serve with vanilla ice cream.

Piste Bar Words: Maxine-Laurie Marshall Lime Rating:

REVIEW

Piste bar can be found downstairs in one of Soho’s most popular bars, Archer Street. It’s a mix between a ski-lodge and an edgy industrial building. The booths make for a cosy hide-away from the busy bar and mixed wood and metal bar give it a trendy edge. Piste, like its upstairs counterpart Archer Street, isn’t the roomiest of bars. If you haven’t reserved a table and the bar is full, which it will be, standing space is limited. On a Friday evening at 6.30 it was full with the ‘after

understatement. The intimate cinema had around 20 large leather armchairs, with individual area to place your cocktails and popcorn. Of course I opted for a Martini, it’s all in the name! The film being showed was ‘The 5 year engagement’, it was an enjoyable chick flick which felt even funnier when viewing in intimate surroundings. After the movie we were escorted down another set of stairs which led to a discreet opulent ample sized dining

room. As part of the Martini Movie night there was a set menu with a choice of three dishes for each course. For my starter I opted for the Scottish Salmon tartare served with beetroot and pennywort. Although this was rather petite it was packed full of flavour and interesting textures! My guest choose the vegetarian option of Slow poached hen’s egg, truffle mayonnaise and apple remoulade. It sounded lovely and exotic but it was simply a well cooked egg with plenty of garnishing. For my main I picked the Pan fried sea bream, confit garlic,

samphire and red wine jus, this was a straightforward dish, presented nicely and the fish was cooked to perfection. I also sampled my friend’s main of Wild mushroom risotto with aged parmesan; this was pleasant but a little too rich! Desert - with a classic such as sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream on the menu it would be just wrong not to pick it. After such a filling meal I could only taste a small amount of pudding. My spoons full were wholesome, warm and had just the right amount of toffee. As far as the whole Martini Movies experience, I think it is worth the £42 pp. It is a twist on average Friday night out in the sense that dinner and the movie is the norm, however a visit to One Aldwych allows you to do the norm with sophistication and special treatment. Try it, it won’t hurt! Info: www.onealdwych. com

work’ crowd and as they drifted out, the ‘in it for the long haul’ clubbers and drinkers came in. The bar was always full but noone needed to wait very long before being served as there was plenty of staff on hand to deliver a well made cocktail, or a well poured glass of wine. If dark spirits hit the spot then I’d recommend the Courvoisier based French Kiss or the Pampero Especial Rum and cinnamon based Cuban Cigar. The drinks aren’t cheap and the drinkers reflect this. The £10.50 cocktails and £25-£42 bottles of wine are suited to those who either want one well made cocktail before heading off for

something a little cheaper, or those late 20, early 30 somethings who are proud of their large bar tabs. Whichever group you fall into you’ll enjoy your time at Piste, but bear in mind

the toilets are mixed, so don’t be alarmed to see the opposite sex emerge from the cubical next to yours! Info: 3-4 Archer Street, South Soho London, W1D 7AP. www.archerstreet. co.uk/our-bars/piste-bar

star on the British art scene. A self taught artist, Mulligan was a 2012 finalist for the BP Portrait award and subsequently had his work exhibited at the prestigious National Portrait Gallery in London. Mulligan is unusual in that he not only taught himself how to draw and paint with both hands simultaneously, he also taught himself how to build houses and landscape gardens which he did on a professional basis for a number of years to supplement his practice and to look after his family. A full time artist now, Mulligan’s career has taken on a new direction following the recognition he received from earning a place as a BP Portrait award finalist. He took time out of his busy schedule to discuss 14 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

How are you? You sound like you have a cold! No, it is my voice. When I had my first child 20 years ago, I was so overwhelmed with the whole experience that I lost my voice completely. The doctors said that I have a nerve which stops functioning and then one vocal cord starts moving. It is paralysed and they have never been able to find out why. I am very sensitive and if you are that way inclined, you tend to take on a lot of what is going on all around you and it is a constant dilemma. I remember not being listened to and being told that I would never make money from painting. I had my first commissions when I was thirteen or fourteen years old. So I was actually making money from painting from a fairly young age. It carried on when I moved to France to be with the mother of one of my children. I taught

You said you were selling paintings from the age of thirteen or fourteen. I was not brought up in an artistic family. We lived on a farm in the country. I was on my own a lot. I did not go to school at all until I was seven. In some ways, I was kind of fully developed creatively, or imaginatively, by the time I was seven. I knew who I was and what I wanted to do. There was no art at all in my family. There was no painting; we did not listen to music. I am very connected to nature. You could say my confusion came from there. I just wanted it to finish! When I was 15 or 16, I got thrown out of school. Not because I was bad, but because I just was not doing anything. I literally stopped responding to orders. In any case, I was self taught. There were no paintings around you. People were not listening to music and you attended this regimented school with no art. How on Earth did you teach yourself to paint?

I am very lucky in that I am very instinctive. I remember seeing an article on painting and thinking that it was amazing. My parents are open minded and they were good parents. They got me some paints and I copied this painting without knowing anything at all about it. They got me a book on how to paint and I read it. When I focus on something, when I decide I want to do something, I do it. So when I decided I wanted to build a house, I had no training, there was no one to teach me, but I got a book and I looked around me and I just learned how to do it. Wow! You learned how to build houses from a book? Yes! That is amazing! I am very practical. I really believe that when it comes to teaching yourself, if you are listening and you are alive to what is going on, you can learn anything, very quickly. This is why I feel very strongly about school. I am very anti school as it stands because I believe that whatever you do, the things that you learn, they have to matter. If you want to cook, it is because you want to eat, because you want to enjoy food. You don’t learn to cook because it is the thing to do. You do things because they matter, because you need to. If you need to paint, then you are going to paint. Not just to pass the time.

