This Week’s Feature Story

named McCabe, a guitarist and vocalist just like Uni. The duo was then joined by Drummer Tige Bucchino and bassist Doc Singles, and the four moved into a Nashville house to work together ‘round the clock. RCR found success on Internet and college radio airwaves and with their first EP entitled Rug Burns. They also have finished up their first full-length album, The Year of the Rat. Now, they’re in the Virgin Islands touring the US and BVI, simultaneously filming a TV special called Rockin’ in the Islands which will air on R&R TV. The show will follow the rockers not just at their nightly concerts, but also on their downtime, as the explore the islands and find out what limin’ really is. They hit the BVI Monday, and besides BananaKeet, you’ll find them popping up at Foxy’s on Jost, the Bat Cave, Jolly Roger, Quito’s, Drakes Point, The Cove (VG), Nanny Cay and Myett’s. Water, Water Everywhere I got a call on a Saturday morning from a friend, who along with myself keeps an eye on a house In Josiah’s Bay. He had stopped by to do a household repair and reported a “geyser of water” was shooting out of the main public water line just in front of the house. It appeared the house was safe and the water was only flooding the road area at the property fence line. However, he was concerned about the waste of public water and had been unable to reach anyone at the appropriate department. I assured him I would get on the phone and see if I could find some assistance. I called the only direct line offered for the Department of Water and Sewage and no one picked up the phone. My next thought was that the East End Police station might have access to an emergency number. This call also proved fruitless as the officer said he would be calling the same number I had tried. Then, I had a real “brainstorm”! Of course the Department of Disaster Management must have a number for disasters that occur on weekends. Again, no one picked up the direct line listed in the Blue Pages of the BVI Services Directory. I guess we will have to pray hurricanes and other natural disasters keep normal business hours.

Now, I was into this challenge and not ready to drop the ball until I had “gotten through,” as is said in common parlance here. Ah, the Fire Department – these guys deal with water, even if it is fire hydrants in a more controlled situation. The department official was very helpful and said they had gotten another call and they were currently on the other line with someone from Water and Sewage about the problem. When asked if there was a special number – he said no, he just “got through.” It appears the men and women who valiantly help our territory in putting out fires, also seem to be the ones equipped to respond to water main breaks as well. And best of all, they will answer their phone on a weekend or holiday. Thank you Fire Department personnel.

Easy A Olive Pendergast (Emma Stone) is a sharply smart senior at East Ojai High, with a social status so low that she goes unnoticed by most of the student body. But before long Olive is the talk of the town when a rumor hits the school’s radar. Olive tells a white lie to her so-called best friend recounting a one-night stand with a college guy. Unbeknownst to her, the haughty Marianne (Amanda Bynes) hears the entire conversation and decides to make Olive the symbol of sin. All of a sudden, Olive’s image is transformed and she can make or break the love lives of students and even a few teachers. Modeled after Nathanial Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter, Easy A is a modern comedy that delivers slapstick lines with sincerity. While the similarities to The Scarlett Letter are not wide ranging, Olive does embroider a letter A on her new wardrobe of provocative clothing. In her first starring role, Emma Stone plays the sarcastically sweet Olive. She portrays her sassy character with ease and is a joy to watch. Her parents (Stanly Tucci and Patricia Clarkson) boast a bohemian vibe and are more than accepting of her antics. It’s a rare teenage flick that can elicit an earnest laugh from those over the age of 13, but Easy A does just that. The film is certainly light, but it’s chock full of pithy one-liners that are sure to delight.

Accident Bringing Back Memories Dear Koren, I am having thoughts of my brother who died in a car accident about two years ago. His death left me really devastated. I feel uncomfortable driving and get very nervous when people drive badly. I find that when I get where I am going, I am shaking. Should I see a doctor about this? I want to get the pictures of the accident out of my head. –ML

painful as it is, you will come to a point where you understand that losing a loved one is a normal part of life and if you have any underlying feelings of guilt or denial, hopefully you will be able to bring it to the forefront and deal with it. Seek professional help if necessary. A counsellor can teach you how to change your thought processes so that you replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Give yourself a chance to heal by talking about your experiences and how it has affected you, admitting you need support and reaching out to others so that you do not feel so alone.

Dear ML, When a person is exposed to a shocking situation, the possibility exists that it will have lasting effects on them. There is a condition called post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) whereby the person has physical and emotional reactions to a situation soon or long after it has occurred. A physician or psychiatrist should be able to tell you if you are suffering with this condition. Some manifestations of PTSD include, recurring memories of the incident, feeling stressed about it, feeling nervous when passing the particular area where the incident occurred, nightmares, flashbacks, etc. Your discomfort with getting behind the wheel is a classic example of post traumatic stress disorder. You could have someone drive with you until you feel more comfortable. People are driving badly these days, but ensure that you yourself obey the traffic laws and allow people to pass even if you know they should not. It’s not worth it to prove you are right if it could result in an accident. Maybe you have not fully grieved your brother’s loss. Speak with someone about the issues of grief and loss and acceptance. Swimming Club. They returned to the territory in 2009, but had not been in the pool for over a year until they actually started training in October, after Bradshaw learnt about the OECS Championships and did her research. “We were actually looking for a good experience and improved times and that’s what we got and a little bit more,” she said of the competition. “I was surprised because I thought a lot of the other girls would be better than me,” said Elinah, after recording personal bests in both events. “It wasn’t difficult preparing because it was like another day of training.” Bradshaw said it was the biggest meet they have been to regionally after two in St. Thomas. “The level of competition was really good and the fact that they were able to compete helped boost their confidence. It was a good growing experience for them,” Bradshaw noted. “Being a new member to OECS swimming with two athletes, they did not expect us to even medal, but now they know we are here.” Elsworth Phillips — a championship volleyball player with Terminators — said his role is focusing on the technical aspects of his daughters’ development. “From going to the meet in St. Lucia, what I do is to compare a lot of our routines based on things I observed there,” he explained. “There are a lot of little things we have to iron out — we’re getting tips from the other athletes and coaches in St. Lucia. We are growing and learning, but everything is happening really fast.” While Elinah is too young for the Carifta Games, they’ll be working on getting Amarah stronger for her debut in that event. Where are the Olympic swimmers? They are coming!

Finally, Swimming’s Here

During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, a man congratulated us on fielding a track and field 4 x 400 meters relay team at that level. “But, you are surrounded by water,” he reminded me. “Where are your swimmers?” I had no answer. So it was with extreme delight and pride that I learnt last Monday that Elinah Phillips had made history in the pool. The 10-year-old Joyce Samuel Primary School Class 5 student put the two-year-old BVI Swimming Federation on the sports radar during its debut in the 20th OECS Swimming Championships in St. Lucia. She snatched two bronze medals — the 50 meters butterfly and the 50 meters backstroke during the BVI’s first swimming venture. Elinah missed another medal after placing fourth in the 100 meters freestyle. Her sister Amarah, 12, narrowly missed a medal in the 50 meters backstroke (placing fourth) and was fifth in the 50 meters butterfly, but she qualified for the April 22-25, Carifta Games Swimming Championships in Barbados. The Phillips sisters were introduced to swimming five years ago and honed their skills in England. Their mother, Tracy Bradshaw, a former BVI national record holder and the territory’s first female CAC Jr. Championships medalist, studied law in England, and the girls got into competitive swimming after joining the Bristol Central Swimmers Elinah Phillips, 10, right, and Amarah, 12 19
