August Africa Unplugged 27 This August bank holiday

Safety/Security Tips for travelling abroad: 1.

Attire: Try to blend in and avoid standing out as a tourist. The way one is dressed will only draw attention from petty thieves and con-artists. Try to avoid exposing expensive jewellery, money bags and camera’s. This is a sure sign of vulnerability and makes you a clear target for onlookers. Valuables: Identify a safe place for your valuables on arrival. Only take as much money as you need for the day/night and don’t expose any valuable jewellery or equipment should you need to take this with you. Back up your funds: You never know who might be watching you, so make sure to always use ATM’s during bank hours inside a building rather than openly in the street. A reserve of money is essential, so make sure to split your funds be it in a sock, different pocket or bag so you always have a back-up plan should the situation arise. Always separate your cards from your cash so you always

have a payment method of some type. Be Confident: Don’t ever be embarrassed to ask for help. If you think you are being followed, duck into a nearby shop or restaurant and ask for help. Don’t let yourself fall into a vulnerable position and stay in a crowded area if you are ever in doubt. Personal Safety Device: Consider carrying a safety device for any situations that arise for which you feel threatened. Not only will it build your confidence knowing that you have the device, but a simple sound alarm could be enough to distract a threatening situation. Insure yourself: As a first priority, get some travel insurance. Whether to look after you medical expenses or protect your valuables – insurance is a must, regardless of how long for. Try to be sensible: We all know a holiday is there to help us explore the unknown, and find our inner ‘wild sides’ but we must remember to put on

our sensible hats amongst the unknown and excitable. Don’t be invisible and ignore the warning signs, if it seems to good to be true, the likelihood is, it is! If locals/friends/ hoteliers/guidebooks have wanted you not to go to particular neighbourhood, carry certain belongings and accept particular gifts/ advances, there is bound to be a reason. Vulnerability and Personal Details: Con-artists and petty thieves are always on the lookout for opportunities so if you are planning on sharing your personal details, think twice. Check websites before you buy making sure to look out for signature logo’s such as the ‘Secure Visa’ sign. Try to avoid using your cards in internet cafe’s as scam devices and Trojans can easily pick up your details and use them to ill effect. Familiarise yourself with your surroundings: While in a foreign country, you are subject to its laws and customs. Always research

This will make sure you are not only kept safe from the arm of the law, but you are far more wise to your surroundings appearing less vulnerable to the preying con-artists and thieves. . Scan your important documents: If you haven’t followed tips 1 – 9, then unfortunately you might have lost all the important pieces of paper certifying you flights, itinerary, contact details and worse, your passport. Therefore, in preparation to your departure, make sure to scan and share these documents with a close friend/family member back home so they can have them on hand to send you to via. unexpected heat wave last month; there is no doubt that most of you have been enjoying the sunshine outdoors entertaining. So why not try a cheesy seeded loaf, Italian chorizo sausage with sundried tomatoes and olives in your bread or a classic fruit loaf. Add this to some of your garden party favourites! You will need: • 500g strong bread flour • 1 sachet dried yeast • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp sugar • 250ml warm water

Additional ingredients: • Sun dried tomatoes • Chorizo sausage • Herbs- oregano, chives, parsley, rosemary • Cheese- mozzarella, cheddar, parmesan • Olives • Dried mixed fruit First heat the oven to 200°C. Next you will need to grease a baking sheet or loaf tin- depending on what type of bread you are going to make. Then gradually add the

water to form a non-sticky dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for around 10 minutes- this well help to make the bread smooth and soft. Shape the dough as required and then place it onto the baking try or into the loaf tin. You should now cover this with a damp tea towel and prove for around 30-45 minutes. The bread should double in size. Glace and sprinkle with seeds for a seeded loaf, and place it into the oven for 10-15 minutes for a small loaf or 20-25 minutes fir a large loaf. You are looking for a golden brown loaf which should sound hollow when you tap it on the bottom, once you notice this ready!

DESIGN • CULTURE • FASHION showcases the influence of Pop culture on several design mediums from 1955 to 1976, including record covers and packaging by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton, and the work of fashion designers like Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, John Stephen and Betsey Johnson, design director of the leading New York boutique of the era. Pop graphics will be explored, from the British psychedelic artwork of Hapshash and the Coloured Coat, and the posters of the American West Coast rock venues in San Francisco, to the work of Martin Sharp for underground magazine OZ. The influence of Heinz Eidelmann’s design for the Beatles film Yellow Submarine on late 1960s design will be touched on, as well as the work of ‘Mr Freedom’ fashion designers Pamla Motown and Jim O’Connor, and the early 1970s work of fashion and textile designer Miss Mouse, aka Rae SpenceCullen.

Being a Vintage lover myself, I was very intrigued to see what the kilo sale was all about. On entry, my friend & I were welcomed at the venue, where we paid £1, had our hands stamped & were offered a purple plastic bag! We were told there were two rooms to visit, one for clothes and the other for jewellery. Walking past a long queue I spotted people with huge amounts of items in their hands, a good sign! And at the end of the queue there were three weighs to weigh your items; £15 per kilo.

begin? I was 17 and bored of doing music and art so I hopped on my mum’s sewing machine and found it really fun. From there I went on to do my degree at London College of Fashion. Since creating the brand Emile, what challenges have you faced along the way? Running your own business sometimes forces your morals to be tested and fortunately I’ve come out on the other side positive. The average day for me is about 12 hours of work; sometimes I go two days without sleep to ensure that I meet deadlines.

Style is one of those things that is not meant to be dictated to you, it is subjective meaning that someone’s faux pas is another person’s fashion statement. Who is your style icon? I love Viktor and Rolf, since my early days they have always inspired me with their edgy designs and sharp shapes. Their ideas are like something from a dream as they sometimes defy the laws of gravity. What’s one of the hardest things about working in fashion?

