The concert will take place at the Festival Grounds on Saturday at 7.00pm with Pure Lyfe, Men of Standard in Christ, Chainbreakers and other guest performers. Going off with a bang – that’s this year’s Youth Explosion 2011, which is staging a wide variety of events from April 7th to April 12th under the theme “Youth Rising – No Compromising; taking responsibility to get to your destiny.” Youth Explosion is about empowering young people to believe in themselves and make sound life decisions. It is also non-denominational and involves everyone. An essay competition has been running as part of this years’ event with the theme: “we believe one positive word in the right direction at the right time can make a difference.” The winners of the competition will travel with other young people from Youth Explosion to Washington DC to participate in the “Million Youth Peace March.” The week of events opens with a Children’s Fun Day at the Noel Lloyd Park from 10am to 3pm on April 7th. There will be all kinds of fun games for the kids to enjoy - face painting, bounce-about, an obstacle course and lots more. Following this, on the same day is the Motorcade and Youth Rally that will start simultaneously from East End and West

Camping at Home I’ve never been much of a camper. One of the few times I’ve been persuaded to go camping with my family, I insisted that we take a mattress along in the rental car’s trunk and that the campground had showers and a canteen. Nonetheless, it was a genuine deep woods experience with a campfire and a park ranger giving a talk under the stars. I saw a black bear and deer, and hiked multiple trails through the blissful scenery of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. In all, it was wonderful, even if I did miss the comforts of home. So when we decided to clean out and reseal our cistern last week, the thought of being without water for a week was, “OK, I’ve gone camping, how hard can it be?” We gathered dozens of plastic bins and other receptacles for storing water and the problem of how to take a warm shower was solved when a friend suggested buying a solar boat shower. I got mine from a local chandlery, a five gallon black plastic bag with a short hose and nozzle attached, along with a handle for hanging it on to the mast – or in my case a hook in the bathroom shower. It turned out that “D-Day” fell on my birthday, not the merriest way to start my next year of life. So I conveniently arranged to cele-

brate the day with a shopping trip on St. John with friends, while my husband stayed back and did the dirty work with some able bodied helpers. I started the morning by filling my large collection of plastic containers with water, because when I got back home, much of modern life as I knew it – automatic flushing toilets, free flowing showers and my dishwasher – would be things of the past. It would be camping alright, but at least I would be able to sleep in my own bed and cook on my own stove. Or, so I thought. As it turned out the gas bottle connection had sprung a leak – and there was no cooking gas that evening. The choice was a campfire in the backyard, or eating out . . . . and as tempting as it was to cook hotdogs over an open flame, I naturally chose eating out. Next time I’ll leave camping to the girlscouts.

The Fighter

Boxing films are a great venue for “under dog” stories, as many saw in the film Rocky. Who hasn’t imitated Sylvester Stallone and run up stairs humming a victory song? In director David O. Russell’s take on a true life boxing hero from the blue collar streets of Lowell, Mass, we see a more convoluted story in Micky Ward (Marc Wahlberg). That is because although Mickey turns out to be the boxing legend, his half-brother Cast & Credits Dicky (Oscar performance by Christian Bale) seems to hog the spotlight due to his attention grabbing personality fueled in Mark Wahlberg - Micky Ward part by a history of drug use. Christian Bale - Dicky Eklund The film opens with an HBO crew following Dicky around for a documentary he thinks is about his comeback to the box- Amy Adams - Charlena Fleming ing world. He still milks his one time claim to fame with a con- Melissa Leo - Alice Ward tested knock down of Sugar Ray Leonard. The filmmakers have made it clear the focus is really about drug addiction but Nicky’s delusions keep him in a fog. Problems for both brothers stem from their highly dysfunctional family, who appear like flies stuck in a web spun by Alice (Melissa Leo –the film’s second Oscar performance), the controlling matriarch of the seven sisters and two bread-winning fighters. The chain-smoking mother wields power because she manages their boxing careers with a tight fist. All of this changes when Dicky heads to the “slammer” caught for drug use and Micky gets set up as a welter weight fighting in a match with a guy 20 pounds heavier and gets pummeled. Micky’s new tough talking girlfriend Charlene (Amy Adams) takes the reigns from mom and all “hell breaks loose.” Less of a hero story, this is the backdrop for great performances by two gritty actors.

