Christmas Musical Magic Included in the evening’s performance will be the Brass and Woodwind Ensembles – directed by Arthur Sellwood and Dr Allison Flax Archer respectively. Tickets are $5 for Primary and Secondary school students. For further information call Daniel Singh at HLSCC at 852-7011.

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Should I take my Boyfriend to Christmas Party the background or maybe just watching you for your reaction when both your boyfriend and the boss are in the same area. On the other hand, depending on how long ago it was, maybe your co-workers have forgotten the situation by now and really couldn’t care less. In which case, the party could be event free. Staying away from the party does not solve the problem. The real problem is that you have to consider your conscience and the issue of trust in the relationship. That is much more important than what your co-workers think. Was this a one-time ‘closeness’ or is it a habit with you? If you are truly committed to your boyfriend, then make an effort to have him be the one to fulfill your needs, instead of turning to another man. You are human, so everyone makes mistakes, but learn from them. Ensure that you set proper boundaries with your boss going forward and also try to behave in a professional manner at work to redeem yourself. Even if you slipped once, that does not have to dictate who you are going forward.
Dear Koren, Our staff Christmas party is coming up and my boyfriend is looking forward to going with me. The only problem is there were rumours in the office that I was involved with the boss. We did have a short period of closeness but I regretted it and now it is purely business. I don’t want anyone to say anything to my boyfriend. Should I just make up an excuse to keep him away from the party or would that make me look guilty? – Wondering Dear Wondering, By now you must be aware of whether you were involved with the boss or not. You said there was a short period of closeness which you regret. I am not even sure what a short period of closeness entails, but if nothing wrong was done, why do you have regrets? Obviously, some rumours do have an element of truth to them. It is clear that you did not confess anything to your boyfriend, so if anyone says anything at the party, it could be devastating to him and to the relationship; especially if they give the wrong information. Even if they do not say anything, the body language displayed could be uncomfortable. Being looked at snidely, snickering in

Holidays, Food and Resolutions A friend sent me a funny Facebook posting recently that got me thinking. The photos showed two women both 51 years old. The one on the left was a health food advocate and vegetarian who believed in colonic cleansing and looked (kindly speaking) like a dried prune. On the right was British Food writer and cooking show host, Nigella Lawson, the creamy-skinned, buxom self-proclaimed “domestic goddess” who sells her culinary creations with flirtatious flair. Under her picture it said,“She eats, butter, meat and desserts.” Of course the irony was not lost on the viewer, albeit Nigella was most likely photo-enhanced. Although not a strict vegetarian, I do think there is a lot be said for less heavy meat consumption and more reliance on proteins coming from fish or chicken. Generally after shopping my vegetable drawer spills over into the bottom shelf of my refrigerator along with fruits. I was once accused of eating “rabbit food,” which I found quite funny, as I didn’t know rabbits also enjoyed wine and chocolate. My recent cooking forays have been in discovering Israeli dishes which to my delight are just my style of eating: five to six different small salads made with grains, greens, and olives with a garnish of skewered chicken on the side. In fact, I’m treating myself to an Israeli dishes cookbook for the holidays. It appears to me that this “what we eat or do not eat for the good of our health” debate has gone on for decades. Nutritionists will say after one study: eggs, milk, butter, red meat constitutes our healthy building blocks and in the next study these foods are killing us Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
with cholesterol. There are so many altered non-fat, low cholesterol, and artificially sweetened foods on the shelves of our grocery stores now our taste buds are getting genetically altered. There is always a new marketing buzz-word; pro-biotic, anti-oxidant, Vitamins C and D enhanced. What happened to the foods we just pull out of the ground, wash off and eat? Of course the other big question involves Nature verses Nurture. How much are we genetically pre-disposed to wonderful skin, lustrous hair, lean bodies no matter what we consume? Or is it all dependent on what we put in our mouths? I read years ago that Sophia Loren’s breakfast consists of an espresso coffee and biscotti. Not in my mind the healthiest way to start your day, but are we going to argue over her breath taking form? A recent startling case in Ohio was reported where an obese eight year old weighing 200 pounds was taken by the Government’s Family Services Agency and put in foster care for what was considered medical neglect. How much this weight was due to diet and how much to an unknown physical predisposition was not totally determined. With the holidays approaching many will tend to over indulge in holiday treats-especially those laden with carbohydrates and that sweet temptress, sugar! Solemn New Year’s resolutions will be made (this is annually the highest time for gym memberships) and broken. The wisdom I would pass on at this time of the year comes from my beloved father, who left this earth way too soon. Always fit, always trim, he believed in moderation in all food consumption, was not big on sweets and believed a bit of exercise every day was vital. His motto was: “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper.” You might want to try that for your New Year’s resolution. 6

