This Week’s Feature Story
Quito’s Culture Celebrate the end of season in style and head over to Cane Garden Bay for Quito’s fabulous closing party this Friday, August 26th. “Last man Standing at the Bar” and “Eat the Kitchen Clean” are two of the themes for Quito & the Edge the night and there will, of course, be live music by Quito and the Edge from 9.30pm followed by DJ Bertrum spinning the decks from midnight to 2pm to keep you moving on the dancefloor. Quito Rymer is probably the best known and most prolific singer-songwriter on the BVI music scene. He is a talented musician who remains true to his roots, performing at Quito’s Gazebo regularly, offering amazing solo performances as well as with his band, The Edge. As a young man he taught himself to play the guitar. With considerable original music to his credit, he composes both lyrics and music that he continues to share his music with the world. His laid back reggae and world music style appeals to many and one of his biggest original hits to
date is Mix Up World. Along with his band, The Edge, he has also opened for appearances by Third World, Freddie McGregor & Ziggy Marley and has appeared many times on US television. Growing up on Tortola, Quito has always been in tune with his island and its rich culture. He first found expression for his natural, artistic talent through painting and drawing and his musical career began in the church halls of Cane Garden Bay. These days, he is also as likely to be found in London as in the BVI sharing his love of art, music and culture. Most recently he was in the UK visiting music and art schools in Hertsfordshire, where he enchanted an audience of young people with his acoustic guitar performance, creative artwork collection and painting tips. Quito’s visit in June came on the heels of a Reception and Art Culture Show held at BVI’s London Office where Quito debuted his latest artwork titled, “Phoenix Collection : Rising from the Ashes”. So get along to “Quito’s Gazebo” this Friday night (closed until October) and get off to a flying start with live music from Quito and the Edge followed by hot tunes from DJ Bertrum – a winning combination that is sure to get you in a weekend frame of mind. — Jan Critchley

Back-To-School - Ten Commandments For Parents 1. Thou shalt be prepared and purchase school uniforms, books and other supplies early, so as to avoid the rush; this will also teach your child the value of time management. 2. Thou shalt start minding your child’s sleeping habits, so that they wind down from their summer schedule and get back into the school-time schedule. Remember, “early to bed and early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy and wise.” 3. Thou shalt support thy child financially and make his/her education a priority. School books are more important than cell phones or video games right now. Education is an investment for a solid future. 4. Thou shalt support thy children emotionally. Listen to them, communicate with them, ask about their day and look for signs of bullying, loneliness or signs that they are not adjusting well, especially if they are attending a new school. 5. Thou shalt know thy child’s class teacher and principal and check in with them for updates on how your child is doing. Ensure that the school has working phone numbers for you as parent and any other guardian the child might have. 6. Thou shalt not compare thy child to any other child. Nurture their uniqueness and recognize that every child’s strengths and weaknesses are differ-
ent, so allow that child to be an individual and to be the best of whoever they can be. 7. Thou shalt discipline thy child and teach them good manners and values. After all, charity begins at home. It is not the teacher or school’s job to groom your child into a young man or woman; they can assist but it is your main responsibility. 8. Thou shalt monitor thy child’s activities, and while they may be allowed some privacy, internet use should be monitored and rooms and bags should be checked occasionally to ensure there are no drugs, weapons or any other undesirable paraphernalia. 9. Though shalt ensure that your child’s physical needs are taken care of. Children cannot study well if they are not properly fed with nutritious meals, get adequate rest and recreation and allowed to have a balanced life. 10. Though shalt love thy child with all they heart and soul, and be prepared to fight against anything that has the potential to turn them off the path of success, speak out in their defense when necessary and advocate for your child on all levels.

Hall Pass Hall Pass, the most recent Hangover-inspired comedy to hit the big screen, is also the latest offering of the notorious director team and brothers, Bobby and Peter Farrelly. While it’s unlikely that Hall Pass will make top spot on the Farrelly brother’s best and worst lists, it’s a comedic look at the potential pitfalls of marriage with a number of surprisingly funny moments, along with a number of shocking set-ups and an unsurprising conclusion to the film’s central premise. Best friends, Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) have each been happily married for a long time to their wives, Maggie (Jenna Fischer) and Grace (Christina Applegate), but through the outwardly “happy families” view through the picket fence, the men are showing signs of restlessness. They are both unhappy with their sex lives and missing the old days when they were single. When Rick gets caught “sneaking a peak” at another woman as she walks by and gets caught in the act by his wife, Maggie and Grace decide to take the advice of a friend to adopt the “Hall Pass” strategy. So, to revitalize their marriages, the “Hall Passes” are granted, one week off from marriage, in which they can do whatever they please, no questions asked. The guys are skeptical at first, but ultimately accept the offer to party hard and to try to pick up as many women as possible, ably abetted by their zealous buddies. At first, the deal sounds like a dream come true, but soon these two
best pals discover their expectations are widely out of sync with reality and that, perhaps the grass really is greener on the other side. Maggie and Grace spend Rick's and Fred's "Hall Pass Week" at Maggie's parents' house in Cape Cod, and after a slow start, both decide that if their husbands have Hall Passes, then so should they. Wilson and Sudeikis have a decent chemistry that keeps them endearing – even when the pair is totally misbehaving. However, we are mainly only privy to their side of the story and their undeterred attempts to find adventure. However, in a surprise twist, it’s the wives who end up coming to terms with the more serious issues embedded in the film. Hall Pass is a competent comedy that will keep you laughing along the way rather than leaving you with any meaningful revelations about love and marriage. By Jan Critchley 5

