Even if you have lived on a rock for the past year, you could not have missed the fact that one of the biggest matrimonial events in history is about to take place. It is, of course the Royal Wedding, the long awaited nuptials between Prince William and Catherine Middleton that will take place at 11am GMT (6am AST) on Friday, 29th April 2011. The ceremony will begin at Westminster Abbey with an estimated two billion people watching worldwide – a record number of viewers ever. The BBC is the channel to watch with the run up to the wedding being aired from 4am (AST). Here in the BVI many parties are taking place to mark the occasion. Tico is even running a competition named, “May the Best Host Win” where you post your best party photo when it is in full flow, together with bottles of fizz from Tico. Post the photo on Tico’s Facebook site and you could win four cases of champagne! Manufacturers of Royal Wedding memorabilia must be rubbing their hands together in glee as there are now hundreds of “commemorative” items for sale. The Right Side Driving on the roads of the British Virgin Islands have left me somewhat confused and with a few question. I’ve lived in and visited countries where people drive on the left side of the road in predominantly right hand drive vehicles. I’ve also visited the USA and Canada where the opposite applies – left hand drive vehicles being driven on the right side of the road. I had never experienced, however, anywhere that uses mainly left hand drive vehicles on the left side of the road. That was, until I came to the BVI. I couldn’t quite get my head around it then and still can’t today, so when I was about to purchase a vehicle I went with what I thought was the right choice – a right hand drive vehicle. Lo and behold, suggestions to the contrary started coming my way as early as the day I went to get it licensed. Months later, a neighbor of mine was so intrigued that he asked for a drive in it so he could “get a feel of what it’s like to drive from the other side.” On another occasion, a friend of ours asked me to give him and his family a lift home. Upon entering the vehicle his teenage son promptly pointed out that, as the driver, I was sitting on the wrong

side of the vehicle. A visit to a popular hardware store a few weeks later prompted a gentle scolding from a forklift operator who thought that the driver had abandoned the vehicle in his path even though I was sitting in it. He insisted that I was driving on the wrong side. These experiences and a few more have led me to the conclusion that there are a number of people living here who have come to accept and believe that the current method of driving is correct. The fact that roughly 98% of vehicles on the road, including those of the government follow this trend does little to dispel this belief. I wonder how many more common practices on our roads have become accepted over the years despite the obvious dangers they pose. Turning without indicating, stopping anywhere and pulling out without checking mirrors or indicating, driving with a high beam at night? I wonder! While the dangers of driving this way are but few I ask if, given the volume of left-hand drive vehicles in the country, which I’m sure is influenced by our proximity to the USA, the time has come to give some serious thought to driving on the right side of the road?

Morning Glory Morning Glory is a movie that is as bright and perky as its heroine, Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams), an uber “Type A” producer for a morning television program. The program in question, Daybreak, is fourth in the ratings of the four network morning shows, and news department executive Jerry Barnes (Jeff Goldblum) hires her to boost the ratings – but with a deadline. If the show is not turned around in six months it will go off the air. First on her list of improvements is to fire the current co-anchor, a prima donna of questionable character. In his place, she installs legendary newsman, Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford), who is nearing retirement and waiting out the end of his contract with the network as a consultant. Anchoring a morning show featuring glib weathermen, celebrities and performing pets is not why he had won countless Emmys and news accolades in his long and storied career, and his disdain for his new job is palpable. As the deadline nears Becky’s biggest problem remains the sullen and uncooperative Pomeroy, and in desperation she tries a number of risky gimmicks to boost the ratings. Becky’s incessant energy level (sleep is an afterthought for this workaholic) grates on the laconic Pomeroy and is a detriment to her nascent love life. An affair with the hunky co-producer, Adam Bennett (Patrick Wilson) sputters in the face of network crises and a Blackberry she can’t shut off. Diane Keaton plays Colleen, Pomeroy’s co-anchor. Bubbly and gung ho, she is the perfect foil to Ford’s pitch-perfect grumpiness. The pair shine in what could have been a shallow romantic comedy, and turn it into a most enjoyable romp through the television morning news world – and what happens when the end of one career is the beginning of another.

Green VI - Glass Studio Have a smashing time this Saturday, 23rd April at the grand opening of Green VI’s Glass Studio held at Myett’s. The day promises to be lots of fun for all the family and starts at 10am with the ribbon cutting ceremony followed by glass blowing demonstrations, an Easter egg hunt and lots more games with great prizes! The BBQ will be lit at noon and later, Brian Neale and Michael Bean will play live. The Glass Studio is Green VI’s first environmental project, a not for profit organization. Green VI Director Charlotte McDevitt said that “the Glass Studio is a demonstration project of how waste can become a resource, and currently three BV Islanders are being trained in the art of glass blowing.” Charlotte added that Green VI has other projects in the pipeline such as researching a viable recycling system, seeking UNESCO

funding for an environmental education strategy for the BVI and a clean energy campaign. One of the innovative competitions to be judged at the event is called “Think Outside the Bin.” The aim is to make us all think “is there any other use for this?” before we relegate something to the garbage. Currently glass for the studio is solely collected from Cane Garden Bay’s bars and restaurants and one of Green VI’s many new projects is to support research into how glass waste can be collected in mass and utilized in the islands. So celebrate Earth Day, head for the opening of the Glass Studio, perhaps learn something new and most of all have some good green fun in Cane Garden Bay! – Jan Critchley

The Virgin Gorda Easter Festival comes alive again for its 43rd year this weekend, from Saturday, 23rd April to Monday, 25th April. Lots of entertainment is packed into just three short days with music by Extreme Band, Jam Session, Elvis White, Caribbean Ecstacy, Reunion Band and VG’s own Leon & The Hotshots. A cultural food fair is the highlight of Saturday followed by the official opening of the George Tyson Festiville. Sunday brings a Beach Jam/Wete Fete at the Ferry Dock followed by the popular Calypso competition at 8pm. Get up early on Monday and join the Rise & Shine tramp at 5am. Later, the Grand Parade, provides the colorful grand finale with around 25 troupes from VG, Tortola, USVI and St Kitts taking part followed by more live music to ensure the party crowd can jump up all night long.