Footloose Upon hearing the news that a remake of the ‘80s classic Footloose was in the works, I was among the crowd of skeptics. Why make a remake? The original is a great movie! No one can top Kevin Bacon or
(Julianne Hough) who dates an amateur racing car driver and wears tiny shorts while dancing at illegal parties whenever possible. It’s the standard story of boy meets girl – boy gets in trouble with girl’s boyfriend – boys duel in school bus demolition derby race. Ren makes it his mission to change the town’s archaic law – and win the girl – by holding a dance for his fellow high school students. Along the way, there are plenty of moments which Footloose fans new and old will enjoy. And yes, Ren still teaches Willard, his new friend with two left feet, dance moves to the tune of Let’s Hear It for the Boy.
his sky-high hair. But I am pleasantly surprised to admit that the 2011 remake of Footloose, starring Julianne Hough (Dancing with the Stars) and newcomer Kenny Wormald is good. It’s really, really good. It is critical to point out that this new edition is nearly a shot-for-shot remake of the original – same scenes, same dialogue, same songs. But the new movie actually adds more. There’s more depth to the characters – more emotion behind the ban on dancing that new-to-town Ren MacCormack (Wormald) just doesn’t understand. For anyone unfamiliar with the movie, Ren moves from Boston to the small town of Bomont, Georgia to live with his aunt and uncle following the death of his mother. It doesn’t take long for him to learn about the car crash three years ago in which several teens were killed driving home from a party. As a result, the town leaders, led by Reverend Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid), outlawed dancing. Rev. Moore’s son Bobby was the driver of the car. Naturally, Moore’s other child is rebellious Ariel 9

Couric Recalls ‘The Year’ It’s Been In ABC Special In making The Year what she terms “a fast-paced and fun show,” Couric also will revisit happier stories she covered while at CBS, such as the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. “It’s going to be jampacked with the stories that really captured our attention and our imaginations this year. News comes so fast and furious, it’ll be great to see how the year unfolded through stories that seem to vanish into the ether pretty quickly.” A “Hall of Shame” segment will be included as well, and as Couric puts it, “You can probably guess some of the people who will be in that.”
If anyone knows how much can happen over the course of 12 months, it’s Katie Couric. After beginning 2011 still serving as anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News, she’s ending it with one of her first major ventures since joining ABC News. It forms part of a deal that also will see her launch a syndicated weekday talk show for parent company Disney/ABC next fall. A co-production with People magazine, the special The Year ... With Katie Couric airs Thursday, Dec. 15. “It is quite helpful to get more of a bird’s-eye view on some of these issues,” Couric says of the retrospective’s inclusion of such stories as the Republican candidates’ presidential debates and the Penn State University sex abuse scandal. “By not covering every moment of every story, I think you can have a slightly different perspective.” Couric is grateful to have a two-hour slot to look back at 2011, but she claims, “This is going to be turbocharged, a year-ender on steroids. I don’t think we’re going to go into huge depth on any one story, because these are stories everyone is pretty familiar with. Of course, though, we want to bring them up to speed. If we’re talking about the Arab Spring, we’re going to talk about where we are now in terms of the revolutions that were so mind-boggling in the Middle East.” 17
