Doctor Who Christmas Special A Communal Treat For Fans Christmas episode,” says Smith, who at 29 is the youngest actor yet to take on the role. “The Doctor and Christmas go hand in hand. In many ways, he treats every day like it is Christmas, so when it really is ‘that day,’ he’s like, ‘Whoa! Here we go!’ Also, it was just great fun to have snow in September.” There’s plenty of traditional holiday sentiment in the story, which opens on Christmas Eve 1938, as Madge Arwell (guest star Claire Skinner) rescues an injured “Spaceman Angel” who promises to repay her kindness anytime she decides to make a wish. Three years later, a distraught Madge and her two children, Lily and Cyril (Holly Earl, Maurice Cole), flee war-torn London for a ramshackle house on the coast, where her efforts to give the kids their best Christmas ever get a boost from a madcap caretaker (guess who?) whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. “We’ve got new characters in this one: Lily and Cyril, the children, who are just brilliant, and Madge Arwell, the mom, and all these other wonderful characters ...,” Smith says. “That’s one of the great things about this job: We keep getting all these wonderful guest actors: the Michael Gambons and David Walliamses and James Cordens. It’s like a wonderful master class for me.”

Author Clement C. Moore was referring to St. Nicholas when he wrote of “a right jolly old elf” in his famous poem. But he just as easily could have been referencing a certain peripatetic, centuries-old Time Lord who zips freely through time and space yet holds a special place in his heart(s) for earth humans, especially children. That probably explains, at least in part, why Doctor Who and Christmas have become synonymous in the show’s U.K. home base. And now, for the second consecutive year, BBC America carries this year’s Christmas episode — set in World War II England — on Sunday, Dec. 25. Series star Matt Smith, who currently plays the 11th incarnation of the Doctor, couldn’t be happier about it. “I think there is a sort of magic and scale to the

Ask Koren Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

Gratitude… Why it Changes Your Life Ask Koren None of us who are reading this article have a perfect life. We might not have our dream job or our dream family or our dream home. What we do have though are dreams and that is something to be thankful for. What are the benefits that you received in 2011? Did you show appreciation to those around you who helped to make a difference? Your mother, father, husband, wife, children, employer, employees, neigbour, etc? Appreciation can be shown tangibly with a gift or it can be done verbally or even by action. It’s easy to say thank you when someone gives us a gift or does something nice for us. However, sometimes we can show gratitude just for the simple fact that the person is there. Don’t take anyone for granted. There are many ways in which gratitude can change your life: 1. It boosts optimism. A spirit of thankfulness encourages you to look at the good things in your life and appreciate them. You learn to count your blessing and appreciate what you do have instead of focusing on what you don’t. 2. Good health. Studies done at the University of California have shown that people who recorded daily things they were grateful for had stronger immune systems. When you are grateful for your health, you will most likely work harder to maintain it. 3. Foster better relationships. Showing gratitude helps us to build stronger relationships. People feel

Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

appreciated and they are motivated to give more of themselves as they see the fruits of their kindness or generosity bring someone else joy. 4. Less stress. Instead of constantly complaining which is a sure way to be stressed out, we instead motivate ourselves by seeing the good in life and positively pursuing it. 5. It is catching. If you sit in a group and everyone is complaining and moaning, then conduct an experiment. Acknowledge that while that is happening, at least you have life and a place to life and a job and whatever else and watch the change in the direction of the conversation. Sit back and listen and you will gradually see the others start outlining their blessings too. Be an agent for change. Make an effort to find at least one thing a day that you are thankful for and be sure to either acknowledge the source, express it to someone else or write it down. Allow the spirit of gratitude to change your life for the better. Send your questions to askkoren@live.com and a response will be provided

Holidays of Light and Peace This is a season of thinking about other people. It’s a season marked by giving (and hopefully that doesn’t mean just gifts), joy, sharing traditional foods, and bringing a little light into otherwise dark places. It’s a season we think of rededicating our lives for good works and positive actions as the New Year approaches. It is also a time on the calendar when two major religions, Judaism and Christianity share a similar goal: Peace on Earth and Goodwill towards Mankind. Although both Christmas and Hanukkah fall in December (Kislev is the ninth month in the Jewish biblical calendar) they don’t always coincide in the same week. However, this year, the eight-day Hanukkah celebration begins on sundown the 20th and continues over Christmas on the 25th until the 28th. The Jewish holiday comes from the time of the Maccabees in 165 B.C.E., when the Greek ruler Antiochus decided that Greek religious practices during this Hellenistic Age should predominate over any other belief system. He outlawed any observance of the Hebrew culture and put to death anyone who studied Torah or kept the Sabbath. The final act of desecration came when he ordered a pig slaughtered in the temple and a statue of Zeus erected there. A zealous Jew by the name of Mattathias, rose up with his sons and resisted. They waged a three- year war and eventually seized the temple back and rededicated it. The “eight day miracle” comes from rabbinic lore that there was only enough consecrated oil to light the seven branched menorah for one day, but it lasted eight days. For Christians, this is a holiday that also celebrates light and hope. It marks the traditional observance of the birth of Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, who was to Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