When I focus on something, when I decide I want to do something, I do it

am the same way. At school and university, there were plenty of times when I did not go to lectures and I had to teach myself so that I would pass the exams. I learned better when I taught myself. Yes! I think urgency is the best teacher. We are alive, but we often don’t really feel we are alive until we might die. That is very dramatic, but in a way, that is how it is. If you feel like, “shit, this is it, this may be your last moment,” that is when you go for it. When I did the painting that is in the National Portrait Gallery now, it was a competition. You get a year to get your work ready for this competition. But I couldn’t work out what to do. On the morning that I was meant to hand it in, I did a painting of my daughter in two hours and that is the one that was accepted. Congratulations on being short listed! I was surprised, but in a way, I think that if I had worked on it longer, I would have ruined it. Yes. I have seen the painting, it is amazing! Oh, thank you! I work at it. Every day, when I draw, I do 50 drawings in one hour. I work with both hands. I paint with both hands at the same

time. I do 50 in one hour, or maybe 30 in 40 minutes. I have learned to work very fast and I believe that less is more. Even when you are doing difficult stuff, less is more. You just need to get really clear, know what you are going to do and do it. I spend more time thinking about it, dreaming about the work and less time doing. You are some sort of prodigy! I don’t think so! My belief is that everyone can do that. The question is, do you have the motivation or the desire or the energy? I would assume that you are full time? Yes, I am full time now. I was doing landscape gardening and building work, but I am not doing that any more. Did you make the decision to go full time or were you approached by a gallery? It was a decision. It has to come from you. Have you had any solo shows? I have had a few recently and the last one was... This seems a bit ridiculous, but I know that this is how people work... I had one a few months ago in London and I only sold one painting. Luckily, I didn’t pay for the exhibition, so it was not a complete disaster. Then I got accepted for the NPG and the last exhibition I did was a sell out. What would you say is your definition of success in the art world? For me personally, my definition has always been to be completely free. Freely expressing what I really want to do and just free flowing. Without worrying or being in a position where I feel constricted or not able to

do what I want to do. That is why I want the proper recognition and I want the money. My definition of success in that sense would be, to have a proper studio somewhere, to not be worried about money or thinking about it and to just be working flat out all the time because that is what I love to do. I would like to give workshops and open studios every few weeks. I am somebody who very much wants to be involved. I like to be involved with people, sharing and inspiring... But I don’t want to be organising it and to feel like I have got commitments that I cannot keep up with. I just want to be doing the work really. What would you say is your biggest achievement to date? As a man for me it is having kids and building a house. I really love my kids. I am very proud of all of my kids. Having and raising kids has taught me that there are no limitations and it has taught me about trust.

be working in multimedia, so sculpture film... Collaborating with film makers and making music. I am really into music too. I want to be involved in everything. I want to be continually and freely creating and thinking. I also love writing. I want to find a fusion of film and writing. What advice would you give to anyone who wanted to follow in your footsteps? Trust in the really simple values of working. First of all having a spark or a dream... Something that really moves you. That is the gift. The gift is to be moved. The gift is not to be good at something that is what you work at. Be moved. Have something that matters to you. Do it with trust that if you do it, then it will happen. Every long journey starts with one step. Info: For more on this interview, please visit Art Success at www. adelaidedamoah.com

of CENTERSTAGE, Baltimore; Kwame KweiArmah became a familiar face to millions of people on BBC1’s Casualty and had since then made his mark as an actor and broadcaster. But it’s his work as a playwright that has made him even more prolific as he is the first black Briton to have written a West End play. More recently this year becoming a patron of the Barry Reckord Bursary pioneering initiatives aimed at enhancing and developing emerging artists and playwrights, Lime took the opportunity to catch up with him about life lessons, new plays and what 2013 has in store. Tell us about your involvement in the Barry Reckord Bursary? I was asked to be patron of this bursary and was overjoyed to be able to say yes.

if you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything As a patron, what are your responsibilities? To advocate on behalf of Bursary in the best possible manner. You’re mostly known as a profound actor/ playwright. What does it take to become an established head in either of these fields? Thank you for profound. This is so hard to answer in a fresh or original way. In truth or the bad news is, it takes a great deal of external good fortunethings that are not in your control. The good news is every artist is driven by the things/tools that it takes to

be a leader in the field. One has to hope that the two collide. What advice would you give to someone who wanted to follow your career path? Make sure they have something to say, something burning inside that they NEED to communicate time and time again.

Who is your biggest inspiration? My mother, August Wilson, Marcus Garvey. What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far? Hard but writing and directing the opening ceremony of the world festival of black arts and culture in Senegal 2010. What do you find the most challenging? I really am not sure how to answer this question. So many things are challenging while at the

same time I’m not coal mining if you get what I mean. Maybe the most challenging thing might be making sure one stays in tune with the things you truly believe in. In life what is the greatest lesson you have learnt? Damn these are hard! That if you don’t stand for something you’ll fall for anything. Are you working on any new plays? Yes, amid new play being produced at my theatre called Beneatha’s Place- a conversation with Raisin in the sun and Clyborne Park. What about acting, what’s next? Don’t know. Don’t have anything on my docket. Info: Website: www.centerstage. org Twitter: @ kwamekweiarmah

Meet the Adebanjo’s Lime Rating: Words: Uchenna Izundu I’m sure there is a handbook somewhere in the cosmos for what it means to be an immigrant African parent because it seems no matter which country you’re from, you will recognize the dictums, mannerisms, and ideologies when sharing stories with friends and family from similar backgrounds. And this is probably what has propelled the award winning web series-comeBritish Nigerian sitcom; Meet the Adebanjos, into the top tiers of entertainment in South Africa where it is the third most viewed comedy show. There is the father who refuses to modernize in his attitudes in who should do what in the house; the matriarch struggling to hold the unit together, and the “wayward” teenage 18 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

children – Toby and Sade – who see-saw their reconciliation of the motherland values and ideas imbued by their new homeland in rambunctious and funny showdowns. The production focuses on a modern British-Nigerian family living in south London and the fact that it has been able to drum up strong audiences in its theatrical staging suggests there is strong affiliation with the dialogue and insight into this diasporic experience. However, there does need to be some character arcing and it would be interesting to see what the interaction of this Yoruba family would be with other ethnicities – rather than just the oyinbo (white person) Kevin, Toby’s best friend and neighbour. With some amusing moments of acute physical comedy such as when Pastor Michael (Andrew Apraku) gets caught up in the spirit during a fellowship in the Adebanjos’ home, director Shade Olati has found strong actors for the sitcom, particularly patriarch Bayo, played by the larger than life Wale Ojo. Comedian Tboy, also popularly known as ‘Don’t Jealous Me’ on Youtube, has a guest role as cousin Femi.

