This Week’s Feature Story
Swimming and Wacky Water Fun If you enjoy the open water, swim like a fish and enjoy a competition full of fun, then this Sunday’s annual VISAR Swim the Sound event is for you. You can choose between either a two or three mile race, starting at Saba Rock and ending at Leverick Bay. Last year 59 swimmers took part from the BVI, USVI, Jamaica and the USA and the winner completed the 3.5 miles in a staggering 56 minutes and 14 seconds cutting ten minutes off the winning time from the inaugural event in 2009. In contrast, the last person to cross the line last year, Russell Willings, did so with a time of 2 hours 11 minutes, however he swam the entire course wearing full VISAR crew kit of a splash suit, bulky life jacket and helmet! With so many swimmers in the water, safety kayaks and VISAR rescue boats keep a watchful eye on all the competitors. As the swimmers complete the race, Water World begins, which is a fantastic family day of fun, food and party games at Leverick Bay. Last year, the crowds at the
Water World event also got a chance to take to the water by participating in Swim Cap Bingo, a wacky game that has the numbers on the swimmers caps acting as the draw numbers! Recalling last year’s event, VISAR Director Mike Rowe said, “It was an incredible morning of high energy and pre-race adrenaline, mixed together with a little innocent bragging and competitive spirit. The starting whistle sounded and the race was on. The awaiting crowds at Leverick Bay witnessed the finish of Swim the Sound and the spectacular start to Water World. All the families who came to support the swimmers or purely to join in with Water World had a wonderful and entertaining day." Events planned for this year’s Water World include kayak races, tug of war, egg and spoon races, relays and a frozen T-Shirt competition! Guaranteed to cool down even the hottest competitor! This is a VISAR fundraising event and each participant is asked to raise $100 registration fee, so if you are not a swimmer but would like to support VISAR, our voluntary organization that saves lives at sea, please visit visar@surfbvi.com or call 494-4357. — Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
My Brother Loves An Older Woman to date a younger woman and to have children, he might be gaining a woman who is confident, kind, treats him well and who believes in him. We cannot deny that age is relevant, but it is not the only factor to consider in the quest for happiness. One must take a holistic approach to relationship building and consider compatibility and similar goals and interests. Your brother and his partner must discuss pertinent issues of whether or not they want children, options outside of natural birth and the fact that he might be a step-father to a teenager. If he goes ahead with the relationship and biological children are not a possibility, they could consider adoption or foster parenting. In other words, they have options. So if you really want to help your brother, do so by asking him what he wants instead of focusing on what you want for him. Encourage him to develop open communication with his partner and let them decide what is in their best interest for the long term.
Dear Koren, My 27-year old brother met a 40 year old woman with a teenage son and they fell in love. I love my brother dearly and want the best for him. I personally think he deserves someone better in terms of age because he has no children. He intends to get married but what if he does and then 2 to 3 years later he wants children? At that time she will be in her forties which is not a great age for producing. What is the best advice for him? –Concerned Sister Dear Concerned Sister, Your brother has to make his own decision about what he wants. While doctors have said that under 40 is indeed the best age for childbearing, it is not impossible to have a child after that, although there are certain risks involved. Has he confided in you that he wants children? Maybe what he is getting from the relationship is more important than offspring. In any choice we make, we give up something. We might give up a lucrative career overseas to work for less money at home, just because we prefer the warm weather. We might give up playing our favourite sport, to be able to spend more time with our children. So while your brother might be giving up the opportunity

video views Just Go With It If you’re looking for a light hearted, laugh-outloud comedy then Just Go With It, will make you do just that! The film directed by Dennis Dugan who also directed Grown Ups and Happy Gilmore, stars (Adam Sandler) as Danny Maccabee and (Jennifer Aniston) as Katherine. The two pretend to be married so Sandler can keep dating his hot young girlfriend Palmer (Brooklyn Decker) who thinks they’re getting divorced. It sounds all kinds of nonsensical but if you are willing to “Just Go With It” it actually kind of works. Katherine, a single mom works as an assistant to Danny, a successful plastic surgeon. After Danny calls off his own wedding on the day he was supposed to get married and heads to a bar, still wearing his wedding ring he realizes he can pickup girls by pretending he's married. He carries on this charade until he meets Palmer. She likes him even without the wedding ring, but when she later discovers his fake gold band and
declares she won't date a married man, he undertakes a cover-up to try to keep her, afraid that telling her the truth will push her away. The plan involves getting Katherine to pose as his wife, conscripting her kids, concocting a divorce, funding a "Pretty Woman" makeover and before you can say, "Huh?" the new girlfriend, the fake ex, the fake kids and the fake ex's fake flame (Nick Swardson) who plays Eddie are off to Hawaii to swim with dolphins in Hawaii. The movie takes on a life of it’s own and leaves the audience wondering what could happen next, and although some moments are far fetched they are surprisingly enjoyable and funny if you’re willing to “Just Go With It!”

