Dempster

We took a little time out to speak to Kemal Dempster from acclaimed dance group Plague

P

lague may not be a household name but they are one of the strongest UK dance crews around. All seven members of the crew will be performing at the 8th annual Breakin’ Convention, an international festival of hip hop, dance and theatre which takes place at Sadler’s Wells this month. Kemal, tell me about Plague, who are you and how long have you been together? We’re a dance crew that were formed back in 2000. We started off as a group of three but now there are seven of us. Plague was created by a guy called Mukthar who is now on tour with Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas. Mukthar decided to put a group together and then started scouting people, entering competitions and went on to win several trophies, practically every competition in the UK. Our members are Shawn, Bly, Eharmesh, Roxy, Brooke, Natalie and me. None of the original three are still in the group. The fact that we’ve grown in numbers is good, as we can now do more complex moves and visually it looks a lot better. What is your biggest achievement as a group? We won the World HipHop Championships in 2005. Plague are the first ever UK dance group to win the title so this

is by far our greatest achievement. Winning the World Championships is a massive thing for the crew. Other UK crews have won similar titles in Europe but never in America. Also two of our members performed during the 2008 Olympics closing ceremony in Beijing. Another two of our members toured with the show Africa Africa. We believe if you work hard enough your talent you’ll get notice. How do you all come up with new routines? There are people in the crew who specialise with particular movements. We listen to the music first and then decide what to use. So if we’re doing a locking piece we might want a funky tune with accents and probably use a fast tune, to show natural rhythm and power. As a group Plague specialise in popping, locking and house. If a few of us didn’t think a move was working we would speak up and give suggestions. If everyone agrees to change it then we’ll change it. We work as a team. Plague has accomplished a lot over the years but do you have more goals to reach? It would be great for Plague to be known more abroad. I personally would love to perform in China or

WORDS: Victoria Woode

We believe if you work hard enough at your talent – you’ll get noticed Japan, there’s a big dance scene over there that I would love to see. So what can we expect from the Breakin’ Convention? You’ll be amazed. You’ll see a lot of different styles from B-boys, contemporary dance, abstract, solos, everything. There’s an area of Ciphers – boxed off squares were people basically throw down their moves. It’s like battling but friendlier. Plague will be performing on the Saturday and Brooke will be teaching a locking workshop on the Monday.

Where in London do you think is the most romantic place for someone to propose? I would say the Southbank at sunset. Big Ben and The London eye in the background looks beautiful.

The Wedding Issue

What would be your first dance with your partner at your wedding? It would be Love Never Felt So Good by Michael Jackson. Lime restaurant review: Kanteen Lime rating: Words: Micallar Walker Try as I might to be kinder and more positive in this review the words that repeatedly spring to mind are ‘distinctly’ and ‘average’. It’s hard to imagine that Kanteen is the restaurant within the K West Hotel. Languishing, undeservedly so, on the floor above the uber stylish K Lounge, the restaurant décor feels immediately dated and out of place – a piece of the ‘K’ jigsaw that doesn’t fit. The walls of the restaurant are dressed with works of art that I found to be abstract for abstract’s sake and rather intrusive. create, and I quote “new points of interest”. Waiting staff are added to the mix flaunting badly chipped nail varnish and a tendency to be overly attentive – as each visit back to my table (approximately every 5 or 6 minutes) hammered home a sketch in my head of Are You Being Served or some similar comedy of manners. And so to the food . . . . Think Sunday pub lunch and you’re pretty much there. With nothing overtly exciting on the menu, staples of steak with a choice of garlic butter or pepper sauce and half a chicken with coleslaw and spicy potatoes wedges are just about as thrilling as it gets. The dessert however remains as one redeeming feature; a mouth-watering warm apple tart

which came with an unexpected scoop of vanilla ice cream (the menu promised honeycomb). Harsh you may say, but I urge you to visit Kanteen for yourself and perhaps (I sincerely hope) you may come away having had a more satisfying dining experience. Lime’s guide to LONDON’s

hen party scene From Burlesque to flower arranging – our hen party suggestions offers something for everyone Hen/stag party suggestion:

The Wedding Issue

the Burlesque night Lime event review: Wam Bam Club | Lime rating: Words: Jennifer Rock For anyone seeking an alternative hen or stag night experience then a trip to Café de Paris for an evening of Wam Bam entertainment Viva Las Vegas style might just be the thing to get the party started. Our night kicked off with an introduction to the art of burlesque, with pre-show classes run by Burlesque Baby who offer a selection of hen inspired parties. Today our class led by Gemma of (Cabaret Rouge) walked us through a three part routine complete with the pre-requisite feather boa. Not to be taken too seriously our group of about 15, soon got into the character and feel of 1930s cabaret, though a slightly larger performance space may have enhanced the realism. But leave any inhibitions at the door because it is all in good fun. Just before the Wam Bam club night of comedy, magic, music and Burlesque started we were seated at large round tables with other guests

and soon tucked into our threecourse dinner topped with a glass of champers. From the French inspired menu I opted for the Boneless Tamworth Pork Rib on a bed of Sweet Mash Potato, without being too filling, it left me pleasantly surprised by its texture. My main was Pan-Fried Sea Bass with Steamed Vegetables. My guest tucked into the Goats Cheese Roast Pepper Roulade to start with a generous portion of Rib-Eye Steak as her main, leaving her impressed by the generous portion. Her dessert was the Chocolate Bavarois which is for the chocolate lover. Whereas my Braeburn Apple and Cinnamon Tarte was a combination of three delicious desserts wrapped up in one and envied by other guests. As we ate, tributes were paid to comic actor Charlie Chaplin on the overhead screen on what would have been his 122nd birthday. Then before long it was time for the entertainment to begin. The show’s host Lady Alex graced the stage with girls from Cabaret Rouge who were decked out in white can-can attire, true show-girl style. The audience were then treated to elements of the exotic including fire dancers, aerobatics with an element of humour provided by one of the world’s most unlikely male ballet dancers and even an Elvis impersonator. My favourite was the 18th century style

renaissance trio dancing to contemporary r&b numbers. The Wam Bam club performers sung as they wandered through the crowd singling out willing and non-willing participants for frivolous and spirited banter. It was a full house with a mixed audience and plenty of men and women on hen or stag nights enjoying themselves and soaking up the atmosphere. By the end of the evening we were on our feet arms swaying to an old Queen classic which drew the evening to a close. Those AHB BBH page ad

who dared then retired to the boudoir, a discreet red velvet themed room tucked away to the rear with oversized beds, walled mirrors, providing the perfect ambiance to possibly indulge in your own Moulin Rouge moment. Having opened its doors on St Valentine’s Day 2011, W Hotel in Leicester Square is the latest in a long line of global establishments that pride itself on being all about the glamour. With 192 guestrooms, including the appropriately titled Marvellous and Fantastic Suites and the Wonderful Rooms, the location personifies modern culture having been incorporated with designer mirror balls, fashionable artwork and ‘bling’ covered doors at every turn. The venue is also known as The Party Hotel and this can be seen as you walk along the darkly decorated corridors, that alleviate rather than aggravate a hangover, and enter the padded lift – which I was told was to prevent drunken guest injuring themselves as they stagger back to their rooms. Restaurant means it an ideal location for a sophisticated hen night getaway or if you fancy something a bit more riotous the suitably named Wyld Bar and dance floor should do just the trick. While I was initially impressed with its contemporary chic I couldn’t help wonder how long the design would last as with such focus being placed on the style of today – surely in a few years time it would become and feel dated? I also couldn’t help pick up a slight pretentious air as the hotel made every effort to scream

