Eroica Trio Takes Center Stage at HLSCC Also this week: Spring Regatta Continues @ Nanny Cay • Wrestle Mania @ Captain Mulligan’s • Kap Eye @ Myett’s
This Week’s Feature Story
Eroica Trio Takes Center Stage the first time in recording history. On the vanguard of a new generation of artists who are changing the face of classical music, as the first all-female chamber Eroica Trio ensemble to reach the top echelon of its field, the Eroica Trio has broken an age old gender barrier. To achieve this, they have established a unique identity by creating innovative programs, for example, a typical Eroica Trio performance might include the Baroque symmetries of Vivaldi, the passion of Brahms, and rock-a-billy ode to Johnny Cash “Poets and Prophets” which was written for them. The performances are received to rave reviews, such as, “The Trio plays with technical flair, raw, driven energy and high spirits. The ensemble also has plenty of charm and stage presence and it was obvious that all three musicians were having as much fun as the audience.” You can’t say much better than this, so for music lovers everywhere, this is one performance that is not to be missed. — Jan Critchley
Known to electrify the stage with their passionate performances, and the most sought after classical trio in the world, Eroica Trio is playing one night only at HLSCC Auditorium on Friday, 1st April. The Grammy nominated trio thrills audiences with flawless technical virtuosity, irresistible enthusiasm and sensual elegance. The three young women who make up this celebrated ensemble, Erika Nickrenz on piano, Sara Sant’Ambrogio on cello and Susie Park on violin, are known for playing the great standards of classical chamber music as well as groundbreaking contemporary pieces. The Eroica Trio takes its name from Beethoven’s Third Symphony (eroica means heroic in Italian), and these daring ladies perform the Beethoven Triple Concerto more frequently than any other trio in the world. While maintaining a demanding concert schedule, the group has released eight critically lauded recordings for Angel/EMI Classics Records, garnering multiple Grammy nominations. Their recording of the Beethoven Triple with the Prague Chamber Orchestra was so successful, it landed this piece on Billboard’s Top 20 for

Environmental Scouts Come in All Sizes Like many of my grade school classmates, I got involved in the extra-curricular “Scouts” program when I was growing up in the US. For girls of course it was the Girl Scouts and through field trips and community service projects we were supposed to build a sense of confidence and character. Our mission: to make the world a better place. I probably remember my high ranking “cookie sales” as my greatest contribution. In the BVI the Girl Guides is a wonderful organization with many of the same goals. A less well-known group and not yet a formal organization, is a small core of youth comprised of boys and girls, who care about the BVI environment and want to make an impact. This seedling group sprouted up two years ago at the BVI Spring Regatta and have been branded the “Green Rangers.” Over the last few years they have been specifically involved in the marine community helping out at the annual Spring Regatta and BVI Charter Yacht Show, to assist in recycling efforts and keeping the grounds clean at these events which draw large crowds to the BVI. These young volunteers have come from the KATS (Kids and the Sea) program, Rotaract and the area schools. As a fellow Pied Piper of the Green Movement in the territory, I was delighted to look back and see the line of small feet behind

me dancing to the same music. As the BVI Spring Regatta launches into it’s big 40th birthday this year, the village will be swarming with young bodies in all sizes wearing their signature Green Ranger tees. They will be manning the colorful flowered recycling bins donated by Green VI, hauling away bags of bottles for collection, and active at those can crushing stations. They will make sure that the Regatta Village is clean and free from debris and most importantly learning first hand how recycling is able to turn trash into treasure. I give a shout out to the second and fifth formers from St. George’s School who will be leading the efforts this year. If you spot a ranger in the midst of your celebrations take a moment out to tell them how proud you are of what they are doing. Going “green” is good not only for the environment but for everybody.

The Tourist
By Jane Bakewell
Crime Thriller? Romantic Comedy? Venice Travellogue? You might have to do your own categorizing after seeing this film with unarguably the world’s two sexiest stars. Angelina Jolie brings her version of ‘50s Hollywood glamour to her role as Elise, the elegantly mysterious English woman who has a date with destiny. This includes a clandestine meeting with her wealthy lover in Venice, who is being pursued by Scotland Cast & Credits Yard and a mob boss amongst others. Instructed through hand Frank - Johnny Depp delivered linen stationary notes, Elise gets her orders to find a Elise - Angelina Jolie look-a-like “fall guy” on the train from Paris to Venice. Enter the unassuming schoolteacher from Wisconsin, Insp. John Acheson - Paul bettany Frank (Johnny Depp) who is a bit mystified by this world-class Reginald Shaw - Steven Berkoff beauty’s interest in a farm boy, but with no compelling agenda The Englishman - Rufus Sewell of his own follows her whims like a puppy trailing a dog treat. Chief Insp. Jones - Timothy Dalton Seductively asked to join Elise in a palatial Italian hotel, it does- Sergent Cerato - Alessio Boni n’t take long for Frank to realize there’s no such thing as a “free lunch” as he finds himself the target of someone else’s life drama. The cinematography of Venice is gorgeous, especially the architecture, canals, and classic wood motor launches that look like Rolls Royce’s of the sea. The plot – well you just have to wait for the unexpected flips and turns. The romance between Frank and Elise– unfortunately flat as a pancake. Someone lit the match but the wicks must’ve been missing. However, the boat chase scenes in the canals of Venice (even though Jolie’s hair doesn’t move a wisp) are worth any disappointment in the romance-department.