Aside from the long hours one of the hardest things is not compromising your creativity just to make money. As a business owner I have to keep my eye on my balance sheet whilst ensuring that I am not watering down my creativity. What advice would you give to someone who wants to break into the fashion industry? I advise them to not take no for an answer. Ruth Bircham Rof the boldest and

WORDS: Adelaide Damoah

uth Bircham is one

bravest artists I have ever come across, working passionately and with a determined spirit, in the face of adversity. Born in 1966 in Stoke-on-Trent, Bircham says that she has been painting since before she could even talk. She used painting and drawing to express herself as a child as she did not speak until she was five. Bircham would draw small pictures to communicate what she wanted to her mother.

With a BA (Hon) in Fine Art and Media under her belt, Bircham cites the Renaissance, Corporeality, Impressionism and Abstract Realism as her influences. I say bold and brave because her latest work confronts sex and sexuality in a way that is so real, so in your face, that it actually takes your breath away. Some could not be posted here for that reason! Please go to her website. I spent an hour talking to her about her personal thoughts on success in the art world.

How would you describe your work? Well my latest work could be described as... Erotic. Everyone can relate to sexuality. Sexual aesthetics... I am trying to create an art movement called Eroticism. I am bringing international artists from countries including the USA, certain countries in Africa, Indonesia, the Philippines, Italy and Spain together to collaborate and tour on a large scale. The group is called Forbidden Fruit. There are a lot of countries that see sex as a taboo subject. I am trying to break the boundaries of the perceptions that some people have about sex. But this work should be seen as art and not as pornographic. Are you now a professional artist? Is art all that you do or are you doing other things to support your work?

Lusty big lips

People have called me a professional and I am not sure why that is. I think it is because I don’t hide. I face everything. I am a confrontational artist. I have problems with both of my legs – with bad arthritis in my knees and both hips so I do not do any other work, just painting. Do you regularly sell work at your shows? Because I love my work so much, I set the price very high so that very few people can afford it! I don’t make any money from my shows. What would your ultimate dream be for your work? My ultimate dream is to get this art movement with the artists off the ground. I want them to realise that being bold, being expressive and loud in your work is the best

AD: You are definitely that! Would you like to make money from your art? I would love to! I would love to be able to live comfortably from my art and to help others to do the same. I do have a potential buyer in Berlin and a sponsor in Switzerland who helps me in many ways, including circulating my work to his contacts around the world. The problem is that because of the financial crisis, few people are willing to buy right now. What would be your personal definition of success in the art world? To be in a position where you are making art which is not restricted by the opinions of others. To know your market, and to know what you are producing and why, and what it is doing for the people that experience it. Art is not about money and material things. It has come to be about that. Art is about expression. When others view it, they then make up their minds as to what the work is saying to them. Art is about what the artist puts in and what the audience takes out. If it sells, that is good, but if it does not, that is still good because it means that it is there for others to see and get something from over and over again. So for you, success is not just about money, it is about knowing yourself, being true to yourself, creating artwork which is unique to you without having people impose their ideas about what they

way forward. They should not allow other people to restrict them or tell them what to paint. My aim is to motivate artists to create art in the way that they want to create it. I would not say that I am professional or anything. I would just say that I am very determined.

that you can’t do it. Keep telling yourself that you can and you will and you will get there.

think you should be doing? Yes. Being real, keeping it real. I talk to many people who tell me about their experiences in life. I build an image in my mind and go away and paint it. When they look at the work, they are surprised and realise that I have painted what they were talking about. It is not just questioning, it is answering as well. For example, as a black woman, I like to let people know through my work

that yes, black people do have a history, but do not let that history dictate your future. Your hands may once have been in chains, but do not let your mind still be in chains. What advice would you give to any young people looking to make their first footsteps into the art world? Persistence, determination and self motivation. Keep on pushing forward and don’t let anyone tell you

Do you have any exhibitions where people can see your work this year? I have been invited to submit work to Art Erotica in Cork Street, London. I have also been invited to do a collaborative project in Nigeria. I am working on getting that together now. I have 250 artists in my Erotica art movement group so far (Forbidden Fruits). I am looking for others to join in because for me it is about supporting each other as artists. I put the group together myself with Titus Agbara, Edward Ofosu, Shallman Quarshie and others. They and many others have given me much encouragement. The first show was last November in London. We are hoping to do another one this year. Watch this space. You have an extensive association in performing arts, producing and directing have you always had passion for a career in theatre? For me – yes I suppose I have. It started back at school; I was very lucky to have a fantastic drama teacher; who is still my friend and mentor. It’s a bit of a cliché, as drama has been a saviour since then. I knew I felt comfortable. One of your theatre credits includes working as associate director on Avenue Q, that must have been quite an experience; Tell us more. It was the most fantastic time; it was a long process because it came off Broadway, and so I worked with the first original cast for the West End. It was a long process doing auditions and recalls, puppet workshops; where actors had to learn how to work with puppets, as none of them had done it before. I worked with a great guy who had worked with Disney. It was the first big show I was associate director for. I looked after the show once the American team had gone. It was a lovely cast; everyday was different, when 18 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

you have a great script and great songs it. It was a great experience for me, a learning experience. What is one of the hardest things about working in theatre? I suppose if I’m really honest the thing about theatre, is that the shows are in the evening,

directing/ rehearsing all day. It can take up your hours, so it falls into your personal life. Lots of my friends are part of what I do. There are Pros

and cons, but you do it because you love it. I’m lucky I’m doing a job that I really love, so I’m blessed. What’s one thing you know now about working in theatre that you wish you knew when you first

You were awarded with a Carlton Multicultural Achievement Award for performing arts, how does it feel? I was very taken back actually because you do what you do and of course you hope they have a great show. When People outside the biz see that, it boosts you and also you see people get it. I was honoured. Tell us something we don’t know about you. I love sci-fi, I love my Underworld and the vampire thing, the Twiglight thing. I can’t wait for Prometheus to come out.

embarked on your career? I suppose it’s such an education for me, you’re always learning. I don’t think I would have known anything before. You’ve got to give it one hundred percent. Always learning skills things you learn along the way. You are co-creator of Spoke-Lab with Roger Robinson; tell us what Spoke –Lab all about? Spoke lab started out of spoke fest, back in 2006, which was a festival of

spoken word. Roger Robinson I’d known from previous work, he is a performer, poet, writer and musician. He’s a great mentor and teacher. The festival was for two weeks, with a slam championship at the end for unknown spoken word artists. I created one show with a group of the guys, who were fantastic artists and still are. We were very interested in mixing theatre and spoken word. In 2006/07, we looked at how do we could take this further, we came up with Spoke-Lab, it was to be a space, a lab, a safe secure and creative place for artists to question, play, workshop ideas and learn new skills.