at you just how great it thinks it is. The cheapest of the rooms is still a rather pricey £268 per night and upon inspection of the Wonderful Room I did think it felt a little cramped. W Hotel is undoubtedly the place to be photographed and be seen but unless you happen to have an A-list budget to match you could just be in for an expensive lesson in style over substance. and creativity as we got to grips with bending, preening, trimming, and shaping to get the full flower arranging experience. After the session I felt educated and more knowledgeable on how to select and get the best out of flowers. Stormy cater for groups of about 20 people for the flower masterclasses and or they can come and show you how to professionally decorate your abode with flowers according to your house style from dining room tables and bathrooms to your Christmas tree or a room for a wedding shower. Stormy are flower connoisseurs who only use flowers that are season and with a studio based inside Covent Garden Flower Market the flowers are guaranteed to be fresh. We are told the flower school will reopen in Covent Garden Flower market within the next two months.

The Wedding Issue

If you want to stay away from the stereotypical hen party experience with something more sophisticated then a Kenneth Turner Flower Arranging Masterclass might be what you’re looking for. This is ideal if you want to include your mother, grandmother or great aunt as flower arranging can appeal to all age groups. Kenneth Turner Flowers, one of Britain’s most established florists, marry flowers with candles and room fragrances which are sold across the globe and in London at Harrods and Selfridges amongst other places. The masterclasses are run by Stormy lead by Laura Lee who worked with the influential florist, Kenneth Turner for 25 years and her colleague Jon Poulsom. They have partnered with Cheval Residences and the idea is that flower arranging masterclasses can be held for those staying at the apartments and want a one to one to learn how to create beautiful flower arrangements. Our group were each given a basket, pussy willow, moss and an orchid which we had to personalise using various props and scissors. Having never done anything like this before I was surprised at how relaxing and calming the whole experience was. The session encouraged giggles

Wedding tip from Laura Lee: flowers that are popular now are Garden Roses and Lily of the valley. Gerbera’s are no longer in fashion. Oh, and if you want your orchid to last then it shouldn’t sit in water. Info: www.kennethturner. com | www. chevalresidences.com

Malta for HONEYMOONERS

WORLD EVENTS

A Mediterranean retreat for culture vultures

Words: Amardeep Sohi

N

ewlyweds who are looking to soak up more than sunshine on their honeymoon should look to Malta as their destination. Located between Sicily and North Africa in the Mediterranean Sea, this archipelago is often perceived as a picturesque retreat, ideal for water sports and sun bathing. But its central location has created a diverse and relatively undiscovered arts and culture scene. I went to see for myself exactly what Malta could offer the couple looking to combine sun, sea and cultural sights. My first stop was to the old capital city of Mdina, which is located in the heart of the island. As a walled city, it remains an enclosed space and houses approximately 200 people who live alongside (and inside) the palaces, museums and the Cathedral of St Paul. Aside from a few parked cars, Mdina appears untouched by modernity, which only adds to the allure of the city locked in time. The narrow, deserted lanes are perfect for a long, romantic stroll, amongst a combination of medieval and baroque architecture. If you visit in the afternoon, you’ll catch the sun as it hits the globigerina

10 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

If you’d like to dip back into the magic of being on honeymoon, the waterfront in St. Julians is the perfect spot for an evening stroll limestone, turning the buildings golden. Mdina offers superb views of the island so it’s an area to savour, especially considering the bustling area of Rabat waits anxiously outside. The capital city Valetta is equally busy and it’s most precious building is St John’s Co-Cathedral. Inside the church has been decorated with an extravagance which brings the soul to an abrupt halt. Art lovers will also be taken aback by the painting by Caravaggio which thrusts the preceding extravagance into submission. The Beheading of St John the Baptist is the only signed painting by Caravaggio. His delicate strokes have created an image that leaps out of the frame like a 3D image. It left an impression, long after exiting the Cathedral. As you wonder along the parallel streets of Valetta, a tour of the Casa Rocca

Picolla gives an intimate context to Malta’s history. It’s a lived in museum which continues to be the primary residence of the De Piro family. Honeymooners may want to pay special attention to an ancestral bed, which is thought to bless those who touch it. Theatre lovers are also well served in Malta. The Manoel Theatre in Valetta is Malta’s national theatre. The building itself dates back to 1731 and was commissioned by Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena. It stands proud as one of the oldest theatres in Europe and the interiors are lavish and ornate. Although panto is a firm favourite amongst the Maltese, concerts, plays and operas are all performed at the Manoel. Anyone looking to be exposed to opera for the first time will not be disappointed. The performances are subtitled and if you’re lucky enough to get tickets for the opening night, you may be in the company of the President and Prime Minister. Theatre-lovers should also visit the neighbouring island of Gozo in October, where opera forms the central event at a cultural festival. The opera and

festival are produced solely by the community, and take a full year to prepare. The Astra Theatre and the Aurora Theatre are the two main theatres on the island. Valetta has a lot to offer but Malta’s cultural landscape is not limited to the densely populated city. A defining characteristic of the island is the fact that Malta is home to temples which pre-date Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids by 1,000 years. Even if you’re not necessarily keen on archaeology, it’s fascinating to step into a time before technology. The Ggantija Temples are located on the island of Gozo, a short ferry ride away from Malta. But the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples are the most impressive. They sit on a cliff top in southern Malta, facing the isle of Fifla. Surrounded by a heritage park, the area is serenity personified. When walking between the two temples, the air is light and silent – the perfect escape from city life. For honeymooners, the waterfront in St. Julians is the perfect spot for an evening stroll. The pretty gardens and contemporary lounge at Palazzo Naxxar are also worth a visit. Info: www.visitmalta.com

PICTURE Perfect

Beauty tips from model and Miss Black Britain winner Rachael Williams

WORDS: Jennifer Rock

W

alking down the aisle is the ultimate catwalk experience. So to help prepare our brides to be for their big day, Lime got chatting to model Rachael Williams for tips and advice on how to turn heads and remain picture perfect. Why did you go into modelling? I entered and won Miss Black Britain 2006. I started 12 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

networking with industry professionals and it went from there.