Your personal E-therapist is in the house!
Men and Sports - The Spectator Perspective as possible, so that whether we are on the field or at home, work or play, we are already way ahead of the competition and we feel equipped for duty. Loyalty – if we are supportive of people, we cannot give up on them just because they played badly or do not live up to our expectations. Do we know the pressure they are under? The limited resources that they have to work with? We should practice acceptance of others, just as we want to be accepted. I will continue to smile when I listen to the self-proclaimed sporting pundits and reflect on their diatribes and hope that along with the criticisms, come some understanding that with most situations, there is more to it than meets the eye.
The camaraderie that is formed when men who hardly know each other have a mini-bonding session over their disappointment with some sports team or the other is amazing. We stand by lovers who cheat on us, we tolerate bosses who take advantage of us, we fail to speak out against discrimination and inequality, yet the voices of many men are loud and unnaturally clear when their favourite team does not live up to their expectations. Let us examine some themes which are very easily visible in the sporting world and which we would do well to reflect in our own lives. Skill – one must develop knowledge and competency to do what one hopes to be a master at. For some men it’s football. What about other men? Do they learn the skill of fathering, of budgeting to feed their families, of controlling their anger? Discipline – we expect our tennis players to doggedly pursue high standards of excellence through consistent and persistent training when we ourselves know how difficult it can be to reach our goals and stay the course. Do we limit ourselves to only one relationship? Do we exercise regularly knowing our health is at stake? Teamwork – all for one and one for all is a quality we admire in the players but sometimes fail to display ourselves. Teamwork means standing up for each other, watching your brother’s back, pulling your own weight and recognizing that there is strength in unity. Preparation – being adequately prepared means that when the time comes to perform, we are ready. Very few things give a sense of disorganization more than unpreparedness and procrastination. Do what needs to be done as soon Send questions confidentially to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

An Incredible Celebration What began as a destination race in the Sir Francis Drakes Channel with a few boats, has mushroomed into a Sailing Festival—where sailors compete for the Bitter End and Nanny Cay Cups—will have five different courses this year and the introduction of Match Racing, as the BVI Spring Regatta celebrates its 40th anniversary. “This will be an incredible celebration,” Regatta Director Judy Petz said. “The BVI Spring Regatta has a reputation as one of the world’s best regattas, this one is going to top them all. For 40 years we have been racing the Sir Francis Drakes Channel. Our slogan warm water hot racing, is going to be bringing probably 150 boats from around the world this year.” During its 30th year, I asked Albie Stewart, one of the founding members along with Peter Haycraft—who will sail in his 40th BVI Spring Regatta this year—about the early days of the event. “The first years were so much fun,” he fondly recalled. “We started at noon on a Friday, raced from Road Town to the Baths on Virgin Gorda, then have a party. Have another race from the Baths to North Sound on Saturday, then race on Sunday from North Sound to Peter Island where we ended the regatta and had the prize giving ceremony. We did that for quite a few years.” Stewart said that the regatta was run primarily with cruising boats, the early charter boats and private yachts from the BVI. When the racing yachts came in, they wanted actual courses laid out and more formal racing than what they had in the beginning. “In 1977, we started with the format of round the mark racing and more formal racing

and joined what was to become part of the Caribbean Ocean Racing Triangle (CORT) series, using different courses each day in the Sir Francis Drakes Channel,” he noted. Changes came about from sailor requests, Stewart said, and because of the protected sailing waters in the Sir Francis Drakes Channel the committee was able to concentrate on designing interesting and intricate race courses. “The people seriously interested in racing, said ‘we don’t want to have just one race a day, we want multiple races.’ In order to do that, you have to split up the yachts, split up the way they race and create two courses with separate starting and finishing areas,” Stewart explained. “Now we have almost three courses with a lot of race officials – but, it was due to the request of racers who wanted to get as many races in as they could in three days and have as many good races as possible.” From tonight when the Regatta Village at Nanny Cay opens—with a huge Mount Gay party and dishing out of Match Racing and Nanny Cay Cup awards— through Sunday’s closing with fireworks, there will be nonstop action. Racing begins at 10 a.m. daily, with nightly entertainment and, Saturday’s 5:30 p.m. fashion show followed by Quito and the Edge. Awards will be doled out on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. “Right after that, we’re gracing the skies with full fireworks,” Petz said. 19
