Miss World BVI Far from the stereotype of a shallow event prizing appearance above character or skill, the Miss BVI World Pageant has a greater mission: “Beauty With A Purpose,” is the show’s goal as well as its slogan. In practice, this means that organizers search out contestants who are more than easy on the eye. They look for beauties who are intelligent and can express themselves well. Each contestant, in addition to participating in segments like the interview, cultural wear, evening wear and talent, also adopts a charitable or justice-oriented cause to focus on for the duration of her campaign, and if she wins, her reign. After the territory faced the triple-trauma of flooding and two major hurricanes last year, organizers weren’t sure they wanted to put on a Miss BVI World pageant this year, but they took heart after a visit by the reigning Miss World Manushi Chhillar and others from the Miss World organization, who came to the BVI to offer humanitarian assistance in March. Amid cleanups and activities to support the

rebuilding of the Eslyn Henley Richeiz School, the delegation encouraged organizers like Damian Grange and Violet Gaul to hold the event. It was a challenge to get everyone ready in such a short timeframe, but the field is down to three contestants. Contestant 1, Yadali Thomas, will focus on youth empowerment. Contestant 2, Anika Christopher, will focus on literacy and education. Contestant 3, Aaliyah Innis, will focus on raising awareness about sexual assault against women and girls. Each contestant has also adopted a species of sea turtle and the show will work to raise awareness about the need to conserve these marine reptiles, in partnership with No Extinction in Our Generation. The winner of the BVI competition, which takes place Aug. 11 at the Eileene Parsons Auditorium, will go on to represent the BVI at the Miss World competition in Sanya, China in December. Get your tickets for this year’s show at Umi, Caribbean Insurers Limited, or from any of the contestants or committee members. Reserved seats cost $30, general admission is $25.

By Chrystall Kanyuck-Abel Living in a tourist destination means that we are all walking information kiosks in one form or another. If you spend a lot of time walking around Road Town, you’ll often meet visitors asking for directions somewhere. Work on a boat? People want to know about pirates and their treasure. Serve food at a restaurant? They want to hear about local dishes. Personally, I get to field a lot of questions via the emails to our sister publication, the BVI Welcome magazine. Generally, these are folks who have found the magazine’s website and are trying to think through the logistics of an upcoming trip: Is it possible to catch a ferry after a certain hour? Who gives good island tours? Is there a way to get from St. Thomas directly to my hotel? What is the best beach for ______? I like hearing from these folks and try my best to assist them, and they’re always appreciative. Some people seem to lose their common sense when they come on vacation, asking questions that will get a laugh before they get an answer. I’ve heard of folks aboard a yacht asking the captain how far above sea level they were (captain looked over the side Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

and said, “about three feet”). I’ve heard of others asking where the beach is while standing at a beach bar, and, my personal favorite, there was a visitor who wanted to know the best way experience the water under the island… because he thought it floated atop the water like a really big bouy. Thank goodness people on vacation have a good sense of humor and can laugh at themselves. Of course, as in most encounters with new people, the first thing I will get asked if it’s going to be a substantial conversation is where I’m from. Once people learn that I was not born a daughter of the soil but have adopted the BVI as my home, the nature of the questions quickly changes from a tone of idle curiosity to something far more specific. They want to know how I got here and, although it’s sometimes phrased differently, how they can move here too. Since a grand total of zero of these people are recent journalism school graduates, alas, they can’t follow my path. It honestly feels strange to be the subject of that laser-focus of envy, but, I always think, who can blame them for wanting to move to paradise?

