This Week’s Feature Story
Sixth Annual Hope Festival Life: Live Abundantly is the theme of this year’s 6th annual Hope Festival which will be bringing top Gospel celebrities motivational and speakers to the island next week. On Friday, 8th July the Victory Concert at the Best-selling Gospel reggae artist Sir Rupert Briercliffe Sherwin Gardner Hall at 7pm will headline Deitrick Haddon, who has just released his 5th CD Church on the Moon and whose hit songs include God’s Able and Well Done. Haddon, a child gospel prodigy from Detroit is both a minister and musician. Other celebrity guests include Jamie Thomas, mtv Tempo’s new TV host for Rise and Shine, an inspirational music video show that airs in over 23 Caribbean islands. Known to his audience as Jay T, he is considered the face and voice of Caribbean Gospel music and there will be a live recording of the show at Friday’s event.
Also performing is Trinidad and Tobago’s Sherwin Gardner who has just released a new album, Relentless. This album is a throwback to his trademark reggae, dancehall and hip-hop sound that established Sherwin as a top recording artist. According to sources, Gardner is the 2nd best-selling Gospel reggae artist in history and once spent a staggering 21 weeks at the #1 spot on Caribbean Radio. As part of the festival, there will also be nightly events from 7:15pm at the Cane Carden Bay Baptist Church from Monday, 4th July to Thursday, 7th July. The festival was founded by Minister Michael A. Turnbull to help youth across the world experience hope. Other speakers at this year’s event include Rev. Bill Lee and Rev. Tony Lee who are described as “dynamic life changers”. The Hope Festival is not an exclusive church event, but a community event where all persons can attend and hear the dynamic speakers as well as experiencing the top international artists that will be bringing their music, inspiration and hope to this year’s Festival. For more information about this year’s event visit www.hopefestivalvi.com. — Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist is in the house!
Protecting My Relationship Dear Koren, Is it okay to read my boyfriend’s email or text messages? We are in a relationship for almost five years so he really should not have anything to hide. It’s not that I don’t trust him, but I don’t trust the women out there and he is a good-looking man. I personally know of two women who tried to make a pass at him while we were already in a relationship. I think that a woman should not be foolish and blind, but do whatever she can to keep her relationship safe. – LT
email or text messages. That is a violation of his privacy and those are actions that reek of insecurity and lack of trust. Why are you so insecure? Is it that you think that he is too good-looking for you or you don’t deserve him? Have you been cheated on in the past so now you have issues of trust? If he is with you for almost five years, that seems like a clear indication that he wants to be with you. You need to figure out the source of your insecurity and deal with it before it damages your relationship. Don’t fall into the trap of blaming other women and letting him off the hook; that is pretty common. Other women did not make a commitment to you, he did. Hence, you should hold him responsible for his actions and hold yourself responsible for your feelings. Wanting to safeguard your relationship is good, it’s just that you are using the wrong method. Do it with communication, listening, fairness, unselfishness and being faithful and honest. Make your time together meaningful and engage in activities that will create a stronger bond between you.
Dear LT, The responsibility of keeping the relationship ‘safe’ is not yours alone; both of you are responsible for ensuring that the relationship is solid and cheating-proof. If a man is truly committed to you, women can throw themselves at his feet and it means nothing. That is not to say he is blind or cannot be tempted, but real commitment means giving up on the other women to focus only on you. If he was encouraging those women who made a pass at him, well you need to let him know that you will not tolerate that kind of behavior and that you deserve better. I do not think it is okay to read anyone’s private

Country Strong A country singer’s struggles with stardom are on stage in Country Strong, a tale about a troubled starlet with a country twist. Kelly Cantor was at the top of her game, but after a series of alcohol-induced accidents and a stint at rehab, Kelly is no longer the star she once was. Gwyneth Paltrow stars as Kelly, an aging country singer with a bundle of emotional issues. She embarks on a fast track comeback tour with the aid of her husband and manager, James played by none other than the country music magnate Tim McGraw. James enlists aspiring songwriter Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund) and former beauty queen Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester) to open for Kelly. Before long the foursome is engaged in a series of romantic relationships and competitive banter. Paltrow is perfect as Kelly. The academy award-winning actress plays the part with just the right amount of vulnerability
and belts out ballads like a Nashville natural. Meester known for her role on Gossip Girl, is wide-eyed about her potential for success and extremely likeable as the perky rising star. The soundtrack for Country Strong is the highlight of the film. All of the stars bring their musical pipes to the stage and there are no amateurs. While the songs are superb, McGraw, the only “real” country crooner doesn’t sing a single note. Fortunately the others make up for McGraw’s non-performance. Country Strong is ripe with emotion, which at times seems a bit unrealistic, but the overall tale and strong character development make for an enjoyable flick.

“Steppin’ Out” for the Children of Haiti Sometimes a scheduled trip out of the Territory results in missing an important local event or performance. So I was a bit disappointed that my time away in May meant I would be missing The CADA Players Steppin’ Out dance performances at HLSCC. First of all, I am a great appreciator of many forms of dance and secondly the fact that the proceeds of the performances were to aid needy children devastated by the earthquake in Haiti – this was a ”cause-related” event I did not want to miss out on. So when CADA Director, Joanne Penney told me another performance was scheduled in June, I was delighted. I wanted to know more about her Hands On Volunteers for Haiti organization, and truth be told, I really wanted to enjoy an evening of local talent featuring musicians, dancers, colorful costumes, and of course a smorgasbord of dance styles and choreography. To say I was not disappointed is a vast understatement. I, along with a fairly well filled auditorium at the college, clapped and cheered the performers on, marveling that so much local talent was hidden under the guise of day-job descriptions such as accountant, lawyer, lifeguard, student and teacher. Wow, just a sideline? Some of these performers have a second career knocking on their doors. However, what I was most impressed by, was that these full time, 9 to 5 employed individuals would sacrifice hours and weeks and possibly months of their precious free time rehearsing for a handful of performances that they would not be paid for – that is in dollars. The group was inspired by the great needs of the displaced Haitian children and the stories of Joanne and her dance instructor daughter Sarah who made five volunteer team visits to Haiti beginning in April 2010. The musicians and performers donated their talents for free, and over $8000 was raised in the first three performances in May – and hopefully their additional financial goal for June was met. Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
Performance art to benefit a worthy cause is a win-win for all. The community is entertained, hidden talents are showcased and the public is invited to give. Tortola reaches out to her sister island through a volunteer community-based initiative. Now, that is giving outside the box! Hopefully even if you missed the performances, you won’t miss out on an opportunity to give. A young smiling face in Haiti is a pretty big reward. For more info: www.handsonvolunteers.org