Do you use any kind of fitness or skin care regime? I’m not a fan of the gym but I like to jog and run about 3-4 times a week. You must look after your skin regardless, and eat healthy. I don’t restrict myself when preparing for a show but I won’t over eat or put on excessive amounts of weight. For commercial/editorial shoots, ideally you have to be no bigger than a size 8. Plus size would be about a 10-12 which does seem morally incorrect. I’m guessing it’s not all glitz and glamour, what is the competitive side of the industry? Mainly competing for jobs, in London there are a small amount of African-

Caribbean jobs, so if you’re put forward, you will be casting with every other black girl and they will only pick one to represent all. Tell us about your organisation We Girls Rock. I founded the company in 2009 which is run by me and my sister Rebecca Williams. We do monthly courses for young girls between 13 and 25. They are taster courses which cover sports, fashion, business and entertainment. We hire teachers to give basic insights into industries. It is fun and practical. When I was starting out I didn’t have that, I had to experience everything for myself. Do you see what the photographer sees, have you got the eye?

I do notice when I take general pictures with family and friends I look back and I can see how to make the picture better. I am dark skinned so I know that I need to make use of the light.

Describe one of your best shoots? When I went to Miami in 2010 we did a swim wear shoot for Lorena Swimwear. We were shooting on the beach and it was lovely because it was a different environment. What is next for you? I am going to Ghana where I have some photo shoots and Sierra Leone are doing a shoot honouring Michelle Obama. There’s also the Women of Excellence Awards. What would you say to Michelle Obama if you actually got to meet

What do you aspire to do after modelling? Grow with We Girls Rock. We want to have an active monthly day course where girls can interact from all areas. How does it compare to what we see on TV shows? It is glamourised a lot because so much happens behind closed doors, it can be hectic and girls with weight issues are air brushed so they look perfect. You must be used to the camera – but will you be nervous on your big day? I am a neat freak and I’m organised and what would make be nervous is wandering if my maid of honour is getting it right. I would have to take my own advice. The cameras will be on me all day so I want to keep that calm look on my face until the end of the day when I can scream and jump for joy. Where in London do you think would be the most romantic place for someone to propose? I am a romantic; I have literally planned the whole of my wedding. It would have to be somewhere sentimental for me and my fiancé. The first place we went on a date or an outside setting at night by a river or a park with lots of flowers rather than the traditional restaurant.

The Wedding Issue

What song would you choose for your first wedding dance with your hubby? I have my song in my phone. Faith Hill, I Love You or BeBe Winans I Found Love. I know my husband would have to be included as well so we would probably choose a song together. her? I don’t know (laughs). I think I would give her a We Girls Rock jumper. She is a role model to me and we haven’t got many women we can look up to. She does a lot as the First Lady, and humble as well.

Walking down the aisle… Walk very slowly; make sure you have walked in the heels before. Walk in your dress so you know how big to take your steps, rehearse your speed and smile, you’re getting married. The perfect wedding picture... Practice your smiles and poses with your fiancé; know how you want to be situated. I like my mum and dad’s picture they are hand in hand and are looking into each other’s eyes. It is sentimental and not too poesy or smiley but something that is natural. Modelling tips and beauty secrets… A few months before your wedding day work on your diet and fitness levels. If your dress is a boob tube you can do exercises to make your breasts look perfect. Or for a short dress do exercises to make your legs shapelier. Beauty wise I am strong on massages and body scrubs to make your skin look radiant. It helps to relax you. Never do anything new a couple days before. Stick to a routine so your body can get a balance for itself. Blow the budget or save those pennies? I think that you should get what you want. You should try out different hairstyles and make-up beforehand. People like to believe that the more money they spend, the better they are going to look. Don’t be afraid, you can look just as good with the simple things.

In London there are a small amount of African-Caribbean jobs, so if you’re put forward, you will be casting with every other black girl and they will only pick one to represent all LIME MAGAZINE 2011

on a BUDGET

ooking radiant is as much about make-up and skincare as your choice of clothing, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to look your best. My most important tip is to look after your skin as it really is ‘nature’s blank canvas’. Skincare is something that can be done at home and once you get used to the routine of it you’ll see the results in no time. Great skin equals a flawless base for your make up.

Industry insider and Brides and Beauty founder Joyce Connor’s advice on how to achieve bridal beauty in times of austerity WORDS: Joyce Connor

Always remove every trace of make up at night and cleanse thoroughly before going to bed. During the day drink plenty of water to achieve a fresh and hydrated appearance. Your skin will look dewy, so you will need less foundation in the long term. Cleansing twice is very important. The first cleanse removes the make up and the second cleanse cleans and freshens the skin. Use slices of raw potato, cold tea bags or cucumber to refresh the eyes. Leave on for five to ten minutes and rinse off the residue with cool water. For problem skin make sure you use the right cleanser, toner and moisturiser for your skin type. Take ‘over

the counter advice’ at an in store beauty counter to be sure of your exact skin type. If you can’t afford the recommended products check out your local chemist to find something similar, but more affordable. Lots of skincare salons also do free consultations and will give you advice on how to care for your skin. Department store make up counters have free samples available to try before you buy. Get them to test the product on you too, but go outside in daylight to check the colours on your skin.

Using a sheer foundation or tinted moisturiser will give a more natural look. Create your own tinted moisturiser by mixing your foundation with your usual moisturiser. A 50/50 blend is best. Apply in light downward strokes from the forehead to the chin. If you have oily skin avoid using heavy pore clogging foundations and switch to a mineral powder foundation instead. These can be bought at reasonable prices. Browse the Internet for bargain make up finds. Check the product isn’t laden with talc because this will cause more problems. Talc will absorb oil but it will also clog up the skin. Check through the contents of your make-up bag to find products, such as eyeshadows or lipgloss, which you bought some time ago but never used. You liked them when you bought them, so now is the time to experiment. If the unused make up is more than two years old then its time to bin it and start again.

Create new eye and lip colours by blending shades together. Check with friends if they have any new unwanted make up that they can send your way. Colouring your lips in with a lip pencil and then covering with a clear lipgloss can be effective.

FASHION/BEAUTY

Bridal Beauty If you find products that you’re unlikely to use, ask your friends to bring their own make up bags round and hold a ‘swap shop’ party. For hygiene reasons it is best only to do this with brand new and unused products that are less than 12 months old. To prolong the life of your make up keep it stored in a cool dry place. Use a lip brush or cotton bud to get the last bits out of the bottom of your favourite lipsticks. By using a lip brush to apply your lipstick you will make it last much longer on the lips. If you’re not confident about doing your own make up you can book a make up artist if your budget allows or get a make up lesson beforehand so that you can do it yourself on the wedding day. Practise getting the look regularly so you don’t forget how to do it. Now you’re ready to glow down the aisle! Where in London do you think is the most romantic place for someone to propose?

Talawa has commissioned a piece of original digital art from artists Evewright and Derek Richards. You are asking the public, what does black British mean now? I would like to ask you this question. The simplest answer for me would be having a British identity but also having other elements of the cultural, social and personal to strengthen that identity and also make it richer. What kind of responses have you been getting from your #blackbritish campaign on Twitter? For some reason there seems to be a lot of responses about food [laughs]. There was one about a Full English but with plantain and hot sauce. There is also a lot about being black and British and how you marry those identities together. What will be the end result? A series of portraits and images which are made up of small dots which can be projected on screen or on the computer and when you roll the mouse of it each one of those dots become an answer. The idea is that each one of those dots represents an answer as to what it means to be black-British. It will be at any venues that we do a production throughout the year but also by the middle of the year it will be online as we’ll have enough answers by then. It will be accessible via our website’s mini site when you roll the mouse over the questions. Please get involved by going on Twitter using #BlackBritish to @talawatheatreco.

