Legendary Performers in Grand Finale One of the musical events of the year is about to take the territory by storm this weekend as Ali Campbell, the legendary voice of UB40 and John Legend, multi Grammyaward winner bring their unique magic to the exciting finale to the National Park Trust’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. The Jazz & Blues Concert series is the culmination of a week’s activities and events held at the NPT Village, the Queen Elizabeth II National Park. Topping the bill on Saturday is Ali Campbell, who was the lead vocalist for UB40, one of the top reggae bands in the world for nearly 30 years. Campbell has one of the most distinctive and recognizable voices in the world and the band had massive hits like Red Red Wine and One in Ten. As lead singer with the band, Campbell sold over 70 million records worldwide and notched up four number No. 1 worldwide singles. Since 2008 he has been a solo artist and has produced three best selling albums, always staying true to his love of reggae. Also entertaining the crowd on Saturday is pianist and composer, Arturo O’Farrill and his internationally renowned Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra and Quito and the Edge to add some local flavor. Bringing the events to a close on Sunday is John

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble... The mark of the holidays is upon us and Thanksgiving is the mid-way mark. The traditional American holiday has become a favorite of mine over the years. Growing up in the BVI we never celebrated the traditional Thanksgiving like the Americans do, maybe it’s because we don’t get the holiday off like they do. But fortunately you could always find Thanksgiving lunch and dinner specials at local restaurants. I really got the full Thanksgiving experience when I moved to Canada. Even then, I was shocked when I learned the Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving Day the second Monday in October, since I was familiar with the American celebration, which fell on the fourth Thursday in November. Nonetheless the tradition was all the same: turkey, stuffing, the works, and of course, it was a holiday. Thanksgiving in North America had originated from a mix of European and Native traditions. Typically in Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks for a good harvest, and to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community. At the time, Native Americans had also celebrated the end of a harvest season. When Europeans first arrived in the Americas, they brought with them their

own harvest festival traditions from Europe, celebrating their safe voyage, peace and a good harvest. Thus the traditions we enjoy today are an extension of the two worlds combined. Often we forget about the true meaning of the holiday, as other traditions have become a staple of this time of year, like Black Friday. We are all guilty of it, myself included. For shopaholoics and bargain finders this is the most wonderful time of the year when you can get the best deal on merchandise you wanted to purchase all year. We forget in our buying frenzy that it is a time of peace and thanksgiving. So remember the true reason why we celebrate this event each year. Happy Thanksgiving!

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

He wants me to share him Ask Koren Dear Koren, I am 19 and I have been dating a man who is now 30 for four years. We have been through a lot of ups and downs and I really love him. Presently he is seeing someone else but he tells me that he wants to still have sexual intercourse with me but at the end of the day I am not guaranteed he is going to be with me. He also says things to me like he is not sorry, etc. I am really affected by this. How do I approach or deal with this situation?

of picking up infections if he has unprotected sex with both of you and the damage to your self esteem knowing that you are not the only one. You should not have to share a man. Talk to him and explain your frustration and give him some time to see if he changes his behaviour. You deserve to be in a relationship where the person is committed to you and you only in a romantic way. It is even worse that he is not even sorry for hurting you. I am not surprised that you are affected by his behaviour; you must be angry, hurt, frustrated and feeling quite betrayed. You are a young woman and even though we all hear that good men are hard to find, don’t settle for just any kind of treatment. Keep looking for what you want – a man who loves you enough to not hurt you and who is proud to be yours alone.

– Wondering Dear Wondering, Four years is quite a bit of time – enough for you to have had enough ups and downs as you put it, and also enough for you to be able to confidently declare that you really love this man. Four years is also enough time for you to be able to determine if this man loves you back just as much. If he does, why then would he put you through the stress of seeing someone else? That is inconsiderate of him. Intimacy is not something to take lightly. Most women tend to have an emotional connection with a man during intimacy, so for them, sex is a demonstration of love. If however, your partner is going with someone else, things become quite complicated. There is the risk

Beginners In this romantic drama, Ewan McGregor portrays Oliver, an LA artist in a graphics design firm who has spent his entire life hiding from his true feelings. He is unsure of himself and because he is afraid to commit, has had a series of failed relationships. Why this seemingly talented young man with his life before him should be so sad is one of the central components of this film which unfolds through a series of flash backs, and some insights from his Jack Russell terrier. Oliver has inherited the dog from his father, Hal (Christopher Plumber) who died after a protracted illness. Hal, who announced that he was gay at the age of 75, is both the reason for Oliver’s angst and one of the two keys to his eventual happiness. The other key is Anna (Melanie Laurent) an aspiring actress, also fearful of commitment. The two meet at a costume party where Oliver plays Freud and although he psychoanalyzes Anna on a mock couch, it is obvious that their roles could be reversed. Oliver is in serious need of

soul searching and Anna who has run away from past relationships as well, has issues of her own. From there, they start a tentative relationship that ebbs and flows with their personal uncertainties. Looking back on his life, Oliver begins to see his childhood as a time marked by his parent’s difficult and distant relationship. He also realizes that his father only realized happiness after he declared his homosexuality and fell in love for the first time with a younger man. Beginners is a tender love story, a commentary on the price of keeping secrets and wry look at a life that may seem hopeless, but in the end turns out just fine.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

A New Look At Sports As Minister of Sports, Hon. Myron Walwyn was about to finish another conversation however, before I could get an interview, Fourth District Representative Hon. Mark Vanterpool came over. “We have to get this thing with sports going,” he told me without being prompted, which was music to my ears. “There are several of us in the House who have been involved in sports and have an interest in sports,” added the former BVI Olympic Committee and BVI Basketball Federation President. “We have to do all we can.” In my 25 years of covering local sports in the territory, I’d never heard such remarks uttered from an elected official, until Sunday’s opening of the BVI Football Association league. And, this was not even coming from the Minister of Sports! After thanking the people who elected him, Sports Minister Walwyn said he and his party are dedicated to the development of the whole person including their involvemnet in sports. “We know that we have very good talent here in the Virgin Islands,” he said. “Being involved with athletics myself, I know of the number of fine athletes that we had that passed through the BVI High School but didn’t have the opportunity to further hone their skills. We want to ensure, encourage and foster the young talent we have now and see it grow,” he continued. “We know that we have hit a financial snag, but I think once we revive ourselves, we are rich enough in resources to give a fair amount of those resources towards the development of sports and the development of our athletes, so that they will not be at a disadvantage when they go overseas.” The Sports Minister said he knows facilities are a

Sports Minister Hon. Myron Walwyn

major concern. He said they will meet with the various sporting bodies to see how best the government can advance sports. “We don’t have all the answers,” the former sprinter pointed out. “Sports tourism provides another avenue that our government is very concerned about and we want to see how much money we can bring into the coffers through the sporting industry.” Hon. Walwyn said he would seek the guidance of those involved in the sporting associations with the aim of improving facilities to meet international standards, in order for the territory to be able to host championships and tournaments. “We all know what the spinoff effects for that will be, hotels, restaurants and the kind of financial energy we’ll get in the community by doing that, so that is something we want to discuss.” Furthermore, the Sports Minister added, once athletes have been able to develop to the point of Usain Bolt of Jamaica, for example, athletes can be used to help promote the territory, he stated. “That is the direction we want to head to, so its very important that we develop the whole person but there’s the financial aspect as well that we can benefit from and I do think we have the talent residing here, to help us get there.” 19
