Christmas Festival Brewer’s Bay Friday & Saturday ALSO THIS WEEK: Enid Scatliffe Fun Day • Christmas Street Fair • Commodore’s Cup • Little Switzerland Appreciation Party
This Week’s Feature Story
Christmas Brewer’s Bay Style What better way to get into the Christmas mood than the Brewers Bay annual Christmas Festival, and its beautiful Torch Light Parade. The Todman’s, Brewer’s Bay and Soldier’s Hill Progressive Associations (TBS) are hosting their annual two-day fun and festive event starting on Friday. Kicking off around 7:30pm at Brewer’s Bay Park there will be caroling and live music from an array of talented performers, including the ever-popular fungi band, the Lashing Dogs. Local holiday fare will also be plentiful with mouth watering treats such as pork and ham specialities, black cake, guavaberry tarts and plenty of holiday rum, so best to turn up in good voice and hungry! Irene Parsons, President of TBS said, “Our aim is to bring communities together, so we have been organizing this event for around six years now. Each year there is something different and this year is no different. We will have Santa’s elves in the parade as well as our Prince and Princess and Golden Senior, it all makes for a very special night.” On Saturday, the main attraction of the festival, the Torch Light Parade starts around 6:30pm. The road will be lined with burning torches and about ten to twelve
troupes of talented performers will lead the parade in their bright holiday costumes to Brewer’s Bay Park. This year the troupes will include the BVI Dance Group and the Grasshoppers to name just a few. Those following Christmas in Brewer’s Bay 2010 the parade will pick up the lit torches from the roadside and follow the performers into the park creating a truly magical vibe. Once in the park, each troupe will make a short performance before Santa himself arrives to visit the children. There will be plenty of Christmas treats for everyone to enjoy, and all are welcome to take part in this fun yuletide festival – so be sure to join in and you are guaranteed to leave filled with plenty of Christmas spirit! – Jan Critchley

Shopping off the Rock This is the time of year when West End becomes a giant parking lot – especially at the weekend. More cars than ever are parked along the verges on either side of the road leading to the ferryboat dock. Now this is either because there are more cars in general or more people are going in droves to St. Thomas to shop as Christmas approaches. The BVI has become a fairly affluent society over the years. Despite the global economic downturn, people are still spending money at Christmas. So why are they spending it in St. Thomas? I’m not advocating that we import stores like Cost U Less and K-Mart, but that’s where I seem to bump into most fellow BVIslanders when I go to the USVI. They all seem to have loaded shopping carts, which are emptied into rental cars and then offloaded onto fer-

ryboats for the trip back here. And most of that money stays in St. Thomas, or worse, goes to the US mainland. So shouldn’t we be lining our own pockets at Christmas time, or at least keeping the money in our own community? It’s not for the lack of shops – though it’s often said this is not a shopping community – at least for the cruise ship tourists. There are, however, a myriad of little shops offering just about anything you can think of – well, perhaps that’s stretching it a bit – but most things anyway. So why don’t we shop here? I guess part of it is a need we have to get off the rock – even if it’s just to go to another rock for a day or two. What draws everyone to Cost U Less and K-Mart? Price, pure and simple. It’s cheap and they can do it because of turnover. Here on Tortola, there are less people so there’s less turnover. But you’ve got to start somewhere and some shops have begun to set an example by cutting prices and turning over the inventory quicker. But it’s an uphill battle with import duty to contend with. So let’s do ourselves a favor, resist the lure of St. Thomas, explore the local shops, encourage more people to shop here – and for getting off the rock, try Virgin Gorda, and just relax.

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!
Should I try to get him back Dear Koren, I dated a man about three years ago and it only lasted about 4 months because he was kinda rough around the edges and did not always dress right or fit in with my crowd. Now I saw him the other day and I cannot believe how nice he looked. He was dressed a lot nicer and seemed more polished and was with a glamorous looking girl. I am sorry I let him get away. Since he is not married, should I try to get him back? – Regretful being. Even while dating or married, looks could change, but the personality is more consistent. When you are facing hard times and challenges, the kind of person you are and he is, is what would make the difference between whether you as a couple can overcome life’s hurdles or crumble under the pressure. The label on his jacket would hardly make a difference then. I am not saying that you should not look for a man who is attractive, poised or well dressed; I am saying, that alone is not enough. So leave him alone and let the woman who had the patience to work on him enjoy the rewards and the fruits of her labour. I’m sure that with you being smooth around the edges, knowing how to dress right and having the ability to fit in with the crowd means you should be able to snag any other man. Good luck.
Dear Regretful, Nope….nada…no! Don’t try to get him back when there is not enough evidence to show that he has changed who he is. You had your chance and you blew it. I think it is pretty superficial that you could judge a man’s eligibility to be your partner solely based on how he dresses and how well he fits in with your friends. While a man’s ability to be sociable is important, your friends should be more welcoming and open-minded and more accepting of people who are different. You mentioned nothing about his personality. Is he easy to talk to; is he sensitive, generous, kind or loyal? Is he honest? What about his long term goals and his plans for the future? Do you even care at all about these things? It would be sorta strange to have a relationship with a man without knowing who he is at the core of his