Celebrating 25 years of Talawa

WORDS: Sophia A Jackson

Why was the The Colored Museum by George C Wolfe chosen as the production to celebrate Talawa 25 at the Victoria and Albert Museum and what’s the synergy there? Our archive is there which is the beginning of the relationship and they are interested in starting a discussion about what you keep and it’s their first time having a major theatre piece there. The play will be staged in the Old Lecture theatre which they have just refurbished and it’s just beautiful. We’re very nervous, they’re very nervous and it will be great. We chose The Colored Museum as we

wanted there to be some political thought and provoke discussion about what makes us who we are and being black British. This felt like a good place to start and George C Wolfe has won countless awards. They are staging it now in New York too. What do you think are Talawa’s greatest achievements in the past 25 years? Number one is continuing to survive – that is a major thing. I hope the men will forgive me but the fact it’s been led by stroppy women all along – Yvonne [Brewster OBE], Paulette [Randall] then me. It’s basically been

stroppy women which I think is important. Also that we continue to have a conversation with mainstream theatre that’s not about begging for a position but saying we’re here. Yvonne is fond of saying we did the first big black productions in London and now everybody else is doing it we can go off and do other things. When Talawa started we did the Black Jacobins, and the Trevor Rhone plays, nobody else was doing them. Yvonne tells the story of when she did Smile Orange it was a theatre which I think was in Hampstead. The first night there was a reasonable crowd, the second it was sold out and there was a line all around the block and the third night they came and found the theatre had been burnt down. Talawa has consistently faced a challenge and continually ask ourselves do we need to exist. We define ourselves as a black-led theatre and a black British theatre and we’ve evolved over all that time but we will continue to exist until there is no need for us. So it is survival.

Jill Scott is back

With four million album sales and three Grammy awards to her credit, Jill Scott embarks upon a new stage in her career with the June 27th release of her fourth studio album The Light of the Sun. The album is the first to be released under a new distribution deal with Warner Bros. Records and will be preceded by the single So in Love feat. r&b singersongwriter Anthony Hamilton on May 2nd. Scott said: “I’ve always looked to empower my fans through my message of love, independence and strength. A lot has gone on in my life since my last album, so I’m excited to share the new music with all of the people that have supported me these past ten plus years. This album is revealing, and I A tantalising bill of hip hop royalty. Rising from the thinking artist’s anti-violence brand of ‘conscious rap with a soulful vibe’, the bill for this once-in-a-lifetime show is a roll call of hip hop’s finest ever and most thoughtful talent. Introducing Ny talks to Lime about her forthcoming album which seems destined for success WORDS: Semper Azeez-Harris

I

n the world of grime emceeing, Ny (Nyomi Gray) is a welcome female presence who holds her own as a singer/ songwriter. A brilliant soulful vocalist she has forged a career with a steely determination that sees her to date touring with her close friends the mighty N-Dubz. With her new single Be with You, a collaboration with grime emcee Giggs soon to be released Ny is close to releasing her first album which she describes as an ‘evolution’ from her mixtapes. How did you get into music and was that always going to be your chosen career? I hated school and used music to vent any emotion or issues that I was going through. I love grime music because it is so free and open and so I used that energy to write and record my first mix-tape which I went and sold in the west end in central London for a fiver. I started to build a fan base and do shows and that’s how I got into music originally. There were a lot of other artists that were up and coming like Plan B and Sway - all trying to do the same thing so we helped each other

out a lot. Who are your influences? Growing up I loved Mariah Carey she was a huge influence. I also grew up on a lot of reggae so I loved singer Bob Marley for his writing ability and the smoothness of his vocals. You have been in the UK scene for a while now what keeps you so driven? I love to perform and I love to sing when you’re artist you need to be selfmotivated so even just seeing people’s faces when you perform, that’s what drives me.

I think the UK scene’s positive right now, a lot of artists are branching through; people like Dizzee, Tinchy, Taio Cruz and N-Dubz have all paved the way . . . obviously it’s not the kind of video that I’d be starring in (laughs) but yes it was entertaining and it got a lot of people talking about it but that’s what it’s about!

What do you think of the UK scene at the moment do you think that grime has taken over from other genres? I think the UK scene’s positive right now, a lot of artists are branching through; people like Dizzee, Tinchy, Taio Cruz and N-Dubz have all paved the way for other artists to come through. I don’t think that grime has taken over too much at all.

Your new single what was the influence and why did you choose Giggs to collaborate? When I was in the studio I wanted to do a role reversal, you always have situations where the guy’s got a girlfriend then he’s got his link or bit on the side. I just wanted to push the roles, and make it a bit more female focused so it was like it was the girl who was the one that was in control. Having Giggs on it kind of gave it that bad boy image that I think was needed for the two contrasts.

What do you think of Skepta’s video All Over the House? Skepta’s video is cool,

What plans have you got in terms of an album and what can we expect from that

album? My album’s almost finished it’s got a fusion of different sounds which is my sound and obviously better songs, an evolution from my mix-tape. What have you got lined up for the rest of the year? I am performing and releasing singles and the Be With You video is on TV now so I am just kind of going with the flow. What song would you have to play at your wedding? Oh my God, I was talking about this yesterday, When A Man Loves a Woman.

The Wedding Issue

What things do you think makes a long marriage? I think communication is key when it comes to a long marriage and just keeping the element of fun and surprise. Info: Ny feat. Giggs Be with You is out on 9 May | www.twitter. com/Nyofficial | www. myspace.com/nyofficial LIME MAGAZINE 2011

Brie Boateng talks music and her dream of a writing collective And I hear you are really busy adding the title of business woman to your many talents. I am working on my writing collective and I am working with a lot of people that believe in the idea and cannot wait for this idea to become a reality. The model is complete and the foundations are in process. I am just trying to generate the interest and create hype around the whole idea.

G

hanaian beauty Brie Boateng is a singer songwriter whose name has been buzzing around the music fraternity for a little while now. A talented painter in her spare time, this Ghanaian songstress has taken her initial love of writing to a bigger and potentially more successful level.

Having written the track Treat Me as You Will a powerful and emotive song about domestic violence, Brie’s follow-up is the beautifully catchy Free Your Mind. Straight after work Brie gave Lime a little piece of her mind. Brie I wanted to talk about the campaign against domestic violence. How did you end up writing a song and starting that great campaign? Treat Me as You Will was a song I had written based on the experiences of a friend of mine. The idea for the campaign just came about but I believe it is something that came from God. It caught a lot of attention and it was a powerful campaign. Were you always going to be a singer/songwriter? I think it was a progressive thing because I have always been involved in music from church and school. I did not really know I had the ability to sing until later. When did it become a serious idea in your mind? I reached a point in my 26 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

stations but I am still promoting it at the moment I am going away to promote it. I think it is the best track that I have put out in terms of the sound and so I was happy.