Playwrights and producers Debra Odutuyo and Andrew Osayemi have drawn on familiar themes of familial conflict that centres on culture clashes between the parents and their children – all interweaved with Nigerian British English where a noun or adjective can become a verb screaming its own meaning. So, Bayo finds that buying an anniversary present for his wife Gladys, his “sweet potato”, is nothing but pure wahala and catching his daughter in the club where he’s doing security in a scandalous Halloween outfit can only mean one thing: koboko time! The fact that the show has transferred from being a web series to Vox Africa and now sold to international audiences is a testimony to the tenacity of the producers – but their story is all too familiar, they have found it difficult to get the backing of major broadcasters here in the UK. Hopefully there will be a turn in its luck with Meet the Adebanjos as the Nigerian experience needs to do a grand slam on the British experience joh! Info: Hackney Empire. www.hackneyempire. co.uk

THEATRE

Words: Vernia Mengot

This month Lime got talking to the founder of the critically acclaimed Conspirators’ Kitchen Theatre about his new play GOLGOTHA

Gpassionate and olgotha is a

colourful new play about identity, family and destiny. Written by former professional actor and the founder of Conspirators’ Kitchen Theatre; Nirjay Mahindru, who has appeared in numerous TV and theatre shows, his new production focuses on two people who are united by blood and separated by time as they weave the tapestry of their lives. What can the audience expect from your new play GOLGOTHA? They can expect a play that hopefully explores the lives of what I describe as “the people in the shadows”, those on the margins of history, and they can definitely expect a lot of humour along the journey. It’s brilliantly directed by Iqbal Khan, and we’re lucky to have the actors Anjana Vasan and Raj Ghatak in the play. What is it about? The first half of the play explores the story of Loretta, a young Asian girl who travels as an ayah from India to England during Victorian times. Circumstances prevent her from getting back home, so we see her life and experiences in Victorian England. The second half of the play explores the

22 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

journey of her great great grandson from Kenya to England, as he looks for a better life, but as with his distant relative, circumstances and fate intervene to change his life and that of his family. You are the founder of Conspirators’ Kitchen Theatre. Tell us about the main initiatives behind the company. The main initiative was to create a new writing company that tried to move beyond a general expectation that British Asian work was solely about “Bollywood”. Further, when one talks about “British Asian” the “British” in that phrase is usually ignored. The company was set up because we felt stories set in Manchester had just as much relevance as Mumbai, stories set in Croydon as much relevance as Calcutta.

voices. They had almost become the personal fiefdoms of individuals who were pandering to the culturally elite class rather than wanting to open theatre up for all. We wanted to show that theatre is a simple process, not terribly complicated. The biggest problem which still exists today is a view that British Asian work “needs development”, and so new companies are always regarded as “in need of development” which is very annoying when, like me, your theatrical experience goes back 24 years!

Setting up your own independent company often proves quite challenging to many, what problems did you face in doing so? At the time Conspirators’ Kitchen was set up, I felt there were some funded Brit Asian theatre companies that were actually doing a disservice to the community by not fully engaging with new

What was the response from critics? Generally very positive. There will always be some plays that go down better than others, whether it’s Conspirators’ Kitchen or the RSC, but I think our last show THE HOT ZONE, which sold out everywhere it went and brought in new audiences validated our assumption that there was a market out

there that wanted to have a wider choice of material for them to engage with. Other than GOLGOTHA, what is next for Conspirators’ Kitchen’s creative journey? Our next play will be set in the United States, that’s all I say at the moment! Has writing been something you wanted to get into from a young age? I’d always wanted to be an actor but reached a point in my life where I thought to myself “I can either moan at my lot in life at not being given juicy characters to play, or I can be positive and do something about it and create my own.” So I decided to write. My first play won a new writing competition and I thought I might have a talent for it! Will you be re-visiting professional acting? No. I just don’t have the time anymore. I enjoy watching others being creative with my words.

THEATRE What is your involvement with InterAct Reading Service? I’m the Chief Executive of InterAct. We are a charity that take professional actors into hospitals and read to stroke patients. We read in 21 hospitals, 50 stroke clubs and one palliative care unit. What has been your biggest achievement to date? I’m very proud of the fact that Conspirators’ Kitchen previous show THE HOT ZONE brought in 68% of people that had never previously engaged with theatre before. What does it take to be a successful playwright? I don’t’ see myself as that but I would say to persevere, be true to yourself and your always write about the things that genuinely interest you rather than pandering to impress the cultural elite.