I’m lucky I’m doing a job that I really love, so I’m blessed

Recently you have been working on ‘The Harder They Come’, out this month at Stratford East. How are the preparations going? This time we are doing a concert version, it’s stripped back, not the full version. We only had a week to rehearse; its part of the Open Stage initiative about allowing the audience and community to choose what they want to see on stage. We were not able to do big productions but we did concerts. The Harder They Come, has rhythm, flow and energy, and brings culture onto the main stage. We are lucky that we were able to do that, Kerry Michael co directs. You must have a busy year ahead of you, what else are you working on? We don’t start Hard until the end of the month. It’s been a busy year so far, we are right in the middle of the Olympics; a lot of the countries will take over a building, we going to have Nigeria with us. So it will be Nigeria house, this will help promote cultural events, in music, fashion, and we will create a couple of programs. Legacy is really important to us, 30

Nigeria House will give £3,000 to 30 emerging 18-35 year old artists from the UK and Nigeria. That is exciting. I have Panto this year, so look forward to that, I’ve got Jack and the Beanstalk, with a new writer called Paul Sirett, he wrote The Big Life and he helped on the show Come Dancing. It’s his first Panto. We have original music and songs; we take the story with a bit of a twist.

THEATRE

Hopefully we can bring that in again.

When you’re not working what are some of your favourite things to do? You know what I sound so boring, I catch up with my friends and family, I’ve got lots of nieces and God-children, my mum is my role model she is just amazing. They root me back down again. And Sleep [laughs].

REMARKABLE MEN

Who in the theatre industry do you think is a remarkable male? It hard for me, I think that our black actors work hard. They have to work twice as hard, actors by right have to work hard. And for male actors like Idris Elba, who have done their time here and weren’t getting the stuff they need and have to go to the States to work their socks off there and then they come back here and then it’s like “Hi, you can do your thing now.” They are all remarkable. The Adrian Lester’s, men from back in the day like Victor Romero Evans and Eddie Nestor, there’s a whole generation of guys; they are out there and we know, but not everyone knows about them. June’s new Natty - Out of Fire Mixtape

Natty dropped his debut album Man Like I in 2009 and on that release alone it seemed that he may be an artist to keep a close eye on but before we could start to really absorb this reggae influenced singer, songwriter and producer, he disappeared. Music politricks (see the interview with him in this issue) plagued him but 2012 he returns with a mix-tape the teaser to a subsequent album as yet un-named. The teaser does exactly that and guides us through a musical journey that seems to have no boundaries from reggae, bass music, dub, house it meanders like water down a window-completely free. There is a danger that there can be too much of a mix but the mix-tape seems to get it just right-cannot wait for the album. Out now Cold Play feat Rihanna Princess of China Cold drop another single from that album with the rather self-indulgent, we have made it so we can come up with a made up word for an album (which it is) and it will still sell name-Mylo Xyloto (2011) – despite the name, the album

is good and indeed it has sold massive units. There is a good reason as exemplified with Princess of China-not necessarily the best track off the album but it works. Delicate sonic touches that delve into the oriental are over laid but the emotive vocals of Chris Martin and Rihanna who ditches her sex vixen vocals and drops a powerful although not over cooked vocal. Out 4th June Emeli Sande - My Kind of Love The Scottish songstress who was only a year away from qualifying as a doctor returns with another single off that platinum selling album Our Version of Events (2011). My Kind of Love does exactly what millions have grown to love about this lady whose vocal transmits anguish with suitable ease. Will it be another smash for Emeli? Of course. Out 11th June Kassidy-One Man Army One Man Army is the title track from their second album released on the 30th April from the young Scottish band. It’s an inspirational track asking all of us to stand up tall and don’t stand “against the wall”. They

evidently do that type of track well; Waking up Sideways off their last album Hope St (2011) was well received. Now signed to Vertigo part of the Mercury label the signs are good as they continue to bring their alternative rock to new and old fans. Out 18th June

It’s undoubtedly due heavy rotation on the airwaves because it features two massive names with Taoi and Pitbull who should really be called Border Collie since his early days as a hard core rapper are long gone, replaced by a rapper who looks like he goes for a regular manicure, pedicure followed by very, very, very cold water, drunk in one go because he is that hard-hopefully this track goes away! Out 25th June titled ‘Punch In the Face’ remix, as well as a stripped back and pitched down wobbly rework from Bad Osiris & Kee and remixes by Harry Wolfman and Philly & Jazz Influenced by Garage, Grime, House and Hip Hop with a love for chopped samples and subtle basslines, brothers Phaze One and Blacksta as Star One have collaborated with the likes of Toddla T who singled the duo out ‘as one of the most exciting producers to emerge in 2011.’ Remixing for artists as diverse as Jamie Woon and BBC1’s much-loved Rastamouse, Star One are already turning the right heads in a very short space of time and with their debut release this May, 2012 is proving to be no different. Karl Hinds

MUSIC

The Don is bringing his Grammar back! Words: Vernia Mengot

Kknown as one of the arl Hinds is well

pioneers of the UK rap scene along with being a producer and label owner he returns with his brand new mix-tape Black Timing. Having worked with some of the biggest names known to UK hiphop; Hinds took a leave of absence from the limelight and is back with a mixtape that brings freshly produced beats and bars galore.