Lastly how would you describe your music? I am off kilter in fact sometimes I do not know what I like until I hear it in truth but I think my music is pop because the music and the melodies are such that they could be in a commercial environment but my music is definitely imaginative.

And what about writing because I know that is a passion. I am not doing any gigs at the moment because I have been writing for a few people: a girl called Love Rachel who is young and new and she is putting together an EP and we are working on a quirky kind of sound for the EP.

Where is the most romantic place in London for someone to propose? This place near Waterloo – it’s beautiful at night. You have the buskers and then on the other side there are loads of restaurants.

Any big names that you are writing for that you can tell me about? I have to keep quiet because I am so close to sealing it. One of the artists is in the UK and he is doing well and if I get it then I can almost see my workload decreasing because I feel then people will start coming to me.

The song you would have played for your first dance at your wedding? I think it would be If This World Were Mine by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (1967).

WORDS: Semper Azeez-Harris

I reached where I felt there was something missing in my life

life where I felt there was something missing. At that point I felt I had God in my life, I had good friends and an ok job. My friend one day reminded me how talented I was. She made it seem that I had a lot going for me that I was not using. Was it difficult to start off initially? When I did decide, I looked in my music book and I picked out two or three tracks that were solid with good lyrics and I approached a good friend of mine at college and he laid down some basic strings. I used that to approach producers and it went from there. Your latest track is Free Your Mind. Yes and it was on radio

REVIEW

Jamie Woon has been known to do hundreds of takes to get exactly the right sound and his perfectionist tendencies are evident throughout this album. He has a unique innovative sound that is hard to classify. The album throws up the occasional curve ball like the r&b tinged Lady Luck and Spirits. Others

like Middle sound like several different songs rolled into one. In other hands this track might have been a typical dance number but Woon manages to elevate it to something more. Melodic with moving vocals and peppered with sounds I couldn’t quite place it’s a song that reveals more with each listen. Gravity is another standout track and could lower a racing pulse. Woon describes Mirrorwriting as a calming record. I’d agree with him and add that it’s solid debut that lives up the hype.

hey became popular all over the US with their debut single You’re A Jerk, a fun song that spawned an infectious dance movement. Following their debut album Skinny Jeanz and a Mic, New Boyz are back with a fresh sound and a brand new single Backseat. Legacy and Ben J – real names Dominic Thomas and Earl Benjamin - tell Lime why they want to step away from the ‘jerkin’ era… What was it like going from ordinary school kids to hit makers? Ben J: It feels good just to travel away from our hometown California to a different state and have people recognise us you know. Legacy: A lot of people probably think that when you get famous it’s gonna be really different but it’s still the same. We still do the same things, we’re just a lot busier now. So, why do you want to 28 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

This new album, we had a lot of time to really work on it and our fans get to know who New Boyz really are on a personal level disassociate yourself from the ‘jerkin’ era? Legacy: I feel like if we would have kept putting out music for the ‘jerk’ movement then once we finally did decide to move on from it later, it would be a lot harder for us because they would only know us as the ‘jerk kids.’ But we don’t really have a real problem that. Ben J: We’d been making music right before the ‘jerkin’ scene you know, people was tryna’ call us one-hit wonders and saying that’s all we can do, so we just had to show ourselves as artists and show them what we can

really do outside that whole ‘jerkin’ scene. We’re artists, not dancers. You’re latest single Backseat has an electro/pop sound. Why did you go in this direction? Legacy: The first time we travelled overseas, the reaction to that type of music was crazy. We wanted to do a lot more international shows and Cataracs had a number one record with Like a G6. We already had their phone number and we were like ‘they’re about to blow up right now so we better get on a track with them now before they become like super expensive.’ So we hit them up and we did the track, sent it to the label and they loved it. Tell me about your new album Too Cool To Care... Legacy: Too Cool to Care is a fun album first of all. When we first started we had to rush to put out our first album so we put on a lot of tracks from when we

were 15. This new album, we had a lot of time to work on it and our fans get to know who New Boyz are on a personal level. Ben J: Yeah we’re leaning on to the girls with this album too because on the first, we didn’t talk about the girls too much and we were being mean with the You’re a Jerk track and the Tie Me Down songs. But yeah, this one is for the girls. How would you describe New Boyz in one word/ sentence? Ben J: New Boyz do new things. Legacy: Creative. Where do you see New Boyz in 10 years time? May-06 Jun

REVIEW

Following the highly acclaimed 2008 LP The Way I See It, soul veteran Raphael Saadiq returns with his third solo album Stone Rollin’. Recorded at his studio complex in Los Angeles, the soul inspired album features an abundance of instruments, impressively executed by Saadiq himself. Despite the album plucking tid bits of sounds from Motown royalty such as Chuck Berry and Stevie Wonder, Saadiq has expertly blended in his own personality and uniqueness to the record. With only 10 tracks, Stone Rollin is the epitome of quality over quantity. The album is not short of stomping beats with the first single Radio full of energy and clambering tambourines, similar to the bass heavy Over You. These are complimented by the smoother bluesy melodies of the title track and the dream-like Movin’ Down The Line. Saadiq’s whistle tone vocals are the perfect antidote to the loud instruments comprising the album. Stone Rollin’ is a unique throwback to the soul era with a contemporary twist that will instantly have you tapping you foot and snapping your fingers. Out now.

Joy to the

Watch out ! The Fefe Dobson freight train is coming through

WORLD WORDS: Semper Azeez-Harris

T

he award-winning Fefe Dobson is a name you may know from her mega hits on YouTube but if you do not know her well meet Fefe Dobson. The Canadian beauty is absolutely huge in her native country with her music which seems to take inspiration from Avril Lavigne and Pink backed up by soulful vocals. But she is more than a singer with her exceptional writing skills used for massive artists like Jordin Sparks and Miley Cyrus. Her second album is due for release later this year in the UK. So what were you doing today? I was doing some acoustic songs at Universal and just saying hello to the whole team who seem amazing. There seems to be a true appreciation of music out here in London so that is great. This is not your first time over in London is it? I came out here in 2003/2004 with Justin Timberlake and that was absolutely unbelievable. I grew up with N Sync and they were huge and believe I went to every one of their concerts. What was Trouser Snake like? You know it is nervous meeting someone you looked up to because when you meet them they might be horrible but he was the sweetest guy ever. How did you get into music?

30 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

Was it a hard road into music? I grew up in the suburbs with a single mum and so we did

not have a lot to go with. So I was not privileged. Everyone at school thought I was crazy for ever thinking that at some point Justin Timberlake would ever know my name but I had a vision. How would you describe your music? My music has the energy of rock and roll but it has the pop melodies but in general I just write about situations in my life. It is almost like a girl’s diary in terms of relationships. I like to mix a lot of 60s, 70s and 90s rock and roll influences and go from there. Was it difficult to go for the sound you wanted with labels? I remember a company in Canada paid some interest and they wanted to do a development deal. They had this vision of ‘Brandy Spears’ as they put it because I was a black girl with a pop voice. That made me crazy because at 14 I knew what I wanted. I asked them if we could put some guitar in there or something live and they just did not want to do it. They took me to lunch and dropped a deal and I said ‘no thanks’.

appreciate everything on a deeper level. So you are over here to promote Fefe: why now? Well it’s just the right time because I have been singing for a while now and I just want to spread my music.