What has been the highlight of 2012 for you? Arsenal clawing back a 13 point deficit to overtake Spurs in the Premier League! Getting some funding to produce GOLGOTHA at the Tristan Bates Theatre, and getting the wonderful Iqbal Khan on board to direct the piece, that was a real coup for Conspirators’ Kitchen. What plans do you have in 2013 for the New Year? It would be wonderful to get GOLGOTHA on a National tour, that would be great, and I hope to produce our next play, fingers crossed! Info: GOLGOTHA is showing until 8 December at the Tristan Bates Theatre. www.tristanbatestheatre. co.uk Website: www. conspiratorskitchen.com Twitter: @Nirjay

Charlie BrownDependency Well we have already featured Charlie Brown in our interview section but hey go check out Charlie’s forthcoming debut release Dependency that sits very nicely into the lane of soulful pop. Check the vocals by Ms-D who sang the hook on Wiley’s Heatwave she smashes it! I always talk about tracks being radio friendly and this has all the hall marks of such a track that could be on the urban stations and indeed your more mainstream forces like Capital Radio comfortably. Importantly it is a track that strikes a nice balance all held together by Charlie’s revitalising and brilliant song writing a product of years and years working with some of the biggest names like Fraser T ( who was behind Adele’s smash album). In fact check out the interview because Charlie will be hooking up with Fraser T to create some magic for his album drooping sometime in Spring. Dependency out 2nd December

Bem Iordah-Faded Grace Bem Iordah is born, raised and living in Nigeria but his music can and will travel the world with his easy melodies. I actually heard of him through twitter and as you do I did a little bit of research on him and realised he was a really fresh talent. Certainly for the UK we are a little narrow minded when it comes to music preferring to stay with either that European vibe or the US. When it comes to places like Africa some

MUSIC

music releases

of us only seem to delve there when we want afrobeats. We should however make sure we are not so short sighted and embrace African interpretations of the music that we in the West might be more familiar with. Faded Grace is just such a song a sweet soul jazzy number with guitar accompaniment with a bitter sweet tale lyrically that tells the story of fallen women. Bem states, “She’s the girl who got a kid at 15 and had to drop out

of school, and maybe is the same girl I saw on the street corner at 12am, cold, but barely dressed still. Our society isn’t exactly kind to her. So yeah, I figured I’d write something encouraging for her...and for everyone else who could relate” I love this track with an unbending passion and if he continues to write with this passion and with such beautiful music then he will become a much in demand artist. Faded Grace out now

Frank Ocean-Lost I wrote a little while ago that Frank Ocean (or his marketing team) dropping his album soon after his revelation that he was gay or is it bi-sexual was the oldest form of cynical promotion going and I stand by my feelings. Controversy is a sure fire way to get people interested- if a breast is on show people want to see it, if a text is full of sex people want to read (Fifty Shades of Grey) if a book outs President’s Clinton’s wife as a person that likes cunnilingus people will read it and of course if you say you are gay when your album is dropping (or something to that effect) then sure enough people will buy it-we are that simple. Not me however I am just rather skint! Frank Ocean for the record is a truly brilliant artist that needs no gimmicks or ploys to sell his music and this latest offering from his album Channel Orange, Lost is Awesome with that capital ‘A’ (not a typo) and a clear affirmation that music in general will sell

music. Lost bumps along on a sea of a tight melody and Ocean’s emotive lyrics and I love it-Ocean takes us on a wave of delight! Out 17 December

ast-rising new UK

Seb Stone Words: Vernia Mengot

is a talented musician, producer, songwriter and singer who has worked with Guy Chambers, and has sung backing vocals for James Morrison and Leona Lewis. Entirely self taught his music is influenced by funk, urban pop and reggae and he is also the producer for other unsigned artists out of SKP Studios in West London, most recently working with rising retro girl group The Tootsie Rollers. In this interview Seb gets talking to Lime about his new EP ‘Ordinary You’. Congratulations on the upcoming release of your new EP ‘Ordinary You’ what can people expect from the release? Thank you! I’m really excited about this release (which is the second of the year). There are four tracks on the EP crossing pop, urban, funk and rock genres. I’ve written, produced, recorded, performed (vocals, guitars, drums, bass, piano) everything myself and feel that I’ve matured as an artist. For me this is reflected in the music and the songs. What were the ideas behind your new single ‘Stand’? To be honest, I was so happy with each song that it was difficult to choose just one single! But with ‘Stand’ I felt that the

Your debut album is due out summer 2013; tell us about some of the tracks that you are working on. I’m writing a lot and have songs for the new album but I’m going to write more and pick my favourites. Currently there seems to be a theme of open lyrics, strong melodies, and varied rhythms. I’m going to play around with Latin grooves, experiment with Ska and get deeper into Reggae. I’ve been listening to a lot of old school Reggae artists/ bands like Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff & Toots and the Maytals, as well as discovering new funk and soul artists. So really, the album could go anywhere! You were raised around music, what was life like growing up? In a word, brilliant! Although like any childhood as you look back as an adult you can see the rough and smooth with greater clarity. My mum was away on tour a lot of the time in my early days, which was tough for me and my sister but also immensely cool. Imagine being a young kid and going along to rehearsals and meeting the musicians that have inspired so many people. I was a very lucky boy to have been exposed to such great artists.

I intend to start 2013 as I did 2012 and get straight to work on the 1st Drummers like Steve Ferrone and Steve Gadd, bass player Nathan East, then there’s Jeff Beck, Roger Waters, Clapton, George Harrison… to be honest, the list is huge! As I said, I was a very lucky boy! Had a career in music been your main focus from a young age? Actually no. I remember vaguely wanting to be a teacher and then a businessman. I had taken business studies and economics as an A-level but got extremely bored and spent most of my time humming or thinking of a tune. Suffice to say I dropped that subject and started considering music as a career. Although I didn’t start playing, singing or writing until I was around 19/20, I was a relatively late starter. Who are your musical influences? They have a tendency to change but artists I continue

to revisit would be Ben Harper, Stephen Simmonds and Jamiroquai. I’m looking to get deeper into Tom Petty and an artist I discovered recently, Baby Huey.

MUSIC

emotion and lyrics could connect with people. It’s a song fundamentally about hope and what it feels like if it starts to wear thin, especially if you’re faced with people that like to undermine you or if you’ve found yourself in situations you just shouldn’t be in. For me, it was like a faceoff with fear.