the doctor. I do need to go, but not with Pierre. Pierre I had just left the court room when my assistant gave me a message that made me run all the way to my ride and again to the reception desk at the hospital. My heart dropped when I saw her laid out in the hospital bed hooked up to a couple of drip lines. “Hi sweetie, I hope I didn’t scare you,” she said weakly, “I think I’ve been working too much.” Before I could answer, a doctor walked in and I got up to introduce myself to her. Bella was gesturing to the doctor, but the doctor kept on talking anyway. “Oh hi, it’s nice to met partners of my transgender patients and learn how they are coping with their partner’s transition.” The room seemed to freeze. “I’m sorry, did you say transgender?” I asked, just to make sure. Her answer must have been yes but all I can really recall is coming to on the floor with a nurse hovering over me. Bella Ever since that day in the hospital I’ve been constantly looking over my shoulder. I locked down my social media accounts, changed all my locks and and my home security codes. I did not give Jazz the new front door key in fear Pierre would force her to give it to him. All I told her was that we had a bad breakup and that he was crazy.
Jazz The detective asked me to watch my tone, but how could I help it? I was so furious! I told him how Shelly wasn’t much older than I am and that I hardly ever talked to her because I always felt that she married my dad for money. The detective explained Shelly’s claims that since my dad died she can’t find some stuff. I had to stop him. “Detective, when my dad died, I was here. I reached out to Shelly and asked her about funeral arrangements and what I could do from my end to speed things up, and she told me she would deal with it all and let me know the date. When I got to Florida, I took my friend with me and didn’t even stay at my dad’s house, we stayed in a hotel. As a matter of fact, there was a will reading and after that I was on a flight back home.” The detective looked doubtful and asked for my friend’s name and contact information and told me not to leave town. Clearly, Shelly’s version was totally different. Daddy didn’t leave Shelly much, just half a million dollars. Has she blown it already? Whatever her reasoning, she wont be getting a dime from me. Nice try, Shelly. Bella A month has passed and I’m still vomiting and Pierre still insists that I must be pregnant. I took a home pregnancy test and showed him, but he still wasn’t convinced. He wants us both to go to 13

Til Death Do Us Part By Laura Thomas I finally got to watch the movie that I’ve been dying to see since last year. It came out in theaters September 2017. I wasn’t interested because of the cast, but more for the writer and director Christopher Stokes. Although not all his films are block busters (he’s the writer/producer behind You Got Served, Somebody Help Me and Battlefield America) but I do enjoy them. In Til Death Do Us Part, Madison (Annie Ilonzeh) and Michael (Stephen Bishop) planned to spend their lives together, but Michael’s controlling ways and anger issues turn their perfect marriage into a nightmare. In the beginning of the film, Michael seems like a decent, caring husband. Madision was “baby happy,” and wanted children right after they married but through little chatter and comments Michael made it clear that he wanted to wait and just enjoy his wife on his own for now. After Madison uncovers his dark secret, Michael’s previously unseen narcissistic psychopath ways are unleashed. Although it was set up as a big surprise, if you paid close attention to details you could have guessed what was to come. His controlling ways shone through Limin’Times Entertainment Gude

in little decisions like the white piano that he bought – it wasn’t the color she wanted; it was the color he always insisted she wear. After Madison tells her best friend Chelsea (Robinne Lee) how Michael was abusing her, Chelsea fears for her best friend’s life and comes up with a plan to put a stop to it: the women would convince Michael that his wife and unborn child are dead. After Madison’s disappearance, she adopts a new identity, including a new name, Kate, and a new job. As Kate, she befriends her new neighbor Alex (Taye Diggs). The pair forms a closed friendship including introducing him and his daughter to Chelsea. A call from Madison’s former place of employment causes Michael to realize that she may be still alive. He hires his good friend Rob (Malik Yoba) to find her who in turn asks his friend to let him do the job he was hired to do. When Michael discovers where Kate/Madison has been hiding, he quickly brings back her nightmarish former reality. Til death do us part can be streamed on Amazon.com.