MUSIC

I think music got into me. I was like 14, it was my vision and I knew I had to have a career in music. It was my way of expressing myself when I could not express myself verbally. I sang at music theatre high school and instead of going home and doing homework I would just make demo tapes.

Could you give me a little information on the album, Joy? Joy is about life and about getting joy from it. There are great songs on there and I hope people will love it here in the UK. Info: Fefe Dobson’s new album Joy is out now | www.twitter. com/fefedobson | www. fefedobson.com

This is your second official album but you had your previous album Sunday Love 2003 was shelved that must have been difficult? For sure it is like a relationship and then it suddenly ends but it was however a blessing in disguise. It gave me time to re-invent myself in every aspect and it made me

May/29 May Maggie’s 80s Themed Night Maggie’s is a 1980s themed

boutique nightclub in the heart of Chelsea named after PrimeMinister- turned-icon

Maggie Thatcher who was in power throughout this ten year period. Clubgoers can hear her famous speeches playing in the loos, while Thatcher memorabilia vies for space on the walls along with other iconic 80s images and paraphernalia. The resident Maggie’s DJ plays a fantastic range of classic music from this vibrant decade as bar tenders dressed like Tom Cruise in the 80s cult movie, Cocktail, serve up a range of drinks from Pina Coladas and Daiquiris to the unforgettable Babycham. The waitresses, meanwhile, are dressed in neon leggings and permed wigs and serve guests sat at giant rubik’s cube tables. A bottle of vintage Champagne signed by Thatcher herself (with letter of authenticity) is the centrepiece of Maggie’s. On the ones and twos

Lime magazine caught up with UKG pioneer and Radio 5 Live host DJ Spoony to talk music, football and romance

WORDS: Nicke Adebowale

S

poony, you and the Dreem Teem are legends of the UKG scene. Where did it all start? Thank you for the legends tag. Well, individually we were all doing our thing, playing various styles and genres across the years and at some point all fell in love with house music. This brought us together on the top pirate station in the capital, London Underground around ‘95. We all respected each other as DJs and spent time together socially. The Dreem Teem was borne out of this. Is it true the name Spoony came from childhood taunts? Doesn’t it bring back a little of the pain every time you hear it? [Laughs] Not so much taunts, it was just my nickname growing up. Everybody had a nickname where I lived. I looked like an older kid who was called Spoony (because of his head shape) so I became little Spoony. UKG was one of the first homegrown sounds to really make it big in the pop charts. Do you think it’s still holding its own now grime and dubstep are taking the spotlight? Music evolves, goes in cycles. Grime and dubstep are ‘cousins’ of UKG. The sound of UKG had many variations and if you listen to Zed Bias, Zinc, Pay as

You Go, More Fire Crew, all artistes that we played up and down the country, they all had elements of today’s grime and dubstep tunes. The demand for UKG sets again tells me the music has stood the test of time and may still become the prominent music on the street again. Ayia Napa or Ibiza? Wow, very difficult and both very special to me. Ibiza is legendary and I don’t think you can compare the two. I will however say I/we had some incredible times as DJs in Ayia Napa and helped to put it on the map as a destination. There are lots of clubs nights celebrating soulful house and garage of the late nineties what do you think it is about music from that era that people just don’t want to let go? The memories. We were young, free and although not always single, it reminds of a time when we had little and no responsibility. Times were different in the world generally. Although it wasn’t that long ago things have changed. The music was also special. Melodies, vocals, great bass-lines

all made the vibe what it was, couple that with the memories and there you have it. You’re a club and radio DJ how easy was it to go to being a radio personality and hosting a phone in show (even if it is about football!)? Not hard [laughs]. I love my football. Mikee B reminded me yesterday that I used to record Liverpool scoring, on cassette, and play them as jingles on the radio. Being Arsenal fans he and Timmi Magic didn’t enjoy that part of my show but they saw the funny side. Speaking of football, it’s been a tough couple of seasons for Liverpool fans should they be getting their hopes up for next season or is it going to take longer than that? We have a great manager in charge now in Kenny Dalglish. He has got the players playing for him, giving 100 per cent every game and the results have proven this. We need to invest in the playing staff however. Need a few good players to take us to the point we should be at. I’m feeling very positive about the future. As always.

What are your favourite tracks right now? Dem People Go by Dennis Ferrer feat Bola Belo, Kissing You by Miranda Nicole and Make My Heart (Layabouts Mixes) by Toni Braxton. What three records never fail when you’re trying to get people up on the floor? Get Together by Barbara Tucker. My Desire (Dreem Teem remix) by Amira and Days Like This by Sean Escoffrey. Where in London do you think is the most romantic place for someone to propose? Along the Thames at night, when it’s all lit up.

The Wedding Issue

Finally, what was or would be your first dance wedding song? The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack or Gold Digger by Kanye West. [Laughs] Could you imagine? Quickest divorce ever. Lime’s MAY Movie reviews Attack the Block Lime rating: Release date: May 13th The latest offering from the team behind Shaun of the Dead and Paul, is a highconcept sci-fi movie about the inner city meeting outer space. It’s Hoodies vs. Aliens. It’s not subtle in its set up. By asking us to identify with the criminals (regardless of their age or background, that is what they are) it’s hard to get involved in the action. Joe Cornish might be known for his humorous side, but he tones down this natural instinct for more sci-fi based development. That’s where the film’s main success is - poor characters but superb set-pieces and Chico and Rita Lime rating: Release date: Blu-ray and DVD on May 9th A very different animation to the ones we’ve reviewed recently, this sophisticated and romance-led effort manages to capture a Latin spirit with great aplomb. This powerful drama focusing on a young girl struggling against prejudice in an African village has been shown in competition at Cannes, and at the London Film Festival in 2010. Now, on general release, this is a deeply involving story that is well worth a watch. When the film addresses the real issues at hand, chiefly the AIDS pandemic in the region and the appalling conditions faced by the young, it is impossible to fault. The performances are all wonderfully judged, and there is sensitivity to direction that avoids coming across as preachy. Unfortunately there is also a tendency to slip into melodrama as a short-hand for any real development, and this hinders the whole experience. It’s a rare occurrence to be fair, and aside from these sidesteps the film is highly recommended. Cast: Khomotso Manyaka, Lerato Mvelase, Harriet Manamela

-26 May BFI African Odyssey’s – A Screaming Man Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s latest film is a warm and wise parable on male pride and status, inspired by and reflecting the ongoing civil war in Chad. Adam is a pool attendant at a well-heeled hotel in N’Djamena, the country’s capital, where everyone still calls him ‘champ’, after his days as a competitive swimmer. His son, Abdel, works under him at the pool, but the old order is changing as economic pressures force the hotel’s Chinese management to promote his son and move Adam to demeaning duty on the front gate. War, too, is upsetting the natural state of things, and Adam enters into a terrible bargain when a local chief piles the pressure on him to make a contribution to the war effort, financial or otherwise. Haroun turns the personal and emotional turmoil of his story into still, meditative filmmaking. The film’s final scenes have a wise, almost Biblical quality to them as Haroun brings his moral fable to a powerful conclusion. his year, Gisella Boutique celebrates 20 years in the business. Congratulations. What is the secret to Gisella Boutique’s success? Thanks. We’re proud to have sustained our vision for 20 years. It’s been a real adventure. Truthfully, I think the fact we’re still going after two decades isn’t down to any secret per se, but more so a combination of hard work, dedication, creative spirit and a sizeable sprinkling of good fortune.