You might also want to consider joining a support group like AA where there are others who understand what you are going through, have been there before and will be able to offer empathetic support. I think you should thank your wife for her encouragement and putting up with your mood swings and complaining. Your family needs you alive and healthy, not just for now, but for always.

Dear Koren, I am a 45 year old man and everyone made me believe that if I stopped using alcohol, life would be so much better. I am feeling very miserable and have bad cravings. Before I would stay out on weekends with the boys, but now I am home and my wife is complaining that I am grumpy. I haven’t seen one benefit to stopping. Now I’m starting to think this is just my wife’s attempt to control me and not for my own good as she used to say. –Tricked

Dear Tricked, I don’t think you were tricked at all. I think that if someone truly loves you, they will encourage you to make healthy choices. Also, when we make a life-changing decision, all of the benefits are not seen or felt immediately, but just knowing that you did the right thing, should give you a sense of satisfaction. The excessive use of anything is unhealthy and many studies have shown that alcohol causes liver damage, affects your pancreas, increases your risk of cancer and stroke and affects your brain, causing impaired judgment and reasoning and aggressive behavior in some persons. If you have kids, how do you think they feel to see Daddy coming home intoxicated, shouting at them unnecessarily or being mean to mom because he is drunk? You have made the right decision, even though it does not feel that way right now. Sitting in the Chair Around $3 million was dumped into the BVI economy last week during the 40th Anniversary BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival, which attracted 122 entries from around the globe, where Racing A Class was won by Dutchman Willem Wester. Sunday’s first race from Nanny Cay and looping around Salt Island was the only race the Dutchmen lost on their inaugural Virgin Islands tour, which began with perfection during St. Thomas’ Rolex Regatta, then continued with last Tuesday’s Bitter End Cup followed by the Nanny Cay Cup on Thursday, before sealing the BVI Spring Regatta crown. For three days, I had the privilege of sailing with Regatta Chairman Bob Phillips around the various courses, taking photos and doing live reports for ZROD 103.7 FM. “Tell me what you want and I’ll do it,” Bob said to those of us from the media including a film crew. “Just let me know.” I’d sailed with Bob before and knew what to expect—an up close, personal and intimate encounter with the action. Bob’s extensive knowledge of the courses, boats, and positioning to get great photos is unparalleled in the 15 years that I’ve covered the colorful spectacle on the water. He, however, brings a unique background to the event as an international race officer—an advantage only a few have when they are also the Chairman. Bob took up the task when Peter Haycraft who had been on the helm for 25 years relinquished the post. Co-incidentally, this was also Haycraft’s 40th time racing in the regatta that began with 25 boats. Haycraft said Bob had been on the committee more than five years before he gave up the

post and knew Bob was the perfect man for the job. “He has given it the expertise that I couldn’t give it and the professionalism,” Haycraft noted. “Maybe I could have done it, but not in the same way as Bob, and not as successfullythat is the main difference.” Bob is a statistical data bank. He knows every boat, class and captain or owner and newbie. Media personnel profited from his extensive experience as he rattled off statistic after statistic with a passion. He described the 40-year old event as evolving. On Sunday for example, the sailors thought they had sailed too far to get to Cooper Island and asked organizers if they could do something different. As they are always looking for ways to improve the sailor friendly event, they made the accommodation and the boats were started just off Nanny Cay. “I have the cell phone numbers for the top sailors out there, talking to them frequently, ‘hey guys, what can we do to make this a better event,’” he stated. “Peter Holmberg comes up to me every night and says ‘Bob, this was great, that was great, geez, can we work on this or can we change this or that’ and starting the big boats off Nanny Cay on Sunday morning was the result. We know what competitors want and we’re very quick to react to it.” 17