In this exclusive interview we talk about the ugly side of the music business, working with Estelle and his newly produced powerful bars. So tell us a bit about your forth coming mix tape Black-timing? It’s basically a mix tape to kind of reintroduce myself back into the game. There are eight cuts produced by myself, its reintroducing top rhyming, word play and hard spitting. Letting people hear me, music they would consider of today. You’ve been away from the rap scene for a little while now, why the absence? There is a whole leap of reasons. Have Patience (2004), my 1st album sold in a short space of time, within in a month. So it wasn’t to do with lack of success. I was getting frustrated with people in the industry. I didn’t really know them, people where approaching me as if I should beg them, and 24 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

worship the ground they walk on. I was frustrated with my distributors. I had to stop until I can release music where I can cut these people out. If they want to do business they can, I don’t have to cross their paths. Music was being heavily controlled. They had agendas and I didn’t want to be susceptible to someone’s agenda. Until I could figure a way to go around the bull****, by the time I was settled it had been eight years. How did Ill Flavour Records come about? When I was in school, I started Jungle Assassin records. The whole purpose was to raise money to start releasing hip hop. It took me until I was about 22/23 to get the money together to release the hip hop record. My intention was to release hip hop tracks, I had about 23 jungle tracks but people didn’t know it was me. So what I was trying to do is to keep the two labels going concurrently. I am a music lover, I became a lot more successful as a UK rapper, producer; doing touring, videos and albums. I have always intended in relaunching the label, maybe next year. You had done

some work with Estelle in the past; tell us a bit about that Ok the first thing I’ve got to clear up is that I never signed her. Estelle approached me about releasing her first single. She featured on my first album; from there we kept

working on projects and were quite often in the studio at the

We got the album, from putting that out, we had the rights to it in the UK, so people just assumed she was signed to me. It was obvious the direction she was going in, I could see. I was getting frustrated; everyone was comfortable with same type of music. Hip hop evolves, Estelle had figured out how she was going to escape that sort of

box. She got signed with two other female rappers. I knew them both, they both featured on my two albums. When they got the deal; Estelle put me forward to work as one of the producers. I was constantly in Estelle’s business. She said to me “Something big is going to happen, you need to get your stuff together.” But I couldn’t move quick enough and the rest is history. Estelle, I call her superstar. I never called her by her name. Who in the music scene could you see yourself collaborating with? Well, an artist Black the Ripper, a UK rapper. There’s a ton of them, another artist, Dot RottenI’m feeling his stuff and would love to work with him. A few artists have been bought to my attention. There are many of them. I wouldn’t mind doing something with Stylo G. Giggs – I’d love to do a track with Giggs. Another rapper called, English Frank and Mic Righteous. I’d work with artists in America and Jamaica. The UK scene is so potent, whereas before probably US artists would come to mind first.

People like us frustrate the industry; it makes no sense to me The greats like Nas, Jay, Beyonce and Teedra Moses. It’s unbelievable, people used to laugh hard and tell me there was no money in it. When I released ‘Don Grammer’, trying to get it on radio- It couldn’t get airplay for being pro British. To me it seems like the other day. My first album is ten years old this year. My friend who has the

same surname as me, was telling me about a time at work where he was talking to a guy at work who must have been about 21, he asked if my friend had heard of someone called Karl Hinds, and my friend said “yeah that’s my friend” and he said “I grew up listening to him.” I never imagined people talking about me or my music in that way – I’ve only just started. What are your opinions of musical talent shows like the Xfactor and The Voice? My honest opinion is that Simon Cowell has a hold on that whole industry and that he is just milking it. People that win have talent, more recently that when it first started. What people forget is that all that format does is put on camera everything that happens off camera. It’s new and it’s frustrating people. If that’s the route they want to go in it’s up to them. Music is competitive, if artists want to be told what to do, obviously being famous and making music, it confuses the consumer. I had a clear understanding of music and fame as I’ve grown up. Consumers can’t tell the difference, everything is merging. What does music mean to you? Music is my sanity, it’s my life, I’ve only ever had one job outside of music, that was when I went broke, and I was a connexions advisor for one year, in my late twenties. Music has been my focus since school. Without it, I think I would be the worst person in history. I can’t even put it in to words. It’s that serious. What advice would you give to someone trying to break into the music scene? That’s always been my situation; you’ve got to be real determined and really thick skinned. People like us frustrate the industry;

it makes no sense to me. You’ve got to be realistic, I think the kids nowadays, they see music as a hustle, and they want to make money. That’s why people complain about the quality. That’s not a good idea, if you want to get into music you have to find a spiritual or emotional connection. First and foremost you have to find that connection first. Get yourself out there. I would refrain from sitting at home on the computer, and thinking you are going to get out there. Doing it on your own is very isolating. You need help to get through when you’re not the flavour of the month, try and set up a little team.

MUSIC

same time. I went on tour in Germany, supporting an act Johnny rewind, he was looking to put out record in England, Estelle was the only vocalist on that track, I saw the commercial value with Estelle back then.

What keeps you grounded? I pay for everything; I’ve got no hype to believe in any success that happens in the future- that pretty much keeps me grounded. It can leave you broke, everyone else can think you’re a star when you are really struggling trying to make ends meet. I’m not trying to be famous.

REMARKABLE MEN

Who would you say is one of the biggest male artists in the music industry? Across the board? Drake but I don’t think he is the biggest, Rick Ross, Chris brown and funny enough Tinie Tempah. It’s an impossible question to answer. TNatty was a welcome

MUSIC

one for me. Back in 2009 I interviewed Natty after he dropped his debut album Man Like I (2009). Natty was absolutely buzzing with enthusiasm and he spoke keenly of his next album which at the time was near completion. I even remember seeing his album Man Like I in HMV and it was in their top forty chart-not bad for a debut.