How will you be celebrating your 20 year anniversary? Though the official anniversary falls on June 29th 2011, we’ve already begun the celebrations.I’ve been working with an artist collective known as Railroad 7 (on The Underground Railroad network) for the past year. We just showcased at Royal Society of Arts and I used Gisella Boutique’s pending anniversary as inspiration for a Gisella Retrospective exhibition entitled Bespoke Seams and Sartorial Dreams, looking back on our favourite style moments, from catwalk collections to film and television projects. The show was so much fun to do and we’re hoping to expand the concept for the London Design Festival later this year. What events are you preparing for in 2011? Beyond the anniversary festivities, we’re continuing to work on some interesting collaborations with private clients and performance artists. The 38 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

spring 2011 season’s been interesting thus far. We received a surprise commission from an artist attending The Royal Wedding and another from an OBE honouree. Those types of design collaborations are always exciting – hard work, but gratifying once everything comes together and the client is happy. What is the inspiration behind the name ‘Gisella’? Gisella is the first name of my mother and business partner. She started the business back in 1991 and I guess she liked the name enough to turn it into a permanent style statement. Who are the people behind Gisella Boutique? My mother and I work collaboratively on everything, though principally I’m on the design and marketing side, and she’s handling

What have been Gisella Boutique’s biggest achievements over the years? Among the highlights of the past 20 years, I’d have to include our shows at The Victoria and Albert Museum [V&A], Kensington as part of Kulture2Couture, shows at London Fashion Week for Fashion Diversity, as well as our television spotlights on MTV, CNN, ITV’s Dancing on Ice and Euromillions Lottery on the BBC.

How has the business handled any hardships that you have inevitably had to face over the years? The business has seen its fair share of challenges, without a doubt. Clearly we’re presently in a period of dramatic economic upheaval, but it feels like the third wave of recession we’ve experienced in the past 20 years. But what can you do in times of hardships, but try to persevere through the darker days? Having survived two decades – what business survival tips can you pass on to our readers? In an ideal world, have a back-up plan. But in the absence of a back-up plan, at least have a damn good singular business plan.

Which have been some of your favourite Who do you admire in collections? the Soul Makossa and Metallica were collections we Singer Sabrina showed during Washington in our two years at Gisella at the The V&A. They are Screen Nation favourites. I also awards. have a special affinity for our Africa05 Collection, which was inspired by our partnership in the BBC Africa ‘05 Arts season. We used part of that Africa05 collection to do a cool project with Hayward Gallery on the Southbank; working with a group of teens training in fashion photography and journalism. Projects like that, beyond the walls of the boutique are particularly rewarding.

business world and why? Many of my business role models are AfricanAmerican entrepreneurs. I admire how Oprah Winfrey has infused philanthropy firmly into her phenomenal business success. I admire social activist and educator Geoffrey Canada who left a job at Wall Street to establish the Harlem Children’s Zone; an organisation dedicated to educating black children from kindergarten through to college graduation. What tips would you give to a bride-to-be on choosing the right wedding dress? I’m always interested in meeting the individual needs of my clients; most of all my brides. So we begin by bringing together all their ideal elements and I create a composite sketch of everything beautiful they want to reflect in their wedding adornment. I always advise them to keep it authentic. That’s my top tip for brides-to-be. What kind of trends have there been in wedding dresses over the past 20 years? I think the bridal gown market; at least insofar as ready-to-wear bridal wear, has played it safe over the past two decades. Little has changed in terms of what constitutes a ‘traditional’ bridal gown silhouette in the Eurocentric/Western context of things. But what we offer at Gisella Boutique is a broader cultural alternative. Many brides-tobe come to us specifically seeking to embody something ideologically different. We’ve designed for brides who’ve wanted to affirm a range of cultural aesthetics beyond the

realm of the typical white wedding gown. How do you handle ‘bridezillas’? Fortunately, we haven’t had too much trouble with the whole bridezilla syndrome. I’m big on making my brides feel at ease and try to diminish some of that anxiety from the stress associated with finding that ‘perfect’ bridal gown. Perfection after all is a matter of subjectivity. I always emphasise that the entire process should ideally be as stress-free and enjoyable as possible which is contrary to what most bridezilla reality TV shows would have you think. Where in London do you think would be the most romantic place for someone to propose? There are some picturesque spots along the waterfront at The Southbank. But south of the river, I think an intimate location like the exotic flower gardens at Horniman Museum would also be a beautiful spot for a proposal in the sunshine.

The Wedding Issue

What song would you choose for your first wedding dance with your hubby? I’m in awe of Giving You The Best That I Got by Anita Baker. The lyrics are so fittingly supreme. But The Wedding Song by Frank McComb comes a close second to capturing what I’d hope to be feeling at that moment. to the Wombell cookbook collection has been Lorraine Pascale’s Baking Made Easy. It’s a joy. I bought it simply to review it for my blog, Black Book News, rather than with any inclination to do masses of baking. The thing that makes this book a prize keeper is that it includes a series of recipes that are savoury. So yes, it is a traditional baking book that includes breads, pizzas, and lots of beautiful cakes, but the dishes that you are most likely to do regularly are the savoury ones. Mr chose the first dish to cook; and I cooked it. So we both recommend the Garlic, Sherry and Mussels recipe. May Polling day for local elections On Thursday May 5th there are local elections in many parts of the UK. In Wales and Northern Ireland there are also elections for the devolved assemblies and in Scotland there are Parliamentary elections. However, there is one vote that everyone

will have throughout the UK – a vote in the AV referendum. The referendum is to decide the voting system we use to elect our Westminster MPs. The choice in the referendum will be between what we already use First Past the Post, where the winner is always the person with the most votes even if they get only 30 per cent of votes from the electorate. Or a vote for change to the system-AV. AV ensures that the winner has 50 per cent of the votes from the electorate and is what they use in Simon Cowell’s X Factor. It will be the single most important vote since 1975 referendum on joining the European Economic Community, also known as the ‘Common Market’. Info: www.obv.org.uk

Lime book review: Baking Made Easy, Lorraine Pascale Lime rating: Words: Tricia Wombell After the lovely wedding comes the marathon of married life. One secret of a happy married life, I believe, is to take it in turns to cook. Sharing food together and with family and friends is easily one of the best things in life. Mr and I enjoy our food very much. He’s learnt everything he knows of the culinary arts from me and in rare instances – presentation in particular – he’s overtaken me. Taste and flavour are the things I strive for, since you are going to eat it however it looks. Just like Jack Sprat and his Mrs we keep the platter clean. The latest addition