bring peace and reconciliation between man and God. Biblical prophecies about “the light of the world” translate into Christian observances with candles and festive pine trees full of lights. Houses are decorated with lights inside and out, just as in Jewish homes the Hanukiah (nine-branched candle) is lit with a new candle sequentially each night until eight lights along with the center lighting candle burn brightly in homes. In the Christian holiday, gifts are exchanged and this is also a time to remember those who are in need. For Hanukkah small gifts are given to the children each of the eight nights as the candles are lit and traditional foods include potato pancakes (called Latkes) and jelly-filled doughnuts. The celebratory meal on Christmas day varies within cultures, but usually includes a turkey or ham, many potato and greens side dishes and traditional pies and tarts. Both holidays commemorate the desire to have peace among men and a call to “treat others as you would have them treat you.” Both represent a hope to bring light to the world. May the festive lights of this season bring a renewed sense of hope to all. 8

The Untouchables Every so often I miss a blockbuster movie that everyone else I know seems to have seen – or if they own the DVD – has watched a dozen times. And in this age of instant streaming, you don’t need to own the DVD any more, it’s out there any time you fancy watching. But not everything is out there yet, even for those of us who pay the monthly fees, and so browsing has become a regular early evening pastime, until the right movie clicks into place. That’s how come I picked on The Untouchables, realizing that somehow I hadn’t seen it before. As soon as the music started my wife complained that she doesn’t like scary movies, but how scary can Al Capone be in this day and age? Pretty scary as it turned out, but we both enjoyed the movie. Filmed in prohibition Chicago in 1987, the movie tells of Treasury Agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Kostner) who tries and fails to nail Capone (Robert de Niro) by conventional methods. When a small girl is killed by a mob bomb, Ness decides to fight fire with fire – gunfire! Aware of the rampant corruption within the police force, he forms his own team using a savvy Irish beat cop Jim Malone (Sean Connery) and a raw rookie named George Stone (Andy Garcia) who is a crack shot with a pistol. Armed with shotguns they take the fight to Limin’ Times Entertainment Guide

Capone busting into his illegal liquor warehouse and making numerous arrests. While Capone previously regarded Ness and his squad as a nuisance, now they are a menace and the mob brings all its fury to bear on the small group with tragic consequences. Connery earned an Oscar for his role as Jim Malone and while the movie wasn’t historically accurate, it gave a good idea of the terror tactics used by the mob and the depth of corruption in high places. In an ironic closing scene, a reporter quizzes Ness on what he would do if prohibition were repealed; to which he replies: “Well, I guess I’ll have a drink!”

Christmas/New Year’s Double Issue

Claudia Colli

Counting the BVI’s Birds Christmas Bird Count was held in 1900 as an alternative to the traditional Christmas “Side Hunt,” where hunters would compete to see who could kill the most birds and other animals. As part of a burgeoning conservation movement, the Christmas Bird Census offered an alternative tradition where birds were counted and not shot. The movement eventually spread along major bird migratory routes from North to South America and the Caribbean. Today the Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen science survey in the world. Among the Audubon Society’s success stories is the ongoing recovery of the imperiled California condor and the brown pelican, a species common in the BVI. The organization is also instrumental in the protection of fragile habitats including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the continuing restoration of the Florida Everglades. Here in the BVI, volunteers will count anywhere from several dozen to hundreds of a particular species. Pelicans, egrets, kingbirds and doves are among the most commonly counted birds here, but sometimes a much rarer one will be spotted, like the Puerto Rican Screech Owl or the Great Black-backed Gull, an Arctic bird that had never been seen here before. Once counted the statistics are sent into the Audubon Society which compiles the data and adds it to counts from dozens of other Caribbean and North and South American countries to give a picture of the health of our hemisphere’s bird species. For more info on the Bird Count and how you can help, please contact the National Parks Trust at 4943904. If you would like information on a bird that you have spotted, you can call Clive Petrovich at 496-7516.

Every December a dedicated group of volunteers trek around Tortola to count birds. They do this in spite of blazing heat, rough roads, prickly bush and sometimes torrential rain. The pursuit, though, is not Brown Pelican as lonely as it might seem. As part of the National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count, these BVI residents are among thousands of enthusiasts tallying bird populations throughout the Caribbean and North and South America. Worldwide, the Christmas Bird Count is held anywhere between December 14th and January 5th. In the BVI, it is generally held one to two days after Christmas and this year will be on December 27th on Tortola and on December 30th on Anegada. Organized by Nancy Woodfield Pascoe and Esther Georges of the National Parks Trust and with the help of environmental consultant, Clive Petrovic, the count gives a snapshot of our bird population at a point in time.