Natty: finding freedom

Natty talks about getting away from music politricks

It was his UK, reggae tinged music that was infectious in many respects and brought Natty a keen following that seemed to suggest that Natty was soon to be inundating the UK charts but nothing followed-it was like a stick of dynamite had been lit but the expected ‘kaboom’ just never happened. Seeing Natty in Soho for the interview not much had changed outwardly, apart from those dreads which had evidently growing much thicker and longer but Natty’s four year absence was for a reason and pointed to a change that occurred within him. “Real talk the industry 26 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

is full of some real off key little demons” states Natty who was in a forthright and refreshingly honest mood, “even the management and the label were off- I am on the same label that I was on before and all that stuff that happened before has been squashed now. The thing is back then we were doing a lot of touring and what happened on the first album was politricks that

went down and I did not like that.” He adds when I check if it is ok to print his views, “nah man this is what happened so if they don’t like what I say then that is cool”. “I decided to take a bit of time out due to all that was happening and go travelling around Africa and think about family life and my life generally- the funny thing is I had an

album all ready to go. I had in fact written another album as well on top of that- even two years ago when the other album would have come I tried to play ball with the label and the manger by writing with other people but it was difficult because I did not know these people.” He adds, “Look” catching my eye straight on, “I tried to work with it and I wrote with people on songs that

I write music from the heart so how are you going to write with me if you do not know my heart? They wanted me to write with people because maybe they had a hit with Duffy “A lot of people do not know that I used to make bass music that was just really bass heavy that is what I did so Man Like I was politricks as well because it did not come out the way I fully wanted because it was a little bass light compared to what I actually made.”

could have been hits but I was not about to release an album when I did not feel comfortable-essentially in my contract it is down to me whether I want to release something and so I dug my feet in!”

to stress that his music is about “longevity” and despite the fact that a label may see Natty as an irritating thorn in the side his wish to bring quality is something that you cannot help but admire.

Evidently Natty could be seen as a difficult artist but it is significant to see that there is a passion in his character and a passion for his music. Natty is keen

“When I release an album I want it to be released right. Man Like I touched people soul because the songs mean something. I think one of the reasons

that I can come back after four years and do a tour which sells out is due to my first album which has longevity.” He says with intense passion. His mixtape which is evidently an album in many respects being filled with all original tracks sonically represents the new found freedom that Natty appears to be enjoying with his label.

The Out Of Fire mix-tape is definitely a lot of what his first album brought but there is an infinitely edgier, bass happy sound with smidgens of the African influences permeating tracks mixed with the elements of the UK dance element with a collabo from the Ragga Twins (veterans form the jungle drum n bass scene) and of course reggae-Alarm Bells feat Sam Frank is a dub-tastic reggae banger that will light up dance halls and indeed his album promises to follow suit. So why did this soul searching make you realise that music was your real calling? I could not think of anything else that I would rather do. I just really felt my purpose in life was to give value to people through music- it was just this gift that I was given.

Was your up-bringing very musically orientated? I grew up in a place called Jos that was like this musical place where people would hone their skills to be really great rather than any commercial gain. with a number of sporting events beginning as well the cinema might be the best place to escape to. First up is the heavily promoted Ridley Scott scifi adventure Prometheus. We’ve seen so many clips, teasers and previews that we can’t wait to see the film itself now. In fact the worry is that we might have seen too much at this point, but Ridley Scott is a master craftsman and there is every chance that this will deliver the goods.

Prometheus

There is an all-star cast for this one which includes the likes of Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron and our very own Idris Elba. A filmmaker on the other end of the experience spectrum is Plan B. His film Ill Manors will be an interesting watch, and looks to find an audience just like ‘Adulthood’ and ‘Kidulthood’ before it. If you’re looking for a laugh then perhaps the Spanish language Will Ferrel film Casa De Mi Padre will do the trick. With the final ‘Twilight’ film scheduled for release later this year, it’s time for the stars to start branching out. We’ve seen K-Stew in ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ and now it’s time for her other half to go solo with the controversial Cosmopolis. It’s an odd book, we’ve read it, and will make for a big leap for R-Patz. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is also scheduled

for adaptation in June. The book is a blend of fact and fiction with the slave trade playing an important part in the plot. Expect Anthony Mackie to have a big role in the action, which is directed by the man behind ‘Wanted’. Rock of Ages marks the return of Tom Cruise. He cameos as an ageing rocker in the movie based on the popular stage production. Get your 80’s hair and rock anthems ready... this is a sing-along fest. We’re not sure you’ll be singing along to Joyful Noise, which stars Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton

though. It’s a musical and it’s not got the best of reviews from the across the Atlantic.

Megan Fox in what we hope is something better than her last few films. ‘Jonah Hex’ any one?

The US box-office has been dominated by ‘The Avengers’, but another huge success has been the low budget Think like a Man. Michael Ealy stars opposite Meagan Good, Tajira P Henson and Regina Hall for ‘Fantastic Four’ director Tim Story.

If you are looking for something different, then Killer Joe is probably the anti-blockbuster to go for. It’s violent, crude and unabashed... and one thing is for sure... you’ll never look at fried chicken in the same way again.

We’ve got high hopes for Friends with Kids. As well as the prospect of seeing ‘Bridesmaids’ stars John Hamm and Kristen Wiig team up on screen again, there is also the sizzling

him recently he had just finished filming his part in a major Hollywood Blockbuster, and was in London to talk about his upcoming June releases. First up is the sports themed ‘Fast Girls’, and then the sci-fi thriller ‘Storage 24’.

We started off by asking him what it was like working on two films at the same time. That’s the world of distribution companies doing their thing. They’ve got their strategy to work out the best release dates, and it just happens to be a bit close this time. Do you think it helps having a high profile at certain times to get your films noticed? I don’t know. It probably helps, but it’s not ideal. Not everyone has got that much money and they might have to end up picking one or the other. I’d love them to see both. Let’s talk about ‘Storage 24’, which is actually based on an original idea by yourself as well. How did you come up with it? My wife had to go to a number of storage facilities for her work. I’d go with her and would end up waiting in various corridors, sometime with our baby, and i’d be looking around thinking ‘this is quite freaky’. At first I thought about having a serial killer who was picking off a group of people whilst trying to escape the law. One day I woke up and thought 30 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

With my new films it’s about trying to British films that are successful, and commercial, and entertaining. When you go to the cinema these days you are spending a lot of money. If I’m paying that, it better be good and that’s what I’m trying to do.

