ARAGORN’S CHINA FIRE BALL ALSO THIS WEEK: Bounce Virgo Party • Hibiscus Society Annual Flower Show • 350 Global Event @ HLSCC
This Week’s Feature Story
Aragorn Makes A Glowing Impression BVI Artist, Aragorn Dick-Read known locally for the dramatic fire balls that glow at Trellis Bay’s monthly full moon parties, has just returned from a six-week visit to China where he was invited by the China Changchun International Sculpture Symposium to create the biggest fire ball sculpture in the world. The fire ball has become Aragorn’s signature work of art and is made from steel spheres from which he cuts out intricate designs of human figures, animals, symbols and patterns. As anyone who has been to the Trellis Bay Full Moon parties will know, they are at their most impressive when a fire is lit inside them and they are placed on water – the ball glows and the dancing firelight brings alive the sculpted images to create a magical effect. It’s a performance. China had their first taste of a full moon party when Aragorn decided that it was the only fitting way to mark the completion of the sculpture. Anticipating the occasion and with the help of his interpreter, “Agent 7,” he got permission to hold the party. So on the night of the full moon in August, workers and artists gathered in anticipation and the balls were lit. The vibe of the crowd grew with the fire, cameras

clicked and people danced – everyone was having a ball. Except perhaps the committee, who was fearful that the ball would be damaged, got cold feet and tried to put the fire out! However, perseverance prevailed and Aragorn and fellow artists and workers formed a human barrier to protect the fire, which raged on as the musicians played and the night was won! The fire ball is now a permanent feature of the Changchun World Sculpture Park, which is the largest of its kind in the world. Although it is highly unlikely that this fire ball will ever be burnt again, BVI residents can enjoy their own burning balls at the next Trellis Bay Full Moon party on October 12th. — Jan Critchley

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist is in the house!
How To Know If He Is Serious boyfriend and a friend also. If you too stay together, you might feel guilty about what you did. Listen to what he is saying and watch his actions to ascertain if he intends for the relationship to be a long term one. Does he talk about his future with you in it, does he ever mention marriage, owning a place together, having children, etc.? When he introduces you to his friends and family, what does he call you? If you have met his family and he does not hide you when his boys are around, then he could be serious. A man will treat a woman differently if she is just a fling – but a fling does not last three years. So ask him what you need to know and give him a chance to tell you how he really feels without you acting like a detective.
Dear Koren, I am dating a guy for almost 3 years now and I want to know if he is really husband material. Is it wrong for me to have someone approach him as if they are interested, just to see what he will do? If he accepts her that would mean he is not faithful, but if he tells her he is in a relationship, I will know he is serious. – Questioning Dear Questioning, Do you know that certain evidence that is collected by prosecutors is not used in court because of the manner in which the evidence was collected? There must be more honest ways of finding out if your current partner is serious about the relationship. Have you tried asking him? Do you not question what kind of person you are to resort to such lowdown techniques? Entrapment is not the best way to find out about someone’s motives and sneakiness is not a good quality for a girlfriend to have. Even if the guy turns down the girl’s offer, whatever that might be, it could be that she is just not his type. If he accepts her offer and she does take him seriously, then you lose a

