The BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival days of racing practice, festival fun and a new two day IC24 racing event, sailors head back to Nanny Cay on Thursday for music

by Xtreme band to kick-start the 40th BVI Spring Regatta.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday will bring three days of world-class racing action and sand-between-the-toes partying under the stars at the Regatta Village at Nanny Cay starting on Friday with Eric Stone and Elvis White. On Saturday, the entertainment continues with a swimwear show and dancing to Quito and The Edge. Sunday is the event finale, so cheer on your favorite crew at the Awards Ceremony – before letting Bounce take the spotlight and get a tired yet happy crowd on their feet yet again!

Whether you are a die-hard sailor or prefer to bop till you drop every night, there is something for everyone at this year’s BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival. So, take your place on the rail, get ready to grind or just offer to volunteer and help, but whatever you do – make sure you join in this year’s 40th Anniversary fun!

The BVI Spring Regatta started in 1972 with just 25 boats and two days of racing. This year, 150 international boats will gather for seven days of what has become known as one of the Caribbean’s premier annual sailing events.

This year you have the rare chance to enter the BVI Spring Regatta & Mount Gay Hat Auction. You could own this special collectors series of ten brand new Mount Gay hats from 2002-2011 BVI Spring Regattas. The auction will also help raise money for the RBVIYC’s Youth Sailing Program.

All the fun gets underway on Monday, March 28 as the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival starts with the Sailing Festival registration and welcome party at Nanny Cay, before racers sail to Bitter End on Tuesday. After four

That’s Not Work…. It’s A Paid Holiday!

I was recently lucky enough to help out on a one-off charter on board a private yacht that my husband had agreed to run for some friends of ours. We had run charter yachts in the past, but I had not been a charter chef for some years so this was going to be an interesting challenge.

We both worked hard prior to the guests arriving on board to make sure everything was ship shape and the towels were swan shaped.

But more so, I was desperately trying to get myself back into charter chef mode, I could not understand how I could have done this so many times and now seemed to have forgotten the fundamentals of cooking. It shouldn’t be possible.

So, the moment arrived and off we went to meet our guests. They could not have been friendlier and immediately we all just clicked.

After the initial excitement, I decided it was time to introduce myself to the galley and start to prepare a gourmet dinner for seven whilst looking like an oasis of calm. Easier said than done when you have just made a lumpy roux and burned the crème brulee.

Of course, everything was fine, and we had a wonderful week of glorious weather, good

winds and lots of sailing. We took our guests on the full tour of the BVI and visited favorite spots such as Cam Bay on Great Camanoe and Eustatia Sound where they were in awe at the number of fish, rays and turtles that they saw.

As all good things do, the trip came to an end and it was time to say goodbye. Jokingly my husband and I mused whether the timehonored parting comment would come forth.

Sure enough and happy to oblige, one of our new friends said, “you guys are so lucky, sailing around the islands in the Caribbean – that’s not work, that’s a paid holiday”!

We laughed, as ironically we don’t actually work as crew on-board yachts anymore, and as any other crew will gladly tell you, it’s not a job for the faint hearted. However there is a sense of satisfaction and a strong sense of accomplishment that you get at the end of a charter that few vocations can give you.

Perhaps it’s the fact that charters mostly go well – sometimes against the odds, and the guests leave happy and relaxed. Who knows what it is – but unless I was terribly mistaken – there was a part of both of us that was more than a little bit sad to say goodbye to our charter days.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story Fans of offbeat comedies will enjoy this film that follows a 16year-old boy, Craig Gilner (Keir Gilchrist, United States of Tara), who checks himself into a psychiatric ward after contemplating a jump off the Brooklyn Bridge. What’s Craig so depressed about?

For one, he’s in love with his best friend’s girlfriend, and looming over his head is a blank application for a prestigious summer Cast & Credits school. Dr. Mahmoud (The Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi) checks him Craig - Keir Gilchrist in for a one-week stay in the adult pysch ward of the hospital, Noelle - Emma Roberts where Craig realizes his problems are blessings compared to the Bobby - Zach Galifianakis other patients.

Lynn - Lauren Graham The ever-hilarious Zach Galifinakis plays Bobby, a patient who Alissa - Dana DeVestern acts more like he’s on vacation and masquerades as a doctor to take Nia - Zoë Kravitz trips to the ER for “the good coffee.” Bobby quickly shows Craig Smitty - Jeremy Davies the ropes and talks about his imminent release to a group home, but of course, there’s more to Bobby than he lets on.

The only other teen patient in the psych ward just happens to be an attractive girl named Noelle (Emma Roberts, Nancy Drew), who takes a liking to Craig after witnessing him show kindness and compassion towards Bobby.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story lives up to its name, putting a mostly-humorous spin on a tale full of tragic characters. The weeklong stay is full of visits from Craig’s unsuspecting family and friends, shocked at his sudden hospitalization. But as Craig learns more about the background of Bobby, Noelle and the other patients of the psych ward, he comes to realizations about his own life – especially the people and things that really matter most.

It can’t be all bad. As irritable as their behaviour can be, children can be very sweet and helpful and can bring joy into the home.

Maybe God has placed you in this position to make a positive difference in their lives. Think of how proud you will feel in a few years when they have grown up and turned out well, just to know that you had a hand in it.

Dear Koren, My husband had two children before we got married and he wants them to come and live with us.

He and I only have one child together and that is good enough for me. When his children come to visit, I am miserable as they are not well brought up. He and I argue about them and we end up having problems. How should I deal with this?

–Concerned Dear Concerned, If when you got married there was no agreement for his children to live with you, then he should not bring them without your consent; that would be quite unfair. If however, he has very good reason for asking, then the situation would warrant a bit more understanding on your part.

If their mom died, had to move to another country or is incapable of raising them properly, then as their father, he might not have any choice but to act in their best interest. Imagine if something were to happen to you to change your circumstances, you would probably want the father of your child to take care of him/her.

It is an admirable thing for a father to act like a father and not just a sperm donor. Being a father means providing for the child’s necessities; being a good role model, loving them and preparing them for life.

You can outright refuse to let him bring them, but that might cause endless friction in your marriage and he might decide to leave to be with his children if you force him to make a choice between you and them.