Growing Old With Grace Brian is a 69-year-old diabetic who sometimes can’t perform as he used to, which annoys him more than his partner. When he becomes frustrated, he is physically rough, almost to the point of being abusive, and tries to force things that are objectively impossible. His partner, however, is okay with engaging in those activities when possible and doing other things in between because she loves him and being close to him is what matters. Then we have 65-year-old Janet, who while not old per se, is at an age where her family expects a certain kind of behavior. Janet had to work and struggle in her youth, and now that she is financially secure, she wants to revive those days. She only “dates” men in their 30s, dresses provocatively and changes her hairstyle every 2 weeks. All attempts by her children to get her to go to church or date her peers have failed. These scenarios are both from real letters submitted by the gentleman’s wife and the lady’s daughter. They may seem almost humorous, but the psychological impact of someone not accepting who and where they are can be devastating when they get a wake-up call. In the case of the woman, we can say it’s her right to live as she pleases and yes it is. However, the aging process is not something to fight but to accept. To do that properly, we need to have our mental and emotional maturity in sync with the physical body. “You are as young as you feel” is a concept that has some truth but can be misguiding. I read somewhere about the idea of growing with GRACE and I want to apply to these situations:
Gratitude. Being thankful for your journey so far, the lessons learned, the experience gained and sharing those blessing with those around you to light someone else’s path. Resilience. This is the ability to bounce back after hardship. For the gentleman, any reduction in physical capability would be difficult to accept; but he can learn how to live with it and do the best he can by taking care of himself and being considerate of his partner. Attitude. The way you view your life as you age is the biggest determining factor of your happiness. If you feel like you are losing something, you will constantly be dissatisfied and be grasping for what can never be regained. If instead you welcome the changes, you will better be able to accept the inevitable. Our 65-year-old woman doesn’t have to try to recreate herself as a teenager, but she can be a glamorous and adventurous as a 65-year-old. Courage. It takes courage to accept that you might walk a little slower, to attend funerals of people you went to school with, and to face your own mortality. It takes courage to create your own concept of beauty as an aging person. Pains will come, but you can handle it. Education. Learn how your body is changing: Keep all your medical appointments and find out from a professional what your diagnoses mean, what the side effects of your medications are, and how much food and exercise you need. Of course, everyone can be as young at heart as they like, but know that change will come and be prepared for it. 17

NACAC Championships Live versity of Toronto’s Varsity Stadium, where there are 21 events on the men’s and 21 events on the women’s program, spread over three days of competition. The region’s leading athletes will be competing for $200,000 Canadian or $153,000 US in prizes. This is the first time the championship is offering prize monies with $2,000 for each winner, $1,000 for second place and $350 for third place. Day one will have two sessions while days 2 and 3 have one session each. I’ll be bringing reports from the championships on CBN 90.9 FM on Friday, Aug. 10 at 10am, 2pm and 9:30 pm. On Saturday Aug. 11, I’ll have reports at 10am and 7pm, then on Sunday, Aug. 12 at 10am and 2pm, and a final wrap-up on Monday Aug. 13 at 10am. During the last championships, Chantel Malone, who won a Long Jump silver medal at the CAC Games on Monday, grabbed a silver medal in her pet event in San Jose, Costa Rica. In the NACAC region, Kyron McMaster has the No. 2 time in the 400m Hurdles and will be among 25 athletes entered in the championships ranked in the Top 5 in their respective events in the world on the IAAF list. With prize monies on the line, the competition is expected to bring out the best athletes from NACAC athletes, all of whom want to be a champion. This will be the first time in our sporting history that you’ll have a chance to get reports directly from the event. I hope you’ll join me.
Here’s your personal invitation to join me for exclusive reports on CBN 90.9 FM from Toronto, Canada, at the 3rd North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Track and Field Championships, Aug 10-12. Reports will not be limited to just BVI athletes in competition, but athletes from across the entire Caribbean. So, wherever you’re from in the region, I’ve got your country’s athletes covered. With three medals under their belt from the Caribbean and Central American Games in Barranquilla, Colombia on Monday and Tuesday, BVI athletes will head north to Toronto, in search of more hardware and, this time, cash prizes. Unlike the CAC Games, which was a multisport event, the NACAC Championships will feature just track and field and is a single sport championship. There will be 31 countries from Canada and the United States, down through Central America to Panama and across the Caribbean competing in the games. NACAC is one of the six International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Regions across the globe, which includes South America, or Consudatle. There’s also Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceana. In all, there are 216 IAAF members around the world. Unlike the CAC Games that ends today, countries such as hosts Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname, are not a part of NACAC, but instead, Consudatle. As Canada and the USA comes into the picture, it’s one of the strongest regions in the IAAF grouping. NACAC athletes will be competing at the UniLimin’Times Entertainment Gude
