After two years of extremely inclement weather – the participants are hoping for excellent racing conditions this year. The Way it Was vals. There were shots of sugar cane being crushed using a traditional mill round, and of picnics in the countryside, dances and choirs. Throughout, he captured the people of these islands, many of whom were recognized by members of the audience as aunts, uncles, cousins or friends, and I loved the way people shouted out when they saw someone they recognized. Elton Georges narrated the film and it seems that he too was in the film as a youngster playing with the Green children at their home. Although some shots were taken at Green’s house, most were filmed when travelling around the islands including the then remote communities of Cane Garden Bay and Long Look – and it wasn’t easy. In the 1940s, the BVI’s roads were little more than dirt tracks and there were no cars. Green, like most islanders, got around by horseback, walking or aboard local island sloops and cargo vessels. Throughout the film, Green characterizes a time when people were self-sufficient and family and community took precedence above all else. There were other showings at Government House and on Virgin Gorda, and more are promised. For most people in the audience, me included, the film depicted just how far these islands have developed in a few decades – showing not only what has been gained, but what has been lost.

Last month I saw a wonderful film about life in the BVI 60 years ago. It was taken by the then superintendent of schools Thomas Green and was shown to an overflowing audience at the HLSCC auditorium. Thomas Green’s son, Sir David Green had restored, cleaned and edited this priceless movie which for years had been part of his family’s archive. It was first shown to the Premier and other government officials in London late last year, and with the assistance of the Premier’s office, Sir David brought it to the territory in February. This was the ultimate home movie, one that chronicled the life of not just one family, but of an entire island. The movie, which was largely shot between 1947 to 1949, depicted landscapes with pristine hills dotted by terraced farms and tropical fruit trees. Green filmed community events, teachers with their pupils in one-room schoolhouses, boat launchings and harvest festi-

Due Date If you enjoyed Director Todd Phillips cult hit The Hangover also starring Zach Galifianakis, chances are you will enjoy Due Date. The movie begins with the meeting of two unlikely characters, Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr), and Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifanakis). Peter is an architect and expectant father desperately trying to get home to his wife whilst Ethan is an out of work actor with an unusual dog, a perm and driven to make his indelible mark on Hollywood. Comedic circumstances force the two together on a road trip, much to the dismay of Peter and the differences between the two make compelling viewing. Ethan is a melodramatic, live for the day type who does and says exactly what he feels – there simply is no filter. Peter is a professional, has a beautiful wife and home yet comes across as a hollow, arrogant man. The two stop to visit Ethan’s drug dealer Heidi, played by Juliette Lewis in her inimitable spaced-out style and when Peter later discovers that their last dollars have been spent on the stash, he is dismayed. The trip continues in this vein with Peter suffering a litany of abuse not to mention suffering physical injuries due to the sustained antics of Zach. A magic moment in the film is when the two arrive at the border of Mexico, when the plan was to find a Texaco! Despite the misadventures, the two men - somewhat predictably reach a kind of friendship by the time they reach the hospital, somewhat disheveled and just in the nick of time. This film is not light family entertainment and certainly no rom-com as its name might suggest, but Galifanakis fans will not be disappointed.

Your personal E-therapist is in the house!

Indecent Language which could cause a lot of problems. Once she recognizes that it is indeed a bad habit and she must change, help her by giving her suggestions on curbing her frustration and anger so that the likelihood of her using those words are lessened. Maybe she needs to work on lessening the stress in her life or avoid certain situations that cause her to lose control. She can also say something else instead of an obscenity. For example, she can practice saying “oh rats” when she really has to express her frustration verbally. Lastly, remind her that this behavior not only affects her image and her children’s upbringing, but also her health as being that upset to have to curse all the time could mean a high level of annoyance constantly – the type that leads to ulcers and high blood pressure.

Dear Koren, What can I do to stop a friend of mine from using a lot of bad words all the time? She does it to her children and also in public. – Concerned friend Dear Friend, Well, you have two options: you can wash her mouth out with some soap and hope that solves the problem – clean mouth, nice words…or you can together try to figure out when and why she uses those words, tell her how she sounds when she does it and help her to recognize that she can change. Your friend needs to be taped and then you play it back so she can really hear herself. You might be surprised that she has developed the habit of expressing herself using foul language and probably has no idea what it sounds like. Remind her that if her children keep hearing those words, they will eventually come to think that it is normal to speak like that and they will use them at school and back to her,

Awaiting the CAC Family

Premier Ralph T. O'Neal signs the agreement as CAC president Victor Lopez, left and BVIAA president Dean H. Greenaway looks on

After 35 years of traveling to track and field competitions throughout Central America and the Caribbean, the BVI will finally play host to one of the events, when the CAC Age Group Championships is staged here on July 1-2. The BVI Athletics Association—formed 40 years ago—has been a CAC member since 1972 and participated in its first CAC event in 1975. Last Friday an agreement was signed by Premier Ralph T. O’Neal, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Congress President Victor Lopez and BVI Athletics Association officials, which the Premier called ‘a historic occasion.’ “It is very good we can have these things here in the BVI so that students, young people and all the people here can see what happens when they go out in the outer world,” the Premier said. The BVI will become the 11th country to host these championships, which targets 11-12 and 13-14 year old athletes, with each team comprised of eight athletes, two males and two females in each division. Prior to 2009, the championships targeted 10-11 and 12-13 year old athletes. This year will mark the first time the championships are held in the Leeward Islands, the fourth time in the Eastern Caribbean and the third time in an OECS member country. “We are expecting this event to be the biggest we’ve had so far,” Lopez said of the championships that began in 1985. “I’m happy that this event is finally coming to the BVI. This is an important championship because of the age group—11-14. If we don’t retain these young people in sports, you know where they will be going—to the streets and perhaps not going to

school. We are not only trying to encourage them in sports, but to become good citizens and go on to college or university on scholarship.” Lopez said they are very grateful to the BVI Government for undertaking this responsibility and this task of hosting the CAC Family. “Athletics events are an injection for tourism because there are a number of peoplewho accompany their delegations or that come on their own,” he noted. “It’s also important for us that the economy keeps moving.” In welcoming the opportunity before signing the contract, the Premier said the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, The Ministry of Education Culture and Sports and the Government of the BVI, must begin to advertise and promote this event. “We must let the world know, that in the BVI we have this important event and encourage people to come to see what it is like,” he said.