Many young black people in the 1980s were misdiagnosed and sectioned in institutions while overdosed with drugs. Picking or washing rice was seen as mentally deficient. May – 18 Jun Nnenna Okore: Metamorphoses Artist Nnenna Okore returns to October Gallery, London for her second solo exhibition. Following the success of her London debut solo show Ulukububa: Infinite Flow in 2008, Okore continues to employ ordinary media like magazine and newspaper to highlight consumerism and excessive wastefulness in today’s society. Along with the continued exploration of these themes in her work, Okore is also inspired by the concept of growth and metamorphosis. ‘I am fascinated and often surprised by material transformations that result from amassment, layering and multiplicity of smaller parts and units,’ says Okore. Alluding to commonplace materials such as fabric, Nnenna converts everyday detritus into biomorphic forms that reference organic movements and fluid undulation of expanding surfaces. til 18 May The New Spirit of Oshogbo Art exhibition by Rahmon Olugunna‫‏‬

Rahmon Olugunna has been referred to as the heir apparent to the great Oshogbo art tradition. He is a third generation Oshogbo artist, which takes its name from the ancient Yoruba town of Oshogbo – renowned as a cradle of Yoruba culture and spirituality. His

work confidently evokes the Oshogbo artistic movement, but boldly pushes the boundaries into refreshing new directions. Rahmon’s striking abstractions give new meaning to figurative art and are often set in a mosaic of striking colours and patterns. He evolved his style under the tutelage of a number of Oshogbo masters including Rufus Ogundele and Muraina Oyelami and has now emerged as an artist with his own distinctive voice. He has exhibited in Lagos, Abuja, New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Sante Fe and his work features in the permanent collections of the Richard Singletary Gallery in Virginia. til 15 May Bob Marley and the Golden Age of Reggae An exhibition of photographs by celebrated photographer Kim Gottlieb-Walker. This exhibition is a stunning visual record of the ‘golden age of reggae’ to mark the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley’s death this May. During 1975 and 1976, renowned underground photo-journalist Kim Gottlieb-Walker and her husband, head of publicity at Island Records Jeff Walker, documented what is now widely recognised as the Golden Age of reggae. Over two years of historic trips to Jamaica and exclusive meetings in Los Angeles, Kim took iconic photographs of the artists who would go on to define an era and captivate

a generation. Proud Galleries has worked with Kim Gottlieb-Walker to create an exhibition of candid and intimate photographs of the artists and producers who brought the reggae sound to the international stage, including Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Toots Hibbert, Burning Spear, Lee “Scratch” Perry and, of course, Bob Marley. This exhibition includes never-beforeseen photographs and is a stunning photographic record of one of the most exciting moments in recent musical history, with a warmth and intimacy born out of the respect between Kim Gottlieb-Walker and the artist. LAUGH OUT LOUDER! W

ANGER MANAGEMENT REALLY WORKS

hen you occasionally have a really bad day, and you just need to take it out on someone, don’t take it out on someone you know, take it out on someone you don’t know, but you know deserves it... I was sitting at my desk when I remembered a phone call I’d forgotten to make. I found the number and dialed it. A man answered, saying ‘Hello.’ I politely said, ‘This is Chris. Could I please speak with Robyn Carter?’ Suddenly a manic voice yelled out in my ear: ‘Get the right f***ing number!’ And the phone was slammed down on me. I couldn’t believe that anyone could be so rude. When I tracked down Robyn’s correct number to call her, I found that I had accidentally transposed the last two digits. After hanging up with her, I decided to call the ‘wrong’ number again. When the same guy answered the phone, I yelled ‘You’re an

46 LIME MAGAZINE 2011

asshole!’ And hung up. I wrote his number down with the word ‘asshole’ next to it, And put it in my desk drawer. Every couple of weeks, when I was paying bills or had a really bad day, I’d call him up and yell, ‘You’re an asshole!’ It always cheered me up. When Caller ID was introduced, I thought my therapeutic ‘asshole’ calling would have to stop. So, I called his number and said, ‘Hi, this is John Smith from the telephone company. I’m calling to see if you’re familiar with our Caller ID Programme?’ He yelled ‘NO!’ And slammed down the phone. I quickly called him back and said, ‘That’s because you’re an asshole!’ And hung up. One day I was at the store, getting ready to pull into a parking spot. Some guy in a black BMW cut me off and pulled into the spot I had patiently waited for. I hit the horn and yelled that I’d been waiting for that spot, but the idiot ignored me. I noticed a ‘For Sale’ sign in his back window, so I wrote down his number. A couple of days later, right after calling the first asshole (I had his number on speed dial). I thought that I’d better call the BMW asshole, too. I said, ‘Is this the man with the black BMW for sale?’ He said, ‘Yes, it is.’ I then asked, ‘Can you tell me where I can see it?’ He said, ‘Yes, I live at 34 Oaktree Blvd. , in Fairfax It’s a yellow ranch style house

And the car’s parked right out in front.’ I asked, ‘What’s your name?’ He said, ‘My name is Don Hansen.’ I asked, ‘When’s a good time to catch you, Don?’ He said, ‘I’m home every evening after five.’ I said, ‘Listen, Don, can I tell you something?’ He said, ‘Yes? I said, ‘Don, you’re an asshole!’ Then I hung up, and added his number to my speed dial, too. Now, when I had a problem, I had two assholes to call. Then I came up with an idea... I called asshole #1. He said, ‘Hello’ I said, ‘You’re an asshole!’ (But I didn’t hang up.) He asked, ‘Are you still there?’ I said, ‘Yeah!’ He screamed, ‘Stop calling me’ I said, ‘Make me.’ He asked, ‘Who are you?’ I said, ‘My name is Don Hansen.’ He said, ‘Yeah? Where do you live?’ I said, ‘Asshole, I live at 34 Oaktree Blvd., in Fairfax, a yellow ranch style home and I have a black Beamer parked in front.’ He said, ‘I’m coming over right now, Don. And you had better start saying your prayers.’ I said, ‘Yeah, like I’m really scared, asshole,’ and hung up. Then I called Asshole #2. He said, ‘Hello?’ I said, ‘Hello, asshole,’ He yelled, ‘If I ever find out who you are...’ I said, ‘You’ll what?’ He exclaimed, ‘I’ll kick your ass’ I answered, ‘Well, asshole, here’s your chance. I’m coming over right now.’ Then I hung up and immediately called the police, saying that I was on my way over to 34 Oaktree Blvd, in Fairfax, to kill my gay lover. Then I called Channel 7 News about the gang war going down in Oaktree Blvd in Fairfax. I quickly got into my car and headed over to Fairfax. I got there just in time to watch two assholes beating the crap out of each other in front of six cop cars, an overhead news helicopter and surrounded by a news crew. NOW I feel much better. Anger management really does work.