SCREEN

it, it was out of sequence it had girls in the lead. But Universal Studios loved it.

And how are your films doing over in America?

‘Alien!’. That was the film I wanted to see. For me as a big sci-fi head and someone who is trying to break away from people putting you into a box of what you do, that’s where the idea came from. British sci-fi is rare in itself. Were you worried about trying to get this made here? No. This film is banging! The reason I think it works is because it’s not set in space or on a spaceship, it’s set in a normal, relatable place. It’s about the characters, about a couple breaking up and then the alien turns up.

If it’s an American film then people would buy into that. But here it’s like ‘Spaceship? Nonsense!’. How hard is it to come up with an original idea for an alien, when we’ve seen so many of them before? You can only do so much. It walks on two legs, that’s been done before. It

crawls on four legs at times, that’s been done before. But the design is what is different. I wanted it in the style of Carnage and Venom, the SpiderMan villains, and that was the starting point for the designers. Once I had all the concepts we eventually came up with our final design with the director. On set it was a combination of VFX and a man in a suit. He had stilts and could get really tall. Once you see it with the VFX you realise how good it is. It’s ambitious, and that’s what I always try and so with my films. Is it a case of trying to one-up yourself? Not one-up myself, but I love American films. They come here, clean up and make loads of money. I want to be entertained and that’s what I’ve tried to do. A lot of people love that, and some don’t... but I want people to come out of the cinema and be like ‘Dude, you remember that bit where thing came up and did that?!’ I want that sort of feeling. When ‘Kidulthood’ and ‘Adulthood’ came out, that spawned a news genre. There was nothing like it beforehand. ‘4,3,2,1’ was polarising. People loved it or hated it. A lot of people didn’t get

Actually the first two are very popular in cities. They weren’t theatrically released, but you have the same problem over there that people think that it won’t do the business because British people don’t do that. Or that’s what they think. When I go out to L.A. people will say ‘oh man I love you in Doctor Who!’, but then when I go to a screening of film I have people coming up to me saying ‘I love you film’. People who are into independent cinema out there, and that sort of thing. It’s something of a cult following. ‘4,3,2,1’ is getting a released out there, and that was always the plan. It seems like you enjoy the pressure attached with this industry, is that a fair assessment? You don’t really have a choice. If a company says you have to be in it or direct it, then fine I’ll do it. I just want to pay my bills and feed my children. I mean I love my work, if it paid nothing I’d still want to do it. I just wrapped on ‘Star Trek 2’, and I’ve got a few other things coming up as well. It’s onwards and upwards... done be surprised if the next thing I do is something totally different. The question arises as to whether Lucas himself faced a backlash for making a story about Black fighter pilots. David is quick to point out the reaction in the US. “If anything, George has been lauded by the Black film making establishment. At the end of the day, he didn’t have to make this story and he chose a black director to make it for those reasons. There are a lot of rich black people in America and they could have put up the money, but they didn’t.

David Oyelowo

The George in question is the producer of the film, George Lucas.

“It’s exactly the film George aspired to do. When he was a young boy and watched these sorts of war movies they led him to newsreels of dogfights that led to those scenes in ‘Star War’.

George was quite hands-on, and that’s understandable given that it took 23 years from the original idea to seeing it made. He hired a young director [Anthony Hemingway] who did a brilliant job, but no one is going to know CGI like George. When it came to the framing and tone of the film, George was very keen not to make it preachy about being black. He said ‘I want to make a 32 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

eye, and that’s what I borrowed for my character.”

What’s great is that the film has made a lot of money and that doesn’t normally happen with these sorts of films... that’s why it’s now getting an international release.” “When you’re telling a black story the temptation is to make the characters all upstanding, worthy men because we don’t get to tell these kind of stories. But when I talked to them I realised that they were just young kids who were brilliant but that they also had egos. They had a swagger and a glint in the

Oyelowo still finds his accent as something of a surprise to unsuspecting producers and casting agents in America. “I’m never apprehensive [about being a British actor playing an American]. I live in Los Angeles now, and that’s a choice I made to try and work in the industry there. They are still confounded by a black man who talks like the Queen!” David has been living in America for 5 years now, and he explained that initially made him decide to head for the Hollywood

hills.

“I’m someone who likes to think that I will never rest on my laurels. I had a very nice career here, but it became apparent that there was glass ceiling on which my head was beginning to bob. The film industry here is so small, and I aspire to do movies so I had to take my plant and put it in more fertile ground. [Black actors] can’t really do period dramas that have cross-over appeal that we are known to export. I don’t think I would have got to play a fighter pilot if I stayed here.” Info: Red Tails is released in the UK on 6 June.

Fast Girls Perfectly timed athletics fare, Fast Girls is a very typical sports film given a unique British twist. Feisty sprinter Shania (Lenora Crichlow) is uprooted from her humble home and signed up to an elite group of athletes to represent her country. Her main rival is the prim Lisa Temple (Lily James), who sees the threat to her chances of winning gold as a major issue. What’s worse is that the girls are

asked to team-up for the relay competition by their trainer (Noel Clarke). Can these differences be overcome for the good of the team? What you want for a film like this is that moment where you can’t help but get swept up in the moment. You want to be jumping out of your seat, cheering on our heroes to glory. Noel Clarke is the man who makes this happen with a sparkling

script which is light on characterisation but high on ‘punch-the-air’ gratification. The girls might not all look like highly trained athletes, but they do the job required of them well. The rest is a success thanks to the snazzy direction and overall sense of occasion. Lime Rating: Release date: 15 June Starring: Lenora Crichlow, Noel Clarke, Lily James

LIME’S JUNE FILM reVIEWS

Red Tails George Lucas might not be the obvious choice for a film about African American fighter pilots struggling against various obstacles during World War II, but the Star Wars creator is the driving force behind this flawed yet enjoyable movie.