You’ve worked with some well-known musicians. Who else do you have on your radar? Ah definitely Adele and Lana Del Rey! Could be because I fancy them both but, you know…No seriously, I’m just going to concentrate on my next release and putting a shit hot band together.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Hmm, well I try to keep myself in the present but I have BIG plans for the future. To keep it simple; I’ll continue to write, record and release music, I’ll learn new instruments, net myself a few awards and discs of various precious metals and be on the road touring. Alongside continuing to produce other bands and artists I’ll most likely have a label set up. But as always the focus will be on pushing myself as an artist. What has been the highlight of 2012? Definitely the completion and release of my two EPs ‘Human’ and ‘Ordinary You’.

This is Sincere’s third track from his upcoming album, Yours Sincerely, and it’s a grower. The dancehall rhythm is catchy and gives the track an energy that will make you want to dance. to be with them. Humble pie, this is not. However, it’s repetitive and after a few listens it feels like the entire track consists of the chorus. While the video is pretty tame for a dancehall inspired track, it does have its fair share of female flesh, you’re treated to your first glimpse after a mere six seconds. The video was filmed in

Jamaica, perfect if you need a reminder of what summer looks like. It also contains the obligatory shot of a street party where guys and girls alike are bus’ing out the latest dance moves in attire so colourful it could only have been filmed in the Caribbean. true RnB back

Iemotion it would be like f Kelly Erez was an

that I really did want to sing. From there I started going to studios and writing songs and immersing myself in my love of music.

that feeling you get when you suddenly see your best friend from school that you had not seen for ages. Kelly is bringing soulful RnB back to the fore and this movement of sorts is made more prominent by the musical landscape in the UK at present. Indeed Kelly counts that great 90’s era as her main inspiration into music with names like Maria Carey and Boyz II Men the fuel for the clean harmonies of this talented lady. While it has been a long arduous battle Kelly’s management, on point marketing and of course great music has already seen her touted as one to watch by forces such as 1Xtra. Her debut album Come To Me which is out now will warm RnB connoisseurs in the glow only a real fire can give and just like a long lost friend for some, it will bring back all those happy times from the 90’s-it’s supreme. Firstly I know you and your sister work together on your music just explain your musical relationship. There is an eight year age gap and my sister was always into music and so I would listen to her music but also listen to her creating music. I was always then surrounded by music but because my sister was doing it I did not want to copy her in a way but eventually my love for music took over. My sister and I actually just really work well together.

You can have a dream but if you do not turn up for things then it will not happen

MUSIC

Kelly bringing Words: Semper Azeez-Harris

How hard has it been getting to where you are now? You can have a dream but if you do not turn up for things then it will not happen. As a team it has been difficult from doing everything with our own budget to staying up until one or sometimes two in the morning doing promotion, doing the twitter it is constant you cannot take your foot off for one minute otherwise things just slide.

Your manager Harvey seems to have a real big game plan for you. He does but it was funny because Harvey heard the stuff my sister and I were doing and he said that this is really good and he wanted to work with us. Harvey had been in the music business before but left it and vowed he would not return but because he loved what we did and had such faith in it he decided to get back into music and manage me. It is very important to get a manger that you can obviously work with. Harvey and I both have

marketing backgrounds and so we have been coming up with ideas together but what I like about Harvey is he is such a nice person and just really professional in what he does and that is important. When did you decide that music is what you want to do? When I was thirteen a guy got me in touch with this lady who wrote songs. I was always singing at school and barmitzvahs and generally writing songs and so people knew I loved music. When this person put me in touch with this lady I realised

The album has dropped you must be ecstatic? I am definitely happy but I would have loved to put more tracks on the album for my fans and to show even more appreciation for how they have supported me. Actually my sister and I were on the phone yesterday and she was saying how the tracks coming out now are similar to the tracks she was writing when she was growing up. So we want to get back in the studio and possibly add some extra bonus tracks on the back of this album so that will be really nice. as the genres of music that occupy the musical world. While some forge ahead with their musical aspirations with no plans for any other career paths others tread the safer road to musical success.

Roses is in truth in the latter category being a successful employee at a large bank before fate decided to knock on her door like a bailiff with a chance meeting with one of the figure heads from the brilliant group Gorillaz. A few years on and the bubbly Roses has achieved a number one and worked with urban giants like Shy FX and Donaeo. addictive music!

Ithere is a small thread of n this issue of Lime

a theme running through in terms of how artists eventually achieve their dreams. Charlie Brown as the new UK sensation shows that other side of the music journey where a single minded trajectory towards success, a fragile but nevertheless resolute determination in ones talent and of course patience are the ingredients for that elusive success. Charlie in many respects is not new to this music business having worked with names like Fraser T (behind Adele’s HUGE album), Keith Sweat (a 90’s god), Wiley and Jay Sean are just a few of the names that he can reel off. Success has eluded him through a long journey that has seen him on the brink of giving up but in only a few months he has signed a deal with Universal and his first single Dependency a RnB banger is due to be unleashed. At Universal studios Lime got talking to the guy that just may be finally realising his dream. RnB seems to be a major part of your music al history but what was your musical history? I did not grow up in a musical household as such no one was in a band or anything but my dad was really into Motown Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye so I guess from a young age it was there. So when I was old enough to buy my own music I got into the 90’s RnB era. When SWV first came out I was 32 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

obsessed. I think I was saying to someone earlier that I had to buy three copies of SWV It’s About Time because I played it so many times that each cd I bought just eventually stopped playing.