The Attack Of The Frogs less than half full and my husband climbed down with a net and a bucket – sounding, at one point, as if he was wrestling an alligator and not catching a frog the size of a hamburger. In the end, he was victorious. This time around, the cistern is full, complicating the capture process. Emptying it is a last resort, so Alan came up with the idea of suspending an old tee shirt into the cistern. It was a low-tech solution, but one worth a try. Amazingly it worked! The next morning we opened the lid and found three clinging onto our Gap lifeline. We’ve since found the spot where they breached our defenses – and so far, the quacking has died down. Hopefully this movie won’t have a sequel.
There have been innumerable horror movies where creatures have run amuck. There was the Alfred Hitchcock thriller The Birds where battalions of birds attacked a peaceful village, darkening the sky with their menacing wingspan. In Jurassic Park dinosaurs back from extinction were on the rampage. As usual it was an experiment gone horribly wrong. And, in Arachnophobia, colossal spiders were on the eight-legged attack, fangs sharpened and dispatching everyone along the way with merciless efficiency. My movie is called The Attack of the Frogs – Cuban Tree frogs to be precise. I have no problem with that other BVI amphibian, the darling little “bopeep” frog. Native to these islands and with soulful brown eyes, it’s a relatives of the coqui, beloved in neighboring Puerto Rico. I’m happy to hear them chirp in the plants in my courtyard after a rain shower, and don’t mind the one that occasionally takes up residence in my showerhead. But the Cuban tree frog is a whole different story. Large and homely, the Cuban tree frog is a transplant that has taken root in the BVI and now seems impossible to evict. I have seen them climbing up the outside of our windows, leaving slimey frog prints on the glass. They make a loud quacking sound like a duck, but without that webbed creature’s charm. And now they have gotten into my cistern. Again. The last time, they slipped in through an overflow pipe where the screen had come loose. Fortunately, the cistern was Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Nigel Lythgoe, A Real Billy Elliot, Reigns On TV floor. Lythgoe also demonstrates a bit of singing. In a fake baritone, he launches into a misguided American Idol contestant’s rendition of Phantom of the Opera. One aspect that pleased him most about the recent Idol season was if anyone sang like that in an audition, the judges asked what else was in the hopeful’s repertoire. “They were given the opportunity to grow in the audition room,” he says. “That has not happened before.” “I’m extremely happy with the success we had this season,” he says. “It was a season of transition, a season where we lost our two No. 1 stars. I’m thrilled, delighted. I always said it’s about the talent. This year it was about the talent.” For next season, Lythgoe’s mulling over the voting process. “I am going to be interested in listening to one device, one vote, each week,” he says. “Voting will be discussed. It is unique to Idol, the way we have it now.” If it did change, “we would never be able to boast again 72 million votes in a night.” Though SYTYCD is a hit on a smaller scale, its legacy could be lasting. “One of the wonderful results of having a popular show about dance,” he says, “is that it can reach more people, especially kids, who may approach their parents and say, ‘I want to be a dancer!’ and not feel guilty or bad.” He wants to go to Boston and Charleston, S.C., and to play golf. At 62, Lythgoe’s philosophy is, “enjoy life, have fun and even when you are working, find the fun in it.”
Decades after he hung up his dance shoes, Nigel Lythgoe glides gracefully through a crowd. The executive producer of Fox’s American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, which has its season finale Thursday, is in New York to meet advertisers. For half an hour, he slips into a room and fields any question Zap2it poses. Wearing a beautifully tailored dark suit, blond hair worn long and a red tie, Lythgoe, who also judges SYTYCD, doesn’t bother with airs. “I came from nothing,” says the son of a dockworker. “I had to work my way up. If you come from nothing, you have to work harder. A lot of the greatest characters in the world have come from nothing. Dancers are so passionate. You have to be. You work every single hour. You are underpaid and rejected a great deal of the time. It’s a very short life. One of the changes this season was with the type of dancers selected. “We took more not-formally-trained dancers, more street dancers,” he says. “I wanted to see something else. I was literally shocked where street went this year.” Lythgoe doesn’t dance at all these days. “I do Pilates,” he says. “I get pulled about. I am such, and always was, a stiff person.” To prove his point, he stands, plants his feet farther apart than his shoulders and still can’t touch the