Mothers – Hold Them Tight During the month of May we often think of our mothers. After all, this is a national holiday in the US proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914 to be honored on the second Sunday of May. Many other countries have followed the tradition. This came about by the efforts of one determined woman Anna Marie Jarvis, who wanted to honor the memory of her mother (and mother’s everywhere) and did so with 500 carnations. Tradition in some church services today, have members wear a red carnation if your mother is living and white if she has passed away. My mother is not a “carnation type.” Way too “out of the box” and flamboyant for the humble little self-contained carnation, she loves peonies. Big full vibrant red, pink and white ones, which she has planted in her front yard (why hide them?) for all the neighborhood to see. So when I went back to visit her in the states for Mother’s Day, the spring was glorious and her peonies were the talk of the neighborhood. Many early morning strollers would stop to comment on the flowers while I enjoyed my coffee in a comfortable lawn chair basking in the sun and their reflected colours. So it was fitting that my Mom made her departure at the peak bloom of the peonies, just ten days after Mother’s Day. My sisters and I were not expecting it, her health took a sudden turn for the worse. At 88 years she still felt relatively young to all of us. Probably because she always remained so young in spirit. But she got her wish, her daughters and caretaker were around her bedside and she was at home with a window looking out at those glorious peonies. At the memorial celebration at her home the following Sunday, we tied red, pink and purple helium balloons to dance in Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Happily Divorced Former Emmy nominated actress Fran Drescher from (“The Nanny”) returns to series television in “Happily Divorced,” a new TV Land sitcom that will premier Wednesday, June 15. Loosely drawn from her real-life relationship with ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, the show stars Drescher as Fran, a Los Angeles florist whose life is turned upside down when Peter (John Michael Higgins, “Best in Show”), her husband of 18 years, suddenly announces that he is gay. They agree to split, but with the real estate market cratering, Fran and Peter decide to keep sharing their home until they can sell it. That leaves each struggling comically to step into a new identity — she as a newly single woman, he as a middle-aged gay man — while continuing to live together. “This show is inspired by our story, because Peter is now living as an openly gay man, but Peter and I split up before he came out,” Drescher explains. “That wasn’t the reason why we split up, and I was the one who ended the marriage. It was only after the split and (“The Nanny”) ended, that he moved 3,000 miles away and went into therapy – it was then when he started to connect with his true orientation.”
Drescher had lunch with a TV Land executive who wanted the actress to pitch some series ideas and the executive asked what show would get her back in front of the cameras. “I said, ‘Oh, that’s easy; that would have to be this situation that I am in right now, where I am single, my ex-husband is gay, and I am dating a guy, and somehow my ex-husband helps me make the new relationship more of a success,’ ” Drescher recalls. With Jacobson on board as co-writer and producing partner, the producers cast a wide net for an actor to play Peter, but Drescher was convinced Higgins was the right guy for the part. Higgins said, “I am a big fan of Fran’s — I thought, ‘This will be great.’ And the thing is, all my gay characters are very different, just as gay people are different in real life. But it’s all about who I am working with and what kind of scripts there are. Fran’s one of the greats, and we had a really good time doing the pilot.” Drescher scored a coup in landing Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner Rita Moreno to play Dori, Fran’s goodnatured mother. “Rita just hit the bull’s-eye,” Drescher says. A deadpan Higgins says he also enjoys working with Moreno, even though he has to give this “rookie” a lot of tips. “Every day it’s clear that she needs a lot of help, because she has no idea what she is doing. She’s got no miles on those tires,” he says with a mock sigh. “So what you have to do is sit her down and say, ‘Rita? This is the way performers work.’ But I look at her and I think: ‘There’s something there. Maybe it’ll come out one day.’ ” — John Crook

Legging Out The Rest Of The 2011 Season With the BVI Music Festival out the way, team and individual sports which took a weekend break will begin legging out the rest of the 2011 season. And, there’s no bigger game on the BVI Basketball Federation’s, Digicel sponsored Kenny “Funny” Thomas league calendar to get the action back on track, than Saturday night’s matchup between defending Sr. Division champs Mega Mix and Legs. Yes, they have finally dropped “Young” after carrying the moniker for 10 years. Legs had pulled off four straight Sr. Division crowns in 2001, 2002 (no league in 2003, 2004) and in 2005 and 2006. Over the last four seasons, they have watched a Verne “Bego” Turnbull coached team—first with the East, then Mega Mix last year—standing on the top of the pile for the last four years. Saturday’s matchup is their first test to see if they still have the Legs. Softball resumes on Friday with the unbeaten defending champs Pythons in the female division as the only unbeaten team, standing at 12-0. Do they have the legs to repeat and go unbeaten throughout the season? The final tune up for the August Festival Premier’s Cup will take place Sunday at the Ellis Thomas Downs. The feature race will pit 2011 St. Thomas’ Governors Cup champ Good Prospecting against defending Premier’s Cup champ Trevelyan. Who do you think has the legs? Young athletes from across Central America and the Caribbean will converge on the A. O. Shirley Grounds, for the 14th CAC Age Group Championships—targeting 11-12 and 13-14 athletes—that will be staged here July 1-2. Athletes from a record 25 countries—previous high 17— will engage in two days of fierce competition. Athletes in the 11-12 division will do five events while those in the 1314 division will contest seven.
Legs will battle Mega Mix this weekend
Sailors from across the Caribbean will head to the territory, for the July 9-10 Premier’s Cup Youth Regatta. Who will sail away with the title? Congratulations to sailor Alec Anderson—a Roger Williams University Hawks sophomore. Third captain Anderson along with St. Thomas’ Cy Thompson and Bermuda’s Sean Bouchard, not only helped to make the Roger Williams University APS/ICSA Team Race National Championships debut—but the trio helped to win its first title, after three days of hard racing in Cascade Locks, Oregon that finished on Sunday. After losing their first race of the final day, the trio pulled off three successive victories over Boston College—the last breaking a tie that gave them the thrilling victory. Anderson is a London 2012 Olympic Games hopeful. Congratulations too, to Texas Longhorns’ Sr. Chantel Malone and Illinois’ Jr. Ashley Kelly—who became the first two BVI athletes in the history of the sport—advancing to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the same season. It will be Malone’s third trip to the championships and second in both the Long and Triple Jumps, while it marks the first time that Kelly has punched her ticket to the elite collegiate competition. Both Kelly and Malone are also London 2012 Olympic Games 19