What about Keith Sweat you must have been feeling him? Definitely and funny enough I actually met Keith Sweat in 2007. I was out in Atlanta writing with a guy called Fitzgerald Scott who wrote all of Keith Sweat’s hits back in the day and so he just decided to take me to Keith’s house unannounced but he was completely cool. You have had your fair share of ups and downs what was the lowest point for you? Probably the lowest point was a couple of years I was out in LA and I had basically moved there and I was writing with a couple of producers and it really looked like I might get signed to a particularly US label. Then due to bad management things did not turn into anything and I ended up coming back to London in 2010. I think that was the closes that I came to being broken and just thinking that this music career was just never going to lift off for me. How close were you to giving up? Very! I think that if anyone says that I have never thought about giving up I think it is a lie because if you have been through a rollercoaster then I cannot see how it would not cross your mind or at times

knock your spirits. It was not a question of how much I wanted this thing it was a question of how many more times could I keep having my spirit broken to come back again? How did you get that energy for music back? I just took time out and stayed away from the studio I was getting calls from my publisher to do stuff and I just did not want to go in because I knew I was not going to be a good person to be around at that time-not for long just for a month or two and it was during this time actually I soul searched and came with the energy to go for it again! Why is it now that success is beckoning for you? I do not know why it is happening the way it is. I mean Fraser T I worked with years before all the Adele stuff and I am getting back with him in the new year but I know this is a cliché and maybe it is a cliché because it is true but I think things honestly do happen at the right time. I can honestly say that there has never been a time in my career until now that I can stand behind a body of work and be confident to say this is me! So give the meat on the bones about your first single Dependency. I wrote it with this production team called Nexus and it was the first day we met and they must have thought I was the most miserable guy ever because I did not see then for ages after that. What

happened is that on that day before studio I had literally been on the phone calling this girl like ten times. You were in a relationship. Yes but she could not forget about her ex and so I was the other guy. I remember thinking that getting this person to come off their ex is literally like getting someone off heroin you are losing this and you will not win this battle and that is where the title dependency came-the person is addicted to this person. And what about the album of course what can we expect? I know there is some stuff scheduled with Fraser T next year I am really looking forward to get into the studio with him also Red One and there is a guy in America I know called Wayne Rodriguez that I have a brilliant writing relationship with so it is going to be excited.

2013

And the new year will bring..... The new album will be dropping in spring but I am excited because there are so many opportunities that are open to me and I love not knowing what is going to be happening for me next year-it’s great! December’s

Words: Cassam Looch

new movie releases Lyear, 2012 has been ooking back at the

slightly disappointing at the cinema. Sure there have been some notable successes, but the overall quality has been of lower quality than previous years. ‘Avenger Assemble’ has been the stand-out hit, and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ wasn’t too far behind, but those films aside the Summer blockbuster period was a bit of a dud. A late surge had been provided by the spectacular returns of ‘Skyfall’, which is well on track to be the biggest film ever at the UK box office. The final instalment of ‘The Twilight Saga’, is also doing great business, but is unlikely to holdover as well as the James Bond movie. December usually provides us with a few more big hitters, some of which will come loaded with Oscar potential. This year, most of the real contenders seem to be holding off until January, but there are a couple of films that will hope to grab the attention of the critics, as well as the paying punters.

The Man with the Iron Fists

Peter Jackson returns to Middle Earth with the first part of his trilogy based on ‘The Hobbit’. The success of ‘Lord of the Rings’ is unlikely to be replicated, and concerns have already been raised about the decision to split such a short book into three films. However with the boost of 3D as well as the promise of the best visuals yet, perhaps we might be underselling this epic. Jackson is also responsible for another film out this month. A big hit at The London Film Festival, ‘West of Memphis’ is a documentary about a horrible miscarriage of justice and offers something different to the blockbusters and adaptations that will be otherwise populating the multiplexes. ‘Life of Pi’ is Ang Lee’s take on a classic novel,

The Hobbit

34 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

‘Gremlins’ will be getting a re-release this Christmas, and if you’re after a modern day equivalent the hilarious ‘Grabbers’ is also out at the end of the month... if you can find them both playing at the same time you have yourself the perfect creature feature doublebill.

Life of Pi

and he too has opted for 3D. The trailer looks stunning, although the story does come across as difficult to translate to the screen. Do you fancy spending 2 hours plus in the company of a boy in a boat who only has a tiger for entertainment? Another controversial literary adaptation is ‘Jack Reacher’, which hits the screens on Boxing Day. The main bone of contention here is the casting of Tom Cruise in the title role, although there is a strong supporting cast which improbably includes zany director Werner Herzog amongst its number. Rapper RZA stars in and directs ‘The Man with the Iron Fists’, a special-effects heavy martial arts flick. It’s got mixed reviews from the US, although we’re keen to see Russell Crowe in his much-vaunted cameo role.

The rest of the month is full of smaller films that probably won’t get much of a chance, and you might as well save your money for some of the early 2013 releases which promise to be spectacular.

Django Unchained

Just as a taster, there’s Steven Spielberg offering up his biopic of Abraham Lincoln, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn in ‘Gangster Squad’, Anne Hathaway singing her heart out opposite Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman in ‘Les Miserables’ and Jamie Foxx starring with Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L Jackson and Kerry Washington in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Django Unchained’. We can’t wait!

December Madame Brouette Another superbly balanced social drama from Senegal, directed by Moussa Sene Absa. Told partly in flashback, it concerns the investigation of the murder of a police officer, presumably by his enraged wife Madame Brouette (Niang). Brouette runs a fruit cart through the streets of Niayes and despite her lowly means and responsibilities is known as a defender of women abused by their husbands or lovers. Absa conducts us through her hard-pressed working days, her family and social life to throw light on her condition. Remarkably, he always keeps the tone open and lively, incorporating an ‘Afro-Brechtian’ griot chorus to comment on the action and using the music to enhance the emotional atmosphere. Lime’s Xmas

Oanticipated films ne of the most

“When we filmed it on the streets were doing some serious speeds. It can hit 100mph...” When you see the size of the thing, up close, you get a real sense of what an achievement this really is.

of the year, arguably the most anticipated film of all-time, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is the epic conclusion to the Batman trilogy as imagined by Christopher Nolan. As well as the realworld reinvention the director has also created a number of iconic characters for the big screen. One which has remained constant is The Tumbler, the brutally uncompromising Batmobile that Christian Bale has used since the first film.