Wahoo Madness 2011 is this year’s theme for the 15th annual Spanish Town Fisherman’s Jamboree held over the Easter weekend in Virgin Gorda. This competitive and fun sea/sports fishing event attracts enthusiasts from across the Caribbean. After registration on Friday, the fishing action really begins on Saturday and Sunday with weigh-ins each day at 5pm at Andy’s Chateau. The prize giving ceremony will be at 6pm on Sunday with a massive $10,000 worth of prizes offered and categories include best female angler and youngest angler. So get out your rods and aim for a new event record this year – the one to beat is a wahoo hitting the scales at 100 lbs back in 2003. Game on!

Brisani’s At The Reef Sitting by the breezy marina at Prospect Reef, the restaurant has a lovely open feel and the space is designed with a Mediterranean flavor in mind creating a fun and relaxing ambience. This was all part of the plan for owner/manager Alsha Halbert who noticed that when she moved back to Tortola, that there were not a lot of restaurant options that could give you great quality food, good service, and relaxing atmosphere and at an affordable price. So, in November 2009 Brisani’s was born and the key, Alsha explained is bringing in highly trained chefs with years of experience and who can bring with them their own skills and creativity. Andre Muller, a cordon blue trained chef together with Vanessa Richmond, previously of Peter Island are that team. The menu is international cuisine infusing flavors from the Caribbean and includes tempting dishes such as pan-roasted breast of duck and Spanish style paella.

Thankfully, it still features some old favorites such as rasta pasta. A tapas menu has just been introduced featuring delights such as the lamb lollipops and duck tostadas, which is the perfect accompaniment to happy hour. The restaurant is also embarking on new and exciting plans - a delivery menu is being developed with pizza and other dishes that can be for family dinners, office lunches or breakfast as well as special events. Last but not least are the theme nights at the restaurant which includes Sunday Brunch from 8am to 3pm, Tuesday is Family Italian Night, Ladies Night on Thursdays including model makeovers and cooking demonstrations. Fridays is always a fun night, and so comes the challenge – drink the bar dry in half an hour for only $20 per person! The Under 17 athletes comprising the team are: Tarika Moses, 13, who ran personal bests of 57.97 seconds in the 400 meters and will be joined by Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner—also 13— who was timed in 57.99 behind her in the Elmore Stoutt High School championships. Warner will also see action in the 800 meters, where she has a best of 2 minutes 22.17 seconds. Moses and Warner are 2014 Youth Olympic Games hopefuls. Taylor Hill, 15, daughter of Guy “Toby” Hill last year became the first female offspring of a BVI Carifta Games athlete to compete in the games. Hill and Nelda Huggins, 14—another Youth Olympics hopeful—will contest the 100 and 200 meters where they have times of 12.23 and 12.25 and 24.96 and 25.21 respectively. Tarique “Tweety” Moses, 16, who has bests of 50.61 and one minute 59.92 seconds will double in the 400 and 800 meters, while Jayden Cline, 16—last year’s CAC Jr. Championships Under 17 High Jump bronze medalist, will try to improve on his 1.93 meters mark. Cline’s father Keita, was the territory’s most successful male athlete at Carifta, winning six medals in the Long and Triple Jumps and the 200 meters. He becomes the first male offspring to compete in the championships. Kanishque Todman, 19 will contest the Open Pentathlon. She has improved her performances in three of the five events she’ll contest. She picked up a bronze medal in the event at last year’s CAC Jr. Championships. J’Maal Alexander, 17, is entered in the Under 20 Boys 100 and 200 meters and has bests of 10.81 and 21.69 seconds respectively. Accompanying officials are: Angeleta Bernard, Team Manager and coaches Willis “Chucky” Todman and Carl Barrett. The Carifta Games began in Barbados in 1972 and the BVI has been a participant since 1976. BVI athletes have won 19 medals in the competition since 2007. The competition will be shown from Saturday-Monday on CBN Channel 51, starting around 10 a.m. daily, and there will be evening sessions.

With the bulk of the team representing the territory in the 40th LIME Carifta Games in Montego Bay, Jamaica, this Easter Weekend in the Under 17 Division, it’s safe to call them the next generation of Carifta Games participants. Eight athletes are on the squad—six of them in the Under 17 Class—and three of the six are not even 15 while two of the lot are offspring of previous Carifta Games representatives. With the territory’s 19 medals at the games coming in different waves—including two seven year spans between athletes standing on the podium—during the course of their careers, there are likely medals from the Under 17 lot. The entire squad has varying levels of experience including competing in the Leeward Islands Youth Championships, CUT Games, the Carifta Games, CAC tJr. Championships and Youth Olympic Games. Seven members of the squad are homebased athletes and all have recorded personal bests in their events during the course of the 2011 season and they will begin seeing action on Saturday. 23