The Muppets In a case of life imitating art, the plot of the new movie, The Muppets, somewhat resembles the recent return of the furry creatures to the pop culture sphere. This movie, a long-time pet project of writer and star Jason Segel, is the newest installment in the franchise Jim Henson began in the mid-1950s. The Muppets introduces us to brothers Gary (Segel) and Walter (a muppet) who live in fictional Smalltown, USA. Brothers and best friends, the two share a love of The Muppet Show, the television variety show they watched growing up, which is now off the air. When Gary decides to take his girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) on a trip to Los Angeles, Walter goes along, eager to tour the Muppet Theater where all the shows were filmed. However they find that the theater is not only in disrepair, but also up for sale, with oil magnate Tex Richman as the top bidder. Only one thing can save Muppet Theater – $10 million dollars. The brothers hatch a plan to reunite The Muppets, and produce a star-studded telethon, so they go straight to the top – Kermit the Frog. Together, the gang rounds up The Muppets one by one, and we get to see what they’ve been up to in the years of dwindling fame. In reality, it has been 12 years since a Muppets Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide
movie was released in theaters, and the characters are a bit like aging stars in the pop culture mindset, as they are thought of fondly but don’t seem to fit in today’s setting. In actuality, this movie may help people to see that many of our family comedies today (such as Shrek) owe everything to the original Muppet Show, the original crowdpleaser for young and old alike. Muppet fans will enjoy a few classic tunes including “The Muppet Show Theme,” “Rainbow Connection” and “Mah Na Mah Na,” along with quite a few new, original songs.

Christmas RC Clash On Sunday Described as fun, exciting and exhilarating, about 30 enthusiasts from St. Thomas, St. John and the BVI will converge at Brandywine Bay on Sunday afternoon for the Christmas Remote Control Power Boat Racing bash, starting at 1 p.m. “We are expecting about 30-40 boats because most people come with two or three boats,” explained 20year racer and event organizer David Thomas. “We’ll have four different classes with mono-hulls, cats, twins and if the weather is good we’ll run hydros, which is the fastest thing on the water as far as remote control boats go.” Thomas said there are between 16-20 boats in the mono hull class which allows him to run two different classes of races. “The first time you see one of these races, you can’t believe that something so small can go so fast,” he pointed out. “Just the simple fact that these are organized races, it’s actually better than seeing the real powerboats because there’s no argument if we will race this or that person. If you know you are in a heat, the race is going to come up. The flips and the dunking that happens with the sport, makes it really exciting.” Thomas stated that this year everybody has been looking towards having a racing series. He said between last December and now, they have had about six races between the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. The former BVI Cycling Federation head said they are now looking at establishing a points series like he used in cycling, with races in both territories. At the end of the year, a points champion can be crowned and they can also have an overall Virgin Islands champion. “We have had a lot more people becoming interest-

ed, buying boats then coming over and racing,” he notes. “We attended a race in St. John over the Thanks Giving weekend and the response was really good so everybody is looking to come over here. We are hoping to have more boats, more people and an even a greater time.” Registration will take place on Sunday before the racing begins. The cost is $20 if someone is running one boat or $10 per boat if competing in all the classes. Trophies are awarded to the top finishers—which is determined by points. Each race, Thomas said, the winner gets 400 points with a descending order based on finish. Someone starting and not finishing will get 25 points. There will be six races in six heats in each class. “You can have between 30-60 races taking place between one and five p.m.,” Thomas pointed out. “It stays exciting and one will always see a fun race happening. There’s always excitement, along with the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. It’s going to be a lot of fun. If you’ve never been to one of these events, come along and check it out.” 23