We were given a chance to ride along in the vehicle at a top secret location. Not only that but we also spoke to Chris Corbould, the special effects supervisor on the trilogy. It really was an opportunity that we couldn’t pass up, especially with The Dark Knight Rises about to hit the shelves on DVD and Blu-ray. Lime sent along Movies Editor and self-confessed bat-nerd Cassam Looch, and here’s what happened.... Before I got in the Tumbler, I got to see and hear it race around the track. It growled as imagined it would, surely this was just for the benefit of the movies? “Absolutely not. What you here in the film is all real, we haven’t added anything to make it louder” said Chris Corbould, the man who helped create the vehicle. The original concept came from Chris and Jonathan Nolan, and at first Corbould thought it was going to be a tough ask to bring it to life from 36 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

the pages he had been given. “The wheels, for example, we thought we were going to have to make especially. But the numbers we would have to manufacture just made that impossible, so we looked online and managed to find them. It’s a real vehicle, you’ll see when you go round the track that it can do almost all of the things you see on screen”. Clearly this just made me all the more eager to get into the vehicle.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES TUMBLER AND CHRIS CORBOULD

As I made my rather clumsy entry into the passenger side, I could see what Chris meant when he talked about the views from inside. I was in the same cockpit that had been home to Christian Bale, and Chris mentioned how eager the actor was to do as much of the driving himself as was possible. There are four working Tumblers in existence. A fifth one was destroyed in the course of filming. Corbould says that we get to see it do pretty much everything that is possible with such a creation. In The Dark Knight we saw the dramatic reveal of the Batpod bike emerge from the bowels of the wreckage of a Tumbler, and in final instalment Bruce Wayne takes to

the air when the streets of Gotham become overrun by cops and goons, all eager to capture Batman. For my ride I was going to be on the ground, but believe that was an experience like no other. The sound is deafening, and the ease with which we raced around corners came as a real surprise. This is a huge object, but it can handle almost everything that is thrown at it.

It’s unlikely that you’ll be getting one of these for Christmas this year, but why not check out what it can do when The Dark Knight Rises hits the stands on various formats. My Christmas came early though; this was a truly memorable experience... I’m still smiling as I type this. The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight Trilogy arrive on Bluraym, DVD and digital download from 3rd December.

Obig hits was the superb ne of this year’s other

documentary ‘Searching for Sugar Man’. Malik Bendjelloul tells the story of Rodriguez, one of the most important voices in a generation. Following early success, especially away from his native America, the reserved singer-songwriter disappeared into obscurity. Rumours circulated about what had happened to Rodriguez, including reports about him dramatically committing suicide on stage. The truth, as ever, is for more interesting... “It’s a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music, and that music can be heard on the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, available now through

Sony Legacy Recordings and Light In The Attic Records. Comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality (reissued to critical acclaim in 2008 and 2009, respectively), the soundtrack begins with the otherworldly Sugar Man and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician’s fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psychfolk.”

Young Adult

ALSO RECOMMENDED One for the family ‘Avenger Assemble’

A smash-hit, probably the best Blockbuster of the year, this is the perfect film to gather round and watch over Christmas. There is something for everyone, with action and humour by the bucket load. One for the kids – ‘Brave’ It might not be the usual Pixar fare, but this lively animation is entertaining and stunningly visualised. It’s hard not to get drawn into the story with

excellent acting from the voice cast to go with the flawless look of the film. One for the big kids – ‘21 Jump Street’ Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill team up for this remake of a Johnny Depp TV series. Rather than playing it straight, the hapless duo go for the laughs and it pays off wonderfully. Great gags and a cameo you will have to see to believe. Also worth getting... We really enjoyed ‘Ted’ earlier this year. It might

be a bit near the knuckle for some, but if you’re used to the ‘Family Guy’ brand of humour, where nothing is off limits, then this is one you’ll be chuckling along to well into the New Year. ‘Prometheus’ might not have met it’s own lofty ambitions, but the Bluray does offer up more answers to those of us who were left just a bit bemused by the film at the cinemas. You might not want to give ‘Young Adult’ to that special lady in your life, especially if you

want her to talk to you ever again, but Charlize Theron is outstanding in the title role of this indie comedy. Just don’t make the mistake of telling her that the character reminds you of her... ahem, not that anyone we know was that silly... And finally, if you really want to get the bloodpumping this Christmas, how about offering up the insane action of ‘The Raid’? The perfect gift for him, trust us, we’ve seen the reaction at several screenings, and it’s been nothing short of ecstatic!

Lime’s film rev Rise of the Guardians

A group of immortal guardians, including Santa and The Easter Bunny, have to fend off the return of an evil force. Pitch Black is looking to send the world back into the Dark Ages, and the only way of stopping him is to recruit the impish Jack Frost. It feels like a Christmas movie, even if it has a whole host of other individuals along for the ride. The visuals are adequate for the most part, with a couple of sumptuous scenes that really stand out. The story sees Frost, voiced by Chris Pine, trying to come to

terms with who he really is and this is a message that the kids will get into. It does feel more aimed at a younger audience than some recent animations, but this is a welcome change. It feels like festive films of old, and so the main criticism is that it’s coming out a month too early! It should stick around for

a while though, and with little in the way of direct competition it could be a surprise hit. Besides, where else can you see a big Australian bunny that sounds like Wolverine? Release Date: 30 November Voices of: Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin and Isla Fisher Lime Rating:

Midnight’s Children

The subtext of missed opportunities following 38 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

The trailer suggests ‘Glee: The Movie’, but don’t let that put you off. This is one of the smartest films of the year and some of it borders on utter genius. Beca (Anna Kendrick) reluctantly attends university, desperate as she is to start her music career in L.A. Her father promises to fund her move, if she sticks it out for at least a year. She is even more reluctant to join The Bellas singing group, an all-girl band of misfits who are desperate to win an upcoming competition.