Based on a real initiative – the Tuskegee training program – a group of talented young pilots get their chance to prove their worth when Colonel Bullard (Terrence Howard) pushes his superiors to give his men a shot. Having previously done menial tasks, the men are keen to take to the skies in anger. Tensions rise however when cocksure

SCREEN

Top Cat – The Movie 3D Another childhood animation brushed off for the cinematic treatment might not be the best idea, but there is a charm to this movie that is an unexpected treat. It’s not great, and only borderline good, but it has it’s moments and enough laughs to keep everyone entertained. The plot veers into inexplicable territory with holograms and robot police officers posing a threat to our alley cats. We can vaguely remember the TV show but were there really that many members of TC’s gang? They all blend into one, only allowing our loveable hero to stand out. The plot is utter nonsense, but it’s not a total misfire. It’s bright, fun and one the kids will enjoy during the holidays... even if they don’t recognise the original show. Joe ‘Lightning’ Little (David Oyelowo) begins to question authority and take matters into his own hands. He is also beginning a relationship with a local girl, but there is no sign of this calming his maverick ways. The scenes on the ground, especially the awkward romance, really feel overlong. They serve a purpose, but could have been done better. Oyelowo is adept at his role, but the character is just a broadly drawn as everyone else in this film. There is no subtlety in the dialogue, and an over abundance of characters that blend into one. These are some significant problems that are glossed over by the

superb dogfight sequences. These moments in the air are outstanding. They are easily worth the admission price alone, and certainly worth watching on the big screen. You’ll just have to put up with some boring

moments in-between though... so take some snacks. Lime Rating: Release date: 6 June Starring: David Oyelowo, Cuba Gooding Junior, Terrence Howard LIME MAGAZINE 2012

Guvna B

COMMUNITY

Words: Vernia Mengot

GUnique Vessel uvna (God’s

Now Assigned) is one Christian performing artist who creates influential and inspiring music. His artistry is consistently at the cutting edge of what will be the future for Gospel music. At age18, he appeared on the 2007 MOBO Award winners ‘G Forces’ album. He has also shared the stage with Grammy nominated and award winning American artists ‘Da T.R.U.T.H’ & ‘LeCrae’. Drawing inspiration from observations made living in and around the gritty and fast-pace streets of London; Guvna B has headlined at the Jazz Cafe and supported the likes of Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Israel Houghton, Tim Hughes and Hillsong in concert. In this interview Lime Magazine talks to Guvna B about his music of profound faith and religious understanding, his impressive achievements and the new projects he’s working on this year.

How did your mission in music begin? I started rapping in the playground at school. I always used to win the rap battles and that’s where I built up my reputation. When I became a Christian, I decided to change the content of my raps. From then I started recording music of faith and positivity. You have an impressive list of achievements, what is the driving force behind your musical talent? I just aim to make an impact on my generation. I 34 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

want to see people have ambition, faith, drive, and work ethic. Those are the messages I convey in music. The passion for those things drive me to work hard and I guess the achievements come off the back of that. You have occupied the number one slot on MySpace charts for Gospel & Christian rap for the most part of the last few years, how does that make you feel? Stuff like that doesn’t really sink in the way it should I think. I feel proud and it just inspires me to work harder and do more. Your most recent album ‘Scrapbook’ was downloaded over 30,000 times. Tell us about the album. The album is very personal to me. I call it my Scrapbook because I was very open on it. I wanted people to see that even though I’m doing well, I’m not the perfect Christian and life gets hard for me just like it does for everybody else. I wanted to show people that I rely on God to get through hard times and they should too. What does gospel music mean to you? To me, gospel music is a message of faith through relevant genres of music, and it is powerful in equipping people with the belief they need.

What music artist inspires you the most? That’s a hard one, it changed all the time. At the moment it’s Tinie Tempah. I love how hard he works and all the things he’s achieved. He’s very driven and even though his message is very different to mine, his work ethic inspires me to achieve the same things with gospel music that he has with mainstream music. You’re only in your twenties, yet you’ve done so much. How do you stay so grounded? I have a great family. They very happily bring me down to earth when I get a bit ahead of myself. Thankfully there’s no violence involved [smiles] At the height of the 2011 London Riots, you released a specially recorded track ‘Hometown Riots’ what is your opinion on the events in London last summer? My opinion is that there is no excuse for what acts young people participated in however it’s a shame it took that to happen for the government and other people to focus on young people and how we can stop the issues they face. This should have been looked at long before and maybe I fit was, the riots wouldn’t have happened.

You have shared the stage with the likes of Chipmunk, Tinie Tempah and toured with Lethal Bizzle, what was it like? It was great being the only Gospel artist on these tours. I find the other artists respect what I do and I feel really out of my comfort zone which is great, because I have to trust God. I love making impact out of the Christian industry as well as the mainstream industry. When can we expect to see another sell-out of “An Evening with Guvna B”? This year after the release of my next album. What new projects are you working on? My album ‘Odd One Out’ comes out this summer which I’m very excited about. The first single off of that is called ‘Free’ and is out on the 24th of June. Remarkable Men: Who in the community would you say is a remarkable role model? Anyone that inspires faith, positivity and maximising potential. Info: Website: www.guvnab.com Twitter: @guvnab Youtube: www.youtube. com/guvnab Myspace: www.myspace. com/guvnab

that educated him with a rich mix of music has a history in the world of music journalism. In his exciting fictional book The Intern, Dillon uncovers experiences from his own catalogue of work within the industry at MTV for eight years where he made shows about music, lifestyle and youth culture. Tell us about your most interesting interning experience. I think I had quite a few actually, I mean in that year I did my internship I managed to see and do a lot of things. The highlight was the MTV awards because everyone was under one roof. I got to interview artists and go behind the scenes, as an intern to be thrown into the deep end was quite exciting. What made you want to write a book about it? I think there were quite a few things. I always wanted to write a book. I collected ideas over the years, when I was 16 I worked in WHSmith at the weekends. I started the freelancing and that’s when I thought it’s now or never. When I left MTV and looked at the ideas I had, youth unemployment was coming to a sharp focus. As a music journalist I thought writing a book about this generation, was quite exciting. It includes some stories I had of my own. It was a fun subject to cover. And one that interns past present and future can relate to. Tell us about the main 38 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