Bridesmaids There are no bridezillas in this bunch; in fact these ‘Bridesmaids’ are as out of line as the guys in The Hangover. Bridesmaids is the brainchild of Saturday Night Live alumnus Kristen Wiig whose memorable supporting performances in everything from Whip It to Paul have led to a well-deserved lead role here – though the fact that she co-wrote the script can’t have hurt. Wiig plays Annie, a mid-thirties single woman whose already fragile ego (her cake shop has gone under, is struggling with her crummy job, junker car, weird roommates, and no boyfriend) takes another knock when she finds out that her sole remaining unmarried best friend since childhood, Lillian (Maya Rudolph) is getting hitched. Readily agreeing to act as Maid of Honor, Annie takes on the task of wrangling a gang of mismatched, willful bridesmaids through the marriage preparations, with disastrous consequences. Annie takes on her role planning events for Lillian and the other bridesmaids Rita (Wendi McLendonCovey), Megan (Melissa McCarthy) the groom’s sister and (one of my favorite characters in the movie) and Becca (Eillie Kemper), but Anne begins to fear a rival in Helen (Rose Byrne) the rich and overconfident trophy wife of the groom's boss. Helen’s friendship with Lillian seems to have blossomed over night causing Annie to feel like her friendship with Lillian is not as strong as when they were kids. Annie and Helen begin to rival each other but Annie is no match for Helen who is one of those people who at birth was placed in charge of everything for
Cast & Credits Annie -------------------------------- Kristen Wiig Lillian ------------------------------ Maya Rudolph Helen --------------------------------- Rose Byrne Officer Nathan ---------------------- Chris O’Dowd Megan --------------------------- Melissa McCarthy everyone. It's not that she's trying to steal Annie's thunder, it's just that she can't comprehend that she isn't running the show and is desperate to be Lillian’s BFF. After Helen constantly shows up Annie and begins taking her shine as Maid of Honor, Annie finally explodes at Lillian’s over the top French-themed bridal shower that was Annie’s idea and Helen took over. That seemed to be Annie’s final straw. Oh yeah, there’s a guy on the side, too Officer Nathan (Chris O’Dowd) who after pulling her over one night for a busted tail light sparks an interest in Annie, but he’s so nice that cranky, complaining Annie almost doesn’t notice. The movie is smart about a lot of things, including the vital importance of female friendships and Kristen Wiig is excellent! So grab some of your best girlfriends and have a girl’s night in because this bunch of Bridesmaids will surely have you laughing out loud. 5

I couldn’t shake the thought of no showers and no toilette flushing. No need to worry though, the water pressure is regulated by the state Metropolitan District Commission so no interruptions occurred. Oh, and let me not forget to mention that a few days after the hurricane, we experienced aftershocks from an earthquake originating in Virginia. We are a One Weather World. attempt to connect the dots. I left Tortola mid August to visit family in Connecticut and Martha’s Vineyard. Heard about Hurricane Irene bearing down on the BVI’s and called and emailed friends to make sure they and our home were safe. I was pleased to find out that Irene passed with very little damage. Little did I know that I wasn’t through with Irene. I mean, cheese on bread, she was following me. A hurricane in Connecticut. Yes, I know it’s still possible. Ok, so the same “weather” I left behind in the BVI that passed with little damage was threatening to wreak havoc here in Conn. And it did. It was just so ironic to have come all that way and be subjected to similar if not the same hurricane preparations as home. Oh yeah, there was a diseased tree in my sister and brother in laws yard. It stood over 100 feet tall. The town had previously requested that they have it removed, but because of the hurricane, they assigned Public Works to take it down the day before Irene was due to hit. We parked ourselves outside and watched on an off from 6:30am till noon that day as pieces of the tree, some parts weighing up to 5,500 pounds, were cut and removed by crane. We then checked on the candle stash, stored all the outside furniture, secured the windows and stocked up on ice, water Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Peg Legs at Nanny Cay A lot new is happening at Peg Leg’s Landing, the open-air waterside restaurant at Nanny Cay that opened its doors in 1980. First it got a new look – a lighter color scheme, a cushy lounge for cocktails and a new mirrored bar. Long a favorite of boaters docking at the marina, Peg Leg’s many new features are designed to attract residents looking for a restaurant on the water close to town. “It now has a nice bright atmosphere,” says manager Gary Roy, who has been at Peg Leg’s for close to a year. He explains that in addition to the new décor, the menu with the help of chef Vaughn Grant has also received an upgrade by adding a new twist to many old favorites. There are staples like rib eye steak, pork tenderloin, pizza, pasta and rotis, but also some surprises like chicken and mushroom pie and mango slaw salad made from green mango and christophene, cilantro, scotch bonnet peppers and cashews. The night that I was there, seared duck breast and roasted leg of lamb medallions were on the menu. Each was served with sautéed vegetables and a choice of roasted potatoes or risotto. We chose the roasted potatoes, but may go for the risotto next time. Starting in October, the restaurant will be serving a new lunch and expanded dinner menu. The beach bar, a popular Friday nightspot has also received an Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

upgrade. A larger roof will keep patrons dry during a passing shower or cool in the midday sun. Chair swings and new outdoor furniture are going to be added – and starting next Friday Sept 28th Two Smooth will be providing their brand of mellow reggae, jazz and popular tunes. A few more items are planned for later in the year, says Gary. This includes an outdoor grill at the beach bar, where grilled items like chicken and ribs will be served. Yet another reason to make the trip from town – or West End or East End for that matter.