Salman Rushdie’s dense source novel tackles the thorny issue of the partitioning between India and Pakistan. It combines mysticism and politics, something that the film also attempts. Although the screen version isn’t perfect, it is incredibly ambitious and can’t be faulted on that basis. The characters are given what essentially add up superpowers, and this might seem like a blunt way of dealing with serious issues, but it is handled with a touch of class.

Pitch Perfect

the division of a nation never picks a side, faulting both parties. It makes you want to go out and find out more about what

really happened and that is the films biggest success. Release Date: 26 December

Her unusual taste in music adds energy to the tame repertoire The Bellas have been used to, but as Beca begins to bond with her colleagues, she begins to realise that she might not fit in anywhere.

It’s predictable, but also ludicrously entertaining. The references to classic 80’s films are well played, and the song and dance numbers are barn-storming. Kendrick reveals a great voice, and her take on Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ is going to become an instant classic. Rebel Wilson might be playing the same character she always does in Hollywood, but this time it works to hilarious effect. The supporting characters are also excellently sketched out, and there are laughs by the bucket-load. If you’re looking for fun film for Christmas, this is perfect. Seven Psychopaths It was always going to be tough to follow the success of ‘In Bruges’ with a myriad of critics and commentators waiting to take pot shots. Writer/Direcctor Martin McDonagh has taken this challenge on, and created a film which is essentially a document of his struggles to write a smash hit followup. Just as the action is about to reach a crescendo the main character addresses the viewer (via a proxy) to explain why

If you haven’t heard of the legendary producer DJ Chuckie, then you soon will. Ripe from the Dirty Dutch Exodus Gig at ADE in Holland, I caught up with Chuckie ahead of his gig in Brixton Academy on December 8th to talk about his passion for the craft and what’s in store for 2013.

DJ Chuckie Words: Amy Coyle

Sup in South America. o Chuckie, you grew

How did the culture there influence your love of music? Music plays a huge role in the lives of South American people, it is such a big part of the culture there and it’s something that immediately made an impression on me. Suriname, the country where I was born, is very multicultural – there are people of many different religions and ethnicities so I grew up surrounded by a real variety of cultures. That exposed me to a variety of different musical styles at a young age and I think that openness towards other genres is something that has stayed with me all my life. Good music is good music, regardless of genre. South American people love to party too and the music there reflects that. So I guess

44 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

you could say the spirit of South America comes out in my music too. Why the move to Holland? Was there something there specifically that you felt would further your passion for music? I moved to Holland at a young age. My parents moved there and I went with them, most probably without even being asked if I wanted to! But I encountered even more styles of music there, from hip-hop to electronic music and my passion just grew and grew. How did you get involved with Amsterdam’s famous ‘Dirty House’ sound? Are there any other genres of music that you can’t live without?

What do you listen to when you’re not on tour or playing at one of your many residencies? I have always been into lots of different genres of music. I suppose hip-hop was one of my first loves. I really got into the scene whilst living in Holland as a teenager. Although I still love hip-hop now, other interests grew from that. I got into late 80s Break-Beat and then early 90s Drum & Bass and things like that. My music taste just carried on evolving (as it still is today) and I started to discover house music. It was a natural progression for me. You can hear all those influences spilling out of me during my sets. It’s a part of who I am!

You’ve played all over the world, where is your favorite spot to play or

your favourite crowd to play to? You know, it’s so hard to pick out a definitive list of my top places to play. I’m lucky that I get to travel the world doing the thing I love most. I get to see so many amazing places, meet inspiring people and play at the best clubs around. As everybody knows, electronic music has really blown up in the states and it really is special to play over there. Vegas, for example, have just taken it to the next level as far as clubbing goes. My residency there is special. The club is incredible and the crowd is always amazing. Every time I’m there we all party like crazy.

What is your live set-up? Are there any favorites that you like to sneak into a set occasionally? And are such long sets hard to pre-plan for? I spend time going through my records on the plane or in my hotel room before a gig, but I never have a rigid plan or anything like that. It’s the spontaneous moments where you just go with a feeling that make the real special nights, so I like to keep that vibe throughout my sets. As for favorites… I have so many and I get to play them often as I play a broad spectrum of music when I perform in clubs.

been a huge year for you so far, in saying that, what has been your highlight of 2012? Yeah, it is going to be an amazing night in London. The O2 Academy in Brixton is a great venue and we’ve got all the Dirty Dutch crew over for it. It will be the biggest ever UK show for both Dirty Dutch and myself. It’s really going to push me to the limit, as I will be playing for 6 hours. But I’ll get the chance to go back-to-back with loads of amazing Dirty Dutch DJs who are also my friends. I couldn’t be more excited about it. The Exodus concept has been a massive success so far. In October we took over the Ziggodome in Amsterdam as part of ADE in October and it was just unreal. 17,000 people going nuts to Dirty Dutch beats. As I mentioned before, London is a great place to party and being able to bring Exodus there is very, very

exciting. Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before because this is going to’ be one hell of a party!!!

in

2013

2010 - 2012 has seen you focus more on your own productions; can we expect more from you in 2013? Will you spend time recruiting more talent for your label, Dirty Dutch Records? Or have you something entirely new planned up your sleeve? I’m always working on new projects; it’s a never-ending cycle. I’m trying to make each year bigger and better than the rest. I am going to continue working on new music,

keep working on an album and try to bring some fresh sounds. I will also of course continue bringing through new talent through Dirty Dutch. The label is very important to me and it is a great feeling when I can help bring new artists recognition through it. All I’m really sure about for 2013 is that I will travel lots, play a lot of parties, make new music and have a whole heap of fun doing it! Sounds like the American Dream Chuckie, thanks very much for talking to us, and best of luck with the gig in Brixton Academy, London is looking forward to it!

COMEDY CLUBS

I often wake up in Vegas and my room looks like the set of The Hangover. London is also an amazing city to come and play to. The crowd is always full of real music people and that makes for the right kind of atmosphere and I’m really excited to play there again.