Dillon Khan character in the book, Jay Merchant. He’s like quite a lot of students when they leavethey have this piece of paper in their hand. In the real world you’re told to get a job and the thing that a lot of employers look for is experience. Jay is like most young people looking to get his foot through the door, it’s about his journey getting an internship and the journey he goes through. With Jay he is pretty much someone that

is a very fast paced and competitive market, how do you stay so balanced? Don’t get caught up in the matrix. When you do get into a role, you have just got to keep balanced. Work hard, push yourself to try and get that permanent job. It’s no different no matter what field you are in. Keeping a balance through your work and life, with people keeping you grounded usually your family and friends.

An enjoyable stage would be when we set up MTV in Africa; I had to move the team over from the UK to the headquarters in Johannesburg.

He had an application form applying for a job as cabin crew for British Airways, he said “you have to apply as well” as a joke we both did. About four months later we got called for an interview. I got through, and I went travelling for year. I had a lot of debt, so I couldn’t afford to go travelling, so that was the next best. I went all over Europe and the Middle East. Have you always had an interest in music? Yeah I have, like most young people. My passion was always music. Whether that was collecting music, listening to radio DJ’s and going to gigs. I used to love reading album covers, sleeve notes, knowing where it was recorded and produced. I wasn’t looking for MTV, I didn’t really watch MTV. From there I think my path lead to MTV. You have an extensive music collection, who are some of your favourite artists? I think I grew up with a real mix of music, from London. It’s a unique city; a mix of people from different backgrounds and cultures. Music reflects this. From the Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, to Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince. Right through to Dre and Jay Z. Taking in things that I learnt at school, like classical music. With my personal culture roots from India, there is the Bollywood influence

in music, radio stations in London add to that dance music. A real rich mix. Now, you add dubstep to the mix and more recently afro beats. You get this wonderful mix form living in London; with London what’s quite unique is that it’s everywhere. This makes London a unique.

best thing about your job? I think the best thing about it was that it was the forefront of youth culture, reporting on where culture and society are moving. Youth culture was at the forefront of that. Social phenomena’s start at the forefront of youth culture. It was an exciting period to be at as there was no recession, money was rolling around, and there was a high level of exuberance at that stage. It was quite a nice time to be reporting that and enjoying it.

For the website I wanted to speak to industry heads, get the top five tips I spoke to Ben Cooper from radio 1, who told us exactly what they’re looking for, Dylan Jones from GQ for top tips on how to make it in journalism. Check out that website, it’s a useful tool with straight talk information, then the book. After that you should be ready. The insight is in both.

REMARKABLE MEN

Which male in the media industry do you most admire? I suppose I would have to say Jay Z, I’ve been a huge music fan, and for his evolution as an artist, being the head of a label to becoming an entrepreneur/ businessman and cultural icon. That growth is nonstop. He has influenced so many people on so many different levels and broken boundaries. He’s a role model for young people. His achievement is remarkable. To overtake Elvis Presley’s records and the Beetles is staggering especially the world of hip hop. Jay has constantly evolved. Tronic host a showcase at Egg London on the Lovebox Weekender Saturday night. Tronic founder Christian Smith will be accompanied by label’s regular Bart Skills. Originally created in 1994, Christian Smith’s Tronic label holds a special place in techno circles. A leading force in shaping a less purist techno style, Tronic was amongst the first labels to embrace sounds from house and techno to create records that DJs from both scenes would play. Spearheaded by Christian Smith’s ever-popular productions, the label was re-launched with a bang in 2009 with the re-release of the 1999 hit, ‘Move’, which was followed by a run of releases and remixes from Umek, Mark Broom, Fergie, Stryke, Steve Mac, Anton Pieete, Matt Nordstrom, Psycatron, Jim Rivers and Wehbba. LAUGH OUT LOUDER! BREAKTIME

ALL ABOUT MARRIAGE!

Impossible to Please A group of girlfriends is on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: “For Women Only.” Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide go go in.

friends continue on up. They reach the third floor and the sign reads: “All the men here are tall and plain.”

The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. “We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It’s easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what’s inside.” So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: “All the men on this floor are short and plain.” The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor.

They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up. On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: “All the men here are tall and handsome.” The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor.

The sign on the second floor reads: “All the men here are short and handsome.” Still, this isn’t good enough, so the

There they find a sign that reads: “There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman.”

Who says men don’t remember anniversaries A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband was not in their bed. She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him. She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in front him. He appears deep in thought, just staring at the wall. She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of coffee. “What’s the matter, dear?” she whispers as she steps into the room. “Why are 46 LIME MAGAZINE 2012

you down here at this time of night?” The husband looks up, “Do you remember 20 years ago when we were dating, and you were only 17?” he asks solemnly. The wife is touched thinking her husband is so caring and sensitive. “Yes, I do,” she replies. The husband pauses. The words are not coming easily. “Do you remember when you father caught us in the back seat of my car?”

“Yes, I remember,” says the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him. The husband continues... ”Do you remember when he shoved a shotgun in my face and said, “Either you marry my daughter, or I will send you to jail for 20 years”. “I remember that too”, she replies softly. He wipes another tear from his cheek and says... “I would have gotten out today!”

Who’s in charge Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics: • 29 have been accused of spousal abuse • 7 have been arrested for fraud • 19 have been accused of writing bad checks • 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses • 3 have done time for assault • 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit • 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges • 8 have been arrested for shoplifting • 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits • 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year Can you guess which organization this is? It’s the 535 members of the United States Congress. The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line.
